The Ultimate Satoyama Stay
I stayed at the accommodation at the beginning of winter when the crisp air felt refreshing. Since I don't usually visit snowy places, it was a very fresh experience! During my stay, I enjoyed a luxurious time doing nothing but relaxing with the onsen and meals. The dining experience was particularly special as I participated in a pre-meal tour that allowed me to explore food culture, making it even more enjoyable and an amazing experience. I would love to visit again in a different season! Thank you so much!!

This was my first stay at the accommodation. I was looking forward to it as it had high ratings and a Michelin 1-key recognition. The dinner and the pre-dinner tour were excellent. Learning about the pantry and its explanation made the meals taste even better. The Koshihikari rice served during dinner, especially the hand-formed rice balls, was exquisite. However, there were some disappointments: - At check-in, I mentioned that I would like red meat to be fully cooked if served, but red duck meat was presented without any comment or explanation. If it couldn't be cooked due to preparation constraints, a simple note would have been appreciated. - The water pressure in the shower at the bath area was low, and one of the showers kept running continuously with hot water leaking out. - From night until morning, there was no staff available at reception; even calling their contact number went unanswered. Calling out near reception or around their back office yielded no response either—this made me wonder what would happen in case of an emergency or sudden illness. I feel this accommodation may not be suitable for those seeking high levels of hospitality.

I just wanted to enjoy the open-air bath and dinner.
Satoyama Jujo: A place to visit with the mindset of enjoying only the open-air bath and dinner! I have visited several times with this strong determination. Dinner, as always, was very delicious. All I hoped for after that was to enjoy the open-air bath, but unfortunately, the water temperature was too low (like a heated pool), and I couldn't stay in it for more than a minute amidst heavy snowfall. The shower in the washing area also stopped producing even water at one point—what on earth happened? There was no explanation from the staff about these issues, leaving it all a mystery. This was my first visit since renovations, but I found that the concept of guest rooms and lounges lacked consistency and felt disjointed, which was disappointing. As for breakfast, it felt like sharing leftover New Year's dishes while shivering in a cold Room under tense staff supervision—it left me feeling quite sad. Even though I had lowered my expectations beforehand, they were still not met—but somehow that's part of what makes it amusing. I'll be back again!

Stay and be convinced. I definitely want to come back again.
Originally, I planned to stay at Matsunoyama Onsen, but since I could arrive a day earlier, I decided to try this place. This Hotel has won the Michelin Guide's new hotel rating "Key" for two consecutive years. Without high expectations and just out of curiosity, I booked a small room. As expected, the room was quite compact, and the sink was so tiny it almost brought tears to my eyes. However, as I enjoyed visiting the bathhouse, exploring a loft-like lounge area, admiring a large wooden mallet on display, savoring dinner, breathing in the crisp morning air amidst satoyama scenery—I gradually found myself feeling more comfortable and not wanting to leave. The staff were kind and attentive; their hospitality is much appreciated. It was truly an excellent Hotel!

The meals and views are wonderful. The Onsen bath area was too cold.
This was our first stay as a couple. Both dinner and breakfast were flavorful and truly delicious. The meals featured plenty of locally sourced vegetables stored in the snow, root vegetables, and mushrooms, making them both healthy and tasty—a perfect combination. We tried both the wine & sake pairing and the non-alcoholic pairing. The non-alcoholic options were creative and interesting. As for the wine & sake pairing, it included 7-8 varieties from renowned Niigata wineries like Cave d'Occi and Fermier, as well as famous sakes such as Hakkaisan and Koshino Kanbai—all for just 12,000 yen. However, I think offering a higher-grade pairing at around 24,000 yen with premium wines from these wineries could appeal to wine enthusiasts. The snowy landscape was stunningly beautiful. The view of the snow-covered scenery from our room or the open-air bath during daylight hours was breathtaking. Additionally, we enjoyed exploring the traditional architecture of an old snow-country house. Although some staff members seemed inexperienced, everyone worked hard with limited numbers while being sincere and kind—making our stay very pleasant. Thank you! There are two areas where I would suggest improvements: First is regarding the Onsen bath area. Visiting late at night or early in the morning felt freezing cold upon entering from the changing room to such an extent that my heart raced due to sudden temperature changes—it was quite uncomfortable! Also, only a small amount of water came out of the showerhead; washing before soaking in hot water left me shivering throughout wintertime use risks accidents under these conditions! Perhaps renovations could enclose spaces better add floor heating within baths increase shower-water flow rates improve overall comfort levels significantly? Secondly considering accommodation costs enhancing drink services might justify pricing further example discontinuing whiskey-bar understandable safety-efficiency reasons upgrading canned-bottled beverages available instead worthwhile idea snacks observed empty shelves past nine pm suggesting insufficient quantities compared similar all-inclusive accommodations lower price ranges offering abundant enjoyable food-drink selections nowadays common practice elsewhere! Despite everything mentioned above this remains wonderful accommodation serving excellent cuisine thank-you again much appreciated experience!

