I stayed here on my ...

I stayed here on my first solo trip around Shikoku. I only knew Ehime for its citrus and sea bream rice, but the dishes made with local ingredients served here were unbelievably delicious. They also noted where each ingredient was sourced, which made me want to explore more of Ehime. The Room was amazing with a reservoir view—an incredibly luxurious space. It got plenty of sun and was already very hot even at 5 a.m., so I didn’t spend much time relaxing on the terrace, but walking around the reservoir was very pleasant. I’d love to visit again in a different season.

We were able to fully enjoy the charm of this auberge.

The Room had large windows, and this Accommodation let us truly appreciate nature—sitting on the comfortable sofa on the terrace to gaze up at the night sky, or feeling the breeze while listening to insects. The bathroom’s large glass door opens wide and leads out to the terrace, so we enjoyed a wonderfully open and relaxing bath time. I did think it would be even better if the Room were a bit larger; I couldn’t tell where the air conditioner was; I wished there were a small shelf near the tub for toiletries; and the shower pressure felt a little weak. That said, the craftsmanship is outstanding—you can really sense how high-quality the building is. What impressed me most overall was, of course, the food. As someone from Ehime, I was genuinely moved all over again by how delicious local vegetables, meat, and fish from Ehime can be. With beautiful views all around and thoughtful service from the chef and staff, dinner was truly comfortable and memorable. This is an auberge I’d love to stop by for dinner alone as well.

    Excellent dining experience

As the title suggests, the meals were truly impressive. They focused on local ingredients, and each dish was carefully prepared and absolutely delicious. The amenities were good, but it was inconvenient that the toilet was in the same space as the bath and washbasin. Also, I could hear footsteps from upstairs and the sound of doors opening and closing, which started to bother me and made it hard to sleep. It may have felt even louder because the surroundings are so quiet. The lake view was wonderful, and all of the staff were very kind—I’m truly grateful.

    Permanent Traveler

    Packed with love for Ehime.

I have a personal connection to Matsuyama, and our family of four enjoyed a Multiple Night Stay over Golden Week. I was amazed to find a Hotel of this caliber in a place that isn’t widely known across The whole country. First of all, the staff were wonderful—warm and genuinely welcoming without being overly formal. Because it’s a small Accommodation, each person seemed to handle multiple roles. The Room was very stylish. That said, some aspects of the bathroom area were slightly inconvenient, but once you see the attention to detail in everything from the furnishings to the smallest accessories, it hardly matters. The meals were outstanding—presentation, plating, number of dishes, aroma, flavor—truly an art form. The vegetables, meat, fish—every ingredient was sourced within Ehime Prefecture. The sake and shochu were also local brands, and the tableware was Tobe-yaki pottery. It really made us feel how rich Ehime is. Since we stayed multiple nights, dinner on the first and second days was completely different—double the excitement. When I asked about menu variety out of curiosity, they said they’ve accommodated up to four consecutive nights before but would prefer guests keep it to three if possible (laughs). We usually stay at busy Hotels as a family, so this was also a great experience for our children. Thank you very much.

    I stayed here again ...

I stayed here again after a long time. This was my third stay, but the Hotel has changed owners, so my stay history was no longer on record. The chef and staff have also changed, and it feels like an auberge in a new era, but I still hope to enjoy the comfort and flavors I’ve loved until now. That’s why I believe it’s worth visiting again.

    Delighted by the meals

I stayed here back when it was the former Auberge Tobe, and at that time the meals didn’t suit my taste. I heard the management had changed, so I came back. The Room was comfortable. The plentiful towels and the bed that lets you sleep soundly were just as good as before. The in-room drinks were genuinely delicious—unlike the coffee beans before, which tasted oxidized. Drinks in the refrigerator were also free of charge. And then dinner—I was truly impressed. It was a carefully prepared, delicious meal. I felt so happy and ate until I was completely full. Breakfast was also thoughtfully made and wonderful from the start of the day. I will definitely return.

    It was simply disappointing.

