    Connecting Corridor and Garden

I stayed one night in the Main Building 8-tatami + 6-tatami Room. The charming covered corridor and the surrounding gardens were wonderful. I imagine it offers a different atmosphere with each season. Various hanging lanterns are lit along the corridor, making it even more atmospheric in the morning and evening. The lighting in the lobby, library, and Room was also enjoyable in its own way. Each of the three large public baths had a distinct character—the marble bath with stained glass, and the open-air bath with greenery all around. One downside is that, due to the Onsen minerals, the floors can be slippery. As this is an Onsen Ryokan, it was relaxing to spend time inside wearing yukata. All staff were kind and had lovely smiles. It was also fun to see that outfits differed depending on who assisted us—and sometimes even between morning and evening for the same person. Because of the building layout—Rooms connected like separate annexes via covered corridors—some areas inevitably feel almost outdoors. If you dislike insects or mosquitoes, you may want to take precautions. The meals were not overly elaborate, but seafood and other dishes were prepared deliciously, and I was satisfied with the carefully selected tableware as well. For the price, this Accommodation offers a truly luxurious escape from everyday life—I highly recommend it.

Everything was great, but I was left feeling disappointed.

I visited looking forward to enjoying this Taisho-Romantic Accommodation, but as soon as I returned to my Room after using the Onsen, it was pitch-dark. When I called, a manager came with his business card and a single simple lantern and said it was only this Room and that the breaker panel had failed. At first I thought, “Maybe it’s okay not having the TV on while listening to the rain,” but it gradually got cold, and since we didn’t know when it would be fixed, we got chilled after the bath. We went back into the Onsen again, but even after returning it still wasn’t restored. It had been raining for about two hours, so we were left in a completely dark Room due to the power outage. Is it unavoidable because it’s a registered tangible cultural property Room? It was so dim that it actually felt scary. After that there was no apology at all. The same manager boasted at the shop that they were relatives of Iijima Shoten (Misuzu Ame), then at dinner recommended an extra dish (Korean ginseng tempura) and alcohol. At checkout he recommended siphon-brewed coffee; we ordered it, but shouldn’t you at least offer coffee as a courtesy? Even some sweets like Misuzu Ame from your relatives would have been fine. It’s inexpensive—it’s about consideration and basic manners, isn’t it? I was shocked by how poor the response was. We didn’t complain and handled things like adults, but those were two precious hours of our evening, and we were left feeling unsettled. This is where a Ryokan’s class shows. The food was very delicious, the Onsen was great, and even the limited amenities didn’t bother us—we were enjoying this Taisho-Romantic Accommodation—but while a power outage due to breaker failure may be unavoidable, I honestly felt disappointed by how poorly you handled an incident like this.

    I chose this Accommo...

I chose this Accommodation because I wanted to stay at a place with a great Onsen. The water felt wonderful, and after the 11:00 in-house tour, my husband went back into the in-Room Onsen even though checkout was only 20 minutes away (it was 12:00 with the Diamond member benefit) (laugh). Both the Rooms we toured and the Room we stayed in had beautifully crafted tokonoma pillars, along with lovely ceilings and stained glass—there were so many wonderful details that we really enjoyed. That said, although there was a Nespresso machine in the dining Room, there were no coffee cups. So I ended up drinking from a teacup, and later found cups inside a cabinet in another Room. They were placed at an awkward distance where it wasn’t clear whether they were decorative or meant to be used. Also, even though the Room amenities included a mini cosmetics set, there were no cotton swabs. The roasted green tea served after dinner was weak and full of tea leaves (you have to wait for them to settle after pouring hot water...), and there was far too much simmered tuna at breakfast. Compared with other Accommodations around the same price range, these points made me wonder “hmm?” and they stood out to me.

Whether you can appreciate this value.

