The best hospitality you could ask for.

During a weekend of heavy rain brought by the autumnal rain front, I was finally able to stay at a long-established Accommodation in Unazuki Onsen. I could feel the president’s and proprietress’s heartfelt hospitality in every detail. Soaking in the open-air bath while watching the swift flow of the Kurobe River, enjoying dishes that highlighted seasonal ingredients and beautiful tableware, and experiencing excellent service—all were wonderful. At the Selene Museum of Art, I was able to view magnificent paintings of Kurobe Gorge while overlaying them with the scenery from the trolley train window. It truly healed my body and mind from within, so I would love to return to experience again this Onsen culture that blends wellness and tea ceremony.

My spouse and I visited with our son’s family of four, for a total of six people. As mentioned in other Reviews, the panoramic view of the valley from the open-air bath in our Room was wonderful. We didn’t see any stink bugs that we had been worried about, and it was a very pleasant Onsen experience. There happened to be fireworks, and we were able to sit on the benches prepared in front of the Hotel entrance and watch them at a leisurely pace. What was disappointing was that when our 9-year-old grandchild said about the sweets served with tea right after arrival, “This is delicious—I want another one,” I would have appreciated an appropriate response rather than just laughter. In today’s inflationary times, while I’m not asking for an all-inclusive plan, children are charged nearly adult rates. It would have been nice to have juice stocked in the refrigerator and a bit more creativity in the children’s meals. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. Thank you very much.

We were able to relax and unwind at our own pace.

We enjoyed a Multiple Night Stay in a special room with an open-air bath. The view from the window and the soothing sound of the Kurobe River made this Accommodation truly wonderful. The hot spring water was excellent, and we were able to relax at our leisure. The meals featured Toyama’s local ingredients, and everything was delicious—from the fish and Himi beef to Toyama Koshihikari rice cooked in a traditional pot. The trolley train ride was also fun. The staff were kind and provided pleasant, attentive service.

    Thank you for your support.

My spouse and I stayed in a special Room with a private bath. The moment we stepped inside, we were captivated by the breathtaking natural scenery filling the windows and the view of the Kurobe River. In addition to the large public bath and open-air bath, the open-air bath in our Room was also fed directly from the source, with fresh Onsen water continuously flowing. The temperature and water quality were excellent—so soothing that we wanted to soak again and again. Another highlight was that plenty of bath towels were available at both the large public bath and the open-air bath, making it comfortable no matter how many times we bathed. The meals felt less like experimental cuisine and more like carefully prepared Japanese dishes done right—simple, thoughtful, and beautifully finished one by one. The portions were just right, never overwhelming, and everything was delicious through to the end. The staff’s service was also perfect—not too close or too distant—and they spoke to us naturally at just the right moments, allowing us to relax without feeling any pressure. The Onsen, food, views, and hospitality—all of it lived up to its reputation. Thank you very much.

I might be expecting too much.

I made a Reservation because a guidebook described it as the best Accommodation in Unazuki Onsen.\nThe service was good. The open-air bath and large public bath were also great. However, the Facility and amenities are outdated. The meals were decent, but I don’t think they are worth the price. I may have expected too much.

We were able to spend a relaxing time.

I’m truly glad I chose Enraku for my first visit to Unazuki Onsen. The hospitality and meals were all very satisfying, and it’s easy to see why they are celebrating their 89th year in business. Thank you very much. (It’s also close to the trolley train station, so I enjoyed riding it, taking walks around the area, and photographing the trolley train in motion.)

An Accommodation That Lives Up to the Hype

This Accommodation was comfortable from check-in to check-out. We stayed in a Room with an open-air bath, and the water temperature was perfect—it melted away our fatigue. For both dinner and breakfast, the attendant served each dish at just the right time and shared local information. The proprietress greeted us in our Room before dinner, and at checkout she handed us souvenirs to eat in the car along with our luggage, then saw us off at the entrance. The service was subtle yet impeccably timed. It’s a truly guest-focused Accommodation that made us feel ready to do our best again starting tomorrow. Thank you!

We had a very comfortable stay.

Although the weather wasn’t great, we were able to relax—enjoying the bath and shopping at the on-site store. The meal course featured firefly squid and white shrimp, and everything was absolutely delicious. The rich flavor was completely different from the firefly squid sold at nearby supermarkets, and I still find myself thinking about it from time to time even after returning home. The hospitality was wonderful, and I would recommend this place to friends visiting Toyama. Thank you very much.