We planned this trip as a celebration of our child’s school advancement and because, due to our career changes, we expect we won’t be able to take weekdays off for the next few years—so this was meant to be our last trip for a while. After traveling around Shikoku, we made a Reservation here for the final night because Reviews said the meals were excellent. We were really looking forward to enjoying a course meal in a private room even with children, and to tasting Fujikawa-san’s fish, so we booked the best Room. However, on the first day of our trip we suddenly received a call saying, “For certain reasons we can no longer provide meals. Please choose either a refund of the meal fee or Cancel the Reservation.” We had already booked activities around Tobe and were in the middle of traveling, so canceling was difficult. When we told them we would still stay, they said they would arrange a restaurant in Matsuyama for dinner on our behalf. After that, they contacted us again and again throughout our trip just for those arrangements. When I couldn’t answer and called back, I reached staff who spoke broken Japanese and couldn’t communicate properly—only repeating “We’ll call you back.” We had no idea when they would contact us next, so I had to keep worrying about my phone during the entire trip. When it finally seemed decided, they told us “Only 5:00 p.m. was possible.” We had planned to drive from Kochi that day and ended up having to cancel several plans. The moment we arrived at the Hotel, we couldn’t even enter—not only not our Room but not even the front desk—and were immediately put into a taxi; I couldn’t even use the restroom. At dinner, unbelievably, children’s meals had not been reserved for everyone in our party. The restaurant hurriedly prepared food for our child(ren), and I felt terrible toward them. After paying for dinner there was no pickup arranged; when I called because we didn’t know what to do next, they said “Take a taxi back—we’ll pay for it at the Hotel.” By the time we returned it was 9:00 p.m., so there was no view or anything—just sleep. Also, the person in charge told us: “For dinner this time we’ve reserved a special course menu. For breakfast an acquaintance of our head chef has reserved bento boxes.” In reality dinner was simply items from the restaurant’s regular menu, and breakfast was catered boxed meals like those from an institutional lunch provider. Please don’t try to cover things up with empty words. The Room and bath were not particularly better than other hotels; moreover, the age ofthe Facility stands out.The Room wasn’tthe reasonwe came, and considering whatwe paid,I truly regretnot stayingaround Matsuyamaor Dogo instead. We hopedto endour tripwitha relaxingwonderful meal, but it turnedinto nothingbuta disappointingstay. The seriesof responsesfromthe Hotel staffwas also farfrom pleasant.

    Can’t wait to come back!

This was my first stay here. I booked because I was interested in the view and the spacious Room. It turned out to be the perfect choice. The staff service was excellent, and I would definitely like to come again.

Unchanged gourmet dining even after the change of owner! The perfect anniversary Accommodation you’ll be glad you returned to

Hearing that the owner had changed, we stayed here for the second night of our wedding anniversary trip with both anticipation and a little nervousness. A continually evolving commitment to food In the end, that anxiety quickly turned into admiration. Each dish was carefully prepared—beautiful to look at and so delicious that my spouse and I kept looking at each other with every bite. The menu reflected the richness of Tobe, and once again made us truly feel, “We’re so glad we came.” The Tobe-ware plates used for presentation were also wonderful. Unchanged hospitality and satisfaction Even with a new setup, the warm atmosphere of welcoming guests with care remains unchanged. If anything, the fresh energy has made this Hotel even more appealing. Following our bonfire-cooked meal in Uchiko Town, this outstanding dinner in Tobe allowed us to bring our wedding anniversary trip to a perfect close. I believe this is an Accommodation that will satisfy both longtime fans and first-time guests alike. Highly recommended for anyone seeking great food and quiet time. We would love to return in another season to enjoy these flavors again.

    Wonderful!

The meals were significantly more delicious than before during this visit! The dishes prepared by the up-and-coming young chef trained in Kyoto were outstanding. The arrangement of the Room was as lovely as ever, but it was a bit disappointing that the traditional Japanese candles were no longer there. Looking forward to visiting again during Golden Week!

I felt refreshed in the open Room with delicious meals!

