    Naraya is the best!

    Naraya was wonderful. It was our first stay, and the food, the Onsen, and everyone at the Hotel were kind and welcoming—it was truly a happy three days and two nights. It became a great memory for my mother and me. My mother was delighted and said she would love to stay at Naraya again. My husband, who gave us this trip as a gift, was also very happy, so I would like to express my heartfelt thanks. Thank you very much.

    The price and the services provided do not match at all.

    I am a man in my mid-40s. I stay at Ryokan of this class 4–5 times a year all over The whole country. I have never posted a Review in my life, but the service here was so poor and so far from worth the price that I decided to write this in the hope it helps those considering this Accommodation. This was my first visit to Kusatsu Onsen, and I stayed at Naraya—an inn that prides itself on 150 years of history—with my family of five (myself, my wife, my mother-in-law, and our two children aged 8 and 5). After completing check-in, a man who seemed to be the head attendant (mid-50s) escorted us to our Room, calling out things like “Mr. ___, okay then—this way,” in a tone more like a coach leading students than staff welcoming guests. Once we arrived at the Room, there was no explanation at all. The lamps and kotatsu had all been unplugged; every outlet had been pulled; no heating was on; and the Room felt chilly. The building and Room had a nice atmosphere—a blend of 90-year-old character with renovations. For dinner, we were given a private dining room. It was a tatami room with tables set up. Two hot carpets were laid on the floor, but again every plug had been pulled out; even the heater provided was unplugged; and the room felt cold. We had informed them in advance that we would be staying with elementary-school-aged children, yet our children were served exactly the same menu as adults. Even if you accept that point, their dishes also contained wasabi—something they obviously could not eat. I complained to the attendant. The same head attendant who escorted us after check-in came to apologize but said they could not change the meal contents. I understand that—and accepted it as unavoidable. However, when dessert was served they also brought our children the same piping-hot tea as for adults—again something children cannot reasonably drink. As for taste: both dinner and breakfast were neither particularly good nor bad for an Accommodation in this price range. The sushi prepared right in front of us at dinner was good, as were the freshly baked croissants with sweet bean paste butter at breakfast. Overall: careless service with not even a hint of hospitality. A long-established Ryokan resting on its laurels thanks only to its prime location just 1–2 minutes’ walk from Yubatake. Their “150-year history” is nothing to boast about—it is embarrassing at this level.

    I was impressed by the soft, soothing hot water that felt like it gently enveloped my body.

    I was truly impressed by the soft, gentle water that seemed to envelop my body—completely different from the Kusatsu hot springs I had experienced before. It was the first time I really understood the importance of the bath steward’s work. The meals were also delicious, and my wife and I were both very satisfied. We would love to stay again.

    The Onsen was wonderful.

    We stayed at Naraya, a long-established inn in Kusatsu Onsen, with two adults and two children. While preserving a classic, traditional atmosphere befitting its history, the property has been properly renovated and kept very clean, making it extremely comfortable to stay in. The baths were among the best Onsen we have experienced despite having stayed at many Onsen Accommodations. We had imagined Kusatsu as having very hot water that can feel intense, but the Onsen here was relatively mild with just the right temperature, allowing us to soak comfortably for a long time. It seems to be well maintained. The food was also delicious and we were satisfied. If I had to mention one thing, the children’s meal (upper elementary school age) was the same as the adults’, so it would be nice if there were a dedicated children’s menu. Also, while it is a wonderful Accommodation overall, we felt that for a Room without an open-air bath it was somewhat expensive.

    A Timeless, Established Charm

    The Shirahata hot spring water was wonderful, and we really enjoyed the delicious meals. Our Room had a view of Yubatake, and the location was excellent. That said, if I may be a bit picky, I would have appreciated a more user-friendly hair dryer in the Room, and it would be even better to have a coffee machine like those often seen these days (there is, however, a bar counter where you can enjoy good coffee). Also, since the third guest’s bedding was a futon, it felt slightly different in comfort compared with the beds. I also thought it might be more comfortable if there were sleepwear such as samue provided in addition to yukata. That said, these are just personal preferences. The atmosphere unique to this historic Accommodation is very appealing, and being able to fully enjoy both the hot spring source and the location was truly wonderful. This Accommodation is especially recommended for those who love Yubatake. We would definitely like to stay again.

