    Wasn't it an observation bath?

    The location offers a great view of Beppu Onsen town, but the outdoor bath had black glass for privacy, which blocked the view while soaking. Even though bathing clothes were provided, it was unclear why this was necessary. The teppanyaki dinner included luxurious items like abalone, lobster, and marbled steak; however, the Western-style sauce didn’t suit my taste. It would be nice to have more options to choose from. The abalone was pre-cut and stir-fried for quick serving but ended up being tough and lacked flavor. Serving it whole and cooked medium or rare might have been better. Additionally, I noticed that the portion sizes of ingredients served to neighboring guests (who appeared to be Asian tourists) were visibly smaller than ours—this difference was surprising and noticeable even to them. Recently, many hotels employ foreign staff members; while some struggled with Japanese or missed certain instructions we hoped for, their efforts are appreciated as they improve over time. The welcome and farewell gestures were well-done and left a positive impression. For breakfast, guests can choose between a Japanese set meal or Western-style dishes prepared in front of them on an iron plate (e.g., omelets or sausages). However, we were told meal choices must be made two days in advance—perhaps due to accommodation logistics? The Japanese breakfast came as a three-tiered tray with plenty of delicious dishes that even younger guests would find satisfying. As for our room in "Sora-kan" with an open-air bath attached—it was spacious enough for four people. Although we couldn’t fully enjoy the outdoor bath since we traveled as a group, having both indoor and outdoor baths available was convenient. A pleasant surprise awaited us: complimentary sparkling wine in the fridge! Overall there were both good points and minor issues during our stay; thank you for your hospitality! We may consider returning again someday!

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

    We chose this accommodation for its private open-air bath and the view of Beppu's steam-filled scenery. The staff's attentiveness and warm smiles were exceptional, and they answered our questions with great care. Knowing it was our 30th wedding anniversary trip, the staff kindly gave us a commemorative photo and a gift, making it a truly memorable journey. The meals were very delicious. We had teppanyaki breakfast for both mornings of our two-night stay, but the menu was exactly the same each day, which was slightly disappointing. It might be better to add some variety for guests on multiple night stays. The room, bath, amenities, and view were all outstanding. We would love to stay here again when visiting Beppu!

    A Satisfying Journey

    An annual trip with classmates. We splurged a little on the room and stayed in a detached accommodation with an open-air bath. Many foreign staff members were working, but they spoke excellent Japanese and provided service with warm smiles, which was very heartwarming. The meals were also highly satisfying. One small disappointment was that the futons prepared in the room were laid out separately—one set in one area and two sets in another part of the room, requiring us to walk between them as it was a spacious accommodation. When we asked if it could be arranged to have all futons laid out together in one area, we were told it would make the space feel cramped. However, since we wanted to chat until just before sleeping, we asked if it would be okay for us to move them ourselves, and they kindly allowed us to do so. It would have been nice if they had asked beforehand how we'd like them arranged or perhaps moved them during dinner time—it’s admittedly a bit of an unreasonable request on our part. Since everything else about our stay was so wonderful, this point stood out as slightly disappointing. Other than that minor issue, it truly was a fantastic accommodation! Being close to Jigoku Meguri made for an incredibly meaningful trip overall. Thank you very much!

    I fully enjoyed Beppu.

    We went on a trip to celebrate our golden wedding anniversary. The scenery, Onsen, meals (teppanyaki), and service were all excellent, allowing us to fully enjoy Beppu. We would love to visit again if we have the chance.

    Onsen pump malfunction

    This was my first time staying here, and I was very satisfied with the service, room, and food. I felt it was a great choice and wanted to come back again! However, at night, both the open-air bath and indoor bath turned into cold water baths. After that, I didn’t use the baths anymore. Upon checking out, I asked about the issue and was told that only the pump for the detached accommodation had broken down, so Onsen water wasn’t available. If you were aware of this issue, I believe you should have informed me or offered an apology. Choosing a detached room wasn’t inexpensive; therefore, this aspect was truly disappointing.

