    First visit to Yamag...

    First visit to Yamagata during cherry season. Decided to stay at Zao Onsen to see the famous Okama Crater. Convenient location: about 40 minutes to Okama and 15 minutes to a large roadside station at the base of the mountain. Stayed in a renovated room, which was very clean and comfortable. The living space had a sofa set as well as a dining table, making it convenient for tea or organizing luggage. The sofa bed was compact with a narrow width, but the bedroom beds were spacious and comfortable. Opted for an 11 AM checkout plan, so I even took another nap after breakfast! This large hotel consists of three wings: Central, East, and South. My room was on the third floor of the East Wing this time. Although it’s quite far from the main bathhouse in the Central Wing, dining facilities are located in the East Wing for easy access. Meals were beautifully presented with summer themes and tasted great—especially loved how tender and delicious Yonezawa beef shabu-shabu was! The main bathhouse is open 24 hours except during cleaning or gender switch times—a great feature! There’s also an open-air bath with milky white water that truly feels like an authentic onsen experience! Visited around 11 PM when no one else was there; having it all to myself made for ultimate relaxation. All staff members were friendly and welcoming, making my stay very pleasant.     The flowing sulfur Onsen was wonderful.

    The service at the dining area was excellent. Additionally, the Shuttle Service to various locations was provided willingly, making for a pleasant stay. The flowing sulfur hot spring was also wonderful. Thank you very much.

    Thank you for upgrad...

    Thank you for upgrading our room. It was very clean and convenient as it has been recently renovated. The large public bath, which we were looking forward to, met our expectations, and we enjoyed it multiple times. Even after returning home, the scent of sulfur lingered. This is a wonderful accommodation that combines the simplicity and smartness of a hotel with the hospitality of a ryokan.

    We enjoyed it even in the rain.

    Unfortunately, it was pouring rain, so we couldn't go sightseeing and decided to check into the Hotel early. The Room was spacious and had a relaxing atmosphere. Most of all, the natural flowing Onsen was amazing and enjoyable. There were juices, coffee, and some snacks available, allowing us to relax in the lounge after multiple visits to the Onsen. We even took a nap before heading back to enjoy the Onsen again. It was truly a wonderful experience. The meals were also delicious!

    It was a wonderful stay.

    This was my first time staying here. Since it was a less busy period, my room was upgraded, allowing me to relax and enjoy my stay. Thank you very much. The Onsen had excellent water quality, which helped ease my body aches. The indoor bath made of wood with its slightly dim atmosphere was also very pleasant. Dinner was served in a private room, and I enjoyed a full meal. The dishes creatively used Yamagata ingredients in an elegant way, and everything tasted amazing. Breakfast was a buffet served in a bright venue with large windows where I enjoyed the meal while admiring the beautiful cherry blossoms outside the window. From check-in to check-out, I spent my time in a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. I would love to stay here again someday! My heartfelt thanks go out to all the staff for their kind hospitality as well—thank you so much! Also, meeting a serow at the parking lot upon arrival became an unforgettable memory!

    A very comfortable H...

    A very comfortable Hotel with excellent staff, Facility, and bath. The meals were particularly satisfying with just the right portions and delicious until the last bite. The smaller course option was much appreciated. Both dinner and breakfast were accompanied by outstanding hospitality from the staff. I hope to visit again during the ski season.

    I stayed here during my first trip to Yamagata. The hotel staff were very friendly, and the meals were delicious. My room was upgraded, allowing me to have a very comfortable stay. The onsen was excellent, and I was extremely satisfied.

    Fulfilling

    It was a Hotel I always wanted to visit, and I’m glad I could go. I was able to relax and unwind from daily fatigue in the spacious Room. The "welcome" signs placed throughout added a nice touch, and the staff were professional and courteous, which made me feel grateful. The food featured local ingredients, and luckily there weren’t many people around, so I could enjoy the bath comfortably with clean and pleasant hot water—absolutely perfect! I would love to visit again if I have the chance.

    Dreamy Sulfur Onsen with Snow View Bath

    We visited for the first time to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Our room was upgraded, and we received a congratulatory message, which made us very happy. The dining area was partitioned like a private room, allowing us to enjoy our meal comfortably. The staff were friendly and made it a wonderful anniversary for us. The sulfur Onsen bath we had been looking forward to was absolutely amazing. Breakfast was a buffet with a wide variety of options that exceeded our expectations. At the breakfast venue, there was an incredibly energetic older male staff member whose excellent service gave us so much energy. We would love to visit again next year! Thank you very much!

    Zao Ski Resort and Zao International Hotel were great! However...

