    Deep in Iwate: Highly Satisfying Cuisine

    Located deep in Iwate, it’s a place that’s difficult to reach without a car, and it seems to be an area with extremely heavy snowfall, so you may want to choose the season carefully. The building was a bit old, but it was very well maintained and kept clean. It was a wooden maisonette-style Room with a garden and an open-air Onsen bath. You can relax and spend time quietly at your own pace. What stood out most was how delicious the meals were, using local Iwate ingredients and mountain produce in everyday dishes. Both dinner and breakfast offered great variety and were carefully prepared; the satisfaction level was very high, and you’ll be completely full. I think this Accommodation is excellent for enjoying food and Onsen while relaxing and refreshing at a leisurely pace.

    A Comfortable Summer in Nishiwaga

    We stayed in August. While the whole country was experiencing extreme heat day after day, Nishiwaga was pleasantly comfortable. Opening the window brought in a refreshing breeze, and we were able to relax and enjoy the Onsen in our Room. The meals featured a wonderful selection of summer dishes made with plenty of fresh local ingredients, and everything we tried was delicious. We could really feel the chef’s creativity and care. Next time, we’d like to stay in a different season. We’re already looking forward to the料理 then.

    The carefully prepared, healthy cuisine, the clean and stylish Room, the luxurious amenities, and the bath where you can soak while listening to the gentle murmur of the river—everything was deeply satisfying and made for a truly wonderful stay. What left the strongest impression was the hospitality of all the staff. There were several international staff members as well, and seeing them serve guests earnestly in Japanese and make an effort to embrace Japanese culture was heartwarming and put me at ease. This is an Accommodation I would love to visit again. Thank you very much for such a wonderful time.

    Unfortunately, it was raining heavily.

    On the day of our stay, unfortunately, heavy rain caused a landslide and the Kitakami Line was suspended on all sections. Even in those circumstances, the Shuttle Service to Kitakami Station was extremely helpful. At the Accommodation, the free-flowing Onsen was very relaxing. Dinner was elaborate and truly delicious. Breakfast was also very good. It was a highly satisfying Ryokan.

    I can’t believe there’s such a wonderful Accommodation nearby.

    This was my first stay here. The Room, the food, the Onsen, and the staff service were all outstanding! The dishes featured many local vegetables and included items I don’t often see elsewhere, and everything was truly delicious. Breakfast was served in a style where you can order as much of what you like as you want, so I didn’t have to worry about portion sizes—something that really showed thoughtful consideration for guests. The staff also explained each dish carefully when serving it, which impressed me even before eating. I’d love to try the seasonal menu in a different season, so I hope to visit again at another time of year. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

    It was a wonderfully relaxing stay.

    We stayed here to celebrate my sister’s birthday, and it was a deeply satisfying 3-day, 2-night stay that truly refreshed both body and mind in a nature-filled setting. The Room was very clean, and we enjoyed listening to the kajika frogs from the balcony and relaxing to the sound of the river as time passed slowly. The in-room bath was wonderful, but the open-air bath (Reservation required) was exceptional. Seeing fireflies after dinner on both nights became a lifelong memory. The meals—both dinner and breakfast—were simply outstanding. Everything was delicious, and we looked forward to every meal and finished every bite with excitement. Each dish felt like art, and it tasted just as amazing. Thank you for such a feast. The staff’s hospitality was truly top-class, and we felt comfortable from start to finish. What stayed with me most was after check-out: they saw us off and kept waving until our car disappeared from view. My sister and I left feeling genuinely grateful, and even after leaving the Ryokan, we remained filled with happiness. We would love to return whenever we need to soothe our hearts again.

    A relaxing Accommodation for adults

    This time, the rates were discounted to celebrate the opening of a new Accommodation in Oga, so I stayed at Yamado, which I had long admired.\n Above all, the hospitality was outstanding. Many of the staff were young, and their courteous service made my stay very comfortable. When I spoke to them, they kindly engaged in conversation as well, which made me happy.\n I had read somewhere that they use plenty of vegetables in their meals, and it was true—I enjoyed a wide variety of vegetables prepared with different cooking methods and seasonings. The salad dressing was unbelievably delicious. They also change the sauce for the meat each time you ask for more. That level of attention to detail is wonderful. Dinner was a relaxed meal that took about two and a half hours.\n For breakfast, there were many items you could choose and have cooked for you, and I ended up ordering everything. I ate until I was completely full.\n The Room was spacious and came with a semi-open-air Onsen bath, which I enjoyed many times. The private open-air bath was very clean and large, with an open and airy feel.\n It was an Accommodation that satisfied me in every way, and I would like to save up money and visit again someday.

