    Always relaxing.

This was my third stay. It was my first time visiting in summer, and the lush greenery outside the window was very soothing. There are many international staff members, but everyone works hard and it never feels out of place. This time, I ordered cake and coffee to go from the café lounge, and I really appreciated how a Japanese staff member carefully packed the cup in the cake box so it wouldn’t tip over—such thoughtful attention to detail. I’ll be back again. Thank you very much.

Pros and Cons of the Minimum

Overall, this Accommodation has a minimalist design and is ideal for a forest retreat. With no TV and no clock, it’s a place where you can truly feel connected to your body in the woods. However, perhaps because design was prioritized above all else, I often found it inconvenient due to the small text—such as signage within the Hotel Facility, instructions for setting locker PIN codes at the Onsen, and distinguishing between the Onsen shampoo and body soap—especially as a middle-aged guest with presbyopia. Aside from that, it was generally a very good Accommodation.

Unfortunately, the check-in and check-out experience was disappointing.

As the title says. I arrived later than planned, but I had to wait about 30 minutes to check in because the staff member’s Japanese was not very fluent. It may have been due to a staff shortage, but even when other staff walked by, they seemed tired. Also, at check-out there was only one person handling it and a line formed. Other staff were chatting among themselves, so I wondered if they couldn’t be assigned to help. The food, Facility, and atmosphere were excellent, so that part was disappointing.

    No repeat stays—absolutely not!

I visited with the expectation of a secluded Accommodation hidden in the forest. From being guided to the parking area at check-in onward, even the check-in process was handled entirely by foreign staff whose Japanese was halting. For the welcome service, I had to go to a separate building myself, where iced tea and popcorn were provided as self-service. That building had not been cleaned and was unpleasant. The outdoor bath was inside a wonderful building designed by a well-known architect, and both the bathhouse and bathing area were excellent. The Room itself was not bad; however, once again, the shower room had not been cleaned—so much so that I could not walk barefoot. There were also stains and grime on the walls and ceiling, and it did not appear to be maintained. At dinner, a group of guests was very loud. I asked three Japanese floor staff members to request that they lower their voices, but none of them responded, so I could not enjoy the meal at all. Most of the staff are from Nepal and Vietnam. Even when passing by, they did not greet guests. This Hotel has a wonderful setting and buildings, but it lacks maintenance; cleaning is inadequate; and staff hospitality is zero. Later I heard that the owner is from Singapore, which made sense to me.

I stayed for a Multiple Night Stay of 3 nights.

I stayed here for the first time because I wanted to work in the forest. The Room is compact yet very comfortable, and above all, the atmosphere of the garden, terrace, and café was so relaxing that I ended up extending my stay by one night. I also enjoyed the fireplace experience and grinding coffee beans myself with a coffee mill. The instructions were easy to understand even for beginners, which I really appreciated. Thank you as well to the manager for all your thoughtful care. The grounds are vast, and even traveling around by buggy felt special—almost like being abroad. Renting a bicycle was also a refreshing and very fun experience. Dinner was delicious, too. I highly recommend this Accommodation for anyone who wants to unwind in nature or enjoy forest bathing.

    Outstanding hospitality!

Most of the staff seemed to be from overseas, but everyone greeted us with warm smiles, so we felt at ease throughout our stay. Thank you for your pleasant and courteous service in every situation! As for the Room... it was our first time staying in a second-floor Room. We were happy to see the fireplace and enjoy the familiar view, but... To our surprise, the toilet wall was made of glass!! And right next to that glass-walled toilet was the bed... There was a curtain, but it barely provided any privacy. I honestly can’t understand why it was designed that way. We have stayed here many times, so we were shocked to learn there is a Room like this. We disliked the in-room toilet so much that even on a stormy night we went outside to use the toilet by the bath area. Next time, we definitely want to refuse that Room. The service and food were excellent, so it was disappointing—if only it hadn’t been that Room.

    We enjoyed the delicious meals.

It was my first time back at Hakone Retreat Före in six years. The Room, just as before, had a calm atmosphere with no unnecessary decoration, and the fresh green leaves seen through the window were truly soothing. The dinner and breakfast were both delicious, and I was very impressed by the courteous service from the international staff. What disappointed me was that the water in the large public bath was not flowing, so I didn’t feel like I could relax and soak at ease. Overflowing water may be a luxury, but it’s what makes me happiest. At an Onsen, I hope for an abundant flow of hot water.

