    It was excellent.

    I stayed with my parents, making it a group of three. All three of us agreed that this was undoubtedly the best accommodation we have ever stayed at, and we were extremely satisfied. The spacious room, well-equipped amenities, free drinks, delicious meals, and the incredibly kind staff—all aspects were exceptional. The onsen was filled with mineral deposits and had a delightful sulfur aroma that truly felt like an authentic onsen experience. The changing rooms were impeccably clean, making it very comfortable to use. We reserved the private baths twice at our preferred times and used the room's bath as well for a total of five times during our stay. It was also thoughtful to have bath towels available in both the large public bath and private baths. Although there wasn’t a fire lit in the irori (traditional hearth) room when we visited, there were many nostalgic toys from old times which made it very enjoyable. During meals, drinks were all-you-can-drink; beverages were also provided in both the lounge and refrigerator—allowing us to spend an incredibly luxurious time. We were amazed by its 360 years of history! The valuable furnishings added charm to our stay. We absolutely want to visit again someday. Thank you so much!

    Two Concerns

    After retirement, I often travel but always struggle with choosing destinations and accommodations. Popular spots for inbound tourists tend to be expensive and noisy, so I usually avoid them. Hakone is an extremely popular destination both domestically and internationally, especially influenced by inbound tourism. I was concerned about whether I could spend time quietly or if cultural differences might cause discomfort. To address this concern, I chose Matsuzakaya Honten, thinking that its scale might make it less suitable for large group stays. Although there were a few international guests, they were surprisingly quiet and respectful, allowing me to relax completely without any issues. My second concern was about noise. Traditional wooden buildings often have weaknesses in terms of air conditioning and sound insulation. While the hallways were understandably cold during winter, the room and lounge were warm and comfortable enough to enjoy my stay fully. However, regarding noise—my room was on the first floor, so I worried about how much noise would depend on the guests staying directly above me. There were occasional sounds from upstairs but nothing too bothersome until around 10 AM when it became unusually noisy as cleaning seemed to start after the upstairs guests checked out. The sound of vacuuming? Rolling noises on the floor? Footsteps thumping—it all disrupted what could have been a peaceful morning. Despite being eligible for IKYU Diamond Member late check-out benefits, it wasn’t relaxing anymore due to these noises; hence I decided to check out earlier than planned. The Onsen atmosphere, meals, service quality from all staff members who worked diligently—all of these aspects exceeded expectations except for this one issue with noise during cleaning hours which left me slightly disappointed. I understand that rooms need thorough cleaning within limited timeframes; however perhaps prioritizing other vacant rooms first or implementing measures considerate towards downstairs guests would enhance overall guest satisfaction further!

    Excellent!

    I recently stayed at both Hakone accommodations, "Zen" and "Matsuzakaya Honten." While I was initially looking forward to my stay at "Zen," the service and meals at Matsuzakaya Honten exceeded my expectations, leaving a lasting impression. The private onsen reservations were simple, and the baths were more spacious and comfortable than I had imagined. Out of the five private onsens available, I used four of them, each with its own unique charm and appeal. Additionally, enjoying morning coffee or tea as well as afternoon wine or spirits in several relaxing lounge areas within the facility became a daily highlight for me. The accommodation was spacious with a calm atmosphere that allowed me to fully relax without feeling crowded. If I had to mention one minor downside, it would be that some of the soups tasted slightly too salty for my preference. This trip was with friends, but next time I hope to visit with my family. This has become my favorite ryokan among all those I've stayed at so far. Thank you for providing such a wonderful experience!

    Haikara-san Passes Through

    We visited on a cold day for our 18th wedding anniversary and another special occasion, making it an exciting trip for us as a couple. The staff's attire resembled traditional "Haikara-san" style, which matched beautifully with the black pillars, creating a charming atmosphere. The nerikiri sweets and green tea served were delicious, and the interior was clean and elegant, making us very happy. The room we were shown to had fresh tatami mats and a cozy kotatsu. My husband, who had been under stress due to recent events at the end of last month, looked relaxed and content. Both breakfast and dinner were thoughtfully prepared to accommodate our preferences, and everything was truly delicious. We also appreciated the refined demeanor of the staff. Although there was a minor issue during our stay, their response exceeded expectations. While they didn’t know about our quiet celebratory trip as a couple, their thoughtful service made it feel like we were being celebrated nonetheless—it left us deeply moved. Though winter road conditions may be concerning due to ice formation, this has become an accommodation we would love to visit again in the future. Thank you very much for this wonderful experience!

