    The meals were excellent!

    The meals were perfectly balanced, allowing us to enjoy the natural flavors of the ingredients, and the attentive service was excellent. We look forward to visiting again during the wild vegetable season.

    Dinner is excellent.

    I recently stayed at "Ryuba," which I had been curious about. The staff who welcomed us were very pleasant, making the stay enjoyable. However, walking around in socks was not ideal, and I felt uncomfortable putting on shoes with the same socks when leaving, so I changed them right before departure. The room was clean and comfortable, but it would be more convenient if nightwear, yukata, and socks were provided in the room. Also, there weren’t enough towels for multiple uses of the private Onsen in the room. For an accommodation of this level, higher-quality towels and a towel rack would be appreciated. The Onsen was exceptional with its dedicated caretaker adjusting it to the perfect temperature—purely sourced without any added water—a truly luxurious experience! Dinner rivaled top-tier restaurants in Tokyo; every dish reflected the chef's meticulous attention to detail. The flavors created through collaboration with producers were extraordinary—an unforgettable culinary delight! Thank you for such a wonderful meal. Breakfast fell short of expectations—it was simple and lacked variety compared to dinner’s excellence. This accommodation (featuring private Onsen baths) is highly rated on national magazines and IKYU.com; visiting here is something to look forward to. The Onsen experience here was outstanding!

    Unforgettable Accommodation

    We stayed at this accommodation for a family trip with elderly members. It had a great reputation on IKYU.com, and it truly lived up to our expectations. We had a wonderful time. The meals were exceptional, reflecting the passion of the chef and staff. Additionally, the engaging talks for guests added an extra special touch to our stay. Dining at the counter was a first for us (we usually avoid it as we are four including my son, making conversation difficult), but this time with three of us, it was an excellent experience. The seating arrangement in the corner for three people was thoughtful, and I appreciated how they adjusted the cutlery placement midway through to accommodate my left-handedness—such incredible hospitality. The dishes showcased local love and warmth with their use of wood-based elements throughout. As others have mentioned in reviews, the rice was outstanding! Breakfast was simple yet flavorful—a reminder of how wonderful Japanese cuisine can be. The bath facilities were very comfortable with pH 7.3 water; we enjoyed both the large public bath and our room's private bath. While amenities were minimalistic, they showed great attention to detail. One minor point: since the TV is on a tablet device, my husband—used to watching on larger screens—found it slightly inconvenient; however, I enjoyed having time away from television altogether. The welcome drink served from a large sake bottle was surprising but unique and delicious! The lounge offered an extensive selection of drinks along with various seating options like tatami mats or couches that allowed us to relax in our own style. Unfortunately, we couldn’t join the morning tour as it was fully booked; however, after checking out we enjoyed autumn leaves at Eboshi Park nearby. We’re already talking about visiting again during cherry blossom season! This accommodation has left lasting memories for us—thank you so much!

    Excellent Hot Spring Quality

    It was my first time visiting Akayu, and I really enjoyed the hot spring quality. The slightly hotter temperature was also a plus. The facility was clean, and the bed was very comfortable, allowing me to sleep soundly for about 8 hours. The meals were delicate and delicious, with the Funagata mushrooms being my favorite. However, as it seems that dishes are served all at once, the serving pace was quite slow. Additionally, in private rooms, there is no way to call staff members, so I had to wait for the next course before ordering more drinks, which was disappointing.

    We had a great time.

    When we received a call to check the reservation, we were asked about our preferred dining location and chose the counter based on their recommendation. Watching the soba-making process was an interesting experience worth trying at least once. However, for those who want to enjoy a relaxed time with companions, private rooms are recommended. During our stay, the staff's hospitality made us feel very comfortable and well taken care of. We appreciate their efforts to ensure guests have an enjoyable experience. As someone who often stays in serene accommodations, this fresh and unique atmosphere was a pleasant change. The hot spring quality in both the large public bath and the semi-open-air bath in our room was excellent—very warming and relaxing. While I wished the public bath could be slightly larger, it seemed that the women's public bath had better facilities, which I couldn't access—a bit disappointing. The breakfast and dinner featured local ingredients but felt insufficient in quantity and variety for me. The soba noodles prepared under the president's supervision were entertaining as an experience but tasted quite ordinary with average preparation skills. The room was beautifully renovated but had some usability issues; improvements could be made to items like towel warmers or clothing racks for better convenience. Since I rarely watch TV during my stay at accommodations, such a small portable TV seems unnecessary—perhaps replacing it with a wall-mounted flat-screen TV would be better? Entering the accommodation grounds felt like stepping into another world—a wonderful impression—but unfortunately, the parking lot resembled a monthly rental parking area which detracted from this feeling. With some creative landscaping around it, you could enhance its integration into your overall concept of space. I look forward to visiting again someday and hope to see these changes implemented!