    A feast, a private o...

    A feast, a private open-air bath, and warm hospitality This is the best Hotel. We traveled here feeling anxious about typhoons, earthquakes, and even the bear incident, but nothing happened—worrying was worse than doing—and it turned into an amazing trip. Thank you very much for taking such great care of us.

    It was comfortable.

    I stayed at this Accommodation mainly for the meals. Everything looked great and tasted delicious. The vegetables were especially good, and the breakfast left a lasting impression. It was heartwarming to see the diverse staff working together to promote Nishiwaga. Perhaps inspired by that, I later visited Nishiwaga’s submerged forest. It’s surprisingly little-known in Japan, but I think it’s an experience I can recommend. Unfortunately, Yamado was already fully booked so I couldn’t stay, but I hope to visit again in a different season.

    A truly professional Accommodation in every way—an amazing place you’ll want to come back to!

    This was our first stay here. First of all, every member of staff made us feel truly welcome. The level of training was outstanding, and there was so much to learn from. Coming from the city, we were quite frightened by the recent bear-related news. When we asked a male staff member wearing a “new staff” badge, he told us they are taking measures such as cutting trees on the mountain next to the open-air bath area. It sounded like a lot of work. At dinner, they carefully explained each dish, and we could really feel their attention to detail. When we mentioned that autumn must be lovely too, they brought out an album and talked with us while showing photos from each season. We could genuinely feel the hospitality in every little thing, and I was moved by what a comfortable Accommodation this is. It’s an Accommodation that makes you want to come back even if it’s far away. At night, the chorus of frogs was so loud I thought I might not be able to sleep—but it turned out to be nature’s music (laughs), and even though I suffer from insomnia, I fell asleep right away! And breakfast—absolutely amazing!! We’ve stayed at many Accommodations before, but this was easily among the very best. My husband loved it so much he went back for seconds of Shirogane Pork bacon. I was so happy to find an Accommodation I like so much that I almost want to keep it a secret! We had such a wonderful time. I sincerely hope Yamado will continue just as it is for many years to come. We will definitely return!! Thank you very much.

    An Accommodation where the owner’s commitment to hospitality is reflected in the staff.

    We visited Yamado in Nishiwaga for our wedding anniversary trip. A small Accommodation with 12 Rooms. When you open the window, you can constantly hear insects, frogs, and birds—nature is wonderful. Check-in, guidance to the Room, and service at the dining area were excellent. Different staff members came to serve during the meal, but everyone consistently shared warm smiles and solid knowledge of the food and drinks. The cuisine was a Japanese-Western fusion with plenty of wild mountain vegetables, and the portions were just right. It was comfortable all the way through checkout the next day. We didn’t use the open-air bath because it didn’t fit our schedule, but the in-Room Onsen was perfect—there was no need to go out of our way for the open-air bath.

    Relax and unwind with refreshing breezes and lush greenery

    I’ve stayed here several times, but this was my first visit in May. Enjoying the Onsen in my Room while feeling the refreshing breeze and looking out at the green mountains was wonderful. The creative dishes made with plenty of seasonal May ingredients were also very satisfying. And the pleasant conversations with the staff were truly soothing. As I left the Accommodation, I promised myself I would definitely come back again next May.

    It’s been a while.

