The location and meals are excellent.

This Accommodation is built to jut out over the cliffs of the Iya Valley, and the view from the bath in your Room is spectacular. Meals are served in a private dining room with an irori hearth, where you can enjoy skewered grilled river fish and vegetables, as well as hot pot dishes. The building itself does not feel luxurious, but I think the bold choice to forgo a large public bath and instead offer private-room dining is distinctive and appealing. I couldn’t book a bed Room because it was fully booked, and I strained my lower back a bit in a Japanese-style Room, so if all Rooms were changed to beds while keeping tatami flooring, I would like to visit again. Because the Onsen switch and the temperature control handle are far apart, it was difficult to adjust the water temperature, so I would like to see improvements in that area as well.

A well-known Accommodation famous for Iya soba.

Iya Bijin is an Accommodation famous for soba. I had carelessly forgotten this, and since my son has a severe buckwheat allergy, we made a last-minute request to remove all foods related to soba. During our stay, they took great care with the meals, and both dinner and breakfast were wonderful—such as ayu sashimi and dekomawashi—and my son ate so much it surprised even us. Of course, he had no allergic symptoms at all. Thank you very much.

Iya Valley is the secret to beauty.

○Dinner →The meal was great and really let us enjoy Iya. In particular: (1) sweetfish sashimi and (2) wild boar hot pot. ○Breakfast →The miso was delicious. In particular, the Hirara-yaki was excellent. ○Service →The local specialty, Iya soba, was served at dinner, but we were too full to eat it. When we asked if it could be served again as a late-night snack, they kindly agreed. The Iya soba we had later was also outstanding. The soba dipping sauce was especially appealing—perhaps because it wasn’t sweetened with mirin or sugar—so we could really enjoy the rich flavors of soy sauce and dried sardines. ○Onsen →We felt very relaxed and refreshed in the Onsen.

An Accommodation with impeccable timing and judgment

Warmly welcomed in the building next to a charming soba restaurant, I enjoyed Iya’s local culture and nature. Upon entering the Room, I immediately noticed the lush green view, the bath, and a massage chair. The bath was already filled so I could use it right away. They also explained how to use it and told me it takes 20 minutes to fill completely. I wanted to soak immediately, but since it was a season of strong sunlight, I waited until the sun slipped behind the mountains. The breeze was pleasant, and I relaxed in the Room. The next morning, I ran hot water for about 10 minutes and then kept it flowing as I bathed; the gentle sound of trickling water and the crisp air made it wonderfully quiet and atmospheric. The cuisine was refined local fare—perfected so that each dish tasted best at the moment you take your first bite. I enjoyed my meal slowly and peacefully in an irori (sunken hearth) dining Room. When I entered, salt-grilled river fish and “dekomawashi” were already skewered over the hearth, gently roasting. As I ate the first dishes while watching the irori right in front of me— “So this is how you place charcoal…” “The irori really warms you up…” “This is how far from the fire you set skewers…” —I found myself drifting into a world like old folk tales. It was such an enjoyable time. When they lifted the lid of the soba-rice porridge (zousui), its aroma rose beautifully, and its flavor on my palate was wonderful; I honestly thought, “I didn’t know zousui could be this delicious.” A bright, friendly staff member also adjusted one skewer’s angle midway while checking how it was cooking—and for that brief moment their gaze and hands looked like true craftsmanship. Both the dekomawashi and river fish were warm and perfectly plump. Every dish was timed impeccably; paired with sake, everything tasted excellent. Even though I felt completely full afterward, the soba at the end was so good that I thought, “I’m full—and yet it’s already gone.” By breakfast time the next morning my body felt refreshed and hungry again, so once more I truly enjoyed my meal. From check-in until seeing me off, I could feel their careful attention to timing in every detail. Thanks to that thoughtfulness, my stay was truly comfortable.

    This is my first stay.

The entrance, front desk, shop, hallways, and dining areas felt as good as the high IKYU Review ratings suggest (just my personal impression). Once inside the Room, it felt more like staying in a guesthouse. I would have appreciated a bit more of a premium feel. The meals were delicious, using locally sourced ingredients. I was able to experience something special that can only be found at this Ryokan. Thanks to the wonderful hospitality of all the staff, I had a very comfortable stay. Thank you very much.

    Excellent

The in-Room Onsen and the dinner served in a private dining room with an irori hearth were both outstanding. Everything was delicious—from dishes we don’t often get to try, such as dekomawashi, wild boar hot pot, and river fish sashimi, to the chef’s homemade pickles and the soba at the end. The portions were generous, and we were absolutely stuffed. The proprietress and all the staff were courteous, kind, and left a wonderful impression. This is an Accommodation we would love to stay at again if we have the chance. Thank you very much.

