    Taisho Romantic Style

    This was my first time learning about and visiting Mine Onsen! From the hot spring source next to the entrance, to the garden and the charming lobby, I was soothed by a sense of old-world romance from the moment we arrived. Dinner, its pairing with alcohol, and even the evening bar were all elegant and full of atmosphere. The birthday plate we requested was also wonderful. Dessert on the terrace after breakfast made for a lovely time. I’d love to visit again in a different season! The staff’s hospitality was excellent.

    An almost perfect Accommodation

    We had the pleasure of visiting Gyokuhokan at its 100th anniversary milestone. As many Reviews say, it is an Accommodation where “the food is excellent, the atmosphere is wonderful, and the Onsen and hospitality are outstanding,” and my spouse and I truly enjoyed our stay. We were especially impressed by how comfortably we could relax in the private bath with plenty of time to spare (we heard it first sprang forth on November 22, 100 years ago...). The dinner ingredients and tableware also felt like items chosen with care that conveyed the head chef’s passion. If we may offer one comment, we felt that if we could more directly sense a uniquely Minami-Izu “local character,” or the staff’s personal attachment to “this Ryokan,” it would become an even more welcoming luxury Ryokan. We would love to visit again if we have the chance. Thank you very much.

    Wisteria Maiden

    It was a memorable Ryokan I visited several times when I was younger. It still felt familiar and nostalgic; the square pool is gone, but the meals were delicious, and the Onsen was wonderfully rejuvenating. I’d love to visit again.

    I felt that it’s rare to find such a wonderful Ryokan.

    Founded in the Taisho era, this Ryokan features a powerful Onsen spring on the grounds that bubbles up vigorously—truly impressive. The refined, understated atmosphere, the unmistakable sense of quality and elegance, and the wonderful Room were all exceptional. The staff were outstanding as well, always attentive and thinking ahead in every detail. The cuisine was like works of art, and tasted just as remarkable. From start to finish, everything was simply superb. Thank you for the wonderful memories and for all your thoughtful hospitality.

    This was my first st...

    This was my first stay at this Accommodation, and the moment I saw the charming atmosphere and spacious garden, I thought, “Choosing this Accommodation was the right decision!” I was also amazed by the natural Onsen springing up beside the entrance. The open-air bath in my Room, with free-flowing hot spring water direct from the source, was generously sized—I enjoyed it many times and felt completely refreshed. The meals were also delicious. I could really feel how sincerely the younger staff members worked, which made for a warm and pleasant experience. I’d love to visit again when the Kawazu cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Thank you very much for your hospitality.

    Thank you for your thoughtfulness toward my left-handed husband despite how busy you were. It was a small thing, but it made him very happy. When it’s just the two of us, we love the Taisho Roman Room. This time, while drinking a canned beer by the window in our Room, I was truly impressed by how beautifully clean the window glass was. Even though this is an old building that has been renovated, it is kept in such excellent condition—I think it’s wonderful. We loved the ceramic bath in the private bath before, but during this stay we came to love the retro Yuunagi bath even more. We will definitely stay again. Thank you very much.

    Wonderful Accommodation

    This was our second stay. Just like last time, we enjoyed wonderful hospitality and were very satisfied with our visit. In particular, the staff member who assisted us during meals left a great impression, and our whole family was able to spend meaningful time together (a very experienced-looking person). We were also happy that the thoughtful touches—such as the tea snacks in the Room, one complimentary drink at the bar, and late-night snack service—were still available. The only downside was that some parts of the Room showed signs of wear and tear. We would love to return again if we have the chance. Thank you very much for taking care of us this time.

    We highly recommend the cuisine and hospitality.

    I made a Reservation for my birthday. I kept my budget tight, so I arrived without high expectations, but the hospitality more than made up for the Facility’s age, and I completely fell in love with the wonderful meals. The pacing of service was perfect, and even though I usually drink too much, I ended up with just one extra glass on top of the pairing (haha). Breakfast was also delicious—I even had a second serving of rice. If you schedule the private baths well, you should be able to enjoy them all, but I was a bit absent-minded and didn’t manage to try every one—something to look forward to next time. The food was truly outstanding, and I already want to come back just to eat again. The garden is beautiful as well, and you can relax in your Room—highly recommended.