We stayed here for a birthday trip and had a truly wonderful experience. The room was spacious and open, with an exceptionally large bath that exceeded our expectations. The design connecting the bath to the balcony was fantastic, allowing us to enjoy fresh air right after bathing and fully relax. The meals were absolutely delicious, with each dish carefully prepared. Not only did they taste amazing, but the beautiful presentation made them a feast for the eyes as well. Dining here felt like a special experience in itself. The staff maintained just the right balance of attentiveness without being intrusive, which made our stay very comfortable and relaxing. We felt at ease throughout our time there. In terms of access, it can be slightly challenging to reach by public transportation, so visiting by car is recommended. However, this also means you can enjoy peaceful moments away from everyday life in this serene location. This is an accommodation we would love to visit again—highly satisfying in every way!

The French cuisine enjoyed amidst nature, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, was exceptional. The view from the large windows of the private villa-style room resembled a beautiful painting. The thoughtful hospitality of the staff was evident everywhere, making for a comfortable stay. Waking up in the middle of the night, I was amazed by the Big Dipper filling the sky above the pond. I look forward to experiencing this place in another season as well.

I was worried about the name change, but it turned out great.

Used a few years ago. Made an accommodation reservation with overseas friends because the meals were excellent. After the reservation, I was surprised to receive an email under an unfamiliar accommodation name. Apparently, the owner had changed and so did the name. I was worried that the meals might have changed as well, but they were just as carefully prepared and delicious as before. One thing I always notice is that the bath is a bit inconvenient. While it's nice that the bathtub is luxuriously large, it takes a very long time to fill with water (probably over 30 minutes). This point is truly disappointing. However, opening the bathroom door to create an open-air bath-like atmosphere is enjoyable. My overseas friends also appreciated how quiet it was, enjoyed the view from their room, and loved the meals.

A serene view to clear your mind and delicious cuisine

Delicious meals made with 90% locally sourced ingredients. We enjoyed them served on Tobe-yaki pottery. The views of the pond and sky from the Room and dining area were wonderful, and the Room itself had a very calming design. Since breakfast starts later, we were able to visit a pilgrimage temple from the lakeside walking path beforehand. We are also grateful for the hospitality of all the staff. We stayed here for a break before a business trip, and it became a wonderful retreat in a quiet setting. It’s easy to see why guests return—we’d love to stay again.

This is my fourth stay after a while. The accommodation, just a 30-minute trip from home, still feels like another world. Dinner has improved even further, offering artistic and sophisticated dishes crafted with excellent techniques and high-quality ingredients infused with the chef's creativity—a must-try experience. The room was as comfortable as ever. It would be nice to have a basket for used towels.

    We had a great time.

We were warmly welcomed with a drink while the manager kindly addressed our questions, clearing any doubts we had. Thanks to this, we enjoyed a peaceful and elegant stay. We also deeply appreciate the room upgrade. The meals tasted even more delightful. Please continue offering your delicious vegetable and fish-focused cuisine. We look forward to visiting again!

    The meals are exceptionally delicious.

I stayed for two nights, and the meals were absolutely outstanding. The dinner course was Western-style with a focus on seafood dishes and fewer heavy options, offering a delightful blend of Japanese and Western flavors. The seasoning was perfectly balanced, with creative touches that made every dish enjoyable without feeling repetitive. For multiple night stays, the courses feature entirely different menus each night. I visited in September and enjoyed exquisite seafood such as pike conger, eel, and sea urchin—all incredibly delicious. The main meat dishes were equally impressive. The view from the restaurant's large windows was also stunning. For breakfast during my stay, I had both Japanese and Western-style options on different days—another thoughtful touch that added to my satisfaction with the meals. The room offered a serene view of nature through its windows, providing a relaxing atmosphere where you could enjoy stargazing at night. While Wi-Fi connectivity was weak and there was no TV in the room, it allowed for an excellent digital detox experience. Guests can borrow books from the lobby lounge to read in their rooms or use yoga mats provided by the hotel—embracing disconnection is highly recommended here! Additionally, I opted for an oil massage as an extra service; the therapist’s skills were exceptional, and I appreciated being served figs and herbal tea afterward. The staff provided warm hospitality with just the right balance of attentiveness while respecting privacy—a refreshing approach that felt genuine rather than overly polished like some five-star hotels might aim for. While summer’s lush green scenery was beautiful during my visit, I’ve been told that each season offers dramatically different views worth experiencing—I look forward to returning in another season! I don’t usually write reviews but felt compelled to share about this truly remarkable place!

