    We recommend a Multiple Night Stay.

    As a treat for myself, I stayed alone for a multiple night stay. The hotel's name includes "Retreat," and I could feel the calm atmosphere as other guests were reading books or relaxing in hammocks. The staff maintained a perfect balance of attentiveness and distance, which made the experience very comfortable. The breakfast was also delicious. This was my first stay, and I booked a multiple night stay. On the middle day, I didn’t leave the hotel and spent the entire day moving between the onsen, café, free bird, and occasionally my room, enjoying the views and reading books. I never imagined that doing nothing could feel so fulfilling and luxurious. After returning home, I wanted my family to experience this feeling too, so I made another reservation. I’m already looking forward to staying in the room with the wood stove next time!

    Refresh your mind and body.

    A late summer vacation. Instead of sightseeing here and there, I chose this accommodation to enjoy a relaxing escape from the ordinary, and it was the perfect choice. The guest rooms surrounded by lush greenery are quiet, allowing you to spend your time as you wish. Guests can freely enjoy complimentary coffee and tea, so I brought along a book I had been wanting to read and finished it in one go or spent time writing. When I got bored, I took walks outside, enjoyed the collection of books in the shared space, or indulged in delicious cakes and bread at the café. The French dinner course with wood-fired grill was excellent—especially the bread was delightful. The breakfast buffet offered a wide variety of salads, and the live kitchen's egg dishes were delicious too. The service struck a perfect balance between attentiveness and unobtrusiveness; foreign staff members were friendly while Japanese staff provided exceptional hospitality. I appreciated being driven to a nearby bus stop on my way back—it was very helpful. This trip reminded me to cherish myself more deeply. Thank you very much!

    Stayed during a typh...

    Stayed during a typhoon approaching. Visited with high expectations as the reviews mentioned delicious meals. It was an 8-minute walk from the bus stop, but the steep slope was surprising. I was honestly shocked that there was no shuttle service, though a golf cart picked us up at the top of the hill. However, despite bad weather and heavy luggage, not once were we offered help with our bags until we were shown to our room, which made check-in quite unsettling. Staying at a certain level of hotels and ryokans monthly, I found this unacceptable. We were directed to a space for welcome drinks but couldn’t sit as it was occupied by a group of about 10 people holding a long meeting. The onsen required quite a walk through the forest and felt challenging in bad weather or during winter like on our stay day. However, the onsen itself had comfortable seating designs and OSAJI amenities provided, which were excellent. The room’s air conditioning seemed centrally controlled but felt hot; perhaps that’s why they gave us fans? Despite listing complaints first, I must say that we were very satisfied with the room's interior design and especially with the meals. We opted for premium wine free-flowing service which exceeded expectations as well. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious! The service overall seemed good too. At checkout, someone who appeared to be in charge kindly carried our luggage and held an umbrella for us—this thoughtful gesture reassured me that hospitality is not entirely overlooked here. This is truly an accommodation offering wonderful cuisine; I hope staff training improves further in future visits! Thank you for your hospitality!

    The facility, with its tasteful design amidst nature, was very comfortable. I would love to stay again. The book selection at Free Bird was also excellent. Some reviews mention the young staff, but I found them just right and had no unpleasant experiences. The lizards and frogs were adorable too. Next time, I’d like to try a Multiple Night Stay. That said, there are two points I’d like you to consider: <1> The BGM in the restaurant during dinner felt like cheap wedding after-party pop music, which was disappointing. Given the ambiance and cuisine of this space, higher-quality ambient or natural sounds would be more fitting. While the lounge and Free Bird had pleasant music playing, it felt mismatched here. Since you entrusted Yutaka Habu for book selection, perhaps curating the restaurant’s BGM could also become a unique talking point. <2> For a Multiple Night Stay, having course dinners every night might feel heavy. However, going out for meals would reduce precious time spent enjoying the facility itself. It would be great if guests staying multiple nights could choose simpler options such as curry sets or basic Japanese meals—even at a slightly higher price—so they can enjoy dining without leaving the premises.

    Perfect for solo travelers, enjoy a wonderful Hotel stay in harmony with nature.

