    A relaxing mountain retreat where your heart can unwind

    Nestled in lush mountain greenery, this was an Accommodation where the mind truly unwinds. The Room, filled with natural light and comfort, offers beautiful views through large windows—and simply gazing at the greenery beyond makes you feel pleasantly removed from everyday life. Most memorable of all was the Onsen. As I surrendered to the water bubbling up from beneath my feet, its gentle mineral quality seemed to seep slowly into my body, and I could truly feel the unique restorative power of Tsuta Onsen. The meals featured an abundance of local Aomori ingredients, allowing us to savor the richness of the region in every dish. The tasteful calligraphy and paintings by Keigetsu Omachi displayed throughout the building also conveyed a deep sense of this Accommodation’s history. Nature, Onsen, cuisine, and culture. Spending unhurried time with my family while surrounded by all of it became an unforgettable memory. I would love to return with my whole family again in a different season.

    Rare natural spring water emerging at your feet

    This was my second stay at an Accommodation with a naturally flowing Onsen from the source, after one in a certain prefecture in the Kanto region. I had heard the water here is “hot,” but it was just right for me, and I enjoyed it many times. It’s also great that you can bathe all night. My skin felt wonderfully smooth. I love Onsen and travel around The whole country visiting many different ones. This time, I visited Aomori Prefecture for the first time to see a summer festival, and when it came to Aomori, I planned my itinerary thinking that I absolutely wanted to visit Tsuta Onsen Ryokan and Sukayu—even if it made the schedule a bit tight!! Driving would be convenient, but since it’s in the mountains and I imagined fog might be common, I avoided renting a car. The Shuttle Service to Shichinohe-Towada Station (I used it only for pickup; on the way back I took a local bus toward Aomori Station) was truly helpful and appreciated. The Room was kept clean and comfortable. Yukata and samue were available in many sizes, and everything felt very well taken care of. All staff members were calm and kind in their service—everyone was pleasant, which made me feel at ease. Meals… (Dinner) → The menu and presentation had a refined feel. Even the tableware was stylish, and everything was very delicious. It might feel a bit light for men with big appetites. (Breakfast) → The egg dish was comforting. The fresh vegetables were also tasty. My son enjoyed grated yam (tororo) over rice. Just one disappointing point: At checkout payment, the fee for using the private bath was not included. I pointed it out and paid, but has this kind of mistake happened to other guests as well? Since the rule is to make a Reservation after check-in during an available time slot, I thought it would prevent errors if you confirm whether guests want to use the private bath at check-in—and then Complete the Reservation along with payment for that fee at the same time.

    Satisfied

    Getting to the Ryokan by rental car was a bit challenging, but the baths, meals, and hospitality were excellent. In particular, the bath was a secluded Onsen that was truly relaxing. It’s an Accommodation I’d love to visit again.

    Forest Onsen

    We came from scorching Tokyo, and the temperature on arrival was around 20°C—like heaven! Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t great, but the vivid greenery wet with rain and the sound of rainfall were so soothing. The atmosphere of the charming building, the Onsen, the meals, and the hospitality were all truly wonderful. We’d love to visit again. Thank you very much.

    Among all the onsen ...

    Among all the onsen hotels in this area, Tsuta Onsen is one of the best and most classic choices. The service was excellent in a traditional Japanese style, and they even helped me park my car. Dinner and breakfast during our two stays were both delicious and varied. The onsen itself was also classic and very comfortable. Perhaps because the hot spring water comes directly from beneath the bath, the temperature stayed wonderfully consistent. It would be even better if the large light by the pond could be turned off at midnight—the stars would be amazing that way!

    I was soothed by the historic hot springs and the warm hospitality.