I get the impression that the appeal of Ryokan Hanaya really resonates only with certain age groups and people with a fairly high level of appreciation for such things. To put it realistically, it feels like an excellent Accommodation for “healthy middle-aged to older guests with no concerns about their legs,” and for those who can truly appreciate the patina of the furnishings—the architecture, fine craftsmanship, and the passage of time—and be quietly moved by it. I’ve also seen comments saying it isn’t very child-friendly; if that’s what you’re looking for, you should choose a different Ryokan. The setting here is special, and there’s an aspect to this Ryokan where it would be a shame if you’re not at an age to understand and enjoy it. Because of the hot spring water quality as well as the design and materials used in the baths, some areas are very slippery, which makes it a bit challenging for children or families with kids. It may also be tough for guests in advanced old age… Depending on your Room, there may be quite a lot of stairs. And when approaching the open-air bath—and in the open-air bath itself—on top of how slippery it can be as mentioned above, if you tense your feet to avoid slipping, some parts of the stone floor in the rock bath are slightly sharp; stepping on those spots can hurt your soles. You really need to stay alert at all times (laugh). Regarding meals: Dinner → Not exactly “good,” but not terrible either. At least, it wasn’t memorable. One thing I will mention is the soup: I found myself wondering why I could barely taste any dashi flavor at all. Breakfast → I enjoyed a very delicious breakfast in a pleasant dining room atmosphere. It’s nice that you can choose your egg dish; a family at the next table was exclaiming how good their rolled omelet was!! Personally, I don’t need chunks of tuna at breakfast. All staff members were polite and pleasant. The attendant assigned to our Room handled everything properly—from serving meals (in-room dining) to laying out futons—but since they were working alone, we couldn’t help feeling how demanding that must have been. Amenities are refreshingly minimalistic. For someone like me who prefers bringing my own makeup remover, toner, and emulsion that suit my skin, this was sufficient. (Shampoo and other bath products are provided by Mikimoto Cosmetics.) We stayed as a family this time; caring for my husband who has trouble walking left me exhausted, so if there is a next time I’d ideally like to come alone for some quiet relaxation (laugh). However, there doesn’t seem to be any solo travel Plan available here, so that may be difficult—which is a bit disappointing.

It was a very nice Ryokan.

A historic Japanese Ryokan. The interior and each Room are connected by covered corridors, and the Japanese garden and koi pond were beautiful. However, it’s easy to get lost when returning to your Room—though that was part of the fun. The meals were delicious, but seafood might be better if it’s river fish. The premium beef sukiyaki was especially excellent. The Onsen had abundant hot water and was spacious, with traces of the old mixed-bathing style still remaining. The water was wonderful. The in-house tour is great and very interesting. We even came across a wild raccoon dog sunbathing in the garden—lucky us. A calm, truly wonderful Accommodation. Our family loves this kind of Ryokan. If possible, we would like two towels and two yukata per person.

    Revisit

This was my third visit. The charming architecture, the free-flowing Onsen, and the warm hospitality of the staff were all wonderful. The only slight disappointment was that there were no amenities or drinking water in the bath area. Since there are various Rooms, I would like to stay in a nicer Room someday. I hope you will preserve this beautiful architecture for future generations. Thank you very much for taking such good care of me.

    I was looking forwar...

I was looking forward to staying in a designated Tangible Cultural Property, and it met my expectations. It was a very charming Ryokan and became a wonderful memory. Both the in-Room Onsen and the shared Onsen had excellent water quality, and I was very satisfied. The meals were also carefully prepared and delicious. However, perhaps because the Room heating is old, it took quite a long time to warm up. Also, whether by design to keep furnishings minimal or not, there were few amenities and towels, and only one trash bin in a spacious Room of over 100 square meters, which felt inconvenient. I felt there might be some concerns about staying here in midsummer or midwinter. That said, what cannot be captured by a score—the history and atmosphere, as well as the staff’s attire and presence—made the overall experience truly special, and I would definitely like to stay again.

    What is Taisho Romanticism?