The view from the Room, the open-air bath, and the cuisine were all extremely satisfying—this was a wonderful Accommodation. The staff’s hospitality was kind and warm. I was able to relax both body and mind and felt truly refreshed. I would definitely like to visit again. Thank you very much.

    A Place to Truly Unwind

I’ve traveled from Osaka to Tokushima many times, but this was my first visit to Iya Onsen. I’m usually struggling through everyday life amid the noise of the city, so being surrounded by lush green mountains I never get to see, with the sound of the river and birdsong, was truly soothing—I thought, “What a wonderful place.” This time we stayed at Iya Bijin. Check-in was smooth, and we were escorted to our Room with a thorough explanation. In the semi-open-air bath attached to the Room, we could hear the river, birdsong, and feel the natural breeze—and the clear Onsen water was gentle on my skin and left it silky smooth. For dinner we chose a smaller portion with higher quality, but for a couple in our 50s it still felt like quite a lot. That said, every dish was excellent—starting with grilled fish over the irori hearth and other wonderful dishes made with local ingredients. The Awa beef shabu-shabu was outstanding. It was so delicious that we finished everything. Breakfast the next morning was also incredibly lavish. The rice was delicious too—I even had seconds. Throughout the Accommodation, every staff member greeted us politely when we passed by, and when we left they waved goodbye warmly—it made us very happy. We had such a comfortable two-day stay that we’d love to come again. Thank you very much.

Truly a gorge-side Accommodation—surrounded by nature and blissful.

If you come from a noisy city, this tranquility is truly soothing. The Accommodation blends seamlessly into nature, and the attentive service from the staff is impeccable. We especially enjoyed the local mountain cuisine, particularly the konnyaku—it was delicious. We were glad we rented a car.

A charming Ryokan where you can enjoy a bath while taking in views of the Iya Valley.

I stayed here during a temporary return to Japan. Dinner was served in a private Room with an irori hearth, and the dishes—such as salt-grilled amago trout—were delicious and full of atmosphere. There is no large public bath, only an open-air bath in the Room, but it was not an issue. It would have been nice to have coffee after the meal.

A luxurious private Onsen accommodation in a secluded paradise. Attention to detail at its finest.

A luxury onsen accommodation nestled in a secluded area. The room was a spacious Japanese-Western style, offering stunning views from the balcony. Thanks to the underfloor heating, it was warm and relaxing, though the toilet felt slightly chilly. The open-air hinoki bath on the balcony was exceptional, providing a truly luxurious experience of soaking while enjoying the breathtaking scenery of this hidden retreat. However, as it is a tatami room without chairs, it might be challenging for elderly foreign guests with weaker legs or backs. We stayed in the highest-grade room this time, which came at quite a high price. Still, with private dining around an irori hearth, exclusive onsen access, and warm and spacious accommodations overall satisfaction was high. That said, having only instant coffee in the room felt slightly disappointing for an accommodation of this class—drip coffee would have better reflected its prestige. Additionally, at this price range, having some complimentary drinks stocked in the refrigerator would enhance its appeal and elevate its status as a premium ryokan further. Overall, while there were minor points that could be improved upon during our stay at this highly attractive accommodation!

    Excellent!!

Advance phone support, the irori dining area, meals, staff service, photo opportunities, and of course the Onsen. From morning coffee service to a warm send-off... The beauty of the valley is undeniable, but it’s the heartfelt hospitality that makes us want to return again. Done! Thank you very much.

    Relaxation

The view from the hotel overlooking the valley was breathtaking. The room we stayed in had a ceramic bath and a cypress bath, allowing us to enjoy a luxurious private bath while admiring the scenery. As two women in our 60s, we found the meal portions and flavors to be truly delicious and just right. This is an accommodation we would love to visit again when seeking relaxation.

A warm Ryokan where you can enjoy local cuisine.

This Ryokan leaves a better impression as you prepare to leave than when you first arrive. Dinner features a variety of local dishes, served in an irori hearth setting that offers a unique and extraordinary dining experience. The staff are warm and friendly, providing heartfelt hospitality. We were able to spend our time entirely in the room without stepping out, which made for an incredibly relaxing stay. The open-air Onsen was exceptionally pleasant. At night, the gorge is subtly illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere; in the morning, mist envelops the area, making it so serene that you'll want to soak forever. The ambiance is truly outstanding. For those who wish to experience the charm of Iya and savor regional cuisine, this accommodation offers a perfect retreat from daily fatigue. As for the indoor bath, some may find it slightly worn or aged with visible damage or stains on areas like doors. However, since most guests seem satisfied with just using the open-air Onsen (we didn’t use it either), fewer people might opt for the indoor bath anyway. If future renovations are considered, removing the indoor bath and expanding the dressing area could make for an even more delightful and comfortable room experience overall.

