Once again, we thoro...
Once again, we thoroughly enjoyed the high-quality, free-flowing Onsen. In the quiet, peaceful atmosphere, we were able to relax at our leisure. We truly appreciated how accommodating you were with dietary restrictions. It is a little disappointing that the complimentary drinks service at dinner will end in September.

Both the large public bath and the open-air bath had pleasantly soft water, which we really enjoyed. The building and Facility were relaxing, and we had a great time.

A Luxurious Summer Vacation
As our car approached the Ryokan, a staff member came out immediately to welcome us and guided us to the parking area. In the lounge, we enjoyed traditional Japanese sweets and tea while completing check-in and receiving an introduction to the facilities. Even after being shown to our Room, we were given a detailed explanation, and until dinner we relaxed and spent time in the Onsen. Since I had mentioned at the time of Reservation that it was my mother’s birthday, I was surprised to find a birthday cake on the bed with a pink ribbon made from towels. Candles were neatly placed on top as well. After a delicious dinner, they prepared another birthday cake lit with real candle flames, and my mother happily blew them out with tears of joy. The open-air bath attached to our Room was spacious, the Room itself was comfortable, and all staff welcomed us with warm smiles—making it an unforgettable summer holiday. This is an Accommodation I would definitely like to visit again.

A Safe and Secure Accommodation
This Accommodation has become more upscale in recent years and is now a bit of a splurge for me, so I visited this time to take advantage of a great deal. As always, the Onsen was wonderful, the meals were delicious, and the Room was spacious and very comfortable. I was also happy that you remembered my various requests from previous stays. Thank you to all the staff for your hospitality again—I’d love to visit again when I find another opportunity.

The baths are outstanding in both water quality and atmosphere. Service varies by staff member—some are 5-star, others closer to 3-star—so overall I’d rate it a 4. The food was tasty enough, but not at a truly memorable level, so I’d give it 4 stars.

A Sense of Fun
This Accommodation is a good fit for those who can enjoy its nostalgic, retro atmosphere. Since international guests tend to have different activity patterns, we hardly ever ran into anyone in the lounge or the large public bath. The private baths were excellent, and we enjoyed 3 out of the 5. It seems these will soon become paid services, so it’s disappointing that it may be hard to have the chance to use them three times in the future. The open-air bath in our Room was also comfortable, with rich water and a well-adjusted temperature. We understood in advance that it is not barrier-free, but we would like to see an improvement: there is no handrail when getting into the tub. All staff members were very pleasant and kind.

Wonderful accommodation!
Hakone Onsen Hopping I love Hakone, and this time I stayed at this long-established Ryokan. When I arrived at the Accommodation, it was more than an hour before check-in time, but they still welcomed me warmly. Many of the staff are from overseas, but everyone was truly polite, hardworking, and kind—honestly impressive. The Room had a free-flowing Onsen sourced directly from the spring. The water was wonderful, and I couldn’t help wanting to soak again and again. And the meals: a variety of deeply flavorful dishes that were hard to describe. The seasoning was neither too strong nor too light—just right. The dried horse mackerel served at breakfast was nicely fatty and truly delicious. Between the excellent food and the heartfelt service, I was genuinely moved. One small thing I noticed: some international travelers seemed unsure how to eat the dried horse mackerel and ended up leaving it untouched. It feels like such a waste when it’s so good—if it could be made easier to eat or served with a bit more guidance, it might reduce waste and bring more smiles to overseas guests. Also, if possible, could you improve the Wi-Fi? It didn’t work at all inside my Room. If it becomes usable, I’d really appreciate being able to stay while also working remotely.

The Accommodation is...
The Accommodation is in a very quiet setting, and the Onsen—fed directly from the source—was truly impressive, including the private open-air bath, the large public bath, and the semi-open-air bath in the Room. Seeing natural mineral deposits floating in the tub made it clear that this is genuine free-flowing hot spring water, which was wonderful. Seasonally, spring is lovely, and autumn—especially during the fall foliage season—feels exceptional.

