    We had a relaxing stay.

Thank you for taking care of us during our Multiple Night Stay. I was once again impressed to see the owner leading the way and working hard from early in the morning. The soba was truly delicious, and I was disappointed that I couldn’t have it for dinner on the second night. To the person who kindly accommodated my request as someone who likes sweet alcoholic drinks, I was really looking forward to enjoying them on the second night. The freshly cooked rice was wonderful! The soy sauce with an egg-like flavor is becoming a staple in our home. This is an Accommodation we’re excited to visit again. Thank you very much.

    Event

The Room was spacious and clean. It was also nice to hear that care has been taken with the open-air bath in the guest room, including the bathing area. The meals seemed thoughtfully prepared, but I felt the strong focus on local ingredients limited the variety of dishes. The owner seems to enjoy events and I understand the intention to create a lively atmosphere, but I wonder whether a passionate solo performance of a birthday song by the owner is appropriate. Some guests may prefer to enjoy a delicious meal in a quiet setting.

    Attentive and well-maintained.

The cuisine—both ingredients and preparation—is worthy of Michelin standards, and I believe it stands out even among Michelin-level offerings. The staff’s attentive care was exceptional in every detail, making this Accommodation one of the most satisfying stays.

    Moved every time.

This is my fourth stay, and each time has been better than the last. In addition to the exceptional hospitality each staff member shows to every guest, you can also feel their dedication to continually improving the Accommodation, and I discover something new with every visit. I’m always grateful for the irreplaceable time I get to spend here—something I can only experience at Takinami. Next time will be in autumn. Thank you in advance.

    Wonderful hospitality

Both the Onsen and the meals were wonderful. The staff’s thoughtful hospitality was also very soothing. However, when I tried to use the open-air bath in the Room, I noticed that some of the wooden flooring in part of the washing area had softened, which made me a little worried it might give way.

    It’s difficult to evaluate.

The food was delicious, but having to start all at once after everyone is seated—while listening to explanations that felt like being on a bus tour—made it uncomfortable, especially since I had to eat in post-bath loungewear next to someone in a stylish dress. At check-in, they seemed to want me to decide on alcohol then as well, but I didn’t realize dinner would be a simultaneous start and I hadn’t seen the menu yet, so I asked to decide later. In the end, I couldn’t order a full bottle and could only choose from what was shown at check-in. I was told the owner makes soba and that guests are welcome to watch. I planned to take a quick look, but it didn’t feel like an atmosphere where you could leave midway; I wish they had told me the expected duration beforehand. In the Room bath, the washing area was only outside and it was cold, so I went to the public bath instead, but the changing area is quite small. There were many pigeons in the open-air bath area and they occasionally acted threateningly. (They were also on top of the roof over the private open-air bath in my Room—probably nesting there—and sometimes you could hear them calling and walking.) The building is wonderful and the Room is clean, but there’s only a pole hanger for clothes; there’s only a small table for late-night snacks; and there’s no place by the bed to put things. I heard about how it has been featured in many magazines and about Michelin as well—it really is a lovely Accommodation, and I’m sure more celebrities and magazine crews will continue to visit. All of the staff worked efficiently and were kind. Still, I somehow felt pressure that guests have to adapt themselves to how this Accommodation operates. If you ask whether I truly relaxed… I may have ended up feeling a bit tired. Our travel style is more about quietly taking it easy at our own pace while staying at an Accommodation, so this might not have been a good fit for us. That said, their love for Yamagata came through—I’d like to travel there again—and the soba was delicious.

An Accommodation You’ll Love in Yamagata

It was the best stay in Yamagata. Some of the guest Rooms are renovated from a traditional storehouse, with a wonderful atmosphere and beautifully preserved beams. The Room also comes with a private Onsen, so you can enjoy it anytime you like. The water is a bit hot, so you may want to stir it and adjust the temperature. The service was excellent, and I felt reassured that even if something came up or there was any trouble, everything would be handled well. For dinner at the restaurant “1/365,” they offer a course menu using seasonal ingredients that changes daily—similar to Quintessence. You can also add an optional pairing course, and I highly recommend choosing your preferred pairing! Each carefully selected drink was outstanding, and it was fascinating to hear stories from the sommelier and diploma holders. Also, on the morning after our stay, the manager kindly took us on a tour to a nearby mountain. We heard many stories that made me truly love Yamagata even more—and I definitely want to come back! Thank you very much!

