    We were very satisfied with our trip to Yufuin and would love to stay again.

    It was my first time back in Yufuin in about 40 years. It has now become a famous Onsen destination visited by many people, and since this Accommodation is located in an area popular with tourists, I was a little worried it might be noisy. However, once I stepped inside, a calm space opened up that made me forget the bustle outside. This time we stayed in a Room with an open-air bath. Perhaps because the building is relatively new, everything—including the shower room—was kept very clean and well maintained, and we were able to relax comfortably throughout our stay. The meals were also very carefully prepared, with an ideal portion size and excellent quality that even we, as an elderly couple, could fully enjoy. The staff kindly helped us choose drinks as well, and we enjoyed their recommended delicious sake. The location is outstanding too—right across from Snoopy Town and just a short walk to Lake Kinrin. We were fortunate to find such a wonderful Accommodation on our long-awaited return to Yufuin. It has become one of our favorite places to stay, and we would love to return again when we visit Yufuin. Thank you very much.

    The moment you step ...

    The moment you step onto the grounds, the surrounding bustle feels like a lie—it is wonderfully quiet. The décor and interior design are truly beautiful. The service and food are excellent, and while the large public bath is compact, it never feels crowded. Overall, we were very satisfied with the Accommodation itself. A park with Lake Kinrin and a lovely river are nearby, so it is likely a location rich in nature. However, at present (for better or worse), many large tour buses visit, and the street in front of the Accommodation was packed with people, making it difficult to drive through.

    Spring Memories in Yufuin

    We were completely satisfied with everything at Soan Cosmos—hospitality, cuisine, baths, and the Room. It was our first sightseeing trip in a while as a couple, and we were blessed with great weather. We walked from Soan to Yufuin Station and took a horse-drawn carriage there. The one-hour ride was a wonderful experience and has become a cherished memory. If you’re visiting Yufuin, I highly recommend Soan Cosmos. At the station, we also saw the Seven Stars in Kyushu and another train, which made us think that a train journey might be nice next time as well.

    This year again, head to Kurokawa and Yufuin during cherry blossom season.

    It was a beautiful, clean Accommodation that clearly invests in its facilities. (For our family, it was a downside that the living room TV felt small by today’s standards and there was no TV in the bedroom.) The service was attentive across all staff. Everyone we passed greeted us pleasantly. For our family, the food was underwhelming. We made a Reservation for the “Special Kaiseki,” but the ingredients were average overall. The sashimi seemed to rely on thickness, and the sea bream was noticeably less fresh. The quality of the meat and how it was grilled were good. (We have stayed at around 20 Accommodations in Yufuin, but the meals did not feel worth the price.)

    It was a girls’ trip...

    It was a girls’ trip with four close friends. Step off the lively street and it feels like another world. After walking along a leafy path, we arrived at the Accommodation and were welcomed with a welcome drink and snacks to soothe our travel fatigue—already we were very satisfied. The Room was also comfortable, with a table and chairs that made it easy to relax. The meals featured seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, which felt special, and everything was delicious. We also enjoyed chatting with the female staff member. For four people, the changing area in the bath felt a bit small, and if you sat at the edge of the washing area, a breeze from the open-air bath came in and felt slightly chilly. The hot water itself was wonderful, and the amenities were well stocked. The feel of the tatami underfoot was pleasant, we enjoyed an escape from everyday life, and everyone recharged their energy. Thank you very much—this is an Accommodation we’d love to stay at again if we have the chance.

    A memorable Accommodation combining a convenient location with peace and quiet

    This Accommodation had a charming, distinctly Yufuin atmosphere and a nostalgic feel. It seems to be a historic Ryokan, yet the interior is beautifully maintained, allowing us to relax and spend time in a calm setting. The Room was split between the first and second floors, with a living area and bedroom thoughtfully arranged. The space was used efficiently and felt very comfortable. The Facility amenities and supplies were well provided, so we never felt inconvenienced. The private open-air bath was especially relaxing and remains one of our best memories. Meals were served kaiseki-style, with each dish carefully prepared. The progression of flavors was excellent, and we enjoyed everything through to the end. Portions were generous as well, showcasing the chef’s skill. The location is also very convenient—within walking distance of Yufuin’s main strolling area and Lake Kinrin. Despite being close to sightseeing and shopping spots, it becomes surprisingly quiet once you return to the Accommodation, which felt truly special. Most impressive of all was the warm, attentive hospitality from the staff. We could really feel the thoughtful care that defines a traditional Japanese Ryokan. This is an unforgettable Accommodation we would love to visit again.

    The whole family is completely satisfied.

    The steak made with Bungo beef, fresh seafood from Beppu Bay, and even the desserts were all delicious. These were all dishes I wanted to try when visiting my second hometown, Oita Prefecture, and my entire family of food lovers was satisfied. Additionally, we were deeply touched by the warm hospitality of the accommodation, including souvenirs like rice grown by the staff and many other items, as well as kumiko latticework supervised by Eiji Mitooka. I would love to visit again next time with friends.

