Unforgettable Sweetfish and a Relaxing Accommodation

The balance of quality and quantity was perfect, making for a truly memorable meal. What impressed me most were the ayu sweetfish, which can be enjoyed whole from head to tail, and the cutlet, which was surprisingly tender. Both were outstanding. Once you’ve tasted that ayu, regular salt-grilled fish may feel a bit lacking in comparison. The attentive service from the staff member in charge was also excellent. They not only matched our dining pace but also discreetly noticed what we needed and even showed consideration for our well-being. Their consistently thoughtful and comfortable hospitality allowed us to relax and enjoy the meal with peace of mind. The only slight disappointment was that the lighting throughout the building felt a bit dim. While it creates a calm atmosphere, it may make moving around difficult in some areas for guests with poor eyesight or older guests. Overall, it was a wonderful Accommodation—truly comfortable and unforgettable. Thank you very much for your warm hospitality.

    I’m satisfied.

We stayed two nights in Sono 9 (Japanese-Western style Room). Both dinner and breakfast were elaborate and completely different on each of the two days, and everything was delicious. We also received a 720 ml bottle of daiginjo sake as a Diamond Member benefit. The Room had two sinks, which was very convenient for a couple, as we could each lay out our own toiletries. The bath was a perfectly soothing Onsen and available 24 hours a day, so we were able to fully enjoy it. Over the two days we visited all the spots in Nasu that we wanted to see, and we were able to relax comfortably in the Room—overall, we were very satisfied.

I’d love to stay here again.

This was our first stay. The location was a little hard to find, but we arrived safely. The Room was spacious and we were very satisfied; my wife was especially pleased. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious (creative cuisine) and excellent Japanese food. The in-room bath was also outstanding. Although the staff were young, they were very kind, and my wife said she would like to visit again. Thank you to all the staff members.

    A Delicious, Luxurious Holiday

The Room was spacious, and we were able to relax comfortably. Once we tried the key-shaped open-air bath, it all made sense—it was a very thoughtfully designed tub. Every dish was delicious. I still can’t forget how good the sweetfish was; it may have been the best I’ve ever had. And the watercress takikomi rice—I wasn’t expecting it, but it was also excellent. We were able to spend a very satisfying holiday. We’d love to visit again; next time we’ll stay in a different Room. One selfish request: I thought it would be nice if the TV could connect to Netflix—though I suppose we should be enjoying nature more. NON

A heartwarming first stay in Nasu—soothing comfort with the best smiles and delicious cuisine!

It’s been a while since I last felt like writing a Review. Nasu was hotter than I expected on my first visit, but thanks to the wonderful hospitality of everyone at “Kai,” we had a very comfortable stay. Our whole family was soothed by NM’s smile when showing us to our Room, and the staff in charge of breakfast and dinner were also friendly and warmly attentive. We also tried the premium soft-serve ice cream at a nearby farm that you recommended—it was wonderfully rich and impressive! The cuisine was the most delicious we’ve had in quite some time, with flavors that truly reflected the season. Each dish was delicate, and we thoroughly enjoyed the creative touches throughout. We stayed during Obon this time, but next time we’d love to visit in early summer or autumn! Thank you very much!

    A Relaxing Accommodation

We were warmly welcomed, and the service was kind, friendly, and never overbearing. The meals were outstanding—every dish was carefully prepared and delicious. The in-Room bath is fed by free-flowing hot spring water, so it was great to be able to use it anytime.

    Highly satisfied

The Room was spacious, and the meals were delicious—we were very satisfied. My husband especially loved the main cutlet. There were plenty of towels, so I was happy to be able to use a fresh one no matter how many times I took a bath. Since each Room type seems to be different, I’d love to stay in another Room next time.

We had a wonderful stay. Thank you very much.

The service was excellent, the cleaning was thorough, and the Room was spacious. The furnishings were delightful to look at, and the hot spring water quality was wonderful—I truly enjoyed my stay. Above all, every dish was exceptional. The charcoal-grilled salted ayu sweetfish was perfectly paired, and I heard that the seasonal ayu takikomi rice is available from June to August; it made me want to return and savor ayu dishes here as they grow through the season. We also had the leftover rice cooked in a clay pot made into onigiri later, and it was still outstandingly delicious even after some time. If I could mention one small thing—purely a personal preference—I would have been happy if there were postcards, memo paper, and a pen in the Room. There was an iPad in the Room, so it wasn’t inconvenient, though it did make me think of how times have changed. In any case, I was completely satisfied and felt the heartfelt hospitality of everyone at this Accommodation throughout my stay. Thank you very much.

    We had a relaxing stay.

