    Family Trip

The meals were buffet-style with a wide variety, including dishes prepared right in front of us, and our 6-year-old was happy to have so many options to choose from. Thank you as well for your kind assistance when our child spilled a drink. The bath was spacious, and we enjoyed it both morning and night; it left our skin feeling smooth, which was great. We were also able to join the evening yumomi experience, and the taiko drum show was powerful and fun. Access to Yubatake was convenient, and I think the location is ideal for fully enjoying Kusatsu. The Room was also very spacious, and since our child always looked forward to being the first to enter the Room, they were excited and delighted. We also enjoyed the Onsen manju provided in the Room. We stayed for two nights, and it was nice that different sweets were prepared on the second day compared with the first. The toilet lock was a bit difficult to close, so it might be good to have it repaired. We would like to visit again.

Please focus on improving the "quality of meals" and "flow of movement" rather than customer service.

The quality of the hot spring in Kusatsu was excellent, but the satisfaction did not match the price of approximately 27,000 yen per person. × Points of Disappointment Quality and Smell of Meals: The buffet area had an oily smell, with some unpleasant odors. The dishes lacked depth in flavor and felt below the level of home-cooked meals, which was very disappointing. Japanese side dishes lacked richness from dashi broth and tasted overly simple, as if only sugar and soy sauce were used. It is essential for whoever is in charge to ensure thorough recipe adherence and final taste checks by the head chef. Long Waiting Time: Due to an overly detailed guidance system, guests are made to wait a long time in the lobby after check-in. This does not consider guests' desire to rest quickly in their rooms. Waiting for a guide after a long journey feels burdensome. Simplifying this process by limiting room guidance to VIP guests might be worth considering. Excessive Explanations: While being guided to the room, explanations about locations such as toilets or washbasins are provided but feel unnecessary. These facilities are self-explanatory upon seeing them. Guests genuinely wish for private time as soon as possible. It would also allow staff members more time to rest. 〇 Positive Points The quality of the hot spring (as expected from Kusatsu). Staff members were earnest but seemed too bound by manuals. Rather than excessive "hospitality," we hope you prioritize delicious meals, a clean environment, and quiet moments where we can be left undisturbed.

    Highly recommended.

We had a very comfortable stay this time. We reserved a special Japanese-style room, and the room was very clean, spacious, and thoroughly cleaned, allowing us to enjoy our stay throughout. This time we stayed with three people, but I believe the room is spacious enough for larger groups as well. It was very convenient with two toilets and two sinks in the washroom. The large public bath was spacious for both men and women, with one bath featuring hot water and another slightly cooler bath located nearby, allowing guests to choose based on their preference—this was excellent. Additionally, the Sakura Lounge was relaxing and very comfortable. There were many foreign staff members present; however, their training seemed thorough as they provided attentive service that gave us peace of mind and made our stay pleasant. Dinner offered a wide variety of dishes—not necessarily "exquisite," but there seemed to be something for everyone’s taste preferences—a thoughtful touch from the accommodation side that we appreciated. If I may make one suggestion: since the bedding consisted of just one mat per person, providing thicker bedding would have made resting even more comfortable. Overall, it was a highly satisfying stay. Thank you very much!

    The bath is excellent.

The front desk staff were friendly and polite, and the parking attendants were also kind and responsive. The bath was clean, the facilities were well-maintained, and everything was thoroughly cleaned. I particularly liked the massage chair. However, unfortunately, as soon as we entered the guest room, both of us couldn't stop sneezing—possibly due to the air conditioner or dust. When I refilled water in the air purifier's tank, I noticed black mold sediment inside, which made me feel that cleaning might not have been thorough. When we turned on the bedroom air conditioner, there was a moldy smell that caused my husband to have a stuffy nose and difficulty sleeping. This issue stood out to us. Since it is an older building, this might be unavoidable... but next time we may try staying in the new building instead.

