    Accommodation with over half a century of history

    This is my first stay since visiting with my parents and siblings over 50 years ago. The Ryokan is far more wonderful than the image I had in my memory. Including the guided tour of the facility, it was an amazing experience.

    It was an accommodation with excellent hospitality.

    We celebrated my mother's 77th birthday at Hanaya. My parents had visited before, and even my father, who usually avoids other accommodations, happily agreed to return to Hanaya. It was my first visit, and I quickly understood why they love it so much. The thoughtful touches throughout made this special occasion truly unforgettable for our family of four. We were deeply moved by the staff's hospitality over the two days. This accommodation is a registered tangible cultural property from the Taisho era, yet it is impeccably maintained despite its age. The room's private bath was exceptional, making this trip truly memorable. The meals were delicious and perfectly portioned for us; even my father, who often struggles with his appetite, finished everything on his plate. While younger guests might appreciate additional meat options, we found everything perfect and enjoyed every bite. Grateful for the opportunity to stay in such a historic building with outstanding hospitality, I am motivated to work hard this year so that I can bring my parents back again next year. Thank you very much!

    Taisho Romantic Accommodation

    It was a stroke of luck to discover Hanaya during our first visit to Bessho Onsen. Staying in the historic main building, we enjoyed delicious meals made with local ingredients in just the right portions, making it a truly satisfying trip. While libraries and pianos are occasionally found, having a cigar room is rare, and the Romeo & Juliet cigars left a nostalgic and lasting impression. Even after check-out, several staff members saw us off warmly, providing impeccable service. We would love to visit again!

    Authentic retro style!

    I heard from my sister, who stayed here before, that it was wonderful, so I decided to visit for the first time. It was an amazing ryokan beyond my expectations. I was impressed by the genuine retro atmosphere, not something artificially created. I deeply respect the effort to maintain this place over many years. The staff were cheerful and polite, creating a very pleasant atmosphere. I joined the guided tour of the facility and had a very meaningful experience. However, it was a bit disappointing that there were no shower caps or places to hang towels in the room, and the futon felt slightly firm. Other than that, both the meals and baths were excellent. I would love to visit again and recommend this accommodation to others!

    A historic and prestigious Ryokan, with room for future improvements.

    The staff are kind, polite, hardworking, and wonderful, yet friendly. This is a historic and prestigious Ryokan located in Bessho Onsen. However, while the architecture from the Taisho era is impressive, unfortunately, the room had a strong musty smell, was dimly lit, and not very comfortable. There is a lounge where you can enjoy coffee; it would be nice if it were possible to have coffee or alcohol there at night as well. Dinner was served at 6:30 PM and breakfast at 8:45 AM; I found myself hungry during the night and unable to sleep because of it. Additionally, there were no towels in the bath area so I had to bring the same towel from my room each time I went to the Onsen. There were also no cotton swabs provided in the room. Since this is such an excellent Ryokan with great potential, I believe that addressing these issues could make it even more remarkable. If there had been a questionnaire or feedback form available for guests to fill out on-site, I would have used that instead; however since none was provided during my stay, I am sharing my thoughts here for future reference.

    A friend recommended...

    A friend recommended this accommodation, and I stayed here. It’s a rare gem that combines onsen, excellent service, and delicious meals. Despite being a cultural heritage accommodation, it doesn’t feel old at all. I can only imagine the effort put into maintaining it so well. The onsen temperature is quite hot, so while a cold bath might not be feasible, it would be nice to have some drinks available in the changing room.

    The restaurant for breakfast, enveloped in the atmosphere of Taisho Romanticism, is exceptional. Its luxurious design and features such as connecting wings with a corridor reflect the richness of the Taisho era, offering a unique charm distinct from other Japanese-style Ryokan. It made my stay truly enjoyable.

    We enjoyed a nostalgic experience.

