    Simply wonderful.

    I’ve stayed at many Accommodations, but this was the first one that felt absolutely flawless! I fell in love at first sight with the stunning rock bath scenery on YouTube and made a Reservation for the Yoimachi Room. The open-air bath was spacious, and the view from it was so breathtaking it nearly brought me to tears. The hot spring water was silky-smooth, and my skin felt amazing! The food was also delicious, and even the rice tasted exceptional. The nikujaga served at breakfast was so good that I’d love to ask—if you don’t mind—whether the soy sauce you use is light soy sauce or a type used mainly in Kyushu. The Room was wonderfully quiet as well, and I could truly relax. I definitely want to come back for a special occasion. Next year, I’ll visit one of your sister properties too.

    A flawless, top-tier Accommodation

    It was an exceptional stay filled with hospitality from start to finish. The Room atmosphere, the Onsen, the food, and the staff’s thoughtful care—everything exceeded our expectations. The price is not cheap, but we enjoyed a stay that truly matched the cost—if anything, it felt like a bargain for what we received. This is an Accommodation we absolutely want to return to. Next time, we’d love to visit in winter. My wife and son were both very satisfied! My son has extremely sensitive skin and usually gets itchy or irritated after using an Onsen due to the water quality, but with the water here he had none of those issues at all. To be honest, after the earthquake I hesitated about whether it was okay to travel, but I decided to go in hopes of contributing even a little to Kumamoto—a place that supported me when I was a student—and we ended up having a truly wonderful vacation. We will definitely come again!! Thank you very much!

    I stayed here on a sunny weekend in July. They opened the main gate as if welcoming a returning warlord back to the castle, and we stepped inside. The luxurious Japanese-modern space, the valley view with the sound of the river, an indoor bath so spacious it felt like a large public bath, a gently silky open-air bath with free-flowing natural hot spring water, and an array of dishes that delighted both the eyes and the palate—every one of my five senses was truly soothed. This is an Accommodation I would love to visit again. P.S. On my way home I realized I had left something behind and called; it arrived by the next day. Even after returning home, I’m still touched by their thoughtful care.

    Wonderful! We’ll definitely be back.

    We stayed at this Accommodation and were satisfied with everything. The luxurious L-shaped bath that extends from the Room to the outside is exceptional. The food, in particular, is delicious! If I may ask one thing, when moving guests’ private cars, please do not change the air-conditioning settings. When I got back into my car, it was set to LO with the fan on full blast and roaring. Thank you for your understanding. We look forward to visiting again.

    Tsukikōju, after a long time

    This was my first time back at Gekkoki in five years. The price had increased to about double compared to back then, so I had high expectations. With a new owner, it felt like profit was prioritized over hospitality. I was happy to be able to see again the staff member who has been there since those days. The Facility was unchanged, and it felt like the company and themselves came before the guests. It was truly disappointing.

    I’ve stayed at various well-known Ryokan in Kyushu, and this one especially felt like a Ryokan that truly focuses on its Onsen. The in-room bath was spacious, and the private baths were luxuriously designed as well—I was very satisfied. Highly recommended for Onsen lovers. Since it was summer, there were times when insects appeared in the baths or the Room, which is understandable given the nature-surrounded location. However, we were advised to leave the doors between the indoor bath and open-air bath open at night, and during that time quite a lot of insects came in, which was disappointing. Aside from that time period, I stayed comfortably without any particular issues. The food was also excellent, and I’m grateful they responded flexibly to our requests. They also showed care for my daughter, and their thoughtful attention to detail made me very happy. In addition, the service from the foreign staff member who served our meals was outstanding—their smile and attentiveness left a strong impression. Thanks to them, we had a very pleasant stay. This is a Ryokan I can recommend to anyone who wants to relax and fully enjoy an Onsen!

    Luxury indoors, surrounded by nature outdoors.

