This Accommodation truly let me fully experience the best of the Setouchi area. I stayed alone, but since the building itself feels like an art museum, time flew by—I wanted to stay much longer. The food was delicious, and the unique mini pairing was just right! All the staff were pleasant and attentive, and the view from the infinity pool was wonderful. Due to my condition I couldn’t soak in hot water, so I was able to relax in my underground Room this time. If you love baths, a Room with a semi-open-air bath would be better. Next time I’d definitely like to choose that Plan. I was also able to make an esthetic Reservation during my stay. The treatment was excellent, and the therapist’s personality was lovely—I enjoyed it very much. Thank you very much for everything!

    For a special day

We visited for a family trip to celebrate our daughter’s marriage. As it was formerly an art museum, we were overwhelmed by the meticulously designed building by Tadao Ando and the many artworks displayed throughout the property. The Room was extremely comfortable, and the pool we had been looking forward to was wonderful—we were able to fully enjoy this extraordinary space. We expected Western cuisine, but instead were delighted by beautifully refined Japanese dishes. The drink pairings matched to each course were perfect, and every dish moved us. The congratulatory wedding cake we had ordered was also truly delicious and became a wonderful keepsake. We sincerely appreciate the warm hospitality of all the staff. This is a superb Hotel where architecture, art, and food are all in harmony, and we would love to stay again.

    We had a relaxing stay.

We visited for a short summer getaway. The semi-open-air Onsen suite was wonderful—the room and bath were both spacious. Perhaps because of the higher elevation, it never got too hot on the terrace, and we enjoyed the view while having beer and other drinks. The dishes were beautifully presented and a delight to look at. The fish was delicious, and in particular, every vegetable dish was delicate with great texture—truly impressive. The staff were attentive while keeping a comfortable distance, and we were happy to enjoy many flavors of Ehime through both the cuisine and drink pairings. We also sincerely appreciate that you accommodated our requests regarding the meals as much as possible after discussing them in advance. Thanks to you, our family thoroughly enjoyed our two-night stay. The in-room refrigerator items and snacks also included many products from Ehime, making this a Hotel filled with love for Ehime.

    I am very satisfied.

I was truly comforted by the warm hospitality of all the staff, and it made for a wonderful stay. Mr./Ms. Izu and Mr./Ms. Kuda were especially helpful during meals. I felt that both of them provided excellent service. Even within a limited time, their warm desire to “welcome” and “delight” us as guests came through clearly, making it a truly heartwarming experience. The food was also delicious. We also used the pool, and being able to enjoy such a large pool privately became a great memory in my life. Overall, I was very satisfied with my stay. Thank you very much.

It was our first time trying Uwajima sea bream rice, and it was unbelievably delicious—so much so that even a month later we still find ourselves talking about how good it was. The sea bream rice with pickled plum was also outstanding. With floor-to-ceiling glass, the Room felt even more spacious. It had a unique atmosphere unlike any Hotel or Ryokan, giving us a truly special experience. We were also deeply impressed by the staff’s hospitality.

    Wonderful hospitality

As you’d expect from a design by architect Tadao Ando, the Room’s simple yet highly functional beauty made me happy just being there. All of the staff provided wonderful hospitality, exactly as expected. Both dinner and breakfast were outstanding and truly memorable. With checkout set at 12:00, I was able to relax and fully enjoy a leisurely stay. If I may suggest a few improvements: the infinity pool that always appears on the Hotel website was disappointing in person—the glass barrier where you look out to sea from the pool was very dirty, and when in the pool it didn’t feel like an infinity edge. Also, at dinner I ordered a pairing with four small pours; however, the fourth and final wine tasted extremely cheap. Since it was meant to be the closing drink, that was disappointing. When I said it didn’t suit my taste and asked if it could be changed, I was curtly told that an alternative would only be available if ordered by the bottle. It was only that one staff member, but it felt unprofessional.

An Accommodation that shows you the richness of true quality—so profound it can even change your values.

