A truly one-of-a-kind experience. I felt this is an Accommodation that represents Japan.
Because of my work, I stay at many Hotels and Ryokans, but it’s rare to find an Accommodation this unique and so confidently true to its own style. In addition to earning Michelin stars for its cuisine, the quality fully justified its Michelin Key as a Hotel. That said, precisely because the individuality is so bold, - Those with strong beliefs about “what a luxury Ryokan should be” - Those who would flatly say “this level of service or operation is unacceptable” - Those who can’t help focusing on negatives will probably find this Accommodation not for them. It’s true there were a few moments when I thought, “This could be improved a bit…,” though not many. But those small points faded away in the face of the extraordinary space, open-air bath, Onsen, sauna, and the many memorable meals and experiences. I visited in early summer, when the scent of fresh greenery was at its best. Gazing at the Echigo mountains in the distance left both my mind and body completely refreshed. Please keep moving forward with your world fully intact—without being swayed by odd Reviews. As one fan among many, I’ll continue cheering you on.

A Relaxing Space
It was a wonderfully relaxing space, with no TV or music—almost completely cut off from the outside world. The meals were delicious, and you could really tell they were carefully prepared using local ingredients. The rice was so good I ate too much; at dinner I couldn’t finish my portion, and at the staff’s suggestion they made it into onigiri for a late-night snack. After my bath, when I got a little hungry, it was great to have those small onigiri to enjoy. I also really appreciated being able to sit in a lovely chair in the lounge and freely enjoy soft drinks or alcohol along with light snacks. I’d love to stay again.

This Accommodation invites you to rethink what true luxury means.
I stayed for one night from August 23, 2026, in the detached annex “Kura.” The Room has a private open-air bath and faces the mountains, so it was exceptionally quiet. I could truly relax without worrying about being seen and enjoy a genuinely private stay. The two-story Room with a loft had four beds and was spacious enough for our family of three. The furniture and furnishings felt carefully chosen, creating a refined and comfortable space. Most impressive was that even with the shoji screens fully open, I never felt concerned about outside views—while still feeling nature right beside me from inside the Room. Spending time with the presence of the mountains so close by was an irreplaceable kind of healing. The Onsen water felt silky and gentle on the skin, and because it’s kept at a slightly lower temperature, it’s perfect for soaking slowly while taking in the scenery. The morning view from the large public bath was especially breathtaking. I was lucky enough to have it almost to myself at sunrise; being surrounded by morning light reflected both from the sky and across the water’s surface in such vast nature was deeply moving—almost to tears. The meals were full of nourishing flavors that brought out each ingredient’s natural character to its fullest. True to their words that “rice is the real main,” the clay-pot rice cooked right in front of us was outstanding—and tasting it as it transformed into perfectly cooked rice was an experience unique to this Accommodation. I also appreciated hearing how they purchase an entire head of native Tankaku cattle and use every part without waste; their gratitude for nature’s gifts and respect for each ingredient came through clearly. This Accommodation reminded me that true luxury isn’t only about lavish Facilities or excessive service—it may be spending quiet time in rich nature while savoring what the land provides. I would love to return in another season. Thank you very much for a wonderful stay.

The “Sanae-kyo” dining experience and the Onsen at “Yudokoro Amanogawa” were outstanding!
My mother and I stayed here as a group of three. On the pre-dinner tour, we were introduced to Satoyama Jujo’s herbs, and at the end we tasted herbs the chef had just picked—an outstanding appetizer and a wonderful memory. Our stay was exactly what we had hoped for. The one-of-a-kind Sanae-kyo cuisine and the Onsen at Yudokoro Amanogawa were exceptional, and we enjoyed them to the fullest. On our evening walk, we heard fireflies and frogs, giving us a rare chance to experience nature in a way we normally wouldn’t—something our whole family truly appreciated. After hearing the chef’s stories on the tour, we’d love to visit again in winter when there is snow, and we’re already looking forward to next time.

