We expect courteous and hospitable service from the front desk staff.

It was my first stay in about three years, and this time I stayed in a different Room than before. The in-room bath was smaller than last time, but I really liked the atmosphere of the Room, the view, and the private baths. I was also happy to see again the staff member who serves meals and chats with guests at dinner, and I had a wonderful time. I would appreciate improvements in how the front desk handles the following: Regarding transportation to the station: during my previous stay, I didn’t know there was a drop-off service. At checkout, a front desk staff member asked, “Would you like us to take you to the station?” When I declined because we planned to sightsee, they kindly said, “It’s on our way, so we can drop you off partway.” This time, when I asked before checkout, I was told it wasn’t possible unless requested at check-in. They also said I should check the website in advance. When I replied that most people don’t thoroughly read a website beforehand and asked if that was true, they answered “Yes.” The shallow response and lack of hospitality from what seemed to be an experienced front desk staff member left me speechless. If they had confirmed at check-in whether we needed transportation to the station, there would have been no issue. They did ask whether we came by car; however, once we said we did not come by car, it should have been easy to assume we were using public transportation—yet there was no follow-up. Rather than a mechanical response, I hope they will show consideration for guests who are not arriving by car and provide more hospitable service. I felt truly disappointed.

    A bit disappointing.

We were very satisfied with the service, meals, and the Room. We stayed in a suite Room with a private open-air bath for guests, and it also had a lovely shower room, but the open-air bath was not something we felt like using. It was disappointing.

    As a travel-loving c...

As a travel-loving couple, we’ve recently been taking trips where we stay at a Hotel and eat at local restaurants, so this was our first Ryokan stay in a while. We were completely satisfied with everything—the Room, the bath, and the food—and were able to relax and take our time. The Room was honestly too spacious for just two of us, but every space—the Japanese-style room, Western-style room, and bedroom—had its own charm and was wonderful. The bed was also extremely comfortable, and we slept soundly. We also enjoyed the Bluetooth speaker in the Western-style room; it had great sound quality and created an atmosphere that felt like being in a bar. The open-air bath in the Room had continuously flowing natural hot spring water, so we could soak right away after arriving and truly unwind. Dinner featured locally produced Aizu cuisine, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The recommended sake was delicious as well, and it was nice to be able to ask casually for suggestions while choosing. The pricing also felt very reasonable overall. If I had to mention one thing, breakfast was slightly disappointing: refills of rice or tea had to be requested via the in-room phone, and they took quite a while to arrive—so it would have been better if tea had been left in a pot. We were happy with the service too, and would love to visit again if we have the chance.

    I was reasonably satisfied.

Based on the name “Hanare” and the photos online, I had assumed it would be a small Accommodation. I also imagined that “Hanare” would offer not only Rooms but also an auberge-style dining experience. As a large Hotel, it was a good Hotel. It would have been nicer if the dining area had a brighter atmosphere.

We wanted the annex to feel more luxurious.

The Room overlooking the mountain stream had a wonderful view and was excellent, but the sound of running water was unavoidable and may disturb sleep, so I would like to see soundproof glass installed. It would have been even better if, at least for the “Hanare” annex rooms, guest traffic flow did not overlap with other Rooms. As for the meals, it may simply not have suited my taste, but due to staff shortages most dishes required guests to light the burner at the table and cook them themselves. It was disappointing that this Accommodation did not feel very hospitable. There were also several small but noticeable issues: unattended scratches in the corners of pillars, rust around the washbasin faucet area, peeling wallpaper, and curled-up carpeting used to cover level differences on top of the hallway carpet.

Service that does not meet the standards of a first-class Ryokan

It feels like a slightly upgraded room in a traditional Ryokan. Dinner was overly sweet overall, with three dishes cooked on fuel stoves—please don't make guests cook their own meals! No call bell in the dining area, no towels set in the Room, and even bottled water in the Room is charged separately—quite strict. As others have mentioned, there were various small issues here and there. The bath had a rustic charm and was enjoyable.

    Very satisfied.

I have traveled several times to accommodations with open-air baths in the room. Although I didn't expect much as I was hoping for an open-air bath at a price similar to a standard room due to budget constraints, it exceeded my expectations. The room was very lovely, the private dining for breakfast and dinner was delicious, the staff were incredibly pleasant, and true to Shosuke's accommodation style, there were various alcohol services that made me very satisfied. I want to visit again; this is the best accommodation I've ever stayed at!

    As time goes by

I stayed at this accommodation about seven years ago and had a great experience, but it was difficult to make a reservation since then. Finally, I managed to book it again with high expectations, but I was shocked. The quality of the food has significantly declined, the room was dirty, and the bedding was worn out—truly disappointing.

I had a relaxing and enjoyable time.

This was our second stay this year, and we chose a course with lighter meal portions this time. We thoroughly enjoyed the thoughtfully prepared dishes every day. From arrival to departure, the warm service from the staff made our stay very pleasant. The explanations of the meal menu were clear, allowing us to fully savor the local ingredients. The assistance with parking was also much appreciated. During these hot days, the outdoor bath in the large public bath area was crowded while the indoor bath remained quiet, but we never had to wait and could enjoy it comfortably. Surrounded by greenery, we thought it would be wonderful to visit again during autumn foliage season.