    Delicious meals and a relaxing stay brought me to this accommodation. I checked the reviews and decided on this place. Perhaps because it was a weekday or just by chance, I didn’t encounter other guests at the front desk or the large public bath, and there were no noticeable voices or footsteps in the hallway near my room. There didn’t seem to be many small children either. The room and bath were spacious, quiet, and perfect for a peaceful stay. Dinner was teppanyaki—different from your usual teppanyaki! The sauce seemed carefully crafted, making it a unique course meal only possible at a hotel of this caliber. It was unfortunate that there wasn’t an explanation for the salad dressing; I ended up eating it without using any dressing. Breakfast was also teppanyaki! While I had imagined Japanese-style breakfast at an onsen accommodation, I chose teppanyaki out of curiosity—and it turned out to be an excellent choice! Salad, bread, clam chowder, sausages, bacon, egg dishes, hamburger steak, sautéed codfish, pineapple smoothie, yogurt—it’s a familiar lineup but served freshly prepared right in front of you instead of buffet-style excessiveness. The omelet made on that large iron plate was especially impressive! It would have been even better if coffee had been served as well. I didn’t give full marks for service or baths because nothing stood out as exceptional—but they weren’t bad at all; just average. This is the perfect accommodation for a slightly luxurious reward trip—a hotel that makes you want to visit again!

    The Japanese cuisine...

    The Japanese cuisine was carefully prepared and absolutely delicious. The Onsen facilities included both a large public bath and a private room option, allowing for a relaxing and comfortable experience. The accommodation was impeccably clean, providing a pleasant stay with a sense of cleanliness throughout. The staff were all friendly and welcoming, offering excellent service with warm smiles. Additionally, the accommodation is conveniently located just a short walk from the Jigoku Meguri (Hell Tour) spots, making it ideal for sightseeing. This is an excellent choice for those looking to spend quiet and peaceful time. I would love to visit again—thank you!

    Onsen in the Room

    I stay at Onsen accommodations around the whole country 40 times a year, but unfortunately, the Onsen in the room this time was disappointing. The water did not overflow from the bathtub, there was not enough hot water, and the Onsen was lukewarm. The meals were average as well.

    It was excellent!

    We stayed at the accommodation to celebrate our mother's 88th birthday with my siblings. Before our stay, we requested a surprise cake and a change to filet steak, and the staff kindly accommodated our requests. Thanks to their efforts, when the cake was served, they provided a celebratory red vest and even took a commemorative photo for us. They also gifted us a photo frame and chopsticks, which deeply moved our mother! The meat was tender and incredibly delicious! It was our first time staying together as a group of four, but the room was spacious and very comfortable. We are so glad we chose Kaminoen! We are truly grateful to everyone. Thank you so much for your hospitality!

    Traditional Accommodation

    It was a Ryokan with an impressively spacious property. The stay began with a rare room guide and facility explanation, which was very helpful given the vastness of the Ryokan. I hope this service continues in the future. Although it seemed like we had reserved a relatively small room, it felt more than spacious for three people, making us feel quite humbled. Since we reserved a room in the main building, the large communal bath was far away. This was something we were aware of beforehand; however, walking in the indoor footwear provided was somewhat uncomfortable and tiring on our feet. A tall and slender gentleman wearing a mask (unfortunately I didn’t catch his name) provided exceptionally kind and attentive service during our meal—thank you very much! While all staff members offered excellent hospitality, having one standout staff member leaves such a memorable impression that it ensures this Ryokan will be considered for future stays without question. The food was delicious as well! Personally, I particularly enjoyed the tofu hot pot served at breakfast—the rich flavor of soybeans stood out beautifully. After finishing off the tofu, being able to enjoy yuba (tofu skin) from the same dish made for an even more delightful meal. Thank you so much; I look forward to staying here again!

    Family Trip

    I searched for a good accommodation in Beppu Onsen on IKYU and chose this one. The view from the large public bath, the cobalt blue onsen, the Noh theater, and the overall scenery of the accommodation made me excited after seeing photos shared by previous guests. This accommodation did not disappoint my excitement. When making the reservation, I was unsure how to select dinner, breakfast, and children's menu options. Unfortunately, what was served included items my child could not eat. It seems that if I had selected a children's menu during the reservation process beforehand, it would have been possible to arrange it; however, I only made a reservation based on selecting the number of people without realizing this option existed—this was my mistake. Although it's generally difficult to change menus without prior reservations, they kindly adjusted it to provide meals suitable for children. Thank you so much for your understanding! (It would be even better if such details were clearer during the reservation process.) For meals: we chose Tsurumi Kaiseki cuisine for dinner and Western-style breakfast—everything was delicious. I would love to stay at Sora-kan or one of their detached accommodations next time as well. Thank you very much!

