    Room of the Sixteenth-Night Moon

    I made a Reservation six months in advance, choosing only the Izayoi Room—and it was absolutely the right choice. Right in front of the living room was an open-air bath, and since it was a warm day, we opened the large doors wide and relaxed while watching the steam rise and taking in the Aso mountain range. From the open-air bath, we enjoyed everything—the blue sky, sunset, starry sky, moonlight bathing, and even a morning moon when we woke up. The view alone was more than enough to satisfy us. The Shuttle Service to Yuakari was wonderful as well, and for dinner the basashi (horse sashimi), Kumamoto Akaushi beef, and Kagoshima Kuroge Wagyu were tender and beautifully marbled—we even had seconds. Breakfast was delicately seasoned; the nikujaga (meat-and-potato stew) and flounder sashimi were especially delicious. I gave four stars for service because check-in and check-out were a little disappointing. Other than that, the service was excellent, and our Room attendant was thoughtful, kind, and truly wonderful. This is a one-of-a-kind Accommodation I would definitely like to visit again. Thank you very much!

    This was the best Universal room I’ve ever stayed in.

    Because I have a family member who uses a wheelchair, we have stayed in several universal Rooms, and even for me as someone who does not use a wheelchair, the Room was designed to be very relaxing. The toilet in particular was so stylish—I’ve never seen such a chic universal toilet before. Best of all, the Room included a dining room where we could listen to records, which made things feel much easier and more comfortable when considering wheelchair movement. They also installed grab bars in the bath, and my family member was delighted to be able to enjoy an Onsen bath for the first time in years—thank you very much. However, considering the price, it would be worth reviewing the amenity brands and included items, as that would make our next stay something to look forward to even more.

    The Facility is good, but the food is terrible.

    I stayed here for my partner’s birthday, but I don’t think we will return. As others have written in their Reviews, the food felt more like izakaya-level cooking. The fried items were said to be freshly fried, but they were slightly cold and soggy, and it was the first time I’ve ever been served meat at a Ryokan in this price range that I couldn’t bite through. We chose the restaurant instead of in-Room dining because we were told hot dishes would be served there, but it didn’t feel like there was any advantage. Breakfast was also made up of small side dishes that felt like something homemade at a family house, and it didn’t make me want to eat. As for service, drinks were not served before the meal, there was almost no explanation of the dishes at breakfast, and staff were chatting in areas visible to guests—overall, it was not at all satisfactory for a Ryokan in this price range. However, the baths were wonderful as reputed. I personally preferred the Yoimachi open-air bath over the private Tenku bath, and the indoor bath was also spacious and very nice. That’s what makes it truly disappointing—the baths are so good.

    The Room and Facility are excellent, but the meals were very disappointing.

    I’ve wanted to stay here for a long time, and I finally made it happen this time. The Room was truly wonderful—an uplifting, beautiful Room that will stay in my memory for the rest of my life. That’s why the low quality of the meals stood out even more, which was very disappointing. The Reviews said the food was delicious, so I think I expected too much. The presentation looked good, but the taste… I’m sorry to say it was on par with an izakaya. An ajillo suddenly appeared in the middle of a kaiseki-style course, and I couldn’t understand the concept (if it had been delicious, it probably wouldn’t have been an issue...). The service was decent, but far from what you’d expect at a top-tier Ryokan. If only the meals were improved, this is an Accommodation I would consider visiting again.

    As expected

    It was a wonderful Stays as expected. We appreciate your accommodating our last-minute changes on the day. We felt that you were doing your best to meet the guests' requests with limited staff. Also, we were able to spend a comfortable time with the Facility and amenities that catered to our needs. The hot spring illumination was also beautiful. Thank you to all the staff.

    It was a series of surprises.

    Entering through a black-painted gate into a building reminiscent of a ninja mansion, guest rooms and bathing facilities were scattered like a camp within the premises. Both the Sky Bath and the open-air bath in the Room were unlike anything I had experienced before. It was a wonderful setting, but in a few years, it might be difficult except for the barrier-free Room. The meals were also splendid.

    Travel-Loving Dallas

    We arrived earlier than planned, and thank you for welcoming us so kindly. The Room was exactly as expected and we were very satisfied. In particular, we felt the in-room open-air bath was the best in Japan. The view was wonderful, and we were able to spend our time feeling truly relaxed and pampered. We would love to see the scenery again during the snowy season, when it must be quite different. The meals were very generous—we ended up gaining weight. It was a truly luxurious day. Thank you to all of the staff.

    It is an Onsen where...

    It is an Onsen where you can spend a quiet time. However, the private open-air bath in the sky has many stairs and is dangerous in the dark. Also, since it is an open-air bath, there are many insects, and I found a large centipede, so I came out quickly. I especially have bad legs (knees), so I thought I shouldn't have gone. I think the bath in the Room is sufficient. There are also many steps at the entrance and inside the Room. It might be okay for young people.

    Gorgeous traditional Japanese house with an amazing open-air bath and surprisingly spacious Room!

    A room with a modern design in a high-ceilinged space featuring impressive beams from a relocated traditional house, a spacious indoor bath, and a room-attached open-air bath that can accommodate several people are truly surprising. The dining area in the Room has a sunken kotatsu table with an irori, adding a touch of charm. One of the two free private baths is an open-air bath at the top of the property with a great view, and the other is a cave bath, both guaranteed to elevate your spirits. The cuisine is elegant, substantial, and delicious. It was an experience worth trying at least once, truly remarkable.

    One of my favorite S...

    One of my favorite Stays, this time I stayed in the "Yoimachi" Room, which has an open-air rock bath. The excitement of going down the stairs from the Room to the open-air bath was very nice. The open-air bath was more spacious than I expected, and I was able to relax and feel very comfortable. I would like to visit again. Thank you very much.