    We visit Hakone every year around this time to celebrate my wife's birthday, and this accommodation ranks at the very top for us. The hospitality, the quality of the hot spring water, the history of the accommodation, and its majestic presence—all of it captivated us. We look forward to visiting again next year.     Famous Hot Springs

    This was my first time staying here. Due to my reservation mistake, I booked a room without a bath, but the private baths were easy to reserve, and I was able to enjoy them three times, which made me very satisfied. The hot springs truly lived up to their reputation! The meals were delicious, and I was pleasantly surprised that drinks during meals were included in the all-inclusive plan. However, there were some disappointments: While charming, the hallways were extremely cold as the air conditioning infrastructure seemed insufficient. Additionally, the amenities felt lacking.

    [Couples' Trip] Completely Satisfied

    We stayed for one night as a couple and were extremely satisfied with the private open-air Onsen, large public bath, other facilities, cuisine, amenities, and the spacious room. However, what impressed us the most was the exceptional quality of service provided by all staff members. The Onsen itself was also perfect, allowing us to enjoy a very relaxing bath experience. Even at our departure, despite the rain, we were gifted an original umbrella as part of their thoughtful hospitality. It was truly a remarkable service experience. We look forward to visiting again someday with family or as a couple. Thank you very much!

    For international travelers

    Whether you visit the large public bath or the private Onsen, you can often enjoy it all to yourself. It might depend on the timing, but even though the facility was nearly fully booked, I wondered where all the other guests were. In my opinion, the quality of this Onsen's water is among the best, so it's a shame not to take advantage of such spacious baths. With about half of our guests being international travelers, perhaps they feel hesitant about using a large public bath due to unfamiliarity. Private Onsens could be a great alternative for them in such cases. Encouraging more international visitors to try private Onsens might help them appreciate Japan's unique Onsen culture even more!

    I was very satisfied...

    I was very satisfied with my stay. The staff's hospitality was excellent, and I was impressed by the well-trained young team members. The historically rich atmosphere and the large public bath were also delightful. If I may offer some suggestions, it would be helpful to provide small towels in addition to bath towels in the public bath area. As a smoker, I noticed that the ashtray in the smoking area had not been cleaned for two days and was overflowing with cigarette butts, which concerned me.

    Felt the history.

    A historic Ryokan with a traditional atmosphere, where you can feel history throughout the Facility. The meals were very delicious, and the service was extremely polite. If I may suggest, it would be better to have a basket for clothes in the guest room. Also, the key to the guest room was slightly stiff and difficult to turn, but other than that, I was very satisfied. It seemed like there were more foreign tourists than Japanese tourists.

    A long-established Ryokan in Hakone

    We stayed as a group of 11 this time. We arrived a bit early but were welcomed with tea and traditional sweets in the lounge. About half of the staff are foreigners, and it seems that over 70% of the guests are also from overseas. The accommodation is filled with elements that reflect its history and tradition, and we never overlapped with other guests in the large public bath (perhaps because there were many foreign guests?). In our room, there was an adorable towel art cake as requested, which warmed our hearts. The meals were very delicious, and my parents were extremely pleased. As an all-inclusive accommodation, we had certain expectations; however, drinks available included draft beer, red/white wine, sake, juice, coffee, and tea in the lounge. During meals as well—only draft beer, red/white wine or sake was offered. While there was highball available in the room's refrigerator—it felt somewhat underwhelming overall. It would have been nice to have sparkling wine or even shochu or whiskey available—not necessarily champagne. On a personal note regarding current trends catering heavily to inbound tourism—I find it less appealing as a Japanese guest myself. While this is a historic ryokan with great charm—it might be difficult for me to revisit until things settle down regarding inbound tourism dynamics here again someday!

