    Guest Review: Stay at Matsumoto Castle Sannomaru & Matsumoto Marunouchi Hotel

    The Hotel itself was beautiful—worthy of having “castle” in its name—and had a calm, refined atmosphere, which I really enjoyed. The breakfast was delicious and satisfying, but I would have been even happier if there were a few more Nagano-specific items. The staff also provided kind and courteous explanations. It’s a Hotel I’d like to stay at again.

    Great hospitality.

    This was my first stay. I chose this Hotel because I wanted to see Matsumoto Castle and it was nearby. The Hotel itself was average, but the front desk staff were very helpful. They kindly assisted with arranging a taxi as well. It was disappointing that I couldn’t see Matsumoto Castle due to the rain.

    I stayed here after a touring trip. This Hotel has a calm, refined atmosphere. The location is convenient, and above all, the breakfast venue—formerly a bank—perfectly matches Matsumoto’s history and heritage.

    We had a relaxing stay.

    I stayed here with my son. We booked a Standard Twin room, and the Facilities were well-equipped and comfortable. We used the breakfast buffet. The quality was excellent—I forgot it was a Business Hotel. We were also able to walk to Matsumoto Castle first thing in the morning, so it wasn’t too crowded and we could take our time sightseeing. Thank you to all the staff for your courteous service.

    Satisfaction Beyond Expectations

    I love Matsumoto and often stay here the night before heading to Kamikochi. I usually choose one particular Accommodation with a large public bath, but this time I couldn’t make a Reservation and happened to find availability here. To be honest, because the price was low, I didn’t expect much—but it far exceeded my expectations! Reason 1: The Room is clean! The bathroom and sink area in particular were very clean and felt fresh. Even without a large public bath, I was very satisfied. Next time I’d like to try the nearby public bathhouse. Reason 2: Great location—close to Matsumoto Castle, Nawate Street, restaurants, and other central spots. It’s about a 10-minute walk from the station, and I loved being able to stroll around Matsumoto Castle in both the morning and evening. In the morning, I took the complimentary hot coffee from the lobby and spent time on a bench by the castle enjoying the view of the castle with the mountains behind it. Reason 3: The bed sheets feel great. I’m sensitive to smells, but everything felt very clean and I slept comfortably. As for requests: I’d be happy if you offered individually packaged shampoo options to choose from. The one provided didn’t suit me well, so I regretted not bringing my own—this was my only downside regarding amenities. Also, check-in was at 15:00 but we waited quite a while… If you arrive on the Azusa train from Tokyo (arriving at 14:35), you’ll reach the Hotel before 15:00. If guests could enter their Room even five minutes early when they arrive just before check-in time, it would feel like a nice bonus. It was probably a busy Obon period, but if this improves it would be full marks for service. Overall, I’m very satisfied and would like to stay again. Since we had an early morning start we couldn’t use breakfast; however, it would be wonderful if guests who don’t use breakfast could receive something like a sandwich service instead.

    Breakfast Buffet at a Registered Tangible Cultural Property

    I was traveling solo and chose the Ladies’ Healing Plan. It came with a Panasonic facial device, a foot massager, and drinks, which really lifted my mood. The washroom had IGNIS amenities, and the beauty cream in the room was labeled as a complimentary gift. The pajamas were stylish too! I’d checked the breakfast venue in Reviews beforehand, so I was looking forward to it. It’s irresistible for fans of retro architecture. They also let me tour the chapel at the top of the stairs. I was happy that many of the dishes used locally sourced ingredients. It was so relaxing!

    No change.

    This was my second stay this year. I was able to relax in the same well-cleaned Room as always. Also, although this is not an issue on the Hotel’s side, it was disappointing that some Southeast Asian guests were noisy when coming in and out of their Rooms.

    Cleanliness

    The location was much more convenient than I had imagined, which was truly great. Taking the bus from the Hotel was also more comfortable and smoother than expected. Thank you for accommodating my requests, and I appreciated the nice view. The mattress and pillows were comfortable, and I was able to rest well. I would like to stay again.

    This is strictly a Business Hotel.

    The photos set expectations a bit too high, so the gap was somewhat disappointing. The breakfast and the Room were only at a Business Hotel level. With service at many Business Hotels improving recently, it inevitably felt lacking. The location is excellent, so if you go without high expectations, I think you’ll be satisfied.

    An elegant and stylish Hotel

    It was a truly happy stay, with the convenience of being close to Matsumoto Castle and within walking distance of other nearby sights, and the pleasure of enjoying a high-quality breakfast in a beautiful building. The kind and attentive service made us feel at ease, and seeing international guests who were well-mannered and quiet, enjoying an adult-style trip, also made us feel elegant.

    Located near Matsumoto Castle and within walking distance of Matsumoto Station, with many restaurants nearby, the location is excellent. This Hotel has a refined atmosphere, including its amenities and Facilities, and I had another comfortable stay. The staff were courteous and made me feel welcome.     A clean, comfortable Accommodation in the heart of the sightseeing area

    It was very convenient, located just a few minutes’ walk from central attractions such as Matsumoto Castle, Nakamachi Street, and museums, and about a 10-minute walk to Matsumoto Station.\nIt was a small, clean Accommodation, and we enjoyed a delicious breakfast.\nIf staying in Matsumoto City, this is the Accommodation I would choose.