The Pros and Cons of Staying at Hotel Sakurai with Elderly Family Members

For our first trip to Kusatsu and traveling with elderly family members, we chose this accommodation for a relaxing and worry-free stay. On the day of arrival, there was major disruption in the city’s transportation network, and the express train we planned to take was canceled. We managed to arrive by transferring between a bullet train and local trains. While many guests may travel by car, this situation didn’t seem to be acknowledged at check-in, as the response felt somewhat standard. A small gesture of consideration could have left a much better impression. We stayed for 2 nights and 3 days; dinner on the first night was a kaiseki meal, while the second night featured a buffet. Honestly speaking, switching these—buffet on the first night followed by kaiseki on the last—might have been more satisfying due to noticeable differences in food quality. Although I’ve mentioned some negative points, there were plenty of positives as well. The Japanese-style room was spacious with great views and very family-friendly in design. The large public bath area was expansive with four massage chairs available. Having ReFa hair dryers was also a delightful touch. While staff interactions were generally manual-based, including those from international staff members working there, their polite demeanor and earnest efforts conveyed genuine hospitality throughout our stay.

    For Adults

Our annual year-end Onsen trip. This time, we stayed at Sakurai-san's Ryokan. The building is old, but it was well-maintained and clean enough to compensate for that. Since we have a picky eater child, there were some items in the course meal they couldn't eat. However, the additional order of fugu and filet steak made them very happy. Both breakfast and dinner were served in the same dining area. While it was fine for breakfast, the atmosphere felt a bit lacking for a leisurely dinner (it lacked a sense of luxury). There are semi-private dining spaces available, which I think would be better as they allow guests to enjoy their meals without worrying about others around them. We also used the bath and lounge facilities, which were excellent. On our way out, one of the front desk staff kindly wished us "A Happy New Year." Although this Ryokan has many foreign staff members, all of them spoke polite and beautiful Japanese. I've noticed more foreign staff at Ryokans and Hotels recently; however, without a doubt, Sakurai-san's team stands out as the best we've encountered so far!

    Hot springs are the best!

This is my third visit. The onsen water here is exceptional. I believe there are three types of water at Sakurai, and I enjoyed the different types in both the indoor and outdoor baths. The changing area has been renovated and is very clean. The massage chairs provided are free to use, which was perfect for my tired body after snowboarding. Ice cream was also available as always. The room prepared for us had an additional separate space that our family of four couldn't even fully utilize. We had booked at a low price, so we didn't expect much, but we were surprised by how spacious the room was. Previously, I left a review mentioning that while the kaiseki cuisine showed effort in presentation, the taste was average; this time we opted for the buffet instead. It offered a wide variety of dishes with flavors that were satisfying overall. The staff members were kind and attentive regardless of whether they were Japanese or from abroad (apologies to the staff member who helped carry our luggage—I regret not giving you a tip). When I asked at reception if they had any large bandages because I scraped my knee, they went out of their way to find one larger than standard size for me. That said, some aspects remain unchanged—for example, how things are handled when parking or unloading luggage could still be improved. Nevertheless, with such wonderful baths here at Sakurai Onsen in Kusatsu, I'm sure I'll return again next time I'm in town!

    Anniversary Trip

Stayed on November 30, 7th year. We are truly grateful for the exceptional hospitality provided on our special anniversary. The staff's service, the Room, and the meals (especially the staff's attentiveness during dining) were all incredibly kind and made for a very pleasant experience. We enjoyed seasonal kaiseki cuisine, and thanks to the thoughtful timing of serving and attention to detail, we were able to relax at ease. The food was absolutely delicious. Additionally, various thoughtful touches throughout the Hotel delighted us immensely. We were completely satisfied with our stay. Next time, I would love to visit with my entire family. Thank you so much!

    Annual Trip

Every year, four of us travel together. It was our first time in Kusatsu, and Sakurai was the best! The Hotel, the service, and all the staff. The Onsen and the food—everything was excellent. We decided to make Sakurai Ryokan our regular destination. Thank you for a wonderful time!

    I had a relaxing stay.

We stayed here to celebrate my husband's birthday and our silver wedding anniversary. Thank you for the thoughtful gift of local sake. The spacious interior, lounge, and separate baths provided a luxurious experience, allowing us to relax fully. The open-air bath with sulfur-rich Onsen water was excellent. The hotel is within walking distance of the Yubatake area for an evening stroll, so we didn’t need to use the hotel’s shuttle bus. We also enjoyed the hotel's original Yumomi and drum performance show.

    Had too high expectations.

Ranked highly among professional selections of Ryokan, I had high expectations, but everything felt outdated. The buffet, in particular, seemed aimed at a budget-conscious crowd and was disappointing.

    The buffet is delicious.