    To enjoy Hokuriku cr...

To enjoy Hokuriku crab and other seafood from the Sea of Japan, along with winter Onsen, we planned a trip from the Pacific side to Awara Onsen in Fukui and Unazuki Onsen in Toyama. At Enraku in Unazuki Onsen, not only was the food excellent, but the Onsen was wonderful as well, and our whole family enjoyed it many times. They also handled an unexpected issue quickly and sincerely—so much so that we almost felt sorry for troubling them. The attendant who served us during meals was also very kind and warm. The snowy-view Onsen we had been looking forward to was truly moving, and next time we would love to return during the season for the trolley train. To the head chef, thank you very much for the delicious dishes.

The accommodation is great, but the entire area is swarming with stink bugs.

A historic accommodation with newly renovated rooms featuring a semi-open-air bath, offering an excellent stay. The meals were delicious, and the attentive service by the staff made the dining experience enjoyable. However, during this season, the area was swarming with stink bugs, making it difficult to walk outside. Fortunately, the semi-open-air bath allowed us to enjoy it with closed windows. Unfortunately, we couldn't use the open-air public bath due to this issue. While this is beyond the control of the accommodation, those who dislike insects should be cautious when visiting this area during this time of year.

    The staff provided excellent service.

I stayed for two nights in a room with a private open-air Onsen. As it is a historic Ryokan, there is naturally some age to the property, but it has been renovated appropriately, allowing for a comfortable stay. The following are personal preferences and may vary depending on individual tastes. The room and bath had a strong chlorine smell. Personally, I am not fond of the smell or effects of chlorine, so I immediately turned off the hypochlorous acid diffuser in the room and opened the windows to refresh the air. The bath seemed to have too much water added to adjust its temperature, which resulted in high chlorine levels that made it difficult for me to use. After consulting with the manager, they promptly adjusted the water level and addressed my concerns about chlorine removal. I truly appreciated their attentive response and was able to fully enjoy the Onsen thanks to their efforts. Despite having many dietary restrictions, they accommodated my needs during meals as well. On arrival day, there seemed to be some miscommunication via email with the chef regarding ingredient changes, which caused slight difficulties. However, everything went smoothly on the second day. The shop staff also provided excellent assistance during my shopping experience. Thank you very much! Additionally, all other requests were met with consistently pleasant responses from everyone at this Ryokan. It made for an incredibly enjoyable stay—thank you! I look forward to visiting again!

I would love to stay here again.

A room overlooking the mountain stream, meticulously cleaned, with refined flavors and high-quality ingredients crafted by our head chef. Enjoy the clear and skin-friendly Onsen, along with the warm hospitality of our staff's smiles—everything was truly satisfying. Additionally, it is conveniently located just a 7-minute walk from Kurobe Gorge Torokko Train Station (Unazuki Station), making it perfect for enjoying the breathtaking scenery of Kurobe Gorge on the first train in the morning. We hope you enjoy an extraordinary experience here.

    The hot water is excellent.

Stayed in a special room with a private bath. The hot water was truly wonderful, and I soaked in it all afternoon. The staff were kind and pleasant, the food was delicious, and overall, I had a fantastic time—thank you! While I was generally satisfied as mentioned above, I'll note some points for those considering staying here. If these don't bother you, there's absolutely no issue—please enjoy the amazing hot water! The building itself is quite old with a retro feel (e.g., the elevator). The special room we stayed in seemed to have an added bath area on the riverside to an existing guest room. This created some contrast between that section and the original part of the room. The dining area also felt like it belonged to an older wing (though once inside your room, everything is clean and not bothersome). It's slightly different from places like Hakone where everything feels newly built and modern throughout. If I may add one point: for a special room, it would have been nice if the bedding were of slightly higher quality. The mattress felt somewhat worn out, which was unfortunate (though there were no issues with cleanliness). To reiterate—it’s a very lovely ryokan, and I’d love to stay again if given another opportunity!

The view, Facility, and service were good, which makes it all the more disappointing.

The Ryokan offered stunning views and an excellent open-air bath. However, the number of dishes served was overwhelming, and the rapid pace at which they were brought made it difficult to enjoy them calmly. Unfortunately, I couldn't finish all the food.