    Hakone Retreat

It was right during cherry blossom season and the weather was getting warmer, so I looked for an Accommodation in Hakone for a 1-night, 2-day trip and made a Reservation because I loved the Scandinavian style. The Accommodation is a renovated property, and it feels like staying at an overseas Hotel even though you’re in Hakone. It’s especially recommended for people who are tired of the usual Hakone experience and for international visitors. Meals: Breakfast is buffet-style. Currently, you can choose between Eggs Benedict and a BLT sandwich and order directly from the chef. Dinner is served at the wood-fired dining venue; they are particular about ingredients, so it’s highly recommended. Depending on your check-in time, but breakfast is a must. Room: I recommend the Room with a wood-burning stove. The Room has automatic climate control, but you can add logs and enjoy the flickering flames inside. Baths: There are indoor baths and an open-air bath. The wooden atmosphere is lovely. Perhaps because many guests are international visitors, it never felt crowded compared to the number of guests, so it was very comfortable. Facility & services: You can roast marshmallows and sweet potatoes. There is a paid bicycle rental service, including e-bikes. If the weather is good, cycling around Sengokuhara should be fun. Cafe: You can order coffee anytime during regular hours. Since there are many international guests, if you speak some English, it’s also enjoyable to communicate in the open common spaces. The grounds within the Facility are very large, so I thought it would be even more comfortable if they were better maintained with walking paths that allow you to stroll around inside like a small trail course. Because you need to walk within the Facility and there are elevation changes, I recommend this place for guests other than elderly people with mobility issues or those traveling with babies/strollers.

    We had a relaxing time.

This was my second stay, and my first since the management changed. I was able to relax and enjoy my time. To help improve the service, I would like to mention the following: - The milk in the complimentary café latte was lukewarm (all three times I had it). - The buttons on the Room wear were hard to fasten, and the size felt small (it didn’t feel like a relaxed fit). - The restaurant lighting was quite dim, so I requested a seat change. Due to my age, it’s difficult for me to see what’s in front of me in low light, and I was moved to a brighter seat. These days many guests take photos as well, so I hope you can adjust the lighting placement so that dishes are not left in shadow.

Foreign guests may bathe in the Onsen wearing swimsuits.

It felt like this Accommodation has a very large number of international guests. I was surprised to see several international guests bathing in the Onsen wearing swimsuits. What are the Accommodation’s rules regarding this? I was concerned, so I left a Review. Also, after checkout, while walking down the long slope toward the bus stop, a Hotel vehicle carrying international guests passed right in front of me and provided Shuttle Service to the bus stop. Since transportation needs can likely be confirmed at check-in, I would like guidance and assistance to be offered equally to all guests. It left me feeling disappointed.

    Standard.

I was looking forward to spending my birthday at a slightly upscale Accommodation, but both the front desk service and the food (the taste and presentation of dinner) felt disappointing for the price. Rather than small portions of high-quality ingredients, it gave the impression of simply offering large quantities. Breakfast was enjoyable, with salad, made-to-order Eggs Benedict, and a wide selection of teas, but it was hard to tell where things were because the salad area was tucked away in a corner near the desserts and the hot drinks were placed at the counter. I used the bath in the morning, but the open-air bath was far too lukewarm because no hot water seemed to be added. I usually bring my own hair dryer, but I expected a good one would be provided at this price point and didn’t bring mine—another disappointment.

    Relax quietly and unwind peacefully.

The three of us—my mother and two daughters—booked the fore Plan with breakfast and dinner plus free-flow. In a quiet Room nestled among the trees with a wood-burning stove, we were able to relax peacefully while watching the flames. The luxurious dinner was a delight for both the eyes and the palate, and the Onsen water felt smooth yet richly soothing. The three of us had plenty to chat about, and we were very satisfied. In the morning, it was also great fun to watch so many birds from our Room window. However, as my mother is elderly, getting around inside the property was a bit challenging due to the number of stairs. There were also no handrails in the bath area, so she needed assistance—but that has become a good memory for us as well. One small disappointment was that only one pair of outdoor slippers for women and two larger pairs (apparently for men) were provided in the Room, making it slightly difficult to walk. Overall, it was a comfortable, quiet, and enjoyable stay. Thank you very much. It’s a place we would love to visit again.