Library…
It was an outstanding stay with almost nothing to complain about. The maisonette-style Room was spacious and relaxing, and the open-air bath attached to the Room facing the large pond had wonderful water quality—I enjoyed it many times. The ayu soba and mushrooms at dinner were exquisite and became an unforgettable taste. I would definitely like to stay again in the future, but I believe it could be even more perfect if you could consider the following points. - Breakfast was simple and delicious, but it was a shame there was no yogurt. There may not be a local dairy farm, but I think yogurt at breakfast is a common routine for many households. - Matsumoto Jujo, which is operated by the same company (Jiyujin Co., Ltd.), had an exceptionally well-stocked library. At Satoyama Jujo, even with a lounge, it felt a little disappointing not to have a library. Please consider this if possible.

I was able to relax and unwind while enjoying nature.
It was my first time in a while to unplug from my phone and truly relax. After checking in while enjoying the welcome service in the lovely lounge, I unwound in my Room. Unfortunately, it was rainy, but I spent hours watching raindrops ripple across the pond, listening to insects, enjoying coffee and drinks, having ice cream, reading, soaking in the Onsen, and taking a morning walk around the rice fields—an incredibly luxurious time. The meals featured plenty of vegetables and were wonderful with the paired drinks. The freshly cooked rice prepared on the spot was especially memorable. I’d love to return on a clear day to enjoy the starry sky.

It was so relaxing!
The chef-led ingredient tour was a wonderful experience. After hearing fascinating stories about herbs and the 24 seasonal divisions, the meal felt even more in tune with the season, and I was truly satisfied. The lounge chairs were very comfortable, and I ended up staying longer than planned. The furniture and artworks placed throughout the property were all beautiful. Everything was clean and well maintained, making my stay very pleasant. It was a lovely morning to wake up to birdsong instead of an alarm clock. I’d love to visit again in a different season.

The snowy winter season is beautiful, but Minamiuonuma in summer was also lush and wonderful. The meals were delicious as well. Thank you very much.

Just as the reviews ...
Just as the reviews said, the meals were truly memorable. Some ingredients I usually avoid were listed on the menu, but I ended up finishing everything and even wondered why I had disliked them before. I couldn’t finish the final rice dish, so I really appreciated that they made it into onigiri for me. During my stay, there was a good selection of drinks and ice cream, so I didn’t have any trouble even without going out. I also went to the open-air bath both at night and in the morning, and not only the Onsen but also the scenery made it a wonderful memory.

A Happy Time
One night stay with three friends from high school. As a Hans Wegner fan, I had the best time imaginable, and every thoughtfully crafted detail—the space, the meals, everything—made me truly happy.

I expected a bit more.
The atmosphere of this quiet traditional house in the mountains was nice, but there were several service issues that I could not accept, so I will list them below. - Although there was a coffee maker in the Room, there were no coffee cups, so I had to drink from a small glass that nearly overflowed. In the lounge, I was told to drink from the take-away stainless-steel bottle provided, but that bottle was too large to fit under the coffee maker. Also, in the lounge I would still like to drink from a proper ceramic mug. It felt like drinking a take-out beverage. The bottle was bulky, so I ended up leaving it at the Accommodation anyway—this is not eco-friendly at all. If there is not enough staff time to wash cups, it would be better to place dedicated mugs in each Room and have guests bring them. - The website said sake would be served during bar time, but none was offered. When I asked staff, they said it had changed. The website should be corrected immediately. - For an Accommodation of this level, both samue and yukata should be provided as loungewear. Also, although mine was labeled women’s M size, it was far too long—so long that I wondered if it had been mistaken for a men’s size. - Bath towels had to be brought from the Room. Only face towels were available at the bath area for use there, but there was no box or container for wet towels at the bath area; you have to carry them back to your Room as-is. At minimum, could you provide plastic bags for wet items? - As a tea lover, I was disappointed that there was no black tea either in the Room or in the lounge. - The slippers used when changing for the bath felt unhygienic because you don’t know who wore them before you. Many places now use numbered tags for shoes/slippers. - The open-air bath with its spectacular view is wonderful, but it is quite small; when fully booked it seems likely to get very crowded. - The rice with meals was delicious; even the onigiri prepared for us tasted great. Otherwise it felt like mainly mountain vegetable dishes and may not be satisfying for men in particular. Nothing stood out as exceptionally delicious. - If no one is stationed at reception/front desk area (front desk), you should leave clear instructions on the counter such as “Please ring this buzzer” or “Please call extension ___.” An Accommodation that cannot respond in an emergency is unacceptable.