Excellent hot spring water quality.
This was my fourth stay. The Onsen water quality is excellent, so I always look forward to the baths. Of course, I’m always satisfied with the meals as well. This time, it was my first stay at Matsuzakaya in a while, and I stayed in a Room with an open-air bath. The Room was clean, and with the all-inclusive plan the beer was delicious—I had to hold back so I wouldn’t spoil my appetite for dinner. The private family bath and the large public bath were also much more convenient than before. I used the large public bath in the morning and was able to enjoy it fully on my own. I’d like to visit again for the Onsen and the food.

Enjoy nature, free-flowing hot springs, and warm hospitality.
My first visit to Hakone in decades. I stayed at Matsuzakaya Honten, an Accommodation filled with elegance and tradition. From the warm welcome at the entrance to the farewell, everything was impeccable. The staff were wonderful—always smiling and greeting us. In particular, I was amazed at how fluent the international staff were in Japanese; it felt completely natural. All-you-can-drink alcohol and soft drinks were included, and both dinner and breakfast were delicious. Especially memorable was the grilled dried horse mackerel at breakfast—it was wonderfully rich and flavorful. Even in these times when costs are rising, I could really feel the Accommodation’s efforts. Thank you very much. P.S. Thank you as well to the staff member who guided me to my Room and served the meals (I’m sorry I can’t recall your name). Please do not send direct mail or letters to my home address.

Everything was great. The only thing that would make it perfect is a grab bar to hold onto when getting into the bathtub.
The Onsen water was excellent in both the large public bath and the in-Room bath. It’s rare to find a true free-flowing hot spring with no added water. The Facility also had a nice retro feel. The only thing is that we have trouble with our legs and back, so we would appreciate handrails for getting into the tub. We were very satisfied with both the meals and the service. Next time, we’d like to try the private bath as well.

Accommodation where you can fully enjoy the Onsen
I visited for the first time in six years. The interior had been renovated, and the large public bath had a lovely retro feel. - Onsen The open-air bath in the Room was spacious, and the water quality was excellent. I’m not good with very hot Onsen, but I was able to add water to lower the temperature. The large public bath was also spacious and felt clean. Only bath towels were provided, so it would have been nice to have face towels as well. - Room Overall, it felt quite dark. I would have liked more indirect lighting around the tea corner by the entrance and in the Room. The bed was very comfortable, and I slept soundly. Outside the window was enclosed by a wall, but it was landscaped as a garden so it didn’t feel cramped. I could soak in the Onsen while listening to birdsong, which was very relaxing. The bidet function didn’t respond well, which lowered my rating. - Meals The portions were just right, and the tempura and mountain vegetable rice were delicious. One staff member was from overseas, and some difficult words and ingredient pronunciations were hard to catch, so I compared them with the menu as we went along. We enjoyed chatting about their home country, which made for a fun time. - Service All staff were pleasant and courteous. Many guests were also international guests, and they handled everything very well. The complimentary drinks in the lounge had a great variety, which was a big plus. Overall, since this is a Ryokan in Hakone it felt a bit pricey, but being able to fully enjoy such high-quality Onsen made it well worth it. I’d like to stay again if I have another chance.

Everything was great.
I stayed at Senshintei. Thinking I might not visit Hakone again, I made a Reservation hoping for a great Accommodation. Everything was excellent. I was especially impressed by the staff member who assisted us during meals. Whenever I thought, “I’d like some water” or “I’d like some tea,” they responded right away without me having to ask. It felt like they anticipated exactly what we needed, which surprised me in a good way—they must always be watching the timing. Thank you very much.

A perfect score out of 100.
In a word: outstanding. It’s rare to find an Accommodation where the Onsen water quality, the Facility (guest rooms), the cuisine, and the hospitality are all truly satisfying—but as an Onsen enthusiast who stays at Onsen Accommodations more than 50 nights a year, I’m still thrilled after discovering this Ryokan at a genuinely moving level. Given its long history and reputation, I’d always thought “someday I’d like to visit,” but it exceeded my expectations. With countless Onsen Ryokan and Hotels across Japan—far more than anyone could ever visit—I usually focus on trying new places and rarely feel the need to return unless it’s exceptional. This one is a definite repeat, and I’ll confidently recommend it to friends. Also… The staff communication and coordination were excellent and flawless.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Onsen.
We were able to relax and unwind, enjoying both the large public bath and the in-Room bath at our leisure. The food was also very delicious. The building has a sense of history, which we appreciated, but there were also some aspects that felt a bit inconvenient. The service was excellent.