    Tawaraishi-kaku

I stayed at Tawaraishikaku on a school trip in 6th grade. I attended Denenchofu Futaba, and my cousins also remembered staying here when they went with Keio Yochisha. It was a nostalgic place, and we enjoyed beautiful, delicious meals. The step at the foot of the bed in the Room can be dangerous for elderly guests. Also, the font on the information sheet is too small.

    I traveled here with...

I traveled here with my partner for a relaxing getaway. We booked the most affordable Room, and I was pleasantly surprised to be assigned a Room with a wood-burning stove. However, there was no explanation at check-in. When I asked at check-out, the staff member (a foreign employee) said they didn’t know. While it felt like a lucky upgrade, some guests might not want their Room changed, so I would have appreciated a brief explanation. Dinner was very delicious, and the staff warmly checked in with us—asking things like “Did you enjoy your meal?”—which made for a wonderful time. At dinner it seemed nearly full with other guests staying, so I expected the baths to be crowded, but they were quite empty and we could soak and relax. One concern was breakfast: it was buffet-style with part of it run as a live kitchen where items you order are brought to your table. Ours took a long time to arrive and was delivered to the table next to us; they ate it even though they hadn’t ordered it. When we mentioned that ours still hadn’t arrived, the staff informed the kitchen again, but we were surprised to hear it had been taken somewhere else first. In the morning most of the staff were foreign employees, and communication with the Japanese chef at the live kitchen didn’t seem smooth. We saw multiple mix-ups with tables right in front of us, so I feel this should be improved. That said, everything was very clean overall and we were able to truly unwind, so I would recommend this place to family and friends.

    I’m satisfied.

No TV. No convenience store nearby. Once you enter the Facility, it’s difficult to go out without a car. Time there felt very quiet and unhurried. You can lounge around in your Room, play board games in the shared area, relax at the café, or unwind in the Onsen. I was able to enjoy the luxury of spending time doing nothing—without planning or thinking too much. It was also great that ice cream and popcorn were available for free. The property itself is simple and clean, and I liked that it didn’t feel cluttered with unnecessary things. The service was comfortable from start to finish with no particular stress. There were many younger guests, but everyone had good manners, which was nice. One thing to note is that you have to walk outside to get anywhere—the restaurant, Onsen, café, or shared spaces—so it would be tough on rainy days. It was also cold, so we ended up putting on a down jacket each time we went out. It didn’t bother us much, but some people may find it inconvenient. I forgot my phone charger, but they lent me one and it really helped a lot.

    First Family Trip

We used this accommodation for our first family trip. I had stayed here once during my single days and remembered it as a wonderful place, so I chose it as the destination for my child's first trip. Our 2-night, 3-day stay became a very memorable experience. One mistake we made was taking the bus from Odawara Station because I wanted to ride the Romancecar after a long time. Previously, we came by car, so I didn't notice how far it was from the station. If possible, I recommend coming by car. For babies, they provided bed guards, diaper trash bins, and baby baths for rent, making it easier to travel with less luggage when bringing a baby along. During meals, they also prepared baby tableware for us. When our baby cried during meals, the staff kindly helped soothe them—it was very helpful. Perhaps due to many inbound guests staying here, there were many foreign staff members who all provided polite and excellent service. While "No Meals Included" might be nice too, the breakfast buffet and dinner course were delicious—so I highly recommend choosing a meal-inclusive plan! Since we stayed multiple nights, one of our dinners was served at their restaurant-style dining area instead of the usual course meal location; my husband was also very satisfied with its taste. We would love to visit again!