    An Accommodation that promises a happy stay

    My spouse and I stayed here for the first time in about a year. The baths, carefully maintained by the bath steward, were outstanding as always, and we were also impressed by the luxurious, delicious meals featuring local ingredients. We would definitely like to stay again.

    Exceptional hospitality, a wonderful Onsen, and highly satisfying meals!

    We were very satisfied with the Onsen, the meals, and the hospitality! We stayed in a Comfort Floor Deluxe Room, but unfortunately we could clearly hear footsteps and other noises from the Room above. We hope guests will be mindful, though it may also be due to the building’s structure. Other than that, everything was excellent.

    High-quality accommodation

    I stayed here because I wanted to soak in the Onsen carefully adjusted by the yumori (hot spring caretaker). Normally, Kusatsu Onsen is so hot that it’s difficult to stay in for long, but the temperature was excellent. While preserving the spring’s qualities with free-flowing water, this perfect balance is something you can only find at Naraya, where a yumori is on site. Although it is an old building, the interior has been beautifully renovated in a modern style, creating a well-balanced Facility. The amenities and supplies were appropriate for the price. Considering that even many high-end properties do not provide soft towels and facial cleanser at the washing area, I could really feel their effort. If I had to add one request, I would have liked samue loungewear. Rather than simply showcasing luxurious ingredients, the meals were carefully prepared with time and care. In particular, I was impressed by the chef’s hand-formed sushi and the breakfast croissants. The service was pleasantly attentive and left a good impression overall; however, the checkout process and Shuttle Service arrangements were disappointing. With advance guidance to ease congestion or better coordination, we wouldn’t have had to wait as long as 45 minutes.

    I have visited various places before, but this was the most impressive experience. The meals and Onsen were as wonderful as expected, and the service at Naraya was exceptional—from the manager (?), to those who served our meals, and even the person who kindly drove us to the bus center—everyone was amazing. (The wine provided through your site’s service was also a nice touch!) Including the magical atmosphere of Kusatsu Onsen and the warm hospitality of those at the Yumomi show, this trip turned out to be incredibly satisfying. Thank you once again!

    Onsen-Focused Accommodation

    The onsen was as good as its reputation. However, while the younger staff were enthusiastic, the older staff gave off an impression of routine work. The meals lacked a sense of attention to ingredients or preparation; for example, the vegetable stew at breakfast tasted like simple home cooking. Staying in a Western-style room may have contributed to this, but the sound of children’s footsteps from the neighboring room was constantly audible. For those looking for a relaxing stay, it might be better to reserve a higher-grade room. Since Kusatsu Onsen is popular and attracts many visitors, there may not be much effort put into improving service or meal quality.

    A Happy Journey with Your Daughter and Her Spouse

    We stayed with my daughter, who is expecting in March, her husband, and my spouse. Although we are locals, it was a delightful stay in Kusatsu after a long time. The accommodation was impeccably clean throughout, with meticulous attention to detail. There were no concerns about the pregnant woman slipping in the bath area, and the water was pristine and wonderful. Both dinner and breakfast were incredibly delicious with beautiful presentation; there were surprises as well, making it luxurious like dining at a fine restaurant. Most of the staff members were Japanese, which is rare compared to places like Shima or Ikaho—this was quite surprising. Although there wasn’t an alcohol vending machine on-site for an after-bath drink, this added to the refined atmosphere of the accommodation. It became a very special memory before welcoming our grandchild. Thank you very much!

    Second Visit

    Visited six months ago and loved the Onsen so much that I decided to return. Last time, I stayed in a Room on the 3rd floor, but this time it was the "Rindou" Room on the 2nd floor. Although there are stairs, access to the large public bath and smoking area was very convenient. The changing area of the large public bath has been renovated, with towels provided for a comfortable experience. Winter in Kusatsu can be extremely cold, but both the Room and indoor areas were warm and cozy. The meals were luxurious and delicious as it was during New Year's celebrations. The staff were friendly, making this Accommodation one I would love to visit again!

    The atmosphere, service, and hospitality are excellent.

