    I was satisfied, but.

My first stay since the Laforet days. The open-air bath in the Room, which didn’t exist back then, was incredibly relaxing and wonderful. It is a bit of a hassle to walk to the main building for meals and bathing, but you can enjoy a different Onsen, and the breakfast offers a wide variety of options—everything was delicious. One disappointment: the shower fixtures in the large public bath are wobbly. They should be fixed as soon as possible—it’s such a waste. At breakfast, the seats right in front of where you pick up food don’t feel relaxing, and they also bump into chairs from the seats behind, making it uncomfortable for both sides. I wish the layout had been designed more from guests’ perspective. Disappointing.

    The Room was small, ...

The Room was small, but it was a shoes-off style, and the private open-air bath in the Room felt nicely secluded. Being able to get cold water and adjust the temperature was also very helpful with children. It would be even better if the water purifier could dispense colder water. Below are the disappointing points. When we arrived around 5:00 PM, the futons had already been laid out. Since the Room isn’t large, two futons made it very cramped, leaving no space to relax. (I’m very sorry, but we asked for them to be put away once. We apologize for the inconvenience.) No welcome drink. The restaurant left by far the worst impression: Even though we arrived exactly at our Reservation time, 10 minutes after being seated there was still no kids’ lunch plate. We were told the kids’ soup was pumpkin soup, but it tasted strongly of paprika (?) and wasn’t well received. Even though my child said they were cold and wrapped a napkin around themselves, no one mentioned that blankets were available (we only found out when we saw a blanket being brought to the table next to us). Drinks were extremely expensive. The sirloin was very greasy and caused indigestion during the night. The scallops I had been looking forward to were only half a piece and felt disappointing in quality. At breakfast buffet, I took a tray that had been placed under the shelf where food was set out—together with dishes—and used it while serving food with my child. A staff member told me not to use it because it was for employees only, and instructed me to take what I had picked up back to our table immediately. After that, they didn’t come with me or collect the tray anyway. If guests aren’t allowed to use it, please don’t place it together with guest dishes in an accessible area—this felt unkind. Overall, I felt that I just didn’t mesh well with the restaurant staff. That said, the person who assisted us at North Wing checkout was wonderful—very attentive and kind enough to speak up about small details—and thanks to them we left feeling good in the end. Thank you very much.

This is the Accommodation I want to make my regular place to stay in Karuizawa.

I chose this Hotel because I wanted my elderly father, who has trouble walking, to enjoy an Onsen, and the Room had a private Onsen. When I mentioned that he struggles with steps, they kindly took photos and sent them to us, so we were able to visit with peace of mind. The Onsen is small but open-air, and it felt wonderful. He was truly happy to be able to soak in an Onsen again after a long time. Every dish was delicious, and there was more than we could finish—we were very satisfied. Above all, every staff member was extremely kind, and we had a very comfortable stay. It’s also convenient because there is Shuttle Service from the station. We would definitely like to visit again.

The breakfast was delicious, and I felt relaxed after the Onsen.

Because a group Reservation came in, we were upgraded to a Room with a private open-air bath. The bath temperature was perfect and truly relaxing. We stayed for two nights, and we enjoyed the wide variety of breakfast options. The staff were also very friendly and welcoming. We used the gym as well, and it was convenient because we could go straight to the large public bath afterward. Since it was drizzling, it would be even better if there were an easy covered passage between the North Wing and the Main Wing. Next time, we’d like to add dinner too. Thank you very much.

    It was an amazing stay!

