One of a Kind: Bansuirou Fukuju

Staying at the dreamlike Accommodation “Bansuirou Fukuzumi”—and on top of that, being able to make a Reservation for “Room 15”—felt unreal. I honestly thought, “No way… really?” After waiting for months, the day finally arrived, and from the moment I stepped into the front desk area, everything was already overflowing with charm. Mr. H, the manager who guided us to our Room, was incredibly kind and also took great care in showing us around the building. I’m truly grateful to have heard such in-depth stories as well—it made me realize that maintaining an Important Cultural Property involves far more effort than I had imagined. The famous ceiling painting was breathtaking too. Everything was simply stunning; outside, the evening cicadas were singing and made the atmosphere even more special. After fully enjoying Room 15, we headed to the bath—what I’d been looking forward to most: the Onsen. The indoor tiles were so cute, and the Onsen left my skin feeling relaxed and silky-smooth—absolutely wonderful. Every dish was carefully prepared and delicious as well. Thank you so much for accommodating my allergies—I truly appreciate it. Our attendant was also very friendly and lovely. And thank you for providing Shuttle Service too. Being able to stay at “Bansuirou Fukuzumi,” and having encountered this place at all, has become a lifelong memory—I feel so happy to have had such a precious experience. Even if Room 15 becomes a café someday, I’ll be cheering you on. I would love to visit again. The truly precious Important Cultural Property: Bansuirou Fukuzumi

Is this a sign that inbound tourism is surging...?

This was my third stay. It’s conveniently close to Hakone-Yumoto Station. Previously, tea was served in the Room, but this time it was in the lobby. Unfortunately, the sweets had changed from yumochi to kohakuto, which was very disappointing. Kohakuto is a luxury item too, but I remember a staff member once saying, “We’ve always served yumochi,” and I really admired that—so it’s a shame. As for the Room, this time it did not have a bath. That wasn’t an issue because this Ryokan allows access to the large public bath at night as well. I found it odd that the air purifier was placed in the adjoining room; it seems better suited for the main room. The Room was clean and comfortable—very nice. Meals were served in the Room. Since I have knee trouble, I asked for a legless chair with back support (zaisu), and they kindly accommodated me. However, since the table remained low, eating was still a bit difficult. The veranda seating was also zaisu-style. I would be happy if more seating could be changed to chairs overall—at least on the veranda. The cuisine itself was high-level kaiseki; however, because my last stay two years ago was exceptionally outstanding, my expectations were too high and this time felt slightly disappointing by comparison. They may not need to offer an abalone-or-beef choice. The baths are still excellent! The open-air bath is on the hotter side and the indoor bath is milder—the balance is great. I went about four times. Amazing! Perhaps due to inbound tourism demand, it seems to be becoming more expensive Accommodation-wise as well. Still, I want to work hard and come stay again!

A typical thin Japanese futon—quite firm.

I ended up with back pain the next morning from the thin futon and lost the whole day. It didn’t suit me at all—absolutely not for me. I was shocked by the rain leak due to aging. It really made me realize how hard it is to maintain. The meals were delicious, and unlike many Ryokan stays, I was able to finish everything.

We truly enjoyed our stay at a Ryokan in Hakone.

A historic Ryokan. While the Facility is undeniably old, the hospitality and comfort more than made up for it. Especially the meals. For example: tofu, miso soup, rice, nori, and dried horse mackerel for breakfast. They are all classic items, but each one seemed carefully selected and thoughtfully prepared. If I may ask for one thing, since it is such a distinguished historic building, I would love to see an in-house tour or a chance to view it from the garden as well. All of the staff were courteous, and I was able to relax at a leisurely pace while reflecting on the charm of Ryokans from a bygone era. Thank you very much.

We had a truly relaxing and heartwarming stay.

This Accommodation has a long history and a sense of tradition, yet it never makes guests feel intimidated. There are some inconveniences that come with age, but even those felt somehow nostalgic and comforting—overall, it was a truly wonderful Accommodation. I opened the windows of the veranda, listened to the sound of the Hayakawa River, lay down on the tatami mats, and admired each of the 48 ceiling paintings one by one—it was an incredibly luxurious way to spend time. I heard that this Room may be used for another purpose in the future, so being able to enjoy it in such an unreserved way might only be possible for now. The staff were welcoming without being formal, attentive while keeping a comfortable distance, which made my stay very pleasant. I would love to visit again.

