Surprisingly disappointing.

I chose the Marriott for a relaxing vacation, but perhaps my timing was not ideal—unlike what I had imagined, it felt very much like a family-oriented Hotel. It did not match my expectations. Also, the lounge felt like a cafeteria, and used dishes were left uncleared for long periods, so I did not use it even once (I think this really needs to be addressed). I ate at the Hotel both in the morning and in the evening, but there was too much variation in staff skill levels, and drinks ordered separately took far too long to be served. I understand everyone is doing their best, but I think you should consider adding more staff or taking other measures. The open-air bath in the Room was comfortable, but the amenities felt cheap. It made me feel that the Marriott brand value had dropped. Was that Hotel part of Laforet? Even so, I enjoyed my stay. Thank you very much.

We were able to relax with our dog. It was a shame there was no open-air bath, and the beef at dinner was tough. We could only eat it with salt, so it left our mouth tasting quite salty.

It was my first time staying here.

We stayed in a Superior Twin Room with an Onsen, and it was clean, spacious enough for two people, and very comfortable. The bath in the Room was excellent. However, the large public bath did not have an open-air bath or a sauna, and it was not very spacious, which felt disappointing considering the size of the Hotel. Also, the changing room was shared between the large public bath and the Onsen pool. Unfortunately, Laforet’s men’s large public bath was also closed during our stay. It didn’t feel very resort-like overall, but since we were able to use the lounge this time, it was fairly good on balance. We would consider staying again.

    Please check the reviews.

I saw the Reviews and noticed the rating wasn’t very high, so I stayed without high expectations. The check-in explanation was mostly fine, but there was no explanation about breakfast vouchers or free Wi‑Fi; I understood by reading a flyer, though a verbal explanation would have been helpful.
The lounge was fairly average. There weren’t many drink options (soft drinks, etc.), and there were almost no snacks to nibble on. The refrigerator with the drinks had a non-transparent door so you couldn’t see what was inside. I’ve used lounges at many Hotels, so this was a bit disappointing.
The Room had an open-air bath, but the layout to reach the shower room wasn’t convenient, and the amenities felt surprisingly minimal. I’ve stayed at eco-friendly Hotels many times, but there should be a limit. The meals and staff service were fine, and I had a comfortable stay.
There were many guests with children, but once inside the Room it was quiet—I couldn’t hear noise or voices—so that was nice.

We stayed at this dog-friendly property.

I fully understand that this is not a dog-first property. What I felt was a bit unfortunate was that the Room floor was very slippery, and I worried it could cause joint injuries. The dog run is compact, but it has a slight slope, and my dog seemed happy running around. There is also an area to wash paws, and simple towels are provided; however, for water to use inside the dog run (such as bottled water) and poop bags, owners need to bring their own, so you can’t go empty-handed from the Room. The Room feels luxurious, but only the bathroom… I’m not sure what happened there. All of the front desk staff were excellent—very attentive and impressive.

    Slow customer service response

The check-in process was very slow, and we had to wait for 30-40 minutes. This was the first time we experienced such a long wait. The meals also took a long time to arrive. The bath was small and disappointing. The private open-air bath in the room was decent.

Due to the busy season, cleaning is average.

I visited during the New Year season in January. The Room had dust accumulating on the walls, and the gym at Laforet was covered in so much dust that it seemed like it hadn't been cleaned for ages. When I picked up a mop to clean, even the mop was full of dust. The large public bath also seemed unclean, with hair everywhere and no replenishment of towels provided. Three washing areas were marked as "under disinfection" and remained unusable throughout my stay. Some parts of the Room floor felt slightly slanted, making it difficult to walk comfortably. The bed was comfortable to sleep on, but there was a lot of dust under it. As for food, the buffet cakes were delicious; however, there was only sea bream sashimi available. The breakfast buffet was far better than dinner overall. Although the shop had limited items available, vending machines were well-stocked. The view of Mount Fuji was beautiful!

The layout of the Room allows the entire space to be visible when the door is opened, making it fully exposed from the hallway. A privacy door would have been appreciated. This time, we stayed in a Room with an open-air bath, but we were surprised by the inconvenient access from the shower booth near the entrance to the open-air bath on the balcony (cutting through inside of the Room). As for activities, facilities like a gymnasium, zipline, and tennis court were excellent.

Travel with Your Beloved Dog (2)

Stayed for one night with my beloved dog on a December weekend. This was my second visit, and this time I stayed in a Japanese-Western Room. The spaciousness of the room is great, and the raised tatami area separating the Japanese and Western styles is a nice touch. The lounge food was even more delicious than last time. The public bath, which was lukewarm before, was slightly hotter this time, which suited me perfectly. At the dog run, we had fun playing with other dogs as well. The customer service remains excellent, and both the breakfast buffet and made-to-order omelets were delightful again this time. My dog seemed to enjoy it too—completely satisfied! I’ll likely visit again.