    The room had a charming atmosphere, and the facility was excellent. The service and staff's attentiveness were also great. The dining staff, in particular, were efficient and responded pleasantly to our requests, making the dining experience enjoyable. Since it is a wooden structure, surrounding noises and conversations echoed quite late into the night, but that’s understandable. The onsen was absolutely fantastic. While the open-air bath would be perfect with a better view of the scenery, I will make sure to check the room view more carefully when making my next reservation. The meal content was satisfying overall; the sushi was delicious with customizable options for nigiri. Taste preferences may vary, but I felt that some dishes like soup stock or sukiyaki could have been slightly different in flavor. The recommended local sake was delightful! Breakfast rice and freshly baked croissants were excellent as well. The birthday cake provided was nice; however, considering age preferences, perhaps sake might have been more suitable. Thank you for seeing us off until the very end! Kusatsu is truly a wonderful place to visit!

    First Time in Kusatsu

    It was my first visit to Kusatsu. I was able to stay at Naraya due to a vacancy. It is a historical and charming accommodation where I could relax and enjoy my stay. The onsen, including the water and the facility, was perfect—my skin became smooth, and the temperature was just right for staying in as long as I wanted. The meals were seasonal and truly delicious. The young staff members were cheerful, friendly, and provided excellent service. Thank you very much!

    I had a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

    The room, hallway, and other facilities were thoroughly cleaned, providing a sense of cleanliness and allowing for a comfortable stay. The meals were carefully prepared dish by dish, delicious, and served in semi-private rooms where we could relax and enjoy our drinks. The glass of wine was also delightful. Additionally, the "surprise" was truly wonderful! The Onsen had a charming atmosphere in the bath area, with the perfect water temperature that made for a relaxing soak. It was my first time visiting Kusatsu Onsen, but thanks to this experience, I was able to enjoy both the hot springs of Kusatsu and the flavors of Joshu. Thank you very much!

    Highly Satisfied

    Located very close to Yubatake and within walking distance to Sai-no-Kawara, the accommodation offers an excellent location. The interior has a calm atmosphere, with spacious rooms and well-equipped amenities. While meals are not served in the room, a private booth is provided, allowing guests to enjoy their meals in a relaxed and comfortable space. The meal selection was impressive, even featuring a sushi stall that wasn't listed on the menu—an absolute delight. The onsen includes two gender-swapped areas with charming atmospheres; however, the indoor bath was slightly lukewarm. The staff's hospitality was exceptional, making this an accommodation I would love to visit again.

    Kusatsu Onsen

    This was my second visit to Kusatsu, and I appreciated the charm of a traditional Japanese Ryokan. While I thought having a sauna might be nice, perhaps that's not the focus here. The hospitality was excellent, and I felt well taken care of. I would love to visit again if given the chance.

    I witnessed the true strength of a long-established Ryokan.

    We enjoyed a relaxing therapeutic trip in a calm and lovely room. Due to stress-induced eczema, my skin was irritated, but thanks to Kusatsu's onsen water, even during a short 1-night, 2-day stay, my symptoms improved significantly, which made me truly happy. Kusatsu Onsen itself is amazing, and the bath here allowed us to fully enjoy its wonderful water. The onsen seemed meticulously maintained, providing an incredibly relaxing bathing experience. The meals were carefully prepared with heartfelt attention and were absolutely delightful. We left feeling full and happy. Above all, the staff members were truly exceptional. Everyone we interacted with was pleasant and courteous, which made us genuinely happy. It was evident that each staff member took pride in their work through their professionalism. As an established ryokan with a long history, our expectations were high—and this ryokan met them perfectly. It turned out to be such a wonderful trip. We would love to stay again in the future.     A Celebration Trip for My Father's 90th Birthday

    We visited as a family of five to celebrate my father's 90th birthday. It was our first time in Kusatsu, and we were surprised to find that the accommodation does not have its own parking lot. We parked at a nearby affiliated parking area and waited for the shuttle van. It was unexpected for such a renowned accommodation, but this was entirely due to our lack of research about Kusatsu (not the fault of the accommodation). The accommodation has a cozy and calm atmosphere with an elegant charm. Although it is old, it is clean and has a lovely scent of incense. The service was not overly attentive, which felt just right. The food was delicious, and in addition to rice at breakfast, we were served freshly baked croissants—a delightful treat for bread lovers! The onsen had an excellent water quality that left both my skin and hair smooth and shiny—it was the best onsen experience I’ve ever had. The location is also great; being in the center allowed us to take multiple strolls around town and enjoy its atmosphere. One thing to note—though this isn’t the fault of the accommodation—is that both the property and town have many stairs, which were challenging for my elderly father. If you’re visiting Kusatsu with limited mobility or weak knees, please be cautious. Although it must have been tiring after such a long trip, my parents seemed very satisfied overall. Next time I plan to visit with my husband—thank you so much!