    Izu Trip for Couples

    We stayed for one night as a couple while sightseeing in Shimoda. Our Room had a private bath, and we were impressed by how spacious it was. The entire Accommodation was spotless and felt clean throughout, making our stay very comfortable. The food was wonderful both in presentation and taste, and we would love to return in a different season. Thank you very much.

    Absolutely the best!!

    This was my first visit in five years. I had made a Reservation several times, but due to my husband’s schedule or illness, we unfortunately had to Cancel the Reservation, so I was really looking forward to coming back after so long. We stayed in the same detached Room as last time. It was quiet and private, and I was able to relax and soak in the in-room bath at my leisure—absolutely satisfying. Of course, the meals were also incredibly delicious. Not only the taste, but the presentation was delicate and wonderful! I can’t put it into words any better than that. Every member of staff provided attentive service, and I could truly feel their hospitality—it was very comfortable. Just one thing… The only downside is that it’s so popular that it’s hard to get a Reservation. But even understated, it’s simply the best!! Next time, I’d like to indulge in a Multiple Night Stay. I’ll do my best to secure a Reservation for a Multiple Night Stay!

    First Stay

    I’m glad I chose Gyokuhachikan after considering so many Accommodations. What convinced me was not overly luxurious meals, but food that felt carefully prepared and served in just the right portions. I also appreciated how the building preserves the charm of the Taisho era while incorporating modern Facilities. The meals were truly delicious—I was satisfied with the ingredients, seasoning, and presentation. The garden could be seen from the Room, making it a wonderful place to relax and unwind. It has become one of the Accommodations I’d like to visit again in a different season.

    The detached guest room with a private open-air bath is exceptional.

    Although the Kawazu cherry blossoms had already fallen, the free-flowing natural hot spring Onsen was outstanding. The breakfast and dinner exceeded our expectations and were delicious. The Room was new, and we were glad we chose a detached annex with a private open-air bath that we could use anytime.

    The meals are outstanding.

    This was my first stay, and the open-air bath in the Room and the meals were outstanding. The Onsen water was gentle and never tiring no matter how many times I soaked, and it was spacious enough for two adults. The meals were especially impressive—from the dashi to the way the tempura was fried, everything was perfectly done, showing the chef’s excellent sense. My mother, who has run a Japanese restaurant for many years, was also deeply moved and said the seasoning was superb. Since it was after the Kawazu cherry blossoms season, there wasn’t much sightseeing around the Accommodation, and there is no Onsen town nearby, so it feels best suited for those who want to relax in their Room. Still, I felt this is an Accommodation worth visiting even just for the food. I would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

    Luxurious Hot Spring Bathing

    To soothe our tired bodies and minds after the hectic year-end and New Year season, we visited to soak in the luxury of free-flowing natural hot spring water. We usually can’t secure a Reservation and stay in a detached Japanese-style Room, but this time we were able to stay in the only Western-style Room. For an older couple like us, it was wonderfully relaxing—sitting on the sofa felt just like being at home. The Western-style Room is located at the very back of the detached building, so you can’t see the steam rising from the hot spring tower, but we fully enjoyed the perfectly sized open-air bath just as we do in the Japanese-style Rooms. This Accommodation is also highly regarded for its large public bath and private baths, but even though we’ve stayed several times, we’ve never used them—we simply savor the open-air bath in our Room to our heart’s content. And it’s not just about the hot springs—the creative cuisine is delicious and a delight for both eyes and palate. There’s no doubt this is a truly healing Accommodation, perfect for anyone looking to slow down and recharge.

    A Relaxing Trip with My Mother

    I haven’t often stayed at a Ryokan that made me want to come back, but this is one I’d confidently recommend to friends and definitely want to visit again. For my 94-year-old mother, who is unsteady on her feet, the Facility having only stairs made it feel like she might fall inside the building. Even taking that into account, it was a wonderful Accommodation.

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

    I felt a bit uneasy about the initial explanation when we arrived at the Accommodation, but the staff who guided us to our Room and the restaurant service were excellent and reassuring. I’m glad we chose a Room with an open-air bath. The main building has a large public bath very close by, and the restaurant is also at a comfortable distance, making it easy to get around. The meals were also very delicious. Enjoying the Onsen while watching the rising steam was amazing! The lounge had a cozy atmosphere and was wonderful as well. One downside was that even after asking several times, the in-room safe could not be fixed, so we ended up having to carry our valuables with us, which was disappointing. Still, overall it was a lovely Accommodation. Since it rained this time and we couldn’t enjoy sweets on the terrace or take a walk in the garden, I’d like to visit again during a nicer season.