    Dog-friendly room with Onsen requested

The public Onsen is somewhat underwhelming, so it would be great if the dog-friendly rooms also had private Onsen facilities (though this might not be structurally feasible). The staff service, amenities, and restaurant are impeccable. As for the lounge, compared to other "Marriott" properties, its offerings are quite disappointing—but I don't expect much, so that's fine. What’s puzzling is why the lounge area and seating capacity are reduced to half on crowded weekends compared to quieter weekdays. Shouldn't it be the opposite? (Doubling the seating and space on busy weekends instead of weekdays.) Naturally, many guests were turned away due to full occupancy—could it possibly be intentional on the hotel's part? Some might interpret it that way...

The behavior of inbound group guests in the public bath is unacceptable.

The public bath is not very spacious (only one indoor bath, about seven washing stations with partitions, three of which were out of order, and another seven without partitions). My elderly mother’s first reaction to the Onsen was: "This is the worst Onsen experience I've ever had in my life!" When she visited the public bath at night, a large group of inbound tourists from overseas occupied the bathtub, washing stations, lockers, and sink areas with hair dryers. The noise echoed throughout the bathroom as they loudly conversed across distances between the tub and washing areas. It was impossible to relax. There were only 2-3 Japanese guests including my mother and one well-mannered Western guest who adhered to proper etiquette. However, all of them quickly left due to frustration over the chaos caused by this group. As a result, it became entirely dominated by these inbound tourists. Although this is a Marriott property (not Courtyard or lower-tier), it seems primarily catered toward large tour groups rather than high-quality individual travelers. To avoid such situations in shared spaces like breakfast or Onsen times—calculated based on their schedules—it becomes necessary for other guests like us to adjust our own plans accordingly. This imposes significant inconvenience on Japanese guests trying to enjoy their stay peacefully. Aside from this issue with certain guest behavior in shared facilities during peak times, everything else—including staff service quality, amenities provided onsite & dining options—was excellent overall! However even just one negative experience can overshadow an otherwise pleasant stay; therefore stricter standards regarding acceptable inbound clientele would greatly improve future stays here!

A Hotel that children will love.

We stayed at the accommodation to celebrate my son's 8th birthday. The staff showed great attention to detail regarding the birthday cake, asking when and where we would like it served—whether in the room or at the restaurant. They also accommodated our request for balloon decorations in the room, coordinating with an external balloon decoration company we hired. When we arrived, beautiful balloons were already set up in the room. Thanks to their thoughtful arrangements, my son and his siblings were overjoyed and had a wonderful time. Thank you so much. The large public bath where swimsuits are allowed was more spacious than expected, and our children had a blast swimming and playing together. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious. The venison steak was exceptionally tender with no gamey taste—one of the best we've ever had. The buffet offered a variety of tasty dishes that left both adults and children fully satisfied. This is such a wonderful hotel with exceptional hospitality that left a lasting impression on us. Choosing this place was absolutely the right decision. Thank you very much!

We had an enjoyable stay with our dog.

Many dogs and their owners were staying here. It was my first time in Shuzenji, but the location is a bit far from tourist spots. The Hotel's Onsen is close to the pool, which might cause some confusion. Both dinner and breakfast were satisfying. If you're expecting a typical Marriott experience, you might feel it's slightly different, but it's a great place to stay casually with your dog!

    Dog-Friendly Room

This is our fifth stay in the dog-friendly room, and our beloved pet always enjoys it. The walking trails of Marriott and Laforet are rich in nature, offering a refreshing experience with plenty of negative ions from the forest. Although we didn’t encounter any deer this time, there were many freshwater crabs that our dog happily chased around. The room has a slight tobacco smell but is clean and well-maintained. One consistent concern is the 30 cm gap between the top of the bathroom door and ceiling, which allows sounds to be heard clearly in the living area. Additionally, it would be great to have a leash hook or gate between the living area and entrance to prevent pets from running out.

We stayed with my 89-year-old mother, a tiny toy poodle, and three people plus one dog. The facility was clean, and the meals were very delicious. During meals, we left our dog in the car. It would be even better if there were a way to dine with pets.

    Always enjoy a pleasant stay.

As always, even when arriving a bit earlier than the check-in time, the check-in process is handled smoothly and pleasantly, making for a great start to the stay. Other staff members are also very welcoming. However, this time it was a bit disappointing that the water pressure in the Room's shower was too low to use comfortably.

The private open-air bath in the room was excellent.

