    Classico

We stayed in midsummer as a couple with our two daughters in their 20s. The view from the Room was wonderful, and the Hotel Facility felt reliable and well maintained. The meals were exceptionally delicious. Zao Onsen itself is an old ski resort, but the classic atmosphere made for a pleasant experience.

It was a very nice accommodation.

The Room, meals, and staff were all wonderful, and I was able to relax. The Onsen is strongly acidic, and I felt re-energized.

Thank you for a wonderful time.

My first time at Zao Onsen. I love sulfur springs, and I thoroughly enjoyed both the indoor bath and the open-air bath. It was lightly raining, but they had a hat-like cover (like what Jizo statues wear) available so my head wouldn’t get wet. Thanks to that, I was able to relax in the open-air bath as well.\nThe meals were also excellent—Yamagata beef and all the other dishes were delicious. The rice was Tsuyahime, making for a high-quality dinner with local ingredients.\nThanks to the staff’s warm smiles and attentive service, I had a wonderful time.

    Milky Sulfur Hot Spring

A must for Onsen lovers: a milky-white, sulfur-rich natural hot spring with free-flowing source water. I was truly impressed by how wonderful Zao Onsen is. I stayed three nights in Yamagata, and this was the best place. I planned my trip to match cherry season, and the fresh greenery was dazzling—it became an unforgettable journey. I will visit again. Thank you for your hospitality. One note: conversations in the office behind the front desk could be heard outside more than expected. Ho ho ho.

    This was my first st...

This was my first stay here. Thank you for accommodating us in a wonderful Room. The dinner was also very delicious. The bath had a great atmosphere as well. There were a fair number of guests at this Hotel, but the Zao Onsen town felt quiet and deserted. Maybe because it was the off-season? Or because it was a weekday?

The bath is excellent, and the food and Room are also good, but...

There is no beer in the vending machines, and while you can find it at the shop, it is expensive. We strongly recommend buying it in town in Yamagata in advance.

    The Onsen is amazing.

I saw this Hotel on TV and stayed here this time. The Onsen water was very good for my dermatitis, and the mineral deposits were excellent. The Hotel is old, but the meals were delicious, the view from the Room was great, and the Hotel staff were kind. The massage in particular was outstanding. I would like to see the winter snow monsters as well. If possible, I would like towels to be available in the bath area too.

    Clean, spacious, and well-maintained.

Five of us—three generations of our family—stayed here. The Facility was spotless throughout and very comfortable, and it was an impressive Accommodation. The staff were kind and helpful as well. Breakfast offered a wide variety of dishes and was delicious, making our trip truly enjoyable. One minor drawback is the location at the top of a hill, which makes it a bit difficult to enjoy activities outside the Accommodation. For that reason, we would have liked to see a few more touches to help guests spend an elegant, relaxing time on-site. While there are quality chairs here and there, the reading area—something every good Hotel has—felt somewhat lacking. We thought that having more books about Zao, alpine plants, skiing, kokeshi dolls, and other local topics could offer guests an even richer experience of the area.

    The mountain Onsen was wonderful.

This area is popular with skiers in winter, but spring was just as wonderful, with fresh greenery and a secluded mountain open-air Onsen that felt like a hidden hot spring. The relaxing scenery made me want to linger forever, and the nostalgic design of the Onsen building made it a truly memorable experience. The Tsuyahime rice and local dishes were also delicious.

    Everything was wonderful.