This was our first stay, a 3-day/2-night trip to fully enjoy Karuizawa with my wife. Check-in via IKYU.com was very easy and smooth, and the front desk staff were excellent. Our Room faced a major road, but thanks to the double-glazed windows it was perfectly quiet, and we were very satisfied. Most importantly, the meals were just right in both quality and portion size. We were also comforted by the warm hospitality and smiles of all the dining staff, and truly enjoyed our conversations with them. Regarding my allergy needs, information sharing among the staff was thorough, and they responded to our requests flexibly and thoughtfully. The only disappointment was that the sound of guest room doors closing was quite loud—surprisingly so even from inside—and it woke me several times early in the morning. I strongly recommend adjusting the door closers. As an aside, I believe it was thanks to your Hotel that I was able to set a new personal best while playing a round of golf during our stay. My wife also said she would definitely like to return, so we look forward to your wonderful hospitality again next time. I am truly grateful for such a great “husband points” trip (laugh). Wishing your Hotel continued growth and success in the future.

    Stayed in the North ...

Stayed in the North Wing with a private open-air bath during Golden Week. One night for two people with breakfast only (no dinner) cost JPY 100,000. Given that this is priced like a top-tier Ryokan, I arrived with high expectations—but I was so disappointed that this is my first time writing an Accommodation Review. Disappointment 1: Zero service No welcome drink or sweets. They carried only the luggage with wheels; they did not help with any other bags. If anything, I wanted them to carry the hand-held bags rather than the wheeled one. Also, although there is a Shuttle Service bus, during Golden Week it ran to/from Naka-Karuizawa Station instead of Karuizawa Station, and with limited train and bus schedules this resulted in wasted time. There were no activities or day-trip tours at all. At this price point, this level was shocking. Disappointment 2: Zero on-site facilities If access is inconvenient, you would at least expect impressive Facility offerings at a luxury-priced Hotel—but there were none. No well-maintained beautiful garden, no lounge, and the lobby was just a simple reception counter. There wasn’t even a shop; we were directed to a Seven-Eleven about a 15-minute walk away. For families, there’s nothing to do after arriving and it gets boring. Guests under 18 can’t use the gym, and there’s no play area either. Disappointment 3: Zero amenities Only thick, oversized bamboo toothbrushes that were hard to use and an unbranded T-shaped razor—on par with a low-end Business Hotel. I was surprised there was no toner/lotion, shower cap, hair ties—nothing—so I asked the front desk. They produced a shower cap and an unfamiliar no-name pouch skincare set. No hairbrush or cotton swabs were provided; they said they had no hair ties and handed me rubber bands meant for luggage tags instead. At this price point I would expect luxury-brand amenities (e.g., Bvlgari), and that’s part of what makes staying at a Hotel enjoyable—so it was really disappointing. The Room wasn’t beyond expectations but it was clean and not cramped; the Japanese-Western style layout felt practical? It felt more like Laforet for families than anything luxurious. The private open-air bath in the Room had about the same-sized tub as one for home use and used recirculated water system-style circulation, which was also disappointing. In front of the open-air bath area there was more of an overgrown patch of weeds plus privacy walls—no view at all. Breakfast was average—nothing luxurious or special. This was by far the worst value-for-money Hotel experience I’ve had—one disappointment after another. If I didn’t know the price it would have been an okay stay overall, but it simply isn’t worth what they charge. A fair price would be around JPY 20,000 per person. Give me back half my money!

    Regarding support at Karuizawa Marriott

Thank you for your support. This is my first time posting. To be frank, the Hotel was not clean. First, the bath: although it is a recirculating system, it did not feel hygienic. The bath windows were not clear, and there was limescale on the metal fixtures around the sink. I’m sorry to say this, but it seems I mistakenly made a Reservation for a Plan that does not include lounge access. On the first day, since we were not aware of this either, we used the lounge. However, when my wife went to the lounge on the evening of our second night, she was told that “this Plan does not allow lounge use.” In my view, a top-class hotel professional should be considerate enough to ensure guests never feel uncomfortable in any situation. Although this was our mistake, we will not stay here again. (Thank you to the young staff member who helped us at the restaurant.)

    It was disappointing.