It was excellent.
Second stay after 8 years. The facility and service were excellent, and the food was incredibly delicious as always. If I may add, it would be great if the sauna were available as a complimentary service.

Photos of Guest Rooms with Open-Air Baths
It was a wonderful accommodation with a great atmosphere. However, the photos of the private open-air bath on the website were different from reality, which was disappointing as I specifically chose and made the reservation based on them. The meals were good, but due to the large number of dishes, it extended past 10 PM. Since it is very filling, it would be nice if they could reduce the number of dishes or make some adjustments.

Experience the Beauty of Nature
The accommodation's ambiance and hospitality allowed me to fully appreciate the beauty of Japan's nature. I was especially moved by the chef's dedication to ingredients and respect for producers. The delicate flavors of the rice, from its initial simmering to its final preparation, were unforgettable. I look forward to visiting again during the snowy season.

The accommodation had an image similar to Matsumoto Jujo, but apart from the atmosphere and dinner, everything else was disappointing. The onsen and breakfast were particularly underwhelming. The room bath did not have automatic hot water, so it couldn't be used in the morning. The public bath was also small and felt crowded considering the number of guests, making it difficult to relax.

Improvement in reception service is needed.
I made a Reservation at "Satoyama Jujo" to celebrate my wife's birthday, but unfortunately, I was slightly disappointed with the service. Firstly, during breakfast the next morning, we noticed that while other tables were being served egg dishes as we were finishing our meal, our table was not. It seemed like an oversight in service, but since we had already finished eating, we did not request it. Additionally, as we planned to check out at 10:00 AM due to our Shinkansen schedule, there was no one at the front desk. Despite searching for staff members for some time, it took a while before we could find someone to assist us with the checkout process. Comparing the price paid and the service received left me feeling there was a gap in expectations. I hope more heartfelt service will be provided in the future.

Vegetables and rice
The traditional Japanese house atmosphere and furniture were wonderful, and the meals were healthy and delicious as expected. However, the washing area in the Onsen was cold, and the shower water pressure was weak, which made me worry about catching a cold. This was a bit disappointing.

I thoroughly enjoyed the charming space filled with classic chairs, antique furniture, and tasteful rugs in a traditional Japanese house, offering plenty of cozy spots to relax. The food was gentle in flavor, allowing me to fully savor the natural taste of the vegetables—it was absolutely delicious. I even wanted to take some pickles home! The bath experience was incredible, with breathtaking mountain views during the morning soak and a sky full of stars at night. It would be great if there were more Shuttle Service options available. I would love to visit again!

We stayed here for our wedding anniversary. The Room was lovely, and the view from the Room was amazing. However, the shower attached to the open-air bath only had cold water at first. Although it was adjusted to provide hot water, the water pressure was too weak, so we ended up using the public bath instead. Additionally, there were stink bugs all over the building and even in our Room despite trying to get rid of them repeatedly, which was disappointing. The meals were absolutely delicious! Both dinner and breakfast exceeded our expectations, and we were delighted with the anniversary plate they prepared for us!