A foreign visitor entered the private garden of my room.
The staff’s hospitality was exceptional; above all, that’s where I felt the greatest value. I was surprised when a foreign guest entered the private garden of my room while I was bathing. A “No Entry” sign is needed.

The Onsen is amazing.
The Onsen is as wonderful as ever. I think I will return again just for this bath. Since it is an old building, there are some inconveniences such as stairs and slightly cold corridors, but I visit knowing that. It is disappointing that the crane taxidermy from the former Kakumeikan and other valuable exhibits are no longer there, but with the change in management, I accept it as part of the times. All of the staff were very kind and pleasant, and I had a comfortable stay. I think the meals are average. Considering the price, it felt a bit disappointing.

Watch your step on the stairs.
If you’re expecting a traditional long-established Ryokan, you may find that the well-organized service and the quality of the meals feel a little different from what you imagined. There were no particular problems, but I felt more at ease when the front desk was staffed by someone calm with strong decision-making skills. Overall, it seemed like many younger staff members were working hard. For those staying for business: during our three-day stay, the Wi‑Fi connection was unstable. That said, this is just my personal impression and I didn’t have any major complaints. Thank you for your hospitality.

A room with an open-air bath and a garden
The Onsen quality and the abundant hot water were excellent. The service and the thoughtful hospitality of all staff were also outstanding. This time we stayed in a Room with a private open-air Onsen bath, and the open-air bath had a wonderful atmosphere. It was located beside the private garden for the Room and connected by a wooden veranda at the same level, making it very enjoyable to soak while looking at the garden or gazing at the stars in the night sky. The Onsen water flowed continuously, so we could bathe anytime we felt like it, and we could fine-tune the temperature by adding hot water. The large public bath was also excellent. In particular, I loved the design of the large public bath straight ahead from the lounge (on the left). Highly recommended Accommodation.

Matsuzakaya Accommodation Review
My spouse and I made a weekday Reservation at Tsurumeikan. Overall, we were very satisfied, and we’re glad we stayed. That said, since we were asked to leave a Review on IKYU and you aim to further improve your service, I’ll share some points I noticed as well. ■Room A retro yet clean Room. The bed was comfortable, and the kotatsu was a nice touch. Although it faced the parking lot, noise wasn’t an issue, and the view was lovely. ■Service Given the times, there were many overseas staff members. However, everyone spoke Japanese well and treated us with a spirit of hospitality that felt even beyond what you might expect in Japan. ■Onsen The indoor public bath is dimly lit and relaxing. Above all, because there are multiple private open-air baths available for reservation, it never felt crowded. There isn’t much of a view, but it truly feels like an Onsen in nature—wonderful. ■Facility The building and Japanese-style rooms have been around for many years, but rather than feeling outdated, they convey a sense of history and dignity. Perhaps because of that—and of course thanks to the staff’s hospitality—we felt an unusual sense of comfort and could truly unwind. ■Meals We had both dinner and breakfast; everything was delicious. The yuba in particular was excellent. Also (in a good way), the flavors were generally light so we could really taste the ingredients. ■Two points I noticed We were first-time guests but were properly welcomed and checked in. However, when returning guests checked in next to us shortly afterward, it seemed they received an even warmer welcome along with more proactive suggestions (drinks, sweets/snacks, meal times). I understand that loyal guests are important and should be valued—and that some differentiation is natural—but it might be better to offer that level of special attention where new guests won’t notice. At the dining area, we were seated near the entrance at tables facing a passageway everyone uses. Because there was no partitioning between seats/areas within view from this walkway (e.g., sliding doors or bamboo blinds), other guests arriving later could constantly see us while passing by. We would have appreciated some kind of screening for privacy. As mentioned at the beginning though: overall we were very satisfied. We would like to stay again. My rating reflects my expectations for continued improvement.

