    One-night trip for three people

    The three of us stayed for one night with my 90-year-old mother. They helped us celebrate her 90th birthday. We stayed in a Room with an open-air bath at the observatory, and we were very satisfied with the hospitality. My mother also said it was a wonderful trip. We would love to stay again. Thank you very much.

    A place to celebrate, and also to hold a memorial gathering.

    I stayed for one night on the anniversary of my father’s passing. The hospitality was wonderful from check-in to check-out, and when I brought a photo of my father to breakfast, they prepared an offering meal for him. We were deeply moved and thanked them many times. The Room was Sara 507. It was a spacious Japanese-Western style Room. They told us we could freely drink everything in the refrigerator, which felt like a nice bonus. The chef in charge of the teppanyaki dinner and the chef in charge of the Western-style breakfast were both excellent. For dinner, they even served items not listed on the menu, and we left completely satisfied. From afternoon onward, there are various services depending on the time, so you can really enjoy yourself just within the Accommodation. I’m sure my father in heaven was happy as well. Thank you very much.

    The best.

    Relax in an Onsen in the mountains while gazing out at the sea. This location was simply unbeatable. And above all, the food was truly delicious! This time we enjoyed a French dinner. French cuisine at an Onsen Accommodation—more satisfying than we ever imagined. In the morning, it was a complete change to Japanese breakfast. The views, the Onsen, and the food—everything was exceptional. It was a luxurious time that left both our hearts and stomachs full.

    We stayed here to celebrate a 70th birthday.

    We arrived around 2:30 and enjoyed crepes and tea. It was a hot day and we were thirsty, so it was delicious in a cool place. At dinner, to celebrate the 70th birthday, celebratory sake and a ceremonial ball were prepared, and they also took photos for us. As a Diamond Member benefit, we received a bottle of wine and three chef’s recommendations as well, and we were completely full. The sun rose directly in front of our Room with a wonderful view, though it was a bit hot. Everyone was kind, and we had a very pleasant stay. The bath was slightly hot, so it would have been nice to have a regular electric fan.

    A five-star Accommodation—except for one specific front desk staff member.

    The stay itself was truly wonderful, and many aspects—meals, the Onsen, and service—were 5-star. However, the only major disappointment was the attitude of an older female front desk staff member (glasses, Ms. M). I have never felt this uncomfortable at an Accommodation before, so I am posting this in hopes of improvement. First, about the Shuttle Service: Although departure was scheduled for 15:00, we were kept waiting for a long time in the scorching heat. We were not allowed to wait inside the vehicle and had to stand outside with our luggage. We eventually departed around 15:15; I do not know whether they were waiting for other guests. What surprised me most was that there wasn’t even a single “Thank you for waiting.” It felt unacceptable for anyone working in hospitality. More disappointing than anything was the customer service from the older female front desk staff member (glasses, Ms. M). Right after check-in began, she said, “You have selected a slightly smaller Room,” even though we never asked for such a comment. Is it really necessary to speak that way to guests who are excited about their stay? Also, despite informing them at Reservation that it was my daughter’s birthday, she said something like, “I’m not sure whose birthday it is, but here is your Discount Coupon,” which shocked me. Shouldn’t it start with “Happy Birthday”? Even though the Shuttle Service delay was on the Accommodation’s side, while we were being escorted to our Room we were told in an odd manner: “We don’t have time now, so please have your welcome pancakes first.” We are not the reason there was no time. She kindly offered to take photos at first; however when returning my smartphone she handed it back as if tossing it with one hand—I was very surprised. Although we had already been told at check-in that dinner would be from 18:30 (and she had just handled our check-in), while we were waiting for transportation to Kuronegaiwa Onsen she suddenly came over and demanded in a strong tone: “What time is your dinner?!” I was astonished both by her tone and by her failure to confirm what had just been checked. In addition, with the back-of-house door behind reception left open—even in front of guests—staff spoke loudly among themselves about work matters and used overly casual language on phone calls. This felt extremely disappointing for what is positioned as a luxury Accommodation. All other staff members were truly wonderful. The Shuttle Service to Kuronegaiwa Onsen was great; welcome pancakes and drinks were excellent; and the courtyard atmosphere was fantastic. In the lounge you can choose your favorite teacup—a lovely touch—and even the sound design around the open-air bath area was impressive. The restaurant team’s hospitality was outstanding as well—and soaking in free-flowing natural hot spring water from its source was simply amazing.

    At the very end

    This is an Accommodation you can visit anytime. When we stayed last year, there was an attendant unlike any we had encountered before, which surprised us, so we mentioned it in the questionnaire. We were impressed by the prompt follow-up, including a letter of apology. This time, everything—from the pick-up at the station to check-in, guidance to our Room, and service at the restaurant for both breakfast and dinner—was simply excellent. As for the bath, although water is added to protect the piping, we thoroughly enjoyed free-flowing hot spring water with no circulation or disinfection. Both dinner and breakfast were delicious. My wife and I even said to each other, “Last year was surprising, but this time was great,” and we wrote that in the Accommodation’s questionnaire as well. We sealed it and headed to check-out. There were two staff members at the desk: one was assisting another guest, while a man in a suit was flipping through documents. We stood waiting for a while (with staff seated and guests standing), but it looked like it would take some time. So I told the man in the suit that we were checking out (given the time of day, most people would be checking out). He told us to sit and wait. In the end, another staff member handled our check-out after some waiting. The man in a suit may have been someone senior within the Accommodation, but he did not assist guests or even say “thank you.” If he needed to do paperwork such as flipping through documents without attending to guests, I think he should do so in an office or another space out of sight rather than where guests can see him. There was no way to ask for our submitted questionnaire back to rewrite it; we simply proceeded to be driven to the station. Because of just one person’s behavior at the very end, our overall impression unfortunately declined.