    A wonderful accommodation.

    I embarked on a solo 5-night, 6-day trip to Tohoku as a late summer vacation since my husband and I couldn't align our schedules. For my stay in Yamagata, I chose this accommodation as an annual indulgence. I felt the passion of the owner who loves Yamagata, the staff managing the morning tour and Onsen (who holds various roles), and all other staff members. Although I seemed to be the only solo guest, I was determined to fully enjoy myself. The meals were exceptional from the very first bite, prompting me to immediately email my husband about how wonderful this accommodation is and invite him for a future visit together. Thank you for the birthday plate! As someone sensitive to heat, they adjusted the Onsen temperature to 40°C for me, allowing me to soak comfortably in 100% natural hot spring water for an extended time. Although we couldn’t see a sea of clouds during the morning tour, it was refreshing nonetheless (apologies for taking two cups each of coffee and apple juice). My history-loving husband would have thoroughly enjoyed participating in this experience too. This has become quite a long review, but everything about this accommodation exceeded expectations. While it’s quite far away so frequent visits may not be possible, I hope to return again someday!

    I understand why my friend recommended it.

    From check-in, free drinks are available in the lobby. In the evening, there is a soba-making demonstration and Japanese sake service. The open kitchen dinner is interactive, allowing guests to participate and enjoy perfectly cooked rice. While local sourcing is common everywhere nowadays, this accommodation stands out with its respect for producers, excellent creativity with ingredients, entertainment value, and exceptional hospitality from the staff—truly top-notch. The early morning sea of clouds tour and city exploration were also enjoyable. The Akayu Onsen left my skin smooth and warm; it was truly worth visiting and has become one of the accommodations I would love to stay at again.

    A wonderful accommod...

    A wonderful accommodation filled with love for Yamagata, perfectly embodying the concept of becoming a showroom for Yamagata. The Onsen, carefully maintained by the caretaker, was exceptional. My parents were especially delighted with the indoor bath, saying they could stay in it forever. If you have time, we highly recommend joining the evening soba-making and sake-tasting experiences. The meals were not only delicious but also full of surprises—constantly exceeding expectations. Since my parents are from Yamagata, many ingredients felt familiar to them but were presented in unexpected ways. We received both relaxation and delightful stimulation during our stay.

    This accommodation is ideal for those who enjoy a theatrical style of hospitality. However, it may feel a bit overwhelming for guests who value tranquility and simplicity. We visited with high expectations, having heard it is the most highly rated accommodation in Tohoku. While the location along a national highway felt somewhat ordinary at first, stepping inside completely changed our impression. The atmosphere was well-crafted, with tasteful use of lighting and materials. The relocated traditional house structure added charm, the texture of the hallways was pleasant, and the room's open-air bath was comfortable. The exterior and facilities were meticulously maintained, creating an overall serene ambiance. On the other hand, we felt that their approach to hospitality leaned towards being overly assertive. Although staff members were earnest in their efforts, there seemed to be an overemphasis on having guests experience "their world," which made it difficult for us to relax or enjoy at our own pace. Operations were designed efficiently with standardized meal times and pathways; however, this left little room for flexibility or personalization during our stay. While their enthusiasm for creativity and presentation was evident, there seemed to be a lack of professional poise in staff demeanor outside staged moments—resulting in an inconsistent atmosphere. Meals featured a fusion of Italian and Japanese cuisine using local ingredients; however overall cohesion was lacking with weaker emphasis on Japanese elements. More focus appeared placed on "presentation" rather than taste itself—leaving room for improvement regarding culinary refinement. For instance: serving Yonezawa beef as an "additional service" later gave off impressions aimed toward creating feelings like gaining extra value but instead detracted from authenticity. Meal explanations via microphone further reinforced performance-driven priorities which might appeal brighter settings enthusiasts yet less so quieter diners seeking peaceful enjoyment. Rather resembling traditional ryokan experiences—it operated closer resembling hotel-style efficiency prioritizing cost-saving measures by minimizing downtime spaces between activities/events resulting friendly albeit performative warmth interactions without deeper resonance throughout stays themselves ultimately missing opportunities centering guest-focused observation professionalism potentially elevating allure future visitors alike!

    Summer Vacation Trip

    Stayed at the accommodation at the end of August. The cuisine by Takinami-san was exceptional, featuring dishes I had never tried before. For my child's birthday, they provided a special drink and a plate with a message, making it a wonderful stay. I would love to visit this accommodation again if given the chance.