We chose Satoyama Jujo for our long-awaited trip...
After experiencing Matsumoto Jujo and Hakone Honbako, we had high expectations for Satoyama Jujo. Unfortunately, it was disappointing. When we were enjoying the welcome drink, several staff members carrying meals passed by us without any greetings. It seems this might be part of their training? It felt a bit lonely without any acknowledgment from the staff. During dinner, we requested sake pairing but received no explanation about which dish each sake was paired with. The timing of the pairings also seemed slightly off, and when we asked midway through the meal, some dishes were already finished. This made us wonder if there was less enthusiasm for food and drinks or if they were simply too busy. Additionally, when asking questions about the meal, one staff member would go to check in the back while another came to explain—causing some inconvenience on our part as well as theirs. Having enjoyed Matsumoto Jujo and Hakone Honbako so much before, perhaps our expectations were too high this time around. Unfortunately, it turned out to be our most disappointing stay yet.

Review of Operations
This was my third visit, and I always look forward to the food. The dishes this time were also excellent and very delicious. However, the service was extremely disappointing. Our dinner started at 5:00 PM, and while we were seated, by 5:38 PM, neighboring tables had already finished their first course. At our table, nothing had been served yet. At 5:42 PM, the dish finally brought to us turned out to be the second course that other tables were receiving. After observing the surroundings carefully, I asked a staff member if this was indeed the second course; they confirmed it was. I then explained that we hadn’t received our first course yet. Shortly after that, our forgotten first course was served—but this is unacceptable for a starred restaurant. I heard there has been staff turnover with new members still getting accustomed to their roles; however, I feel operational processes need to be reviewed thoroughly. This experience was very disappointing overall.

Thank you for your support.
Beautiful scenery, excellent Onsen quality, educational meals, and great hospitality every time. This time, we stayed in Room I, which felt a bit compact but offered breathtaking views like a painting all day long. My husband and I decided to choose this room again next time. We look forward to visiting during a different season. Wishing everyone good health as the weather gets colder!

Used for a marriage celebration.
We stayed here to celebrate our marriage in November. As someone originally from Niigata now living in Tokyo, I had always recognized this as a luxury accommodation in my hometown and was looking forward to experiencing it. The meals made with local ingredients were all delicious, and the seasonal dishes left both our stomachs and hearts full. The lounge offered a great selection of free drinks and snacks. From gathering around the fireplace to enjoying courses in a spacious room with high ceilings, we were very satisfied with the extraordinary atmosphere. However, considering the accommodation cost of approximately 100,000 yen, there were several areas where more attention to detail would have been appreciated. 【Service】 - We used a taxi arranged by staff to get to Osawa Station (about 5 minutes by car). Unfortunately, despite informing them of the train schedule (only one train per hour), they called for the taxi about 45 minutes before its arrival at Osawa Station. This resulted in us waiting over 20 minutes at an unmanned station under poor weather conditions. It would have been helpful if more consideration had been given to train timings when arranging transportation. - While this may vary depending on personal preference, I felt that there could have been more interaction between staff and guests coming from afar—such as asking why they chose this accommodation or how they found it—which could provide opportunities for personalized services based on their stories. 【Cleanliness & Maintenance】 - There was a large spider web outside our room window as well as other noticeable webs throughout various areas. - The rental car (a new Suzuki Jimny) had significant dirt stains. 【Facilities】 - The shampoo containers had small pump openings which made them difficult to use. - Our room included an outdoor shower area attached near its private bath; however being exposed outdoors made it uncomfortably cold especially since only overhead rainfall-style showers without hoses were available. Overall impression suggests challenges related either due limited staffing levels or training gaps observed during interactions such delays while waiting assistance within lobby dining arrangements etc., possibly reflecting regional labor shortages issues requiring addressing improvements moving forward positively enhancing guest experiences further ahead! Thank you again hosting us during stay!