    It was comfortable.

    As a traditional accommodation, I expected it to be old-fashioned, but the interior was well-maintained and very comfortable. The bed in the Japanese-Western style room was cozy, and the private hot spring bath with free-flowing water had perfect water temperature anytime, which was very convenient. Bath towels and face towels were provided both in the room and at the large public bath, which was also a nice touch. The dinner was delicious as well. Thanks to Kaminoen, I thoroughly enjoyed my trip. Thank you!

    I was very satisfied.

    We stayed as a family of four during our visit to Oita. We booked a Japanese-Western style room with an indoor and open-air bath. The room was very spacious, allowing us to relax comfortably. Amenities were well-prepared, including extra towels, sleepwear, and water, which made our stay stress-free. The rooftop open-air bath was beautifully maintained with flower beds, providing a pleasant bathing experience. For dinner, we enjoyed dishes like lobster and steak cooked on a teppanyaki grill; every dish was delicious and left us fully satisfied. Breakfast offered both Japanese and Western options; either choice would be satisfying. I chose the Japanese breakfast, and the grilled salmon was particularly delightful. The staff included many international members who were all polite and dedicated in their service, making us feel warmly welcomed—thank you very much for that. Overall, it was an excellent experience in every aspect. However, reaching the parking lot of Sora no Yakata involved navigating steep slopes with sharp curves that made us nervous about scraping the car's underside. Fortunately, their website provided prior notice about this steep slope so we could prepare accordingly. We look forward to staying here again when visiting Beppu!

    The water was truly ...

    The water was truly Beppu's Onsen water. It was a natural free-flowing hot spring, clean and refreshing, making it a delightful Onsen experience after a long time. However, as it was free-flowing from the source, the water was slightly hot. The food was also incredibly delicious.

    It was a very nice accommodation.

    I stayed with my elderly parents. The overall atmosphere of the accommodation left a very good impression. We stayed in a room with a private bath. It was very spacious, well-equipped, and clean. The large public onsen was located at a high position and offered great views. The food was seasoned just right and suited our Kansai tastes; it was very delicious. The staff were polite and kind in their service. We would love to visit again. Although I had read about the "blue onsen," it wasn't blue that day, which was a bit disappointing, but the water itself was very pleasant to bathe in. To me, the temperature felt slightly hot, but it warmed my body thoroughly. Both of my parents were extremely satisfied with our stay.

    Excellent location for sightseeing, courteous service, and a wonderful public bath.

    From check-in and being shown to our Room through to check-out, the staff were consistently kind, attentive, and professional. The Room was clean, and everything—from the amenities to the yukata—was very convenient to use. The semi-open-air private hot-spring bath with free-flowing water in the Room was outstanding! We were completely satisfied with both the water temperature and the spaciousness. The large public bath was also spacious, and the open-air bath had a great view. All of the hair dryers were ReFa. We enjoyed delicious, carefully prepared Japanese meals for both breakfast and dinner. This is an Accommodation we highly recommend—we were extremely satisfied. Thank you very much.

    Wonderful accommodation, will visit again.

    I chose this accommodation simply because I wanted to soak in cobalt blue hot springs, but it turned out to be an exceptional stay beyond my expectations. Upon later research, I discovered it is a historic and renowned accommodation. Visiting without prior knowledge, I was immediately impressed by the excellent location, grand entrance gate, and expansive facilities. 【Room】 The annex features spacious rooms with open-air onsen baths fed directly from the source. From the large windows, you can see steam rising here and there, evoking the charm of Beppu. Despite being surrounded by nature where insects are expected, they were hardly seen inside the room—evidence of thorough cleaning. The extensive use of wood and presence of onsen may cause a slightly unusual smell at first but you quickly get used to it. The fluffy towels provided in sets of three per person were delightful! Amenities are from Mikimoto. The open-air bath is made of stone while the indoor bath is crafted from cypress wood; both offer clear water for a relaxing soak. 【Onsen】 Absolutely amazing! It seems that the color changes depending on the day; during my visit, the indoor women's bath had a beautiful milky blue hue while the outdoor bath was clear. Perhaps different sources feed each tub? Both had soft and smooth water that felt gentle on my skin—it left my skin incredibly silky smooth! Showerheads and hairdryers are ReFa brand, with large bottles of Mikimoto shampoo products available as well. The mats underfoot were plush and appeared to be frequently cleaned or replaced—a testament to meticulous attention by management. My only complaint would be that one box-style bath was too hot to enter comfortably—I almost burned myself sitting down (laughs). 【Dining】 I opted for a teppanyaki course meal which was absolutely delicious! Simple yet profound flavors brought out by highlighting quality ingredients paired with perfect cooking techniques made both vegetables and meat outstanding in texture and taste. The portion size suited me perfectly—I’d love to enjoy this meal again. Overall, this accommodation excels in nearly every aspect one could desire from an onsen trip at an exceptionally high level. Even my husband—who usually leaves all lodging decisions up to me—remarked that he would like to return here again soon! We look forward eagerly revisiting before long!

