    Perfect Accommodation

    I visited for the first time in seven years, and the Facilities and services had been upgraded even further. They go above and beyond to maximize guest satisfaction. At a price in the high 30,000-yen range, I don’t think there is any Accommodation that offers this much. Overall, I believe this Accommodation is among the very best in terms of total balance.

    Barrier-Free Room in Name Only

    I made a Reservation because I was told there was a barrier-free Room with an open-air bath, but it was a complete disappointment. First, there is a step from the Room to the bath area, so I couldn’t access it directly. You have to enter from the adjacent shower room, but it is too narrow for a caregiver to assist. Also, in the shower room, both the shower and faucet are positioned very low, and even after pressing once, the water stops after about five seconds. As a result, even an able-bodied person could not properly take a shower. In contrast, the showers in the public bath continue running once turned on. Because of this, I couldn’t use the open-air bath in the Room either. Even though I came for the Onsen, I couldn’t even take a shower, which made this trip extremely disappointing. The only positive point was that dinner was very delicious.

    Satisfied with everything

    Although this Accommodation is located along a major road, once you step onto the grounds you won’t notice it at all, and there is a lovely garden. A stroll is highly recommended. Various services, including the lounge, are thoughtfully arranged, and we really enjoyed our time inside the Accommodation. All staff were kind and pleasant; the meals were delicious; and not only the in-room open-air bath but also the large public bath was excellent. There were quite a few guests from Europe/Western countries and Asia as well, but everyone spent their time quietly. This Accommodation far exceeded our expectations.

    The hospitality was ...

    The hospitality was excellent! All the staff at the Ryokan were attentive to every detail, making our stay very enjoyable. The bacon we grilled and ate on the outdoor terrace was delicious, and all the meals were fantastic. During dinner, the staff member in charge shared many interesting stories about Otaru, which made it even more enjoyable! The room was much cleaner and more spacious than in the photos, and we were extremely satisfied. Although there was snow on the ground this time, it wasn't snowing during our stay. We would love to visit again to enjoy Onsen while it's snowing!

    That's unfortunate.

    We stayed on the second day of our trip to Hokkaido. The room had an open-air bath, but when I tried to use it before 6 a.m., only a trickle of water came out, and the tub was only half full. After contacting the front desk, the water flow increased after some time, so it seemed that the water supply was reduced during the night. I was looking forward to enjoying the open-air bath in my room, so it was disappointing. At check-out, there were no words from the staff; I ended up expressing my disappointment myself, which they seemed to notice then. It was supposed to be a memorable trip, but we returned home with somewhat mixed feelings. The meals were delicious; however, overall it was truly disappointing.

    Hospitality Accommodation

    We stayed for one night from November 11th with a family of five. Since opportunities to travel with my parents, both over 80 years old, are limited, we wanted to choose a "wonderful and comfortable ryokan" and decided to try this place based on reviews. The facility is almost entirely barrier-free, allowing my elderly parents to use wheelchairs comfortably and safely. Above all, the hospitality of the staff was exceptional. They not only noticed things but also took proactive approaches rather than just observing, which seemed to reflect the brand strength of Kourakuen. It’s rare for every staff member we interacted with to be so outstanding—this truly represents their brand. The meals were beautifully presented and delicious; even my mother, who usually eats very little, finished her meal completely. The complimentary massage at the spa was also excellent. Our entire family rated our stay as excellent, and my elderly parents expressed their desire to live long enough to visit again. This is an accommodation we would love to visit again during flower season for its exceptional hospitality. We sincerely thank all the staff who made our stay so special!

    Autumn Spectacle

    We chose this accommodation based on the high review ratings and were not disappointed. The staff's hospitality and high-level service made for a truly satisfying trip. For Otaru sightseeing, we walked from Otaru Station and used a taxi waiting near the Music Box Museum, which cost 2,800 yen. The lounge offers beverages such as coffee and beer. As this is a premium accommodation, the guests were all refined, allowing us to enjoy a quiet and peaceful time without crowds. Events like the bonfire café and relaxation lounge were also well-organized. There are stairs leading to the large public bath, which might be challenging for those with mobility issues. Meals featured excellent presentation and seasonal flavors served in beautiful dishes; while portions were small, they suited me perfectly. I expected more seafood unique to Otaru but found it was not particularly emphasized in the menu.

    A wonderful accommodation.

    I visited after 5-6 years and was delighted with the new sauna, which wasn’t available last time. The bite-sized beer was incredibly delicious. The meals featured autumnal ingredients and beautiful presentation, offering a feast for both the eyes and palate—truly satisfying. The only regret was that when I went to the lounge after 9 PM, I couldn’t enjoy beer or sparkling wine. If the lounge is open until 10 PM, it would have been nice if all drinks were available until then.

    I was deeply moved.