    Even the affordable Room was satisfying.

    This time, I chose a more affordable room, but I still enjoyed my stay even without a private bath. Although the large public Onsen isn't open all night, there are free cold drinks available. No additional charges for drinks during meals either. Considering the price, it was a highly satisfying accommodation experience. As always, the quality of the Onsen is excellent—the fluffy mineral deposits in the water are fascinating, and it has that classic Onsen aroma which is delightful. The separate bedroom and living area made it very comfortable to stay in. The meals were simple yet carefully prepared—just my style. I'd love to visit again!

    Staying with Elderly Parents

    I stayed at this accommodation in Hakone, known for its wonderful baths and tranquil atmosphere that offers an extraordinary experience. The recently renovated Spring Breeze Inn and baths perfectly combine tradition with modern comfort, meeting all expectations. The meals were not overly extravagant but featured gentle dishes that highlighted the ingredients, which even my elderly parents thoroughly enjoyed. There were more international guests than Japanese visitors, and thanks to the private bath usage by others, I had the luxury of enjoying the large public bath with hot spring minerals all to myself both in the morning and evening.

    Use of Tokiwano

    Perhaps because it was a weekday in September or due to the high number of Western guests, I was able to enjoy the large public bath all to myself at any time. I fully enjoyed the room's open-air bath, private open-air baths, and the large public bath. Many of the staff members were from overseas, but everyone was very pleasant and made my stay extremely comfortable. If I may make a suggestion, it would be nice to have a coffee machine in the lounge. Also, there were some spider webs here and there in the baths that caught my attention. Nonetheless, I look forward to visiting again in winter!

    For a birthday trip

    I usually don't write reviews, but this Ryokan was so wonderful that I felt compelled to share my experience. Despite our late arrival, we were warmly welcomed, and since I had mentioned it was my partner's birthday, they even decorated the room for us, which was truly touching. The food was absolutely delicious, and the private open-air bath was exceptional. As others have mentioned in their reviews, the staff's hospitality was outstanding. Even after check-out, we were offered free drinks and kindly asked if we'd like a photo taken—such thoughtful gestures made us very happy. This Ryokan exudes a sense of privacy and is truly charming. Thank you for all your kind attention to detail. We would love to visit again!

    It is a great accommodation.

    I visited this accommodation 7 years ago with my eldest daughter and son's family, and since it was such a wonderful place, I decided to bring my second son's family this time. The calm atmosphere, delicious meals, and onsen were just as enjoyable as before. My grandchild received an onsen pass as a keepsake. My 3-year-old grandchild mentioned how much they enjoyed the bath, so if there's another opportunity, I would love to visit again with all four families.

    It was excellent.

    The classical charm before the renovation was wonderful, but after the renewal, the blend of old and new has become even more delightful, allowing us to enjoy a truly pleasant time. The meals were also incredibly delicious. There were many international guests, and it was impressive to see everyone elegantly wearing yukata and relaxing.

    A Wonderful Accommodation Experience

    I treated myself to a stay as a reward after finishing a busy period at work. The Onsen, the staff's hospitality, and the facilities were all excellent, making it an accommodation I would love to visit again. - Onsen Both the private open-air bath and the large public bath had excellent water quality, and the facilities were clean and very relaxing. - Hospitality There were many foreign staff members, but everyone was very kind. In particular, the person who served us during dinner provided outstanding service. - Meals Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. However, I felt that the handmade natto at breakfast was difficult to eat without soy sauce. The sashimi was incredibly fresh and tasty. - Facilities The building has historical charm but is well-maintained with thorough cleaning. One point of concern was that my room did not have lace curtains; while the blackout curtains worked well for sleeping at night, in the morning when I wanted to open them for light, I felt uncomfortable about visibility from outside. Overall, it was a wonderful hotel experience. Thank you for providing such a lovely time—I look forward to visiting again!

