    I was more satisfied than I expected.

    We stayed here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The Onsen was excellent, and the meals were absolutely delicious! The service was attentive, and we had a very comfortable stay. Thank you very much.

    It was a wonderful Accommodation!

    We stayed as a family of three—two adults and our 10-month-old son. Incense was burned throughout the building, and both the lobby and our Room had a pleasant fragrance that made the atmosphere very comfortable. In the lobby, we could enjoy coffee and herbal tea at any time, which allowed us to relax. For meals, we were provided with a private dining room, so we could take our time without worrying about other guests. The portion sizes were just right, and every dish was delicious, featuring seasonal and local ingredients. We used both the in-room bath and the large public bath, and each was wonderfully relaxing. For our child, they prepared diaper supplies, a baby futon, a baby bath, and more. During meals, they also lent us children’s tableware and cutlery. The staff provided attentive hospitality throughout our stay, and we truly had a wonderful time. We would definitely like to stay again. Thank you very much for such a lovely experience.

    Second stay

    I was soothed by the mountain views and the fragrance at the Accommodation, and I wanted to visit again, so I came back with my family a year later. All of the staff were pleasant enough in a neutral way, but they couldn’t answer my questions right away, and there didn’t seem to be any information about returning guests. The shop also had many items out of stock. Rather than raising prices because there are many complimentary services and large portions of food, I would like higher-quality service. The Room is small for three people. That Room should be set for two guests. I thought I had booked the same Plan as last time because the view from the Room was great before, but perhaps I made a mistake—this time it was on a different floor and I couldn’t see the same view, which was disappointing. Also, I forgot something behind, but the staff member on the phone was careless as well. They said it was probably this item so they would send it and asked me to check it when it arrived—sent cash on delivery. If it wasn’t actually my lost item, then only my cost increases. I felt nothing but deep disappointment. However, I was comforted by the view from the lobby and the fragrance inside the building. I learned a lot as someone in a service industry myself. Thank you very much.

    Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t great, but we were able to relax.

    From check-in to check-out, everything was shrouded in fog. In its own way it felt magical, and the view of the trees from the Room was wonderful. Overall, it is a lovely Accommodation, and I would like to visit again—next time to enjoy the scenery around the Accommodation as well. There were a few minor issues that lowered my rating slightly. First, one amenity in the Room had been left out, but when I mentioned it, it was delivered immediately. I was impressed by how promptly this was handled. Another issue was that the scale in the large public bath had dead batteries and could not be used—I forgot to report this at the time. Lastly, it seemed that after refilling, the labels on the Room’s toner and emulsion did not match what was inside; they felt different from what I used in the large public bath. I meant to mention this at checkout but forgot, so I called after checking out so that future guests would not be inconvenienced. Aside from these points, my stay was very comfortable.

    Anniversary

    We stayed here for my wife’s birthday. Unfortunately, it was raining heavily due to a typhoon, so sightseeing wasn’t possible. I contacted the Hotel to ask if we could leave our luggage before check-in, and they kindly came to pick us up at the station we were heading to. It was pouring rain, so this was a huge help. When we arrived at the Hotel, they served us matcha and sweets. We enjoyed them in the lobby while taking in the view outside. The Room was very clean. Even though it was raining, there was an open-air bath as well, so we could still enjoy it on a rainy day. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. The staff who explained the dishes and served our meals were very cheerful, which made the dining experience even more enjoyable. In the evening there was free-flow alcohol and soft drinks, and in the morning they also offered morning champagne—great services for those who enjoy drinks. When I went to the large public bath early in the morning, no one else was there, so it felt like having it all to myself. It was a very spacious bathhouse with a great atmosphere; even with the rain, you could still see outside. There were also massage chairs plus complimentary ice cream and drinks—everything you could ask for. Next time, I’d love to stay again when the weather is clear. It was a wonderful Hotel with excellent staff—somewhere I would definitely like to return. Thank you very much.