    I discovered Otaru Kourakuen while searching for an onsen to stay at during my trip to Otaru. It truly lived up to its top review ratings as a wonderful accommodation. Passing through the gate, I was guided by cherry blossom trees into another world. Everything about the stay was incredibly comfortable. In particular, I felt genuine hospitality from the staff's smiles and thoughtful gestures. Next time, I plan to visit not for sightseeing in Otaru but to fully enjoy Otaru Kourakuen itself.

    A warm accommodation filled with hospitality

    We stayed for 1 night and 2 days as a couple. The building is not new, but it is well-maintained and clean. There were free drinks, snacks, and sweets available in the lobby, lounge areas, and baths. You could even roast marshmallows or bacon by the fireplace, giving an all-inclusive feel! Dinner was served in the Room, allowing us to enjoy it at our own pace without worrying about others. The presentation was beautiful, and the food was delicious. The bath facilities included two baths with alternating schedules for men and women; the water temperature was just right and very relaxing. Above all else, the staff's warm smiles and kind gestures during greetings made us feel truly welcomed. It was our first trip to Hokkaido, and we created wonderful memories here. Thank you so much!

    Enjoy the view of the beautiful garden.

    First, I was impressed by the warm hospitality of the staff. The food was delicious, with just the right portions to satisfy. The quality of the hot spring water in both the private open-air bath and large public bath was excellent, and everything was clean and comfortable. Even though there were guests with small children, the room seemed soundproofed as it was very quiet. This is an accommodation I would love to visit again.

    I had a very comfort...

    I had a very comfortable stay. The room was slightly more compact than I had imagined, but it was clean and cozy. The meals were made with fresh ingredients, which I appreciated, though a bit more creativity or uniqueness in the seasoning could enhance the experience further. The Onsen attached to the room felt slightly lukewarm (adjustments were possible). Overall, it was a highly satisfying stay, and I would love to visit again.

    Value beyond the price

    We stayed as a group of five friends. Although we had checked the website beforehand, the actual experience exceeded our expectations with its exceptional hospitality and comfortable atmosphere. The staff provided detailed explanations, perfectly timed service, and an artistic and delicious dinner. Afterward, we relaxed at the café in the garden. The bath and sauna were spacious and clean, and a message encouraging even post-surgery guests to relax in bathing attire was heartwarming. In the evening, we enjoyed a variety of drinks offered in a cozy lounge with great ambiance. The next morning, we savored delicious Hokkaido ingredients while enjoying beautiful scenery. Despite being a lively group, the staff watched over us with warm smiles for which we are truly grateful.

    20 years ago, I was brought here by my boss when I was working, and I remember being deeply impressed by the dinner at that time. This time, I made a reservation and brought my mother. Although it wasn't as moving as back then, I was truly touched by the hospitality of the staff.     It was a wonderful accommodation experience.

    During our trip, my wife sprained her left ankle. We had to visit an orthopedic clinic urgently, where she underwent an X-ray and was prescribed a support band, painkillers, and cooling patches. Despite limping, we managed to complete our trip. At check-in, noticing her condition, the staff promptly replaced the table and chairs in our Room with higher ones. Thanks to this thoughtful adjustment, we were able to enjoy dinner comfortably. Thank you for your flexible response and excellent service! The staff's hospitality was outstanding.

    Excellent customer service

    We stayed at the accommodation during our summer vacation as a family of three, including my husband and our high school-aged son. From the car drop-off to the warm welcome, room guidance, and meal preparations, we were truly comforted by the staff's smiles and gentle demeanor. The meals were delicious; however, they seemed slightly insufficient for our son, who enjoyed a dessert parfait afterward. The spacious garden was perfect for a stroll. One minor downside was that from the earthen floor of our maisonette room and in front of the private open-air bath in the room, there was an overgrowth of grass which was disappointing. Being close to Otaru, we would love to visit again when traveling to Hokkaido!

    I stayed at this accommodation to celebrate my daughter's birthday. Having experienced many hotels and ryokans before, none have ever moved me as deeply as this place. The first thing that impressed me was the spatial design. The expansive 8,000-tsubo property is utilized luxuriously, with buildings blending seamlessly into nature. Every visit to the room, open-air bath, restaurant, or walking paths revealed a new and breathtaking view. Especially memorable was the scenery from the sauna relaxation area in "Mori no Yuya," which calmed my heart as if time had stopped. Next was the cuisine. Not only were allergies and children's needs carefully considered, but every dish was crafted to perfection with an anticipation for what would come next and impeccable timing of service. The breakfast stood out in particular; its gentle flavors eased away travel fatigue and provided a comforting start to the day. Above all else, what truly sets this accommodation apart is the thoughtfulness of its staff. I had read reviews praising their exceptional hospitality beforehand and arrived with high expectations—but even those were far exceeded during our stay. Their service struck a perfect balance: discreet yet always present when needed—accompanied by warm smiles throughout our visit. Additionally, thoughtful touches like towels before using the sauna, complimentary drinks at events around a courtyard bonfire (including alcohol), and other delightful surprises added charm to every moment. While our initial purpose for visiting was sightseeing in Otaru, next time we plan to make staying at "Otaru Kourakuen" itself the main reason for our trip.     The worst accommodation experience.