    Thank you for taking care of us during our Multiple Night Stay. When I mentioned that there were stairs to the dining area and that we had an elderly person with mobility issues, thank you very much for accommodating us. It was our first stay in several years, and I was pleasantly surprised to find the chopsticks set up for a left-handed guest—it made me very happy. All of the staff were wonderful to talk with and very knowledgeable, and even the newer staff provided service just as good as their seniors. Please excuse me for saying so, but for an Accommodation deep in the mountains, the level of your young staff who come from far away is incredibly high. It’s also amazing that you take care of animals and do farm work as well. We looked through the restaurant album and could tell that the staff get along well and enjoy their days together. Every dish was outstanding in both presentation and taste, and the additional breakfast menu options are far too tempting. Both dinner and breakfast had no repeated dishes even during a Multiple Night Stay, so we ended up eating too much. The sweets served with tea were delicious on both days, and a staff member told us there was a shop nearby—so we stopped by on our way home to buy some. Seeing so many tiny tadpoles and large water striders gliding across the surface is proof of how clean the water is. If I had to mention one drawback, it’s that the entrance to the bath is small, so you have to bend down to enter. Next time, I’d love to try staying at Yamabito Oga for a Multiple Night Stay as well. The basket with the late-night snack was easy to carry and very cute.

    This Accommodation offers highly satisfying meals and hot water.

    Although it was a chilly, rainy day, the Room was warm and comfortable thanks to the underfloor heating. The view was wonderful, and the soothing sound of the river was incredibly relaxing—I felt truly refreshed. I have visited many Onsens, but the water quality here was exceptional and left my skin silky smooth. As for the hair dryer, for an Accommodation of this level, I would be happy if it were a Dyson or ReFa. Dinner was Western cuisine with an Italian base and Japanese touches—flavorful yet not heavy. It was very filling; they kindly offered to prepare a panini as a late-night snack, but unfortunately I was too full to enjoy it. Breakfast also offered an extensive selection: mainly Japanese-style, with additional Western options available from the menu. The staff were cheerful and worked hard to assist us, which made our stay very pleasant. At departure, even in light rain, the staff saw us off until our car disappeared from view. It warmed our hearts until the very end. Thank you very much. This is an Accommodation I would love to visit again.

    The Luxury of Doing Nothing

    I don’t usually do a Multiple Night Stay, but the response to my inquiries at the time of Reservation was so excellent that I decided to stay multiple nights. However, due to the Room I wanted, I stayed in Rokukabou on the first night and Rokujubou on the second, so I had to change Rooms. By switching Room categories, I could feel the differences between Rokujubou and Rokukabou in many ways. It seems the Accommodation also considers Rokujubou to be a step above Rokukabou, and I was surprised that even the towels and bedding were different. The Room design is nicer in Rokujubou, and the bed is wider and very comfortable (thanks to that, I accidentally slept through my reserved private bath time on the second night… such a shame…). The in-room bath is also spacious. However, since I don’t like having the washbasin area and toilet combined into one space, choosing my next Room will be difficult. With a Multiple Night Stay, even if menus change significantly, dishes made by the same chef often feel somewhat similar and can become repetitive—but here it was completely different each night, and I was very satisfied. In a good way, there are few Facilities at this Accommodation, so aside from meals and the private baths, I could stay in my Room, enjoy the view, and relax at leisure. At some Accommodations you can enjoy walking around vast grounds or visiting lounges or multiple private baths; however, this made me realize that those options can unexpectedly make you feel rushed for time. Two points concerned me: At check-in, it didn’t seem to have been shared with your staff member that we would be changing Rooms during our Multiple Night Stay, which made me uneasy. When moving Rooms—despite it being an outdoor corridor—my suitcase was rolled along normally and then placed in the Room without wiping down its wheels. (To begin with، having staff roll a guest’s suitcase along like that would be unthinkable at an Accommodation of this level.) At check-in، they carried it without rolling it. Since we do not have an “outdoor shoes” culture، I would appreciate clearer separation between outside and inside areas. Other than these two points، my stay was truly comfortable。 Next time，I will return during snowy season。Thank you very much。

    I love wild mountain vegetables.

    Every year around this time, our family takes an overnight trip to the Akita area, and among the Accommodations we have stayed at in recent years, this one was especially satisfying for both the meals and the Onsen. Our whole family loved it, and we would definitely like to return next year. This time we stayed in a condominium-style Room, but since one family member has knee trouble, we felt that next time we should choose a Room without stairs. We also needed to use stairs to reach the dining area and the reservation-only open-air bath, so it is not fully barrier-free. If you have concerns about mobility, checking in advance may give you peace of mind. We also felt it would be helpful if shower caps were provided in the reservation-only open-air bath. Alternatively, when guests are asked to bring bath towels from their Room, it would be even more considerate to include guidance on any other items that may be needed. The meals were wonderful—we were delighted to enjoy plenty of seasonal wild mountain vegetables that are only available at this time of year. The fresh vegetables paired perfectly with the house-made bagna cauda sauce and were truly memorable. Breakfast also offered a wide variety of dishes; overall, everything was gently seasoned with lighter saltiness, and we were very satisfied. We could feel the warm hospitality from all of the staff.     It was my first time staying here.