    Consistently high quality

    This was our third stay as repeat guests. We stay with small children every time, and this Accommodation is very family-friendly. They can lend items such as a diaper trash bin, baby wipes, and baby soap. There is also a nighttime service with traditional Japanese snacks, which made our child very happy. The quality of the meals is consistently good, and the sashimi in particular is fresh and delicious. The bath in the Room also has a wonderful view, and the hot spring water quality is excellent, so we enjoyed it very much. All of the staff are generally kind and helpful, but the only disappointing point this time was how they handled a lost item. I accidentally left something in the lobby at checkout (of course it was my fault), and when I requested cash-on-delivery shipping, for some reason my two items were sent separately. Since that naturally increases shipping costs, I was honestly surprised by that decision.

    The Finest Accommodation

    Although we arrived in the rain, the staff greeted us with umbrellas all the way to both the driver’s and passenger’s seats, so we were able to check in almost without getting wet. Since we had left our own umbrellas in the car, it was great that neither the umbrellas nor the car interior got dirty. The moment we stepped inside, a pleasant incense fragrance filled the air, and checking in at the stylish, open lobby made us feel truly relaxed and pampered. Our Room came with an open-air Onsen bath fed directly from the source (free-flowing), with excellent water quality that melted away fatigue. When I used the large public bathhouse, no one else was there. I went again after dinner and in the morning as well, and it was still empty. With fewer than 20 Rooms and every Room having its own open-air bath, I imagine most guests don’t bother coming to the public bath. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to unwind in peace. Both dinner and breakfast were outstanding—especially dinner’s saffron hot pot where you can enjoy seafood shabu-shabu style; it was delicious. What felt different from other Accommodation was how attentively our server added just the right amount of broth to our small bowls at perfect times, so we didn’t have to ladle it ourselves or end up drinking every last drop. Also, dessert served at the end of dinner was later brought to our Room so we could enjoy it there. Honestly, we were already full, so being able to have dessert in-room made me very happy. The incense we chose ourselves (which could be taken back to our Room) smelled wonderful and lifted our mood even more. I usually can’t sleep well at a first-time stay (at my most recent Accommodation I slept only about two hours), but here I fell asleep immediately. With such high standards for Onsen quality, dining, and hospitality overall, this was an Accommodation I’d love to return to again and again.

    A wonderful encounter with the amazing staff and a deeply soothing experience, comforted by the scent of sandalwood.

    My spouse and I, both avid travelers, stayed here for the first time. We arrived about an hour early because we were so excited, but we were warmly welcomed and invited to enjoy freshly brewed tea and seasonal fruit in the lobby. Vivid hydrangeas in blue, white, and green—and the gentle scent of sandalwood drifting through the building—made us feel at once that we had come somewhere truly special, and our anticipation soared. This time we stayed in the Room “Sen.” It was just the right size for two, and both the size of the private open-air bath and the water temperature were perfect. Because the terrace partition is made of glass with a slim railing, nothing blocks your view even while soaking. We could fully take in the spectacular scenery of Gora’s lush mountains and maple trees to our heart’s content—beer included (of course). Every dish we had was genuinely delicious. Items like “namafu noodles,” “blackthroat seaperch rice cracker,” and dishes topped with early-summer Tosazu vinegar jelly were exciting new discoveries—and each one paired beautifully with sake. Above all, the staff member who looked after us during our meal provided truly outstanding service: impeccable timing when taking drink orders, thoughtful sake cup suggestions, great recommendations for rice accompaniments, and even subtle consideration for me being left-handed. Thanks to this attentiveness, we enjoyed a comfortable and delightful time from start to finish. After dinner, we relaxed again in the lobby with complimentary coffee and alcoholic drinks while being soothed by that sandalwood fragrance once more. From the coffee machine in our Room to drinks in the refrigerator and their original sweet “Usuka,” services throughout both the Accommodation and inside our Room were exceptionally well stocked. My wife was especially thrilled that even the hair dryers (in both our Room and at the large public bath) as well as shower heads were all by ReFa. These careful touches really elevate overall satisfaction. For souvenirs, we picked up some fragrance items along with everything recommended by our dining attendant—“Squid & Kelp Furikake,” “Edo Okaka Ginger,” and “Hakone no Kakushi Aji.” We looked at each other thinking, “We have to buy these,” and ended up taking them all home (laugh). The warm message card included in our package also meant a lot to us. “Entrust your heart to an elegant, gentle fragrance as you spend your time—as if listening to sandalwood.” Just as these words suggest, we enjoyed a rich pace of life here—slowly иand deeply. We will definitely return. If you are looking for an Accommodation in Gora, this is without question one I can wholeheartedly recommend. Thank you for such a wonderful stay.