Local production for local consumption and the world of fermentation are profoundly deep.
This was my first stay. The room was not very spacious, but the bed and the down comforter were wonderfully warm. I even want to buy this comforter! The bath had an open-air option, which was quite lukewarm. While hand towels were available, it was a bit inconvenient that there wasn’t a collection box for them. Both dinner and breakfast were absolutely impressive. The rich flavor of beans I had never tasted before, the umami of fermented foods, and the variety of ingredients offered a quality that can only be experienced here. Although the meal service felt a bit rushed at times, this accommodation is so exceptional that I would definitely like to visit again. Thank you very much!

It was excellent last time.
We felt a little disappointed this time. There were some issues, such as forgetting to hand over purchased items, no staff at the entrance, and not responding when called. The meals were, of course, delicious but lacked sufficient explanation, which was slightly disappointing. The bath was excellent. Room 101: only the bed was a bit unsatisfactory.

Healthy meals and relaxation in a traditional Japanese house
This was my first visit. I had seen it in magazines several times and always wanted to come. The evening started wonderfully with a kitchen tour before dinner, where we saw the herb garden, enjoyed appetizers made with freshly picked herbs around a bonfire, and then moved on to a delightful meal. In a private dining room, we savored dishes that gently reflected the local flavors of Niigata. Initially, I thought the portions or seasoning might be insufficient, but I ended up feeling completely satisfied. The rice cooked in an earthen pot was glossy and delicious as well. Our Room did not have a mountain view, so it was slightly disappointing that we could only enjoy the mountain scenery while in the bath. It might be better to choose your Room based on its view preferences.

It was a terrible accommodation.
I have already written a review about the poor guidance, terrible meal quality, unsafe windows and kitchen doors, and the musty-smelling room without screens or proper ventilation in this Facility. At the very least, if the meals were delicious, it could have eased everyone's feelings. The dishes seemed amateurish; frankly speaking, I believe I could cook something much better myself. Regardless of who is cooking, they should follow recipes from top-class chefs. Who would be impressed by such tasteless and non-fresh food? Well, as I mentioned this in my previous Review as well, I'll leave it at that. I am a Diamond Member of IKYU.com. Diamond Members are supposed to receive various services like "Original Blend Herbal Tea - Iwami Koucha (1 set per stay)," but I did not receive it. Also, what does "One Complimentary Drink per Person during Dinner" mean? I don't recall receiving that either. Please ensure you provide what you promise. The phone line is unavailable after 4:00 PM. Even when trying to call via internal phone at 8:00 PM, no one answered despite the ringing tone continuing endlessly. It was impossible to confirm anything under such a system—utterly disappointing!

Accommodation that leaves a disappointing impression
The guidance was unhelpful. There were no clear signs at the entrance to indicate which building was which, causing confusion. Additionally, the inquiry phone line was a high-cost service and stopped accepting calls at 4:00 PM, leaving guests wandering outside for an hour. If it’s unmanned accommodation, at least the phone should be available anytime. Finally entering the house, it smelled strongly of mold. Ventilation wasn’t possible as there were no screens on the windows, and mosquitoes swarmed in if opened. After wiping down various areas with alcohol wipes, it became slightly better. The glass door in the kitchen had no curtains and offered a full view inside from outside. There was nothing to block visibility from neighboring houses; anyone could easily see in—especially at night when lights are on inside but you can’t see out from within. Being on the ground floor made this extremely uncomfortable. There were also reports of bears in the area; one swipe could allow them entry into this poorly secured accommodation—this felt genuinely frightening. On day two, I couldn’t bear it anymore and used gowns and bath towels as makeshift covers for privacy. The same issue applied to the toilet area—a large glass door without any covering faced nearby houses directly behind us. Again, I had to use bath towels for privacy. Now about meals: Dinner on day one featured beef shabu-shabu; day two offered pork hot pot (Jōya-nabe). The meat itself had just enough fat content and tasted good; however, side dishes were poorly seasoned or overcooked/undercooked—like tough simmered dried daikon radish lacking flavor or bland hijiki seaweed stew. Even self-made hand-rolled sushi didn’t fare well—the rice clumped together too hard while accompanying shrimp or tuna (grayish-colored) lacked freshness or taste appeal altogether. Breakfast included rice cooked in an earthenware pot but remained undercooked with hard centers—a waste of good-quality grains! Raw eggs weren’t flavorful either while other items like fish stew/miso soup suffered similarly poor seasoning quality across all meals served here overall diminishing appetite among everyone present entirely! Whoever plans these menus needs professional help perhaps consulting top chefs designing recipes ensuring proper execution thereafter because current standards fail miserably lacking basic balance between soy sauce/sugar ratios alongside improper cooking techniques ruining guest experiences outrightly discouraging repeat visits inevitably! Free drinks included six bottles daily featuring local sake (720ml each), smaller-sized beers & mandarin orange juice stocked neatly within refrigerators alongside coffee/tea options both tasting excellent thankfully redeeming some points amidst otherwise disappointing stay experience overall marred by structural flaws making return unlikely ever again especially after enduring loud banging noises echoing throughout second night despite adjacent rooms reportedly vacant altogether!