    At last, I was able to stay here.

    I’ve been coming to see the Kawazu cherry blossoms around this time for the past few years, and I was finally able to stay at this Accommodation, which had been very difficult to book. I was satisfied with everything—the Room, the Facility, and the hospitality. The Onsen had a spacious open-air bath, and I was able to soak and relax. The garden was also wonderful. In particular, in the morning after bathing in the Onsen, on the walkway heading toward the main building, I saw an unforgettable scene: beyond steam rising from the pond in front—like mist or “steam fog”—there were cherry blossoms in full bloom. It made me regret not having my smartphone with me. On top of that, whenever we needed help, your staff responded kindly and willingly, which truly made this trip a pleasant one. We arrived after 10:00 a.m., but the parking lot in front of the tourist association that we usually use was full, and nearby lots were also full. Thinking it might be a long shot, I asked if we could use your parking lot before check-in, and you kindly said yes. Later in the afternoon, after walking a lot and feeling quite tired—and with check-in time approaching—I tried to take a taxi back from Kawazu Station. Then I happened to meet the person who had helped us at the parking lot that morning; they were waiting at the station with your flag (so it was easy to recognize them). When I asked if we could ride together as well, they again kindly agreed. The meals were excellent—not only in flavor but also in how carefully each dish was served at just the right temperature: hot items hot, warm items warm, and cold items cold. The only thing worth mentioning—because I would like to stay again—is that on our first day, the door at one of the washing areas by the Onsen kept opening easily, making it feel quite cold there. I will definitely stay again.

    The Timeless Elegance of a Traditional Ryokan

    We visited to celebrate my father’s 88th birthday. Because we came during the Kawazu-zakura season, the Accommodation Fee ended up being about double the usual rate, which was disappointing. Staying four people in one Japanese-style Room and paying over JPY 60,000 per person per night was a bit too much… That said, the Accommodation—with its charming garden where the Kawazu cherry blossoms reflect on the water and a tower releasing clouds of hot-spring steam—was atmospheric, quiet, relaxing, and lovely. The illuminated garden at night was especially beautiful, and the view from the garden of the warmly lit building was also wonderful. We stayed not in a renovated wing but in a standard Japanese-style Room. It was clean, and since it was on the second floor, we really enjoyed having an enclosed veranda with a view overlooking the garden. The refrigerator in the Room had complimentary water, tea, and beer (one of each per person), and there were several kinds of sweets on the table as well—very nice. There is no bath in the Room, but the sink area was spacious and easy to use. I also appreciated that women can choose a colored yukata. I had been looking forward to seeing “Fukika,” shown in photos of their large public bath. The spacious rock bath does have atmosphere, but it is surrounded by walls so it doesn’t feel open-air. Since all baths are surrounded by private homes nearby as well, none of them felt very open. We also tried two of their three private baths; all were small with little variation. However, as rumored, the food was excellent. Being able to choose between fish or meat dishes was another plus. For fish I chose simmered splendid alfonsino (kinmedai) in broth; the clam-based soup was so good I finished every last drop. For meat I chose wagyu tataki with sautéed abalone—the beef was tender and juicy, and the abalone tasted exactly as hoped. My father loves abalone and he was very satisfied too. The final mixed rice dish featured yellowtail (buri) and komatsuna greens. They kindly made rice balls from what we couldn’t finish and delivered them to our Room as a late-night snack. My father has had serious health issues recently and eats less than before—but he finished everything this time—so it truly must have been delicious. They also prepared an anniversary plate for us; we’re grateful for their thoughtfulness. Breakfast made us happy too: rice cooked in an iron pot along with many side dishes that paired perfectly with it. All staff were attentive, making this a comfortable Accommodation overall. One note: for my parents who have difficulty walking, going up stairs to reach our second-floor Room turned out to be tougher than expected. By way of reference: The riverside tree-lined path is just steps from this Accommodation. The Kawazu cherry blossoms were at about 60% bloom—perfect timing—and we enjoyed both their vivid beauty against blue skies during daytime and their enchanting illuminated 모습 at night. Overall this is a high-quality Accommodation with very high satisfaction—but given that price… paying over JPY 60,000 per person really isn’t something I’d do again.