    This was my first stay. The historic building and calm atmosphere were very comfortable, and the location was convenient for sightseeing as it is close to Oirase Gorge and Tsutanuma Pond. The Onsen exceeded my expectations. The large public bath, “Kyuan-no-Yu,” is a free-flowing hot spring where the source water wells up from beneath your feet. The combination of slightly hot water and a cold plunge was fantastic, and during my stay I used both the public bath and the in-room bath a total of five times. The in-room bath was also nice, but for me “Kyuan-no-Yu” felt like it had better water quality, so I especially recommend it. Dinner was delicious, making great use of Aomori ingredients, and the sakura snow crab takikomi rice was outstanding. I was also happy to enjoy it with my favorite sake, “Dassai.” It left an impression that the head chef explained each dish as well—it really conveyed their hospitality. I also appreciated the thoughtful touch of having onigiri prepared as a late-night snack. The only disappointment was the filet steak: it tasted great, but the portion felt a bit small. With one or two more slices, I think overall satisfaction would be even higher. All staff provided excellent service, and they kindly accommodated a late check-out request. It was a wonderful Accommodation where I could be satisfied with everything—the Onsen, meals, and hospitality. I would definitely like to stay again when visiting Aomori.

    It’s average.

    The building is old, but the Rooms are kept clean. Dinner had a good variety of dishes, but it wasn’t particularly memorable. Overall, it was average. As for the Onsen, the main bath shown in the photos has no faucets, so even after getting out you can’t rinse off. The other gender-segregated bath does have washing areas, so I only used that one. You also have to bring the bath towel from your Room. Since that towel is then used to wipe your body right after coming out of the Onsen, it felt unpleasant. At minimum, I would like towels to be provided in the bathing area so guests can use a fresh one each time. Considering everything overall, I felt it was expensive for the Accommodation Fee.

    It was amazing, to say the least.

    The Onsen is simply outstanding. Piping-hot water bubbles up continuously. I especially recommend the private bath: the spring keeps flowing, so the tub overflows constantly and pleasantly warms the floor—perfect for a footbath too. The cold bath in the gender-swapped area is exactly what you need to feel refreshed. The meals were also a good portion size. It was a shame that the grilled chawanmushi had been set out from the start and was cold, but everything else was very satisfying. The basashi added with our Plan was also delicious. All of the staff were friendly and made us feel comfortable. We’d love to visit again!

    I’m amazed at myself for being able to choose a Ryokan like this.

    Because the Reviews were so positive, I knew this was the one and made a Reservation. I also noticed their cuisine was featured on Tabelog, checked those Reviews too, and thought, “If a Ryokan’s food makes it onto Tabelog, it must be exceptional!”—and it truly was. This trip was a gift for my parents, and after thorough research I’m genuinely glad we chose this Ryokan. Every staff member offered such warm hospitality. In particular, the manager and a tall gentleman with glasses were outstanding—thoughtful and flexible in responding to our needs. It felt like perfectly natural warmth you rarely experience at luxury Hotels in Tokyo. We left with a gentle sense of comfort. It felt as though this Ryokan—and its people—are rooted in living alongside Aomori’s great nature, and we were able to share in that way of life. A truly precious experience. We chose a Plan that included a private walk along Oirase Gorge with a guide, and it was absolutely the right decision. The guide was highly experienced in leading tours through the mountains of Tohoku—friendly and approachable—and adjusted the pace while considering our condition and preferences. With deep knowledge and engaging stories, both my elderly parents and my elementary-school-aged son enjoyed the three-hour tour comfortably. The Onsen was wonderful—just as other Reviews said. It’s the most memorable bath I’ve ever experienced. Ten years ago I would have chosen an all-in-one resort-style place packed with activities, but this time I felt quietly moved—not only by our stay here, but also by realizing how much my own tastes have grown to appreciate a Ryokan like this.

    The meals were disappointing. The appetizer was like a snack to go with alcohol, and since I don’t drink, it was too salty and sticky, and I didn’t enjoy it. Disappointing.