Just as reputed, the...
Just as reputed, the Onsen and the cuisine were both outstanding. Dinner came with a story for each dish, and we truly enjoyed a meal that felt nourishing and good for the body. Because it was a last-minute Reservation, I didn’t realize there was no elevator and ended up bringing my elderly mother. Thanks to the staff’s thoughtful care—changing our dining location and checking in on us—we were able to stay comfortably, for which I am very grateful. If I could ask for just one thing, it would be handrails in the bathtub area. Due to the water quality, the floor can be slippery, which could feel risky even for those who aren’t elderly. It would also be reassuring to have some kind of support in at least part of the space leading from the indoor bath to the open-air bath. Other than that, it was an Accommodation we were fully satisfied with.

Very disappointing.
First time posting an IKYU Review. I think this Accommodation is one where opinions will be divided. Even if you Reserve through a booking site, I recommend reading the official website first. Setting In the mountains A location with views of Mt. Makihata (one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains) from the Room I think the best season is autumn and winter Facility Various drinks and snacks in the lounge Free Häagen-Dazs and local ice cream available all day There is a large public bath with spectacular views, but it was unavailable due to a boiler failure on the day, so I did not include it in my rating Private sauna available for an additional fee Guest Room Great view The open-air Onsen bath in the Room is not free-flowing; if it overflows while bathing, the water level stays lower afterward Since there is no hot water refill, it’s best to soak gently to avoid overflowing Dining Excellent It may not appeal to everyone, but as gastronomy it is outstanding We ordered both a sake pairing and a non-alcoholic pairing. (There was little storytelling or explanation; it felt like a simple add-on option.) Hospitality Very disappointing The official website says they are “not an Accommodation that competes on service,” but since they also position themselves as an experience-focused stay, I wish they put more effort into elements that create that experience. This time, due to the boiler failure in the large public bath, we were directed to use baths at another facility and were even given a notice saying we could use it “as a special courtesy.” It felt like they didn’t understand their own strengths at all. Although we should have been able to freely use their scenic open-air bath until checkout, the substitute was an Onsen facility at an affiliated property. Normally I would think “that’s unfortunate but unavoidable,” but their operation was extremely poor: - “We will exceptionally allow you to use this paid facility for free.” - “It’s far from the Accommodation so we’ll provide Shuttle Service—but only twice (17:00 and 19:00). Otherwise please go by paid taxi or your own car.” They told us this after serving welcome beer, so realistically our only options were Shuttle Service or taxi. - When we returned from that facility, staff asked with smiles, “How was the bath?” There’s no way it could be good. It was just a standard bathing facility with no view. We didn’t come just to soak in hot springs—we came expecting an open-air bath while looking out over one of Japan’s 100 Famous Mountains. Overall Impression All of this makes it especially disappointing because the food is so good. My impression is that this Accommodation relies on its cuisine (5 stars for dining; 3 stars for everything else). If it were simply positioned as an auberge-style stay I wouldn’t complain much—but because their official website sets such high expectations, my evaluation reflects that. I don’t feel the overall experience matches what you pay (if everything had been available at JPY 150,000 including access to their large public bath facilities until checkout—then maybe 4 stars). You can tell everyone working there is doing their best, but simplifying service or cutting costs is fine—careless operations are not.

We’re sorry to hear that.
I had very high expectations for the meals. However, rather than a menu, it felt like the dishes were built around booklet-style explanations of wild mountain vegetables. One of the pleasures of staying at an Accommodation is enjoying delicious food. When you eat, “Delicious!” should come first, and only then do you wonder how it was made. Instead of emphasizing how much effort goes into the cooking, I wished there were more ingenuity in bringing out the natural flavor of the ingredients—especially the wild vegetables—to their fullest. It felt like too much was done to them, and their original taste was diminished. ← Dinner Breakfast included simmered dried daikon strips, simmered hijiki seaweed, etc. Everything was just what I regularly eat at home. It would have been fine if the seasoning had been outstanding, but… I was somewhat shocked. About the Room: The sink area, toilet, and shower room were all in one space, but it is far too small. Also, despite being a wet area, there were no slippers. With the idea of offering a non-everyday experience, there was no TV. As a feature of this Accommodation—detox cuisine and promoting an “escape from everyday life” in the Room— will you continue to target only guests who specifically want that? Do you intend to welcome guests who want delicious meals and a relaxing Room at an Accommodation for a special getaway? I find this interesting. The staff members were very pleasant and left a great impression.

