A coveted three-Michelin-Key accommodation
I have stayed in Shuzenji at Yagyu-no-Sho and at Sora next door, but this was my first stay at Asaba. The moment I arrived and stepped into the entrance, a pond and a Noh stage opened up before me—an overwhelming view. I also noticed the pleasant scent of wood and the crisp, refined air. I assume everything is kept impeccably clean. Our Room was in the second-lowest price range, but it still had a view of the Noh stage, and with two adjoining rooms it felt very comfortable. Both the staff member who guided us to our Room and handled check-in, and the attendant who served dinner and breakfast, were courteous yet pleasantly friendly, which helped me relax. Some luxury top-tier Accommodations have staff who make guests feel tense, but that was not the case here. Dinner made it clear that each dish was prepared with great care. The soft-shelled turtle winter melon soup and the horse mackerel sashimi were outstanding. However, as others have mentioned, since the grilled dish was sweetfish and the rice was also sweetfish rice, I would have preferred a sea fish for the grilled course. I used the large public bath about twice without running into anyone, so I could unwind in peace. The in-room bath was also very comfortable. I spent time in the salon before dinner on day one and after breakfast on day two; it was wonderfully quiet there, so I could relax while looking out over the pond and Noh stage. I would like to stay again in a different season.

A calm atmosphere, beautiful moss in the garden, attentive yet unobtrusive service, and tatami throughout the corridors. Every dish was simply and stylishly presented, and the lightly seasoned flavors with rich dashi were outstanding. I was so relaxed enjoying the view from the open-air bath that an hour passed in no time at all. Asaba Ryokan is wonderful! This time I visited with a friend of 60 years, and she loved it so much that she wants to come back next time with her husband. Thank you for taking such good care of us.

The garden was amazing.
I was able to relax at a leisurely pace, unwind from everyday fatigue both physically and mentally, and feel refreshed.

I experienced a glimpse of the pinnacle.
Asaba, a place I had long admired. Having watched videos and the like, my expectations were very high. Even so, the hospitality exceeded anything I had imagined, and I became convinced that Asaba represents the pinnacle of Japanese hospitality. The staff were not only polite; every single person was clearly mindful of true “hospitality” and proper conduct, and it was consistently upheld throughout. The other guests staying there were also all very refined. Greetings were exchanged everywhere—throughout the property and even in the baths—and it was a valuable learning experience for me as well. Dining was equally meticulous, down to the choice of plates, serving temperatures, and pacing. The explanations of each dish were also pleasant to listen to. You truly preserve the traditions of Japanese cuisine; while I’m still young and not in a position to judge, I savored each course and enjoyed it immensely. It was such a wonderful time that it naturally made me feel humble. The Onsen is fed directly from the source as well. I felt refreshed both physically and mentally. Most striking of all is the Noh stage seen across the pond. The Nishikigoi swam beautifully, captivating me both day and night. At night in particular, lanterns are floated on the pond—it’s truly magical, like a dream—and I found myself gazing at it for ages. I definitely want to return someday. I believe this is an Accommodation where you will never feel disappointed—even when staying for a special occasion.

The primary target audience is said to be people with an annual income of ¥20–30 million.
When we asked the AI about the assumed guests’ annual income, it responded that our primary target is those earning JPY 20–30 million per year.

Thoughtful attention to every detail.
Outstanding hospitality and meals—nothing to criticize. It was an Accommodation I truly couldn’t fault for the first time in a while. I’d love to visit again on a sunny day.

From check-in to check-out, both my mind and body were truly refreshed. What surprised me most this time was the effectiveness of the Onsen. For the past year, I’ve had facial allergies and couldn’t wear makeup, but after returning home I noticed my skin condition had improved significantly. I believe Asaba’s Onsen even soothed my skin. I was so happy that I immediately made another Reservation for my next stay. I’m looking forward to visiting again.

The Facility, dining, and service—everything is among the very best in Japan.
I stayed in a second-floor Room facing the Noh theater. After the renovation, it has been transformed into an Accommodation with only 11 guest groups, making great use of the space and even more relaxing. The quality of the meals is excellent. In addition, all staff are highly professional. It ranks among my top three.