    A lovely Room with a view of Matsumoto Castle.

    We stayed here for a night while visiting friends in Matsumoto with three generations of our family. From the Room, we could see Matsumoto Castle illuminated at night, and in the morning we had a clear view of the castle in the crisp air. It was very helpful that we could leave our car and walk to Matsumoto Castle. The triple Room was convenient even with children, and we were able to relax and rest well. It was a corner Room on the top floor. Thank you for letting us stay in such a wonderful Room. We would like to stay again.

    Dinner at “Hikariya” was also wonderful.

    Dinner and the kaiseki cuisine at “Hikariya Higashi” were wonderful. “Hikariya” is a restaurant renovated from the storehouse residence of the prestigious former merchant house “Mitsuya,” and dining in such a dignified, historic setting made for a truly enriching time. The macrobiotic-based, body-friendly dishes using local vegetables were also delicious. It was an excellent Plan with great value for money. I would love to stay again.

    Convenient

    It was conveniently located near Matsumoto Castle, with the shops and restaurants we wanted to visit within walking distance. The bar recommended by the front desk was also great. However, the Room slippers were not disposable, so I felt uncomfortable and couldn’t use them barefoot.

    The perfect Hotel for my ideal stay

    Bath salts are available in the lobby for you to take freely. The Room was clean, and the bathroom and toilet were very user-friendly.

    Favorability.

    My overall impression was: clean, quiet, and I want to stay again. It has been renamed and newly renovated, and I was satisfied with both the Room and the Facility. The bathroom in particular had no odor, great water pressure, and piping hot water. It was also very well cleaned. Last year, there were no vacancies at Hotels around Matsumoto Station, and even when there were, prices were so high that I gave up. Now there are vacancies almost everywhere, and prices seem to be back to what they used to be. There are some Western guests from Europe and the U.S., but it is quiet.

    Near Matsumoto Castle

    The castle is nearby, the Hotel is clean, and the staff provided excellent service! The breakfast was absolutely satisfying! I will definitely use this place again when I visit Matsumoto! However, having to call for a parking Reservation is a bit inconvenient. I personally didn't make a Reservation and parked at a nearby parking lot, but it would be great if this could be improved. Thank you for the wonderful service!

    Consider room assignments on available dates.

    This was my third stay in about 10 years, but this time I stayed on the 4th floor, and the view from the room was disappointing as it faced the roof of the restaurant building. Since it was a Sunday with few guests, I would have appreciated more consideration in room assignment. The building seems old, but the bathtub was spacious, and cleanliness was not an issue. The buffet-style breakfast had smaller portions for each dish, possibly due to fewer guests; however, there were plenty of options including local specialties and dishes with extra care from the kitchen. That said, it seemed like professional chefs were not preparing breakfast as only scrambled eggs—something even amateurs can make—were offered as freshly cooked egg dishes. Additionally, I felt that coffee served by machine could benefit from a slightly longer brewing time.

    Convenient for sightseeing

    The accommodation allowed us to store our luggage before check-in and after check-out, making it easy to explore the area hands-free. Matsumoto Castle is within walking distance, and it's very convenient for strolling around Nawate Street and Nakamachi Street. Breakfast was served in a lovely space with a buffet offering a wide variety of delicious options. However, I felt uncomfortable when staff asked if they could clear my plate while I was still eating fruit. The restaurant wasn't full, so it seemed like an inexperienced staff member who wasn't paying attention to the surroundings. Other than that, it’s a satisfying accommodation overall.

    I stayed at this hotel to spend my last trip of the year in Shinshu, in my favorite city, Matsumoto. I have stayed here several times before and always enjoyed the delicious breakfast. However, the room assigned to me this time had an odor when I entered. After returning from dinner, the smell became even more noticeable—it seemed like perfume from a previous guest lingered in the room. When I requested some ice at the front desk, I also mentioned the issue with the odor. Upon opening the door to check, a staff member confirmed, "It does have an ethnic scent." They immediately offered to prepare another room for me and arranged it on the same floor within about 10 minutes. I was worried about whether I'd be able to sleep with that smell lingering but was relieved after being moved to a new room where I slept soundly that night. With inbound tourism increasing recently and some guests wearing strong perfumes, it must be challenging for accommodations to manage odors. Thanks to the front desk staff's prompt response this time, I created another wonderful memory in Matsumoto. Thank you very much! I look forward to staying again next year!

    Friendly Hotel

    We were able to park our car upon arrival before noon and leisurely enjoy sightseeing in Matsumoto. The Room was spacious and felt clean. Additionally, we enjoyed a relaxed and delicious breakfast. We are very satisfied.

    I reserved a non-smoking room, but it smelled of cigarettes, which bothered me and made it difficult to sleep. The shower curtain in the bathroom had a particularly strong odor.

    I had a very positive impression when I stayed last year, so I stayed again this year during the same period. However, it did not leave the same impression as last year. In particular, the female staff at the breakfast venue did not greet us at all. Additionally, issues with the coffee machine were ignored. Perhaps my expectations for service were too high. It was disappointing given that it is such a lovely hotel in the city.