    Celebrating my mother’s 77th birthday here became an unforgettable memory.

    We stayed here to celebrate my mother’s 77th birthday. With only a small number of Rooms, it was very quiet and felt wonderfully private, allowing us to relax and unwind away from everyday life. The staff member in charge of our meals and Room was especially thoughtful; thanks to their attentive care and fine attention to detail, we had an extremely comfortable stay. Of course, all the other staff were also very pleasant, and the entire Accommodation was filled with warm hospitality. They also kindly helped us with my mother’s celebration and even celebrated with us, which became a cherished memory. The baths were excellent as well. We enjoyed a relaxing time in the open-air bath in our Room, and at the large public bath we could soak while admiring the beautiful garden, feeling wonderfully refreshed. We were also happy that there was a wide variety of complimentary drinks available to enjoy at any time during our stay. This is a wonderful Accommodation that truly makes you want to come back. I highly recommend it for special occasions. Thank you very much.

    We stayed here to celebrate my wife’s birthday.

    After letting them know in advance that it was my wife’s birthday, they served celebratory sekihan (red rice) and a dessert with a message. They also took photos for us at dinner, and the next morning at our breakfast table there was a photo with a heartfelt message from T, who took care of us. My wife was delighted. The meals were delicious and very satisfying. From the open-air bath in the Room, we could see the mountain where the Daimonji bonfire is held, and I ended up soaking in it again and again.

    I stayed at Byakudan in Gora, Hakone.

    We stayed at Hakone Gora Byakudan as a couple to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The Accommodation is not overly large, and everywhere—from the guest rooms to the entrance, lounge, and dining areas—has a modern, refined atmosphere. True to its name, there was a subtle incense-like fragrance in the air, making our stay extremely comfortable. Both dinner and breakfast were outstanding; “wonderful” is the only way I can describe them. The staff were all gracious and cheerful in their service. In particular, we truly appreciated the thoughtful, gentle attention from the female staff member who took care of us during our meals. We were able to spend a blissful time at this wonderful Accommodation. Thank you very much.

    Quality Time

    We stayed for one night over the weekend. Thank you for the hospitality worthy of the name “Byakudan.” As soon as we stepped inside, we were instantly drawn into a space wrapped in the fragrance of sandalwood. Rather than simply following a manual, each staff member welcomed us sincerely and treated us with genuine care so that we could enjoy a wonderful time—making it an exceptionally comfortable place to stay. The cuisine was truly “excellent” in every respect—color, flavor, texture, balance, and tableware. It wasn’t about volume or the number of dishes; each course evoked the season, Hakone itself, and the people who created it. Everything was delicious and a pleasure to enjoy. In the Room’s private indoor bath, we were able to soak at ease while watching lush green trees swaying in the breeze, listening to birdsong, and gazing at mountain ridgelines beyond a faint white mist. It was truly a luxurious time. It made me want to come again in autumn. Next time I visit again, I’m hoping this will become “my regular place in Hakone”!

    I’m satisfied.

    I’ve stayed at many places, but this is the first time I’ve been truly satisfied with the staff. Everyone was well trained and impressive. Also, since I didn’t see any foreign staff members, I received service that fully met my expectations. I was also surprised that most of the guests were international visitors. I’m sure it must be challenging, but the meals were delicious for Japanese guests as well, and I hope you will continue in this direction.