    This is truly something...

    The bartender's attitude was terrible, with no explanation of the original cocktails. The menu was handed over carelessly, and after serving the drinks, they went off to chat near the front desk. The next morning during checkout, when leaving the Room, I happened to pass by the same bartender, but there was no greeting as a Hotel staff member. The Room itself wasn't bad, but that attitude was unacceptable. It reflected extremely poor training—by far the worst I've experienced.

    Enjoy exquisite cuisine and relaxing baths - a Ryokan you'll want to revisit.

    ① Dinner: Teppanyaki was excellent in both quantity and taste. Since we drink alcohol, we would have preferred a slower pace, but it helped us drink less, so let's consider that a positive! Breakfast: We could choose between Japanese and Western styles. I chose Japanese. The covered dish on the far right in the photo was yudofu (hot tofu), and everything was delicious. ② Bath: Both the indoor bath and open-air bath were spacious. The open-air bath offered a great view from high up overlooking the port, both at night and in the morning. There wasn’t a traditional sauna, but there was a wooden single-person sauna where only your head sticks out. I tried it in the morning, but it was too hot—so much so that even with two special towels underneath me, my thighs felt like they might burn after just one minute. Temperature adjustment is needed. ③ Room: We stayed in a main building Japanese-Western style room with an open-air bath for three people. There were two beds in the Western-style area and one futon laid out in the Japanese-style area. I slept on a bed, but those who used the futon said it wasn’t disappointing—it was made of fine cotton and very comfortable to sleep on. The toilet worked fine at check-in but became clogged around 11 PM and couldn’t be used anymore. Considering it was late at night, we avoided disturbing others by using the toilet near reception instead of contacting them immediately. When we mentioned this during breakfast time, they told us to contact them even during late hours if such issues occur again. At checkout, they kindly gave us some sweets as an apology for our inconvenience. Apparently, as more foreign guests stay here recently, toilets often get clogged due to excessive use of toilet paper. ④ Service: Excellent service overall. Although there were some downsides during our stay, they were outweighed by all of its positives—we’d love to come back again! With many foreign staff members present now too though; for detailed requests or concerns specifically asking local Japanese staff might work better. *Just my personal opinion—but if bringing elderly parents along next time since walking from Main Building rooms towards large public baths takes longer distances perhaps staying within Sora Wing accommodations closer proximity-wise seems ideal?

    I stayed with my par...

    I stayed with my parents at the Chukan accommodation. The staff provided excellent service, making it the best accommodation I have ever stayed at. Most of the staff were foreigners, but they were very polite and attentive. The amenities were good, though the wooden clogs for indoor use were a bit difficult to walk in. While the onsen ryokan had a traditional atmosphere, the distance to the large public bath, stairs, and sloped pathways were somewhat tiring. We stayed in a Japanese-style room with futons laid out for three people; however, the pillows were too low and uncomfortable to sleep on—having two pillows like those provided with beds would have been appreciated. The meals—both dinner and breakfast—were plentiful and delicious! The location was convenient for visiting Jigoku Meguri (Hell Tour), and we enjoyed spending time in the spacious large public bath. I would love to stay here again when visiting Beppu. Thank you very much!

