Hospitality
We stayed for one night during the Obon holidays with my daughter’s family. My son-in-law was visiting Kusatsu Onsen for the first time, and he really enjoyed the delicious meals and the yumomi experience at the Ryokan. All of the staff were kind, and even our 9-month-old grandchild was able to enjoy it, making it a wonderful trip. We would like to stay at Sakurai Ryokan again.

It was relaxing, but…
I stayed one night on the breakfast-included Plan. Even though I made the Reservation two days in advance, I was able to use a spacious Japanese-style room. I took the bus to Yubatake, also for dinner. I ate around Yubatake and then came back. At check-in, I was told the futon would be laid out after 7:00 p.m., but it wasn’t. I called and had them set it up, but watching them, it seemed like a lot of dust was flying around. Honestly, I didn’t want to see that… For the bath, I chose the separate bath option. There were few people, there were massage chairs and drinks as well, so I’m glad I paid extra. Breakfast was buffet-style. They promoted their French toast, but it was just average. At checkout, there wasn’t even an apology… I feel that one word could have changed my impression a lot.

Wonderful Hotel
This was my first time staying at Hotel Sakurai. We stayed as a group of three, and the Room was spacious and clean. The bath area was also spotless, with a clean changing room and an Onsen. The housekeeping staff’s attention to detail was outstanding. Breakfast offered a wide variety of options and was delicious—easily one of the best among the Hotels I have stayed at. The front desk staff greeted us warmly, making our stay very pleasant. I will definitely stay here again when I visit Kusatsu.

Kusatsu is Sakurai.
I visit Kusatsu Onsen every year, and Sakurai Hotel is the best. First of all, the hot spring water is excellent. It also seems to have been renovated, and both the Room and the changing area were very clean. The hair dryer was the latest ReFa model. The food was delicious as well—especially breakfast, which left me completely full. The grilled salmon was great. I’d like to come again next year.

An open-air bath would be great.
This was my first stay. I chose Hotel Sakurai because I love large public baths. When I went in, I was surprised at how spacious it was. And when I headed to the open-air bath, the scent of sulfur made me feel like I had truly come to an Onsen. It was amazing—please be sure to experience it for yourself.

Japanese Ryokan Serenity
It was our first time back in Kusatsu Onsen in a while, and my husband was really looking forward to staying at this Japanese Ryokan. From the welcome to being shown to our Room, the guidance was very courteous. We requested a renovated twin Room; aside from it being a bit too cold for me, it was spacious and easy to use. As expected of Kusatsu Onsen, with its abundant hot water and gentle quality, the large public bath was impressive. It was a little disappointing that the men’s and women’s baths were not switched, but we bathed three times and were very satisfied. The buffet meals also had plenty of variety and were enjoyable. The fruit was especially delicious. We would love to visit again if we have the opportunity.

Large Public Bath
I always looked forward to using the open-air bath in the large public bath. However, I was disappointed because the milky-white water in the open-air bath had changed to an almost colorless and odorless spring quality. The limited 20-group baths had the same spring quality as the large public bath, but perhaps due to the marble, it was a type I liked. Still, without the sulfur smell and milky-white water, I will look for another Ryokan.

Thank you for your support.
Although the Onsen and Facility were excellent, I felt that staff hospitality and the bus driver’s attentiveness were not well trained. I also felt there was limited knowledge about the Ryokan and nearby sightseeing spots. I believe staff training is the most important.

Relax again in the Sakura Lounge.
Because we enjoyed the hospitality at the Sakura Lounge on our previous stay, we made a Reservation again for the same room: [Club Lounge Access] Honkakuden Comfort Japanese-Western Room (Japanese-Western style), with dinner and breakfast included. The meals were buffet-style, with a wide variety of dishes that tasted great, so we were very satisfied. At the club lounge, we also enjoyed delicious wine, local beer, sake, tasty snacks, and fresh juice. It was available until before dinner, allowing us to relax and unwind at our own pace. We would definitely like to stay again.