Great.
I was truly impressed. The view from the Room, feeding the koi, and coffee in the lounge— the meals as well—everything was the best of any Ryokan I’ve stayed at. It made me want to visit again.

This is an Accommodation you’ll want to return to again and again.
As always, I love Asaba—it was wonderful. There happened to be a taiko drum performance, and I enjoyed it to the fullest. The meals were just the right amount, with gentle seasoning that brings out the natural flavors of the ingredients—exactly my preference. I also truly appreciated being able to relax with a coffee in the salon, and spending time browsing the books in the library made me very happy. Just one point: for an Onsen Ryokan of this level, I felt the in-Room amenities could be a bit more complete. If you forget makeup remover or toner, having to go all the way to the bath area is slightly inconvenient. In winter especially, dryness is a concern, so I would be very happy if there were body lotion in the Room.

My dream has come true!
We stayed here to celebrate the 60th birthday of two senior friends, a long-postponed occasion due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. We had a Multiple Night Stay, but we couldn’t Reserve the same Room for consecutive nights, so we ended up in different Rooms on the first and second nights—and it turned out to be the perfect choice. From the Matsukaze Room, we could look down on the Noh stage from the second floor, and the view from the window was truly breathtaking. The taiko performance on the water at dusk was also magnificent and very enjoyable. Of course, every dish was beautifully presented. We loved details such as red-and-white plum-blossom plates for plum season and sake cups decorated with illustrations of Mt. Fuji—there was something delightful with each course. Even the foam on our draft beer was shaped like Mt. Fuji! As you would expect from a Michelin three-star experience, every dish was thoughtfully crafted, and we enjoyed it wholeheartedly. The woman in charge of our Room provided attentive yet natural hospitality, which our senior guests greatly appreciated (especially impressive given her young age—I felt I should learn from her). It became a truly wonderful memory. Thank you very much to all of your staff for taking such great care of us.

The views were spectacular, and the food was excellent.
I had the pleasure of staying one night at the long-admired Asaba Ryokan. I was moved by the view the moment I stepped inside—it was truly wonderful. When I returned from going out, they offered me a warm hand towel, a thoughtful touch I haven’t experienced elsewhere. Dinner and breakfast were both outstanding, with beautiful tableware and dishes that impressed me. However, there were a few disappointing points. First, when I was shown to my Room, as soon as the entrance door was opened, the explanation started with the toilet and bath... I think it would have been better to show me the main Room and let me enjoy the view first, then provide the detailed explanations. There was no smile at all; it felt like purely businesslike service. I don’t feel that this level of hospitality matches Asaba Ryokan’s top-class reputation. It was very disappointing... Another point: The drain area in the bathroom was dirty. Because it was blackened with grime, I lifted the drain cover and found severe hair buildup clogging it. It bothered me, so I cleaned three spots myself. I feel that after housekeeping finishes cleaning, there is not enough final checking by someone senior such as the proprietress or a manager. It was also disappointing that there was no greeting in my Room from the proprietress. Also, While I was in the lounge having coffee, staff in back-of-house roles began changing artwork even though guests were present, working quietly without a single word of apology or acknowledgment. That did not feel like something you would expect from a first-class Ryokan. Even just one brief word to guests using the space would have been appropriate... The food was delicious above all else, so I sincerely hope these points will be improved. Thank you very much for allowing me to spend such a lovely time.

I had a comfortable stay.
It was outstanding. The hospitality, the condition and upkeep of the Facility, and the meals were exceptional. I wasn’t feeling well, but you promptly prepared some medicine for me, which was a great help. Next time, I’ll make sure I’m in good shape so I can enjoy your delicious breakfast.

It was wonderful. Thank you very much.
I think this was a wonderful Accommodation, with excellent attention to detail in many ways. However, the neighboring Room was occupied by a large group of foreign guests, and it was very noisy until late at night, so I had trouble falling asleep. The next morning, a staff member asked, “Did you sleep well?” so I briefly mentioned it, but perhaps it wasn’t reported to the proprietress. Even at check-out, she made no comment and simply let it pass. I rated the meals 4/5 because they were thoroughly seafood- and Japanese cuisine-focused. Personally, I’m more of a meat lover and a coffee lover, so as a small indulgence, it would have been nice if there had been an optional meat dish and after-meal coffee.