Completely satisfied with both the bath and the meals.

Thank you for hosting us for one night. We were truly lucky to be able to make a Reservation during the beautiful season when the cherry blossoms were in bloom. You kindly gave us detailed advice on sightseeing destinations, and both dinner and the baths were wonderful, so we could relax and take our time. Since the baths operate on a rotating schedule, we were able to enjoy both, and we especially had a very relaxing time in the open-air bath. It was a lovely Accommodation where you can feel its history and fully appreciate what makes Hakone so special. Thank you very much.

Recommended for guests seeking a quiet stay.

Because you can hear footsteps from the floor above, I think children at an age where they want to run around would end up having a cramped stay with lots of things they’d have to hold back on if they stayed here. It’s an old building, and repairs are difficult for architecture that can’t be replicated. Considering that, I feel it’s more of an adults-only Accommodation (though that’s just my personal view). That said, I keep coming back with the aim of relaxing at Fukuzumi, and thank you as always for being so considerate toward my husband as well. This was my first stay in two months, and right after stepping into the entrance I was drawn to the comfortable-looking slippers. I’d always felt they were a bit hard to walk in before, so I was very happy to see this improvement. I also liked that the amenities had been changed to Sekkisei; if I may add one request, though, I would personally appreciate it if you could consider body soaps with a gentler scent instead of strongly fragranced ones. I’ve seen posts saying it’s disappointing that the meals have changed, but since then they’ve changed even further. Everything was delicious, and I could really feel spring in the ingredients. Why not visit Fukuzumi again and see how it continues to evolve? As for areas in the guest rooms that need repairs: if everything were renovated to look brand-new, I imagine prices would rise significantly—so we’re grateful to stay while enjoying this as part of its charm. I wasn’t able to bring my elderly mother this time, but if bedrooms with beds and dining at tables and chairs become available going forward, it should make stays easier for those who aren’t comfortable sitting on the floor—and I’m looking forward to what comes next even more. Thank you again for everything this time as well. We look forward to staying with you again.

The Luxury of Staying in a Designated Important Cultural Property

I wanted to stay at an Accommodation with a distinctly Japanese atmosphere, so I chose Bansuirou, a pseudo-Western-style building designated as an Important Cultural Property. This time, I stayed in Room 10 of the Meiji Wing. As you would expect from a building over 100 years old, there were places where you could feel its age in the fittings, and the amenities are not on par with modern Hotels. Still, throughout the property—its glossy dark main pillar, transoms, and tokonoma alcoves—I could truly sense its history and charm. The Onsen is free-flowing from the source, with wonderfully soft water. I enjoyed it so much that I soaked three times a day—in the indoor bathhouse, the large public bath, and the open-air bath. The meals featured seasonal ingredients and carefully prepared dishes that filled the entire low dining table—so much food that I couldn’t finish it all. I was also impressed by our attendant’s thoughtful service in bringing each dish at just the right time. A staff member kindly handed me disposable heat packs after telling me it can be about 5°C cooler in upper Hakone, which made me very happy. It was just before Hinamatsuri as well, and they even showed me an impressive hina doll display set up in Room 15—a room said to have hosted leading figures of the Meiji era. It was a truly special stay. Thank you very much.

    After five years

It’s been a while since our last stay. I’ve visited many Onsens in Hakone, but the Onsen at Fukuzumi left the strongest impression, so we came back. However, as mentioned in some Reviews, it feels like the water quality has declined a bit. Also, it seems the baths are heated in winter, but perhaps the heating is stopped before 10:00 a.m., because the in-room Onsen was lukewarm. My daughters, who wanted to soak until the very last minute, complained that it was cold. The meals weren’t bad, but they also felt different. Last time they were lightly seasoned; simple in appearance yet thoughtfully prepared, and they left a lasting “that was delicious” feeling. This time everything felt ordinary and not particularly memorable. The seasoning was also a bit strong for us Kansai locals. I always take photos of meals at each Accommodation as a keepsake, and even comparing them later, the previous dishes were clearly more elaborate. It’s a long-established Accommodation, and the Room was very clean. There seem to be more foreign guests now. I understand they may be welcoming them so people can experience Japanese Accommodations, but there are downsides as well. Personally, there were many moments when I wished foreign guests would learn more about Japan before staying—when in Rome, do as the Romans do. I hope various aspects will be improved by our next visit.