    Thank you for an amazing experience. We were comforted by the smiles of all the staff, the Facility, the Onsen, and the outstanding cuisine, and truly enjoyed an early birthday trip. Next time, we will visit in October, my wife’s birthday month. We have stayed at many Onsen Accommodations, but the head chef’s dishes impressed us with creativity and flavor that rank among the best in The whole country. Thank you very much.

    A Perfect Getaway

    Sixteen years since opening. The Rooms and building show their age, but they are well cared for, impeccably cleaned down to every detail, and extremely comfortable. The Onsen in each Room was wonderfully relaxing, and the bathroom facilities were state-of-the-art. I was amazed to find a ReFa shower head. The reservation-only open-air Onsen was beautiful, with the water temperature exquisitely adjusted depending on the time of day. Thoughtful attention to guests was evident throughout, and I was especially impressed by the staff’s care during meal times. The cuisine exceeded expectations, and the wine selection was outstanding. The route from Akita Airport is very easy to follow and far more convenient than it looks on a map. The night sky was unbelievably clear, making for a truly special and fulfilling holiday. I am sincerely grateful for the warm hospitality of all the staff. I will definitely return in another season.

    Solo travel

    When I looked back at photos from my last stay, I realized it had been four years. Spending time doing nothing—just gazing out the window and relaxing—was truly a luxury. There were a few things I noticed: - The welcome drink is no longer offered, which is fine, but the warabi mochi is gone as well. I understand the explanation that serving welcome drinks takes time, but I wondered if it could be prepared in the Room or placed in the refrigerator instead. - This may depend on the Room category, but the hair dryer was a standard one. I’d love to see options like Dyson or ReFa considered. - There was a CD audio system, but no Bluetooth speaker. Even having one available to borrow would be appreciated. That said, even with these points, this is still a wonderful Accommodation. The food was excellent—especially Yamanado-style vegetable bagna càuda, Nanbu chicken, and Hakkin pork. Many of the staff are young, but everyone was cheerful and made our stay very pleasant (they addressed us by our surname). Also, perhaps because they took into account that I don’t drink alcohol, this time the drinks in the Room refrigerator were non-alcoholic—juice and cider—which made me very happy. The Kitakami Line was suspended due to strong winds, and it was a great help that you picked us up at Kitakami Station. Thank you very much. I’ve already made my next Reservation, and I’m looking forward to visiting again.

    I was satisfied.

    During my stay, I was truly impressed by how wonderful the staff were! I stay at Onsen Accommodations every month, but this was the first time I’ve met staff who welcomed me with such lovely smiles. You can really feel the owner’s commitment as well.     We were able to spend a relaxing time.

    We stayed as a family of three. After staying at Yamado Oga last autumn, we were delighted to finally fulfill our wish to visit Yamado at Yukawa Onsen next. Once again, thanks to the warm hospitality and thoughtful care of the young staff, we were able to enjoy a wonderful time. The meals were beautifully prepared, and we enjoyed many delicious dishes. The Onsen was outstanding—both the in-Room bath and the open-air bath had excellent water quality and breathtaking views. Thank you for such a relaxing stay.

    I stayed here to celebrate my work anniversary.

    This was an Accommodation I’d wanted to stay at for a long time. The price takes some commitment to Reserve, but it provided a truly relaxing space that was well worth it. For me after many years of work, and for my wife who supported me throughout, the quiet, unhurried time we spent together as a couple was perfect for easing everyday fatigue. I had seen in Reviews that many of the staff are young, and I was impressed by how professional and composed everyone was despite their age. The food was also excellent. Since it was a special occasion, we chose the double main course even though we’re not exactly young anymore—but it was so luxurious that I managed the fish main, and by the time the meat main arrived… well… (laugh) The in-room bath—temperature included—was outstanding. The remaining snow and river view from the private open-air bath were also a treat for the eyes, though that one felt a little lukewarm. There were also young international staff members, and their sincere effort really came through—I found them very pleasant. As we were leaving, a Western gentleman kindly took a commemorative photo of us as a couple. We’re very grateful. You also have an affiliated Hotel in Oga, Akita, so I’d love to stay there someday as well. Thank you to all the staff for your wonderful hospitality!