A Crisis Turned into the Best Memory! Heartwarming Service on Our First Girls’ Trip with My Daughter and Granddaughter
I stayed here for my first girls’ trip with my two daughters and my grandchild. Unfortunately, it coincided with a typhoon, and the train we had booked was canceled, so it was one mishap after another even before we arrived. Even our shoes were soaked through, but the front desk staff kindly took care of them—and they were completely dry by morning! When we missed the Shuttle Service to Yubatake, they also arranged a ride for us on short notice. Even though this is such a large Hotel, our whole family was truly impressed by the warm, attentive service that anticipated what we needed. The meals were another highlight: both breakfast and dinner buffets offered an incredible variety of high-quality, delicious dishes. The “Joshu Beef Rib Steak” from the summer fair was especially outstanding and made us feel like we were enjoying an early taste of summer in true luxury. The Onsen was also wonderful—we could take our time enjoying two different types of excellent spring waters, and all our everyday fatigue melted away. It may have started with trouble, but thanks to everyone at the Hotel for their amazing hospitality, it became the best first girls’ trip. We will definitely be back. Thank you very much!

Delighted
At large Ryokan, meals are often served cold and the buffet is frequently disappointing, but I was extremely satisfied at Sakurai. A few ingredients that other Ryokan typically offer were missing, which was a bit disappointing, but the all-you-can-eat freshly grilled Joshu beef ribeye was truly impressive. The Onsen was also a sulfur spring, yet the water felt gentle and very relaxing. I had avoided staying here due to my own bias until now, but I plan to return. What stood out most was how thoroughly all staff consistently greeted guests, which made me feel genuinely refreshed and uplifted. It was a wonderful holiday.

Family Trip with Your Grandchild
We stayed in a Room on the 14th floor. The weather was great, and the location was outstanding. At the Sakura Lounge, we enjoyed unlimited local sake, local beer, wine, whiskey, and more. The food selection was also fairly good, so we were very satisfied. Our grandchild mostly ate chocolate, though... The dinner buffet felt like it had a slightly limited variety. The Onsen was truly Kusatsu-quality and left us refreshed. For a little extra luxury, we recommend upgrading to a higher-grade Room with access to the Sakura Lounge.

The bath is so spacious it feels like a pool.
I’d seen some Reviews saying the Accommodation felt old, so I was a bit concerned, but while the building itself may be older, it was very clean. Not only the visible areas, but even the places you don’t normally see were well maintained—I really felt how thorough the cleaning and upkeep were. The bath is about the size of a 25-meter pool. I think around 100 people could relax in the tub comfortably. There were also about 50 washing stations, so even during busy seasons it probably won’t feel too crowded. It was also nice that there was facial cleanser available in the men’s washing area. More than anything, what I loved most was that “bath towels are provided in the changing room.” There’s no need to bring towels from your Room, and you can use a fresh towel every time—such a great touch for cleanliness. This was my first time staying at an Accommodation that does this, and it made me feel they truly understand guests who want to enjoy the Onsen multiple times. Meals are buffet-style, and I think there were around 200 items at dinner. I thought, “I’m going to try everything!”—but I couldn’t. Since most dishes are already prepared and set out, it’s not like everything is served piping hot right after being cooked, but overall satisfaction was still 100/100. There were lots of desserts and even ice cream. I’m still disappointed I was too full to have any. Breakfast had fewer options than dinner, but I still think there were around 150 items. They also had things you don’t often see elsewhere like French toast and apple pie, so this was another 100/100 for me. Again though—I regret eating too much at dinner and not being able to try everything at breakfast either. I wasn’t hungry at all until night (and didn’t really have an appetite even then), so I also regret not being able to eat anything while sightseeing. The Room we stayed in had two Western-style single beds and it was clean. There wasn’t a bath—only a shower—in a typical unit-bath style space (no bathtub). If you’re going to bathe in your Room anyway, you might as well go to the Onsen instead, so this didn’t bother me. I did take a quick shower before bed and it was perfectly fine. From 8:00 PM there’s a yumomi performance and Japanese taiko drum show held near the dining area. I didn’t watch yumomi, but the taiko performance was incredible—honestly my favorite part of visiting Kusatsu. To be honest, I think you’d be happiest coming to Hotel Sakurai mainly for this taiko show—and treating Kusatsu sightseeing as an added bonus. There’s more I could say, but overall: “Absolutely amazing!”