As a registered Tangible Cultural Property, this Ryokan offered an atmosphere you can rarely experience elsewhere. On the other hand, there were many inconveniences, and if comfort is one of your main criteria for an Accommodation, it may feel quite lacking in several respects—so it’s probably a matter of personal preference. Even allowing for the limitations of the Facility itself, my stay left me somewhat dissatisfied in terms of the hospitality you would normally expect from a Ryokan. There are three types of baths and the Room also has an open-air bath, but despite wanting to fully enjoy the Onsen, we were expected to reuse a single towel provided in the Room. There was no towel warmer, and because of how the Room is built the heating was not very effective and towels did not dry properly; overall (there are too many details to list), I felt that the food and service did not match the concept of this repeatedly renovated Ryokan, leaving me with an unsatisfying impression. If you view it as an opportunity to enjoy staying in a traditional wooden Ryokan that is a registered Tangible Cultural Property, it can be an interesting experience. However, there are many stairs and most passageways outside the Room are open to the elements, so it may be best to avoid winter for those who struggle with stairs—and summer due to insects. That said, the large marble public bath was spacious and had a wonderful atmosphere.

    Bessho Onsen is Hanaya.

I have stayed at other accommodations, but Hanaya is my favorite. This time, I stayed in Room 15 on the first floor of the main building, which was very convenient as it was close to the bath. If it's a cold season next time, I might choose Room 14 instead... The menu did not mention the head chef; is there a replacement?

    Excellent hot springs

The Room and the entire Ryokan were very clean, and the hot spring was excellent. Since it was drinkable hot spring water, I drank a lot and felt rejuvenated from the inside out. All the staff were very pleasant, making it an enjoyable trip. Thank you very much!

    The Onsen water was ...

The Onsen water was gentle and soft, with no noticeable sulfur smell, allowing for a long and satisfying soak. The cuisine was excellent in both ingredients and taste, providing great satisfaction as well. However, there was a piano performance in the hall during check-in, which was too loud and unpleasant. The music during meals had the same issue.

    Not child-friendly

There were no towels or yukata provided for children. While we gave up on the yukata, another staff member informed us that they could be provided for an additional fee. Eventually, we received children's yukata and towels, but it left us wondering about the meaning of the pre-charged infant fee included in the accommodation fee. Despite visiting this onsen ryokan to relax, inconsistent responses from staff and concerns over basic amenities like towels made it hard to feel like a luxury ryokan worth over 100,000 yen per night. The hygiene standards were also disappointing.

My favorite place. I want to visit again.

A relaxing trip to Bessho Onsen with my wife. I have stayed here before. "Hanaya" is my favorite Onsen Ryokan among all the accommodations I have experienced so far. The atmosphere is charming, and the staff's hospitality was excellent. The meals were delicious, both in quality and quantity. Both the open-air bath and indoor bath remain as wonderful as before, allowing for a truly relaxing experience. It was such a pleasant stay. I would love to visit again. Only about an hour and a half from Tokyo, this is an accommodation I would recommend to friends as well.

Considering the safety and peace of mind of our guests.

We celebrated my 90-year-old mother's birthday with a family stay. Before our visit, I informed the Ryokan about having an elderly guest after learning our room was on the second floor, but their response was simply that we would need to use the stairs. Upon arrival, we found the stairs to be quite steep, and the staff member guiding us went ahead without showing concern for how an elderly person might manage them. The repeated trips up and down these steep stairs during our stay made us anxious, so we raised this issue again. However, their explanation remained that they had informed us via email about being on the second floor—implying it was something we should have accepted. The dining area required descending one set of stairs and ascending another, which added to our disappointment as there seemed to be no consideration for accessibility beyond just assigning a room on the second floor. It felt like they underestimated what "90-year-old" truly means in terms of mobility needs. While preserving a retro atmosphere is understandable, safety and comfort for guests should come first. Concerns about emergencies like fires left me unable to sleep peacefully. Although dinner was eventually arranged in a private room on the first floor instead of upstairs as initially planned, their comment that "we spoke with other guests" made it seem like an unreasonable favor granted at others' expense—leaving me feeling guilty. The Onsen itself lacked proper safety measures despite warnings posted about slippery surfaces; there were no handrails at steps leading into baths or entrances with uneven levels—a concern even for myself as someone younger than my mother. Given that many Onsen visitors are likely older adults too, this oversight heightened my worries further. Additionally disappointing were outdated facilities such as non-lockable baskets in changing rooms or missing amenities like water stations post-bath—features standard in modern Hotels today but absent here. In-room issues included insufficient hot water from taps at sinks or inconvenient placements between kettles & power outlets—all contributing factors making this experience feel far below its price point's value compared against numerous other Hotels/Ryokans we've stayed before where only meals stood out positively amidst otherwise low ratings overall here sadly leaving little desire returning future stays again unfortunately

I wish I had come earlier.