I used to think Marriott Hotels were on par with Hilton and Hyatt, but this was completely different. Or is the Karuizawa Marriott Hotel an exception? The property has two buildings, the Main Building and the North Wing. We chose the North Wing for a Room with an open-air bath. The reception desk was surprisingly basic, and the welcome drink was hot apple juice served in a small paper cup like you’d get at a sake tasting. The Room itself was a Japanese-Western style layout, more like a Ryokan than a Hotel. The Onsen open-air bath uses a circulation system, so it had a strong chemical smell like a chlorinated pool, which was disappointing. The large public bath is in the Main Building, and to get there you have to walk about 40 meters outside in freezing Karuizawa weather. You cool down immediately. Dinner is also in the Main Building, which made things even more inconvenient. Dinner was a French course meal, but my salmon tasted completely different from my mother’s—mine was overly salty like boxed grilled salmon rice, while hers tasted as expected with the sauce provided. I have no idea why there was such inconsistency; it was very disappointing. After dinner, the Earl Grey tea had color but no aroma or flavor at all. Even though it’s course dining, the restaurant is essentially the same venue used for the breakfast buffet, so there’s no real atmosphere. We also walked through sub-zero temperatures for breakfast. There were no particularly special items or standout dishes. I asked for roasted green tea as well, but it had almost no taste or aroma—just like the tea at dinner. Everything was disappointing. I had another Reservation for June, but I canceled it.

    The room featured an...

The room featured an open-air bath with onsen water, but the quality made us question if it was truly an onsen. Since this is a hotel and not a ryokan, it might be understandable, but it did not meet our expectations, leading to a lower rating. The room design was dominated by the bed, leaving no space for a sofa; we had to use the bed as seating instead. The bathroom included a semi-open-air bath beyond the shower area. While labeled as an onsen, there were no details about its benefits or properties—it felt more like just hot water in an outdoor tub. It also felt slightly cramped for two people to use together. For meals, we had to go to a restaurant in another building outside of the hotel entrance. This required dressing warmly as walking outside in light indoor wear would have been too cold—this information should ideally be included in accommodation details beforehand. Dinner was served as a course meal but didn’t seem to feature local ingredients prominently; it felt disappointing considering we traveled all the way to Nagano. However, the craft beer was excellent. Breakfast was buffet-style with Japanese, Western, and Chinese options available—a standard offering for hotels of this type. We ordered omelets during breakfast and were told they would be brought to our table; while one arrived promptly, the other never came despite waiting until we gave up and returned to our room full from other dishes. As Marriott Hotel credit card members who had wanted at least once-in-a-lifetime experience staying here—we concluded that this stay did not leave us wanting another visit anytime soon.

    The breakfast buffet is excellent.

I visit this Hotel every summer. This time, I came during the autumn foliage season, and it was amazing as well! I usually enjoy the Onsen with an indoor bath on the second floor in summer, but this time I tried the outdoor Onsen on the first floor. The outdoor Onsen is truly exceptional from autumn to winter! From next year, I plan to visit Karuizawa twice a year—both in summer and autumn!

Both dinner and breakfast were very delicious. The restaurant staff were all polite, soft-spoken, and very pleasant. Since it was a day with strong wind and rain, I couldn't visit the main wing's large public bath at night, but the open-air bath in the room was small yet sheltered from most of the rain, allowing me to enjoy the Onsen at my own pace.

For the first time in two years

It was my first stay in two years. The Onsen and the room were as wonderful as ever, and I thoroughly enjoyed the private bath in the room until just before check-out. The children were disappointed that the candy capsule machine and churros at the front desk were no longer available. My husband also seemed disappointed that the nighttime rice porridge service was gone. It seems the shampoo bar in the public bath has also been discontinued. While I understand this may be due to rising costs, it was a bit disappointing that some of the things we were looking forward to were no longer available. The staff were very kind and attentive, but during breakfast, we were seated in an area where families with babies seemed to be grouped together. It was difficult to enjoy a calm meal, which was unfortunate. (This is my third stay here, and it’s the first time I’ve been seated in such an area.) Both of my daughters are elementary school students, and since we paid accommodation fees close to adult rates, I would have appreciated more consideration. (My younger daughter in 3rd grade was offered a baby chair and looked like she might cry.) Additionally, when I got up to get food from the buffet, staff members who had shown us our seats followed me with cups for everyone and asked whether we wanted coffee or tea. This caught me by surprise. Aside from that one incident, all other staff provided their usual warm-hearted service. Thank you very much!