Because we stayed in a Special Room, the view, spaciousness, and cleanliness were all perfect. As for the meals, the presentation and portion size initially felt fairly standard, but once we started eating, we could truly sense the depth behind each dish—from the appetizers onward—and how much care and thought had gone into every single item. The flavor exceeded our expectations. Regarding the large public bath: since it is a strongly acidic sulfur Onsen, there was indeed a strong sulfur smell throughout. However, the bath water at “Oomiya Ryokan,” a group Ryokan with Shuttle Service included, felt even better. When I asked about it, I was told that the source spring is actually here and that hot water is supplied to Zao Kokusai Hotel via piping. For that reason, I would recommend experiencing bathing at Oomiya Ryokan during your stay—or even after check-out by leaving your luggage here. (However, please note that Oomiya Ryokan is a small three-story property with no elevator, so I do not recommend staying overnight there.) As for Zao Onsen overall, I was impressed by how abundant the flow from the source springs is—more than expected—and felt that both its strong acidity (similar to Manza Onsen in Gunma Prefecture) and its intense sulfur aroma and milky-white appearance are quite alike. Lastly, all of the staff at Zao Kokusai Hotel provided excellent service. I would like to visit again in a different season. P.S.: The open-air bath is free-flowing from the source spring (kakenagashi), but I did wish the water temperature could be set a bit higher.

An Accommodation filled with the blessings of Zao and the heartfelt hospitality of Yamagata

A wonderful location with views of Zao. The creative, thoughtfully prepared meals were outstanding, and the sulfur Onsen—though known as one of Japan’s strongest acidic springs—was surprisingly comfortable, gently soothing as you soak. The natural atmosphere throughout the Onsen, along with the surrounding nature and starry sky seen through the windows, made it truly special. I believe this is one of Japan’s finest hot springs. The water was slightly on the hotter side, and I was able to enjoy the open-air bath for a long time. Above all, what I came to Yamagata seeking was the warmth and kindness of its people that I had experienced before—and this time it exceeded my expectations. The hospitality felt completely natural, never like a routine service task, and their genuine care was truly comforting. It was the most relaxed I have ever felt at an Onsen Accommodation. There may be many other Accommodations that feel luxurious simply because money has been spent on buildings or meals, but I felt Zao Kokusai Hotel is a rare and wonderful place where you can still sense what matters most in Japanese hospitality: the sincere kindness and warmth of the people who work there. Despite being a large and spacious Accommodation, their attentiveness in every detail throughout the Facility was exceptional in so many ways.

    Spacious and comfortable

My spouse and I stayed in the South Wing for three nights and went skiing for two days. The building feels spacious throughout, and the Room was large and relaxing. Access to the ski drying room was convenient, and we loved being able to step out to the slopes right away. The Onsen is a sulfur spring, but the smell was not particularly noticeable, and the open-air bath was very pleasant. Dinner featured thoughtfully prepared dishes and tasted fine, but the portions were too large for an elderly couple like us. The breakfast buffet offered a wide variety of options and was very satisfying. The staff greeted us properly, and their friendly service was appreciated. Overall, it was a comfortable and relaxing four-day stay.

    Highly recommended.

I had a very relaxing day in Zao. The hotel was comfortable, and the public bath was especially soothing and well maintained. There is also a footbath you can enjoy. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious with a wide variety of options, and it was quick to get to the ropeway the next day. I would definitely stay here again on my next visit.

    An amazing accommodation beyond words

I love Onsen and visit Onsen accommodations across the whole country almost every month, but this accommodation feels exceptionally comfortable and special. The Onsen is very calming, with sulfuric water that makes your skin smooth and gives you a rejuvenated feeling. The meals are made with local ingredients, offering both excellent presentation and taste! Personally, I loved the Yonezawa beef grilled on a ceramic plate. The room was upgraded by the kind courtesy of the accommodation, providing a very spacious space with a sofa and massage chair. It was incredibly quiet and relaxing. Time passed slowly here, and I had a great night's sleep in the large bed. I deeply appreciate the thoughtfulness and hospitality of all the staff members, and I look forward to visiting again.

    The Onsen was very relaxing.

The staff were all very kind and promptly provided Shuttle Service to nearby areas, which was great. The Room was very clean, and the large public bath with wooden flooring felt wonderful. The Onsen was also excellent.

    Highly Rated Hotel

I stayed with a friend. The spacious room, the satisfying onsen, and the delicious meals were all wonderful. Although it is a bit far from the station, the shuttle service was very helpful. I would love to visit again in a different season.

I would like to stay again!