Family trip (Reservation for a Japanese-style room with an adjoining room in the Main Guest Hall).
We expected heavy traffic getting to Kusatsu during Golden Week. We left around 8:00 a.m., took breaks and did some sightseeing, and arrived around 2:00 p.m. Since check-in was at 3:00 p.m., we planned to walk around for about an hour, but we were told we could check in right away. This was a huge help since we were traveling with my grandmother and our 4-month-old baby. The front desk staff were extremely polite, and it immediately felt like we had chosen a great Ryokan. They greeted us with smiles the entire time—honestly impressive (I don’t have that kind of skill). There was a short wait before going to our Room, so we took a drink break in the lounge. After one drink helped us recover from the drive, a staff member called us and guided us to the Room. It seems we were upgraded—probably to an “assigned guest room / Shinkyakuden Room.” The Room was very spacious and clean, and having two toilets was convenient. We used the in-room bath for the baby, but only lukewarm water (around 30°C) came out, which was the only thing that concerned us (maybe there’s a trick?). Dinner was delicious overall, especially the sushi. The white fish had great richness, and I ate plenty of it. The tuna and curry were also excellent. We considered bringing a stroller for meals, but they had something like a reclining baby chair where our baby could sleep—this quietly made things much easier. Some items had minor stains depending on what you get, so if that bothers you, it might be good to bring something to place underneath. The Onsen goes without saying (it’s Kusatsu). The shop was open until 9:00 p.m., but since it was dinner → event (8:15 p.m.), I wished it stayed open until around 9:30 p.m., so I could have bought beer after bathing. There is a 7-Eleven at the intersection right outside after leaving the Hotel. There wasn’t a baby crib, so we just let the baby sleep on futons. Breakfast starts at 7:00 a.m. We enjoyed one last Onsen soak before checking out and were able to relieve our everyday fatigue. The massage chair was great. Access by car is excellent, and Yubatake is within walking distance—though on the way back there are some fairly steep slopes. If we visit Kusatsu again as a family, I think we’ll definitely return here. Thank you very much.

A Kind Hotel
Two of us stayed on the 11th floor for a Multiple Night Stay of two nights. The Shuttle Service, front desk, shop, lounge, dining staff, and housekeeping—every member of the staff—were kind and courteous, which was wonderful. The Room was well maintained, clean, and spacious enough. We were moved to see Mt. Asama with its rising plume of smoke. The kaiseki cuisine had gentle seasoning and was truly delicious. The local craft beer and sake were also excellent. The Sakura Lounge had a wide selection and was very relaxing—we were very satisfied. I imagine it’s difficult to maintain a large Hotel, but I was impressed that nothing felt cheaped out on, including the amenities and fixtures. A Hotel I can recommend to friends as well. Please keep up the great work!

It was a trip we were completely satisfied with in every way!
I finally had the pleasure of staying at your Accommodation for the first time, something I had long dreamed of. It was even more wonderful than I imagined, and I would love to stay again when I visit Kusatsu Onsen. I was deeply impressed by the warm hospitality of all your staff, and this stay truly reaffirmed the “five-star” quality of your Accommodation. In particular, the water quality in the open-air bath was the best I have ever experienced in my life!

It was great!
The Facility was clean, the service was excellent, and we were able to relax very comfortably. Although it is a bit far from Yubatake, there is a shuttle service, and it makes for a pleasant walk. The hot spring water quality was great and helped relieve our fatigue.

Unfortunately.
Overall, it met expectations, but there were two disappointing points. First, when we arrived at the Accommodation and were shown to our Room, there was no explanation of the evacuation route. In case of an emergency, we wouldn’t know where the emergency exits or routes are, so I would have liked this explained first. Second, the toilet was small and not very comfortable. I would have preferred a bit more space. Aside from that, I thought the meals and events were excellent.