    The meals are excellent!

    Yufuin, a long-time dream destination. We made a reservation at Souan Kosumosu months ago to experience the highly-rated meals and the Mito-oka World. The result was complete satisfaction. Dinner featured dishes rich in dashi flavor, along with local vegetables and fresh seafood that truly warmed our hearts. The staff provided excellent service with a friendly demeanor. When we requested a knife at the front desk to cut cakes purchased on Yunotsubo Street, they kindly brought cake plates and forks for everyone to our room as well—such thoughtful hospitality! Breakfast was also plentiful with side dishes, and we even asked for extra rice. The private family bath and gender-separated baths were compact but perfectly sufficient for small groups. With only a few guest rooms available, we hardly encountered other guests, allowing us to enjoy a very quiet and relaxing environment. We would love to stay here again and will definitely recommend it to friends! Thank you so much!

    It exceeded my expectations!

    Chosen as a surprise for a trip to Yufuin with my best friend, Souan Kosumosu exceeded all expectations! The deciding factors were the highly praised cuisine and the furniture designed under the supervision of Eiji Mitooka, known for his work on the "Seven Stars" train. The stay was beyond imagination! Every dish was delicious and visually delightful. And the furniture—so stunning that I genuinely wanted to take it home! Bold yet perfectly harmonious with its surroundings. The staff were incredibly kind, and the young woman who served us left a warm impression with her dedication. It became an unforgettable stay. My best friend even said it might be their favorite trip ever, making me proud as we headed home!

    A Ryokan you'll want to stay at again and again.

    I recently stayed for the first time at this wonderful Ryokan, and I can confidently recommend it. The interior was designed by Mitooka of Nanatsuboshi, blending a classic and modern atmosphere beautifully. Despite staying during the middle of a busy three-day holiday with many tourists around, the Ryokan was incredibly quiet—so much so that I was surprised to find how crowded and noisy it was outside when I stepped out. With only 12 rooms available, the accommodation feels exclusive. There are plenty of baths, so there’s no crowding, allowing for a relaxing experience. The amenities are excellent as well; having an abundance of towels in the bath area was particularly delightful. Above all else, the meals were exceptional—each dish was incredibly delicious. I especially loved their homegrown rice produced by the Ryokan itself. The service exceeded expectations in every way, leaving me completely satisfied. I can wholeheartedly recommend this place and would love to visit Yufuin again just to stay at this Ryokan!

    The cuisine was highly rated, and the location was excellent, so we decided to stay here. Each dish was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. With many tourist attractions within walking distance, it turned out to be a very satisfying family trip. Many thanks to the staff!

    A surprising escape to another world outside.

    As soon as we stepped into the Ryokan, we were impressed by the unique atmosphere, unlike any other Ryokan we've experienced. The tatami hallway made it very easy for us elderly guests to move around. The private baths were well-equipped with plenty of towels and drinking water, showing great attention to detail. The food was incredibly flavorful and satisfying. The location was excellent, and our children thoroughly enjoyed shopping nearby. If I had to mention anything, it would be that the parking lot was a bit small and the Onsen water temperature was quite hot; however, overall, we had a wonderful birthday trip. Thank you so much! We hope to visit again if given the opportunity.

    Stay in a Room infused with the esprit of Eiji Mitooka.

    The tatami-floored interior, from the lobby to the room, is filled with the essence of Eiiji Mitooka's design, allowing for a wonderful stay. Both the private open-air bath in the room and the large public bath were spacious and relaxing. We were delighted that we could use the private family bath without a reservation if it was available. The meals were beautifully presented with attention to detail, offering enjoyment for both the eyes and taste buds. Thank you for making our trip enjoyable!

    I had an amazing time.

    The meals were exceptional and so plentiful that we couldn't finish everything, for which we felt a bit sorry. We stayed as a group of four women and enjoyed chatting endlessly, which extended our mealtime, but the staff accommodated us graciously.

    Had a great stay

    I trusted the rental car's navigation system and drove towards the accommodation, but I was directed to a narrow road near the accommodation. When I contacted them, they kindly assisted me, which was very helpful. The onsen left my skin smooth and soft. We stayed in one room for four adults, and it was spacious and comfortable. The food was also excellent.

    Night Accommodation for Mount Yufu Hiking

    After climbing Mount Yufu, I checked in with dirty shoes and a sweaty appearance. I chose this accommodation because I was drawn to the name "Souan," and it turned out to be an excellent choice for a truly satisfying stay. The facility skillfully utilizes its old building, equipment, and tableware to create a comfortable space for relaxation. Everything is well-cleaned, maintaining cleanliness despite the age of the property. The service is not excessive but perfectly balanced, allowing me to unwind after descending from the mountain. The open-air bath with a private tub is slightly small but fortunately remained available for my exclusive use throughout my stay, providing ample time to relax my body. As someone who prefers lukewarm water, I found the temperature delightful. The cuisine was also exceptional—delicately flavored dishes made with care and attention were paired perfectly with conversations about mountain memories shared with my companion during this blissful time together. I especially appreciated how subtly they presented old tableware repaired through kintsugi; it brought me joy when it appeared unexpectedly during our meal. This was my fourth visit to Yufuin, but next time I come back here again—I would definitely choose this accommodation! Highly recommended!