    Delicious meals and exceptional baths

    This was my fourth time staying in Kusatsu. This time, I stayed at "Naraya," located near Yubatake. It’s an accommodation I’ve always been curious about. [Meals] Every dish was delicious, and the surprise sushi was truly impressive. [Onsen] The onsen featured beautiful emerald green water with a sulfur aroma. Thanks to the Yumori staff performing Yumomi, the water had a soft texture and perfect temperature. With its historical charm and kind hospitality, I had a very comfortable stay. The coffee and desserts at the attached café were also delightful. I would love to stay here again—thank you!

    First Time at Kusatsu Onsen

    My husband and I visited Kusatsu Onsen for the first time. The Onsen water was incredibly smooth and soft, a completely new experience for us.     I stayed for one nig...

    I stayed for one night on October 2nd. Despite being close to the bustling Yubatake area filled with many tourists, the Ryokan offered a serene and tranquil atmosphere, allowing me to enjoy a very relaxing two days. All the staff were pleasant, and I especially appreciated the friendliness and attentiveness of the person who served dinner—it was truly comforting. Usually, I find it difficult to finish all courses at a Ryokan dinner, but this time I managed to enjoy everything up to dessert. I believe this was thanks to both the quality of the food and excellent service, which also left me feeling great the next day. Thank you for two wonderful days!

    The Dignity of a Long-Established Ryokan

    My first visit to Kusatsu Onsen. I chose Naraya based on its proximity to Yubatake and the excellent reviews. The bath, managed by a dedicated bathkeeper, was exceptional; the room was impeccably clean with attention to every detail; the seasonal meals served in a private dining space were delightful; and the thoughtful care of all the staff exceeded all expectations. I had an incredibly fulfilling time, completely refreshed both physically and mentally, forgetting about reality for a while. Thank you so much!

    The location and the bath are excellent!

    It would feel more traditional if the service was a bit more attentive. When we finally arrived at the accommodation by car, we were handed a simple map and told to leave the car in the parking lot. I waited at the accommodation while my husband, who was driving, headed to the parking lot with the map. When he didn’t return for some time, I asked one of the staff what happened, and they said, "The parking lot is about 10 minutes away by car. It’s quite far." As expected, my husband got lost trying to find it and ended up coming back to Naraya again. Our precious time in Kusatsu was wasted searching for a parking spot. From the beginning, it would have been better if they had either taken care of our car or provided detailed instructions or navigation when handing over the map.

    The changing room has been renovated.

    We stay at the accommodation every August with my daughter, and the renovated dressing room has become much more convenient. Some guests seemed confused by the hard-to-find door to the bath. It might be better to make the door easier to understand for first-time visitors. The customer service seems to improve year by year. Since it's an all-you-can-eat buffet, I understand, but I would be more satisfied if the sushi toppings were slightly better.

    Sushi for dinner... what a treat!

    The facility has an elevator, but the structure requires using stairs either up or down, which may be inconvenient for those with mobility issues. The room amenities are well-equipped, including items like Sekkisei skincare products and mouthwash. For dinner, there was no mention of rice on the menu, which raised some curiosity; however, sushi was freshly prepared right in front of us and could be enjoyed as much as desired. Breakfast included rice but also featured freshly baked croissants. This accommodation offers exceptional hospitality.

    The Room smelled of ...

    The Room smelled of smoke. Despite pre-booking a ride to the station, it was full on the day and unavailable. During the course meal, the next dish was brought out while still eating the current one. There was no trash bin in the bath area and no toothbrush provided in the bathroom. These instances reflect a lack of attention to service quality in several areas.

    The Onsen is excellent.

    This was my first stay at Kusatsu Onsen. Naraya's location is excellent, situated on the main street and close to Yubatake. The onsen was wonderful, featuring an open-air bath with well-maintained temperature control. Dinner was delightful as I could choose sushi toppings in front of me, and they were freshly prepared—absolutely delicious. Breakfast was also tasty, though I wished there had been seaweed available. The room was quiet and comfortable; however, the lack of air conditioner temperature adjustment made it a bit cold, which could be improved.