    We had a wonderful experience.

I’ve always been impressed by the service at Resort Hotels in places like Bali and Da Nang, but this Hotel felt like it offers a different, new style of hospitality. The meals provided and the thoughtful extra amenities were truly appreciated. On the other hand, some people might find the highly entertainment-focused dining a bit overwhelming. We enjoyed everything, though.

    Not great.

I stayed here because someone I know spoke highly of it. Hmm… it was hard to judge—somewhat mixed. As other Reviews mention, it feels a bit like entertainment; those who enjoy that style will probably like it. For me, something more straightforward would have been fine… Serving wild mountain vegetables doesn’t automatically make a meal better. The main dish was Yonezawa beef—I was hoping for something more tender… The rice cooked in a pot was delicious. The bath was also great. I was woken up early in the morning by pigeons cooing, so please take measures to address the pigeons.

    The best Accommodation

The staff’s dedication and teamwork were outstanding. The Room was wonderful, and the Onsen—fed directly from the source thanks to the bath attendants’ passion—soothed both body and mind. I was truly impressed by the owner’s handmade soba, and deeply moved by the chefs’ respect for food and for the producers. This time, we had an early departure, so I left wishing I could have enjoyed more time at the Accommodation. We will visit again to enjoy your delicious soba, rice, cuisine, and excellent Onsen. Thank you for your thoughtful hospitality.

    Second stay at Takinami

Takinami’s meals are truly delicious and wonderful, but the best part is the bath in the Room. You won’t find an Onsen this amazing anywhere else. My first visit was during cherry season; this time it was spring mountain vegetables, and next time I’d like to come for a Multiple Night Stay during mushroom season in autumn.

Service commensurate with the accommodation fee

The staff-to-guest ratio was well balanced, allowing for attentive and satisfying service. The staff were highly professional, providing service that truly matched the price. The open-air hot spring bath with free-flowing source water was well maintained, spotless, and at the perfect temperature. The meals were beautifully crafted—ingredients, seasoning, tableware, and presentation were all first-class. The shared Facility areas were spacious and comfortable, and the private rooms were excellent as well. The Shuttle Service driver was outstanding. Thank you very much.

    The best accommodation!

The staff’s service is outstanding! From the warm welcome to the send-off, everything was courteous and made us feel truly comfortable. Throughout our stay, their greetings and thoughtful attention to detail were exceptional. We felt refreshed in both body and mind. The food, Onsen, Facility amenities, and guest room—everything was flawless. I highly recommend experiencing what makes this Accommodation so special at least once.

A traditional yet modern Onsen Accommodation in Yamagata.

An Accommodation conveniently located near Akayu Station, where the Shinkansen stops. They also provided Shuttle Service. Just outside the walls is an everyday townscape, while inside is a truly special retreat. The Accommodation makes thoughtful use of relocated historic buildings while feeling fresh and updated overall. In the lounge, traditional details are beautifully preserved: a tokonoma alcove with seasonal flowers, an engawa veranda, transom panels, tatami mats, and antique chests (still in use for loungewear). The space blends Japanese and Scandinavian design into a new kind of Japanese style. The complimentary drinks in the lounge include teas with distinctive flavors—and they’re delicious. The feel underfoot in the corridors strikes a perfect balance between old and new. Despite the name “Akayu,” the Onsen water is crystal clear and continuously flowing. There are in-Room baths as well as a larger shared bath. With no added water and careful handling to minimize exposure to air, they protect what matters most: water quality. Another nice touch is the drinking-water station near the entrance. Meals let you enjoy Yamagata at its finest. The meat and fish are excellent, but even the vegetables—like the napa cabbage served alongside meat dishes—are outstanding. It’s easy to see why this place earned Michelin Key recognition. The staff are dedicated and share what makes Yamagata special. Even offering rice as a souvenir reflects their confidence in their food. I visited twice—once in January 2026 and again in March 2026.