    Flowers and Paintings

This was my first visit to Unazuki Onsen. Engaku has a long history of operation. The building felt slightly old, but the room's open-air bath and amenities were well-prepared. Fresh flowers were arranged in the hallways and dining rooms, showing thoughtful attention to detail. The meals were very generous in portion size—almost too much for seniors to finish. Living in Yaizu, I can say that the sashimi was just as fresh and delicious as what we have here. Since it was a Japanese-style room with futons, charging my smartphone was a bit inconvenient. During meals and even at our send-off, the proprietress personally attended to us, creating a warm atmosphere. Thank you for your hospitality!

    Thank you very much ...

Thank you very much for your warm hospitality. I was a bit anxious about traveling with my elderly parents, but thanks to the kind support of your staff, it turned out to be a memorable and wonderful trip. The view from the Room was breathtaking; while the snowy winter scenery was beautiful during our previous visit, this time, the fresh greenery and sound of the river were truly soothing. My parents also expressed their desire to visit again. We look forward to visiting with them once more in the future. Thank you very much!

Thank you for a wonderful time.

This was my first visit. As it was also my first time at Unazuki Onsen, I was unsure which accommodation to choose, but selecting this one turned out to be the perfect decision. First of all, being able to choose the type of room and meal even for a single guest is greatly appreciated. The meals I had been looking forward to were beyond words—absolutely delicious. The fresh fish, the tenderness and flavor of Himi beef—everything was exceptional. Despite the generous portions, I enjoyed every bite from start to finish without getting tired of it. Breakfast also warmed me up from the morning and made for a happy start to the day. The staff who served us were efficient and warm-hearted, making me enjoy meal times even more. Please extend my gratitude to the head chef as well. The onsen water felt soft on my skin, and having an adjustable temperature in the private open-air bath in our room was a delightful feature—I ended up soaking seven times during my stay! Setting a slightly cooler temperature while listening to Kurobe River's gentle flow made it so relaxing that I could have stayed there forever. When taking the trolley train ride, they kindly looked after our car and provided helpful tips on how best to enjoy it; everyone at reception was friendly as well—they assisted with luggage and offered warm hospitality throughout. Choosing this accommodation turned out truly wonderful! People around me have always said this is "the best place" in Unazuki Onsen since long ago—and it's clear that its excellence has been carried forward over time. It exceeded all expectations beyond what I'd originally heard about it. I look forward to visiting again during another season. Thank you very much!

It was a slightly disappointing accommodation experience.

I had high expectations for this stay as my previous experience at the accommodation was great, but it seems the service quality has declined, possibly due to the busy season. While I won't go into details, I noticed inconsistencies in staff attitudes and felt that training might not be thorough. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be returning.

I would like to stay here again.

Chasing the cherry blossom front, we decided on a sudden trip to Niigata and Toyama. Since it was conveniently close to Asahi Funakawa, we chose to stay at Enraku. The hospitality, onsen, and cuisine were all exceptional. Maintaining such attentive service in a rural area must be challenging, especially when even urban areas struggle with employment stability. I was deeply impressed by the staff's dedication to providing heartfelt hospitality with limited resources. While some parts of the facility show signs of age, everything was impeccably clean and comfortable to use. I sincerely hope that this wonderful accommodation preserving Japan's traditional charm will continue to thrive under your care. I look forward to staying here again when visiting Toyama in the future!

It was my first time at Unazuki Onsen.

Since it was a stay during a cold wave, we were able to see a very beautiful snowy landscape. The onsen was great, including the large public bath, the open-air bath, and the cypress bath in our room. Our room was a renovated one with beds. The bedroom, powder room, and semi-open-air bath were very clean and comfortable, but the Japanese-style room and wide veranda seemed not to have been renovated at all and felt like an old Showa-era onsen property. Also, I thought that free drinks in the refrigerator would be expected for properties in this price range. There was no Nespresso or tea; only one free bottle of water surprised me. The lounge's drink service is only available in the morning; at the large public bath there is only water—no ice cream or coffee milk either. Perhaps it's just my perception that's off and not having these things is normal... For dinner, we chose a plan with snow crab (zuwai-gani). I've had crab courses at various properties before but it was my first time seeing crabs without tags which also surprised me. Some properties have shown us live crabs before cooking them or at least showed us tags which we could take home as souvenirs but there wasn't any of that here. It was also disappointing that breakfast items like grilled fish and omelets were completely cold. As for service: The female staff member who guided us to our room and handled our meals had a very pleasant demeanor with her smiley hospitality while even though young male staff members during meals seemed awkward their earnestness came through clearly too! Having shuttle service available to/from Shinkansen station proved extremely helpful!