A wonderful Accommodation with delicious Japanese cuisine
I visited in midwinter. I was truly impressed by the outstanding service from everyone, from the shoe attendant to the staff in charge of our Room. Their guidance was courteous, never overbearing, and always spot-on. There was a Japanese taiko drum performance that was incredibly powerful—I ended up stepping out onto the veranda and listening, completely captivated despite the cold. All meals were served in the Room, with an attendant bringing each dish one by one. While there weren’t many luxury ingredients, everything was proper Japanese cuisine and I was thoroughly satisfied. The snow crab takikomi rice was exceptional. The sashimi was also expertly prepared and delicious. Breakfast was just as enjoyable; the fluffy rolled omelet packed with dashi was unforgettable. The rice itself was excellent too—without any talk of where it came from or how it was cooked, it felt like pure confidence in quality. I took a walk to Shuzenji Onsen, and to my surprise my shoes had been warmed for me when I returned. It made me feel like Nobunaga. I will definitely be back.

It was a relaxing experience.
Thank you very much for your kind hospitality. The Onsen featured a seasonal "yuzu bath," and the meals offered seasonal delicacies such as crab, pufferfish, and grouper. Thanks to this experience, I was able to fully relax and rejuvenate. I will look forward to visiting again as motivation while dedicating myself to work!

Thank you for your continued support in April.
In April, during the spring season with some cherry blossoms still remaining, we stayed as a group of five for a 70th birthday celebration trip. This time, with a different group of three members coinciding with my birthday and inspired by a friend's wish to enjoy the autumn leaves at Asaba, we decided to stay again. Although the room was smaller than before for three people, we could see the Noh theater through slightly red autumn leaves just starting to change color, allowing us to fully experience a different season from spring. The meals were delicious and served at perfect timing. A kind staff member noticed from our conversation that it was my birthday and surprised me with celebratory red rice during breakfast. The morning open-air bath was very pleasant, and as always, thoughtful touches like pre-warmed towels were impressive. The manager's arrangements for transportation and all the staff's attentiveness made our stay comfortable. However, on our way back home this time, I felt something was missing compared to before... ...This time around, the proprietress was away on business during both our arrival and departure (which is understandable). But perhaps it’s her presence—the "flower" or essence she brings—that I deeply missed this visit.

This was my fifth stay.
I first stayed at Asaba last April and was very satisfied, so I have continued to use this accommodation. This stay marks my fifth visit. The delicious cuisine made with seasonal ingredients that preserve their natural flavors, the heartfelt hospitality of the staff, and the refreshing open-air and indoor baths impress me every time. Additionally, the same person has always been in charge of our room during our stays, understanding our preferences without us needing to say much, allowing us to relax comfortably each time. Thank you as always. I look forward to staying here again.

A cozy and meticulou...
A cozy and meticulously thoughtful accommodation, embodying the essence of a traditional Japanese ryokan. Upon check-in, yukata in the perfect size for each guest is provided. The fabric feels high-quality with just the right amount of starching. Bath towels in the open-air bath are pre-warmed, and chopstick sleeves are slightly moistened for ease of use. The waterfall stops flowing at night to ensure a peaceful sleep, and air conditioning operates silently without any noticeable presence. All shades are automated, and NHK subscription fees are covered (having full access to BS channels is quite rare!). The room's downlights create a subtle ambiance, and the futon arrangement is impeccably beautiful. Despite concerns about staff shortages these days, experienced employees were well-prepared during dinner service even though they seemed busy. If I had to point out minor drawbacks: breakfast rice was slightly soggy; towel racks were inconvenient; and the TV was not made in Japan. Additionally, while I expected a serene retreat for adults, there were surprisingly many young guests creating an energetic atmosphere that differed from my expectations. With longer-than-usual stay durations compared to typical ryokans, I enjoyed leisurely moments watching Noh stages or gazing at koi fish and river fish from my room.