    Good Ryokan

    As per the review, the staff's welcome at the gate, smooth check-in, and attentive service by the staff in charge were impressive. We moved to the room by cart and arrived after climbing a few stairs. The location offers a great view... if the weather is good... unfortunately, it wasn't. It was a space where you could enjoy an extraordinary experience and relax, and before we knew it, two hours had passed while having a meal and soaking in the footbath. The timing of the meal service was impeccable, truly befitting a first-class experience. The only downside was that the bedroom had a musty smell? It felt different from other rooms, and the bedroom door was difficult to open from the inside. Despite this, it ranks among the top-class ryokans where I've stayed for over 150,000 yen. I believe the service provided by the staff in charge was the best.

    Because it is a wonderful Stays, I dare to express my impressions.

    I think it was a wonderful Stays. It took about 7 hours of travel time by connecting the Shinkansen, airplane, and rental car, and the Accommodation Fee was not cheap, but it was well worth it. Especially the dinner was excellent, and I thought it was the best among the Properties I have stayed at in my lifetime. Additionally, the service from the person in charge was good. I am grateful for the consideration given to my wife who accompanied me. On the other hand, there were some things that caught my eye, so I dare to express my opinion. 1. The Room and Facility had many steps, and I was constantly uneasy about whether I might trip and get injured. 2. I used the private open-air bath at the top at night, but since the weather was such that I couldn't see the stars, it was so dark that I felt scared. I understand that there is no lighting based on the concept of stargazing, but I thought it would be nice to have lighting installed and let the guests choose whether to turn it on or not. 3. While walking down the slope from the private open-air bath to the Room, an electric cart came up from around the curve without lights, which startled me. I think it is necessary to have headlights as a safety measure. In any case, while I understand the concept of the Stays, I felt there were elements that could cause guests to get injured regardless of age group. If a guest gets injured, the stay itself would be ruined. I felt that consideration for safety is necessary.

    There were many points of concern.

    ・The initial reservation date was affected by a special warning, and transportation was cut off. It was good to receive an email from the Property stating that cancellations due to the typhoon would be free, but when I called the contact number provided, I was told it was the reservation center and that the Property would call back. Despite calling during my lunch break, I received no response for over 30 minutes. I also emailed the Property but received no reply. I called again, but the reservation center said they couldn't decide on the cancellation fee and advised me to email the Property. I informed them that I had emailed but received no response and was waiting for further contact. I was calling within a limited time, and other Properties responded immediately, so I felt quite distrustful at this point. ・I requested a pickup, but they didn't arrive even after the scheduled time, so I called again. Once more, I was connected to the reservation center, and they told me to wait as they would contact the Property. I felt uneasy because the previous night's Property had arrived five minutes early. ・There were water stains in the toilet of the Room. I thought it might be a scratch, but when I wiped it just in case, the stain disappeared, making me question the cleanliness. ・I reserved the cave bath at 3 PM and went there shortly after, only to find a large number of unfolded towels on the shelf where bath towels were stored, which was surprising. Additionally, there were no face towels, hair ties, or caps. The sky bath had caps, so I wondered why the cave bath didn't. ・The amenities seemed to be male-oriented, with a variety of items but including earplugs, brushes, and combs typical of a Business Hotel. The skincare products were in bottle form, similar to those from a manufacturer that often provides all-in-one gels in Business Hotels. ・The hairdryer was a higher-end model commonly found in Business Hotels. Unlike Refa or Repronizer, it left my hair frizzy. ・There were no green tea leaves in the Room. I was surprised because, in all-inclusive Properties, warm tea is usually served during meals even if you order oolong tea. Those who don't drink warm tea might not mind, but this was the first time for a Property of this class. ・There were no bathrobes, and when I inquired, they brought a cotton gown. It was the first time I stayed at a Property with an open-air bath in the Room that didn't provide bathrobes. ・The meals were delicious, but Properties of the same rank are generally delicious. The cypress bath and open-air bath in the Room are attractive, and the service is polite, but I felt it was primarily Property-first. It's not the fault of the reservation center or the staff who served the Room. It might be a harsh opinion, but I hope it will be helpful for the future.

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

    I couldn’t choose because only one Room was available, but the Room, the meals, and the bath were all excellent. Next time, I’d like to stay in a different Room as well. Thank you very much.

    I am in my 50s and travel around from Okinawa to Hokkaido with my husband and friends once or twice a month. I stay at various accommodations, from resort hotels to hot spring inns, but I was surprised at how simple the breakfast was for this price range, and above all, how ordinary the taste was. It was extremely disappointing, especially since the dinner was so wonderful. Although there were various dishes served in small bowls, the pickles were quite ordinary (store-bought?), the omelet was ordinary, the salad was ordinary, and even the salmon grilled over charcoal was quite ordinary. The dinner was delicious, so what was the reason for such a difference? It all seemed like hastily prepared side dishes. The dessert, however, had a handmade feel and was very delicious. Also, maybe I missed it, but I was shocked to find that you can smoke in the room these days... Of course, it seemed to be only on the terrace, but I was astonished when I saw the black ashtray. I had high expectations for this dream inn in Kurokawa Onsen, which is hard to reach from the Kanto region, but it was not a completely satisfying trip. However, the staff member who attended to us was excellent in terms of distance and timing, and the bath in the room was also wonderful, as expected from Kurokawa's hot springs. Also, the floor of the changing room in the private bath in the sky is extremely slippery when wet! Please consider placing a bath mat or changing the floor material. I rarely write reviews because I think everyone has different feelings about accommodations and meals, but I was so astonished that I decided to write. If you can serve dinner at such a high level, I think it would be wonderful if you could put a little more effort into breakfast. I would like to stay in other rooms as well, so I will visit again someday.