    It snowed around Ito City that day, and we arrived at Gyokuhachikan at 1:30 a.m. Even so, the staff welcomed us, and a meal had been prepared in our Room—we were truly grateful for their hospitality.     Wonderful Accommodation

    This was my fourth stay. The garden is wonderful, the property is spotless, the staff are thoughtful, and the Onsen is simply outstanding. The Room with an open-air bath is very comfortable, and the tea snacks, complimentary drinks, and amenities are all well stocked. The number one reason I keep coming back is the cuisine. From the first dish to dessert, everything is delicious and beautifully presented—completely satisfying for both body and mind. I also appreciated the late-night rice balls and broth. Breakfast is lavish and so delicious that it makes you not want to leave. I hope this Accommodation remains just as wonderful for a long time to come.

    This was my first visit in eight years. I came hoping to see the Kawazu cherry blossoms, but heavy snow on the way made me think I might have to give up. It was really cold. Still, the blossoms were just starting to bloom, and I was glad I could see a little of them. The Accommodation had the same charming atmosphere as before, which was wonderful.     The bath and meals were excellent.

    There aren’t lots of trendy in-house entertainment areas (like sweets and drink corners), but since we’re looking to relax and take it easy, that’s actually what we like about it. You can simply enjoy the Onsen and the meals. The building itself is starting to feel a bit dated in places, though. Still, we love this place and keep coming back again and again. If there’s one concern, it would be that the staff service feels a bit too by-the-book—that’s about it.

    It was the best accommodation!

    This is a historic Accommodation that opened in the Taisho era. The surrounding area isn’t exactly an Onsen town; it feels as if only Gyokuhokan stands on its own, yet it has a powerful natural hot spring source that gushes continuously. The Onsen facilities include two large public baths with alternating access for men and women, plus three private baths. From the large public bath you can see the hot spring tower in Funto Park right next door, and soak while being overwhelmed by the force of the sound. The water has no noticeable smell, but it’s soft and silky, leaving my skin smooth. The meals are outstanding: from appetizers to sashimi, a main course (choose one fish dish and one meat dish from three options each), rice dishes, and dessert—you can really feel the quality of the ingredients and the care put into everything. The mixed rice cooked in an earthenware pot was so delicious I ate too much to my own detriment. If you have leftovers, they’ll make them into rice balls for a late-night snack. They offer everything from sake to wine; we chose the pairing course with three drinks during dinner (3,000 yen), which was more than satisfying. That said, our Room did feel a bit dated. It was tatami-mat flooring, but some areas creaked when walking. At times we could also hear laughter from the neighboring Room, which may bother light sleepers or those sensitive to noise. Breakfast was again freshly cooked glossy rice in an earthenware pot with plenty of side dishes that make you want to keep eating—so much so that I gained 2 kg overall. All staff were kind and guided us politely throughout our stay. Needless to say, it’s perfectly located for Kawazu cherry blossom sightseeing on foot—the riverside cherry-lined path is just a 1-minute walk away. We came a little early this time, so we’ll definitely return to see them in full bloom. We also heard the menu changes monthly, which we’re looking forward to as well.     This memorable Onsen accommodation truly deserves its many repeat guests.

    I’d been interested in this Onsen Accommodation for a long time, and I was finally able to stay here as I had hoped. Both the Onsen and the meals were truly satisfying. However, since it was the coldest time of year, the washing area in the private bath was far too cold, so I only used it once and used only the large public bath after that. The large public bath was almost like having it to ourselves, so we were able to fully enjoy it. I felt that in a more pleasant season, the private bath would also be wonderful for a truly relaxing soak. At mealtimes, my husband and I could talk at ease, and when he dropped his chopsticks, the staff quickly brought new ones— their sense of distance was just right and made us feel comfortable. It’s easy to see why so many guests return again and again. This is an Accommodation we’d love to visit again someday in a different season. Thank you very much for taking care of us.