    It is indeed a wonderful accommodation.

    The review is a bit late, but we stayed for one night with children. We revisited for the first time in four years because we wanted to soak in Ashinoyu again. This time, we were surprised to see a new corridor leading to the detached rooms, which added more charm and privacy. The room had also been renovated, with futons replaced by beds and a cypress bathtub installed in the bathroom! The staff were as kind as before, and we had a very comfortable stay. However, one disappointing point was that there were tree branches and cobwebs in the private open-air bath of our room. It might be because they are located where you wouldn’t notice unless you use the bath, but that’s why I hope extra care is taken during cleaning. Still, it’s such a wonderful accommodation that I’d love to visit again. Next time, I hope for a multiple night stay!

    I had a very relaxing time.

    We stayed here for a long-awaited trip to Hakone Onsen. The building seems quite old, but it was well-maintained and clean, allowing us to stay comfortably. The Onsen was as wonderful as expected and absolutely satisfying. The meals were also delicious. The staff provided excellent service throughout our stay. We had a relaxing summer vacation and would love to visit again if we have the chance!

    It was a heartwarming hospitality.

    I stayed with my elderly parents, and it was a truly satisfying experience after a long time. Above all, the warm and attentive hospitality of the staff was exceptional. For my elderly parents, we chose the "Wakamatsu" room on the first floor with an Onsen. Although there were a few steps to navigate, the quality of the hot spring water and the spaciousness of the room made our stay very comfortable. While I thought it might be nice to have curtains or similar coverings for the glass windows facing the garden, everything was more than satisfactory. I would love to stay here again in the future!

    Private Space

    Two separate Rooms in the annex were used by two couples. Beyond the sliding doors, the connecting corridor created a private space exclusively for our family, allowing us to enjoy a luxurious and carefree stay. The Rooms were spacious with great views, and while preserving historical charm, the renovated bathroom facilities provided comfort. The meals were just right in both quality and quantity for us. The famous hot spring with abundant mineral deposits warmed us to the core, and we thoroughly enjoyed all options: the large public bath, open-air bath, private open-air bath, and in-room open-air bath. One point of disappointment was that while the TV in Jyokoso was new, the one in Senshintei was outdated and did not support online streaming services. We appreciated your thoughtful gestures during our celebratory occasion and had a pleasant stay. Thank you very much for your hospitality!

    I stayed in a detach...

    I stayed in a detached accommodation overlooking a spacious and beautiful garden. The interior design had a charming atmosphere, and the room was as lovely as shown in the photos. However, someone crossed through the garden in the evening. When I explored the surroundings after check-in, I noticed two accessible spots along an old path and road adjacent to the garden, which raised some concerns about management. The corridor windows overlooking the garden had no curtains or coverings, so while enjoying the wonderful open-air bath with a view of the garden, I couldn't help but worry that someone might pass by—this was unfortunate. Other than that, it is an accommodation that lives up to its reputation. The Onsen water was soft and pleasant. The staff were attentive; they kindly made rice balls from leftover dinner rice for us and provided helpful information about sightseeing spots for the next day.

    Truly the Ideal Accommodation

    I stayed here to celebrate my partner's birthday. Although I occasionally stay at luxury hotels or ryokans, I often feel disappointed due to subpar service or lack of communication among staff (perhaps because of my meticulous nature, but I often feel the experience doesn't match the price). However, this accommodation was truly exceptional and ideal. The heartfelt service, delicious meals, onsen, and the best smoking area in Hakone were simply outstanding. If I really tried to nitpick, there are minor points that could be mentioned, but they are well within acceptable limits. I had been feeling tired recently, so this was a great way to refresh myself. I will definitely visit again. Thank you very much!

    The hot spring water is exceptional.

    It was an exceptional accommodation that exceeded expectations. The quality of the hot spring water was excellent, and the natural source was outstanding, making for a very satisfying stay. The dining area had raised seating where we could relax and enjoy our meals, and being all-inclusive allowed us to fully enjoy alcohol without any worries. Definitely an accommodation I would love to visit again.