This was my first stay at Nasu Bettei Kai. My brother-in-law had stayed before and said it was wonderful, so the four of us—my sister-in-law and her husband, my wife, and I—came along. It had been a while since we visited Nasu, and unfortunately it rained, but since our main purpose was to stay here, we didn’t mind. In fact, the sound of the rain together with the greenery in the garden made for a truly relaxing time. The Onsen was free-flowing, and the open-air bath in our Room was exceptional. This time I stayed in Room 5, while my sister-in-law and her husband made a Reservation for Room 9—both were simply outstanding. Dinner was also excellent; dishes like salt-grilled young sweetfish were superb, and the Nasu beef tenderloin was delicious—we were completely satisfied. It’s rare to find an Accommodation where both the Rooms and cuisine are this satisfying, but we truly enjoyed everything. We’ll definitely return, and next time we’d like to stay in a different Room.

    Exceptional hospitality.

Set amid lush greenery that makes you forget the city bustle, the Accommodation’s design and atmosphere were wonderful. Above all, the attentive care and hospitality were outstanding—I've stayed at many Hotels and Ryokans, and this was the best. I believe their staff training is exceptionally thorough. Several of the dishes could truly be called exquisite. The drink selection on the menu was also very satisfying. The bath was excellent as well, with great water and nothing to complain about. Overall, I had a truly pleasant Hotel stay. Thank you very much.

    Open-air bath

I stayed in Sono Ni, and the open-air bath was wonderful. The bath spout carried a faint hinoki aroma, the tub was made of black stone, and from there I could look out onto a fresh green courtyard garden. In the stillness, I heard only the gentle sound of flowing water and birdsong, and the spring water was beautifully clear and colorless. It was a refined, soothing time.

I stayed here for the first time to celebrate my companion’s birthday. Both the Room and the meals were wonderful, and I was truly impressed. My companion had injured their hand, so I asked for a fork at dinner, and at breakfast the next morning, without saying anything, a fork was already set on the table—I was moved by your hospitality. I would love to stay again.

An Accommodation that promises a comfortable stay

This time we stayed in Room No. 4. As there were only two of us, we did not use the separate Japanese-style room at all, but they had prepared an extra set of futon bedding in advance for my husband, who prefers a thicker mattress. It may seem like a small thing, but it is rare to find an Accommodation that truly understands guests’ preferences and responds so smoothly. While there are some areas in the Room where aging is noticeable, the architectural beauty—such as the walls, floors, and arched ceiling—has great character and is wonderful. However, the floor was very cold underfoot. There is no floor heating, so if you stay during colder seasons, I recommend bringing warm socks. The in-room bath was spacious and included a reclining bath; we could relax and enjoy it at our leisure, which was very satisfying. As always, the meals were thoughtfully prepared; the timing of each course was excellent, and everything was delicious. They also accommodated ingredients we do not like without issue. The weather was great this time as well, and the starry sky was incredibly beautiful—we were truly moved. If I may make a request: it would be nice to have two types of pillows with different heights. Also, having samue loungewear or nightwear in addition to yukata would make relaxing in the Room even more comfortable. We will visit again when the time is right. Thank you very much again for everything.

    With only a few Room...

With only a few Rooms on a spacious property and a semi-open-air bath in the Room, I was able to relax at a leisurely pace. The bath was large and comfortable, so I was very satisfied. However, the Accommodation building and the dining building are separated, and depending on the Room you may need to use stairs, so it might be a bit inconvenient for guests with mobility issues. Thank you very much.

We’re sorry to hear you were disappointed.

I saw somewhere that guests can use the large public bath at the neighboring Sansuikaku, but there was no explanation at all. I was also not informed of the passcode for the tablet provided in the Room, so I had to call the front desk to ask about both. In addition, I rang the front desk bell to ask how to get to Sansuikaku, but no one came no matter how many times I rang it, and I ended up waiting for a while. Come to think of it, there was also no guidance about emergency exits. I feel a more attentive level of assistance would have been appreciated. The in-Room bath and meals were excellent, which made this especially disappointing.

A top-tier Accommodation in Nasu—though there are a few minor drawbacks.

We stayed in the detached suite “Sono Ju.” The hospitality and cuisine were very satisfying. Away from the bustle, you can spend an elegant time surrounded by nature. In the brief moment I signed at reception, they seemed to notice that I am left-handed, and from the start of the meal everything was set for a left-handed diner—I was truly impressed. The Room was spacious and clean, and the thoughtfully crafted design deserves high praise. However, the heating did not work and it was cold throughout our stay, and the TV would not turn on because it could not receive a signal. The Onsen also didn’t seem to have a particularly good quality; it didn’t warm me through to the core and felt little different from regular hot water. Of course, since this is Nasu I wasn’t expecting much in terms of spring quality from the beginning, but it was still disappointing. As for the food, there were many local ingredients as well as ingredients with interesting stories behind them. With careful explanations provided, it was wonderful—both visually and in taste—and we were very satisfied. While it has the presence of a luxury Ryokan, there are some finishing touches missing; in terms of value for money, it may fall into the poorer category. It’s a shame that issues with Facilities and how cold it was kept us from wanting to return. I hope things improve going forward.

