A wonderful Onsen Accommodation surrounded by green mountains

A wonderful place surrounded by greenery. The staff were very kind, the food was delicious, and the Onsen was lovely. We visited in summer this time, but would like to come again in a different season. While many Accommodations offer a buffet breakfast, it was great to be served an excellent Japanese breakfast individually. The view from the large terrace of our Room was beautiful, and we were able to relax and take our time. On the stargazing terrace at night, we saw shooting stars many times—it was amazing. Points for improvement: the welcome tea and sweets upon arrival did not feel properly prepared, and there were no welcome Japanese sweets in the Room either. Also, even for areas with just a few steps, I think it would be better to have handrails, even small ones.

    Wonderful

We stayed here on a trip with a family we know, and it was wonderful as always. We’ve stayed several times, so both my wife and I can relax with peace of mind—this is our favorite hot spring Accommodation. The family staying with us was also very satisfied, making it the perfect vacation. Since one of our group had difficulty walking, we truly appreciate you accommodating our various requests. We’d love to stay again. Thank you always.

An Accommodation where you can stay with your dog.

This is a renovated cottage-style Accommodation that allows you to stay with your dog. It felt just right for two people (a couple). With children, it would be quite cramped. The meals are typical of the New Awaji group. Personally, I don’t need this many dishes. I’d rather see a shift toward offering a clear specialty dish, but since this is the kind of Ryokan meal many Japanese guests expect, I suppose it’s inevitable that it stays average. The wine and sake list to pair with the food needs serious reconsideration. They should bring in a sommelier who can oversee the group as a whole. It was pretty bad. Overall, my satisfaction level was about 3.5 out of 5. Because it’s a rare Accommodation where you can stay with your dog, I really hope they keep improving.

It’s a good Accommodation, but for the price...

Because our previous stay was excellent in both seating and cuisine, we made another Reservation this time. However... Cuisine Perhaps because we chose a different Plan, the food was underwhelming. The ingredient quality felt lower (the meat was about three small dice-sized scraps, and the fish dish was also disappointing). I should have checked the course details more carefully before making the Reservation. Given the price, I let my guard down. Bath This can’t really be helped, but there were many dead insects floating in the bath, and gnats kept hitting my face nonstop. If you dislike insects, it may be tough. Room We stayed in what seemed to be a standard Japanese-style Room, but once four futons were laid out they were packed tightly and even overlapped. That Room should probably be limited to a maximum of two guests. There is also a table, so anyone at the back had to step over the front futons to move around. The entire Room was covered with futons. Service We were told that marshmallow roasting would start at 18:00. When we went after that time, we were told it still wasn’t ready, and they couldn’t say when it would be. Customer service When we bought many souvenirs, staff didn’t know the prices and wrote them down one by one while checking each item’s price at the shop counter. The wait was frustrating. Support The phone system is automated; after following the prompts we ended up waiting for a long time, only to be told later to call back again. I was surprised that an Accommodation could be unreachable by phone multiple times. It is a very lovely Ryokan overall, but considering the price, these points stood out to us.

If you have a dog in...

If you have a dog in your family, I highly recommend staying here. It’s a charming, traditional Japanese-style Ryokan with a wonderful atmosphere. The staff are all attentive and considerate. Both dinner and breakfast were beautiful to look at and absolutely delicious. The baths are clean, uncluttered, and above all, quiet—you can truly relax. If you want to spend a peaceful vacation, I strongly recommend this place. Early in the morning, milk was delivered to our Room and it was very tasty. There was also a wide variety of drinks provided in the Room, which we enjoyed. The bedding was so comfortable that we slept very well. One small note: the dog-friendly Rooms are in an annex, so you do need to walk a short distance up a slope. Other than that, everything was perfect. We will stay again—thank you very much.

The breakfast is outstanding! The Onsen is also wonderful—an Accommodation that truly goes above and beyond for the price.