    This was our first time staying here with my wife (as a Mother’s Day treat). We were drawn to this accommodation by the photos on IKYU.com, and it turned out to be an excellent choice! The staff welcomed us warmly, leaving a lasting impression. The building, designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan, exuded charm and comfort. The beauty of traditional Japanese architecture enhanced the overall experience. The facility's maintenance and the meticulous care of the garden were impeccable and truly admirable. Check-in was quick and smooth. After being guided to our detached room, we immediately enjoyed the recommended marble bath (during men's hours). The quality of the hot spring water and its temperature were perfect—so much so that I ended up soaking longer than planned! (The indoor marble bath in our room was also wonderful; however, it was slightly disappointing that the shower water pressure was weak.) Dinner was served in our room—a rare luxury these days—and we thoroughly enjoyed an elegant meal together at a relaxed pace. The timing of service by the attendant was flawless, with detailed explanations about each dish making them even more delightful. Among all dishes, we especially loved the Shinshu beef steak—it was outstandingly juicy and delicious with just the right portion size. Breakfast took place in a large dining hall alongside other guests but featured numerous dishes with exquisite flavors—hearty yet perfectly balanced. After check-out, we had siphon coffee at their café corner; brewed from carefully selected beans using expert techniques—it too was exceptional! We highly recommend trying it during your stay. To all staff members at this accommodation: though it was just one night’s stay for us, we left feeling completely refreshed—thank you very much for such an unforgettable experience!

    I stayed for one nig...

    I stayed for one night during Golden Week. The room was upgraded, and I was very satisfied with the room itself. The quality of the onsen, the atmosphere and scenery of the ryokan, the service, and the meals were all excellent and exceeded my expectations for an onsen ryokan. Additionally, perhaps due to its location or seasonal timing, there wasn’t much tourist congestion in the surrounding area, making it perfect for a relaxing trip. I would love to visit again!

    "The preservation of cultural heritage relies on its use by guests," raising expectations for the future.

    Good Points: - The room and the accommodation were thoroughly cleaned. - Hot dishes at dinner were served piping hot. - Guests could choose their egg dish for breakfast. - The onsen was available throughout the night and until 10:30 AM in the morning. - A guided tour of cultural heritage within the accommodation was offered as an option. Disappointing Points: - Despite having a multiple night stay reservation, we were told "It's for one night, correct?" during check-in, and when we returned to the accommodation the next day, we were told "Check-in is from 3 PM" (Do they not have multiple-night guests?). - The main meat dish at dinner was exactly the same on both nights; only the cooking method differed—hot pot or shabu-shabu (My husband liked both so he didn’t mind, but I was quite surprised). - Although I informed them over a phone call that I would drink from my leftover bottle of shochu on my second night's dinner, it wasn’t prepared unless I specifically asked for it (this has never happened at other accommodations). - The sash provided in our room seemed to be an extra-long one sewn together for larger guests; when I called reception to request a regular sash instead, they curtly replied "All sashes are the same." After calling again later, they finally replaced it without any apology or understanding of my concern. - There was only one cup provided in the bathroom for brushing teeth (even family members don’t want to share this). - Upon returning from dinner, we found that our futon had been laid out in a smaller adjoining room near the entrance ("tsugi-no-ma"), which is typically meant as an auxiliary space—why weren’t they laid out in the main room? While both the building and onsen are impressive and staff uniforms are elegant, more attention should be given to improving service quality.

    Hospitality with a Smile

    Booked for a 60th birthday celebration. Upon being shown to the room, we were surprised with a specially prepared room. Completely satisfied with the beautifully decorated Japanese-style Room! The window offered a view of the garden, and we woke up to a rare snowy morning for this season. Grateful for all these blessings. The staff at the flower shop, attendants, dining area, and everyone else greeted us warmly with smiles. When passing through the hallway and asking for photos to be taken, they kindly obliged. The meals were delicious as well. The Accommodation provided comfort and peace of mind, allowing us to truly enjoy our stay. We could fully appreciate the high-quality Onsen water at Bessho Onsen too. This Accommodation embodies everything wonderful about Japanese Onsen Accommodations—truly an exceptional place called Hanaya in Bessho Onsen! Conveniently located between tourist spots like St.Cousair Winery Hill on day one and Kaikoen Park in Komoro City on day two during our strolls around town—it was indeed an outstanding Japanese Accommodation experience!