    A trip with my daughter

We chose this accommodation for its easy access from the city and relaxing atmosphere. It is located very close to the Glass Museum. Upon climbing the hill, a car was waiting to take us to the front desk. We stayed in a simple twin room, which didn’t feel cramped at all. The in-room wear and slippers were also comfortable. There are two free drink spaces available. The shop offered alcohol, beer, some snacks, cookies, and cakes. The beer and pudding we purchased were delicious. They baked sweet potatoes over firewood and provided marshmallows for roasting as well. We enjoyed interacting with international guests during this time. As for amenities, the shower room in our room had only Waphyto body soap and shampoo/conditioner sets. In the onsen area, OSAJI skincare products were available; they suited my skin well so I used them throughout our stay. The onsen included both indoor baths and open-air baths—compact but never crowded—allowing us to enjoy a very comfortable experience. The meals weren’t particularly noteworthy; however, we opted for free-flow drinks which allowed us to try various types of alcohol that complemented our meal nicely. At night, we heard there would be ice cream available—a treat my daughter was looking forward to—but unfortunately it wasn’t offered this time around; she was disappointed but laughed it off. Half of the staff members were international workers with many young employees overall. Everyone was incredibly kind! For accommodations in this price range, I’d say it’s perfect value for money. We’re already talking about coming back again as a family next time! Thank you very much!

A Luxurious Way to Spend Your Time

Visiting during this time of year has become a cherished tradition. The wood stove is essential for a relaxing stay, offering a unique warmth and ambiance that creates truly special moments. It’s something you must experience! While I was a big fan of the bakery, it’s unfortunate that it’s no longer available. I hope you enjoy the wood stove, savor the dinner, and indulge in the Onsen. However, I do notice every time that the noise from the Onsen's ventilation fan and the smudges on the restaurant entrance glass are a bit disappointing.

A comfortable accommodation where you can rediscover the charm of rainy days.

It was a day with light rain, but this wonderful accommodation provided a refreshing experience even on rainy days. The path to the onsen, accompanied by the sound and scent of rain, had a charming atmosphere and was very pleasant. We chose a plan that included breakfast. While the variety wasn't extensive, both the taste and portion size were satisfying. The staff maintained an ideal level of attentiveness, making our stay comfortable. This time, we stayed in a Deluxe Double Room with a wood-burning stove. The room was spacious enough, with calming lighting that allowed us to fully relax. The built-in Bluetooth speaker also had excellent sound quality, helping us rejuvenate both body and mind during our two-day stay. We look forward to visiting again during the fresh green season!

    It was a Multiple Ni...

It was a Multiple Night Stay from Hakone Retreat Villa 1/f to Fore. Surrounded by the comfort of the wood-burning stove, I found myself thinking, "We’ve been using quite a luxurious amount of firewood since our stay at the Villa yesterday," as I thoroughly enjoyed the warmth and ambiance of the fire. In a space free from TV noise, I listened to pleasant music and the crackling sound of firewood while taking a leisurely walk through the forest that had cleared up after yesterday's rain. It was my own way of retreating, and I was completely satisfied with my stay. Meals were served in an open kitchen style where you could dynamically enjoy wood-fired cuisine. Both dinner and breakfast (buffet-style) were satisfying, but what left an even stronger impression on me was their coffee. The coffee served at their café (where unlimited coffee and tea are complimentary during your stay) tasted different from that offered at their restaurant "WOODSIDE." When I asked one of the staff about it, they confirmed that it is indeed prepared differently. I was truly impressed by such meticulous attention to detail!

    Second stay

During my previous stay, I mentioned wanting to stay in a room with a fireplace next time, so I returned. The atmosphere of being nestled in the forest and the interior of the room are truly soothing. Without a TV, it’s an ideal accommodation for enjoying quiet and relaxing moments. However, I noticed some changes compared to last time—there were more foreign guests and many of the staff members were also non-Japanese. While their service was efficient, it felt somewhat impersonal and lacked warmth. Unfortunately, there were a few disappointments: the Wi-Fi connection in the room was poor, and I found four stink bugs hiding inside. Additionally, I only learned about Diamond Member benefits at checkout and had to rush to make purchases; it would have been helpful if this information was provided during check-in. Despite these points, I look forward to visiting again during another cozy fireplace season!

I enjoyed the autumn leaves and Christmas atmosphere, and had a relaxing stay. Although I was initially concerned due to some low reviews, there was absolutely nothing to worry about. The accommodation had many young and international staff members, creating a lively atmosphere with perfect communication, service, and attentiveness. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious, with the desserts being especially delightful. I would love to visit again during the fresh green season.

    Too disappointing.

The room had a musty smell, and the Onsen was underwhelming. The meals were overly salty, making the ingredients feel wasted. After dinner, I requested coffee with milk, but the milk never arrived. When I asked, "Is it still not here?" a staff member responded without apology and seemed indifferent. Frustrated, we left our seats without any acknowledgment from the staff as if we didn’t exist. Even when retrieving our coats that were checked in earlier, we had to take them off the hangers ourselves. This level of service is simply unacceptable. The only positive experience was with the parking staff who left a very good impression.