When staying in a high-grade room
"Thank you for providing such a wonderful stay. The Noh stage at Asaba and the view from the room were truly exceptional, and I was deeply impressed by the meticulous hospitality. The meals were also fantastic, allowing us to fully enjoy the seasonal flavors. One small suggestion, though it may be a luxurious request: considering the high-class nature of this accommodation, I found it slightly surprising that beverages were charged separately and that items like spiny lobster or abalone required additional orders. Guests paying such rates likely seek the ultimate experience. Including drink charges or premium ingredients in the course could make for an even more flawless accommodation experience. I was extremely satisfied with this stay and look forward to visiting again."

Maybe I expected too much?
Entering through the entrance, the Noh stage and the beautiful garden, along with the friendly staff, truly lived up to Asaba's reputation. However, perhaps due to high expectations, there were some disappointments. The timing of meal service was excellent. For dinner, having two Ayu fish with Ayu rice might have been a bit too much. Additionally, the dried horse mackerel for breakfast was dry and lacked fat, which was unfortunate. Although I understand it may be due to staying in a lower-ranked Room, I would appreciate it if at least lotion could be provided in the Room. Not bringing my own essentials and having to go all the way to the public bath for them was disappointing. Other than that, I had a wonderful time overall. Thank you very much!

Disappointed with the dinner menu.
The tempura corn fritters and other dishes were disappointing for a dinner at a high-end Japanese-style Ryokan. Breakfast was delicious. However, the overall impression of the service did not match the Accommodation Fee.

The dream accommodation was a paradise.
Born over 500 years ago as a temple lodging, this accommodation offers scenery and atmosphere unlike any ordinary stay. It is a quiet and serene retreat for adults. Located about two hours from central Tokyo, it provides a space where you can forget all the hustle of daily life. The cuisine is perfectly balanced and truly exceptional.

One of Japan's renowned accommodations
Staying at Asaba felt like experiencing an extraordinary space where the ordinary meets the extraordinary—a nostalgic and calming atmosphere, not defined by luxurious facilities or perfect manuals. This feeling was something I had also experienced unexpectedly at renowned Kyoto ryokans like Tawaraya and Hiiragiya. If there is a difference, I believe it lies in the soothing sound of water, the beautiful garden, and the Noh stage. The meals were all delicious and suited my taste perfectly. Of course, how one feels about an accommodation may vary depending on their age, life experiences, and cultural background. However, we left with genuine joy in our hearts. It was not an inexpensive accommodation by any means but was undoubtedly worth every penny—a truly wonderful stay.

A stay where you can enjoy a quiet and peaceful time.
We apologize for the delay in posting as we just returned to California yesterday. We stayed at your accommodation shortly after arriving in Japan, both to quietly recover from jet lag and to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Although it was only a one-night stay, we were able to enjoy the passing time surrounded by fresh greenery, the chirping of birds, the sound of water flowing through the garden's stream, and a serene atmosphere wherever we went. The beautiful meals served in our room allowed us to relax and savor them without any concern for others. The outdoor bath was thoughtfully prepared with warm soft towels, and naturally blooming flowers were casually arranged—every detail reflected your considerate hospitality, providing a sense of quiet comfort. Thank you for such a peaceful and beautiful stay; it has become an unforgettable memory of our time in Japan.

Timeless and Ever-Changing
For 12 years since my first visit, I have returned almost every year and am always amazed by the changes I notice each time. The accommodation has adapted flexibly to evolving lifestyles, preferences over the years, and the increasing number of international guests, ensuring a more comfortable stay. At the same time, the essence remains unchanged—enjoying a soak in excellent hot springs, savoring delicious meals crafted by skilled chefs, and indulging in quiet luxury. This is even reflected in details like spotless window glass throughout the property. Additionally, they remembered my birthday without me mentioning it and celebrated my 60th with a red hat and vest—a thoughtful gesture that made this visit special. While there are moments where staff shortages seem apparent these days, it’s understandable given current circumstances. Although prices have risen significantly over time, this remains an accommodation I wish to visit at least once a year. However, it’s unfortunate that I no longer see the proprietress around within the property recently.