Please pay a little more attention to the details.

The private bath is lukewarm. The ceiling of the shower room is covered in mold. At night, light from the neighboring Room seeps in, making it hard to get dark. Empty cans were found on the balcony.

The meals are delicious, especially the rice, which is exceptional.

The rice used is premium-grade Aizu Koshihikari, and it tastes absolutely delicious. If you're staying for the food, this is an excellent accommodation. Room Stayed: Hikari-no-Ma Below are the pros and cons: ■ Pros - The large public bath is spacious, with semi-separated washing areas to minimize splashing. - An abundance of complimentary drinks: At the post-bath area - beer, soft serve ice cream, barley tea. Near the front desk - matcha (with yokan), coffee, tea, various juices. A small coin allows you to sample sake. In-room amenities include yogurt liqueur and natural water. - The meals are incredibly delicious; dinner featured a generous amount of meat dishes. The highlight was enjoying dobin-mushi in summer! As mentioned earlier, the white rice was so good I had seconds! - Plenty of towels provided in the room for convenience. - For guests staying in detached rooms (hanare), there’s a covered parking area nearby (likely limited to four cars on a first-come basis). - All facilities are clean and well-maintained overall. - Stunning views of a beautiful gorge right outside. - Surprisingly close to town. - All staff members provide warm and attentive service. ■ Cons - The open-air bath in Hikari-no-Ma is too small; slightly more width would make it perfect. - Upon arrival, there was no water filled in the room's open-air bath. - Shower fixtures in the room were covered with limescale buildup. - Parts of the sink area in the toilet were loose or wobbly; considering it's supposed to be a high-end detached room, such issues should be fixed promptly as they detract from its luxury feel. - Dinner meat tends to burn easily; while guests cook it themselves at their table, some guidance or warning about this would help prevent wasting such high-quality meat due to overcooking or burning. - Only one staff member seemed assigned during breakfast service? They appeared very busy which made placing orders awkward—having at least two staff members would ensure smoother operations even on busier days.

    Great Accommodation

Thank you for hosting us on our long-awaited Onsen trip. We stayed in a room on the top floor, enjoyed the beautiful view, and had a relaxing time. Both the private open-air bath and the scenic open-air bath were excellent, and we were very satisfied with the meals. The room was also a comfortable space that felt pleasantly like home, which was wonderful. We would love to stay here again!

    Warm hospitality

I truly appreciate the warm hospitality of all the staff I encountered from check-in to check-out. In particular, I am very grateful to the staff who served dinner and breakfast for their friendly and thoughtful care towards my elderly mother. The souvenir shop was well-stocked and enjoyable. The only concern was the numerous small steps throughout the facility, including guest rooms and the large public bath. However, considering its riverside location, this might be unavoidable. Adding handrails to areas like the few steps leading down to the dining area on the third floor could provide more reassurance for elderly guests.

    Snowy Onsen

I stayed for 2 nights and 3 days this time. Although I had some concerns based on reviews, I safely arrived at the accommodation through the snow. From check-in to check-out, I received various greetings and services that made me feel special and satisfied. I was surprised by the variety of dishes during meals, and I enjoyed a relaxing time in the onsen. I would like to visit again during a warmer season next time.

    RUGGLES

    Severely understaffed

Despite being informed of the taxi arrival via intercom, the front desk required a name after a delay of three beats. My first impression was that this would be a disappointing weekend. Upon being shown to the room, explanations were rushed and incomprehensible. The bath had instructions in small print stating that temperature adjustment was difficult and should be done manually, but with both hot water and cold water taps available, it was unclear what made it challenging. The shower drainage was extremely poor, leaving the floor flooded like a pond. Meals using banquet-style pots were warm but could easily be prepared at home; similarly, grilled meat can be enjoyed elsewhere. Even when trying to order alcohol, staff shortages meant no response even after calling three times. When pointing out issues with the shower during checkout, responses were inaudible or dismissive murmurs. At over 50,000 yen per person per night including tax, this accommodation is an overpriced disappointment I will never visit again!

    The shower is challenging!

I stayed during the November holiday. The accommodation itself was good, but the shower was out of order and unusable. I contacted the front desk, but it could not be repaired. This holiday was an important anniversary for my spouse and me, so it was very disappointing. The meals did not feel particularly special either. We realized we had set our expectations too high and decided to let it go. Next time, we will look for a different hotel. Thank you very much.

    Highly Satisfying Service

I stayed in the annex. I was delighted with the special touches such as the welcome drink, sake service, and mochi. The hospitality was exceptional, providing a heartwarming experience. I also enjoyed reading Mr. Shozuke Obara's book while soaking my feet in the footbath. The meal menu was delightful and never boring, even during a multiple night stay. It was an accommodation that made me want to return and never leave. I will definitely come back again!