We stayed as a couple to celebrate my birthday. I have stayed at many Hotels, but Setouchi Retreat Aonagi was a truly special place that cannot be described by the words “luxury Hotel” alone. The beauty of the architecture, the view over the Seto Inland Sea, the quiet flow of time throughout the property, and the staff’s natural, warm hospitality—all of it was in harmony, and I could feel their sincere wish for guests to spend their time in comfort. The Room we stayed in with a semi-open-air Onsen bath left a strong impression with its spacious layout and garden terrace; it felt less like staying at a Hotel and more like being in a beautiful private villa. I will never forget grinding coffee beans myself and taking time to relax on the peaceful terrace. At dinner, I was also touched that my place setting was naturally arranged in reverse for me as a left-handed guest. Thanks to the staff’s thoughtful care, I was even able to see a beautiful sunset that I had given up on due to the rain—another unforgettable memory. When we checked in, I felt slightly uneasy, wondering if this Accommodation might be too luxurious for me. By the next day, however, I felt an incredible sense of ease—as if the entire Hotel had quietly welcomed us in. “An Hotel that can even change your values” felt like exactly the right way to describe it. This is an Accommodation I would absolutely want to visit again for a special anniversary or as a reward for myself.

    A Hotel Worth Visiting

We stayed the first night on a Plan with an included spa treatment. The technique was flawless, and my husband fell asleep right away (lol). If I had to ask for one thing, it would have been even better if we could have returned to our Room wearing our bathrobes. Both nights included breakfast and dinner. Every dish was delicious, and the sesame tofu at dinner on the first night was outstanding—I don’t think you can find anything like it elsewhere. The sommelier was also a very fun person, and it became an unforgettable 60th birthday celebration for my husband. Thank you very much. We’d love to visit again in a season when we can use the outdoor pool. We look forward to seeing you then.

Issues with how power outages are handled!

My trip was thrown into chaos by Typhoon No. 6… but, when it comes to natural disasters, it really drove home how helpless we are when modern utilities (electricity) aren’t available. I’d like to see improvements, as the staff did not provide adequate explanations or guidance for guests. I hope this Hotel will become more resilient in the face of disasters.

A luxurious stay in a museum—an extraordinary escape surrounded by art

I enjoyed the unique experience of staying in a museum. With only seven rooms on a vast property, it was a luxurious Hotel where every view felt picture-perfect—featuring original Frank Stella paintings, beautiful scenery, and a pool. Both the cuisine and service were first-class, making my entire stay comfortable and truly enjoyable.

It made me want to come back again.

We stayed in the Forest View Semi-Open-Air Onsen Suite under the “Setouchi Retreat Aonagi 10th Anniversary Plan.” After touring Matsuyama, we chose it at my wife’s request as a base for heading to the Shimanami Kaido—and it exceeded our expectations. The building was originally designed by Tadao Ando as an art museum and guesthouse for Daio Paper (Eliere Square Matsuyama), and has been renovated and operated as a Hotel for the past 10 years. With its exceptionally luxurious museum-like design, and with artworks still displayed throughout, we were able to enjoy an extraordinary escape in a serene space with attentive service. Although nearly 30 years have passed since its completion in 1998, Ando’s signature exposed concrete has been beautifully maintained. The way the spaces are carved creates exquisite compositions of light, and you can truly feel the architect’s intent. We visited Ando’s “Saka no Ue no Kumo Museum” before coming here, but this was moving on an entirely different level. The Room layout—one Room per floor—was spacious, with a full glass wall on one side that created an open, seamless connection to the outdoors. The semi-open-air bath also includes a reclining bath area, allowing you to warm up from the core. Including the shared spaces reserved exclusively for just seven groups per day, I don’t know of another Hotel that feels this luxurious while offering such outstanding value. The private pool included as a perk was also a lavish experience; however, I found the sauna temperature too low to work up enough sweat, which was slightly disappointing. Dinner was creative Japanese cuisine from the 10th Anniversary Plan and everything was delicious, but I was especially impressed by the “steamed abalone sesame tofu” served after the main course. There are many great dishes in life, but few make you want to come back just to eat them again—this sesame tofu did. Its texture and perfect pairing with the sesame sauce made me feel it would be worth even a five-hour trip just for that one dish. Breakfast also showed careful craftsmanship in every item. My thanks to the chef. Finally, all staff were wonderful as well—it made for an excellent stay. Thank you very much.