    Thank you

I stayed at the accommodation to celebrate my mother's special occasion, and she was very pleased with the warm messages and gifts from everyone. Due to her age, it is difficult for her to enjoy an onsen, but she was delighted with the room that had an open-air bath. The room was spacious and comfortable, and breakfast offered a wide variety of options, including local ingredients that we thoroughly enjoyed. We travel to Karuizawa every six months, and I feel this is a hotel we would love to visit again. Thank you very much!

    I had a relaxing time.

Upon arriving at the Hotel, I was delighted by the friendly guidance with hand gestures as I moved from the Main Wing to the North Wing for my accommodation. Entering the lobby, I was greeted by a pleasant fragrance that immediately put me in a relaxed mood. On my way back from running, when caught in the rain and entering the lobby, I was promptly handed a towel, which I deeply appreciated. I thoroughly enjoyed both the bath in my room and in the Main Wing. However, it would be great if towels were provided in the bathing area. Lastly, I sincerely thank you for your kind assistance through email prior to my stay.

It was a great summer vacation.

We stayed in a room with an open-air bath. Although we hesitated due to the price during the high season, we are glad we chose this accommodation. Reviews can vary depending on individual past experiences, but our family had a very satisfying two-night stay. The open-air bath in the room was compact, but it was refreshing to bathe while enjoying Karuizawa's cool morning air right after waking up. We used it multiple times during our stay, which helped us feel completely refreshed and free of travel fatigue. Since we checked beforehand what amenities needed to be brought along, there were no issues. The hotel's policies are clearly stated, and personally, I found the level of service just right as I don't prefer excessive attention. The staff created a pleasant atmosphere by communicating well with each other even during the busy season. I felt it struck a perfect balance between luxury and friendliness. Thanks to this, my family seemed relaxed throughout our stay. During dinner, they carefully accommodated food allergies as well, and overall their service conveyed sincerity. We would love to visit again in another season!

    A Long-Awaited Return

The open-air bath in the room was not very impressive; it was a circulation bath. Dinner steak was delicious. Breakfast was average. I don't think the cost performance is very good.

    Unfortunately,

Due to a sudden change, my child returned on 7/2 and was able to join the trip to Karuizawa. Since the Room listed on IKYU seemed suitable for adding one more person, I considered calling for consultation but decided to contact the Hotel directly as suggested. The Hotel confirmed that adding one person was possible but mentioned an additional charge of around 20,000 yen. I reluctantly agreed. On the day of arrival, due to a heatstroke-related emergency in the afternoon, we arrived at the Hotel past 6 PM. We were informed that there would be an extra fee called a futon set fee if we wanted bedding laid out; reluctantly, we agreed. Although they said they would carry our luggage to the Room, it was only about 5 meters from the front desk with no guidance provided into our Room. Frustrated by waiting too long, I ended up carrying my luggage myself. In total, it cost over 90,000 yen for what turned out to be a disappointing one-night stay in Karuizawa. I wish IKYU.com had a dedicated phone consultation service available!

    Repeat Done!

The room with an open-air bath allowed us to enjoy the Onsen multiple times at our leisure. For dinner, the complimentary upgrade to Shinshu Premium Beef Fillet Grill, a benefit of being an IKYU Diamond Member, was absolutely delicious. Breakfast featured many local ingredients and was equally satisfying. The Hotel staff provided excellent service—neither too formal nor overly casual—making our stay very comfortable. Overall, it was nearly perfect; however, since the North Wing is slightly distant from the main building with the restaurant, it might feel inconvenient in bad weather, so I deducted one point. Nevertheless, I enjoyed my stay so much that I’ve already made a Reservation for the autumn foliage season!