    The hot spring was wonderful.

    I traveled by train. It was February, in the heart of the snowy season, and Lake Kinshuko blanketed in deep snow was breathtaking and unforgettable. From Hotto-Yuda Station, I took a shared Shuttle Service minibus called the “Yukemuri Taxi” to Yamado. I checked in at the lobby. There was no welcome drink; they only confirmed dinner and private bath times before showing me to my Room. My guest Room was Rokukabou. Compact but perfectly sufficient in size. Tea and warabi mochi were served here—delicious. Drinks in the fridge were complimentary: canned beer and canned chu-hi for alcohol, plus two bottles each of tea and water. Coffee and tea were provided in bags; you boil water yourself with a T-fal kettle. It was a shame there wasn’t an espresso machine. The twin beds were different sizes—I would have preferred them to be the same size. The Onsen water had a pleasantly silky texture and felt wonderful. The semi-open-air bath in the Room was just right in both size and depth, allowing me to soak slowly for a long time—very satisfying. The private open-air bath had an incredible view: across a small stream, the opposite bank was covered entirely in deep snow—the best scenery of all, and the highlight of this stay for me. Dinner focused on bringing out the best of each ingredient, and I added a wine pairing for 4,000 yen. The pairing exceeded expectations for the price, so I was very pleased. As for specific dishes: the bagna cauda was excellent; however, the whole pickled daikon radish was very salty, and it took effort to finish even one piece. The soft-shelled turtle hot pot soup was outstanding; with the grilled Hakkin pork shoulder loin, I found the white sauce rather mild in flavoring (refills were available), but since everything overall was quite filling, I managed to finish one portion anyway. Breakfast included multigrain rice and miso soup; overnight-dried yamame trout was delicious. The Hakkin pork bacon tasted even better than at dinner’s grill course item. I liked the Greek yogurt dessert so much that I looked up where to buy it afterward as well as during my stay! Service was kept to what’s necessary only, which allowed me to relax at my own pace throughout my time here—thank you very much!

    A winter Accommodation.

    This was my first visit in two years, and it remains a wonderful Accommodation with outstanding hospitality. From the warm welcome to serving and explaining dishes in the restaurant, the staff handle everything superbly.     A highly satisfying stay where you can savor both the cuisine and the atmosphere with care.

    We stayed for two nights, and the meals were truly outstanding—we enjoyed every dish throughout our stay. The staff kindly confirmed our preferences regarding portion sizes at the table, and breakfast was served in a style where we could choose from a variety of small dishes to suit our tastes. We really appreciated being able to enjoy everything comfortably without feeling overwhelmed. The Room was also very comfortable. The bed was great to sleep in, and both the air conditioning and floor heating could be finely adjusted, so we stayed warm throughout our visit. The amenities were well stocked, and although the in-room bath is an indoor bath, opening the window or door created a semi-open-air feel, which was especially pleasant during this stay with heavy snowfall. We were also grateful for the careful guidance provided in advance regarding transportation conditions due to bad weather, including suggestions for alternative Shuttle Service in case train services were suspended. As foreign travelers without a Japanese phone number, we especially appreciated how you kept us updated frequently by email—among many years of staying at Japanese Onsen Ryokan, your support made us feel particularly reassured. One small note: we found the design of the entrance to the Room’s Onsen charming and tasteful, seemingly inspired by a tea room; however, it may benefit from some additional consideration for elderly guests or those who are unsteady on their feet. We hope this feedback is helpful. Overall, it was an extremely satisfying stay, and we look forward to returning again in a different season.

    A Heartwarming Accommodation

    Following my visit during the autumn foliage season, I returned to Yukino Yamabito. I was completely satisfied with my previous stay, but this time exceeded it and truly moved me.