I stayed for one night on October 31. I had stayed at this accommodation once before, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, I was disappointed by the low level of hospitality and some unhelpful staff, but I revisited because the onsen was excellent. This time, the staff's hospitality was outstanding and very impressive. In particular, the female staff member who guided me to my room initially, the male staff member who kindly took a photo for me with my phone as I left the dinner venue, and the senior male staff member at the breakfast venue were all truly wonderful. Their service made me want to visit again in the future. The only disappointment was that despite it being autumn foliage season, there were no autumn leaves visible from my room; instead, all I could see was another hotel building.

    It was excellent!

Stayed on October 25th. The cuisine was exceptional. Starting with delicate appetizers like autumn eggplant and duck breast pie, sweet potato and chestnut cheese terrine, followed by the hearty Yonezawa beef grilled on a ceramic plate and Tsuyahime rice, everything was absolutely delicious. The view from the room showcased stunning autumn foliage, and the open-air bath provided a relaxing experience to recover from fatigue. The staff's cheerful smiles added to the perfection of this accommodation. I would love to stay here again when revisiting Yamagata.

    Onsen is the best!

The room was spacious and comfortable. The Onsen was excellent in both quality and atmosphere. Regarding the meals, they were satisfying enough for this price range. This was a return visit, and I would love to stay at this Hotel again.

    An Outstanding Accommodation Beyond Perfection

We stayed as a family of five in two rooms. From the moment we entered, we were impressed by the clean and calming interior design, and the rooms were even more wonderful. We were also upgraded to a higher grade room. The delicious sweets in the refrigerator instantly took away our travel fatigue. The entire Hotel was very sophisticated, modern, and well-maintained. The Onsen was fantastic with both its design and water quality. The outdoor baths had two temperature options, which was perfect for me and my daughters who prefer milder temperatures. We enjoyed soaking in the gentle Onsen twice at night and once in the morning, leaving our skin smooth thanks to its silky waters. After bathing, we appreciated being able to relax with complimentary cold drinks and snacks—a thoughtful touch. Dinner featured local specialties such as appetizers, seasonal dishes, and grilled items on ceramic plates. Everything was creatively prepared with ample portions that were absolutely delicious. Even my husband and son felt completely satisfied. The Hotel staff were exceptionally kind, attentive, and professional; they handled all our requests sincerely. This is a Hotel I would confidently recommend to anyone—it’s sure to delight! I hope to visit again someday.

    The smiles were wonderful.

The autumn leaves have just started to change in Yamagata Zao. We visited the newly renovated International Hotel. Our Room was upgraded, and it was incredibly spacious and beautiful. A large living area with a lovely bedroom—absolutely stunning! We were delighted to receive welcome sweets as well. The bath, including the open-air one, was wonderful, and we also enjoyed a private bath. The spacious hinoki wood bath was exceptional! Dinner was served in a private room where we could each choose our own Yonezawa beef dish. We opted for sukiyaki and shabu-shabu. From appetizers to the main course, everything was delicious and beautifully presented. The Yonezawa beef was incredibly tender and flavorful—simply outstanding! Too full for dessert at dinner, we brought it back to our Room along with the welcome sweets—a luxurious treat that we savored slowly in our Room while marveling at how delicious everything tasted. The open-air bath in the public bathing area was slightly hot but had an amazing atmosphere. Slept soundly on the spacious bed. Breakfast was a buffet—I’m not usually fond of buffets, but every dish here tasted great, including local specialties that I thoroughly enjoyed. Above all else, what stood out most were the incredible staff members who greeted us warmly with smiles throughout our stay—it truly healed my heart. This is definitely a Hotel I want to stay at again! On the next day, we also visited Omiya-san (a sister Hotel) for their baths during daytime hours—it made for an absolutely fulfilling experience. Thank you so much; I will definitely return again!

    The open-air bath is exceptional.

This is an accommodation we have visited multiple times during this season. While it is not new, the interior is clean, and the meals are delicious. The open-air bath is especially fantastic! However, the room facilities were disappointing this time. The drainage in the corner where the tea and kettle are placed was clogged, and the accumulated water did not drain easily. The right side of the double sink provided hot water but no cold water at all. Since we stayed as a group of four, having one sink unusable was very inconvenient. Is this something that could be overlooked during room cleaning? Please ensure thorough facility inspections.