    We had a very comfortable stay. As for the Room, since four of us used it, the sink in the bedroom was a bit inconvenient because we had to be mindful of each other’s timing. I think it would have been easier to use without worrying if the sink were located near the toilet. Since there is only a mirror at the sink in the Room, it might be helpful to have additional mirrors if many female guests are staying. In the large public bath, there were two hair dryers and ReFa ones were provided, but drying takes time, so it may be a bit difficult when sharing with others. Regarding dinner in the evening, service became slower in the second half and there was a lot of waiting time, but the hospitality was good.

    I spent a truly enriching time.

    With my partner’s birthday coming up, we visited for the first time for a celebratory trip. When I made the Reservation, I mentioned it was a birthday getaway, and on the day of our stay we were told a Room had become available—so we were kindly upgraded at short notice. From Reviews, I had assumed every Room would be wonderful, but the one we stayed in truly exceeded expectations and left us deeply impressed. The Room featured refined interiors that beautifully blended warm wood tones with Japanese style, and everything about the layout was thoughtfully designed for relaxation. It was incredibly comfortable. I usually prefer large public baths and don’t often use an in-room open-air bath, but this time it was fed directly from the source with free-flowing Onsen water. Being able to step in whenever we wanted—and with such perfect flow from the Room to the bath—made it effortless to enjoy again and again. The temperature was just right for us. The view from the lobby windows was even more beautiful than in photos, and the entrance was decorated with many hydrangeas as well. It felt like a waste to stay inside all day, so we borrowed a book by Kirin Kiki and relaxed in both the lobby and our Room while enjoying herbal tea. As others have written, the meals were visually stunning and absolutely delicious. Both dinner and breakfast were generous portions, yet never felt heavy—we truly felt nourished in both body and mind. For my partner’s birthday celebration, they also served sekihan (red rice) along with a message plate, and kindly took commemorative photos for us. At breakfast, when we found a handwritten note accompanied by an adorable origami ribbon placed for us, we were both touched by the staff’s thoughtfulness. With just-right attentiveness; polished yet warm hospitality; an exceptional Room; wonderful Onsen; and outstanding cuisine throughout—this became a trip filled with precious memories. We would love to return again. Thank you very much.

    Very satisfied

    This was my second stay, and I stayed in the JIN Room. The open-air bath in the Room was very relaxing, and the large public bath was also clean and comfortable. As soon as I entered the Ryokan, the pleasant fragrance set a welcoming tone, and the matcha tea and sweet bun served in the lobby were excellent. Both dinner and breakfast were generous portions and delicious. This is an Accommodation I would love to visit again.

    Hakone Onsen Anniversary Trip

    We stayed at Byakudan for the first time on our Hakone Onsen trip to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. The Shuttle Service—between our previous Ryokan and the property, and also to and from a restaurant for lunch—was handled kindly, which was a great help. True to the name of the Ryokan, a gentle incense fragrance filled the building and our Room throughout our stay, and everything was kept very clean. They also arranged a high-seat chair and cushions for my wife, who had recently undergone back surgery, allowing us to relax in comfort. Dinner and breakfast were both served by the same staff member, and there was more than enough variety and quantity. The flavors were just right for us as we prefer lighter seasoning, and we enjoyed everything along with local sake from various regions. In particular, the tofu salad with a large bowl of fresh vegetables at breakfast was a health-conscious dish you rarely find at other Ryokan. In the lounge, self-serve drinks such as herbal tea and coffee were available, and we were able to spend calm moments during our stay while enjoying the view outside the windows. The staff’s hospitality was attentive without being excessive, and we would love to stay again on our next trip to Hakone.

    We are a couple who ...

    We are a couple who love free-flowing natural hot spring Onsen. This time, we stayed in the “Sen” Room, and the soothing scent of incense in the Room was very relaxing. The best part was the open-air bath in the Room—it was amazing. We soaked many times and enjoyed forest bathing with a refreshing breeze while sitting on the terrace chairs. One disappointing point was that the refrigerator in the Room did not cool well, so our drinks were not cold. Also, perhaps it was just by chance, but there were quite a lot of overseas guests; both the lounge and dining area were lively, and even while soaking in the open-air bath we could hear voices from the neighboring Room morning and night. There were times when it felt difficult to relax fully in the bath because of this. Still, thanks to the wonderful hospitality of the staff and delicious meals, we had such an enjoyable stay that we would love to return and try a different Room next time. Thank you very much.