    A Long-Established Ryokan

    The hot spring water was as wonderful as rumored. The building also had a great deal of charm, and I was able to relax and take my time. Both dinner and breakfast made the most of local ingredients and exceeded my expectations. Tsutanuma Pond was also excellent. Next time, I’d like to visit during the autumn foliage season.

    A luxurious soak in spring water naturally filtered by Towada’s pristine landscape

    A renowned hot-spring retreat in Towada, cherished for generations by the people of Aomori who have lived alongside harsh winters and Towada’s nature. The Onsen water doesn’t have that typical “hot spring” feel, but its source is astonishingly clear spring water born from Towada’s natural environment. Being enveloped in this crystal-clear water is something you simply can’t experience at other hot springs—it has a charm that makes you want to soak again and again. At first it felt a little plain, but before I knew it, both body and mind felt cleansed. And it warmed me through properly—we were truly impressed, saying to my wife, “This water is incredible.” The temperature is on the hotter side at 42°C, and depending on the spring-water temperature and the weather, it may be 1–2°C hotter or cooler. The description says the water wells up without being exposed to air, and that its minerals may also help with bronchitis. By coincidence I was coming down with a cold and had early-stage bronchitis, but after just one night’s stay I could really feel how much better I was. We visited in May, when Towada’s fresh greenery bursts forth with life and vivid azaleas and irises are in full bloom. There were rocking chairs set out in a lounge-like area of the Facility, and it felt like spending unhurried time at my nostalgic countryside family home—I found it deeply relaxing. After enjoying the apple juice, ice cream, and sake prepared before dinner, we took our time savoring Aomori’s local bounty—carefully crafted by the head chef—at both dinner and breakfast. I was able to fully take in the quiet strength and charm of my hometown Aomori. The unpretentious hospitality—so very “Aomori”—also felt comfortable to me. In both good ways (and slightly less good ways), while keeping its character rather than focusing on appearances alone or overly polished service for guests’ satisfaction—and with some updates that give it a more modern touch of luxury—I’d love to return again once time has further deepened this place’s unique character. Or maybe I’ll come back soon again—this time bringing my mother.

    I’ve been to many Onsens, but with this bath, you can tell how good the Onsen is the moment you step in. At first, I thought it was simple with just one square bath, but it’s immediately clear they’re confident in the quality of the Onsen itself. It’s an Onsen I definitely want to visit again.

    An Onsen Ryokan nestled in the mountains, perfect for a restorative stay.

    After sightseeing at Hirosaki Castle and enjoying the cherry blossoms, we stayed at this Onsen Ryokan. It’s about a 1.5-hour drive, winding through the mountains along roads where walls of snow still remained; after passing Sukayu and driving a bit further, Tsuta Onsen Ryokan appeared—almost like a private house. The property is divided into a main building and an annex, and we stayed in the annex. Our Room was equipped with a semi-open-air Onsen bath and an O2 pressure chamber. Since the open-air bath faces toward the main building, it is screened with fabric so it cannot be seen. It was our first time using an O2 pressure chamber; although we didn’t feel anything immediately upon entering, both my wife and I felt we were able to sleep very deeply. The Onsen is a simple spring without any sulfur smell, and its smooth feel is extremely comfortable. For dinner, we had a private dining Room in the main building, where the head chef personally explained each dish. The meal—featuring plenty of local vegetables and meat—was truly delicious; the chef’s stories were very enjoyable, and his dedication to cooking could be felt throughout. We especially remember how tender and flavorful the filet (from Takko) was. Breakfast also offers a wide variety of dishes along with a buffet. This time we stayed only one night, but next time we would definitely like to enjoy a Multiple Night Stay.

    It was my first visit in a while.

    It had been a long time since my last visit, as it was before the West Wing was built. This time, I decided to revisit places I had enjoyed staying at in the past, and this Onsen came to mind first. It's been almost three months since my stay, but I still can't forget that Onsen. The meals were visually delightful and incredibly delicious as well. The staff's hospitality was excellent. I would love to stay here again if I have the chance. It was a very satisfying accommodation experience.