We were very satisfied.
This was my first stay. The Accommodation has a rich history and was wonderful, and every staff member was cheerful and pleasant. I stayed with my elementary school-aged child, and we enjoyed the charming play area as well. The meals were delicious and thoughtfully prepared, and the attentive service made dining very comfortable. I would definitely like to stay again on my next trip to Hakone.

Experience an authentic natural hot spring source
I stayed from the night before to cheer on the Hakone Ekiden. What stood out most were (1) the private open-air bath, (2) the attentive service from the staff, (3) the historic character of the building, and (4) the quality of the cuisine. Regarding (1), I felt that the water in the private open-air bath left my skin noticeably smoother. The weather was great, so it was especially pleasant and relaxing. For (2), whenever I had an issue, they responded sincerely and thoughtfully. In particular, since it was during the Hakone Ekiden period and taxis were hard to secure, they contacted several companies starting at 7:00 a.m. and successfully arranged a Reservation for me—I’m truly grateful. As for (4), both the meat and fish dishes were carefully prepared creative cuisine, and I enjoyed every bite. I would love to visit again if I have another opportunity.

Excellent Hospitality
This was my first time staying here, and it became a truly memorable trip. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, creating a very comfortable atmosphere. The accommodation was exceptionally clean and full of charm, with all-inclusive drinks available, allowing for a relaxing time in the lounge. The baths at the accommodation were outstanding; both the private baths and large public baths were so enjoyable that I wanted to use them multiple times. Our room had an open-air bath, which allowed us to enjoy it anytime during the night or morning. The "Kumoi" room was a corner room where the morning sunlight poured in beautifully, offering an incredibly luxurious experience. This is definitely an accommodation I would love to visit again! Considering the price and service provided, I think it's very reasonable—highly recommended!

【Perfect for Families】Enjoy 360 Years of History and the "Miraculous Beauty Hot Spring" with Your Loved Ones
We stayed as a couple with our 2-year-old, and this is the No.1 accommodation we've ever experienced, both domestically and internationally! It was an experience that truly made us think, "We absolutely want to come back." Impressive Onsen Quality For onsen lovers, the richness of the water is immediately apparent! The sight of "Yunohana" (mineral deposits) floating abundantly and the constant overflow of hot spring water is breathtaking. After returning home, my skin became clear and radiant, with blemishes disappearing—proof of its effectiveness. The lingering sulfur scent was also pleasant. Since we stayed in a room with an open-air bath, we could enjoy this exceptional onsen multiple times without worry even with a small child. Hospitality Even though we hadn't mentioned it beforehand, they noticed during check-in that my husband's birthday was near and prepared a dessert plate and gift to celebrate him. My husband was thrilled—and even thought I had arranged it myself! Perfect for Families with Children The thoughtful touches for children were heartwarming: kid-friendly meals, Anpanman furikake seasoning packets, morning yogurt options—all greatly appreciated. They even provided children's yukata starting from 80cm sizes; seeing our child in one made for wonderful memories. The toy area was well-equipped too—our 2-year-old loved it! Dining took place in private tatami rooms where shoes could be removed for a relaxed atmosphere. Blocks were lent to our child during meals—a very helpful gesture. A Stay Steeped in History The traditional architecture adds charm; while hallways can feel slightly chilly in winter, it enhances the ambiance. Gathering around kerosene heaters or irori hearths as a family creates moments you can't find at modern hotels. Key areas like changing rooms are equipped with modern amenities such as floor heating—cleanliness and comfort are assured here too. Staff dressed in hakama further added to the authentic Japanese experience. Access Tips During peak tourist seasons, buses or taxis from Motohakone can get very crowded. Direct access from Hakone-Yumoto or visiting by private car is recommended for smoother travel. Additional Thoughts While more displays of historical books or artifacts throughout the facility would deepen immersion into its history further, overall this place left us thinking: "Could there possibly be any better accommodation in Japan?"