The building, meals, and onsen were all exceptional. The craftsmanship and intricate details of the room were indescribably beautiful. Even as a layperson, I could sense that it was created by master carpenters. The bath was also wonderful. If I had one suggestion, it would be to inform guests about events like the North-Facing Kannon opening beforehand. I only found out when I went to visit and encountered a long line; knowing at the time of reservation or upon arrival might have allowed me to plan better and visit early in the morning. Additionally, we were a week too early for the Ueda Castle Autumn Festival due to my lack of research. Nonetheless, it became an unforgettable memory for us. Thank you very much!

    Enjoy Autumn in Shinshu

Located within walking distance of Kitamuki Kannon and Anrakuji Temple, the location is excellent. Despite arriving early, we were grateful to have our car and luggage promptly taken care of. The traditional historic building and the autumn foliage in the garden added a charming atmosphere. We enjoyed a delightful meal featuring seasonal ingredients from Shinshu, including matsutake mushrooms, and had a relaxing time soaking in the Onsen. Thank you very much!

    Excellent hospitality.

The Room was upgraded. The garden view from the Room was excellent, and the private hot spring bath with natural flowing water was amazing. Although the building has a long history, it is well-maintained, allowing for a comfortable stay. We chose the Matsutake Plan for our meals and fully enjoyed matsutake mushrooms along with delicious sashimi and Shinshu beef paired with local sake. Above all, the staff were courteous and attentive, showcasing true hospitality that made our trip with friends even more enjoyable. I would love to visit again with my family during another season.

Enjoy an Accommodation Registered as a Tangible Cultural Property

A wonderful accommodation preserving the tradition and charm of a Taisho-era building. Spending time in such a historic structure felt extraordinary and delightful. The hospitality and service were impeccable, leaving us completely satisfied. The retro maid uniforms worn by the female staff were also very charming. The siphon coffee we enjoyed at the café before leaving was absolutely delicious. We would love to visit again. Thank you very much!

As expected of a historic building, it has a charming atmosphere. The entrance, hallways, room, bath area, dining room... wherever you are, it feels great. It was disappointing that there was no tissue paper in the room and no hair styling products in the bath area. Dinner was made with excellent ingredients and prepared with care, making it very delicious. Each dish, from the appetizers to sashimi and grilled items, was served individually, with warm dishes served warm and cold dishes served cold. I imagine it must have been a lot of effort for the staff. Breakfast was also delightful, with freshly harvested rice, Onsen eggs, and miso soup. The bath had excellent water quality, with a spacious stone-built tub that was very relaxing to use. It would be nice to have handrails in the tub to prevent falls. The staff at the reception and dining areas were very attentive, making for a pleasant stay.

    I discovered this Ry...

I discovered this Ryokan through a TV program and stayed for the first time. The Facility has a wonderful historical design, truly worthy of being an important cultural property. However, due to its structure, there were many vertical movements and it felt like a maze, making it somewhat inconvenient in terms of functionality, including the Room. While I had no major complaints about the service, there were several instances where I was kept waiting for quite some time—possibly due to staff shortages—which led me to rate this aspect lower. Additionally, the lack of capsule coffee refills and no towels provided in the public bath (with no spare bath towels in the Room) are negative points for a Ryokan in this price range. I had no issues with the meals; however, apart from the grilled matsutake mushrooms I ordered as an extra dish, nothing stood out as particularly delicious or memorable. This might simply be due to personal preferences regarding Shinshu-style seasoning. The Onsen quality was excellent. The open-air mosaic-tiled bath in my Room was beautiful, well-sized, and very enjoyable to use. The public bath was also historically impressive but since I was satisfied with my Room's bath, I only used it once during my stay. Overall, while there were no major complaints about my experience here, considering its price range and status as a high-class Ryokan, I felt that certain aspects could have been better improved. That said, all staff members greeted me warmly with smiles and provided pleasant service throughout my stay—thank you very much!