A long-established Ryokan where you can feel its history.

I stayed here because it is a long-established Ryokan. The Onsen and the meals were great. While I understand the Facility may be dated, I would have appreciated complimentary services such as coffee.

    I visited after a lo...

I visited after a long time. It seems that the number of foreign guests with No Meals Included has increased, and the atmosphere feels a bit different. The Onsen felt slightly cooler than before, and the carbonated sensation seemed to have diminished, but it is still satisfying as an Onsen. The very reasonable pricing is also appealing.

The room bath was also Onsen, which was great.

Stayed at the accommodation with a room bath and in-room dining as requested by my wife. She was very satisfied, spending her time relaxing in the room without stepping out from check-in to check-out. I enjoyed two large communal baths, both of which seemed to be natural hot springs without disinfection—great water quality. The meals were exceptional; the simmered dishes were perhaps the best Japanese cuisine I've ever had. Since our stay was on January 3rd and 4th, we enjoyed a festive New Year's style breakfast on the morning of the 4th.

Fish full of bones that even cats won't eat

The Onsen was excellent as always, but one of the dishes included a fish full of bones, making it the worst meal I've ever had. Doesn't the Hotel staff check the food? I wondered if the chef felt any shame. I miss the days when sesame tofu was served.

    I had a relaxing stay.

We stayed for one night and two days. I had a relaxing time with an old friend in a facility that evoked the charm of bygone days. The moment we entered the room, we noticed the "kotatsu," which became the highlight of this trip. While sightseeing is enjoyable, our goal this time was to relax with my friend, making this accommodation perfect for us. The meals were served in our room, allowing us to have lively conversations and fully enjoy our time together even after dinner under the kotatsu. The only downside was having to wait for the toilet tank to refill before consecutive use, so I deducted one star for that reason. However, aside from that, it was a wonderful accommodation, and I would love to stay here again if given another opportunity!

Excellent hospitality, delicious meals, and an accommodation designated as an Important Cultural Property.

I made a reservation through IKYU based on a recommendation from a friend familiar with Hakone. It was a 2-night, 3-day stay. This is an accommodation designated as an Important Cultural Property by the government. Founded in the second year of Kan'ei era, now run by the 16th generation. I chose to stay in the Meiji Wing Mansuirou for this special occasion. The experience of passing through the entrance of the storehouse was extraordinary and my first time. Upon entering the room, I found a hanging scroll displayed. The room included two spaces, an engawa (veranda), and a garden. The open-air cypress bath used natural hot spring water, even for its shower. This ryokan has no blueprints or design plans from its expansions, making even repairs extremely challenging. Additionally, modern cleaning agents cannot be used for bath maintenance as they might cause damage—another testament to their meticulous care. The hospitality here is exceptional. The tea served is high-grade tea selected with care by the president himself—a luxurious experience enjoyed in rooms designated as Important Cultural Properties. Even towels are embroidered with "Fukuzumi," showing attention to detail and quality investment. From arrival to before meals and after meals, fresh tea sets were prepared each time by attentive staff who brewed tea on every occasion. They also provided water at bedtime—a thoughtful touch. The head chef's skills are remarkable; while there were no extravagant ingredients used, both presentation and taste were outstanding. It seems that many chefs trained under this head chef have gone on to work elsewhere—understandably so! As expected from my foodie friend's recommendation! Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. As an IKYU Diamond Member, I received special perks: A set of three local sake bottles (Hakone no Shizuku, Hakone Kaido & Soga no Homare) at 300ml each per set—two sets for my two-night stay! This was such a delightful bonus for someone who loves sake like me; I brought one set home as souvenirs too! Regarding meals: everything tasted amazing—even condiments like ponzu sauce were homemade! The rice matched that served at high-end restaurants—it was so delicious it left me pleasantly surprised! **Day 1 Menu:** - **Appetizers (3 kinds):** Asparagus tofu / Simmered duck breast / Eel sushi roll - **Sashimi:** Thinly sliced sea bream with condiments & ponzu sauce - **Soup:** Clear broth with grilled sea bream tofu & greens - **Grilled Dish:** Dried barracuda overnight / Pickled ginger shoot / Sweetened chestnut - **Fried Dish:** Corn tempura shrimp ball / Maitake mushroom / Shishito pepper / Lemon & rock salt - **Hot Pot Dish:** Domestic beef sirloin grilled on ceramic plate *Special addition:* Grilled abalone - **Simmered Dish:** Simmered alfonsino fish with daikon radish & roasted green onion - **Rice:** Hitomebore rice from Miyagi Prefecture - **Pickles (3 kinds)** - Red miso soup - Dessert: Kosui pear & Pione grapes **Drinks Included**: Local sake set (Hakone no Shizuku/Hakone Kaido/Soga no Homare) – 300ml