    Why does this accommodation have such high ratings? Is it just the lively welcome and farewell that deceive guests? If you can return home feeling good, then that's fine. I booked a room (Japanese-Western style) expecting an open-air bath with a garden view, but it was completely different from the image. When I requested a change, they promptly accommodated me with a Japanese-style room. So far, so good. However, this new room turned out to be problematic. Within 30 minutes of checking in, there were loud thumping noises from the floor above. Unable to bear it, I thought of using the open-air bath but noticed from the shower area that I could clearly see into the window of an upper diagonal room. If I could see them, they could see me too—especially in the shower area where visibility seemed unavoidable. Giving up on bathing and returning to my room didn’t help as the noise continued relentlessly. I reported this to reception and was told that families with children were staying upstairs and such noise was anticipated; hence this particular room had been kept vacant initially (though later denied by another staff member claiming to be "the young master"). Why assign us this room without prior explanation? Had we known beforehand about potential issues like these noises or privacy concerns regarding baths—we wouldn’t have switched rooms unnecessarily! Eventually after complaints escalated toward management-level intervention finally things quietened down somewhat upstairs yet still left unresolved feelings lingering throughout stay overall experience dampened significantly already meanwhile temporary measures involving blue tarps covering exposed areas around outdoor-bathroom facilities failed providing adequate privacy/security assurances either ruining scenic views gardens entirely altogether instead leaving guests uneasy uncomfortable unsettled further exacerbating frustrations disappointments alike...     Review Satisfaction

    The staff's response (language, smiles, etc.) made me strongly feel that they are well-trained. However, I also believe that such exceptional service cannot be achieved through training alone, which suggests that each staff member is inherently of high quality. Although there were some accidents during my stay, the thorough risk management and response demonstrated by the facility undoubtedly contribute to its high reputation among guests.     An excellent accommodation in every aspect

    We stayed for one night with my elderly grandfather. From the warm and attentive welcome, we were deeply impressed by the hospitality. Throughout our stay, we enjoyed almost all-inclusive services such as the lounge offerings and the quality of both dinner and breakfast. Not only was there a variety of services, but every staff member was kind and courteous, leaving us truly moved. I thought this might be my grandfather's last trip and wanted it to be memorable—choosing this accommodation turned out to be an excellent decision. I strongly wish to use this ryokan for my own life events in the future as well.

Personally, as someone who loves flowers, I found it incredibly luxurious to be able to cut flowers from the garden and decorate the Room with them.     Disappointing

    The facility has an old-fashioned feel, which is understandable, but there are areas with a strange smell, reminiscent of feet, that gave a bad impression from the start. The provided hand towels were dry and stiff. The room only had water in a pot; it lacked a sense of cleanliness. Considering the high accommodation fee of over 30,000 yen per person, bottled water should be provided instead. The complimentary snacks were generic cookies like Coconut ○Blé and Mr. ○Toh's cookies. Since this is Otaru, it would be nice to offer local specialty sweets as a thoughtful touch. In the lounge, they served not beer but low-malt beer substitutes; for an indulgent trip like this one, at least real beer should be offered. As for the meals—they were extremely disappointing. It was obvious that some dishes had been prepared in advance and left out too long as parts were dried out. Even the main dish was cold meat when served. The seasoning was subpar and left much to be desired overall; unfortunately, I could barely eat due to how unappetizing it was. For over 30,000 yen per person? Unacceptable. This trip was meant to celebrate my father's birthday but turned into quite a disappointing experience instead. While I did feel some thoughtfulness from the staff members' service efforts—meals significantly impact satisfaction levels during such stays—and thus I cannot help feeling let down overall by this aspect especially!

    Kourakuen, a place we've been visiting for years. We recently stayed again to celebrate our 9-year-old son's birthday.     Last summer, my husband and I stayed at this accommodation and had a wonderful experience, so this year we returned for a special 60th birthday trip with our children and grandchildren. The food was as delicious as ever, and the hospitality and service were excellent. Thank you for kindly inviting our grandchild to feed the koi fish; they looked very happy. Two days after check-out, I realized I had left something in the closet, and you kindly sent it back via cash-on-delivery—thank you for your effort. However, if possible, it would have been helpful to receive a phone call about it since we were searching in a hurry. Also, while I understand that baby shampoo may not be in high demand, many accommodations do provide it. It would have been nice if it was available here too; though we brought our own so there was no issue. Thank you very much for your hospitality. We hope to visit again someday!