The family visiting from overseas was also very satisfied.

My mother-in-law visited from overseas, and we were able to spend some quality family time together. Fortunately, it snowed on the day, and we enjoyed a breathtaking view reminiscent of a beautiful Japanese painting from the open-air bath in our room. We also indulged in a full-course Japanese meal for dinner and breakfast, using plenty of locally sourced ingredients. Each dish was so meticulously prepared and delicious that it moved us. Above all, the hospitality of the Ryokan staff was wonderful and very friendly, allowing us to hear many enjoyable stories about Toyama and the history of the Ryokan. Thank you for the wonderful hospitality and memorable time that made us fall in love with Toyama. We look forward to returning with our family again.

    Satisfaction beyond expectations

This was my first time at Unazuki Onsen. Even as a solo traveler, I was allowed to reserve a wonderful room with an open-air bath and breathtaking views, which shows how much this property values each guest. The shuttle service from the station, the check-in process at the front desk, and the room guide's assistance were all perfect. I wasn't expecting it, but both dinner and breakfast were served in-room, which was incredibly delightful. In an era where leisurely in-room dining is hard to come by, this service is truly appreciated. The person who served our meals was also very experienced. Having been on a long journey before arriving here and feeling quite tired, I was grateful for the chance to relax completely. Although it was a Japanese-style room, the futon was fluffy and provided an excellent night's sleep. The food was delicious; the open-air bath in my room was superb; even the massage chair in my room exceeded expectations. With such wonderful services like coffee in the lounge after breakfast, I wished for a multiple night stay. This ryokan is one I'd love to visit again soon. Due to scheduling conflicts this time around, I couldn't ride on the trolley train but plan to return for another stay at Enraku (Enraku).

You'll achieve beautiful skin with our natural hot spring water flowing directly from the source!

I visited Unazuki Onsen for the first time, aiming for the trolley train and onsen. The historic Enraku was indeed impressive. The very clean interior and the warm words of the staff made me feel at ease, and the numerous artworks displayed were clearly cherished, with fresh flowers casually arranged here and there (I was particularly impressed that each table in what seemed like a gallery had a flower arrangement), all of which conveyed a spirit of hospitality. The essential onsen was also wonderful, with the smooth, beautifying water that I love, allowing me to soak comfortably and relax. The view of the river flowing from the bath was also soothing. And! Above all, the cuisine was amazing!! It was truly moving. The dishes, prepared with a focus on every ingredient, were served at perfect timing one after another. Everything was delicious. What left a particular impression was the myoga. It had a crisp texture as if it had just been cut, and its refreshing aroma enhanced the dishes. All the ingredients, starting with the nodoguro, were excellent. For breakfast, I ended up eating too much because of the variety and the delicious rice. There were also some local specialty dishes that I tried for the first time, which was a discovery. It was truly a "feast." I wanted to give a perfect score, but what was a bit disappointing was that there was no washing area at the open-air bath in the room. Of course, there was one in the indoor bath, but since it was far from the open-air bath across the room, I didn't use it and washed my hair in the large public bath. It is a great property that I would recommend to friends and acquaintances. I encountered a property where I could feel the heart of Japan, straightforward and without pretense, for the first time in a while. Thank you for your hospitality. I support you.

Overall, the place feels a bit old, but the Room I stayed in was very spacious, clean, and nice. However, the distance from the Room with the bed to the toilet was a bit far, which was not well-received by the elderly who need to go to the toilet frequently at night. The balcony bath attached to the Room is pleasant. The only downside is the lack of a washing area. However, if you consider it a downside, it makes you feel like "I must go to the large public bath to wash my body!" so it's not much of a concern. The food is delicious. The meal was full of nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch) dishes, and the "nodoguro shabu-shabu" was extremely delicious and recommended. The score is not particularly high, but it left a relatively good impression.