We stayed in a Room ...

We stayed in a Room with an open-air bath (1st floor). The bath was excellent, but the view beyond the garden was just a wall. While it’s understandable that privacy is prioritized, it felt like a bit of a missed opportunity. The meals featured plenty of local specialties, showcasing the charm of Nagano Prefecture. They were delicious. We didn’t use the large public bath as we had to walk there in casual clothes and carry an umbrella due to rain. It would be nice if access were more convenient even during rainy weather (we used an umbrella for dinner as well). I knew there wouldn’t be a comb among the amenities, but since I forgot to bring one, I had to make do without—unfortunate!

    I had a great night's sleep.

The Room was spacious and comfortable with a cozy bed. The public bath was also pleasant. It would be even better if there were a sauna. Both breakfast and dinner were delicious and very satisfying. However, it was a bit disappointing that the Room amenities only included a toothbrush. The shampoo and conditioner in the public bath did not suit my hair, leaving it dry and rough. The welcome fruit platter in the Room was a nice touch. During dinner, I appreciated being able to choose filet steak as an IKYU special benefit, which normally costs an additional 2,000 yen. Breakfast featured several types of bread from Asanoya, which were delightful.

    Thank you for your thoughtfulness.

We stayed at the accommodation to celebrate a friend's birthday. Although I only briefly mentioned it during the reservation, we were surprised with a welcome fruit plate that had "Happy Birthday" written on it and a special dessert arrangement during dinner. My friend was delighted by the surprise. I feel a bit embarrassed for casually mentioning it, but we were deeply touched by such thoughtful gestures. The fresh greenery of Karuizawa, combined with the warm hospitality of the hotel and the private open-air bath in our room, made this trip truly relaxing and memorable. We will definitely return again. Thank you very much!

    It was a snow-viewing bath.

We stayed for one night in a room with an open-air bath, including dinner and breakfast. Although we didn't visit the large public bath, we enjoyed the private bath in our room multiple times, unexpectedly experiencing a snowy view while bathing. The room felt compact but was comfortable with a low table and floor chairs on tatami mats. Both dinner and breakfast were highly satisfying and delicious. We would love to stay here again when visiting Karuizawa!

    Very satisfied.

I am very satisfied with the various considerations made for my first trip in a while since falling ill. I am grateful to the general manager, head chef, and restaurant staff for their great care. I was able to relax and sleep well during my stay in the room. I also used the morning room bath, which was very pleasant. The front desk staff's greetings and attentiveness were very comforting. I would like to use your services again, so thank you in advance.

    Stayed in the North Building.

I can see that the staff at the Hotel are doing their best, but there were some disappointing aspects as a service industry, such as incorrect use of honorifics, wandering eyes during conversations, and wearing pants with unpressed hems. The lack of focus might be a side effect of the intercom system. I felt it was dangerous to cross the plain parking lot with poor footing to reach the main building with the dining area and bath, as there is no roof. The Room was clean, and the bath was good. It felt more like a high-end Business Hotel rather than luxury. The noise from families with children was beyond lively and was quite loud. I was surprised by the number of parents who didn't pay any attention, even though we also had children with us.

    New Year's in Karuizawa

Our family always searches for two main conditions: a king bed and a room with an onsen open-air bath, and then we travel. This often leads us to Marriott, and this time we stayed at Karuizawa Marriott. The facilities are new and clean, and the hotel staff is friendly. It is especially recommended for Diamond members. I deducted two stars because the open-air bath attached to the room and the large public bath were not sourced directly from the spring but were diluted, and the room's open-air bath was a bit small. However, if you don't mind these points, it is clean, comfortable, and pleasant. During the New Year, we enjoyed heartwarming services like being served mochi and having delicious sweets and coffee almost always available in the lobby, allowing us to relax and unwind. Thank you very much.
