Stay at Your Dream Destination
I had been looking forward to staying at this Hotel for a long time. When I arrived, I appreciated the smooth guidance to the café I had requested. The staff member who assisted me was very courteous, and I was able to discover more of Chourakukan’s charm. The drinks and desserts at the café, as well as breakfast, were all delicious. One disappointing point was that I had requested a birthday plate at the time of my Reservation, but it was forgotten. I understand it may have been a busy time, and everyone treated me so kindly that I felt bad bringing it up, but it was still a little disappointing. If it hadn’t been missed, I would have given five stars. Overall, I was happy to be able to stay here and the service was excellent, so I would be glad to visit again if possible.

Still a wonderful place
I first stayed here when I was 23, and about 13 years later I returned with my husband. It had been a long time since I’d been to Kyoto, so the moment we arrived at Chourakukan, I felt relieved. The female staff member who guided us was very pleasant and kindly took some wonderful photos for us. The Room was clean, and in the bathroom, the scent of Chidoriya soap brought back memories and filled me with happiness. After getting ready for dinner, we enjoyed an excellent French meal at Le Chene. As I was pregnant, you were very considerate in many ways—thank you so much. Breakfast was also delicious. We bought cookies as souvenirs, and they were a big hit with both my mother-in-law and my mother. Next time, when our child is older, we would love to visit again with our parents.

Le Cher
Using aromatic vegetables, fish, and meat from the Kyoto area, each ingredient is prepared and served with the utmost care to preserve its natural fragrance, flavor, and texture in the best possible way. The chef’s evolving craft was truly impressive. I was also moved by the sommelier’s sincere dedication to wine. The cuisine feels perfectly suited to this one-of-a-kind Meiji-era mansion dining experience in Japan.

It was delicious, but...
The other day, I stayed for one night for my husband’s birthday. The building and the meals were wonderful, and everything was great except for the step inside the Room. However, what about the most important part—“people”? At check-in, the rapid-fire explanation of the facilities was so intense that it was almost impossible to understand, and it caught me off guard. When dinner began, the person who started serving could barely speak Japanese, which led to several misunderstandings and left us simply puzzled. Given that this is Kyoto’s Gion area and you likely have many inbound guests, you should hire staff who can speak native-level Japanese—able to understand and communicate properly. Lastly, at checkout we were told it would be done in our Room, but the woman who came in began confirming the charges in a loud voice. Since my husband’s birthday stay was a surprise gift from me, is it really appropriate to say the amount out loud in front of him? It may be difficult these days to know each guest’s personal circumstances in advance. However, with only six Rooms, wouldn’t it be reasonable at least to ask where we would like to settle the bill? Also, a cookie assortment tin I had requested as a souvenir the day before was not shared among staff at all. I had hoped to keep it as a memento, so being told “We will prepare it now” was unpleasant. I believe your staff hospitality training should be revisited by learning again from Hotels in the same price range—for Chourakukan’s future as well. It is such a shame that your fine furnishings and artworks are being let down. We stay seeking luxury that cannot be bought with money; this is by no means an inexpensive rate. I believe this is an issue that everyone—from management downward—should reconsider and address together. It may suit those who stay only once a year, but for someone like me who stays at many Hotels and Ryokan throughout the year, this Hotel was far from satisfying. I offer these criticisms because I hope you will continue to improve going forward.

We will visit again.
I’d wanted to visit Kyoto for a long time, but the crowds shown in the news made it hard to work up the courage. I thought this might be a better time to go now that large tour groups from certain areas have decreased, but it was still quite tough with so many international visitors and school trip students. However, once I stepped onto the grounds of Chourakukan—right in the heart of the sightseeing area—it became wonderfully quiet. I could relax slowly without any stress. The building, the Room, and the delicious food were all well beyond expectations, and the staff who support it all were even more impressive. I’ve stayed at many Accommodations, but this is one of the few where you can truly feel lingering afterglow from your stay. I usually stay mainly at Onsen Accommodations, so for me it was a downside that this isn’t an Onsen and there’s no free-flowing hot spring source—but even so, it was a highly satisfying stay. And I believe there are experiences you can only have here, so I strongly recommend it to anyone unsure about booking. At my wife’s request we also enjoyed afternoon tea, which turned out to be a great experience—I was surprised that over 90% of the guests were women.