Not bad, but...
I had the opportunity to visit Niigata and decided to stay at this accommodation for the first time after hearing about its high reviews. The natural surroundings were beautiful, and the food was delicious, making it an attractive accommodation for those living in urban areas. However, balancing eco-friendly policies with convenience seems challenging. For the price, the amenities were underwhelming, and I found it uncomfortable that there were no toilet slippers provided. Additionally, foreign guests brought large suitcases which staff rolled down the hallway to their rooms. Without an elevator, this seemed tough on female staff members and might not meet post-pandemic hygiene standards expected by Japanese guests today. The room included an open-air bath; however, the water was pre-filled and could neither be adjusted nor replenished when reduced—a rather inconvenient setup. As for the public bath area, while spacious open-air baths offered a sense of freedom, washing areas and dressing rooms felt cramped without air conditioning—making it quite hot inside. The open-air bath lacked ocean views but gave off a vulnerable impression as if external access might be easy (though likely not in reality). Inside my room, I couldn’t figure out how to operate the towel warmer due to lack of labeling—stickers or instructions would help here. The safety box was broken initially but promptly fixed with a battery replacement by helpful staff members whom I appreciated greatly. There are no massage or spa services available here; given its location though this is understandable. I opted for non-alcoholic pairing as an add-on option but noticed IKYU.com’s page suggested discounts when reserving through them beforehand—it turned out priced at full rate instead which felt misleading. They also offer plans like "Multiple Night Stay for Creative Activities," yet being such a luxurious accommodation makes it more suitable perhaps only if accustomed already toward upscale city lifestyles otherwise one night suffices perfectly fine!

It was overly anticipated.
As an IKYU Plus+ accommodation, I had high expectations, but it was somewhat disappointing. - About the Room The Kura 01 building had a refreshing wooden scent and was a clean room, which was nice. However, there were no curtains on any of the windows, which caused inconvenience. Near the window in the bathroom's changing area, there were private houses visible. To avoid being seen, I had to crouch down low while changing clothes, which was troublesome. In the bedroom, it became bright after 5 AM and I couldn't help waking up despite wanting to sleep longer due to fatigue. - About Meals I chose a plan with dinner and breakfast included but couldn't help questioning if this really met IKYU Plus+ standards based on dinner quality. For instance: The marinated tuna for hand-rolled sushi had already turned grayish in color; whether it was old or discolored by seasoning remained unclear as I ate with concern. Some ingredients listed on the menu were missing without prior explanation or replacement items that seemed unfamiliar appeared instead. The crab chirashi sushi rice used for hand rolls would have been better served separately so that crab could also be presented as an ingredient option itself rather than mixed into rice entirely—soy sauce accompaniment would’ve enhanced flavors too! While shabu-shabu beef tasted good overall additional condiments like Kanzuri chili paste might've elevated experience further! Breakfast featured glossy freshly cooked rice from earthenware pot tasting absolutely delicious though broth provided alongside tea-pickled dishes felt overly salty compared against surprisingly bland simmered vegetables leaving me puzzled balance-wise! Does high praise regarding meals only apply specifically towards restaurant dining within facilities? - About Service Staff preparing/serving meals left positive impressions through their demeanor yet post-dinner cleanup process lacked clarity leading multiple unanswered calls reception desk seeking guidance beforehand would've helped alleviate confusion here significantly! Ice cubes found freezer stuck together requiring effort break apart manually before usable cups suggesting pre-checks necessary ensure usability ahead guest arrival likewise absence Nespresso machine instructions hindered ease operation unnecessarily detracting convenience factor otherwise expected such accommodations level pricing comparison SATOYAMA JUJO lower cost alternative delivering abundant delicious cuisine attentive services makes disappointment more pronounced contextually speaking overall experience