    The meals in the evening and morning were impressive. Please continue your dedication to local ingredients. The hallway lights are too bright at night, and the light leaks into the Room, making it hard to sleep. Please consider some adjustments, such as dimming or turning off the lights at night.     An accommodation worth visiting again.

    For my first trip to Aomori, I chose this accommodation hoping to enjoy the autumn foliage season. Although it was a bit early for the peak foliage, I was still very satisfied. During the autumn foliage season, a ticket reservation is required to enter the Tsuta-numa area early in the morning. However, guests staying at Tsuta Onsen do not need a reservation and can purchase tickets at check-in, which is an excellent service. Compared to luxury hotels in urban areas, the furnishings may not be as impressive here, but the service is just as good. The meals were delicious and came with explanations using a map showing where in Aomori each ingredient was sourced from. This added to our enjoyment of the food. In particular, we had tuna from Fukaura during this season—it was absolutely delicious! The presentation of grilled char fish was also outstanding and left us very satisfied. As for the onsen: since it's sourced directly from hot springs and naturally very hot, water is added to adjust its temperature; even so, it remained pleasantly warm and allowed us to relax thoroughly. Hand sanitizers were placed throughout the facility as part of their hygiene measures—this attention to detail was greatly appreciated. I would love to visit again someday. Thank you very much!

    Onsen is the best!

    I visited Tsuta Onsen for a day trip about 45 years ago and stayed this time. The old onsen was just as I remembered. The meals were very delicious, but I felt the portions were a bit small for me. The room and the staff's hospitality were excellent.

    An accommodation you'll want to visit again

    My wife and I stayed at this accommodation to revisit the memories we each had from our childhood visits. The main building is an old structure, but it is well-maintained and clean, allowing us to stay comfortably. The rooms in the main building include both "shared toilet and shared washroom" types that retain the traditional feel of the accommodation, as well as rooms equipped with private toilets. This time, we stayed in "Keigetsu no Ma," which has a private toilet. Keigetsu no Ma features modern facilities and feels like a typical tourist ryokan, providing a comfortable stay without any inconvenience. Being in the main building also meant that the bath was nearby, adding to our comfort. Dinner was made with locally sourced ingredients; it was delicious, perfectly portioned, and satisfying. Breakfast was served buffet-style with many dishes centered around local ingredients, making it more enjoyable than usual for us to eat breakfast. The staff were very polite and kind, allowing us to have an enjoyable and fulfilling time during our stay. Initially intended only as a trip down memory lane from childhood days, this accommodation left such a positive impression that we would love to return for another relaxing visit someday.

    A wonderful Onsen.

    Recently, I have tended to prefer staying at newly renovated accommodations or brand-new hotels. However, since there are few accommodations near the Oirase Stream, I decided to set this place as the first stop of my Tohoku trip after much deliberation. The photos on IKYU.com gave me an impression that it might be a bit outdated and unclean, and I was worried that being deep in the mountains might mean mediocre meals. But all my concerns were pleasantly overturned. The floors were sparkling clean, the mystical bath was unlike anything I'd ever seen before, the heartfelt meals were delightful, and the warm hospitality of the people truly touched me—I found myself unknowingly healed. The highlight of my Tohoku trip was Oirase Stream. Waking up at 5 a.m. to avoid crowds and driving just about 30 minutes allowed us to enjoy breathtaking waterfalls all to ourselves—a perfect start to our journey! Revisiting Oirase Stream brought back memories of when my family took me there as a child; it was incredibly moving to share this experience with my children. The wonderful breakfast afterward further enhanced our impression of this accommodation. Preparing such an excellent breakfast in such a remote mountain location must be challenging, but I sincerely hope they continue maintaining both their meals and facilities. One small thing that felt out of place was finding snacks like "Umaibo" or other cheap sweets offered alongside drinks—it didn’t quite match with how delicious their meals were overall. Also, lighter ice cream options would have been more fitting in my opinion.