Marriott, a world-renowned hotel chain, offers both luxury city hotels and high-end resort hotels. Marriott Shuzenji exudes the impression of a premium Onsen Resort, and I was very much looking forward to this stay. I stayed for two nights in a room with a private open-air bath. The room was spacious, well-equipped, impeccably clean, and the private open-air bath was extremely comfortable—absolutely flawless. It is definitely a room I would love to stay in again. However, in terms of service quality, it felt somewhat inconsistent—neither fully embodying the standards of a luxury city hotel nor those of an upscale resort hotel. The staff's level of service seemed to vary; some were clearly experienced professionals who had likely worked at top-tier city hotels and provided polished service. Unfortunately, others gave off an impression that their pride as staff at a prestigious hotel overshadowed genuine hospitality; while polite, their demeanor came across as overly formal. The front desk staff handling check-in left much to be desired as well. They asked trivial questions but failed to provide essential information about the Facility locations or operating hours unless prompted by me—a disappointing first impression during check-in compared to other top-tier hotels where necessary explanations are typically concise and proactive without requiring guest inquiries. As for its standing as an Onsen Resort Hotel compared with other high-end Onsen Hotels I've visited before: amenities such as towels or loungewear felt insufficiently tailored for an Onsen experience—leaving me with mixed impressions regarding attention-to-detail here too. Additionally—and perhaps more concerning given expectations from such establishments—the behavior observed among certain guests detracted from overall ambiance: notably foreign visitors casually walking around public spaces wearing yukata paired alongside slippers meant exclusively indoors dampened atmosphere significantly further still! Breakfast pricing seemed reasonable initially yet execution fell short when ordered egg dishes arrived mismatched against what had been requested alongside incorrect receipts accompanying them instead altogether disappointingly so likewise overall value-for-money balancing costs versus hard/soft aspects combined ultimately feels slightly underwhelming overall conclusion-wise accordingly!

I have stayed here multiple times.

I always enjoy staying in rooms with Onsen. The public bath is not very spacious and lacks a view or an open-air bath, so I prefer rooms with Onsen. This time, I felt compelled to comment because the strawberries at breakfast were incredibly unappetizing. They were the worst I've ever had in my 60+ years of life. It's hard to believe, especially in Izu, known for its delicious strawberries.

    Travel with Your Beloved Dog

I stayed for one night with my beloved dog. It was a very calm and lovely Hotel. The Room was a dog-friendly Japanese-Western style, and we chose in-room dining for our meals. The cleanliness was impeccable, making our stay very comfortable. Amenities were well-prepared and excellent. Choosing in-room dining turned out to be the perfect decision as we could enjoy our meal without worrying about others, allowing our dog to roam freely. Dinner was diverse with five types of desserts catering to various tastes, all deliciously prepared. The portions were so generous that I couldn’t finish everything despite my best efforts—truly satisfying! Breakfast was also delightful. The only downside might have been the bath facilities; I felt that having an open-air bath would have allowed for a more relaxing experience. Since I had my dog with me, visiting the Laforet public bath wasn’t an option. I hope there will be an open-air bath available someday!

We had a relaxing time as mother and daughter.

I have stayed here several times, and once again, I was very satisfied. I always visit with my mother, and since we love Onsen but are not fond of large public baths, the room with a private open-air bath was perfect for relaxing at our own pace. This time, we stayed for two nights and had a peaceful time surrounded by nature. When we arrived, it was drizzling lightly. Before parking in the lot, we stopped the car in front of the Hotel to unload our luggage. About four staff members ran out from inside to assist us, helping with our bags and holding umbrellas to keep them dry. Their thoughtful attention made us very happy. At the restaurant as well, all the staff were attentive and pleasant. They kindly spoke to us often and even served warm and delicious tea in the morning—thank you! Of course, both dinner and breakfast were incredibly delicious. The recommended cherry blossom cocktail was also delightful. I look forward to visiting again soon! Thank you very much!

Enjoy views of Mount Fuji and the mountains of Izu.

The reviews mentioned issues such as disappointing service, noisy children, cleanliness concerns with the room and large bath mats, and a lack of exclusivity in the lounge. However, during our stay, we did not experience any of these problems. **Service** The staff maintained a perfect balance of attentiveness without being intrusive, making our stay stress-free and comfortable. In particular, the person who seemed to be a manager at the lounge and restaurant impressed us with their efficient movements and exceptional hospitality. **Baths** Plenty of mats were provided in the large bath area as an improvement based on previous reviews. While the large bath is relatively small, we recommend booking a room with an open-air bath. The private open-air baths are spacious compared to room size and offer stunning views of Mt. Fuji. **For Families with Children** There were relatively many families during our stay; however, we never encountered any disturbances caused by children. **Meals** Some reviews mentioned having dinner in the lounge; however, it only offers light snacks that might feel insufficient for adults. Access to the lounge was limited to certain guests under specific conditions. The grilled dishes served at dinner matched their price point and were preferable over pre-prepared Japanese meals focused on presentation rather than taste. Breakfast becomes less crowded after 8 AM. Dishes are replenished regularly, ensuring freshness throughout service hours. Egg dishes are brought directly to your table upon order—it's best to place your order after bringing buffet items back so you can enjoy them while still warm. Considering this price range for Atami or Hakone: Rooms with open-air baths often face issues like proximity concerns with neighboring ryokans or distant public baths (if available). Here everything is conveniently located—rooms on 3rd floor; dining area on 2nd floor; baths on 1st floor—making movement hassle-free. Meals here focus primarily on Japanese cuisine but allow choices that avoid disappointment from farmed fish often used elsewhere. Tables are spaced apart for privacy while high ceilings add openness. Additionally—the ability to view Mt.Fuji from various spots including lobby/lounge/private-room-baths enhances overall satisfaction! Arriving early allows ample time enjoying facilities such as large/public/open-air/stone-sauna lounges—or taking shuttle buses towards Laforet attractions suitable especially when traveling alongside kids! Suggestion: Adding "In Use" signs onto stone sauna doors would provide extra reassurance!