An accommodation that sharpens your senses.
A perfect accommodation in every way. While preserving old traditions, the convenience and comfort provided are truly impressive. The nearest station is unmanned, and there’s nothing much around, but they offer a pick-up service timed with check-in and welcome you with delightful sweets in a beautiful space. Before dinner, the chef's explanation of the ingredients was a valuable opportunity to learn about Japan's rich traditions. On the way to the open-air bath, you might be greeted by frogs. For those who dislike insects, it could be challenging; however, in today's world where nature is disappearing, it’s a rare chance to appreciate its beauty. The meals were abundant with mountain vegetables, meat, and fish—each dish offering both richness and novelty that made every moment exciting. Visiting during different seasons would provide new perspectives—I look forward to coming back again. Thank you!

A Memorable Trip to Celebrate My Wife's Birthday
The 150-year-old wooden structure was truly impressive, and I was delighted to see the "Uchide no Kozuchi." Additionally, we were upgraded to a higher-grade room, and Chef Kuwakino's dishes were gentle and delicious, leaving us very satisfied. The morning walk around the accommodation was enjoyable, and the staff's balance of attentiveness perfectly matched the concept, creating unforgettable memories. Stunning Views and Exquisite Cuisine
Escape the sweltering heat of Kyushu and head to Niigata. Surprisingly, the daytime heat is just as intense! However, sitting by the open-air bath with a gentle breeze makes it all worthwhile. With almost no buildings around except for Satoyama Jujo, it feels like you have the stunning scenery all to yourself. The meals were another highlight of the trip. I thoroughly enjoyed unique dishes inspired by Niigata's local cuisine paired with exquisite sake. The flavors were unlike anything I could find in Kyushu, and as expected from a region famous for its rice, the freshly cooked rice in an earthen pot was so delicious that I couldn't stop going back for more. Just being able to enjoy such incredible food made this trip worthwhile. Reflecting on this while soaking in the outdoor bath under a sky full of stars after dinner made it an unforgettable experience.

Reviews of Satoyama Jujo
1. The pairing during dinner is said to be more economical if reserved in advance, but the price remains the same when ordered on the day. The only difference is receiving an extra glass, but this was not explained on the day. 2. A non-alcoholic pairing included a drink mixed with kombucha; however, staff described it as "kombu tea." When asked if it was a mistake and actually kombucha (fermented tea), no further explanation was provided by staff. Later, upon asking again if it was indeed kombucha, they confirmed with "Yes, that's correct!" Mistakes should be corrected proactively. 3. The bed is too soft and causes back pain. 4. The lighting in the dining area is too dim. It does not highlight what needs to be illuminated, making meals appear less appetizing and menus hard to read. Additionally, my wife mentioned that the lighting at the sink in our room was also too dim for applying makeup comfortably. Overall, I feel that areas requiring proper illumination are neglected in favor of aesthetic-focused lighting. 5. Staff generally seemed inexperienced and gave off a part-time worker impression. This accommodation may suit those who prefer high-end accommodations where service is provided by individuals without prior hospitality experience. I do not think I will visit again.