Overall, this is a wonderful Accommodation that clearly puts in tremendous effort and offers quality beyond the price. - The breakfast that truly impressed me The standout was the breakfast. In my view, it was on par with (or better than) breakfasts at Accommodations in the 50,000-yen-per-person-per-night class. Instead of a typical Ryokan-style set breakfast, I was excited to find the rare-for-breakfast “Hōraku-yaki.” Made with seasonal vegetables, it looked beautiful and tasted amazing. The sudachi-and-soy-milk morning juice and the corn rice were also delicious. It still stays with me even now. I felt that this breakfast alone made the stay worthwhile. - “Waterfall Onsen” surrounded by nature & a private open-air bath with sauna In lush greenery, the Waterfall Onsen right beside you was incredible—the soothing roar of the falls echoed through the area and had an outstanding healing effect. Since it switches between men and women in the morning and evening, it’s a shame you can only use it once (either morning or late afternoon to night), because it was such a fantastic Onsen. The private open-air bath also came with a sauna, which was great. It was properly cleaned after each group, and the dokudami tea was delicious as well. The covered walkway leading to the baths and dining area also had a wonderful atmosphere and felt very special. - Dinner & service (with high hopes) The teppan-style grilled meat at dinner wasn’t large in portion size, but for this price range I couldn’t believe how high-quality—and tasty—the meat was. The only slight downside was that the hot plate took quite a while to heat up. All of your international staff members left a very positive impression with how hard they worked; however, some explanations of dishes were delivered a bit too quickly to catch everything. I think occasionally checking pacing would make things even better. I’ve written quite a bit, but maintaining this level of quality at this price is truly impressive. It became a very good memory for me. When I visit this area again, I would love to stay here again. Thank you very much.

    A quiet riverside accommodation

We visited as a couple with our 4-year-old child and one dog. This is a quiet Accommodation by the river. The bath with a view of the waterfall was wonderful. All the staff were courteous and attentive. The meals were delicious. They also lent out picture books for children. It was a great place to take a bath and relax.

    A Relaxing Accommodation

We stayed here during our trip to Kagawa. The place felt like a cottage built into the mountain slope, and we enjoyed a truly out-of-the-ordinary atmosphere. Everything was wonderful—the Accommodation’s ambiance, the Facility, and the meals—and we were very satisfied. Above all, we were most impressed by how kind and attentive all the staff were. The person who explained the dishes noticed that I’m left-handed and arranged the chopsticks so they were easier for me to use, which really warmed my heart. Thank you very much—we’d love to visit again.

    We had a relaxing stay!

The meals were very delicious, and all the staff were extremely kind. In this quiet mountain village setting, I was truly able to relax. When I asked about a good place for a walk, I was advised to walk around Satoyama Hutte. The distance was short but there were some slopes, so it was great exercise—and then I enjoyed another bath.

An Accommodation You’ll Want to Visit Again

From check-in through the guidance and explanations to our Room, the attentive service at the dining area, and even the farewell after check-out, everything was wonderfully comfortable. Regarding meals, two of the four guests had requested accommodations for multiple allergies, and each time a dish was served, everything was explained carefully one by one. We were also impressed by the thoughtful attention—such as providing separate hand towels for a guest with a citrus allergy. Both dinner and breakfast featured many dishes that highlighted local seasonal ingredients, with just the right portions so we could enjoy every bite to the end. Everything was delicious, but the salt-grilled sweetfish was especially outstanding! The open-air bath also felt spacious for the number of guests (at least it seemed so), and we were able to relax while enjoying the sound of a nearby stream and fresh greenery. We also appreciated the in-Room coffee machine, complimentary drinks in the refrigerator, and even morning milk delivery—services that made it easy to unwind in our Room. Since we stayed in a detached guest room, we could spend time together as a family without worrying about noise carrying to neighboring Rooms. When we visit Kagawa again, this is an Accommodation we will definitely want to stay at—it became an unforgettable trip memory for us.

This was our second stay. Among many Accommodations, we find the open-air bath here to be the most wonderful and our favorite. This time, we visited for a final trip with my mother, who is bedridden. We truly appreciated having a wheelchair prepared for my mother, who has difficulty walking. You kindly accommodated our various requests, allowing us to stay with peace of mind. Thank you very much for your thoughtful consideration. It became a wonderful trip!

    It was cold.