Stunning Views from the Rooms and Delicious Iya Cuisine

The beautiful canyon view from the room, the star-filled sky, and the sound of birds were amazing. The Room was spacious, and the bathtub was so large it felt too big for one person. Dinner was delicious, especially enjoying local specialties heated right in front of us on a traditional hearth. The Room also had a massage chair that helped relieve tired legs and back after walking a lot. Although it's far away and not easy to visit every season, I would love to come back during a different season.

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

I stayed at this accommodation to visit the Iya Valley and Kazurabashi Bridge. With its excellent reviews and high ratings, I had high expectations, and it truly exceeded them. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted, guided to our room with care, and enjoyed a pleasant stay from meals to check-out. The room facing the valley featured an open-air onsen where we could relax in privacy while enjoying the hot spring. The time spent soaking in the onsen with breathtaking views was absolutely perfect. After check-out, there was a coffee service available at an outdoor café overlooking the valley, allowing us to savor our final moments at this accommodation. A unique hidden gem offering stunning views of Iya Valley, exceptional hospitality throughout our stay—this was a truly satisfying experience!

    Healing Accommodation

We visited to help my wife recover after her accident. Thanks to the Onsen's healing properties, she seemed to feel a bit better. The meals were rich in local flavors, and we finished everything. The soba served at the end was exceptional (apparently, the water used is special). Next time, we plan to visit specifically for the soba restaurant on-site. The view of the mountain slopes with no artificial structures was stunning, and we could see a beautiful valley about 70 meters deep. While bathing, we turned off the lights and enjoyed gazing at the night sky. Thank you for promptly providing chairs for use during bathing or near the entrance right after check-in—it was very helpful for elderly guests who are accustomed to living with beds and chairs. Towels were provided in double quantity, and high-quality lotions were prepared so that we could fully enjoy our bath experience. Thank you very much!

    Visiting again after four years!

My first accommodation experience here 4 years ago was wonderful, but upon revisiting after 4 years, I felt a slight gap between my expectations and the experience. The service remains very kind and warm, like visiting a relative's home in the countryside. For those expecting the meticulous service of a luxury ryokan, it might feel slightly "casual." Regarding the meals, overall they were delicious, but as a woman who usually eats well, I found the portions slightly large. The dessert could use some improvement; the roll cake gave an impression of being a pre-made refrigerated product. Since Tokushima has plenty of delicious seasonal fruits, incorporating fresh fruit might be lovely. As for breakfast, I fondly remember enjoying "soba furikake" 4 years ago so much that I had multiple servings of rice with it. Unfortunately, it wasn't offered this time which was disappointing. Thank you very much!

    A stunning accommodation in Iya

We stayed at the accommodation to celebrate my husband's upcoming 60th birthday. Originally, we had made a reservation at this ryokan five years ago and were looking forward to it. However, with the outbreak of COVID-19 in spring 2020, the first state of emergency was declared, and airports were closed. We had to cancel the reservation but finally managed to stay here after all these years. This time, we stayed in a suite with an open-air bath, so we could enjoy our meals without stepping out of the room. The view was absolutely stunning! While admiring it, we soaked in the soothing onsen and enjoyed meals in our private irori room. The staff were incredibly polite and attentive, making us feel truly relaxed. It became an unforgettable memory. Thank you very much!

    Traditional accommodation.

Visited during a trip to Tsurugi Mountain and Kazurabashi Bridge. The tourist spots had a noticeable influx of international visitors due to the inbound effect. The accommodation is located along a mountain stream, attached to a restaurant, with check-in available through an entrance exclusive to the accommodation. It gives off the impression of an old-fashioned accommodation, with hospitality that feels more casual and traditional rather than polished or refined. The room was spacious, offering views of the gorge from its windows. After rain, mist often envelops the gorge, creating a magical atmosphere. The bath facilities include both indoor and open-air options, with water quality that has a slightly viscous texture—perfect for relaxing soaks. What stood out most was the food! Meals are served in private rooms featuring traditional irori hearths—a unique experience in Iya Valley style dining. Dinner included Awa beef cooked on ceramic plates, wild boar hot pot (shishi nabe), fresh ayu sashimi as well as grilled ayu prepared over the irori fire—all delicious and satisfying in both quantity and taste! Breakfast was equally delightful with local ingredients and regional dishes like Hirara-yaki—a hearty start to the day leaving you fully satisfied. This is an ideal place for enjoying traditional ambiance alongside relaxing baths and exceptional meals—a perfect retreat worth revisiting!