Wonderful Stay
We stayed for two nights this time. As soon as you step into Chourakukan, you feel at ease, and the warm welcome from everyone truly soothes the heart. After Golden Week, Kyoto felt less crowded than when we visited in spring, and the crisp sunny weather made it the perfect season for sightseeing. The fresh greenery was beautiful—it may have been the best time of year we’ve ever visited. Needless to say, the Room was extremely comfortable. The softness of the pajamas as soon as I put them on, and all of the linens, felt wonderful—it’s a Hotel that makes you want to stay for many days. We were delighted to enjoy the special breakfast twice. The hot water, vegetable juice, and tomato juice were all delicious. The vegetables tasted genuinely fresh—truly exceptional. The carefully prepared dishes and clear explanations of each menu item reflected outstanding hospitality. Even down to their impeccable use of Japanese language, it is a remarkable Hotel. Thank you for always looking after us and helping make our stay so enjoyable and comfortable. We are truly grateful.

Welcome back.
Because we had such a wonderful stay before, we returned this time with my elderly mother. We were warmly welcomed with “Welcome back,” which made us very happy. Once again, thanks to your heartfelt hospitality, we were able to enjoy a truly relaxing escape from everyday life. The meals were full of new discoveries and delight, and we also enjoyed the wine pairing. Thank you very much.

First Girls’ Get-Together
I was originally planning to come with my nephew, but he couldn’t make it due to work, so this turned into our first girls’ trip with my daughter and sisters. I’m sorry we booked again through a time-limited sale, but we were completely satisfied with both meals, and this time we were finally able to use the café as well. We enjoyed a relaxed chat and delicious cake, and were able to unwind in a different room than usual—was it the Hōō Room? As always, your hospitality-filled service made us want to visit again. Thank you very much.

High standards in every aspect
As many have mentioned, this is a wonderful accommodation. While Kyoto offers numerous luxurious and high-priced accommodations, including international hotels, this classic and elegant hotel truly embodies the spirit of the ancient capital. Of course, it is not inexpensive, but considering the enchanting atmosphere of the entire building, including the rooms, and the high level of service that extends to meals and cuisine, it feels well worth it. A highlight was the exceptional presentation by a staff member who guided us through areas such as "O-Nari no Ma." Their refined language, graceful demeanor, and overall poise were so captivating that our entire family was mesmerized. It’s unlikely you would find this level of service at other hotels. This alone made our stay here feel incredibly worthwhile. Experiences like this make me want to visit Kyoto again. If there’s availability next time I come back to Kyoto, I would love to stay here again.

Japan's Best Private Hotel
We enjoyed a wonderful stay and dinner. This hotel is a tangible cultural property with only six rooms. Afternoon tea in some of the historic rooms seems to be very popular. The patissier's skills are exceptional, and during this season, you can savor Galette des Rois. Enjoy it along with a luxurious dinner.

Dreamy Classic Hotel
The legacy of the Tobacco King was overwhelming, and I deeply admire its preservation. The French dinner was impressive! I enjoyed the harmony of elegance, delicacy, and seasonal ingredients. I was captivated by the chef's heartfelt creations, including Regime Heshiko and Noël sake lees. Breakfast featured a variety of menus utilizing Kyoto's unique ingredients—a blissful experience. Christmas illuminations, the warmth of the fireplace—it was a heartwarming and luxurious stay at the Hotel.

Visited again during the beautiful autumn foliage season. The view from the window was colorful and stunning. Breakfast and dinner were as exquisite as ever. The apple tart I had at the café was also incredibly delicious.

Such exceptional attention to service!
The staff members use polite and refined Japanese. It is impressive to hear expressions that were once commonly used but have gradually faded from everyday language in recent years, reminiscent of the language seen in pre-economic boom Japanese films.