The Room was upgraded to a new building's Japanese-style room, which was very spacious and had two toilets and sinks, making it very convenient. The TV was also very large. The hot spring quality was excellent, and the large public bath was spacious. A luxurious ReFa hair dryer was provided. Despite rising prices, this Ryokan offered freshly squeezed orange juice and fresh fruits at the buffet, which are rare these days. The coffee was delicious as well. Other menu items were also tasty.

    Highly Rated Hotel

I believe it was a Hotel that lived up to its Review ratings. The main purpose of the trip, the Onsen, had abundant water and provided a very pleasant experience. I was also surprised by the high quality of the complimentary massage chairs. The Room was a lovely Hollywood Twin Room. The meals featured an abundance of seafood, and as others mentioned, the sashimi was fresh and delicious. Traditional events like Yumomi and drum performances added to the charm of this Accommodation. During our 4-night trip to Kusatsu, we stayed at Sakurai on the first night, and it left us so satisfied that it felt like our trip had already concluded! If we have another chance next year, we would love to stay at Sakurai again. Lastly, if I may point out one thing: while the Hollywood Twin Room was wonderful overall, there were some issues such as leftover trash in the bin and an extremely dirty humidifier tank with brown residue all over it when I tried to refill it—this came as quite a shock. I believe this must have been an isolated case but kindly check on this matter. Other than that, everything else about this Hotel was truly excellent. Thank you for your hospitality!

    The Onsen, especiall...

The Onsen, especially the open-air bath, was at the perfect temperature and extremely relaxing. However, the disappointing part was the food. Although it was a buffet, each dish lacked quality. If the food remains as it is, I would not want to visit again. Since the place had a good reputation beforehand, it made me even more disappointed.

As expected from a top-ranked Ryokan.

I stayed here during my first visit to Kusatsu Onsen. Although I originally wanted to stay in a room at Hotel Ichii with a view of the Yubatake, I chose this place due to its high ranking among ryokans like Otani Sanso, Tokiwa Hotel, and Shiratama no Yu. The experience was decent overall. There were no major flaws, but compared to the aforementioned ryokans, it felt slightly less impressive. What stood out was the lounge! You can enjoy as much alcohol as you like here, including local sake! However, it's open during dinner hours, which makes it hard to fully enjoy. Another small but pleasant surprise was the toothpaste provided—it was travel-sized and sold commercially rather than disposable ones that come with toothbrushes (which I dislike). They even replenished it during my multiple night stay. As for the onsen facilities: if you book a suite room, there is a separate onsen available exclusively for suite guests. It's small without amenities like saunas but quiet due to fewer people—something I appreciated. The meals were average. Even staying in a suite didn’t grant any special seating at the buffet; although on the second night we had kaiseki dining in a private room, it wasn’t particularly memorable. One downside is that it's located slightly far from Yubatake—closer proximity would have been ideal. Overall rating would be high considering everything; however, perhaps due to expectations set by its ranking among ryokans, there was some sense of underwhelming aspects too. That said—you won’t regret staying here!

Kusatsu truly offers the best hot spring water quality.

After a long time, we visited Kusatsu and chose Sakurai as our accommodation because we prioritized a buffet-style meal for our small child. Overall satisfaction was average. As expected from a large-scale ryokan, the service felt more like routine work rather than genuine hospitality. The meals were not bad. The onsen was exceptional, as expected from Kusatsu (the quality of the spring water). However, the view from the open-air bath facing an old apartment building could be improved. It lacked charm and atmosphere; simple enhancements like greenery or screens could make a big difference—what a missed opportunity! The Yumomi Show and Taiko Drum Show were outstanding. The Taiko Drum Show exceeded expectations with its incredible quality!

A Hotel That Keeps You Entertained

We stayed as a couple. The plan included access to the SAKURA Lounge, so we spent time before dinner enjoying delicious drinks, snacks, and sweets. The lounge had a great atmosphere—quiet, comfortable, and perfect for relaxing with a drink. Since it was a holiday weekend, many guests were staying at the accommodation; however, the private bath was limited to 20 groups per day and was not crowded. We could also choose from several brands of shampoo and conditioner. With events available, this hotel is great for family trips with children but also ideal for couples looking to relax quietly and leisurely. We would love to stay here again!

It was a good accommodation, but it felt like a missed opportunity.