    I used this accommodation to celebrate my father's birthday. The service was attentive and thoughtful, and I was satisfied with everything, including the guest room, large public bath, and meals.     A thoughtful and wonderful accommodation

    The staff made a great effort to accommodate allergies and requests, leaving a positive impression. Their service was polite and attentive. The slope leading to the parking lot of the Sora building was quite steep—perhaps due to ongoing construction? Amenities were excellent, and cleanliness was impeccable. It’s a beautiful inn. The meals were delicious; however, for further improvement, refining the menu descriptions, dish names, ease of eating, presentation aesthetics, and flavors beyond expectations would be ideal. Having dined at various places through IKYU.com, I found the food very tasty but encourage aiming for perfection with 120 points! Next time, I’m considering staying in the main building instead.

    Stayed at the accommodation to celebrate the 88th birthday.

    Last August, we stayed in the main building, and this time we stayed in the Sora building's Shun room to celebrate my mother's 88th birthday! We had ordered a cake as an extra request, but they surprised us with flowers and a photo as well, which made my mother very happy! The Onsen and meals were wonderful, but the staff's hospitality was especially excellent. Thank you so much! We plan to stay again for her 90th birthday celebration!

    We used the service ...

    We used the service for a 60th birthday celebration. We requested a custom cake, and as a surprise, they provided fireworks, chopsticks, took photos, and gave us the photos in a photo frame. My parents were very moved, and we were extremely satisfied with the service that exceeded our expectations. This time we used the special room (Tsutsuji), but I was only concerned about the lack of towels for the steam sauna. We would like to use it again for future celebrations.

    It was my second stay.

    I first stayed at the Property two years ago in September, and this was my second stay on the 12th. The Room was clean and well-maintained, just like last time, making for a pleasant stay. I stayed at the same building, "Chukan," two years ago and again this time, and I particularly enjoyed the open-air bath. The meals, both dinner and breakfast, were very delicious.     Exceptional Hot Springs

    "Soaking in the Beppu Onsen at the beginning of winter will keep you from catching a cold that winter," was something said in my grandmother's generation. However, Beppu has long been associated with group tours from the Showa era, so I often passed it by and went to Yufuin instead. For a year-end trip with multiple families, with varying ages and interests, we chose this large hotel, and it turned out to be a great success. The onsen source of this property is simply amazing; after a one-night, two-day stay, my skin was smooth, and my fingertips tingled with improved circulation, which was astonishing. The room had two stone baths. The large bath included an indoor bath with a box bath and a spacious open-air bath with a panoramic view of Beppu Bay and the city of Beppu. Hearing that all the baths are fed directly from the source, I was amazed by the abundance of hot water. Everyone in the family fell in love with the quality of this water. The hotel is located in a prime area of Beppu, and as we drove through the grand gate, the staff warmly welcomed us with elegant gestures despite the cold. They all spoke very fluent Japanese, but they were staff from Indonesia. Since Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University was established, I had heard that Beppu's internationalization was remarkable, and perhaps this is the influence? Overall, the impression was that the hospitality education was solid. Check-in was conducted in the lounge, where I casually discovered Chagall and Picasso on the walls. Other masterpieces by Kaii Higashiyama and Tatsuo Takayama were also scattered throughout the facility. All were genuine originals. The books in the lounge were also quite intriguing, giving a sense of rich cultural capital. For dining, we chose teppanyaki. In a private room, the chef prepared luxurious ingredients like Ise lobster, abalone, and sirloin right before our eyes. The taste was traditional hotel style. If you expect modern, petite fusion cuisine, you might be disappointed. Considering the price, I thought it was a very good offering, perhaps because Oita is blessed with ingredients. Both the chef and service staff were good conversationalists, making the experience enjoyable. This hotel, being large, seems to vary significantly in impression depending on the room. I think a room with a good view is preferable. If you expect the interior to be like a high-end sukiya-style ryokan, you might feel it's not quite right, but it was clean and sufficient. With an in-room onsen, two semi-double beds, and a combination of Japanese-style rooms, I was very happy. It's impressive that such a large facility can maintain a consistent level of cleanliness, service, and dining. Next time, I plan to visit for a personal onsen retreat.

    The cuisine, service...

    The cuisine, service, and Room were all excellent. We enjoyed both the kaiseki and teppanyaki. Thank you for accommodating our unreasonable requests to the fullest extent. We have traveled extensively from Tohoku to Kyushu, but there are few Ryokans that have satisfied us as much as this one, including the service. We will use it again when we visit Beppu. Thank you very much for this time.