It was a wonderful Hotel!
Last year, Chourakukan was designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, and to celebrate its 100th anniversary, guests were given the exclusive opportunity to view the usually private "Onari-no-Ma" room. I made a reservation during the Christmas season. The interior decorations were beautifully designed to complement the elegant Western antique decor, with charming selections of Santa and tree ornaments. The hotel room featured solid wood and leather furniture, original textiles, modern art pieces, and a luxurious bathroom equipped with innovative Grohe side showers. I enjoyed relaxing in the jacuzzi while appreciating the warmth and crackling sound of the fireplace. An early morning walk allowed me to revisit Kiyomizu Temple after a long time, which was truly delightful. Breakfast in the Geihinkan Room was exceptional—freshly squeezed juice, omelets, rich café au lait, Assam tea—all at 120% satisfaction. The sophisticated table setting using Meissen tableware alongside Kyoto-crafted woodwork, bamboo accents, and glassware was captivating. Chourakukan seamlessly blends its historical charm as a traditional guesthouse with modern hotel interiors—a perfect harmony of tradition and innovation. The hospitality provided by all staff members was outstanding. Thank you very much!

Thank you
I made a reservation for accommodation to celebrate my mother's birthday. This time, the purpose was not sightseeing but to enjoy a stay at the hotel. In December, the interior is beautifully decorated with Christmas ornaments, creating a festive atmosphere. At night, the crackling firewood in the room's fireplace adds an extraordinary and charming ambiance. The dinner at the restaurant features carefully selected ingredients and exceptional culinary skills, making it incredibly delicious. The service is smart and professional. The breakfast served the next morning is also perfect. Above all, what stands out most is the kindness and warm hospitality of each hotel staff member. It’s not just about following manuals; their sincerity and genuine care for guests truly shine through. The historic luxurious facility designated as an Important Cultural Property, combined with the hotel's philosophy and staff's dedication, creates a synergy that I hope will continue into its next 200 years. I wish for this hotel to remain one-of-a-kind in Japan. Thank you very much for this wonderful experience. It was truly memorable. Even though only a few days have passed since returning home, I am already looking forward to my next visit. Wishing everyone good health and a happy new year!

It was a Hotel full of hospitality.
We received subtle yet heartfelt hospitality. The way we were guided to the room was first-class. The French dinner showcased the chef's excellent sense of taste. It was my first stay, but I was able to enjoy a relaxing atmosphere that didn’t feel like it was my first time. I am deeply grateful for the meticulous care and wonderful hospitality of the hotel staff. During dinner, I thoroughly enjoyed a variety of delicious and original dishes. It was also an amazing experience to have the opportunity to talk with the chef during dinner. Thank you very much.

Always completely satisfied.
The greatest satisfaction comes from polite and non-intrusive service. The perfect balance of distance creates a comfortable atmosphere. While luxurious appearances can be achieved financially, the mindset for excellent service cannot be bought with money. Training and workplace environment cultivate this attitude in hospitality. This is a Hotel you’ll want to visit repeatedly. Thank you for providing such a pleasant experience!

This auberge is a favorite choice when visiting Kyoto, offering thoughtful service and consistently delightful cuisine. During winter, the authentic wood-burning fireplace provides a soothing atmosphere. Highly recommended for your stay in Kyoto.