    Regret

    When I arrived to stay that day, I found that duplicate Reservations had been made on IKYU and Yahoo. I was told there were two Reservations on IKYU, and I was asked to cancel one. After I canceled it, the coupons and discounts from the original booking were not applied, and I was charged a high Cancellation Fee. I can’t help wondering if something could have been done differently—I’m more upset than anything.

    Heartwarming hospitality

    We visited as a group of three, bringing my mother, who has recently become weaker in her legs, to celebrate my husband’s birthday. When we entered the Room, you brought us a chair with longer legs to make sitting down and standing up easier. At dinner, not only was the food wonderful, but you also sang a birthday song for us and even made a rose from a napkin—was it magic? At breakfast, the chef added extra flavor to the meal with enjoyable conversation. As we were leaving, the gentleman who told us the story of the crane at the main entrance—thank you for your wonderful hospitality throughout dinner and beyond. Chef Aodake! Next time I will make a Reservation for teppanyaki dinner. The senior attendant was also extremely kind to us. Thank you very much.

    Mistake...

    This was my second stay. At check-in, my name, Room number, and the celebration details were incorrect. The staff member only corrected the Room number. Also, the shower water pressure was weak, so I asked for an adjustment, but was told it could be handled by switching the showerhead setting. After using it, the water flow did not change, and I was dissatisfied because it didn’t feel like I could rinse properly. My first stay left a great impression and that’s why I returned, but this time was disappointing.

    Wonderful Accommodation

    I stay at various Accommodations, and this one truly felt like a great Accommodation. Thoughtful touches from the Accommodation could be felt throughout—ranging from small gestures to things that genuinely impressed me. I would like to stay in the same Room again. Some of the baths had great views, but they were not as large as other Accommodations I’ve stayed at. The lounge area was not very spacious either, and you have to use stairs to reach the baths, which worried me at first—but the steps were low, so it was fine. It was also my first time trying teppanyaki. I wanted to arrive by 3:30 p.m. to have pancakes, so I managed to make it in time. It became a wonderful one-night, two-day trip. The staff were also wonderful. I plan to Reserve again someday.

    The best of both a Hotel and an Onsen Ryokan

    Highly recommended for anyone celebrating a special occasion! It was my companion’s first time at this Accommodation, and they were amazed by all the thoughtful hospitality. The only downside was that the stairs to the large public bath were a bit tough. Since the bath in the Room is also an Onsen, relaxing and enjoying your time in the Room is a great option too. This is an Accommodation I’d love to visit again anytime, in any season.

    A Trip to Izu for the First Time in Two Years

    We stayed at this Accommodation on our first trip to Izu in two years. We already knew from the Reviews that it was highly regarded, but the Onsen, the meals, and the thoughtful hospitality of all the staff exceeded our expectations. The Onsen must have suited her particularly well—my wife, who usually only bathes once, went in several times. For dinner we chose the French kaiseki course; it made wonderful use of local ingredients and was truly delicious. The splendid alfonsino was excellent both as sashimi and steamed wrapped in carta fata. The Amagi venison roti was also a memorable dish that really captured the local character. We don’t usually have a regular place we return to, but this was such a comfortable Accommodation that we’d love to stay again and again. To everyone on the team—especially the Shuttle Service driver—thank you very much for taking such good care of us.

    Celebration Accommodation

    We were treated to a variety of thoughtful celebratory touches that truly lived up to the title. The hot water was pleasantly lukewarm—perfect for relaxing and leisurely gazing at the sea—but the Accommodation had planned so many services and activities that we found ourselves moving around quite a bit to enjoy them all (laugh). It was so full of experiences that we wondered if it was really okay to receive this much. The pancake afternoon tea at check-in was delicious. We chose the French course for dinner, and it was an enjoyable Japanese-Western fusion. Japanese cuisine is something you can have at any Ryokan, so next time we’ll be torn between teppanyaki and French.

    Hospitality Expert

    I visited for my birthday. It started with pancakes, then sparkling wine on the terrace while admiring the hydrangeas, and after the Onsen, a draft beer and tokoroten. I was already very satisfied, but dinner at the teppanyaki restaurant was outstanding. The spiny lobster, abalone, and sirloin practically melted in my mouth. Even after dinner there was plenty more—delicious cocktails in the cocktail lounge, followed by late-night sweets while reading magazines. This time I indulged and chose a Plan that included eel for lunch the next day. The hospitality was beyond anything I could imagine—I went home more than 1 kg heavier.