    The atmosphere is a bit...

About three years ago, I stayed at Villa 1/F for a Multiple Night Stay and had a very relaxing and comfortable time, so this time I decided to try the Retreat. I was surprised that over 70% of the guests were from overseas, and perhaps because of this, many of the staff also seemed to be from abroad. While everyone was polite in their service, including Japanese staff members, I felt that the level of hospitality wasn't as high as during my previous visit, which was a bit disappointing. There were instances where orders weren't processed or requests had to be repeated twice, giving an impression of insufficient coordination among staff. The meals were delicious and enjoyable at a leisurely pace. Both dinner and breakfast were satisfying. As for the Onsen, it felt like the outdoor bath was slightly cooler than the indoor bath. However, since it was almost like having it all to myself, I could relax deeply and felt my daily fatigue melt away. The Room and bathroom amenities overall felt somewhat lacking compared to expectations; however, I loved the thick socks with cute designs provided at check-in. They even sell similar ones as souvenirs—what a great idea! The cookies available at the café were incredibly delicious—I even danced alone in my Room out of sheer joy! They are truly that good. To fully enjoy doing "nothing" in peace here again next time... two nights would definitely be ideal!

    Something seems to be missing.

Our accommodation is designed with a Scandinavian theme, offering a concept of relaxation surrounded by nature. Upon arriving at the facility by car in the evening after dark, it was unclear where to park. After waiting for about 5 minutes, an international staff member came to guide us but only provided verbal instructions without using a map. This led to confusion as we initially parked in the wrong spot and were told to move further inside. Considering the dimly lit and hard-to-navigate location, clearer guidance with a map would have been helpful. During check-in, we learned that all guests receive original socks as a gift; however, my partner's chosen size was unavailable at that time. We were informed it would be handed over after check-out due to stock being stored elsewhere. Unfortunately, no mention of this was made during check-out until we brought it up ourselves—only then were we asked to choose another size due to unavailability. If certain sizes are not available from the start, this should be communicated upfront. The meals were delicious and enjoyable; however, there seemed to be inconsistencies in service—for example, not informing us about drink upgrades initially—which left room for improvement in hospitality standards overall. With many international guests staying here frequently (possibly catering more towards inbound tourism), small gestures like confirming details such as "Is this price correct?" could enhance customer satisfaction significantly.

The Hotel I was interested in

I chose this place because I had some time off during the holidays, it was raining, and I wanted to relax and unwind in the Room. The experience turned out to be excellent. The Room was simple and minimalistic. However, due to the building's structure, footsteps and noises occasionally echoed. Since I'm picky with food, I opted for room service instead of a course meal. The portions were larger than expected; having both potato chips and French fries was a bit much for me. A menu with photos would have been helpful. Breakfast was stylish, delicious, and truly impressive—the burger was exceptional! The public bath had a soothing aroma of cypress wood, and the water temperature was just right for relaxation; I ended up soaking longer than planned. Next time, I'd like to visit during a different season and stay in one of the villas!

    Staff available to answer calls

This is my second stay, and I always appreciate the wonderful space and service. It might be suitable for inbound travelers.

I used this Hotel for his birthday, but there were a few disappointing points: 1. Board games are not supposed to be taken to the Room, yet Jenga was missing. When I inquired with the staff, they said, "It's actually not allowed to take it out... sorry." I wish there had been stricter reminders about this rule. 2. I requested a surprise cake to be brought to the Room after dinner, but due to poor timing, it was returned before we could receive it at an appropriate moment. 3. (Not related to Hotel management) In the public bath's open-air section, some guests were watching videos at high volume while bathing. Additionally, the quality of food was low (especially dinner), and many staff members struggled with Japanese communication skills. Overall, it felt underwhelming. The Facility itself was very beautiful!

    Severely deteriorated

The accommodation is now fully focused on inbound guests under new management. While it is understandable that staff services and free amenities may be reduced for cost-saving purposes, significantly diluting the onsen without prior notice can feel misleading from a guest's perspective. Although there is no mention of "natural hot spring water," if the onsen water is mixed with non-onsen water, it should be clearly stated.