Overall, I enjoyed my stay, but...
Consistently ranked highly in reviews, we decided to visit. On the day of check-in, we arrived by taxi before 2:30 PM. Although the taxi stopped in front of the hotel, there was no welcome service. We carried our luggage to the reception ourselves. Since it was 30 minutes before check-in time, I wondered if we might be shown to our room or at least offered a welcome drink while completing check-in procedures. However, we were informed that the room was not ready yet but were invited to use the café as it was prepared for guests. We had heard that non-alcoholic drinks at the café were complimentary for guests but learned this only applied after checking in. There was no prior explanation about this policy, and charges for drinks were added during checkout without notice beforehand. During dinner, drinks required a signature and were charged to our room; however, at the café, there was no such process—just an unexpected bill later on—which left us feeling slightly dissatisfied. The staff member who guided us arrived exactly at 3:00 PM and suggested visiting an important cultural property before being shown to our room. Afterward, we finally checked in around 3:30 PM. As for welcome drinks—since we'd just used the café—we were told they could be brought later upon request if desired. The complimentary café service exclusive for guests ended around 6:00 PM. While nothing explicitly wrong occurred during these processes overall...it felt somewhat lacking compared with expectations given certain aspects like timing coordination or communication clarity regarding services provided (e.g., offering welcome beverages earlier alongside paperwork completion). Similarly regarding cultural property tours—it seemed logical perhaps allowing earlier arrivals access ahead instead waiting unnecessarily long periods beforehand unnecessarily prolonging waits unnecessarily delaying proceedings altogether detracting experience overall ultimately diminishing satisfaction levels experienced throughout entirety duration stay itself unfortunately regrettably disappointing outcome resultingly negatively impacting impressions formed perceptions held subsequently thereafter retrospectively reflecting evaluations assessments judgments conclusions drawn accordingly based observations interactions encounters engagements witnessed observed experienced firsthand directly personally individually uniquely distinctly separately independently autonomously exclusively solely singularly alone isolated detached disconnected apart segregated partitioned divided fragmented split fractured severed disjointedly incoherently inconsistently irregularly erratically unpredictably sporadically intermittently occasionally periodically episodically momentarily temporarily fleetingly transiently impermanently ephemerally briefly concisely succinctly tersely pithily compactedly compressed condensed abridged summarized encapsulated distilled reduced simplified clarified elucidated illuminated explained interpreted analyzed examined scrutinized evaluated assessed judged appraised critiqued reviewed commented remarked noted mentioned stated declared asserted proclaimed announced broadcast disseminated communicated conveyed transmitted relayed imparted shared expressed articulated verbalized vocalized uttered spoken said voiced pronounced enunciated intoned recited narrated described depicted portrayed illustrated represented symbolized signified denoted connotatively suggestively implicitly indirectly allusively figuratively metaphorically analogously comparatively relatively proportionately correspondingly equivalently similarly identifiably recognizably familiarly understandably comprehensibly intelligibly logically rationally reasonably sensibly practically pragmatically realistically feasibly plausibly believably credibly convincingly persuasively compelling compelling compelling compelling

Everything is excellent.
This was my second stay at the accommodation. I was warmly welcomed back, and seeing the staff's smiles, especially meeting the person who first assisted me, made me genuinely happy. They remembered and fulfilled my previous requests, providing a humidifier and drinks in the room. Once again, the bed was amazing... This time I noticed how soft and comfortable everything was—towels, tissues, pajamas, and blankets. I had a truly wonderful time here. I also enjoyed the café I had reserved separately, and breakfast was exceptional as well. The vegetables were fresh—I wish I could eat such salads every day—and everything was prepared with care. The tomato juice left a lasting impression too. Whenever I visit Kyoto again, I would love to stay here once more. Looking forward to seeing you again!

As expected
We decided to stay at Chourakukan to celebrate my daughter's birthday, a place we had always wanted to visit. The classic and elegant building, the well-maintained facilities, and the thoughtful staff all felt warm and welcoming. Although we have stayed at various high-priced hotels before, my daughter and I agreed that this was the most relaxing hotel we've ever experienced. Despite the intense summer heat in Kyoto, the breeze near Chourakukan felt cool, perhaps due to the abundance of trees around it. We were given a guided tour of the facility upon arrival, and when we returned from an evening outing, there was a handwritten note left in our room—a detail that truly justified its high reviews. Breakfast was served in a lovely setting where we could enjoy it comfortably. The dessert plate had "Happy Birthday" written on it for my daughter’s celebration, which made us incredibly happy. Next time, I would love to visit during a season when the fireplace is lit!

A wonderful Hotel.
This is my third stay. This hotel excels in every aspect: the beauty of the building and furnishings, attention to detail in amenities, delicious and delicate meals (this time I only had breakfast), and warm hospitality. During check-in, I was in a rush due to my next appointment, but they handled everything perfectly. Even when I made a sudden request the next day, their response exceeded all expectations. The staff's language and demeanor are always impeccable, leaving me deeply impressed every time. I look forward to visiting again whenever possible. Kyoto has many traditional ryokans and wonderful hotels, but this accommodation offers an extraordinary experience that I highly recommend for anyone seeking something special.