    The room was spacious and clean, and although we couldn't finish all the dishes, the Yamagata beef was delicious. It was much better than a Ryokan in Togatta Onsen, Miyagi Zao, which cost more than twice as much when we visited in January. The shuttle service from Yamagata Station that arrives at the Hotel by noon is very convenient for skiers who want to start skiing on the afternoon of their arrival day. Having fruits and sweets prepared daily in the room's refrigerator is a nice touch, but since there are snacks and ice cream available in the lobby, it would be great if bottled water could also be provided. Zao Ski Resort was fantastic with challenging courses to enjoy. We heard that most of the snow monsters collapsed on the day we left, but during our stay, we were blessed with good weather—no wind—and they looked stunning against the blue sky. The gentleman at the Hotel's ski rental shop was very kind; he carefully waxed our skis and had enjoyable conversations with us. Thank you so much! The bath had a traditional Zao Onsen atmosphere, and soaking in an open-air bath while watching snow fall was absolutely amazing—it made us want to go back multiple times! However, there were more Chinese guests than expected; one morning at the open-air bath, I noticed someone bathing with their towel submerged in water. When I pointed it out politely, they mentioned they didn’t know it wasn’t allowed because others had been doing something similar last night by draping towels over their shoulders while bathing. There’s only one small signboard near each gender-separated large public bath explaining proper etiquette for using Onsen baths—but it's too small for anyone to notice or read properly. Given how many international guests stay here now: - The staff should explain proper Onsen usage verbally during check-in. - A smaller version of this guide should also be placed inside every room. - Larger signs should be installed both outside & inside public baths. Cleanliness must always remain top priority—so please take sufficient measures regarding this matter moving forward! I understand fully why inbound tourism has become essential due to fewer Japanese skiers these days... However: If inbound visitors dominate so overwhelmingly (to where you barely hear any Japanese spoken), some Japanese guests might feel discouraged about returning—even if they'd love another trip next year skiing at Zao Ski Resort again. While prioritizing international visitors’ needs makes sense economically—it’s equally important ensuring domestic travelers can still enjoy comfortable stays too! Hoping improvements will come soon!

    Stayed for a birthday celebration.

    I have stayed at several Onsen accommodations in this price range (60,000 yen per night) through IKYU.com, but I noticed a few concerns: ① Check-out time at 10 AM feels too early. Most accommodations in this price range offer check-out at 11 AM or 12 PM. ② The room heating was insufficient and did not warm up properly. ③ Limited flexibility with timing. Breakfast is only available from 7 AM to 9 AM, closing strictly at 9 AM, leaving just a two-hour window. Dinner also closes at 9 PM. When we were unexpectedly delayed due to a long queue after the illuminated snow scene event and called to inform about our late return, we were told that dinner would not be served if we didn’t finish by the strict closing time of 9 PM despite having already paid for it. We rushed back as fast as possible and managed to arrive by 8:20 PM, but the strict closing time made it difficult to enjoy the delicious dinner leisurely and comfortably. It was disappointing for such a long trip from afar. These are my concerns during my multiple night stay here.

    An outdated and overpriced Room, I even wondered if I had booked the wrong one. Disappointed that even IKYU.com introduces such a Hotel. However, as expected of Zao, the Onsen was excellent. Next time, I'll just visit the public bath for the Onsen.

    The Onsen facility is excellent. The location is great as you can go directly to the ski resort. Since we have a large family, we always end up using Japanese-style rooms, but their pricing is equivalent to or higher than the renovated rooms with beds for 1 to 3 people. Improving the futon mattresses in the Japanese-style rooms would make them more comfortable and enhance overall satisfaction.

    Very satisfied.

    First visit to Zao with my child, aiming to see the frost-covered trees. The room was spacious and clean, with a fantastic view of the slopes from the window. (Not only tea snacks but also adorable welcome sweets in the fridge!) The onsen was very clean, and above all, the water quality was excellent! After just one soak, my skin became smooth and radiant! I've never experienced such immediate effects before. Since it is strongly acidic, there might be a slight tingling sensation on your skin. Additionally, there is a sulfur smell that some people might find unpleasant; however, I highly recommend experiencing it for yourself. Dinner was served in a private room while breakfast was buffet-style. For dinner, we enjoyed Yamagata beef shabu-shabu as the main dish. Breakfast included dishes made with Yamagata specialties such as stewed Yamagata beef curry, rice dumpling pork shumai (Kome no Musume Buta), and Tsuyahime rice—everything was delicious and enjoyable! In the lobby area, complimentary coffee and juice were available along with ice pops—a delightful touch! Although day-use bathing is offered for non-staying guests too, staying guests could enjoy free access even after check-out by simply paying for towel rental fees. This allowed us to warm up our chilled bodies after viewing frost-covered trees—much appreciated! From accommodations to rooms to onsen facilities to meals—and not forgetting staff hospitality—all aspects exceeded expectations entirely! Being peak season meant prices were accordingly higher; nonetheless worth every penny—I would love another stay here someday soon! Thank you so much!