    It was my first visi...

    It was my first visit in over 10 years. The room has been renovated while preserving its traditional charm, allowing for a very comfortable stay. The staff were all very kind and cheerful, which made the experience even better. Although there are a fair number of guest rooms, the large public bath was always quiet, and I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful natural flowing Onsen multiple times. The expansive property retains the atmosphere of the Taisho era, and the garden is beautifully maintained. The meals were not overly seasoned and served in just the right portions, unlike accommodations that serve excessive amounts; everything was delicious. It would be even better if there were water stations available within the property. I also joined an IKYU special tour of the facility and had a chance to see some amazing rooms—I would love to stay in one of them next time! I sincerely hope this magnificent architecture and Onsen will be preserved for future generations. Thank you for your hospitality!

    Wonderful Onsen Accommodation

    Staying at this historic accommodation allowed me to relax and unwind away from daily life. The onsen with its mildly sulfuric yet smooth water was wonderful. The property features multiple bathing facilities, including historic tubs and open-air baths, allowing guests to fully enjoy the onsen experience. The meals, made with plenty of local ingredients, were all delicious. Next time, I would like to enjoy them in the dining hall instead of in the room. The guided tour of the facility by the staff was very interesting and I’m glad I participated.

    Thank you for your patronage.

    I was able to relax at this authentic traditional Japanese Ryokan with a rich history. The food was just right, and the indoor bath had pleasantly warm water. Next time, I would like to stay in another Room. As a suggestion, I think it would be better if the tea at breakfast could be refilled freely with a teapot. It would also be nice to have a coffee service.

    The joy of staying in a Tangible Registered Cultural Property!

    First of all, I thoroughly enjoyed the stay in the beautiful and historic architecture. The staff at the Property were all very kind and attentive, which was wonderful. The Room we stayed in for two people was more than spacious, almost too luxurious. The Onsen, which we entered briskly through the cold corridor, was very relaxing, and the atmosphere created by the steam obscuring the surroundings was delightful. The meals were plentiful, and we ate to our heart's content. The Misuzu Ame jelly included with breakfast and the Misuzu Ame sweets served with tea gave a warm sense of local pride. The books in the library were also fascinating, and I enjoyed them until the very last moment before check-out. I will definitely visit again. Thank you very much.

    The best Stays ever

    I stayed to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. The property, which features a garden reminiscent of a traditional tatami room, also has a tea room and library, making it a refined and beautiful ryokan wherever you look. I believe it is an old building, but I was surprised at how well-maintained it is, to the point where you don't feel its age in a good way. Additionally, the staff greeted us warmly whenever we passed by, making the stay comfortable. I definitely want to visit again.

    Charming Stays

    We stayed for one night with our family in a private car. At the entrance, we handed over the car keys and luggage to the staff and went inside. For check-in, we were guided to a room with a nice atmosphere, and the hostess kindly explained the property to us. We stayed in Room 83. It was nice to have an indoor onsen with free-flowing hot spring water. Dinner was served in the room, which was great as we have small children, allowing us to enjoy the meal without worrying about others. We opted for a course with Shinshu beef steak, which was very delicious. Breakfast was outside the room and was also very tasty. The taste of both meals was GOOD. The room amenities were mostly basic and sufficient. The hairdryer was made by Koizumi and worked well with no issues regarding airflow. There was a bottle of water in the refrigerator door, and beer was placed inside, so I thought the water was free, but it was charged. If it's charged, it would be better to place it in the same location, and there was no explanation. Many properties offer complimentary bottled water. At the level of this ryokan, I think it would leave a better impression if the water was complimentary. Also, there was no coffee in the room. It was a disappointing point that we couldn't have coffee after meals. On the way from the room to the onsen, we enjoyed a wonderful garden, waterwheel, and beautiful koi, making us feel that it was truly a wonderful ryokan. The onsen is, of course, a free-flowing sulfur spring. It's not a very large onsen, but the atmosphere was good, and I was personally very satisfied. As we are Diamond members of IKYU, our checkout was at 12:00. We participated in a free guided tour of the designated cultural property within the premises from 11:00, which was very satisfying as we could see historical cultural assets. About 15 minutes before checkout, there was a service where the staff carried our luggage and brought our private car to the entrance, but the luggage was not in the car, and we almost left without it. When we mentioned that the luggage was missing, the staff hurriedly brought it out. It was a slightly disappointing point. Overall, there are not many ryokans where you can stay in a cultural property, so it was a valuable experience and a very satisfying one-night stay. We would like to stay again.