    It was excellent.

We used the facility for a university reunion of five people, also celebrating a 77th birthday. The staff's service was natural and very pleasant. The meals were absolutely exceptional. Of course, the baths were wonderful, and we enjoyed the switched baths the next morning as well. Thank you very much!

    Highly Satisfied

Visited with elderly parents. If you make a reservation in advance, there is a shuttle service from Yamagata Station, and the 40-minute ride enjoying the Zao scenery goes by quickly before arriving at the hotel. In the morning before check-in, we left our luggage and leisurely explored around the accommodation or took a ropeway ride. Since the hotel is located on a hill, going up and down was challenging for us without a car. The room in the South Wing had a direct view of the ropeway. Additionally, as it was a corner room, we could see Zao's beautiful mountain range from the right-side window, which deeply impressed my parents. The room was clean and well-maintained. Before dinner, we relaxed in our room after enjoying an onsen bath. The onsen felt slightly dimly lit but had excellent water quality; its milky sulfur spring soaked into our bodies wonderfully. Next to the lobby were drinks available for guests to enjoy after bathing—my mother and I had lemon water during this time-limited service—a delightful touch! Zao's water is delicious; even drinking it in our room felt refreshing. The meal plan offered smaller portions but was more than sufficient for us. Every dish was flavorful with gentle tastes that highlighted natural ingredients' essence—the broth used stood out as exceptional; it made one of my most memorable soups ever! All dishes were truly delicious. The staff provided outstanding hospitality with attentive care that reflected excellent training standards. Highly recommended accommodation!

    We stayed in a Weste...

We stayed in a Western-style room in the South Wing as a family of three. Although it was a Western-style room, the floor was tatami, allowing us to relax and feel at ease. The room was very clean and included welcome sweets, which were delicious. The kaiseki dinner was plentiful and delicious, with the Yonezawa beef grilled on a ceramic plate being particularly exceptional. The Onsen is available 24 hours, and both the indoor and outdoor baths were fantastic. Additionally, the staff at the Hotel were polite and attentive, leaving a positive impression. Thanks to this experience, we felt completely refreshed both physically and mentally. We would love to stay here again!

    I chose this accommo...

I chose this accommodation in Tohoku after much consideration due to its excellent reviews. Since I was traveling with my mother who uses a wheelchair, I called to confirm both at the time of reservation and the day before our visit. However, upon arrival at the hotel, we had to start by inflating the wheelchair tires, which left me feeling a bit disappointed. We reserved two rooms; one room's kettle already had water in it and was ready for use, but the other room's kettle was empty. It would be nice if there were more consistency in service. The bath was very satisfying; however, due to the nature of the hot spring water making floors slippery, having anti-slip mats would enhance safety. Both dinner and breakfast were very delicious and satisfying.

    First visit to Yamag...

First visit to Yamagata during cherry season. Decided to stay at Zao Onsen to see the famous Okama Crater. Convenient location: about 40 minutes to Okama and 15 minutes to a large roadside station at the base of the mountain. Stayed in a renovated room, which was very clean and comfortable. The living space had a sofa set as well as a dining table, making it convenient for tea or organizing luggage. The sofa bed was compact with a narrow width, but the bedroom beds were spacious and comfortable. Opted for an 11 AM checkout plan, so I even took another nap after breakfast! This large hotel consists of three wings: Central, East, and South. My room was on the third floor of the East Wing this time. Although it’s quite far from the main bathhouse in the Central Wing, dining facilities are located in the East Wing for easy access. Meals were beautifully presented with summer themes and tasted great—especially loved how tender and delicious Yonezawa beef shabu-shabu was! The main bathhouse is open 24 hours except during cleaning or gender switch times—a great feature! There’s also an open-air bath with milky white water that truly feels like an authentic onsen experience! Visited around 11 PM when no one else was there; having it all to myself made for ultimate relaxation. All staff members were friendly and welcoming, making my stay very pleasant. Thank you very much!