    Second visit since May

The reception staff explained the process clearly, allowing us to head to the accommodation building with peace of mind. As always, the breathtaking view of the pond spreads out before us. The Diamond Member benefit was the same wine as last time. Although I mentioned this in my previous review, I have resigned myself to accepting that this is their version of champagne. The anniversary plan champagne was likely the same, so it seems we couldn’t receive two bottles. Unfortunately, there were no upgrades available to a suite or villa despite availability being mentioned as a possibility. This was disappointing. However, I found the meals tastier than last time. Focusing on enhancing the flavors of fish and vegetables could lead to even better dishes in my opinion. While I had hoped for some improvements this time and felt slightly let down, I will visit again with an open mind next time and look forward to enjoying delicious meals once more!

    A villa-like Hotel

It was a wonderful Room. It was very comfortable, and it felt more like staying at a private villa than a Hotel, so we were able to relax and enjoy our time. All of the dishes were delicious, and the tableware was beautiful as well—everything made for a truly lovely experience. However, there was just one disappointing thing: only we did not receive the breakfast dessert. None of the staff noticed. Even though that was unfortunate, the Room and food were so great that it is still an Accommodation we would like to visit again.

An extraordinary experience. Starting with a delicious welcome drink, every dish was carefully prepared to highlight the flavors of the ingredients, leaving a lasting impression. Enjoyable conversations, visually delightful presentations, and the joy of tasting each creation brought pure bliss. Thank you to all the staff for your genuine kindness and attentive service.

No repeat stay compared to out-of-prefecture Hotels at the same price level.

【Exceeded Expectations】 - The meals for both breakfast and dinner were absolutely exquisite. We were very satisfied. 【Fell Short of Expectations】 - The Diamond Member benefits were disappointing compared to hotels in other prefectures with similar price ranges. Specifically, this accommodation provided a bottle of champagne without prior confirmation, which we couldn't drink as we're not fond of it. Other hotels offered coupons worth 5,000 yen usable within the facility, so this was underwhelming. - The room's bath was not an onsen but regular hot water. It lacked a circulation system and required manual operation to fill the tub and time it ourselves. Since we wanted to bathe at night and in the morning, it felt inconvenient and less hygienic—an onsen would have been preferable if possible. - There were about five spiders over 10 cm in size in the room. While understandable given the location, it left us feeling uncomfortable at first impression. - We stayed in a villa with four people, but the room felt very cramped—perhaps best suited for a maximum of two guests instead?

    No memorable dishes.

The auberge emphasizes meals, using local ingredients and presenting them beautifully, but the dishes are not memorable. The young chef's cooking feels immature. These kinds of dishes can be found in Tokyo, so there's no reason to come all the way to Ehime. The Room is comfortable but not cozy, and there’s no opportunity to stroll around the premises—everything is disappointing.

    Escape

I live in Matsuyama but was recommended to stay here, and everything was simply amazing. I was especially impressed by the chef's skill in transforming abundant local ingredients into intricate yet unpretentious dishes. (The tableware used for the meals is said to be Tobe-yaki, and it was a delightful discovery of modern Tobe-yaki that steps beyond tradition.) The view of the pond from the restaurant, dyed in twilight, felt like gazing at a Japanese painting. From the meals to the subtle hospitality of the staff, the serene night surrounded by greenery with no noise, morning birdsong, and a clean and relaxing room—everything helped clear my mind from daily busyness and distractions. I was amazed to find such an incredible retreat so close by for an escape. I look forward to visiting again for another getaway from everyday life.

    Perfect Hideaway

The accommodation, cuisine, and staff were excellent. All the ingredients used in the cuisine were locally sourced from Ehime Prefecture, reflecting the chef's dedication. Dining at the long counter in the dining area was atmospheric and memorable. The accommodation was clean and had a villa-like feel. I would definitely like to visit again next time.