A secluded, luxurious Hotel Ryokan nestled in the mountains
It was a very satisfying Hotel. Outside the window, it was just the season of fresh greenery, like a painting, and I could fully relax while soaking in the cypress bath set on the spacious terrace. Art can be enjoyed throughout the property, and the building itself features wonderful traditional Japanese woodwork that feels calm and comforting. The much-talked-about dinner used plenty of local ingredients while maintaining an elegant flavor profile. Each sauce—carefully strained from vegetables—was perfect, and I felt each one alone was worthy of being a dish in its own right. The only slight disappointment was the service during meal delivery: some staff gave careful explanations, while others simply said “this is meat” and left, so there still seems to be room for improvement. I had seen it often on social media and visited out of curiosity, but it was definitely worth going.

It’s wonderful, but…
There are many wonderful aspects: the Accommodation’s design, its collection of artworks, the Onsen and views from the Room, and the variety and quality of drinks in the lounge. Although my rating is low, the food is delicious. However, the wine in the paid sake-and-wine pairing was honestly quite disappointing. Some regular-looking ladies had dinner with “hot tea” throughout, so that may actually have been the best choice. Also, without going into details, it felt like there were far too few staff. And there are too few mirrors in the Room, which makes getting ready a bit difficult.

It was a truly wonderful stay that far exceeded my expectations. After returning home, I reread Satoyama Jujo’s “Redefine Luxury” concept and reflected on what true luxury and value really mean. I felt nourished by the wholesome flavors, and deeply detoxed from the core of my body.

An Accommodation where you go to connect, not just to stay.
Satoyama Jujo was not just an Onsen Accommodation. It is a place with a clear philosophy, weaving local life, cuisine, and aesthetics into a single experience. Folk-craft tableware, regional ingredients, and timeless architecture—none of it feels dated. Instead, it comes together with surprising refinement, and I found myself repeatedly sighing in admiration at the richness still hidden in rural Japan. Dinner in particular was extraordinary: dish after dish that treats the gifts of the mountains boldly yet delicately. Paired with local sake, the harmony felt possible only through a deep understanding of this land—each plate unfolding like a new landscape. From the view from the room to a single chair placed in the corridor to even one cup of tea served to you, everything carries an answer to “why this,” turning the stay itself into quiet time for reflection and learning. I wholeheartedly recommend this Accommodation to anyone who wants to step away from busy everyday life and reconnect with their senses.

Breathtaking snowy mountain views and a fun stroll to shop for local ingredients. Even more reassuring with a well-organized contact system.
The view of the snow-covered mountains was truly breathtaking, and the ingredient walk guided by the chef was fun and memorable. It was a unique experience you can only have here, and it made for a wonderful stay. On the other hand, I caused some trouble due to my own mistake. While I’m grateful for your help, I’m sorry for the inconvenience. However, it felt a bit unsettling that the publicly listed phone number is only reachable until 4:00 PM. There was information at the front desk about an emergency contact number, but I would feel even more reassured if calls to the publicly listed number also provided guidance to that emergency contact.

What a shame!
I had been looking forward to visiting for many years, so perhaps my expectations were too high. We stayed in a Room with an open-air bath, but after using it once, the water level dropped and the water became lukewarm. When we called the front desk, we were told it would take 30 minutes. We understand it was also our fault for not checking again after 30 minutes, but when we tried to use it a few hours later, nothing had changed. We contacted the front desk again and were told it would take about 30 minutes. During dinner, after having alcohol, we asked for tea. At checkout, we learned that the tea cost 1,100 yen. Perhaps this was written on the drink menu, but we would have appreciated being informed when we ordered it. We assumed tea during meals was complimentary. Only one set of loungewear was provided, so we ended up sleeping in the same outfit; we would have liked separate sleepwear. We came expecting a special Accommodation, but it felt like an ordinary Accommodation. Considering the Accommodation fee of 60,000 yen, I felt it was below average rather than standard.