    It was an Accommodation with warm hospitality.

    We stayed here for a family trip. My mother has difficulty walking, and we truly appreciated the thoughtful assistance—from guidance to our Room and even the futon bedding. Although it is a historic Accommodation, it specializes in attentive care and service, allowing us to relax as if we were at home. It’s rare to find an Accommodation where even the housekeeping staff and those who prepare the futons provide such excellent hospitality. Since the baths are surrounded by nature, there were some insects, but my family said they handled it promptly. The hot spring water felt gentle and very pleasant. The meals were carefully crafted, and everything was both beautiful to look at and delicious. Next time, I’d like to try a different course as well. Because we arrived late, we couldn’t experience all of the services, so next time we’d like to arrive earlier. They saw us off until our car was out of sight—it was a wonderful Accommodation that left us feeling great. Thank you for taking such good care of us. Next time I’d love to visit with friends or my partner as well.

    Good Hotel

    We stayed with two families. The weather was great, and we were lucky to have a clear view of Oshima. The Room had tatami flooring, and there were a few uneven spots, but the washroom was spacious and easy to use. However, we felt it would have been more comfortable if it were a little higher. Dinner was French-style and delicious. Although the birthday was still a month away, they prepared a surprise celebration that left us with lasting memories.

    About twice a month, I stay at various Accommodations. Despite the small staff, I felt their hospitality in many situations and returned home completely satisfied.     We stayed here for an alumni reunion with a close-knit group.

    We made a Reservation at this Accommodation to enjoy the Onsen with close friends and eat great food. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly welcomed; our car was valet-parked, and we checked in smoothly while enjoying a welcome drink. We arrived a little late but just made it in time for the teppanyaki afternoon service. Dinner was teppanyaki, and as a Diamond member perk we received a complimentary bottle of wine; everything was delicious, and we also enjoyed some beer. For the main course you can choose from sirloin, filet, or venison game meat, and thanks to the chef’s consideration it was also possible to choose two half portions. I chose sirloin, while the other three were happy with a half-and-half option including venison. The baths switch between men and women in the morning and evening; I preferred Aomi (up a short flight of stairs). There are four open-air baths with wonderful views, and when I went in early in the morning I heard Japanese bush warblers singing—it truly made me feel grateful to be alive. We booked two Rooms for four people (two per Room), so it was spacious and perfect. The staff were well trained, and we had an excellent stay with no complaints. This is an Accommodation I would happily return to. Next time, I plan to come with my wife.

    For a special anniversary.

    We stayed to celebrate a special occasion. We thoroughly enjoyed the teppanyaki, which is rare for a Ryokan, and had a wonderful time.     Celebrating My Husband’s Birthday

    This was my first visit. Since it was for a birthday celebration, I splurged and made a Reservation for what seemed to be the best Room with a private Onsen. I was really looking forward to the in-Room Onsen, but the water was far too hot—at times the thermometer showed 60°C. When I turned off the hot spring tap to let it cool and checked later, the water level had dropped to about half. I didn’t want to add cold water because I thought it would dilute the spring source, but when I refilled it, it was still too hot to use. It was very disappointing. In that case, I should have booked one of the more affordable Rooms instead. Also, at dinner, the bonito in the amuse had a very strong fishy smell. Still, I truly appreciated your kind birthday celebration for me.

    The bath and meals are excellent.

    Set slightly above the coast and facing the national highway, it’s an outstanding location. The view of Sagami Bay and Oshima from the open-air bath is wonderful. The Onsen has an abundant flow, with just the right water quality and temperature for a truly relaxing soak. Dinner was Japanese-style French cuisine; each dish made careful use of local ingredients and was thoughtfully prepared—everything was excellent. Within the course, seafood included spiny lobster, and there were several meat options; I chose Izu roast pork. I took about two hours to enjoy it at a leisurely pace and finished every bite. The reception, dining, and other staff were very pleasant and attentive. This Accommodation is very good overall, but one drawback is the very long staircase up and down to the large public bath—understandable given the building’s layout.

    We were very satisfied with the warm hospitality at this Onsen Accommodation!

    Check-in was a relaxing experience in the lounge, where we were seated comfortably while the staff explained the complimentary hospitality services and helped us choose and make Reservations for dinner and breakfast. We started with afternoon tea—pancakes and soft-serve ice cream—which immediately set an elegant mood. After enjoying the Onsen, we visited the post-bath lounge for beer and ice pops, then before dinner there were drinks and alcohol served on the terrace or in the lobby. In the evening, there were sweets and nightcaps as well. We also appreciated the Shuttle Service to Kuroneiwa Bath. It’s only about a 5-minute walk, but since it’s uphill, it was very helpful. As a public open-air bath by the sea, it was amazing—the powerful sound of waves crashing against the rocks and the openness of the ocean view were unforgettable. Most impressive of all was dinner at teppanyaki. We enjoyed watching everything cooked right in front of us while chatting with the chef. This trip was also to celebrate our wedding anniversary, so we received wine service, special dishes, and photos—making it a truly memorable stay. It really lived up to its reputation as an Accommodation known for celebrations (Kissho Caren).