    I chose this Hotel, which I had been curious about for years, as a destination for a solo trip to relax and refresh. I selected the most basic Room, but it was minimalistic with a warm atmosphere. I was very satisfied with the view and sounds from the window. At night, I enjoyed music through the speakers provided. The lounge, available for free use, was perfect for reading and relaxing. There was also a guitar available, and it was pleasant to hear other guests playing it. Although I had some concerns about meals after reading Reviews beforehand, I enjoyed French-style cuisine with delicious bread and was satisfied with both the quality of the dishes and the wine selection. Since moving to the Onsen or restaurant requires walking outside, staying at this Hotel would be ideal on sunny days. I hope to visit again with my family!

    Stay amidst the tranquility of the forest

    For someone like me who has spent most of my life in the hustle and bustle of the city, this was a luxurious environment, time, and service. The breakfast already offers three delicious main dishes, but it could be even more exceptional by focusing on enhancing the quality of these mains while significantly reducing the variety in the buffet. Improving the quality of items like salads, soups, and fruits would elevate the experience further. This is just my personal opinion—please come and experience it for yourself!

    I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Hotel. The property is situated on a slope, with separate buildings for enjoying coffee, eating shaved ice, and bathing. All of these were complimentary during the stay, allowing for a relaxing experience. The desserts sold at the coffee house were also incredibly delicious. Breakfast was particularly outstanding, featuring items like Eggs Benedict and burgers prepared in a live kitchen—so much so that it was almost impossible to try everything! Dinner was served as a course meal, with the main meat dish being impressively hearty. However, while my sons found the appetizer of squid with passion fruit sauce to be quite adventurous in flavor, I personally wished dinner had matched breakfast's style and taste. One point worth mentioning is that drink prices during dinner were surprisingly high; it would be appreciated if soft drinks were more reasonably priced. Wines and other beverages also felt too expensive to order casually. The large number of international guests created an atmosphere reminiscent of an overseas resort, which added to the charm. Unfortunately, some guests from certain countries displayed poor manners in the bath area (such as knocking on walls between male and female baths), which was disappointing but not uncommon. Overall though, I am extremely satisfied with my experience and would love to visit again. Thank you very much!

    I had a relaxing stay.

    I enjoyed a quiet and relaxing stay in the forest of Hakone. The accommodation had many young couples and solo travelers, with no families with small children, creating a pleasant and mature atmosphere. I was able to take my time in the bath as well. The breakfast buffet was very delicious, though the dinner course felt a bit heavy for an elderly couple like us. There were many stairs, which was slightly challenging for someone with mobility issues, but overall, I think it is a good hotel.

    It was my first stay in a while.

    This was my third stay after several years. It was my second time staying in the suite room, but unlike a few years ago, the room smelled of sweat and seemed to have an odor of feet ingrained in it. The carpet was discolored and felt like it was being covered up with a rug. The meals used to be truly excellent, with careful attention to allergies and even allergy-friendly dishes that were impressive. However, this time everything tasted either too salty or too sweet, overly greasy, and the bread—which I believe used to be homemade—seemed like something you’d find at Costco. For allergy accommodation, instead of meat, I was served carrot soup, which left me quite surprised. The staff members were as kind and attentive as ever. The view is stunning, the atmosphere and air are wonderful, and the onsen remains delightful—it’s always been one of my favorite accommodations—so this experience was very disappointing.

    The Japanese cuisine was excellent.

    My first time trying Japanese cuisine. True to its name, “Chouu,” I enjoyed my meal while listening to the sound of rain. It had been a while since my mind and heart felt so calm and clear. Our server was in their third month on the job, and they were truly pleasant. The atmosphere, the food, and the hospitality—everything made for a very satisfying dinner.

    Honestly, not worth the price...