I stay here every ye...
I stay here every year. I love the baths and the quiet atmosphere. The gradual changes are, if anything, a bit disappointing, but considering various circumstances, I suppose it can’t be helped. The breathtaking view from the bath is truly one of a kind, but perhaps due to the recently added sauna, loud voices echo more often, and I’m also very concerned about a boiler? gas smell. It’s really disappointing that the air doesn’t feel fresh despite such a great setting. There are more foreign staff now. Their hard work comes through, but differences in sensibilities are something we just have to accept. For example, being spoken to in the bath changing area even when I’m still undressed. Or when I want to ask a little about the local area but don’t feel comfortable doing so. The free drinks selection has improved with beer, juice, and ice cream, but it’s disappointing that plum wine and herbal tea are no longer available. It’s nice that you can enjoy the feel of the wood by wearing socks instead of slippers on purpose, but please keep an eye on water droplets at all times. Near the entrance and in/around the changing area there’s a high chance your socks will get wet. Also, I’d like slippers in the shared toilets. I requested this before as well—I'm very concerned about hygiene. Amenities are minimal. The sink area in a small Room is extremely cramped. The loungewear looks quite worn from repeated use, though it is comfortable. Breakfast has become as simple as it could possibly be. Neither breakfast nor dinner uses particularly luxurious ingredients, but everything is carefully prepared and delicious. It feels like there are more international guests and younger guests now as well, and the quiet atmosphere is gradually being lost. There are other Accommodations in a similar price range with higher overall satisfaction in terms of Rooms, amenities, and breakfast—but I’ll continue to return for the Onsen and ambiance.

It’s a shame there’s no Onsen.
There were no pajama bottoms. The meals, as expected at Satoyama Jujo, were delicious. It was a bit inconvenient because it was very hard to get through by phone, but since everything is completely self-service, it felt very relaxing. With the No Meals Included plan, you won’t have to meet anyone.

One-of-a-kind Snow-viewing Onsen
I’d been wanting to experience this snow-viewing Onsen for a long time, and I finally had the chance to visit. Since the building is a relocated traditional farmhouse, I expected it to be somewhat cold, but thoughtful measures kept the interior warm and it was very comfortable. Before dinner, the chef’s “Minamiuonuma Nature & Ingredients Tour” included not only an introduction to the local ingredients but also detailed explanations of the architecture, which I found fascinating. The meal itself felt truly one of a kind—an expression of the chef’s passion. Maintaining the building, sourcing ingredients, prepping, clearing snow—each alone would be demanding. In an era when staffing is difficult, I felt this is a rare Accommodation run with tremendous effort while still finding ways to keep prices reasonable. The snow-viewing Onsen was outstanding, of course—but I’d love to return just to see the glossy dark pillars and beams again. And it’s wonderful that you can get here in under two hours from Tokyo Station!

First-time use
I was looking forward to my first stay, but the loungewear had an unpleasant odor and was uncomfortable. The in-Room bath was also different from the photos on the website—smaller than expected, which was disappointing. There were not enough towels, and there were only a few drinks provided in the Room. The meals were what I was most looking forward to, but they felt overly particular and were a bit disappointing; many dishes were quite salty. The snowy scenery was very beautiful.

Experience Heavy Snowfall
I chose this Accommodation to enjoy a winter-only experience during my trip. On a day of heavy snowfall when local train services were suspended, we arrived from Echigo-Yuzawa Station on the Accommodation’s shuttle bus. First, I was amazed by the pure white, silvery world and the snow piled higher than a person’s height. I had also been looking forward to this stay because the Reviews here are quite mixed. The staff member in charge of us was a foreign male, but he responded sincerely and attentively, and we had no issues. Neither dinner nor breakfast was extravagant, but the dishes made with local ingredients were moving—something you can only experience here. The two lounges were spacious compared to the number of Rooms; while the drinks were not premium, everything we needed was available and it felt more than sufficient. One drawback of the Room is that you have to access the shower room from the outside balcony, so in this season’s cold it took some determination to go take a shower. It would be better if it could be accessed directly from inside the Room. Beyond the balcony, large chunks of snow that had fallen from the roof blocked about half of our view. It made me curious what kind of scenery will open up once spring comes and the snow melts. Still, this season’s snowy landscape—and “snow flowers” clinging to bare trees—became an unforgettable memory. Next time, I’m thinking of visiting in spring to enjoy mountain vegetables. This Accommodation has high Accommodation Fees, so I can understand why guests expect value accordingly. Even so, it was an Accommodation that made me feel I would gladly return.