A one-of-a-kind experience you can only enjoy here

We stayed in a semi-open-air suite with a toddler. As the property is originally an art museum, we enjoyed a stay unlike that of a typical Hotel. The Room features windows over 5 meters high, offering beautiful views of the Seto Inland Sea and the sunset. From the semi-open-air Onsen, the sky felt close, and we were able to relax in a spacious setting while watching the clouds drift by. We also enjoyed the pairing course, savoring it alongside locally sourced cuisine. Traveling with a toddler may have caused some inconvenience, but thanks to your thoughtful consideration, we were able to stay comfortably without any issues. With the IKYU Diamond benefits, we were able to reserve the sauna and extra-large pool for private use, which was wonderful. Thank you very much.

Even the most remarkable architecture gains true value only when people are there.

We stayed here as the highlight of our 25th wedding anniversary trip, visiting Dogo, Roadside Station Futami, Ozu’s Garyu Sanso and a sake shop, and Uchiko-juku. Thanks to the first spring gale, the Seto Inland Sea looked almost divine; after watching the sunset, we enjoyed a swim in the pool. The chef’s signature hot-pot kaiseki was exceptional—beautifully presented spiny lobster, Shikoku specialties such as noresore, yellowtail, abalone, and more. We also savored the flavorful hot pot with its golden broth. We thoroughly enjoyed pairings not only with spirits from Japan and abroad but also with Shikoku sake. Above all, our warm conversations with the waiter were a true delight. The next day we also visited the Tobe-yaki pottery fair; my wife was thrilled to buy some tableware. We met many wonderful people and made unforgettable memories. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

    I will repeat.

The hospitality was outstanding, especially during dinner where the enjoyable conversations with the staff left a lasting impression. We opted for pairing, and on the second day, the sommelier's extensive knowledge and stories about the background of each drink made our meal even more delightful. Both breakfast and dinner were incredibly delicious and exceptional. While the facility and room showed some signs of age, everything was impeccably clean and very comfortable. When a bug entered our room, we requested assistance, and a staff member kindly took care of it without hesitation—something we deeply appreciated despite feeling apologetic. We also used the spa, which not only offered excellent treatments but also stunning views from its location. Additionally, with a limited number of rooms in this accommodation, there were few encounters with other guests. This allowed us to relax fully—it was truly one of the most impressive stays we've ever experienced. The room was so comfortable that we spent an entire day indoors; however, exploring art pieces within the facility, enjoying time at the library or spa, taking walks outside—all these activities made time fly by until evening arrived effortlessly. Thank you for accommodating our request to bring in a DVD player to our room as well! One point to note is that there is absolutely nothing around this area once you arrive here. It might have been better if we had purchased something for lunch at either Matsuyama City or near the airport beforehand since no lunch options were available at this accommodation. We'll keep that in mind for next time—but aside from this minor detail—everything else exceeded expectations! Thank you so much for your wonderful hospitality! Looking forward to staying again!

A museum you can stay in with a panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea.

About a 35-minute drive from Matsuyama Station, the property is located near a golf course, in a building that was originally an art museum. The standout feature is the infinity pool that seems to extend outward (available for swimming only in summer). At night, it is beautifully lit up, creating a magical atmosphere that may bring back forgotten memories. There is another pool available for private use by the hour. We reserved it during nighttime, which added to the exclusivity of the experience. Dinner was traditional Japanese kaiseki cuisine featuring dishes like shabu-shabu and matsutake mushroom dobin-mushi, both of which were delicious. Non-alcoholic pairings were also offered; the brown rice tea was particularly enjoyable. Breakfast was also Japanese-style with highlights such as flavorful dashimaki tamago (rolled omelet). Even the sweets provided in the Room were delightful. The view from our Room was exceptional, and having an entire floor to ourselves felt truly luxurious.

    Enjoyed a luxurious stay.

Thank you very much for your hospitality. Thanks to you, we were able to create another wonderful memory celebrating my wife's birthday at your accommodation. The flavors of the dishes were exceptional and matched our tastes perfectly, surpassing even high-end restaurants. Both my wife and I have become big fans and would love to stay again. We are also considering visiting other properties in your hotel chain. The young staff members were well-trained, and we were deeply impressed by their hospitality. We look forward to seeing you all again. Thank you very much.

I had a comfortable stay throughout my time here. The facility, meals, and service were all very satisfying. It was a long-awaited stay.