A serene space filled with historical charm

I stayed in the Showa Wing, but upon request, I was kindly guided to the Meiji Wing. Staying in this historically significant space from the early days of Hakone was a truly wonderful experience. The pseudo-Western architecture is classic and solid, offering a perfect blend of Japanese and Western styles, and the hot spring water was exceptional. While the large public bath was great, the private Room bath with a view of the river had an extraordinary charm. Meals were served in-room for both breakfast and dinner, allowing for ultimate relaxation. If I may suggest one improvement, it would be nice to have chairs with views of the river even in Japanese-style rooms. I look forward to visiting again!

A serene Japanese Ryokan with a sense of history

I stayed in a traditional Japanese-style room in a historic accommodation. The structure was solid, and it didn’t feel like a building from the Meiji era. The air conditioning worked very well. Information about the rooms is displayed in the lobby, which made returning to my room even more enjoyable. The front desk staff and room attendants were kind and extremely polite. The Onsen had an indoor bath with lukewarm water and an outdoor bath with hotter water, both featuring soft water that allowed for a relaxing experience. The private hinoki bathtub in the room also used Onsen water, and you could adjust the temperature by mixing hot and cold water to your preference. Opening the window while listening to the sound of the river made it even more pleasant. Meals were excellent in both quality and quantity, incorporating many local ingredients for a delicious dining experience that left me eating too much! Both breakfast and dinner were served in-room, allowing us to enjoy meals leisurely thanks to having two connected rooms. I ended up drinking quite a bit as well! This is definitely an accommodation I would love to visit again!

    It was wonderful.

There was not a single unpleasant or concerning point. The staff, all Japanese, were incredibly attentive and considerate. It had been a while since I stayed at such a Ryokan. With its rich history, it may not be flashy, but it is a wonderfully calming and traditional Ryokan. The meals were served at perfect timing and were all delicious. They even prepared sparkling wine for our anniversary celebration. The baths have gender rotations twice daily at 7 PM and 8:30 AM. Check-out is at 11 AM, and they kindly kept our car until noon so we could explore the area around Yumoto Station with ease. This accommodation is highly recommended for adults seeking relaxation. We stayed here as a couple while our daughter was on her school trip, and everything was perfect—we enjoyed a peaceful and quiet time without any complaints!

    A Relaxing and Timeless Accommodation

I visited with my sister after a long time. Just crossing the bridge leading to the accommodation made us feel detached from the hustle and bustle of the main street. It is a quiet and relaxing accommodation that remains unchanged no matter when we visit. Meals were served in our room, allowing us to enjoy them at our own pace. We also indulged in the onsen and ended our stay by exploring the historic building. It was a perfect escape from busy daily life, offering relaxation and detoxification.

I was especially impressed by the luxurious architecture of bygone times. Although it was a short one-night, two-day stay, it was incredibly satisfying. Thank you very much!

    Exceptional Hospitality

We sincerely appreciate the warm hospitality of all the staff. Every meal was incredibly delicious, and being able to enjoy in-room dining allowed us to relax and enjoy our time even with small children. We were deeply touched by the thoughtful attention to detail. The Room had a charming, vintage design that showed its age, but we had a wonderful time playing hide-and-seek with our child. The large public bath and open-air bath were also very comfortable. We were especially impressed by the open-air bath, which was completely free of insects, reflecting excellent cleaning and environmental management. Overall, it was a truly rejuvenating stay for both body and mind. We would love to visit again!