    First Time at Akayu Onsen

    I had been interested for a long time and finally completed the reservation. I was satisfied with everything, including the meals, onsen, and service. When confirming the reservation, I requested a private room for dinner but changed to the counter upon recommendation from the staff on the day. The performance and pairing were excellent. I will visit again during cherry blossom season next time. Thank you for your hospitality.

    Second Stay

    I stayed at the Ryokan to relax during my long-awaited break. My previous stay was wonderful, and this time also did not disappoint. The meals and drinks were delicious, but since I usually don't eat much, it was a bit disappointing that I couldn't fully enjoy everything because I was too full. We are already talking about wanting to have a Multiple Night Stay next time.

    Simply outstanding.

    On the last day of our trip to Tohoku, we found and made a reservation just a few days prior after much deliberation. Although it seemed like an accommodation for adults, we were unsure if it was suitable to bring our elementary school-aged child. However, the exceptional hospitality made even our child behave like a true gentleman/lady, making it the perfect conclusion to our trip. The pairing of delicious sake was outstanding for us parents, the onsen was amazing, and our child loved it so much that they called it "the soba hotel" and expressed their desire to return. The soba was so delicious that they wished there had been more! It seems children truly recognize great food when they taste it. The locally sourced vegetables and meat were served in their best condition with heartfelt care from the staff who were absolutely charming. We could feel their love for the accommodation itself, their local area, food, and of course for us as guests. If such an accommodation existed nearby, we would make it our regular spot without hesitation; however, since it's far away from us now, we look forward to visiting again in the future. When my child grows older, I hope to visit another property by this establishment as well. The dried sweet potatoes we purchased were surprisingly delicious! Thank you very much!

    This Accommodation feels like it puts the ideas from the book *Competitive Strategy as Story* into practice. Looking into its history and background reveals several fascinating stories. Perhaps because the rates are slightly on the higher side, most guests have traditionally been middle-aged or older, but I would also encourage ambitious young business professionals to stay here at least once. It was an Accommodation with a lot to learn from—highly recommended!

    This was my first visit, and I was very satisfied. The staff created a very approachable atmosphere, and the onsen provided great relaxation.     We stayed as a family after reading the reviews. From the warm welcome to the farewell, the hospitality was truly delightful. The meals were, of course, all delicious, and we enjoyed conversations with the staff and sommelier without interrupting our family time. Above all, the natural hot spring bath was incredibly relaxing and wonderful. It felt gentle on the skin, like being wrapped in a veil. Our entire family agreed that this has become an accommodation we would love to stay at again (next time for a multiple night stay)!

    Enjoyed delicious cuisine and had a relaxing time.

    It was the last accommodation of our trip, and we were a bit tired, but our spirits were lifted during dinner. Above all, the staff seemed so lively, which made me wonder if it was influenced by the owner. A small detail, but the chopsticks had very fine tips (not sure if it’s related), which made the meal even more enjoyable.     60th Birthday Celebration Trip

    I stayed at Takinami for the first time to celebrate a friend's 60th birthday. It was also my first trip to Yamagata, and choosing Takinami greatly elevated my impression of the area. This truly exceptional accommodation is a must-repeat! Next time, I hope to visit with my husband. However, since it's such a popular accommodation, I wonder if I'll be able to secure a reservation... The early morning tour led by the owner of Takinami was initially fully booked, but thanks to a cancellation, I was able to join. This tour is an absolute must! To all the staff members—thank you so much for everything. The celebration for my friend's 60th birthday turned into a trip filled with smiles from everyone. We are truly grateful for your hospitality. Thank you very much!

    Inspired by Local Pride

    I finally had the chance to stay at "Takinami," a place I had always wanted to visit. Passing through the impressive thatched gate, I was greeted by a stately traditional house. Inside, there was a modern lounge furnished with stylish furniture. For the welcome drink, I enjoyed sake—a rare and exquisite local brew not widely available outside the prefecture. Its aroma and taste were exceptional. Dinner was an immersive experience, with dishes prepared right in front of us at the counter seats. The unique creations were unlike anything I've ever tasted before. From horse meat to carp—ingredients I'm usually not fond of or rarely eat—were transformed into delicious dishes by the hands of a Michelin-starred chef, perfectly paired with sake. Even my 89-year-old mother kept exclaiming how delicious everything was! The onsen allowed for drinking its waters and could be enjoyed multiple times without causing fatigue—I soaked in it many times during my stay. The next morning, the owner himself became our driver and took us to a nearby mountain summit. His love for his hometown shone through as he passionately shared stories during the drive and took plenty of photos for everyone at the top. It wasn't just him—the sommelier who demonstrated soba-making, the chef, and all staff members showed immense love for their local area and accommodation while striving wholeheartedly to delight their guests. Their passion deeply moved me. As souvenirs, we received two cups' worth of delicious rice per person! Considering how expensive rice is these days, this generosity from the owner is remarkable. I will definitely visit again—thank you so much!