    We had originally booked a different Room, but thanks to the Hotel’s kindness we were upgraded to “Tamawa,” a newly built private annex. It was outstanding. First, the garden. In addition to a spacious open-air Onsen bath, there is a stylish barrel sauna and cold plunge, plus reclining loungers set beneath a large persimmon tree. Located at the highest point of Kurokawa Onsen, the garden faces a deep valley—so even if you cycle between sauna, cold plunge, and lounger in your birthday suit, the only “peeping” you might get is from a moon bear. As you reset in the sauna and gaze across the valley at the lush mountainside beyond, you can truly feel that it’s worth traveling all this way into Kyushu’s remote countryside. Back in the Room, pure luxury awaits. A large water basin filled with ice was stocked with sparkling wine, local craft beer, and plenty of soft drinks—all complimentary—and the glasses were Riedel. The welcome sweets arrived on Royal Copenhagen plates, and even the towels were Imabari. The bathrobes were especially impressive: many luxury international hotels provide heavy, stiff robes (perhaps made for overseas tastes), which my wife usually avoids. Here they were Imabari—soft and light—so even she happily wore one. Dining is just one door away within the annex suite area, and there is also a dedicated kitchen next to it—so freshly made dishes are served hot and at an excellent pace. During dinner, dedicated staff take care of everything while keeping things lively with pleasant conversation. The main meat course is grilled right in front of you on a built-in hearth at your table and served at exactly the best moment. In an era dominated by buffet-style service due to rising labor costs, this level of hospitality was genuinely moving. There are many more unique highlights—an indoor footbath enjoyed while watching a large-screen TV, an incredibly extensive breakfast selection—but I’ll stop here due to space. If you’re interested, it takes about 2 hours from Haneda Airport and nearly another 2 hours from Fukuoka Airport—but I encourage you to see it for yourself. It’s far away, but I doubt many people would regret making the trip.

    Enjoy a quiet, luxurious stay in our new wing, “Tamawa.”

    We stayed in the new wing at Gekkouju Kurokawa on this trip. Perhaps because it was a brand-new Room, the entire guest space felt special, and everything—the spaciousness, quiet atmosphere, Onsen, and sauna—was wonderfully luxurious. We were able to forget about everyday life and truly relax. Being able to enjoy the Onsen and sauna in our Room whenever we wanted was especially appealing. During our stay, it felt like we spent almost all our waking hours either in the Onsen or the sauna. Each dish was carefully prepared and delightful both visually and in taste. Being able to enjoy our meal at a leisurely pace in such a calm setting also became a very fond memory. Gekkouju is an Accommodation where not only the building, Rooms, and Onsen are outstanding—the warmth of the staff is what leaves the strongest impression. There are many luxury Onsen Accommodations and luxury Hotels, but what makes you want to come back is not just the Facility—it’s also the thoughtful hospitality of those who welcome you. Once again, this was an extremely satisfying stay filled with Gekkouju’s signature tranquility and luxury, along with warm hospitality. We would love to visit again as a couple.

    I’d love to stay here again!

    We were extremely satisfied with this Accommodation. We even enjoyed in-room dining while soaking our feet in the Onsen foot bath—a true luxury. The meal, served in a charming setting by the hearth, was outstanding. The staff were also very courteous and kindly listened to our questions (such as sightseeing), and even showed us a handmade guidebook. On our way home, we made another Reservation for Golden Week. It was a trip with my best friend, but next time we’d like to come with family.

    I have stayed here s...

    I have stayed here several times, and each time I look forward to staying in a different Room. Each Room has its own unique open-air bath, and this time the cave bath was especially enjoyable. The water was always at the perfect temperature no matter when I went in, so I soaked many times. The cuisine was also visually beautiful, with seasonal ingredients and presentation, and everything tasted excellent. I know it’s a signature dish, but I always look forward to the “Amakusa Daio Sawani-style soup,” and it was truly delicious again this time. The service was also very attentive and pleasant. It was wonderfully relaxing for both body and mind—thank you very much. I’m already looking forward to deciding which Room to stay in next time.

    A wonderful accommodation that soothes and relaxes you

    We stayed in two Rooms for a family trip. My mother uses a wheelchair, and each time we moved to the dining area, the staff prepared a ramp for us, which must have been a lot of work. Even so, everyone helped us promptly and with warm smiles, and it truly made all the difference. The lavish meals were as beautiful as they were delicious, and the spacious open-air bath was wonderfully relaxing. We were able to enjoy this special getaway experience together without hesitation thanks to the staff’s thoughtful care. It was a lovely Accommodation that left us feeling comforted and refreshed.

    An Accommodation with breathtaking views and exceptional hospitality

    This stay was truly wonderful. Because the Ryokan is located on a hill, the views from the property and our Room were simply breathtaking. In particular, soaking in the open-air bath at night while gazing up at a sky full of stars was unforgettable and deeply relaxing. The Room was very spacious, with well-equipped Facility amenities, making our stay extremely comfortable. The private open-air bath in the guest room was also generously sized, allowing us to fully enjoy the Onsen at a leisurely pace. We were especially impressed by the thoughtful and warm hospitality throughout our stay, including the Shuttle Service from the Kurokawa Onsen bus stop. When our onward Shuttle Service to the next Accommodation had not yet been confirmed, a staff member proactively contacted them on our behalf and arranged both luggage delivery and transportation. Thanks to their support, we could relax without any worries, and we are truly grateful. The meals were also excellent—delicate yet satisfying in portion size—and we could really feel the chef’s dedication and skill. We were completely satisfied in every way. We would love to return and can confidently recommend this Accommodation.