    Registered Cultural Property Accommodation

The accommodation, being a registered cultural property, was truly wonderful. For those who love accommodations with character, it was irresistible. The lighting and transoms were intricately designed, and I ended up taking many photos. The fresh flowers displayed throughout the facility were also a nice touch. The garden pond filled with koi fish was beautiful as well. Thank you for upgrading us to a better room than the one we reserved. Although some doors and sliding screens showed signs of age and didn’t close perfectly, everything felt well-cleaned and maintained. The onsen water was, of course, sourced directly from the spring without recycling—perfect for an onsen enthusiast like me. It had a faint sulfur scent and offered smooth alkaline water that left my skin feeling silky. For meals, I opted for the matsutake mushroom course since I had been craving them this time around. The aroma of the matsutake mushrooms was incredible—even in tempura form—and left me deeply impressed. Paired with unfiltered raw sake served alongside delicious grilled matsutake mushrooms, it became one of my personal favorites. As for requests: at an accommodation of this caliber, I would have appreciated having at least two bath towels and yukata per person in the room. Both our private bath and public baths were so delightful that we bathed multiple times; however, our single towel became damp quickly as did our yukata after use or sleeping in them overnight. While one towel replacement was provided during our stay, it wasn’t enough for everyone in our group; additionally changing into fresh yukata before bed or in the morning would have been ideal. Regarding breakfast service: placing tea pots or rice containers directly on each table would be more convenient than waiting when requesting refills—it took longer than expected which disrupted meal timing slightly (e.g., wanting more tea while enjoying dessert jelly). Because asking seemed inconvenient due to delays involved—I refrained altogether despite wanting seconds! Overall though—I thoroughly enjoyed my stay! I'd love returning during another season especially when azaleas bloom beautifully across your gardens again someday soon! Thank you very much!

    Historic Ryokan

The bath, architecture, and service were excellent. However, the overall atmosphere felt a bit dark. Mosquito measures are necessary. Being a historic building, some aspects are understandable, but the curtains especially feel dated. There were areas in the hallway and restroom where an old smell was noticeable. The food was reasonably delicious.

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

Stayed for 2 nights. I was amazed at how well-maintained this old building is. It felt as clean and charming as a theme park! The meals were very carefully prepared, delicious, and absolutely wonderful. The dining area had a lovely atmosphere too! The staff uniforms were different in the morning and evening, which was adorable. Since I made the reservation without much thought, the room didn’t have a shower. Personally, I don’t usually use one so it wasn’t an issue for me, but my family member who sweats easily seemed to find it inconvenient. The onsen was exceptional as expected. As others have mentioned, there are only hair dryers in the changing area with no other amenities provided. While it might feel slightly inconvenient to some, it allowed us to step away from our cluttered daily lives and enjoy a relaxing time. Although it's close to the station, not having shuttle service could be tough during bad weather or when carrying heavy luggage—so I deducted one point for that—but overall this accommodation was perfect. I’d love to visit again with my elderly parents next time and book a room with an indoor bath!

The meal quality and service were disappointing.

I love the Onsen and the atmosphere of the accommodation. Although the amenities are a bit disappointing, considering there is an Onsen in the room, it offers great value for money and I am satisfied every time. This was my fifth stay. For the first time, I had dinner in the dining hall. It was my second time having a meal of this grade. The soup was too hot, strong winds fanned the flame of solid fuel making it hard for the pot to boil... The most disappointing part was being served cold grilled ayu fish with no warmth left, placed upside down on the plate. Some staff members' tone and expressions raised questions as well. There were many instances where service felt careless or unrefined—something that has never happened before. That said, most of the staff provide wonderful service. I still love both the Onsen and ambiance of this accommodation. However, this time my impression during mealtime was extremely poor.

The Onsen, facilities, and meals were excellent and very satisfying. However, after 7:30 PM following dinner, a loud voice of a female staff member hysterically scolding another employee could be heard from the back of the front desk on the first floor. As I was about to enter the marble bath area, it was extremely unpleasant. It felt more like uncontrolled emotional outbursts rather than proper reprimanding, and it was puzzling that no one intervened. I would recommend anger management training for the person being scolded. It feels like such a waste for an establishment with such tradition and pride to have this kind of issue.