    Three-Generation Family Trip

    We stayed here for our first Onsen trip with seven people: our eldest daughter’s family living in Canada, our younger daughter, and us as a couple. Thanks to the wonderful hospitality from all the staff, we had a great time. We were looking for a place where all seven of us could stay in one room. The open-air bath in the room was a favorite with our grandchildren and daughters, and they used it many times. Unlike the large public bath, we could adjust the temperature, which was perfect for small children. The view from the lobby was also lovely—we enjoyed coffee there and read picture books with our grandchild. All of the meals were fresh, very satisfying, and delicious. At breakfast we could choose grilled fish, served as if freshly grilled; my Canadian daughter’s partner said it was the best salmon he has ever had. We also really enjoyed the freshly cooked rice served in an earthenware pot. Thoughtful touches like baby wipes in the room and extra towels made us feel well cared for. We would love to visit again.

    Wonderful!

    To everyone at the Accommodation, thank you very much for your wonderful hospitality. Everything was exceptional, and I was able to give my father the best possible one-night, two-day trip. The female staff member who assisted us was simply perfect and treated my elderly parents with great care and courtesy, which truly made them happy. We were also impressed by the excellent hospitality of the male staff member who worked so tirelessly in every area, including the morning and evening drink service and cleaning of the large public bath. The meals were absolutely outstanding. From the beautiful presentation to the flavors and timing of each course, everything was flawless—we were moved again and again. My father is quite picky, so I may have caused some inconvenience, but you handled ingredient changes perfectly, for which I am deeply grateful. He praised it highly, saying, “This is the best Accommodation I’ve ever stayed at!” We will definitely visit again, and we look forward to seeing you then. Thank you very much.

    Relaxing Accommodation

    This was my first stay as a reward for my retirement. It was the first day of a long holiday weekend, and the Tomei Expressway was heavily congested, so we didn’t arrive in Hakone until after 2:00 p.m. We went straight to the Accommodation without stopping anywhere. Around Yunessun, the view suddenly turned completely white. We arrived at 2:30 p.m., but luckily a staff member was outside and kindly let us in. In the lobby we were served welcome sakura sweets and matcha, and we were shown to our Room a little early. The view from the lobby was also pure white and we couldn’t see anything—something to look forward to the next day. Apparently this happens a few times a year. Of course, even the “Dai-no-ji” that should be visible from the Room couldn’t be seen through the whiteout. The Room is compact, but perfect for two people. The open-air bath in the Room comfortably fit two, with just the right temperature, and we relaxed by soaking many times. The amenities in the Room were also excellent. At dinner, they kindly served each of us one complimentary alcoholic drink to celebrate my retirement. The timing of each course—bringing out the next dish just as we finished—was impeccable; honestly, it was the best service I’ve experienced, allowing us to truly enjoy our meal. They also offered a small serving of sekihan (red rice), which made us very happy with their thoughtful hospitality. Many dishes featured early spring ingredients and everything was delicious. They took photos of us at dinner and made them into cards displayed at breakfast; they turned out even better than similar keepsakes we’ve received elsewhere, and again showed great attention to detail. We stay at different Accommodations each time we visit Hakone, but this one was outstanding. The only disappointment—also mentioned by others—was that there was no send-off after checkout/payment. When we tried to leave a little later, no one was at reception and our shoes weren’t at the entrance so we couldn’t go home; once again it happened that a staff member passing by helped bring them out when we asked. It was 10:30 a.m., slightly earlier than checkout time, but I would have appreciated being asked whether we were leaving soon and having our shoes prepared. Other than that, everything was wonderful. It made me want to come back again for summer fireworks season.

    Sandalwood incense

    This was our second stay, and we returned as a family partly to buy the incense we’d grown to love. Just like last time, the meals for our children were thoughtfully prepared, and they happily enjoyed both dinner and breakfast. The staff always prepare message cards and small toys for them, which warms our hearts. Thank you as always. It was a little disappointing that the roof over the open-air bath was damaged due to heavy snowfall.