Relax with stunning views and local cuisine.

The view from the room window was so breathtaking that my spouse and I couldn't help but exclaim in awe. The open-air bath, made of cypress wood, was spacious and relaxing—we lost count of how many times we soaked in it. The massage chair was also a much-appreciated touch. As for the meals, we were amazed by the freshness of local dishes like Dekowamashi, Handa noodles, Hirara-yaki, and Ayu sashimi. The wild boar hot pot was so delicious that we finished even the soup! Of course, the soba noodles were also excellent. Paired with local sake, it was a truly satisfying dining experience. After breakfast, we enjoyed complimentary coffee on the terrace of a nearby soba restaurant—it felt wonderful. The staff members were humorous and made our dinner time especially lively with endless laughter. We even bought yuzu miso from the accommodation's souvenir corner and immediately tried it with Iya konjac and Iya tofu purchased at a nearby supermarket—it was delightful! This is such a lovely accommodation that we'd love to visit again!

    Hospitality

This was my first stay with my daughter. It was unfortunate that the onsen bath in the room couldn't maintain a suitable temperature. In the morning, when I tried to take the first bath, it had turned cold and required adding hot water to make it usable. The meals were enjoyable, especially the robata-grilled dishes and soba noodles, which were delicious. Breakfast was elaborate, but I felt it could have been a bit simpler. The room had two sections, which allowed us to separate it into a bedroom and living area—this was very convenient. It is located about 4 minutes by car from Iya Kazurabashi Bridge. Thank you for your hospitality!

It was a unique experience soaking in the private Room bath while watching lightning and being startled by the sounds. This luxurious Room offers a semi-open-air bath surrounded by breathtaking nature.

Luxurious and charming accommodation in a hidden paradise

I was planning a summer trip to Kyushu, but when I found out that this accommodation I had been eyeing was available, I changed my plans immediately! It was everything I hoped for. The facility is old but well-maintained and clean. While there is no large public bath, each room has its own open-air bath. Our room had both a cypress bath and a ceramic bath, and we enjoyed soaking in them multiple times while admiring the view of the Iya Valley in the morning and evening. Dinner was served in a private room with an irori hearth, featuring delicious dishes like char-grilled fish, wild boar hot pot, and even tempura made from konjac—a first for me! The soba noodles at the end of the meal were also incredible; as a soba lover, they were my favorite ever! Overall, it was an unforgettable experience filled with firsts—hospitality and moments that left me thrilled beyond words! About 5 minutes away by car is the famous Kazurabashi Bridge in Iya.

    Enjoy Iya to the Fullest

From the warm welcome upon arrival to the heartfelt farewell at departure, our stay was truly pleasant. The Room with a cypress bath offered a great view and was very comfortable. After arriving, we crossed the Kazura Bridge and returned to enjoy a relaxing bath. The view from the bath was stunning, and the ample hot water made for an enjoyable experience. The charcoal-grilled sweetfish was delicious, as were the Awa beef shabu-shabu and other dishes. My wife also enjoyed another soak in the bath after dinner. The night was quiet, and the starry sky was breathtakingly beautiful—it had been a long time since I last saw the Milky Way. After enjoying a morning bath followed by breakfast, we departed feeling refreshed; even after check-out, we were treated to coffee service—a truly thoughtful touch. We had such a wonderful time here—thank you very much!

    Second stay

We booked the anniversary celebration course this time. It was our second visit, as we also used it for an anniversary before, and we were very satisfied with the consistent atmosphere, service, and meals. Last time we visited in winter, and the tempura ingredients were slightly different, allowing us to enjoy the seasonal variations, which was wonderful. Each room has a semi-open-air onsen bath where you can soak as much as you like whenever you want—this is truly blissful. The room is very simple with a small TV, but through the onsen, meals, and scenery, you can fully experience Japanese harmony and indulge in luxury. Highly recommended. Thank you very much!

It was a very satisfying accommodation. We had the soba kaiseki course, but since it did not include sobagaki, we made a sudden request to order it separately. They kindly served us freshly made sobagaki, which was delicious. The staff's attentiveness was excellent, making it a very comfortable accommodation. If check-out time were at 11:00 AM, it would have been even more relaxing and enjoyable.

    I had a relaxing time.

The price was reasonable, so I didn't have high expectations, but the room's bath was an onsen, and the facilities and view were excellent. The meals in the morning and evening were delicious. Considering the season, having boar hot pot by the hearth felt a bit too warm. I've had enough of rock tofu and konjac for now. All the staff were pleasant, and I even enjoyed coffee before leaving—such a delightful accommodation. I would love to visit again in a different season. Thank you very much!
