Fully equipped with everything you need.

It was an excellent Accommodation with nothing to complain about. If I have the chance to visit Beppu again, I would like to stay here again. Next time, I plan to have dinner at the teppanyaki restaurant.

    It feels less upscale.

The food is bad. It’s difficult because there are only foreign staff.

The meals and the Room are excellent.

This time, I stayed with my 93-year-old mother. I had informed them by phone in advance that an elderly guest would be with us, and they thoughtfully provided chairs in the Japanese-style Room and the in-room bath, and also took our mobility into account when arranging access to meals and the large public bath, which was a great help. The meals were also delicious, and we were very satisfied with this Accommodation.

    Unfortunately.

I had a great impression when I stayed here five years ago, but this time there were many disappointing aspects overall. The view from the Room and the in-room bath were good. As for what was disappointing: I understand that having many foreign staff is simply the sign of the times, but at dinner (teppanyaki) all of the staff were foreign, and they seemed so focused on cooking that they served the next dish while we were still eating. At the next table, they even forgot to serve the soup. The food itself tasted good, but we couldn’t enjoy a relaxed meal. It was my first time finishing dinner in less than an hour. I was told checkout would be automated, but there was no one at the front desk, so I just used the self-checkout machine and left. This is no longer a luxury Ryokan—it's better to think of it as a Business Hotel where you can use an Onsen. I won’t be returning.

    The Room was spaciou...

The Room was spacious, the meals were delicious, and the price wasn’t too high. I felt that in Hakone it would cost more than twice as much. There was an Onsen with an indoor bath, an open-air bath, and a steam box bath, and I was very satisfied. I had read Reviews in advance and saw some low ratings about the service. There are many foreign staff members, but I didn’t feel the service was particularly bad.

This was my first stay here, and everything—from the service and the Room to the food—was outstanding! It’s also close to the Hell Tour, and the amenities are well stocked, making it the perfect Accommodation for a special treat getaway. Next time, I’d love to try the kaiseki cuisine as well!

The hot spring water is wonderful, but several things feel a bit off.

We stayed in the Sora-kan maisonette type with two baths. The hot spring water was excellent, and the view was great. Dinner was teppanyaki style. The food was average, and we wished there were a bit more volume. There was little explanation about the Facility, and although we wanted to see the garden, we couldn’t. The Facility layout is complicated, and it felt like they were trying to cut back on service, which was disappointing. There are many overseas staff members as well. There were also many Southeast Asian guests, so if that bothers you, it may be safer to choose another place.

    We had the best time!

More than 30 years ago, I stayed here once in the previous building, so I arrived with some concerns. It has been transformed with a completely new concept, yet the good old traditions have been preserved, and I truly enjoyed a satisfying stay. A first-class Accommodation. This time it was just my spouse and me, but next time we would love to stay with our children and their families.

    Your First Beppu Onsen Experience

This was my first time visiting Beppu Onsen, and I stayed at Sansou Shinwaen. It is in an excellent location in Kannawa Onsen. The Facility feels generally aged, and I was particularly concerned about issues such as the base of the faucets in the large public bath, loose showerhead fittings, rust on sliding doors, and a squeaky bed. I believe repairs are needed as soon as possible. Also, having to go outside and walk across the parking area to reach the large public bath from its floor is unacceptable. Dinner at the Hotel’s teppanyaki restaurant was excellent. Breakfast was also satisfying. The “Hells” tour spots were nearby, so I enjoyed sightseeing.

    Just a moment...

I was expecting a purely traditional Ryokan, so the style of this Accommodation was a bit disappointing. Overall, it was acceptable. I’d like to note a few points: (1) We were shown to our Room, but shouldn’t guests’ outdoor shoes be placed in the shoe cabinet and indoor slippers set out for them? (2) At dinner, we were first seated with what seemed to be a group of Korean men behind us. They were very loud. I appreciate that you quickly accommodated our request to change seats, but I think the seating arrangement could use more consideration. (3) I understand you may be short-staffed, but it felt disappointing that no one saw us off after checkout. I would like you to take some cues from the service at more popular Ryokan. There were other issues as well, but that’s all for now. I will not return.

We were very satisfied with our three-generation trip.

We visited Sora-kan on a three-generation trip with our grandchildren. The Room was spacious and came with an open-air bath, so we could truly relax. Even though we hadn’t requested anything in advance, the Room for infants had a diaper pail, baby bath, children’s wash bucket, child-sized floor chair, and even baby soap—an impressively well-equipped service. We also enjoyed a delicious teppanyaki meal. They kindly provided rice as part of the service as well, which was very helpful. The staff’s friendly service with warm smiles was wonderful. The only downside was that it’s so large that it’s easy to get lost, but we would definitely like to stay again.