French cuisine with a Japanese twist

Enjoy a blissful dinner at the counter while admiring the stunning view of the lake (actually a reservoir) and fountain that captivated the accommodation owner. The flexible start time is an added delight. The meal, though French, has a light touch with minimal butter and cream, giving it a Japanese-inspired feel. The low-temperature cooked beef was astonishingly delicious. Initially, I wondered if it would be enough, but by dessert, I was completely satisfied. The room features beautiful furnishings and an amazing view from the bath. However, one drawback was the lack of storage options like wardrobes for clothing or places to hang towels and bathrobes. This made it difficult to keep such a beautifully arranged room tidy, which was slightly disappointing.

    I had a relaxing stay.

The check-in process was a bit confusing, and we had to move around by car despite being guided. However, the view of Tsutani Pond from the Room and restaurant was very calming. The food featured luxurious ingredients like large spiny lobsters and tasted great, though I wished for a bit more excitement. It was a satisfying stay with a warm send-off at the end, along with thoughtful souvenirs—thank you! For future reference, here are some points I noticed: 1) Some staff seemed inexperienced. 2) Even with the shower room door closed, water leaked outside. 3) The Diamond Member benefit was sparkling wine from South Africa instead of champagne.

Cuisine, service, and smiles beyond expectations

I heard there was a well-regarded auberge in Tobe, just a short trip from Matsuyama City, so I visited for the first time. After going just a little way up from town, everything around was lush green! It had been a while since I spent time in such a nature-filled setting. In the clean, spacious Room, the birdsong felt close by. Dinner featured carefully prepared dishes using ingredients from Ehime; every course was delicious, and the pairings with wine and sake were outstanding. The staff’s warm smiles made me truly want to come back. This time we visited during the season of fresh greenery, but my wife and I are now debating whether to come next during cherry blossom season or autumn foliage season.

The price does not match the quality of service.

I was looking forward to the cuisine as it is an auberge, but there was nothing particularly memorable—neither good nor bad. As for the Room, being in the mountains, I understand insects are inevitable, but several centipedes appeared in the Room. After bathing, I found one on my underwear when changing clothes. This made it hard to relax even while sleeping. I believe more effective insect prevention measures could be implemented. Additionally, the design of the Room was questionable; the door leading to the bathroom and toilet was made of glass with vertical slats, making activities inside visible from the bedroom. Considering that some guests may stay with friends, this design choice seems puzzling. The staff's service also left much to be desired. After check-in, we were not informed about moving via cart and were left waiting in confusion at the lobby without explanation. In the morning, staff members walked by chatting among themselves without greeting us or acknowledging our presence—it felt quite disappointing overall. If it were a budget-friendly option that would be one thing; however, having paid nearly 200,000 yen for our stay, I cannot say I'd want to return again at this price point.

    Auberges are amazing...

It was my first time staying at a hotel with "Auberge" in its name, and it turned out to be an exceptional experience. In May, we stayed for one night in a suite as a party of two. Despite being conveniently located about 10 minutes from Matsuyama IC, the hotel is surrounded by an emerald green pond and lush greenery, offering a tranquil atmosphere. Visiting right after Golden Week meant fewer guests, allowing us to enjoy peaceful and relaxing moments. The terrace was particularly impressive—a serene space where only the sounds of birds and insects could be heard, creating an unparalleled sense of luxury that left me deeply moved. The facility was impeccably clean with well-thought-out interior design throughout, which delighted my companion as well. As for dining, we were able to savor the finest local treasures from Ehime's sea and mountains. Each dish was served at its best while we enjoyed conversations with the chef about each creation. The menu listed only ingredients and their origins, adding excitement as we anticipated what would be served next. Breakfast also featured dishes made with plenty of fresh vegetables—an absolute delight! I look forward to revisiting during cherry blossom or autumn foliage seasons to enjoy seasonal ingredients once again!

Got lost using the car navigation!

There were no directional signs, and even though I thought I was getting closer... It was a bit frustrating, but in the end, the accommodation's room, lobby dining area, and overall atmosphere were very relaxing. The meals were characteristic of a carefully curated auberge, with attention to ingredients, cooking methods, and beautifully selected tableware. I felt very comfortable—thank you to the staff! I will visit again.