    A clean and comfortable space, and the staff's service was excellent!

    I stayed for 2 nights and 3 days. The Room and bath were clean, the carefully prepared meals were delicious, and I had a pleasant time. The staff's hospitality was very warm. This time, I chose a Room with an indoor bath with natural hot spring water, and it was great to be able to take a bath anytime. I think the quality of the water is good, as my skin became smooth.

    I always have a relaxing time here.

    I love this Ryokan. In winter, I enjoy reading while relaxing in the kotatsu. I am always satisfied with the Onsen with a gentle sulfur scent and the meals. The staff are all smiling and make my stay comfortable. I will visit again.

    It must be the finest Stays.

    It is very similar to "Hyakujitsutei at the foot of Nara Mikasa Mountain," where Helen Keller and Michiko-sama once stayed. Rather than luxurious, it is "solemn." The building, being a registered tangible cultural property, exudes history and elegance. The onsen is a natural hot spring with a faint sulfur smell, offering a sense of Taisho romance and refined warmth. The meals are delicious, making the most of local produce. You can't help but savor every bite. It's truly moving. The smiles and service of the staff are top-notch. If I had to say, the breakfast start time is late at 7:45. A first-class property should start at least by 7:00. It would be greatly appreciated if a reasonable plan could be prepared so that everyone can stay.

    I was satisfied just like last time.

    It was a long-awaited visit, but overall, I was satisfied this time as well. Considering my age as a late-stage elderly person, I was grateful that they prepared a special room on the first floor (as it would be inconvenient to walk if it were far from the second floor or dining area). The cuisine was, as expected, not too much and appropriate in quantity and content for the elderly, providing satisfaction befitting a long-established inn. The only disappointment was that there were no chairs in the room. At home, I am accustomed to living with chairs and use a bed instead of a futon, so sitting directly on the tatami was difficult. It wasn't so much of an issue before, but with aging, it seems that living on Japanese tatami has become challenging without realizing it. In other regions, luxury inns always have low chairs even in tatami rooms, so it would be easier to visit if they could be included in the Japanese-style rooms. While it is important to preserve tradition, I think it is also essential to change with the times. The bath is also slippery, so wouldn't handrails be necessary? The young female staff members all seemed pleasant and well-trained. Overall, it became a pleasant travel memory.

    Surrounded by the brocade of late autumn, I stayed at a Taisho romantic Stays.

    I was very satisfied with the Room in the main building, which had a nostalgic and warm atmosphere, with maze-like corridors on the vast premises, a dignified bath, and splendidly crafted furnishings, decorations, and furniture. Fortunately, I was able to enjoy the garden with its complex layout just in time for the autumn leaves. The young maid's hakama and waitress apron were also cute. The lack of excessive amenities is refreshing (no lotion, emulsion, or facial cleanser). The service is unpretentious (no tea service), but the futon laid out for me was very comfortable, and the bath was refreshing (only bottled shampoo, conditioner, and body shampoo, with just a wooden tub and chair), and it felt clean. I thought it was nice to keep it this simple and focus on relaxation. I admire the attitude of carefully repairing and cherishing the old building. The well-maintained furniture also shows a sense of care, which makes me happy. I would definitely like to join the guided tour of the building next time.

    Great satisfaction

    The meals, service, and Onsen were all excellent. Everything was perfect except for the lack of lotion and emulsion amenities in the bath area. The quality at this price was superb. I cut my finger and was provided with a band-aid, and the service was great. Since checkout was at 11 AM, I was able to enjoy a morning bath as well.