It was so cold that it was snowing that day, but when we were shown to the Room, the heater wasn’t on and it was freezing. Since I had informed you of our arrival time, I would have appreciated it if the heating had been turned on in advance. Also, even if there isn’t much space to change shoes, there were no slippers in the Room. Having to walk barefoot down the cold hallway inside the Room was very disappointing. (I asked at the front desk and received disposable slippers.) In addition, changing the temperature setting for the bath in the Room required contacting the front desk and having someone come to adjust it, which was quite inconvenient. We also chose the irori-style meal, but it consisted of only two items: fish and dengaku. This was also not what we expected. The Room has large windows with a beautiful view outside, but I was very worried about whether people could see in from outside. There was no explanation from the person who guided us to the Room, so I even went outside to check. I have stayed at Awaji Group Accommodations several times recently and had some very good experiences, which is why I chose this one, but this stay was very disappointing.

    After crossing the S...

After crossing the Seto Ohashi Bridge and driving along a small road through Shikoku’s nostalgic satoyama countryside, you arrive at Asan Kotonami, quietly nestled beside a beautiful mountain stream. With an elegant fireplace in the lobby and tasteful Japanese paintings placed throughout, the refined atmosphere is evident. Along with delicious cuisine and an open-air bath built right in front of the woods, it truly feels like a “mountain hot-spring retreat.” I have been staying here since shortly after it opened, and I always leave feeling refreshed—I am sincerely grateful to all the staff. This time, a room became available at the last minute and I was lucky enough to stay. I’m looking forward to visiting again in another season.

A secluded, lodge-style Ryokan with fully private rooms

I stayed here during a temporary return to Japan. I was able to relax in a completely private room. The building is old, but the interior has been renovated, so it didn’t bother me much. The large public bath was spacious, and I also enjoyed the private open-air bath (by reservation for a set time). The meals used local ingredients and were delicious. In winter, it would have been nice if humidifiers were provided as standard.

    Fugu Fin Sake Souvenirs

    1. In the fugu course, the fin in the pre-dinner hire-zake had not been grilled and was placed in the sake raw. Although it was replaced, it made me feel quite unwell. 2. The dinner course menu provided was for another table. 2. The bottled simmered bamboo shoots from the shop tasted sour. I contacted the producer directly and was advised not to eat it due to a storage issue, and the producer sent a replacement directly to me.

    Relaxing Accommodation

I had a relaxing stay at this Ryokan with a very calm atmosphere. The staff were kind and provided excellent service. I stayed in a room with an open-air bath, and the Onsen was absolutely amazing. The large public bath, where you can enjoy the view of the stream, was also wonderful. The remaining snow from a few days ago added to the beautiful scenery. The meals, featuring local specialties, were incredibly delicious. If I have the chance, I would definitely like to visit this accommodation again.

I want to stay here again!!

The accommodation was quiet during my stay, and the bath was almost like a private experience. I enjoyed the open-air bath with a view of the waterfall and the deep bath twice, both in the morning and evening. The open-air bath in my room was also excellent, and I used it twice as well. The reason I chose this accommodation was for its irori (hearth) cuisine, which did not disappoint—grilled fish and local dishes were outstanding! Every dish was delicious, paired with local sake that made for an exceptional dining experience. Breakfast offered a variety of dishes that were flavorful; I even had seconds of rice. The drink served before breakfast was incredibly delicious! Being from Tokushima myself, it brought back nostalgic feelings and comforted me. I also used the spa services to relax my body and mind after work fatigue—it felt like ascending to heaven. It truly felt like a reward for all my hard work, leaving me happy and content. Complimentary coffee in the room as well as drinks in the refrigerator were another nice touch. Trying roasted marshmallows for the first time turned out to be delightful! Additionally, soaking in the footbath allowed me to enjoy peaceful moments until check-out at 11:00 AM. Now for some minor points: The pilling on the danzen (room wear) caught my attention. Also, there seemed to be some brown residue on part of where water flows in the open-air bath of my room; it could be cleaned off by rubbing with fingers. I would love to visit again. Thank you for such an amazing experience at Asan Kotonami. Next time, I'd like to come during a different season...