    It was excellent.

I was nervous visiting Beppu Onsen for the first time, but choosing this Hotel was absolutely the right decision. The Room was spacious with an amazing view, and everything—from the large public bath and the scenic in-room Onsen to the teppanyaki dinner and breakfast—felt truly extraordinary. I was also very comforted by the dedicated guidance from the international staff. Thank you very much.

    Not quite satisfactory.

The only good point is the continuously flowing bath in the guest Room. The walk from the Room to the public bath is far, and in winter you have to go outside, so it’s freezing cold. The washing area was far too cold and the shower water pressure was extremely weak—I was shivering. The open-air bath was also too cold to warm up in. I had high expectations for the baths, so this was disappointing. Breakfast had a lot of items, but each one tasted mediocre. I’d rather have a simpler selection with better quality.

I wish the large public bath were open a bit longer, and that there were separate hours for men and women.

We stayed in the Main Building Barrier-Free Twin for a Multiple Night Stay. The Room was comfortable, and we were satisfied with the meals. The bath in the Room wasn’t blue, but it was a pleasant Onsen and we enjoyed it. Although it was a Multiple Night Stay, the large public bath is open from 6:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., and then you can’t use it again until 3:00 p.m., which was a bit disappointing. To ship souvenirs by courier, we received cardboard boxes and shipping forms at the front desk, but I accidentally forgot to ask for packing tape. When I called the front desk, they told me to come pick it up, which surprised me a little. Going back and forth before checkout made me break a sweat. Other than that, all of the staff were very kind, and we had a pleasant stay.

    Everything is excellent.

I used to stay at Shinwaen every month. This was my first stay in a year, and it was wonderful as always. The Room was spacious, and I was fully satisfied with the cleanliness, the hot water, and the meals. This is an Accommodation I highly recommend everyone try at least once.

    More than memories (Facility)

The Facility met expectations and was flawless. The meals also use high-quality ingredients. However, that is exactly why the service was so disappointing. When serving the meal, it seemed that basic rules of service—such as seating order (e.g., host/guest of honor) and fundamental table-service etiquette—had not been taught. At check-in, although we were shown to a lovely Room where welcome drinks were served, the hospitality felt lacking. At check-out as well, we were told verbally—while staff remained seated—to “do it on that machine” and “bring the key here.” I understand that stronger support for international visitors is required and that a more multinational staff is necessary to remain competitive, but this did not meet the level of hospitality Japanese guests would expect for the price. Since this is not a Business Hotel, I believe the overall experience should be better designed.

    As expected from Kamiwaen.

It was my first stay here in a while. I chose the pufferfish full-course Plan, and since it was in a detached building, I never imagined I would be staying in an authentic thatched-roof tea house. When you open the entrance door, you’re greeted by the scent of incense, and a beautifully Japanese-style space unfolds. There are three Japanese-style Rooms, along with a microwave and a small refrigerator—very convenient for guests on a Multiple Night Stay. The indoor bath and open-air bath in the Room had slightly different Onsen temperatures, which was wonderful. However, the large public bath on the rooftop overlapped with check-in time and was very crowded, so I couldn’t use a locker. It may have just been bad timing, but it stood out. Since this was a Multiple Night Stay, I asked for only light cleaning. Even so, during a short outing everything had been neatly tidied up, which surprised me—in the best way. The staff were also very kind. The ReFa hair dryer, curling dryer brush, and shower head were all easy to use. The automated check-out also made me feel how times are changing. One thing to note: even with all the air conditioners running, the detached building felt cold. If you’re sensitive to cold temperatures, you may prefer staying in the new wing. This Accommodation always leaves me with a strong impression—I feel it’s one of Beppu’s Kannawa Onsen’s signature Accommodations that continues to evolve with each era. Thank you very much for taking such good care of us.

    I don’t understand w...

I don’t understand why the ratings are so good. The Onsen is lukewarm. Dinner felt like you just eat whatever is served. It was neither tasty nor enjoyable. In the morning, I chose a Western-style breakfast, but there was no coffee. They simply left water without asking. Even though it was only two small pieces of bread with no refills, they said you could get rice instead. It made no sense. There were some Diamond benefits—snacks and sparkling wine—in the Room refrigerator, but there was no explanation at all, so I left them behind. I will never go again, but I trusted the ratings and had high expectations, so I was disappointed and decided to write this Review.