Thank you very much for taking such wonderful care of us during our stay at “Nasu Bettei Kai.” Thanks to your warm hospitality and attentive service, we were able to enjoy a relaxing and luxurious time. Wonderful.

I had long thought this was a wonderful Accommodation, and I feel it has become even more outstanding after the renovation. In particular, I noticed a clear improvement in both the meals and the service. Thank you very much for your thoughtful consideration of my wife, who has many food dislikes. We would love to visit again.

    A high-grade, great-value accommodation

We stayed as a family of three at a discounted rate, possibly from an IKYU fair. The very large Onsen-style bath in our Room (No. 9) and the meals featuring local, seasonal ingredients were especially memorable. The highlights were the small hot pot with a variety of mushrooms and game fowl, grilled Itadamasu trout, and takikomi rice with hana wasabi and eel—everything was outstanding. We also unexpectedly got hooked on the puzzle game we bought at the shop, and it was a nice bonus that we could watch Netflix and Amazon Prime on the large TV. If I had to mention any areas for improvement, the Room lighting felt a bit dim, and we would have preferred beds. Thank you as well for being flexible with our late check-out. We also enjoyed the complimentary sake later—it was delicious.

    A Stylish Accommodation

I was finally able to visit at the right time. The staff’s service was just right, and I was able to relax throughout my stay. The food was also very delicious. The Room was spacious—almost too much for two people. The open-air bath was quite large as well, so I enjoyed soaking in it many times at a leisurely pace. It felt comfortable from start to finish, and the pleasant afterglow stayed with me on the way home. It was an Accommodation that made me want to visit again.

    Relaxation

Since I couldn't rest much during the New Year, I looked for a nearby accommodation to relax. Upon visiting, I thoroughly enjoyed not only the room's open-air bath but also the wonderful dinner. The final dish, a black wagyu beef fillet cutlet, was tender and exquisite. It was quiet and relaxing. The bath with a view of the snow added charm and was delightful as well.

    I stayed here twice ...

I stayed here twice a long time ago, and it has been upgraded and renewed since then. The reception and restaurant are now combined, creating a very lovely space. While the exterior seems unchanged, the rooms feature sophisticated designs that served as great interior inspiration. Even the switches are thoughtfully designed. The bathroom is spacious with a luxurious feel, offering plenty of room to relax. The underfloor heating was also a nice touch. Although there is no view, during the autumn foliage season, the trees along the pathway to the restaurant were beautifully colored and created an elegant atmosphere. Dinner started with delicious fig appetizers; the sashimi of white-fleshed fish (kue) was fresh with a firm texture. The ayu fish filled with eggs was uniquely tasty, while the mushroom steamed dish had an incredible aroma of matsutake mushrooms. The wagyu fillet cutlet was tender and fluffy, and dessert—a rich yet refreshing pudding topped with yuzu sauce—was delightful. Everything was absolutely delicious! They even wrapped up leftover sake and rice into onigiri (rice balls) and promptly delivered them to our room—a gesture that truly showcased their hospitality. Breakfast was simple yet flavorful; every dish tasted wonderful, especially the shiny polished rice. The grilled mackerel marinated in secret sauce from Ibaraki's specialty shop was incredibly tasty—I finished everything on my plate! Before leaving, one of their staff kindly took our photo in front of their noren curtain as a keepsake memory. This accommodation left such an impression that I would love to visit again during another season!

The accommodation did not match the price.

I stayed expecting an atmospheric building and a room with an onsen. The location requires attention. Access by train and bus is not practical, as buses run about once an hour. The path from the nearest bus stop to the accommodation is steep, making it quite burdensome if you have luggage. Shuttle service during check-in and check-out times would be helpful. Inside the facility, the music played at reception and during dinner did not match the ambiance of the space, leaving a restless impression. Moving to guest rooms involves many stairs, which could be challenging for those with mobility concerns. On the other hand, the room's onsen was excellent. It was spacious with free-flowing hot spring water available 24 hours a day. The amenities were high-quality, including ReFa showerheads and hairdryers. As for dinner, I felt that the menu did not match its price point. The grilled ayu fish cooked over an irori was overdone and dry—disappointing. While the rice in takikomi gohan was delicious, I noticed a fishy smell in the eel that detracted from its quality. Additionally, descriptions of their original sake were printed on worn-out menus that contrasted sharply with newly printed food menus—a noticeable inconsistency. Improvements are needed for not only sake but also for wine and spirits drink lists overall. At checkout time during rain, staff showed consideration by assisting with luggage; however, they were without raincoats or covers to protect themselves or guests' belongings from getting wet—indicating insufficient preparation in terms of equipment or reception care. While there are appealing aspects such as architecture and onsen facilities (hardware), considering its price range suggests improvements are necessary in hospitality and operational details (software). Unfortunately, I will not revisit this accommodation again.