Girls' Trip for 5: Stay at Satoyama Hut and Enjoy a Winter Onsen Getaway

Gathered in Okayama and took the Limited Express Nanpu to Kotohira. Although we considered renting a car, we opted for the Shuttle Service for a more relaxed trip. Arrived in about 30 minutes from the station. The breathtaking view of Asan Kotohira spread out before us as soon as we got off, leaving us in awe. A staff member kindly offered to take our photo with the Accommodation in the background. Relaxed by the fireplace in the lobby while enjoying a welcome drink and snack along with an explanation of the Accommodation. The sweet potato snack was delicious. The Satoyama Hutte is located away from the main building. Fortunately, we stayed in Room 102, which is closest to the entrance; otherwise, it would have been quite a walk uphill to other rooms. The Room was spacious with two beds, a living area (where three futons can be laid out), and surrounded by greenery—though it might attract many insects during summer. Guests staying at Satoyama Hutte can reserve private baths (with sauna or stone spa), but unfortunately, they were fully booked except for one hour at 6 PM on that day. With some time before dinner, we enjoyed complimentary beer and yuzu juice from our Hutte's refrigerator as well as tea and coffee from its machine while having leisurely conversations. The main building's baths offer variety with rock baths and open-air options on a rotation system between genders. However, I found sitting-style stone spas less comfortable than expected; still, soaking in their attached private bath was relaxing. The loungewear provided was very comfortable—a separate top-and-bottom style—and even came with a cloak (reminiscent of Harry Potter), which made trips between buildings much easier. Dinner required moving back to the main building—a bit inconvenient honestly—but seating arrangements were spacious enough that conversations among five people felt distant at times. The meal portions were just right without any fried dishes; perhaps that's why it felt light yet satisfying! Especially memorable were vegetables cooked Hohraku-yaki style—absolutely delicious! Men might find portions slightly smaller but could adjust thanks to freshly cooked rice served per table using clay pots. Breakfast was equally satisfying—vegetable-focused yet balanced with fish and meat prepared through grilling or steaming methods. Before departure, I purchased souvenirs at their shop featuring unique Shikoku specialties like food items not commonly found elsewhere or hand creams used by Thai salons alongside snacks like sweet potato treats given earlier at check-in or Wasanbon sugar sweets—all carefully curated selections worth trying!

    I found a wonderful accommodation.

I enjoyed a trip within Shikoku as I couldn't take a long break from work. There seem to be many more wonderful places to visit and accommodations to discover. This time, I stayed in a room with an open-air bath and had meals in a private room with an irori hearth. The meals were served at the perfect pace, so there was no waiting, and everything from the salt-grilled sweetfish to teppanyaki and Koshihikari rice was absolutely delicious. The staff left a great impression; they seemed relatively young but were all very pleasant. The large public bath was relaxing, and I could enjoy the autumn leaves while soaking in the warm water. Thank you for providing complimentary amenities like the espresso machine, tea, and juice in the room. My husband and I are already talking about coming back again during another season!

    About the Dog Run

We stayed at this accommodation with our family and beloved dog at the end of summer vacation. Located in a serene, mountainous area with the sound of a flowing river and fresh air, it was an absolutely fantastic location. The food was also delicious! Being surrounded by nature, it’s understandable that there were many insects, but we were surprised to find a large centipede indoors. While insect-repellent items are provided, we felt it’s essential to take individual precautions as well. There is one more point I must mention for awareness: Our dog is a slightly smaller Shiba Inu with a height under 45cm (not a miniature Shiba). This accommodation has a design where the dog run is located below the shared wooden deck area accessible via stairs. The height difference serves as fencing on one side, and there is no enclosure on the wooden deck itself; instead, there’s a gate at the top of the stairs leading down to prevent dogs from getting out. As first-time visitors here, we made the mistake of letting our dog roam freely on the wooden deck—only for him to easily jump over its height and escape outside. He ran around in the garden of the facility before crossing over to parking areas and heading toward main roads across bridges. We were terrified he might get hit by cars or that we wouldn’t be able to bring him back home safely again. Fortunately, another guest arriving at that moment noticed what was happening and stood near where vehicles exit onto main roads from parking lots—blocking off potential danger zones effectively until capture efforts succeeded nearby within said lot itself!