    Skiing in Zao

    This accommodation was primarily used for skiing. The room interior is typical of an Onsen accommodation, but it was well-cleaned and had a sense of cleanliness. Complimentary drinks and chocolates were available in the lobby, which was a nice touch for a quick break. However, the selection at the souvenir shop was not very impressive. The Onsen's water quality and design were excellent, especially the wooden bathhouse, which had great ambiance and provided a highly satisfying experience. The tags to prevent slipper mix-ups were also appreciated. It takes about 2-3 minutes to walk from the ski room to the slopes while carrying skis. Although it's not directly connected to the slopes as expected, it’s still within an acceptable range. Renting equipment at the hotel was very affordable and cost-effective, though some models seemed slightly outdated. The food was delicious but served in large portions that I couldn’t finish. It would be great if there were options like courses with just main dishes for those who prefer smaller meals.

    The meal was very delicious.

    We predicted when the snow would start falling and stayed for two nights with my wife. The meals, especially the Yamagata beef, were very delicious and had a melt-in-your-mouth taste. Also, as shown in the photos, the sake tasting offers a variety of flavors to enjoy. (You can choose between Daiginjo and Junmai sake.) We bought a souvenir called Koten (read as Koten) at Zao Shiki no Hotel. We stayed for two nights, and although we thought the dinner and breakfast menus would be the same for both days, we were amazed that they changed the menu. Additionally, we could enjoy various baths at both Zao Shiki no Hotel and Omiya Ryokan. Moreover, the shuttle service bus was provided, which was very helpful. I apologize for the inconvenience caused to the hotel staff as I forgot my lotion and they contacted me. If I have another opportunity to visit Yamagata, I would definitely like to stay again. Thank you.

    Unexpected Event

    I am a troubled guest. The cost performance did not match the high price! The food I was expecting was a luxurious beef dish that I had to grill or boil myself, and there was no particularly delicious dish. The good impression from the website often differs from reality, and I want to use this experience for future property choices, as reviews tend to be highly rated. It was a property where I encountered an unprecedented event. In the large public bath, someone who seemed to have dementia took my underwear by mistake, and then took the room key I had placed in the dressing basket, entered my room, and took my belongings. 1. A hotel is not an extension of your home. I thought a hotel was a safe and secure place, but I was made aware that it is not necessarily so. I never imagined that someone would take my underwear and room key from the dressing room and not even realize they had entered someone else's room. There was no apology from the person. To put it nicely, they didn't even recognize that they had inconvenienced others. It was an opportunity to realize the need for self-defense. 2. About the hotel's response (1) Did you properly inform the family or companions of the person who made the mistake? While I understand the hotel's consideration not to make the companions of the person who made the mistake feel uncomfortable, it happened within the hotel, and there is a person who was inconvenienced. Since the person who took the wrong underwear and entered someone else's room might do the same thing again, I think it is necessary to properly inform the companions of the situation. There was no explanation about whether they informed the companions or received an apology from them. (2) Is this kind of phrasing acceptable? The hotel offered to prepare another room because it would feel unpleasant to have someone else enter my room. I appreciate the gesture. However, the only available room was next to the person who took my underwear, and I didn't feel comfortable facing them, so I declined. Then, the hotel said they couldn't respond to any further requests. I felt very uncomfortable with the phrasing, as I hadn't made any demands for a room change or anything else from the hotel, yet they said they couldn't meet any further demands.

    Enjoy the autumn leaves and Onsen

    We watched the sunset from the observatory at the summit station of the Zao Central Ropeway, browsed the souvenir shops on the way down, and checked into the Hotel after dark. Even in the dark, the large public bath had a very pleasant atmosphere. And when I woke up in the morning and opened the curtains, I was amazed. The beautiful mountains and trees spread out across the window, creating a breathtaking view. Since our Room was on the 6th floor, we enjoyed watching the gondolas of the ski resort move at eye level. In the daylight, the large public bath became a healing space surrounded by greenery and autumn leaves, just like a forest bath. For dinner, the Yamagata beef fillet steak cooked on a ceramic plate was delicious! The very tender lean meat was impressive. The carpaccio-style sashimi was also tasty. The staff's speech was soft and charming, which was pleasant. Is this a characteristic of people from Yamagata? It was my first trip to Yamagata, but I would like to visit Yamagata again.

    Autumn Leaves of Zao Onsen

    After hiking in the mountains, I was able to relax and rejuvenate in the Onsen. I was very pleased to find welcome sweets prepared in the Room's refrigerator upon arrival. The breakfast buffet was also delicious with a wide variety of menu options. I enjoyed Zao to the fullest by using the Onsen pass to enter affiliated Onsens.

    Completely satisfied with the Onsen!!

    Since there was no Onsen in the private room, I tried using the private bath. The interior had a calm atmosphere with the use of wood, and while the Onsen itself was good, I really liked the bathroom. The large public bath is the historic Hachiuemon, and the quality of the spring was simply amazing, with the wooden bath's atmosphere being very pleasant. The Yonezawa beef for the meal was of very high quality and delicious, both in the ceramic plate grill and the sukiyaki.