Accommodation in a Snow Country
I had high expectations because it is known as a Michelin-listed Accommodation. With the IKYU Diamond member benefit, early check-in at 2:00 p.m. was available, but I was told the Shuttle Service was only for the 3:00 p.m. check-in, so I had to go at my own expense. The staff also did not offer much of a welcome, which left me disappointed. The complimentary drinks, rice crackers, and ice cream were nice, but in the extreme cold there were no slippers inside the building and it felt very cold. The Room humidifier was a small tabletop type and quite noisy; I turned it off at night because it was too loud to sleep. The washbasin area was combined with the toilet and very small; I would like at least a mirror on the Room counter for guests who need one. The food, made with local ingredients, was very delicious. The freshly cooked Uonuma rice in particular was excellent. To reach the outdoor open-air bath outside, even the wooden floorboards were frozen with snow and extremely slippery. It would be better to provide anti-slip mats or take other measures for safety. Overall, I hope you will respond more from the guest’s perspective. The loungewear may be comfortable, but it is loose and thin—fine as pajamas, but disappointing as indoor wear around the property. In this season especially, providing thicker socks would be appreciated by guests as well. Also, on IKYU.com’s Room page there is an image showing a TV in the Room, while your own Accommodation description says this is an Accommodation without TVs. Please make this information consistent across listings. Thank you in advance for your attention to these points.

The Ultimate Satoyama Stay
I stayed at the accommodation at the beginning of winter when the crisp air felt refreshing. Since I don't usually visit snowy places, it was a very fresh experience! During my stay, I enjoyed a luxurious time doing nothing but relaxing with the onsen and meals. The dining experience was particularly special as I participated in a pre-meal tour that allowed me to explore food culture, making it even more enjoyable and an amazing experience. I would love to visit again in a different season! Thank you so much!!

This was my first stay at the accommodation. I was looking forward to it as it had high ratings and a Michelin 1-key recognition. The dinner and the pre-dinner tour were excellent. Learning about the pantry and its explanation made the meals taste even better. The Koshihikari rice served during dinner, especially the hand-formed rice balls, was exquisite. However, there were some disappointments: - At check-in, I mentioned that I would like red meat to be fully cooked if served, but red duck meat was presented without any comment or explanation. If it couldn't be cooked due to preparation constraints, a simple note would have been appreciated. - The water pressure in the shower at the bath area was low, and one of the showers kept running continuously with hot water leaking out. - From night until morning, there was no staff available at reception; even calling their contact number went unanswered. Calling out near reception or around their back office yielded no response either—this made me wonder what would happen in case of an emergency or sudden illness. I feel this accommodation may not be suitable for those seeking high levels of hospitality.

I just wanted to enjoy the open-air bath and dinner.
Satoyama Jujo: A place to visit with the mindset of enjoying only the open-air bath and dinner! I have visited several times with this strong determination. Dinner, as always, was very delicious. All I hoped for after that was to enjoy the open-air bath, but unfortunately, the water temperature was too low (like a heated pool), and I couldn't stay in it for more than a minute amidst heavy snowfall. The shower in the washing area also stopped producing even water at one point—what on earth happened? There was no explanation from the staff about these issues, leaving it all a mystery. This was my first visit since renovations, but I found that the concept of guest rooms and lounges lacked consistency and felt disjointed, which was disappointing. As for breakfast, it felt like sharing leftover New Year's dishes while shivering in a cold Room under tense staff supervision—it left me feeling quite sad. Even though I had lowered my expectations beforehand, they were still not met—but somehow that's part of what makes it amusing. I'll be back again!