    Kurokawa Onsen—A Dream Destination Gekkouju—A Place to Long For

    About ten years ago, we planned a trip to Kurokawa Onsen, but had to give up when my wife came down with the flu. Since then, Kurokawa Onsen has been our forever dream destination. This time, that wish finally came true, and we made a Reservation at Gekkouju. As the new year began and the trip drew closer, I couldn’t contain my excitement. We flew from Osaka to Kumamoto Airport and drove a rental car through magnificent Aso before arriving—into a completely different world. First of all, the Room was outstanding. We were amazed by the private open-air bath with abundant free-flowing natural hot spring water. The furnishings were perfectly chosen, and the staff member who guided us showed truly top-class hospitality. Dinner was elegant and delicious from the very start. With one exquisite dish after another, happiness just kept growing. The drinks were excellent as well. After that, we soaked slowly in the bath under a sky full of stars. It was wonderful to enjoy such deep sleep for the first time in ages. The next morning also began with a bath, and we also had the chance to use the cave bath. Breakfast was completely satisfying—both taste and portion size were flawless. It felt like I was living in a dream. Everything—from facilities to service—was beyond reproach. We’re already looking forward to our second stay at Gekkouju.

    Is this intended for inbound travelers who aren’t familiar with genuine Japanese hospitality?

    I can’t understand why the Review ratings are so high. The Facility is outdated, and the partition door for the in-room open-air bath was covered in moss. Some outdoor light bulbs were out, and it was obvious at a glance that maintenance had not been done. The meals were especially terrible—the smell of the meat and fish was very strong, and I felt they might be using old ingredients. As someone who loves traveling and has stayed at many different types of Accommodation, this felt like one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had. Since this is an Accommodation classified as high-end, I would like them to take pride in it and provide services and facilities that match that standard.

    Poor ventilation dur...

    Poor ventilation during meals made my eyes hurt. There were buttons different from those shown in the Facility guide, and in a Room where guests are expected to remove their shoes, there was only a mat and suitcases were placed directly on it—overall, there were issues with how things were handled. It seemed they had not confirmed the current condition of the equipment. I also questioned the staff’s level of training. I raised a complaint, but it felt like they did not understand a guest-first mindset. The Facilities such as the open-air bath are wonderful, but an Accommodation fee of over 200,000 yen for three people is not worth it. This was the most disappointing Facility and service I have experienced.

    The bath was wonderful!

    Having read many positive Reviews from various sources, I decided to stay here this time. From check-in onward, I felt the service was satisfying. The Room was very spacious, and with the high ceiling it felt open and comfortable. I first enjoyed the in-room bath (indoor bath + open-air bath), which felt wonderful, and at that point I thought it was the best bath. The selection of amenities was also excellent and very satisfying. The sky-view open-air bath I used afterward was even more impressive; the view from its elevated location overlooking the surrounding mountain range was truly beautiful. Since I stayed during summer this time, I would like to return in a different season. Overall, I found the meals satisfying; however, one disappointing point was that the charcoal temperature for grilling over the irori hearth was low at both dinner and breakfast. The staff kindly checked on it, but it would have been better if hotter charcoal had been prepared. All in all, I felt this Accommodation was very satisfying. As this was my first stay, it is an Accommodation where I would like to return in a different season.

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

    The Room and meals were, of course, wonderful, and the hospitality from the staff was truly outstanding. My husband praised it highly, saying it ranks among the top five Accommodations he has ever stayed at. A couple of small points we found a bit disappointing were the strong scent of the toilet air freshener and that the toilet paper seemed slightly damp. The bedroom is intentionally TV-free so guests can sleep quietly, but having a way to listen to music (such as CDs) might make it even more relaxing. Thank you for the souvenir chopsticks with the Accommodation’s name on them—they made a lovely keepsake.

    I have visited Kurokawa Onsen several times, and when I stayed at “Gekkouju” on my previous trip, I was deeply impressed by the warm and attentive service from all the staff. That experience made me want to return, so this was my second stay. Once again, I was welcomed with the same kindness and everyone’s bright smiles, and I truly appreciate how comfortable my stay was from start to finish. Your heartfelt hospitality could be felt in every detail, making this trip another unforgettable memory. As it was also a birthday trip, you kindly prepared a cake for us as well—thank you again. I would love to stay with you next year too, and I’m already looking forward to it.     It was excellent.