    Traveling with 2 infants

The staff were very kind and attentive. When our 2-year-old child got restless during dinner, they kindly served the dishes faster. We forgot to bring scissors to portion out the adult meals, but when we asked, they immediately lent us a pair. Additionally, when we accidentally wet the vest our child was supposed to wear for sleeping and sought help, they promptly offered to dry it for us. They quickly came to pick up the wet vest and brought it back dry directly to our room. Their thoughtful assistance made our stay comfortable even with a young child. Thank you very much!

    Truly one of a kind.

There is a world here that can only be fulfilled at Nasu Kai. The moment you step inside, the fragrance is soothing, yet it never lets you forget the sense of luxury. The perfect balance and attentiveness of the staff, the comfort of the Room, and above all, the cuisine that makes me think every time, “I want to eat this again.” I would never want to eat something again unless it truly moved me. I believe this Accommodation is one of those rare places that makes that wish come true. The reason I can feel such emotion and satisfaction must be due to unseen effort and meticulous attention to detail. Thank you very much to the manager and all staff for your care. I’m looking forward to enjoying the world of Nasu Kai again next time.

Harmoniously blending architecture and interior design with the garden.

During our previous stay, meals were served in the room, but after the renovation, dining is now offered at the restaurant. We revisited the same room and opted for a breakfast-only plan this time. The restaurant's atmosphere was excellent, and it felt comfortable to dine as long as it wasn’t crowded. Next time, we would like to try a plan that includes dinner. Of course, we were also satisfied with the room, onsen, and service. The architecture and interior design seamlessly blend with the garden in a way that feels timelessly pleasant—something you wouldn’t find in apartment-style hotels. Although nighttime noise from other rooms was initially bothersome, it was promptly addressed after consultation. We look forward to our next stay!

A luxurious accommodation surrounded by nature

We stayed with my wife and two children (4 years old and 1 year old). Surrounded by greenery in a quiet environment, we didn’t encounter other guests and enjoyed a relaxing private time. The bath was spacious enough for all four of us to stretch out, and above all, the meals were exceptional!! My wife especially loved the grilled salted sweetfish. At first, I wondered why Nasu beef was served as fillet cutlets instead of steak, but it turned out to be incredibly delicious!! The morning yuba dish was also gentle and comforting. Thank you to the staff who maintained our privacy while being kind to our children! We will definitely stay again!!

    Thank you for your patronage.

Our child suddenly decided to go the day before. We inquired with little hope, but you kindly accepted, and we are truly grateful. Thank you so much. We were looking forward to our stay as the reviews were highly rated. As soon as we entered the room, my husband was absolutely thrilled with it. I might have seen him that excited for the first time ever! The accommodation is surrounded by nothing much, and the only shop nearby was at a neighboring ryokan of the same group, but there was no need to buy anything extra. The amenities and even drinks and snacks in the refrigerator were plentiful—so much that we couldn’t finish them all (including alcohol, water, juice, pudding—all without any additional charges). Above all else, the bath was spacious with areas where you could lie down in the tub; we enjoyed multiple baths during our stay. Plenty of bath towels were provided along with a place to dry them afterward. The dining area was separate from our room/building. When it started raining heavily around dinner time—a short walk away—we mentioned getting wet might be unavoidable; however, umbrellas were thoughtfully prepared at the entrance so we could move without getting soaked. The meals had generous portions; while we couldn’t finish everything during dinner service (especially rice), they kindly made onigiri for us as a late-night snack instead! What stood out most though wasn’t just balanced delicious food—it’s how friendly & attentive staff members like one particular lady assigned impressed us deeply through her kindness throughout interactions. During dinner when my son needed tissues due allergies-related nasal issues—they lent some immediately—and next morning breakfast table already pre-set included tissues anticipating needs ahead unprompted showing genuine care towards guests’ comfort overall experience! This trip's theme focused relaxing spending quality personal downtime within hotel premises itself yet left wishing extended longer stays possible given how wonderful entire visit turned out being here! Highly recommendable accommodation worth revisiting again someday soon hopefully! Thank You So Much!!