    It was excellent.

    I booked a stay to enjoy the onsen, and it exceeded my expectations. The exterior of the building was charming, and the interior had a beautifully maintained traditional atmosphere. The room was clean, with a lovely view of greenery from the window. It had been nicely renovated, providing a comfortable space to relax. However, the TV was placed in an awkward position that made it difficult to watch if needed. Since I didn’t use the TV during my stay, it wasn’t an issue for me, but I thought perhaps rooms don’t need TVs at all when focusing on enjoying the onsen and natural surroundings. The onsen was unique as hot water bubbled up directly from beneath the floor—something I experienced for the first time and truly enjoyed! There were two onsens available; one alternated between men’s and women’s use. That particular bath also had a cold-water pool where I felt like I could soak forever. The meals were outstanding as well! Dinner featured local ingredients presented with great care and creativity. Breakfast was served buffet-style with an impressive variety of local specialties—it felt like exploring Aomori’s culinary delights without leaving one place! It inspired me to visit different areas in Aomori next time to experience more local flavors firsthand. The staff members were incredibly welcoming and attentive throughout my stay, making it truly memorable. Thank you very much for such a wonderful experience!

    The hot water is excellent.

    I enjoyed Kuan no Yu. If the timing is right, you can have it all to yourself, including the cold bath. The hot spring water was excellent. The breakfast buffet was outstanding, featuring vegetables, omelets, soup, fresh scallop dishes, and salmon with salmon roe in koji sauce. The Shamorock chicken on the second night's dinner was also delicious. I walked around Tsutanuma without prior knowledge and ended up enjoying a well-maintained hour-long stroll through a beech forest more than I expected. I stayed in the main building with sliding doors but had no unpleasant experiences thanks to considerate fellow guests. On rainy days, staff greeted each arriving guest with an umbrella at their car, showcasing great hospitality.

    It was my first visi...

    It was my first visit. While it is not a so-called luxury Ryokan, the service was very friendly, kind, and comfortable. The Katsura Room was also very cozy. The large public bath had impressive beams and a high ceiling, creating an amazing atmosphere! The quality of the hot spring water bubbling up from the ground was excellent, and I could understand why people were waiting in line for day-use bathing from early morning!

    The Onsen was as won...

    The Onsen was as wonderful as expected, but what exceeded my expectations was the delicious food. Centered around Tsugaru's local cuisine, the refined flavors and generous portions were truly satisfying. The variety of local sake was also impressive. Despite a Multiple Night Stay, I was surprised to find that the breakfast buffet offerings were completely different each morning. I accidentally left something behind and requested it to be sent cash on delivery, but they kindly shipped it prepaid instead. Their courteous response and thoughtful attention to detail were heartwarming. Thank you very much. I will definitely visit again in a different season!

    Felt the history.

    The building and the large public bath exuded a sense of history. The chef kindly prepared grilled char, a freshwater fish free of Anisakis, for my wife who has an Anisakis allergy. We deeply appreciate the chef's thoughtfulness.

    The best hidden retreat accommodation for relaxation.

    The historic Tsuta Onsen features a chloride spring bubbling up from the ground, perfect for relieving fatigue and warming the body. The room was beautifully renovated and very clean. Dinner was delightful, featuring delicious dishes made with Aomori ingredients, perfectly paired with sake. At night, we enjoyed watching fireflies, and the next day we took a relaxing walk to Tsutanuma Pond—truly a rejuvenating accommodation. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making us want to visit again.

    I would love to stay here again if possible.

    Currently, we regret to inform you that single occupancy stays are not accepted. Although the Room is old and small, its exquisite design is quite rare these days. It seems they are planning renovations to install air conditioning, which is a bit disappointing.