    A Ryokan with high-quality Onsen and warm hospitality

    The first thing that impressed me was the Onsen: the water quality was excellent and the temperature was just right, so I could soak for as long as I wanted and felt truly refreshed. Not only were all the dishes at both dinner and breakfast exceptionally delicious, but every staff member also provided outstanding service—this is a Ryokan I would love to stay at again.     A place I’d like to add to my list of regular stays in Hakone.

    For about 30 years, I’ve stayed at Onsen Ryokan several times a year. Since retiring, over the past five years I’ve been visiting nearby Hakone—sometimes twice a month—so I’ve probably been there more than 100 times. This was my first stay at Byakudan. I was very satisfied with everything: the hot springs, the cuisine, the service, the Room, and the lobby. Some Reviews are quite critical, but as with other luxury Ryokan, it’s difficult for every aspect to be perfect all the time, and occasional issues can happen. During this stay, however, there were no problems at all. From the sincere guidance by the staff to checkout, I had a comfortable and relaxing time. In particular, both the large public bath and the in-room bath had wonderfully soft-feeling water with an ideal temperature—I could soak for a long time without feeling tired. I would love to return and make this my regular Accommodation in Hakone.

    It was amazing!

    Thank you for upgrading us to the Jo Room when a vacancy became available. Both the Room and the open-air bath were wonderful, and we felt truly relaxed. Every meal was delicious, and it reminded us how great kaiseki cuisine is. It was a truly luxurious stay for just my mother and me. Next time, we’d love to return with my husband as a family!

    It was an Accommodation I’d love to visit again.

    Thank you very much for your hospitality the other day. As soon as I entered the building, the scent of sandalwood soothed my mind. True to the Accommodation’s name, it was a wonderful space. The bath in the Room was spacious, and I was able to stretch out and relax at length. Each dish of the meal was delicious, and I enjoyed every course. All of the staff were extremely courteous—from kindly guiding me as I parked in the front lot, to a very smooth check-in process, and a careful escort to my Room. When I left my luggage in the Room and was browsing items at the shop, a young male staff member who had carried my luggage from the car addressed me by name (“Mr./Ms. ○○”), which made me feel warmly welcomed. Not only that staff member, but all of the younger staff showed truly outstanding hospitality. In particular, when I asked a young staff member assisting with dinner about drinks that would pair well with the meal, they not only recommended an excellent choice but also shared deep knowledge about it, which I found very satisfying. There were many younger staff members at this Accommodation, and their smiles were truly comforting. Both facilities and service exceeded expectations—an Accommodation I would definitely like to visit again.

    We stayed in JIN’s Room as a family. It was fun being able to choose the Room fragrance ourselves. The open-air bath was also spacious and wonderful. The Room, dining area, and public bath were all clean, with a calm, wood-themed atmosphere that made it very relaxing. In the lobby, we enjoyed coffee and drinks while taking in the view of the Daimonji-yaki mountain range at a leisurely pace. The sweets provided in the Room were incredibly delicious, so we bought some as souvenirs to take home. The meals were excellent, and there was a wide selection of alcohol as well, which we really enjoyed.

    It was a soothing trip that delighted all five senses.

    I booked Byakudan to unwind and recharge. I fully enjoyed the free-flowing Onsen, and had a relaxing environment where I could take my time in the Room. Personally, I really appreciated the wide selection of herbal teas and other non-caffeinated drinks. Delicious meals that made me feel the early spring season. Magnificent Hakone views from the window. Kind staff. Complimentary alcohol while watching the fireplace. It was my first time staying at an Accommodation where I could enjoy incense whenever I liked, and thanks to that, all five senses were truly soothed, making it a time that left me feeling ready to do my best again. Too much service or constant check-ins can sometimes feel overwhelming, so I felt that having many options prepared and letting guests choose freely leads to higher satisfaction. I will visit again. Thank you very much.