A Refined Retreat for Adults Only

I stayed here on the recommendation of a sommelier friend. At first, since the building is in an ordinary part of Akayu’s Onsen town, I wondered, “Wait—did I book the right place?” But once I passed through the impressive gate, it felt like stepping into another world. It was a wonderful property that cherishes an old building while incorporating a fresh, modern sensibility. I could feel the great taste throughout the entire building and in my Room as well. And above all, the water was truly exceptional. Both the first-floor bath and the in-room bath were outstanding. With free-flowing hot spring water direct from the source and an indoor bath available anytime, I was able to fully relax. The drink space on the first floor offered sake, wine, juice, and more—and it was fine to take them back to my Room—which was fantastic. The highlight of this trip—the meals—were thoughtfully composed with great care for each ingredient, and everything was delicious. You could really sense the chef’s skill. And as expected, plain white rice cooked with delicious water and high-quality rice was a feast in itself. The pairings matched to each course were also excellent; we enjoyed high-quality champagne, wine, and sake. The sommelier’s explanations and even how each dish was served were refined and wonderful. There were many young chefs and staff members in the restaurant; everyone worked earnestly and seriously with their cuisine, and despite their youth they provided attentive, warm service. It made for such an enjoyable—and delicious—meal experience. At night it’s still in town, yet it was very quiet—I slept so soundly it felt like being somewhere far from civilization. Breakfast the next day also came with many accompaniments for rice, so I could enjoy another great meal centered around delicious rice again. It’s just a little over two hours from Tokyo: if you leave Tokyo Station around noon you can arrive at Akayu Station before 2:30 p.m., where Takinami provides pickup; check-in is at 3:00 p.m., check-out is at 11:00 a.m., and you can still be back at Tokyo Station before 2:00 p.m.. During those 20 hours—from check-in at 3:00 p.m. to check-out at 11:00 a.m.—spent at “Takinami,” I felt able to Clear my mind of so many things—to unwind completely, refresh myself deeply—and return home feeling energized for what comes next day onward . Before visiting I thought Akayu might be a bit far away—but once I actually went there it felt surprisingly close—so I would love to visit again soon .

    The food was delicious!

We stayed at YAMAGATA 6. The open-air bath was easy to use and very nice. The Room was modern and pleasant, though it felt like there was quite a bit of unused space. With the high ceiling, it also felt a little cold. We didn’t use the meditation room (it was a bit intimidating to go in). The lobby’s sofa/chair sets with different color themes, the intricately carved railing in the tatami Room, and the tokonoma alcove were all very stylish. We took photos. Above all, the best part was the food. Everything from the small breakfast dishes to the main courses felt seasonal, with rich dashi flavor throughout—everything was delicious. My favorite was a croquette-like dish served with Funagata mushrooms. The bear soup and carp were also delicious on both days. The counter presentation was fun, but we found it more relaxing and enjoyable to dine in a private room. Thank you very much!

Outstanding cuisine and a 100% natural hot-spring bath—truly satisfying! Plenty of services that exceed the price.

As the title says, we were deeply impressed not only by the cuisine and the Onsen, but also by the all-inclusive services and experiences—it was a truly satisfying trip. Here is a chronological summary: - Reception: Something slightly disappointing happened. I will describe it at the end. - Room: We stayed in kura03. The private open-air bath in the Room has two types—hinoki (cypress) and stone. I chose the stone bath after hearing that the hot water springs up directly from beneath your feet. The temperature was perfect—so good it made me want to thank whoever manages it—and my skin felt wonderfully smooth. It also snowed heavily at night, so we were able to enjoy a “snow-viewing bath” the next day, which became a great memory. One small downside was that the bed is on the second floor of the maisonette layout, so it wasn’t as easy to lie down casually; however, it did encourage us to stay more active. - Soba-making demonstration & yoga: During the soba-making demonstration led by the owner, you can watch soba being made while listening to various stories and enjoying a sake tasting. It was fun learning about Takinami’s history and their dedication to soba. Yoga seems to be offered about four times a month; it happened to be available during our stay, so I joined. It was my first time doing yoga, but it felt wonderful and helped loosen my body. They said it also sharpens your senses and makes flavors easier to appreciate, so I recommend doing yoga before dinner. - Dinner: Every dish was thoughtfully crafted and delicious. Even ingredient combinations that initially made me wonder if they would work came together beautifully, and I could really feel their attention to detail in both sauces and cooking methods. I eat slowly, and with course meals dishes often pile up on the table—but that didn’t happen here, so I could enjoy everything at a relaxed pace. If you enjoy alcohol in particular, you’ll have plenty of time to savor both food and drinks. - Breakfast: Travel breakfasts are usually too large for me and leave me uncomfortably full, but this one was just right—I enjoyed every bite until the end. The egg dish (like a modern-style Onsen egg) left a strong impression. Finally, about what happened at reception: after seeing an questionnaire form I filled out at check-in , staff said—in front of my husband—“Happy birthday! We’ll bring out a birthday plate while singing during dinner!” That made me very sad because it ruined my surprise for him . During our Check Reservation phone call beforehand , they had told me they would not mention anything about plate at reception because it was meant as surprise for my husband ,and reassured me they would still prepare properly . Since everything else about this Accommodation experience was wonderful , starting off like that left lingering disappointment. That said , aside from this issue ,it truly became great trip overall, and we would like visit again .