Onsen Accommodation Next to Umi Jigoku

The Room was spacious, and the Onsen (the semi-open-air bath in the Room and the large public bath) was excellent. The bed had just the right firmness, and I slept well. What surprised me, however, was that most of the staff were foreigners, and almost all guests were also foreigners. This Accommodation may be focused on inbound tourism. I appreciate that the staff did their best to assist in Japanese, but as a Japanese guest, I did not feel the service matched the price. The explanations given in English for foreign guests were clearly different from what was explained to me; my explanation was extremely brief. The free drinks were non-alcoholic only. There were few options, and refills did not seem to be handled very proactively. The in-Room free drinks were also limited to bottled water, tea, and coffee. For alcohol in the Room, you need to buy it from a vending machine or bring your own. The teppanyaki dinner was average. The staff seemed rushed, so dishes came quickly and I couldn’t relax. For teppanyaki, you will share seating with other guests. Overall, it is not a bad Hotel, but it may not be suitable for those who want to spend a quiet time at an Onsen Accommodation. It is more than sufficient if your main goal is enjoying the Onsen, so I think it is a good Accommodation for people who prioritize Onsen access and sightseeing location.

    Oh no.

My husband and I stayed for two nights. We were very dissatisfied with the phone support (not kind) and the Room (candy wrappers, cigarette butts on the balcony, a dirty mirror, etc.). The food was delicious, but it was disappointing that the service varied depending on the staff member.

    Satisfied

to travel by car, but due to a heavy snow forecast we switched at the last minute to public transportation. We arrived safely as scheduled. We stayed in the Room “Sora” in the Tsuki building. It was a very clean Room, and the bath included both an indoor bath and an open-air bath. In this cold season, we were happy that the indoor bath had already been filled with hot water. The water temperature was just right. The view from the open-air bath was wonderful, and the next morning brought the snowy scenery exactly as forecast. Snowflakes were drifting down into the open-air bath as well. It was cold, but that made it even more special. There were also plenty of towels. One of our highlights at this Accommodation was the food. The teppanyaki dishes were cooked right in front of us and served while we watched, so we could enjoy them with our eyes as well. Everything was truly delicious with a variety of seasonings. For breakfast, my husband ordered Japanese-style while I chose Western-style, and both menus were satisfying. The Western-style breakfast was also prepared right in front of us again. Perhaps he was the head chef? A male staff member spoke to each guest thoughtfully, which made us feel warmly welcomed. One small disappointment: there was a questionnaire left in our Room that belonged to a previous guest. We asked the front desk for a new one and were told they would bring it to us, but it never arrived. Because of that I rated the Room and service 4 stars, though it’s almost a 5. We’d love to come back someday.

    Satisfied.

Large public bath, private open-air baths in guest rooms, and indoor baths. We were satisfied and enjoyed them. The Facility is large, so it can't be helped, but transferring elevators to reach the public bath felt a bit inconvenient due to the cold weather. However, overall we were satisfied. The seasoning of the meals suited our taste, and breakfast was hearty and enjoyable.

    It was a comfortable accommodation.

Some foreign staff members seemed to have a slight language barrier, but their efforts to be kind and helpful were appreciated. The meals, Room, and bath were all excellent, making for a comfortable one-night stay. Thank you for informing us in advance about the parking situation between the main building and the annex. However, as we relied on car navigation (which inevitably directed us to the annex parking lot when entering the address), it would have been helpful if you had provided either a separate address for the main building or a nearby landmark to avoid confusion.

Too spacious for just two people...

We stayed in the special room "Ume." Although it was just the two of us, the accommodation was so spacious that we didn’t use the two Japanese-style rooms. Next time, we’d love to visit with our whole family. Our stay coincided with a severe cold wave, and snow was falling lightly. Since highways from Hiji were closed, we were glad not to have chosen Yufuin as our destination. Despite the cold weather, we decided to relax at the accommodation instead of going out since we've already visited Jigoku Meguri before. We used the private bath in our room about five times and also visited Chukan once. However, it was a bit far away and chilly on the way back, so we returned to enjoy our room's bath again. The hot spring quality left our skin smooth and felt wonderful. The meals were perfectly portioned and delicious. There were many foreign staff members working there, but they all worked earnestly and diligently. Usually when I stay somewhere else, I find futons too warm but feel cold without them—this wasn’t an issue here! The futon had just the right warmth for a comfortable sleep. It truly was an excellent accommodation! Thank you very much!

This is an accommodation for inbound travelers.

This accommodation seems to cater to tour groups and inbound travelers. While polite, it lacks warmth. The property is quite spacious, but there were no explanations provided on how to easily access the large public bath. As for dining, I cannot comment on the teppanyaki or other offerings at Chukan, but the Japanese cuisine did not match its price point. While luxurious ingredients like spiny lobster and abalone were used, they seemed frozen or not fresh, making them less enjoyable. It felt reminiscent of an outdated wedding menu. Even for breakfast soup, the menu listed "clear soup," but miso soup was served instead. When asked about this by someone who appeared to be a chef, they could not explain the difference. The rice served during dinner was delicious. There are many better accommodations available elsewhere; I will not be returning here again.