    Wonderful Accommodation

    This is a renowned and historic accommodation that I had always wanted to stay at, and this time my dream came true. My expectations were high, but the experience exceeded them in many ways, with countless impressive points that made for a truly satisfying stay. I already want to visit again soon. As it was designed by Mr. Mitooka, I was looking forward to the decor, and every corner of the property was absolutely stunning. The room itself was delightful from the ceiling to the furnishings, making it enjoyable just being there. The cleanliness was impeccable, and it felt like great care is taken in maintaining the building. The meals were all incredibly delicious and thoughtfully prepared—truly living up to their reputation. The dashi broth was particularly outstanding, and even the handmade rice was so good that I ended up eating more than usual. The seasonal presentation of each dish on beautiful plates added an extra touch of elegance. A female staff member who appeared to be in training wore a badge indicating so but worked very hard with a charming demeanor; she seemed genuinely happy when we complimented how delicious everything was, which made our dining experience even more enjoyable. The hospitality provided by all staff members reflected what you would expect from such an established ryokan—it allowed us to spend our time comfortably throughout our stay. After checking out and leaving our luggage for safekeeping while we explored nearby areas, they kindly offered us transportation back to the station later on—a gesture we deeply appreciated as we hadn’t expected such service after some time had passed since checkout. Other small yet delightful touches included handmade welcome sweets that were incredibly tasty; having three types of attire (yukata robes, samue loungewear sets, pajamas); towels readily available at both public baths and private baths; as well as top-tier hair dryers that I'd been wanting to try out—all contributing factors making this stay exceptionally pleasant. I truly enjoyed my time here so much that I wish I could return immediately! Thank you very much to all staff members for providing such a wonderful experience!

    Spacious and clean r...

    Spacious and clean room with an Onsen attached, where the children enjoyed a relaxing and fun time. The meals, room, and facility were good, and the staff worked hard to provide service. However, for this class of Ryokan, we would expect more refined service. The meals were delicious but could use a bit more creativity for this level of accommodation. As it was a special trip, we chose a higher-class Ryokan to enjoy ourselves but felt slightly disappointed. This would not be an issue at an ordinary Ryokan; however, our feedback is based on expectations for this class of establishment.

    We stayed here for a family trip. Since we were a group of four, we were upgraded to a larger room than the one in our Reservation, allowing us to relax comfortably. The location was convenient with popular shops and Lake Kinrin nearby, and it was also easily accessible from the bus stop. The hospitality of the hostess and staff was excellent; they kindly accommodated even slightly difficult requests, making our stay truly relaxing. The meals were outstanding! Both dinner and breakfast were incredibly delicious. Usually, I feel overwhelmed when served too much rice or sweet desserts at the end of meals, but this Ryokan asked about portion sizes, which was very helpful. Of course, the bath and hot spring water were exceptional as well. If I have another chance to visit Yufuin, I would love to stay here again. Thank you very much!

    The surroundings are lively, but inside the Hotel, it was calm and comfortable. The meals were delicious, and they accommodated ingredients I am not fond of, which made my experience highly satisfying. Since the dining area was a private room, I could relax and enjoy my time. The rice was very tasty. Having two Rooms made it more convenient to stay. The staff were also kind and helpful.

    Welcome drink and sweets upon check-in, tatami flooring throughout the entire accommodation, and the comfort of walking barefoot! Meals are so satisfying that you'll be completely full. The baths include private family baths and separate open-air baths for men and women, offering ultimate relaxation. Above all, every staff member maintains just the right level of attentiveness!     A Long-Awaited Trip to Yufuin

    About 30 years ago, I traveled across Kyushu on a tight schedule. During that trip, I visited Beppu and Yufuin and was deeply impressed by the Onsen and the vast mountain scenery, which brought me back this time. Souan is a charming Ryokan. The interior design and furnishings create a calming atmosphere, and the view of the lush green Mount Yufu from the window is truly soothing. The meals, made with local ingredients, were very satisfying. Additionally, I was deeply impressed by the courteous service of the staff. I learned that this Ryokan has a history of 57 years, which is considered relatively short in Yufuin—quite surprising! The entire Ryokan is thoughtfully designed to create a cohesive and pleasant space. In recent years, Yufuin has seen an increase in foreign visitors to the point where it almost feels like it's not Japan anymore; however, within this Ryokan, I didn’t feel that way at all.