The building is a traditional and quite large hotel, very impressive. The staff provided excellent service. However, I arrived at the hotel at 15:30 and was directed to a distant parking area (Parking B). Additionally, I chose kaiseki for dinner, but the only available time was 19:30. Most hotels usually serve dinner around 18:00, but here it seems either the dining venue is too small for the number of guests or there is a shortage of staff. Moreover, there was a Yumomi show starting at 20:15, making it impossible to finish dinner beforehand. While arrangements were made so that guests could leave midway to watch the show and return later to continue their meal, we ended up finishing dinner past 21:00 upon returning. This scheduling issue felt unreasonable. If dinner could start around 19:00 or if the show began at approximately 20:30 instead, guests could enjoy both without feeling rushed; unfortunately, this lack of consideration was disappointing. The quality of the meal itself was excellent and so was the outdoor Wata-no-Yu bath; however, my main highlight—the evening meal—was slightly disappointing due to these issues. For those planning to enjoy a leisurely dining experience at this hotel, I recommend checking in no later than 15:00.

This was my first stay at Sakurai's place. The Kusatsu hot springs are wonderful, especially the open-air bath with "Wata-no-Yu," which warmed me to the core. The meals were buffet-style, and I was very satisfied with the taste—it was excellent. Both the steak and seasoned rice were truly delicious. One disappointing point was that the air purifier in the Room made an unusually loud noise, almost as if it were broken. It sounded quite strange. Other than that, everything else was great—the staff's hospitality was outstanding, and I would love to stay here again!

A Hotel That Makes You Glad You Came

This was my second stay. The building is a bit old, but it was very clean and comfortable. There were plenty of staff members who were always attentive, so I had no issues at all. My grandmother in her 90s also had a wonderful time and enjoyed her stay. I would love to stay here again the next time I visit Kusatsu Onsen.

    Sakura Lounge is amazing!

This was my first time staying at the Hotel for two nights, and I had access to the SAKURA LOUNGE, which made it feel very worthwhile. Although we didn’t have dinner as my husband cannot eat large portions due to health reasons, we thoroughly enjoyed the SAKURA LOUNGE from 3:00 PM to 7:30 PM. It offered light meals including nine seasonal small dishes, along with a variety of drinks such as wine, sake, and local beer. It was very satisfying and allowed us to have a relaxing evening even without dinner. We only had breakfast during our stay, but the breakfast options were abundant. The bath facilities were available anytime from check-in until 10:00 AM in the morning, which was convenient. We also enjoyed participating in activities like the Yumomi Show and watching the authentic Sakura Taiko Drum Show. The souvenir shop was impressively spacious with a wide selection of products that surprised us! The staff members at reception, cleaning services, and buffet areas—including international staff—were all very attentive and professional. If given another opportunity, I would definitely stay here again!

An accommodation you'll want to visit again

We chose to stay at Hotel Sakurai for our wedding anniversary trip. While many accommodations nowadays feel impersonal due to efficiency and fewer staff, we were warmly welcomed by numerous staff members at Sakurai, truly experiencing the joy of staying at an Onsen accommodation. The baths were spacious and excellent, especially the outdoor Onsen, which had wonderful water quality. Both dinner and breakfast were served buffet-style, allowing us to enjoy a luxurious and elegant time. The room was clean with a great view as well. At checkout, we even received a souvenir as a celebration of our wedding anniversary. Despite having many guests, their attention to detail was impeccable, allowing us to have an unforgettable experience. The staff's hospitality was truly professional. We would love to stay here again in the future!

    First Impression...

This was my first stay at Sakurai's accommodation. The room was clean and spacious, living up to its reputation. The front desk staff provided excellent service, even late at night, greeting guests heading to the bath. However, I had some concerns about the elderly parking staff's attitude. Due to roof repairs, a net covered the carport area, making it impossible to park near the entrance. While I understood this situation upon arriving in light rain, I was directed to a parking space and instructed to carry my luggage from there into the facility. I requested to unload my luggage closer to the entrance and was reluctantly allowed after some discussion. Unfortunately, there was no smile or warmth from this staff member initially, leaving me with a poor first impression and slight regret about choosing this hotel. That said, I felt reassured by other staff members' smiles and attentive service within the facility afterward. Since it was a multiple-night stay, when I returned by car after going out on the second day, they guided me closer to the entrance without confirming if it was for a multiple-night stay or not this time around. Other vehicles were also being directed near the entrance then—perhaps due to feedback from other guests? Parking lot staff are often guests' first point of contact with an accommodation; thus their demeanor can significantly influence overall impressions of a hotel as well as its reputation overall! A simple smile could have made all difference here improving perceptions positively instead! Aside from that experience though - thank you very much for enjoyable use of Sakura Lounge facilities too during our visit!