    This was my first time staying at this accommodation. Nestled in the forest, the facility allows you to enjoy the greenery of the trees and the chirping of birds, making it easy to forget the hustle and bustle of city life. It truly embodies the "retreat" concept reflected in its name. While I found many aspects of this accommodation delightful, there were also several points that I found disappointing. Given how wonderful this facility is overall, I hope improvements can be considered. Below are my observations on both negative and positive aspects. Negative Points 1. Upon entering the room after check-in, there was an unpleasant smell (likely from the carpet) reminiscent of a gymnasium. Even after using the provided deodorizing spray, it did not go away, which dampened my mood every time I entered what was otherwise a lovely room. 2. During dinner service, I was surprised when a staff member placed a spoon for cold soup directly on the table without using a cutlery rest (unlike other utensils). At least placing it on a placemat would have been preferable. 3. Regarding dinner service: some guests were dining in loungewear despite it being course dining, which detracted from the atmosphere. Additionally, seating arrangements were too close together (the same as during breakfast), making it challenging for staff to serve dishes smoothly. 4. The women's large bath had OSAJI amenities; however, these were not available in men's facilities where even basic items like lotion were missing—this felt unequal and disappointing. Furthermore, rooms lacked skincare products such as lotion or facial cleanser which caused inconvenience. 5. Dust accumulation on air conditioning units in communal baths and poor ventilation performance (National system) in shower rooms within guest rooms stood out negatively. 6. Communication with international staff members proved difficult due to their limited Japanese proficiency at times. 7. During our multiple night stay cleaning staff spoke loudly amongst themselves as if unaware guests might still be present—this felt inconsiderate. Positive Points 1.The view from our room's window showcasing lush greenery along with bird songs created an incredibly relaxing environment—the facility itself is excellent along with its surroundings. 2.The meals served here are delicious! Complimentary coffee offered both great taste & takeaway options adding charm while cakes stood out exceptionally well—not only tasty but also reasonably priced leaving us highly satisfied! 3.Audio speakers provided inside rooms delivered high-quality sound enhancing overall enjoyment throughout our stay!

    Everything was perfect! Stayed with my elderly mother.

    Due to my 84-year-old mother's age, we can't travel far, so we use hotels or ryokans in nearby areas like Hakone, Izu, and Atami about once every two months. This time, I chose this place because I wanted to relax. It was raining, making it difficult to move without an umbrella. There were many stairs, and the meals seemed more suited for younger people. My mother has bad knees and cannot climb stairs without handrails; she also has dental issues. Despite these challenges, my mother said this was the best place she had ever visited and expressed her desire to come back again during the autumn foliage season. (Even though I've taken her to hotels costing over 100,000 yen for two people.) It was such a wonderful place that I almost don't want to share it with anyone else! However, because it was so amazing, I'd love to recommend it as a must-visit spot for someone special. The staff were incredibly kind as well. We will definitely return! Looking forward to next time!     Enjoyed the fresh greenery in the mountains!

    I stayed with a friend, and we were guided by cart from the entrance to the facility. Several buildings are located on the mountainside, where we enjoyed tea, meals, Onsen, and puzzles. The concept seemed to be about enjoying time without a TV, which was great. There were also speakers available, but since we didn’t know how to use them, having an instruction manual would have been helpful. The meal was Italian cuisine and very delicious; we were highly satisfied and enjoyed it with wine. Although it rained the next day, umbrellas were provided for us, which was very convenient. After checking out, they kindly drove us to the forest art museum that we planned to visit—this was very helpful. Thank you so much!

    Hotel with Communication Difficulties

    Specific Issues: 1. For multiple room reservations, the guest names were attempted to be communicated via phone but were claimed to already be known. Later, during another call, it was pointed out that the guest names had not been received. 2. During our call, dinner time confirmation was requested without prior notice or consent, which is inappropriate as it used our phone expenses for their convenience. Moreover, the hotel had previously stated that dinner time should be confirmed at check-in on the day of arrival. 3. At check-in, explanations were clear; however, breakfast time was explained as starting at 7:00 AM but turned out to start at 7:30 AM the next morning as per written documents. This misinformation caused confusion with several group members arriving at 7:00 AM at the restaurant unnecessarily. 4. During dinner service when champagne was opened and a request made to pour its remainder later on, staff initially responded that it had run out but served lukewarm champagne after some time despite claiming otherwise earlier—raising concerns over handling accuracy/trustworthiness here too! 5.During checkout additional charges payment processing delays led us opting instead first having breakfast only returning afterward finding preparations still incomplete meanwhile being asked write-down receipt name manually despite legible verbal communication attempts amidst tight schedules arising miscommunication errors stemming prior wrong breakfast timing info causing rushed departure arrangements ultimately necessitating follow-up contact requests regarding receipts delivery post-stay     It was a very lovely accommodation where I could refresh, but...