    A truly wonderful accommodation

    Throughout my stay, what stood out most was the wonderful service from the staff. The gentleman in charge of dinner served and checked in at just the right moments, so even though I’m not very comfortable with kaiseki meals in a non-private setting, I was able to enjoy everything smoothly. When I got a little lost on my way to the private bath at night, the male staff member on late shift at the front desk noticed immediately and kindly guided me—his thoughtful attention really made me happy. The woman at the entrance who assisted me at departure was also bright and professional, which put me in a great mood from the morning. Thank you as well for taking photos. The Room and baths were beautifully renovated; everything felt clean and very comfortable overall. However, perhaps because it’s a historic building, soundproofing isn’t particularly strong—I could easily hear noises such as the Room’s ventilation fan/air-conditioning sounds and doors opening and closing next door. Those who are sensitive to noise may find this noticeable. Also, each time I used the sink area, the toilet lid opened and closed automatically; it bothered me a bit and made me slightly concerned about durability—I should have asked about it. As for the baths (in-room, private, and public), while it may be unavoidable, I did notice some areas where wooden parts seemed to be deteriorating. Dinner was excellent in both content and service, and I was very satisfied. The non-alcohol pairing was especially appreciated since I don’t drink much alcohol. Breakfast was tasty but felt somewhat simple overall, with fewer hot dishes than expected—that part was a little disappointing. Still, being able to enjoy dessert on the terrace made me happy and is a lovely memory. Overall, this Accommodation was perfect for a quiet trip to reset both body and mind during my stay.     Completely satisfied with the bath and the modern Room!

    Natural hot spring water at the Accommodation—truly free-flowing from the source. We were also very satisfied to be able to reserve a private bath for free. The illuminated courtyard was charming, and we would like to visit again during the autumn foliage season. Just one thing: at breakfast, my wife’s chair cushion sank badly, which was disappointing.

    As always, we were very satisfied with the prix fixe dinner menu. It was delicious again this time. The Onsen is wonderful—the open-air bath in the Room is relaxing, but the water in the Sennin-buro is on another level. However, this time when I tried to have some juice after bathing, it seemed the orange juice concentrate was running low, and it was so diluted that I couldn’t drink it.

    Used for his birthday

    I stayed here for my boyfriend’s birthday. From the moment we arrived, the impressive entrance lifted our spirits, and once inside it felt like a soothing retreat. The autumn leaves were beautiful. Before being shown to our Room after entering the Ryokan, we were served handmade warabi mochi. It was incredibly delicious! The Room was even better than it looked on the website!! All the snacks and drinks in the fridge were complimentary!! The amenities were also very well stocked. Since we booked the Anniversary Plan, flowers and champagne were prepared in advance. The baths had towels and amenities available, so we could go almost empty-handed!! There is a large public bath and three private baths. This time we could only use two of the private baths, but we were very satisfied!! And dinner!! Everything was delicious, and there was a lot of food!! If you’re drinking alcohol as well, you might not be able to finish it all. (For the clay-pot rice as the main staple, they later brought what we couldn’t finish to our Room as ochazuke for a late-night snack—so there was no need to force ourselves to eat everything.) We had dessert on the terrace seats. There are kotatsu tables and blankets, but it gets a little cold. We were already satisfied at that point, but since it was a special occasion we also went to the bar. It was nearly full, but had a wonderful atmosphere. Breakfast came with side dishes that all paired perfectly with white rice—it was so good I ended up eating too much without meaning to. We also had dessert on the terrace seats; unlike at night, in the morning the temperature was just right and we really enjoyed it! As part of the Anniversary Plan when checking out, we received an album with two photos inside. They provide Shuttle Service to and from the station both on arrival and departure. My boyfriend was really happy too—it was an amazing trip overall. I’d love to stay again.

    I visited after a long time. I arrived around 4 PM, but I couldn't choose the times for dinner, breakfast, or the private bath at all. It seems there are two slots for dinner, but since neither was available to choose from, I was told they would contact me once a table was ready. For breakfast, 9:30 AM was too late for me, so I managed to negotiate and got it scheduled at 8:00 AM. As for the private bath, my preferred time slot was already fully booked. The available times during the night were too early and mostly overlapped with meal times. They mentioned that many guests were staying multiple nights and that the accommodation was fully booked as a reason. However, this is not something that should affect us directly. I also felt that there might be fewer restaurant seats than the number of guests staying. The room and wooden floors in the private bath showed significant wear and tear over time; some parts were broken and seemed dangerous. Additionally, stains on the walls of the guestroom's washroom stood out noticeably. The meals were very delicious and beautifully presented; we had an enjoyable dining experience overall. The staff members generally performed well; however, it’s disappointing to see both facility deterioration and operational issues affecting our stay. Lastly, while trying to relax in our guestroom's open-air bath before checkout time, we could hear scrubbing sounds from cleaning brushes coming from next door’s bathroom cleaning process. Unfortunately, this turned out to be a disappointing stay overall.