Top-level accommodation in Japan!
From check-in to check-out, the service provided was exceptionally attentive. Overall, this accommodation (including hotels) ranks among the top I have ever stayed at! Each staff member is well-trained and offers hospitality that makes me proud as a Japanese. The room combines history and elegance with modern facilities, ensuring a comfortable stay. The onsen left my skin feeling incredibly smooth, making moisturizers like Vaseline unnecessary during my stay. The meals were absolutely delicious, highlighting the quality of the ingredients, and the semi-private dining room we used was thoughtfully designed. While the pricing reflects this level of service, it felt entirely worth it for such an enriching experience! I was also amazed by the high quality of amenities provided. I will definitely return again!

Enjoyed Ashinoyu Ons...
Enjoyed Ashinoyu Onsen to the fullest. The historical yet modern Japanese-style large bath and the private open-air bath with a view of the starry sky were delightful. Our room was on the second floor, so we used an indoor bath instead of an open-air one, but it felt semi-open as there were no windows, making it very pleasant. Early in the morning, I filled the bath and enjoyed watching the garden and distant mountains change colors as the sun rose. Being a sulfur spring, maintenance must be challenging, but being able to soak in Onsen anytime in your room is wonderful. Despite being a luxurious accommodation, it has a nostalgic atmosphere reminiscent of traditional Onsen Ryokan from long ago—a perfect place to spend quiet and relaxing moments.

It was excellent.
I stayed with my parents, making it a group of three. All three of us agreed that this was undoubtedly the best accommodation we have ever stayed at, and we were extremely satisfied. The spacious room, well-equipped amenities, free drinks, delicious meals, and the incredibly kind staff—all aspects were exceptional. The onsen was filled with mineral deposits and had a delightful sulfur aroma that truly felt like an authentic onsen experience. The changing rooms were impeccably clean, making it very comfortable to use. We reserved the private baths twice at our preferred times and used the room's bath as well for a total of five times during our stay. It was also thoughtful to have bath towels available in both the large public bath and private baths. Although there wasn’t a fire lit in the irori (traditional hearth) room when we visited, there were many nostalgic toys from old times which made it very enjoyable. During meals, drinks were all-you-can-drink; beverages were also provided in both the lounge and refrigerator—allowing us to spend an incredibly luxurious time. We were amazed by its 360 years of history! The valuable furnishings added charm to our stay. We absolutely want to visit again someday. Thank you so much!

Two Concerns
After retirement, I often travel but always struggle with choosing destinations and accommodations. Popular spots for inbound tourists tend to be expensive and noisy, so I usually avoid them. Hakone is an extremely popular destination both domestically and internationally, especially influenced by inbound tourism. I was concerned about whether I could spend time quietly or if cultural differences might cause discomfort. To address this concern, I chose Matsuzakaya Honten, thinking that its scale might make it less suitable for large group stays. Although there were a few international guests, they were surprisingly quiet and respectful, allowing me to relax completely without any issues. My second concern was about noise. Traditional wooden buildings often have weaknesses in terms of air conditioning and sound insulation. While the hallways were understandably cold during winter, the room and lounge were warm and comfortable enough to enjoy my stay fully. However, regarding noise—my room was on the first floor, so I worried about how much noise would depend on the guests staying directly above me. There were occasional sounds from upstairs but nothing too bothersome until around 10 AM when it became unusually noisy as cleaning seemed to start after the upstairs guests checked out. The sound of vacuuming? Rolling noises on the floor? Footsteps thumping—it all disrupted what could have been a peaceful morning. Despite being eligible for IKYU Diamond Member late check-out benefits, it wasn’t relaxing anymore due to these noises; hence I decided to check out earlier than planned. The Onsen atmosphere, meals, service quality from all staff members who worked diligently—all of these aspects exceeded expectations except for this one issue with noise during cleaning hours which left me slightly disappointed. I understand that rooms need thorough cleaning within limited timeframes; however perhaps prioritizing other vacant rooms first or implementing measures considerate towards downstairs guests would enhance overall guest satisfaction further!
