    This was our fourth stay since our first visit last spring. We thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful dishes, featuring fresh, seasonal local ingredients with flavors that are hard to find elsewhere. With a limited number of rooms and fewer guests, we were able to relax and enjoy the spacious large bath and open-air bath. Additionally, this time we were deeply moved by the beautiful moon view from the open-air bath. Thank you so much!

    To celebrate the 70th birthday with friends

    The accommodation we chose for a 70th birthday celebration and as a memorable trip with friends from various places was "Asaba" in Shuzenji, a traditional ryokan I had always wanted to visit. It truly lived up to everyone's expectations as an established ryokan. From the warm welcome to the heartfelt farewell, despite being fully booked on the day of our stay, every detail was handled with thoughtful care. From before check-in, staff subtly responded to our needs. Starting with the meaningful words on the hanging scroll in our room's alcove, to the gentle warmth of bath towels at the open-air bath—every detail left us impressed. The beautifully presented dishes served in exquisite tableware were not only delicious but also refined in taste. The celebratory red rice and sake prepared for this special occasion added a delightful touch. Every staff member’s attention to detail made everything exceptional and satisfying. The spacious salon overlooking the garden provided a calm and comfortable space where we could relax at ease. Having made this reservation six months ago, I am reassured that it was absolutely the right choice. Thank you very much for your outstanding hospitality!

    It was excellent.

    The atmosphere and service at the accommodation were warm and welcoming, offering a sense of luxury while also feeling comforting. Each dish in the meal was carefully prepared, with excellent temperature control, which left a lasting impression. The hinoki bath attached to the room was delightful with its natural hot spring water flow. I personally loved the quality of the spring water—it made me want to soak for a long time—and the scent of hinoki was incredibly soothing. The open-air bath had a great sense of openness and felt amazing. The timing of snowfall added a magical touch, making it an unforgettable experience. I usually don't write reviews, but I wanted to express my gratitude to everyone at this accommodation through this message. Thank you for providing such a relaxing time for both body and mind. I look forward to visiting again!

    After over 10 years ...

    After over 10 years of anticipation, I was finally able to visit and was very excited. The warm welcome upon arrival was truly touching. The room offered a great view of the Noh stage, providing a wonderful scenery. Additionally, the dining experience at table seating was comfortable for my parents who are not fond of traditional floor seating. Every dish served was exceptional, and we savored each bite. I also appreciated the Sensai amenities provided. The outdoor bath offered a blissful moment in the morning as the weeping cherry blossoms were in full bloom. The entire accommodation was incredibly quiet, allowing us to enjoy a relaxing and luxurious time at our own pace. The thoughtful attention to detail throughout the property was remarkable. The Asaba Manju exceeded my expectations with its delicious taste and left me deeply impressed. This being my first stay here, it became an unforgettable memory that did not disappoint my expectations. I hope to revisit on dates when there is a Noh performance on stage!

    The food, bath, serv...

    The food, bath, service, and Room were all excellent. However, the futon was a bit tiring, so next time I would prefer a room with a bed. The staff were very kind and maintained just the right distance. After the meal, they asked about my favorite dish; instead of just saying "everything was delicious" as usual, I shared various impressions this time, which made it more memorable. Thank you very much!

    Overall, a slightly disappointing impression.

    This was my fourth visit after eight years. The renovated Ryokan has a chic and clean interior, which was impressive. However, perhaps due to a staff shortage, the pace of serving meals was extremely fast. Even though I requested a slower pace, it felt too late, and the meal time ended in no time. Recently, other Ryokans have improved their standards, so I didn’t feel the same special atmosphere as before. The variety and quality of amenities were surprisingly low. The outdoor bath was isolated and inconvenient to access. It didn’t feel worth 500,000 yen per night.

    About the Welcome at the Ryokan

    This trip was planned to relax with my husband, enjoy delicious food, and soak in the Onsen at the luxurious Ryokan Asaba. However, I was disappointed upon arrival as there was no one to greet us when we arrived by car. There wasn’t a single person around. As a result, we didn’t know where to park the car. My husband has difficulty walking, so I left him waiting in the car while I carried our luggage into the entrance. Embarrassingly, I had to call out loudly several times saying "Hello!" before anyone from the Ryokan came out. After some time, a woman appeared followed by several staff members, but it was quite unbelievable. It felt like our much-anticipated trip got off on the wrong foot right from arrival and left me very disappointed. Is this kind of reception for guests’ arrivals normal at Asaba? While it might be due to my lack of understanding about such procedures, considering how expensive it is here, I decided to share my experience through this post anyway.

    Perhaps the best existence of a Japanese Onsen Ryokan.

    From the moment of arrival to departure, we fully enjoyed the charm of a Japanese Onsen Ryokan, including the hot spring water, cuisine, Room, hospitality, garden (Noh theater), and scenery. This is likely the pinnacle of Onsen Ryokan experiences in Japan.

    I was satisfied with the consistently excellent food and service.

    This is my third stay. As always, I am very satisfied with the delicious dishes made with seasonal ingredients. The bath is excellent, and even after returning home, my skin remains smooth and in great condition for a while.

    To the dream Stays

    I was able to stay at the dream Stays I had wanted to visit for over 30 years. I was worried that my high expectations might lead to disappointment, but there was no such thing at all. From the welcome to the farewell, I was very impressed by the attentive service. There was no need to wear slippers to the Room, and I was enveloped by the fluffy carpet and the scent of tatami. The view from the Room was wonderful, and the temperature was set higher so it wouldn't be cold even with the windows fully open. Such thoughtful consideration is truly unique to "Asaba." While drinking coffee in the salon, I enjoyed the view of the garden, fed the koi in the pond, and was truly moved by the beauty of the garden. Considering the maintenance of this garden and the setup of the Property, I thought it was understandable that the accommodation fee was high. The softness of the bathwater and the fact that all the hot water from the faucet is Onsen is amazing. In the open-air bath, the towels were warmed by a heater, and the warm towels added to my happiness. The food was delicious, allowing me to enjoy seasonal ingredients, but the pumpkin shiruko was a bit too heavy, and I regrettably left most of it. The making of the futon was like an art technique, providing a very comfortable sleep. I would love to visit again in a different Room. Thank you for the wonderful time.

    A Stays You Should Stay At Least Once in Your Lifetime

    Room, cuisine, bath, service. Everything was wonderful. It felt as if time was flowing differently here. It was a wonderful moment where I could reflect on myself while feeling history and nature with my whole body. I would like to stay again. Thank you very much.

    I felt that most aspects were good, but there was one point where I realized that even if the Facility and environment are good, it is difficult to improve the soft aspects. The kimono and hair of the staff who brought the food had a strong smell of tobacco, which lingered in the Room even after they left. When going to places like sushi restaurants or traditional Japanese restaurants where the aroma is also enjoyed, I believe it is good manners for customers not to wear perfume. Similarly, I think it would be considerate to instruct the staff who serve food to refrain from smoking during work hours.

    Autumn Leaves of Asaba

    During the autumn foliage season, Shuzenji Asaba, a renowned luxury Ryokan in Japan, offered an experience where the beauty of autumn was condensed into a moment. The scenery created by the Noh stage "Gekkeiden" in the garden and the autumn leaves was exceptional. In the early morning, the reflection of Gekkeiden and the vibrant autumn leaves on the pond's surface was as serene and beautiful as a painting. This unique luxury Ryokan perfectly harmonized the fusion of traditional Japanese architecture and modern art, the open-air bath's sense of freedom, heartfelt hospitality, and exquisite seasonal autumn cuisine.