    The moment you step ...

    The moment you step into the bath, you can feel the quality of the spring water, which is truly impressive. However, the public bath is not very spacious and lacks a sense of openness. The Room features full glass windows, making it bright and comfortable. In the garden's open-air bath, natural hot spring water constantly flows in abundance, creating a luxurious experience as it overflows when you enter. I enjoyed spending a relaxing time while taking in the garden scenery, listening to birdsong, and admiring the greenery of the trees. However, the small TV in the Room may be inconvenient for older guests. The staff were friendly and attentive with thoughtful hospitality that was much appreciated. Meals incorporated elements of entertainment and were exceptional in both ingredients and taste—clearly at an extraordinary level. It was my first time seeing a Ryokan where even the president actively takes part so prominently; their dedication to concept and attention to detail was evident throughout.

    The hot springs and cuisine were excellent, but the hospitality was truly outstanding.

    Passionate about its hot springs and offering exquisite dishes made with plenty of local ingredients, this accommodation is already satisfying on its own. However, what truly sets it apart is the unparalleled hospitality that makes you want to return again and again. Having stayed at accommodations praised across the whole country, this was the first time I experienced such a deep love for the local area combined with exceptional hospitality. (The details are left as a surprise for when you visit!) Perfect as a treat for yourself or your family! Highly recommended!

    The Onsen is wonderful.

    We visited during the cherry blossom season, when they were in full bloom. The bath and the quality of the hot spring water were excellent. The meals were also very delicious, and we enjoyed them. Breakfast portions were a bit small, and it would have been better with a few more side dishes. The early-morning bus tour also had beautiful scenery and was very moving. The Room felt too casual for our taste and didn’t suit us. We also noticed some stains on the walls. In particular, I think the washroom could have been cleaned more thoroughly. Next time we stay, we would like to return and try a different Room. Thank you very much.

    Facility, staff, meals, and bath are all excellent.

    The facility, staff, meals (both dinner and breakfast), the onsen-fed private room bath, the reservable large bath, free firefly viewing tours, and early morning sightseeing tours were all excellent. The only concern was that while the efficient use of the onsen source is technically commendable, it resulted in the room bath being too hot, requiring effort to adjust the temperature with water.

    We stayed at this accommodation for a mother-daughter trip. Everything about this place was truly wonderful. The personalized service based on the check-in details was a delightful touch of hospitality. It was also nice to have the option to choose alcohol as a welcome drink. The room was simple yet clean and had a sense of freshness, and the open-air bath on the balcony, with its perfectly managed temperature by the bath attendant, provided an incredibly relaxing onsen experience anytime we used it. The meals were absolutely delicious from start to finish, and the sake served alongside dinner paired perfectly with each dish. We also appreciated being able to enjoy plenty of seasonal local ingredients in our meals. All staff members consistently provided pleasant service without being overly intrusive, maintaining just the right balance of attentiveness and distance, which we greatly appreciated. My mother even mentioned that such an excellent place would be perfect for a two-night stay to relax even more, so we definitely plan to visit again in the future. Seeing many repeat visitors in reviews is completely understandable after experiencing it ourselves. Thank you for providing us with such memorable moments that make us want to return again and again throughout different seasons!

    An overwhelming "Showcase of Yamagata" where even the sound of rain feels comforting.

    Despite the rainy season, this accommodation made even the rain feel beautiful and charming. The room was arranged to overlook a courtyard, and from the open-air bath with 100% fresh hot spring water, you could feel the quiet and peaceful flow of time. True to its name as a "Showcase of Yamagata," we enjoyed many delicious specialties representing Yamagata, but the highlight was undoubtedly the rice. Cooking it in an earthen pot added anticipation before eating, and its exquisite taste left us in awe. We were also treated to plenty of sake, which paired wonderfully with our meal. The staff were considerate towards my companion as well, offering herbal tea—thank you so much! (I regret forgetting to take home some herbal tea while waiting for it—what a shame! Haha.) From start to finish, we had a relaxing and wonderful time. Thank you very much!

    Even if you can't drink alcohol,

    I have stayed here several times with my mother. As always, the quality of the hot spring water and the delicious meals were excellent, but what made me especially happy this time was being able to order non-alcoholic pairings. Every pairing was delightful. The homemade non-alcoholic sangria, in particular, was so delicious that I hope it becomes a regular menu item! I look forward to staying here again. Thank you very much!