Deluxe Twin Room with Onsen Open-Air Bath

We arrived more than an hour early due to concerns about heavy rain and snow, and despite being before the check-in time, we were allowed to enter the room and fully enjoy our stay. The Deluxe Twin Room with an open-air Onsen was comfortable, and the outdoor bath was at a perfect temperature, allowing us to relax while enjoying the fresh air. We would love to visit again if we have the chance.

    Traveling with Your Beloved Dog

In February, I stayed for one night with my beloved dog. The room is spacious enough even with a dog cage. The cleaning is thorough. It was nice to be able to spend time without shoes. The dog amenities are also well-equipped. The room is very dry, so it would be appreciated if a humidifier was standard. The dog run has a great location with a view of Mt. Fuji. The hotel staff provided service that exceeded our expectations and was very good. The lounge doesn't have a wide variety of dishes, but they were constantly replenished. Although we stayed without dinner, we were able to fill up with the lounge's food. Breakfast had a wide variety and was delicious. There were also descriptions using local ingredients, which whetted our appetite. Egg dishes are made to order and brought to each table. It's nice not to have to line up for omelets, which is common at breakfast buffets. The bath is spacious and has a sense of cleanliness. The water temperature was a bit lukewarm, which was a bit unsatisfactory for me as I like hotter water. I am very satisfied with the resort feel and being able to stay with my dog. I would like to use it again.

I was able to spend a relaxing time.

I arrived a little early, but my room was prepared immediately. The attentiveness of the staff was pleasant in every situation. The Onsen bath in the room was delightful, allowing me to relax without going to the large public bath. I was also pleased to use the lounge as a benefit of being a Diamond member. For dinner, I could choose the main dish, but perhaps because I wasn't very hungry, the buffet alone might have been enough. The breakfast buffet had a wide variety and was delicious. I would like to use it again.

    Relaxing

I decided to spend a relaxing one-night Onsen trip at Shuzenji Onsen. To enjoy the Onsen freely in a hotel rather than with Ryokan-style service, the Izu Marriott Hotel Shuzenji offers twin rooms with open-air baths, which is just right. (Other Marriotts too) There were various breakfast options, and I enjoyed them at leisure. As a Diamond member, I arrived early and was allowed to use the lounge, but there was no explanation, and no staff was present, so I wasn't sure how to use it. Another concern was that I intended to relax until the 11 a.m. checkout, but the cleaning staff for other rooms were talking loudly while working, which made it hard to relax. I hope they could clean a bit more quietly until checkout time. However, I like Marriott hotels, so I will use them again.

    It's wonderful.

You can relax in a wonderful space and also be active (pool, gym, sports center), making both elementary school children and adults very satisfied. The buffet offers many healthy menu options and is very delicious. This time, we stayed in a Room with an open-air bath, and it was extremely clean and excellent, so we will definitely choose a Room with an open-air bath next time as well. We will visit again.

    I used the property ...

I used the property for an anniversary, but it was a disappointing stay. Even though it was past the check-in time, I was told to wait in the lobby for about 20 minutes because the room was not ready yet. When I entered the room, although the cleaning was done, the entire room, especially the bedding, smelled musty. Since it was an anniversary visit, I tried not to mind this level of inconvenience. However, at the final checkout, there was a high charge from the hotel restaurant that I did not use, added to the room bill. After confirming the receipt and checking with the restaurant, the charge for the unused portion was eventually canceled, but I am left with distrust in the room billing system. In a restaurant that should not be used without a reservation, I was left wondering whether it was due to insufficient confirmation of the room number and guest name, or if the room number and name were leaked, as I left the hotel. The front desk staff did nothing wrong, and their response was not a problem at all. I even hesitated to write this review, but I hope for improvements so that no one else will have the same experience in the future.