We had a relaxing Multiple Night Stay.
We were very satisfied with this Accommodation overall, including the spacious bathtub, the souvenir shop, and the guest room. Thank you for replenishing the amenities as well. If our schedules allow, we would like to stay here again for consecutive nights with our grandchildren.

Kusatsu is wonderful.
I visited Kusatsu Onsen again after several years, staying at a different Accommodation. While some things had changed—like the Yubatake area stroll—it was still a relaxing and soothing time. The Onsen warmed me through to the core and made me feel rejuvenated, which made me very happy, and Matsumura manju was delicious as ever. The only disappointment was the view from the Room. I hope I can find another wonderful Accommodation next time!

This was our first r...
This was our first return visit since coming with our family eight years ago. Last time, we were very satisfied with both the Onsen and the food, so we came again with high expectations. The Hotel now has a special lounge where wine, beer, and other drinks are free, along with unlimited hors d’oeuvres. Since it was before dinner, we only had drinks, but it was a calm and relaxing space. Both dinner and breakfast tasted just as good as we expected, and we were completely satisfied again this time.

Celebrating a 77th Birthday
We stayed as a group of eight (including two children) to celebrate Grandpa’s 77th birthday and milestone. With everyone in different age groups, we could relax and enjoy the baths at our own pace. The location is excellent—close to Yubatake—so we took a leisurely evening walk with the kids. Dinner on the first night was kaiseki, and every dish was delicious. The kids were especially happy with the buffet on the second day.

A Wonderful Time
From the moment we stepped inside, we were impressed by the open, high-ceilinged lobby, and we were also surprised by the size of the large public bath. We also appreciated the complimentary free-flow welcome drinks. The yumo-mi and taiko drum show held in the evening was very enjoyable as well.

Hotel Sakurai—once again, completely satisfied this year.
It has already been 6 or 7 years since my mother and I began taking our mother-and-child trips to Kusatsu Onsen. We have tried other Accommodation along the way, but Hotel Sakurai is by far the best. For the past few years, we have stayed here every year. My mother is getting older and often feels reluctant to go out, but she always wants to visit Hotel Sakurai each year. We will be back again next year as well.\nThank you in advance.

I won’t be coming again.
We took a three-generation family trip over the February long weekend. We stayed two nights in a Comfort Japanese-Western Room. For six people, the stay alone cost just under JPY 600,000 for two nights, so our expectations were high—but once we arrived, it felt like a large, mass-market Ryokan that didn’t justify the price. The worst part was dinner on the first night. It was described as kaiseki, but we were shown to a large banquet-style hall where a group of 20+ guests was having a lively party. That in itself I could accept, but the real issue was the service. Each person had an individual hot pot (duck hot pot), but my mother doesn’t eat duck. When she left it untouched, different attendants kept coming over and telling her to “please put the duck in quickly.” Each time we explained that she couldn’t eat duck, they pushed back quite forcefully with comments like “then just eat the vegetables” or “someone else can eat it.” They said the broth was made from duck stock as well, so she couldn’t have it at all—and I lost count of how many times we had to explain this. In the end, one attendant even made an unpleasant face and said, “What? You can’t eat duck?” There was no place to note allergies at Reservation, and we weren’t asked at check-in either. We didn’t really have an opportunity to mention it ourselves—so I accepted that part—but their attitude and handling of the situation were simply unacceptable. The service was extremely unpleasant. There is also a Sakura Lounge available only to guests staying in certain Rooms. You can enjoy alcohol and snacks there, but it’s only open until 19:30. The baths are clean; however, some foreign tour groups entered after only rinsing briefly with the shower or even put towels into the tub. It was uncomfortable enough that we left right away. I think they should clearly explain proper bathing etiquette. If you view this as an old-fashioned large-scale Ryokan for mass tourism, you may be able to enjoy it for what it is. But for us it was a very expensive stay—and since we’ve made Reservations through IKYU many times before, we expected Facilities and service at a similar level. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this place at all.