This was our first visit to Kusatsu Onsen, one of Japan's three famous Onsen areas alongside Arima and Gero. We stayed at Hotel Sakurai. The Onsen was wonderful, leaving a pleasant scent on the skin and even improving my hand dryness. My spouse and I, both in our 60s, enjoyed our stay. The hotel was clean and well-maintained, and the staff were very friendly. The meals were delicious, though the portions were a bit too large for us.

    Bullet Trip to Kusatsu

We decided to go the day before, and even last-minute reservations were possible. The hotel has a historic charm but has been renovated beautifully. There was one large bathtub and an open-air bath outside. While there aren't many options, you can enjoy a relaxing soak. The ReFa hairdryer was a nice touch. After the bath, you can also enjoy some ice cream.

A visit to the Onsen meant to relieve your fatigue, but...

I stayed on a weekday. From the parking guidance, it was confusing. I arrived earlier than the check-in time, but I was directed to park far away. Later arrivals were guided closer to the entrance... and without even asking if I had luggage, I was assigned a distant spot and had to carry heavy bags myself for the first time. Additionally, in the guest room, disposable slippers used by previous guests were left under the bed, and the sheets did not feel clean. It was a slightly disappointing Hotel.

    A luxurious accommodation.

The explanation by the young guide felt a bit harsh. The accommodation was luxurious and spacious, just as I had hoped to stay in for a long time. The room had a great view, making me want to stay again. The bath was clean, and I enjoyed the natural hot spring water. Personally, due to my food allergies, there were limited options as there were many fried dishes, which was disappointing. However, the steak was tender and delicious. I found that the large plates took up too much space on the tray; smaller ones would be preferable. It would also be nice to have more leafy vegetables like boiled greens added to the menu. The coffee service was decent enough. Since people come to Kusatsu expecting cloudy hot springs, I think better maintenance of grass around the open-air bath is necessary. Overall, it is a wonderful accommodation!

    Second Stay at Sakurai

Last time, I chose the two-meal Plan and ended up overeating, which made me miss the 8:00 YUMOMI show experience. So this time, I opted for the breakfast-only plus lounge access Plan, and it was perfect as I could enjoy the YUMOMI show without worrying about time. The Room was comfortable with a Simmons bed. Breakfast had a wide variety of delicious options. Thank you!

    Plenty of fun awaits!

Access to the area was only by car, driving through winding mountain roads to reach Kusatsu Onsen for the first time. For accommodation, I chose this hotel with its memorable commercial song and opted for the Club Lounge Plan. The result was a delightful stay with various creative events and a wonderful atmosphere in the Club Lounge. Upon arriving just after 12 PM, staff smoothly guided us with parking and provided clear explanations at the front desk along with maps for exploring the area. We were informed that we could check into our room after 2 PM, so we explored nearby attractions like Yubatake before checking in early. Afterward, we enjoyed a relaxing bath in the large public onsen followed by wine and beer paired with stylish appetizers at the Club Lounge. Dinner started at 5 PM as a buffet where we selected dishes such as Joshu Wagyu steak and freshly made Mont Blanc dessert—everything was delicious! At 8:15 PM, we watched an exciting Yumomi show and Sakura Taiko drum performance before heading out again to see Yubatake beautifully lit up at night—a whirlwind of activities in one day! The next morning's breakfast offered a wide variety of options, showcasing what only large-scale hotels can provide due to their many guests. Our assigned room on an upper floor facing northeast offered great views of the onsen town, Nishinokawara Park, and Kusatsu Ski Resort area. At night, we could see Kosenji Temple’s five-story pagoda illuminated below us. Although Yubatake wasn’t visible due to trees blocking it from view within temple grounds, it seemed possible during leafless seasons when branches are bare. Despite expecting Gunma Prefecture to be hot during summer days due to its elevation here in Kusatsu Onsen meant sunny weather without scorching heat; even walking uphill didn’t leave us drenched in sweat! Just like in "Kusatsu-bushi" folk song lyrics—Kusatsu truly is a wonderful place! Thank you for your hospitality!