    We stayed here for a long-awaited trip with my wife to unwind from work fatigue. The large windows and balcony offered a view of the lush garden and distant mountains, accompanied by the soothing sounds of nature, creating a truly sensory experience. With a spacious and well-organized room and relaxing facilities, we enjoyed our stay from the 3:00 PM check-in until the 11:00 AM check-out, feeling completely refreshed! However, there were two points that caught our attention. At check-in, we were assisted by a foreign staff member who informed us about dinner times. Although we thought we could choose our preferred time slot, she said, "The second seating at 7:45 PM is crowded; we'd like to guide you to the first seating at 5:30 PM." This made us feel as though there was no choice available—an initial disappointment upon arrival. Upon further clarification, it seemed her intention was simply to recommend less crowded times due to her limited Japanese proficiency. She appeared kind-hearted with no ill intent but lacked clarity in communication. While I understand that accommodating non-Japanese staff may require some flexibility on our part, I had higher expectations for hospitality here. Additionally, when heading toward the parking lot after being told by Japanese staff that someone would assist us there, this same foreign staff member arrived late after we had already reached the parking area. This lack of punctuality felt out of place in Japan's typically precise service standards. Of course, this is not meant as discrimination against foreign staff; they likely bring positive aspects too—but unfortunately these shortcomings stood out during our stay. That said—aside from these two issues—we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! The breakfast buffet was delicious with friendly kitchen staff who left a great impression. Because it’s such an exceptional accommodation and space overall perhaps these minor flaws became more noticeable... Still though—on balance both my wife & I were very satisfied! Thank you so much!

    Despite mentioning in the comment section during the reservation that I was staying to celebrate my sister's birthday and that there were allergies to walnuts and pecans, there was no "Happy Birthday" message, and I was surprised when asked at check-in, "Do you have any allergies?" As someone who also works in a hotel, it is basic practice to understand the purpose of a guest's stay beforehand. Regarding allergies, it would make sense if they confirmed by saying something like, "Is it correct that you have allergies to walnuts and pecans?" However, this indicates that none of the information I provided in advance was checked. I did not reserve Retreat Fore simply for "taking a bath and sleeping," so this experience was very disappointing.

    This time was a bit disappointing.

    This is one of my favorite places to spend a wonderful holiday. However, this time, the dining experience was disappointing for the first time. I was initially worried when I heard that the owner had changed, but during my visit in January, those concerns proved unnecessary, and I felt reassured. The dinner menu had just been updated; while the clam soup was exquisite, the rest of the dishes lacked their usual impact. Additionally, I always look forward to the breakfast buffet above all else, but unfortunately, this time the rice was undercooked and not very tasty. As it’s a Hotel I truly love, I hope they can improve their dining experience again. On a positive note, renovations were made to the large public bath with new wood added and smoother sliding doors leading to the outdoor bath.     It was an ordinary Hotel.

    The price range was somewhat high, so I had certain expectations, but the Room did not seem to match the price. However, other Facility services and staff were good. The Room was clean and tidy, but perhaps due to thin walls and doors, I could hear not only noises from above and next door but also the shutter sound of an iPhone from the adjacent Room, which was distracting throughout my stay. I stayed in a Room where the toilet and shower were combined. The lighting was quite dim with gray walls, giving it a bit of a cell-like feel. Every time I entered the toilet, I couldn't help but laugh at how dark it was. The staff provided very courteous service. The open-air bath was also very relaxing. What stood out particularly well was the service at the café; their café latte was incredibly delicious. Even though it’s free drinks, they had cute latte art, and both taste and presentation were surprisingly high-level. Only the guest Room was disappointing.

    I had a very relaxin...

    I had a very relaxing stay in the refreshing air. The wood stove was a delight for the season, warming both body and soul. The two-bedroom layout was perfect for our family. I would love to visit again. Thank you very much for this time.

    Open-air bath with snow

    This was my first time staying here, and it happened to snow, making the snowy scenery from the open-air bath absolutely stunning. The Room was spacious and equipped with a wood stove, allowing us to spend our time comfortably. The wood stove was relatively easy to light, and the flickering flames were soothing. The tiled areas seemed to have underfloor heating, which kept them warm. The lighting mainly consisted of indirect lighting, so it felt a bit dim. The bath was spacious, and perhaps because it had just been renovated, it had a pleasant hinoki (cypress) aroma. The Eggs Benedict served at breakfast was delicious. As for the service, the foreign staff members, despite the language barrier, made a sincere effort to provide excellent service, which was very pleasant. They also handled complaints properly, and the timing of clearing the tables was smooth. It was a unique experience compared to other Hotels and Ryokans I have stayed at before.