Unforgettable White Rice! Exquisite Cuisine and Warm Hospitality

Regarding the food, it was by far the most delicious of any Accommodation I have stayed at so far. The portions were not too large, and the flavors were not too strong, so it went down easily even for a stomach tired from dining out in the city. I will never forget how delicious the white rice at dinner was. On my way home, I bought 1 kg of rice as a souvenir. What also left a strong impression was the attentive hospitality of everyone at the Accommodation. In particular, the Vice President kindly assisted me with everything from my Room to drinks at dinner until I left, and I am truly grateful. I’m glad I chose the SAKURA Room. Not only was the view wonderful, but the bath was also amazing. I was interested in the morning tour, but decided not to join and instead relaxed in my Room just as I had hoped. Another memorable point was the furniture throughout the building. Every chair was comfortable to sit on, and each piece had great taste—I felt soothed by the space itself as well.

My family of five stayed at KURA01 in October. The hospitality, service, atmosphere of the Accommodation, bath, and meals were all wonderful. In particular, the staff member who assisted us at dinner was warmly friendly without feeling forced, yet still very polite, which made us feel truly comfortable. The dishes made with local ingredients were also outstanding. We especially enjoyed items we rarely get to try—such as mushrooms served raw—so it was not only delicious but also a fun experience. It was my first time having food like that. It was clear that they place great importance on every aspect of their service. Although we traveled from far away, we would definitely like to visit again.

I have stayed here every year since 2020, and this time I used the first-floor Room with a stone bath. It was a little more spacious than the other Rooms and very comfortable. I always appreciate the service during meals, and everything was delicious. However, this time I felt the amount of food may have been slightly less than before. I understand that it can’t be helped in these times, but I was disappointed not to be able to enjoy matsutake mushrooms, which I had been looking forward to. As for the Onsen, my belief that this Accommodation has the best Onsen remains unchanged, so I would like to stay again. Thank you very much.

This is an Accommodation I’d love to visit again in a different season.

The cedar floorboards felt wonderful under bare feet, the Onsen was superb, the staff were warm and welcoming, and we thoroughly enjoyed the delicious food and drinks. Other than the changing room at the large public bath being a little small, there was nothing that concerned us. It was also nice to be able to choose between a yukata or loungewear with a T-shirt. As I was traveling with my elderly mother, it’s a shame we couldn’t join the morning tour, but instead we fully enjoyed a morning bath in our Room. This is an Accommodation we’d love to visit again in another season.

    Difficult.

The old building was used creatively, though some aspects felt unfamiliar, perhaps due to differences in values. Dinner started all at once at a set time, but some guests arrived late despite the scheduled start. Each dish came with an explanation; unfortunately, there was no quiet moment to rest my ears. It seemed someone was celebrating a birthday, but the singing and celebration felt unpleasant to me. To step away from daily noise and work demands and spend time as a couple—time to respect each other and heal—I want a calm, quiet atmosphere.

This was my second stay, and once you discover this Accommodation, it becomes hard to look for a place to stay in other areas. If you want the same level of quality, it’s not easy to find another Accommodation—so you end up coming back here. Simply wonderful.

    It was excellent.

This was my second visit, and just like the first time, everything was impeccable – from the meals, the quality of the Onsen, the room setup, to the hospitality of both the management and staff. I will definitely visit again. A few minor concerns: low water pressure in the men's large bath shower, an air purifier filter in the room that (probably) seemed old and emitted an odor, and (possibly) low-quality toothbrushes. These are small issues overall.

The meals were perfectly balanced, allowing us to enjoy the natural flavors of the ingredients, and the attentive service was excellent. We look forward to visiting again during the wild vegetable season.