    I stayed at Kagetsu and made wonderful memories. The Room was just right, and the kids enjoyed the open-air bath and footbath. When I forgot something, they quickly brought it to me, and I was impressed by how attentive the service was. I will visit again, and I look forward to seeing you then.

    I didn’t feel the stay was worth the price.

    Kurokawa Onsen, which I had long dreamed of visiting. I chose this Accommodation because I was drawn to the Room. The open-air bath in the Room that I had been looking forward to was excellent. However, it was a maisonette-type Room, and the creaking noises from the floor and stairs were quite loud and really bothered me. Some of the outdoor lighting wasn’t turned on either. Even though I paid a high accommodation fee, nothing overall felt particularly special, which was disappointing.

    Everything was excellent.

    We arrived in Kurokawa Onsen earlier than expected, but they kindly came to pick up our luggage, which allowed us to explore the town until check-in. Even after checkout, they delivered our luggage to the next Ryokan. Their courteous support throughout was a great help.

    Even on rainy days

    The Room, the bath, and of course the food were all excellent. Everything was wonderful. In addition, R, who was in charge of our Room, provided outstanding service. We are truly grateful for everything during our meals and throughout our stay. Since rain was forecast for the next day, we shared our wishes and received a suggested schedule. We were able to experience such wonderful hospitality. Thank you very much. We will definitely return.

    Excellent location

    The beautifully maintained nature on the grounds, the view from our Room, and everything we saw were stunning—I feel enchanted just writing this review. Maintaining such an incredible natural setting must be a tremendous effort; thank you so much. Even if leaves or branches drift into the bath, it doesn’t bother us at all thanks to its pool-like spaciousness and natural beauty. With small children, we usually can’t relax in the Room for long, but this time our whole family stayed in almost the entire time. We made wonderful memories. We would love to come again—absolutely. We’re also grateful to IKYU for providing so much helpful information, which made it possible for us to choose this place.

    I was so impressed when I stayed here before that I came back again this time. The open-air bath in the Room is very spacious, and the building, Room, and amenities are all wonderful with a charming atmosphere. The meals and service are excellent; I have stayed at many great Accommodations around the Kanto area, but even compared with those, I think this place is No. 1.

    This was our first stay here. After we mentioned in advance that we would be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary, they brought a surprise fruit plate to our Room after dinner, which was a wonderful and happy surprise for both of us. The food was delicious, the Onsen was excellent, and the staff member who assisted us showed truly outstanding care and attention. We would definitely like to stay again.

    The meals were disappointing.

    Both the in-Room bath and the private bath were excellent. The hospitality was great, and we were able to relax and fully enjoy the Onsen. Dinner was a Japanese-Western fusion that wasn’t really to our taste, and it was disappointing that an allergen ingredient we had informed them about in advance was served. Breakfast was delicious.

    The open-air bath is wonderful.

    I visited on the recommendation of a friend who knows a lot about Onsen. It’s not an inexpensive Accommodation, but the hospitality from check-in to check-out was outstanding, and I was completely satisfied. The guest room had underfloor heating, so even though the temperature was below freezing, it was warm and comfortable. The open-air bath in the room was spacious—large enough for about 10 people! The meals were also excellent, with meat and fish grilled over binchotan charcoal, and the female staff member in charge provided pleasant service. Privacy is well maintained, and you don’t have to run into other guests. This is a truly wonderful Accommodation. I would love to stay again.

    Room of the Sixteenth-Night Moon

    I made a Reservation six months in advance, choosing only the Izayoi Room—and it was absolutely the right choice. Right in front of the living room was an open-air bath, and since it was a warm day, we opened the large doors wide and relaxed while watching the steam rise and taking in the Aso mountain range. From the open-air bath, we enjoyed everything—the blue sky, sunset, starry sky, moonlight bathing, and even a morning moon when we woke up. The view alone was more than enough to satisfy us. The Shuttle Service to Yuakari was wonderful as well, and for dinner the basashi (horse sashimi), Kumamoto Akaushi beef, and Kagoshima Kuroge Wagyu were tender and beautifully marbled—we even had seconds. Breakfast was delicately seasoned; the nikujaga (meat-and-potato stew) and flounder sashimi were especially delicious. I gave four stars for service because check-in and check-out were a little disappointing. Other than that, the service was excellent, and our Room attendant was thoughtful, kind, and truly wonderful. This is a one-of-a-kind Accommodation I would definitely like to visit again. Thank you very much!