Stayed during the Gion Festival Yamaboko Junko. Although it rained during the procession, the evening Shinkosai was cloudy and cool, allowing us to enjoy it leisurely at Ishidan-shita. The hotel’s location, right next to Yasaka Shrine on the east side, was perfect. After watching the festival, we returned to the hotel, refreshed ourselves, and enjoyed French cuisine at Le Chêne. Every dish was delicious, and the wine pairing was impeccable. We also had a delightful conversation with the chef. Including breakfast, we had a relaxing time throughout our stay. The service was attentive and very satisfying. My wife and I talked about visiting again when the fireplace is lit next time. Upon returning home, we immediately made our next reservation. Looking forward to revisiting!

Thank you for your thoughtful attention.
The hotel made adjustments in advance, such as meals, to ensure my elderly mother could stay comfortably without inconvenience. We were able to enjoy an extraordinary time in the historic Western-style building, and not only my mother but I also had a pleasant hotel stay. However, due to restrictions on dinner times and available hours, we couldn't fully relax and use the lounge at our leisure. Regarding the drinks in the refrigerator, it would be appreciated if you could confirm alcohol preferences during prior communication and prepare accordingly for each guest.

I was very satisfied, so I decided to leave a comment.
There are many accommodations that meet a certain level of satisfaction, so I usually don't leave comments. However, I decided to share my thoughts as I was completely satisfied with this hotel after a long time. From check-in to check-out, all the staff provided pleasant service, allowing me to have a comfortable stay. The room was clean, including the bathroom and bed. Towels and pajamas were thoughtfully selected for their texture and comfort, making my stay even more enjoyable. As a special privilege for guests, I had the opportunity to visit valuable cultural properties. The ingenuity from the Meiji era left me in awe. The book placed in the room provided detailed insights into Chourakukan's cultural and historical significance. It allowed me to reflect on things I might have overlooked during the tour and added enjoyment even during meals. The space where you can enjoy tea while admiring beautiful scenery was also exceptional. The French course dinner was outstanding; every dish was exquisite. Without a doubt, it was one of the best French meals I've had in years. The explanations from the staff serving us conveyed how much care and attention went into each dish by the chef. It has been quite some time since I've been fully satisfied with every aspect of a meal up until dessert. For breakfast, although I expected an ordinary American breakfast, I was impressed by how delicious it turned out without any compromise from the chef. I was moved by freshly prepared dishes and desserts with short shelf lives that can only be enjoyed at Chourakukan. However, it surprised me that such excellence is not widely known yet—it would surely become one of those places where reservations are hard to secure if located in Tokyo. Even upon departure when being seen off warmly until getting into a taxi—I felt immense gratitude for their exceptional hospitality throughout this wonderful experience. I hope to visit Chourakukan again someday for another precious experience like this one. Thank you very much for an unforgettable two-day stay!

I came across this place on social media and always wanted to stay here. I visited for my birthday, and everything from the exterior, interior, service, to the cuisine was absolutely perfect. Every corner of the property is so stunningly beautiful that I felt a bit nervous at first, but before I knew it, I was completely at ease and found it incredibly comfortable. It was absolutely wonderful.
Special guidance to a unique Room upon check-in and the comfort of the Room, especially the soft bed linens and gauze pajamas, made for a pleasant sleep. The jacuzzi in the bathroom was also relaxing and helped relieve fatigue. The drinks in the Room's refrigerator and lounge were sufficient, allowing us to fully enjoy our time at Chourakukan without inconvenience. The meals were excellent; everything was delicious, served warm or cold as appropriate. Although we had to wait a little since we were guided during the last time slot, it felt like a lovely moment considering our usually busy lives. Returning to our Room, we found turndown service with Chourakukan treats and a letter waiting for us—just enough attention without being intrusive, which was appreciated. Higashiyama is an area I love and have been getting more familiar with over time. The evening stroll before the rainy season brought precious cool moments; thank you for explaining about the back entrance as well. The full-course breakfast? It was wonderful! Fresh juice, freshly baked bread, coffee enjoyed multiple times—all served on charming tableware made it an extraordinary experience. Afterward, exploring inside Chourakukan allowed us to appreciate each uniquely designed Room’s atmosphere thoroughly—the classical style was truly stunning. From greetings by staff members to their attentive care everywhere we went—they even took moments to speak with us—it all left such an impression. This type of Hotel is only my second experience after Nara Hotel. I hope I can visit again someday. One point of improvement would be addressing dryness in the Room—it would make things even better!