    Again during the season of fresh greenery

    Overall, it was a very well-balanced Hotel. The meals, both dinner and breakfast, were excellent. The service was provided by sincere and hardworking staff, and even if the hospitality was not perfect, it was enjoyable to be served with such effort. The casual service overall was very good. The Room was compact, and the feeling of it being like a base was refreshing. The time spent gazing outside from the sofa by the window was blissful. I would love to visit again during the season of fresh greenery. The café latte in the lounge was delicious. I was truly impressed by the high quality of the desserts at dinner and the cakes in the lounge. Highly recommended. Next time, I would like to arrive earlier and spend a relaxing time in the lounge with cake and drinks. However, the strong west sunlight in the evening was a bit much, so having curtain rolls might be a good idea. The dirt on the windows was quite noticeable, which was a little disappointing, but it might be inevitable due to the season. Additionally, the bath and dressing room in the morning were left messy from the night before, and this was the same for both men and women. It would be nice if some simple cleaning and tidying could be done somewhere. The multipurpose space and café space, which serve as another morning activity area, also had tables and chairs left as they were, and the herbal tea was either empty or scattered from the box. Just a little tidying up in the morning would change the impression and unconsciously enhance the level of favorability. Although the Facility is old, I think it is being utilized well with what is available. The age of the Room and the large public bath is noticeable, but I believe there is ingenuity in their use. The heating in the Room was very comfortable. The down gown provided as loungewear was so light and warm that I wanted to buy one. The guests were mostly calm and composed, even though there were some younger people, so I was able to spend a relaxing time. At the end, after checking out, a male staff member who was seeing off overseas guests in a taxi quickly returned as we were about to leave, which was disappointing. The staff member was speaking in English, but it felt like it reflected the essence of this Property. It is wonderfully good, but it feels like something important is missing. Perhaps there is an excess of staff, leading to a mindset of "someone else will do it." That said, the unpretentious casualness, the truly delicious cakes, the breakfast that makes you want to eat it repeatedly, and the time spent immersed in nature were invaluable. Thank you for your hospitality. I look forward to visiting again.

    There are too many foreign staff.

    This was my second visit, and I was looking forward to it as I had a good impression of the service last time. When I arrived by car, there was a foreign staff member in the parking lot who checked my name, but I was surprised when they addressed me by my last name without any honorifics. Additionally, the person who served the Japanese-style breakfast was also a foreign staff member, and I would have preferred a Japanese staff member for this. I think it would be nice if the bath also had a sauna.

    Room heating only

    Second visit. I still think it's a good Stays. Dinner and breakfast were very delicious. One point... The air conditioning settings in the Room are not detailed, and although there was a humidifier, the Room was very dry, which was the only concern. I used the large public bath before the renovation, so I'm looking forward to seeing it become beautiful.

    Relaxing Time

    I stayed at the retreat for the first time. This time, I booked a room with a fireplace, allowing me to enjoy a relaxing time away from the daily life in the city. The hotel staff were very kind, and both dinner and breakfast were of high quality and enjoyable. Below are the good points and areas for improvement. Disappointing Points: 1. It was mentioned on YouTube and other platforms that there was a delicious bakery within the facility, but it seems the management has changed, and the bakery is no longer there. If possible, I would like the service to be resumed. 2. My wife has difficulty walking, and since the room with the fireplace was on the second floor, she had to go up and down steep stairs, which was challenging as it was not barrier-free. It might be a bit tough for travelers with elderly family members. 3. The onsen facility itself was wonderful, but the changing room and washing area were cold. Good Points: 1. The coffee served for free was of high quality and very delicious. 2. The stereo installed in the room with Wi-Fi connection was equipped with Dali speakers, which was very satisfying. 3. The food was extremely delicious. 4. The staff's response was pleasant. 5. The cafe lounge and the relaxation space where hot wine was provided were very relaxing. Overall, the satisfaction level can be evaluated as very high.

    Refresh

    Since it was Sengokuhara in January, I was worried about snow in Hakone, but fortunately, I was able to go by car without any problems. In the serene environment of the forest, I was very satisfied with both the Onsen and the meals, and the staff's courteous service allowed me to relax. I especially wanted to try various dishes at breakfast, but couldn't finish them all, so I plan to visit again.

    Positive impact of inbound tourism

    As a repeat guest, I find the meals particularly excellent, and the cost performance is outstanding. I feel that it is one of the few hotels with a positive inbound effect. I look forward to my next visit.