This was our third attempt due to typhoons, and we were finally able to stay this time. Both days had wonderful weather, and we enjoyed an amazing two-night stay as expected. The building, which used to be an art museum, had a unique charm, the room was spacious and comfortable, and everything including the meals was excellent. Above all, the thoughtful hospitality was exceptional. From assisting with the reservation at Elleair Golf Club Matsuyama to providing shuttle service to the airport before our departure, everything made us feel truly at ease during our stay. We would love to visit again. Thank you very much!

    Wonderful Hotel

Designed by Tadao Ando, this was a very charming Hotel. Previously part of an art museum, it featured beautiful art displays. It was unlike any Hotel I had stayed at before. The guest rooms were lovely, and the views were stunning. With only seven rooms, it offered a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. The onsen with free-flowing hot spring water was excellent as well. The meals were incredibly delicious, and the delicate dishes left me deeply impressed. The staff's hospitality was outstanding too. I would love to stay here again if given the chance. I am also interested in staying at other Hotels operated by Onkochishin in the future!

    Art within reach.

Stayed at this accommodation during a visit to Dogo Onsen. Located in Oku-Dogo, it is adjacent to a golf course but offers a quiet and peaceful stay away from the hustle and bustle. The highlight is its Ando architecture, with various art pieces displayed throughout the facility, creating a serene and relaxing atmosphere. It reminded me of my previous stay at Benesse House and visits to the Chichu Art Museum, allowing me to once again appreciate the beauty of Ando's architectural design. The room was spacious yet simple, perfectly aligned with the building's concept of minimalism—very appealing. The bath features a semi-open-air design with views of Setouchi’s islands floating on the sea and Honshu’s mountain ranges—a stunning sight. The onsen water has no noticeable smell but feels slightly viscous, making it very pleasant. There’s also a reclining bath area where you can lose track of time while relaxing. Meals were delicious, featuring ingredients from Setouchi as well as local specialties like Iyo Satsuma dishes. Every dish—from sea bream to barley miso—was delightful. Hospitality was impeccable; I especially appreciated detailed explanations about the art pieces and Tadao Ando himself. I believe this accommodation would be even more enjoyable when paired with visits during events like the Setouchi Triennale held every few years. Looking forward to visiting again!

The private pool was great as we could swim without worrying about others. However, some areas showed signs of aging, such as the pool changing room, Room furniture, sink, carpet, and elevator carpet. The staff were attentive while maintaining a comfortable distance, making our stay very pleasant. The meals were not particularly outstanding but were reasonably tasty and just the right portion size for us who eat small amounts. It would have been nice to have grilled fish for breakfast. Staying at an art museum was a unique and valuable experience that we couldn't find elsewhere. Thank you very much!

    My favorite accommodation.

This was my second stay. I couldn't forget the precious experience of staying in an Ando-designed accommodation, so I visited again. Although I wasn't feeling well (stomach issues) and couldn't eat meals, the staff kindly brought light snacks to my room despite the inconvenience caused. I truly appreciate their thoughtful and attentive care. I was able to spend a relaxing time. Thank you very much!

    A quiet and relaxing accommodation

This was my second visit. It is a quiet and relaxing accommodation no matter where you are in the hotel. The simple room interior, the view of the sea from the window, the local cuisine with a delicate yet flavorful broth, attentive but unobtrusive service, and art pieces throughout the building that make it feel like a mini art museum—all contribute to its charm. Above all, the building itself is an art piece. A wonderful accommodation I would love to revisit.

Feeling a bit unsure before your trip?

Highly recommended overall. Luxurious with a sense of privacy. The ANNEX rooms feature one room per floor, offering complete seclusion. Perfect for those who prefer not to encounter anyone else. A welcome champagne awaits on the table, and all drinks in the refrigerator are complimentary with a decent selection. The Onsen is sourced directly from the hot spring, providing excellent water quality for your skin. Bathrobes and samue are well-prepared for your comfort. Not only curtains but also large windows can be automatically opened and closed, allowing access to the balcony. We stayed on the third floor, where we enjoyed breathtaking views of mountains extending to Seto Inland Sea islands and beyond—truly spectacular scenery! Dinner features creative dishes made with local ingredients, offering a well-balanced culinary experience. The drink pairing is exceptional as well! This is one of the accommodations you should consider when visiting Matsuyama!