    Exceptional hospitality and outstanding baths.

The hospitality was excellent. Even when we requested a commemorative photo at the end, the staff, despite being busy, kindly took multiple shots with a smile and in the best positions. During check-in and meal times, there were foreign staff members as well, but they spoke Japanese fluently and provided pleasant service. What stood out most was that despite being a large accommodation, there were no delays during check-in, check-out, or meals. The baths were not crowded at all, allowing for a relaxing experience. The large public bath was truly amazing. The view from the rooftop open-air bath was stunning, and the steam and sulfur scent in the indoor bath added to the authentic Onsen atmosphere. There were only minor concerns worth mentioning. Regarding the men's bath (I cannot speak for the women's), as noted earlier, there was significant steam in the indoor bath which slightly obstructed visibility. Personally, I found this added to the Onsen ambiance and considered it a positive aspect; however, it might be concerning for elderly guests. According to my family member who used the women's bath, there wasn’t as much steam on their side. Additionally—and this is unavoidable—the distance from our room to the large public bath was somewhat far which was slightly disappointing. Since we stayed during New Year’s holidays it might have been expected but I would have liked dishes that showcased more local ingredients. That said, this is truly an exceptional accommodation where you can see many regular guests returning frequently based on conversations with other visitors or observations during our stay. It has become one of my favorite accommodations that I would love to visit again someday! Thank you very much!

I stayed here as it is said to be the most luxurious in Beppu.

The most surprising thing upon arrival at the accommodation was the large number of foreign guests. About 80% were from peninsular and continental regions, making it difficult to spot Japanese guests. Perhaps due to cultural differences, some children made loud noises during meals or watched videos at high volume, which was disappointing. Despite this, the staff greeted us with smiles and kindly provided a quieter area for us, which we appreciated. As for the meals, the Ise lobster and abalone were tough and felt like a missed opportunity. However, the abalone and squid served as teppanyaki were tender and delicious, likely due to different chefs preparing them. The room was satisfactory overall but had a strange setup with a reception set in a Japanese-style room. Replacing it with comfortable sofas would make for a more relaxing stay. The old air purifier and humidifier were noisy, so we turned them off. The room's onsen featured both indoor and semi-open-air baths with flowing hot spring water that we thoroughly enjoyed. Bathing early in the morning while watching the sunrise became an unforgettable experience!

    Wasn't it an observation bath?

The location offers a great view of Beppu Onsen town, but the outdoor bath had black glass for privacy, which blocked the view while soaking. Even though bathing clothes were provided, it was unclear why this was necessary. The teppanyaki dinner included luxurious items like abalone, lobster, and marbled steak; however, the Western-style sauce didn’t suit my taste. It would be nice to have more options to choose from. The abalone was pre-cut and stir-fried for quick serving but ended up being tough and lacked flavor. Serving it whole and cooked medium or rare might have been better. Additionally, I noticed that the portion sizes of ingredients served to neighboring guests (who appeared to be Asian tourists) were visibly smaller than ours—this difference was surprising and noticeable even to them. Recently, many hotels employ foreign staff members; while some struggled with Japanese or missed certain instructions we hoped for, their efforts are appreciated as they improve over time. The welcome and farewell gestures were well-done and left a positive impression. For breakfast, guests can choose between a Japanese set meal or Western-style dishes prepared in front of them on an iron plate (e.g., omelets or sausages). However, we were told meal choices must be made two days in advance—perhaps due to accommodation logistics? The Japanese breakfast came as a three-tiered tray with plenty of delicious dishes that even younger guests would find satisfying. As for our room in "Sora-kan" with an open-air bath attached—it was spacious enough for four people. Although we couldn’t fully enjoy the outdoor bath since we traveled as a group, having both indoor and outdoor baths available was convenient. A pleasant surprise awaited us: complimentary sparkling wine in the fridge! Overall there were both good points and minor issues during our stay; thank you for your hospitality! We may consider returning again someday!

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

We chose this accommodation for its private open-air bath and the view of Beppu's steam-filled scenery. The staff's attentiveness and warm smiles were exceptional, and they answered our questions with great care. Knowing it was our 30th wedding anniversary trip, the staff kindly gave us a commemorative photo and a gift, making it a truly memorable journey. The meals were very delicious. We had teppanyaki breakfast for both mornings of our two-night stay, but the menu was exactly the same each day, which was slightly disappointing. It might be better to add some variety for guests on multiple night stays. The room, bath, amenities, and view were all outstanding. We would love to stay here again when visiting Beppu!
