    The building, the in...

    The building, the interior decor, and the lukewarm free-flowing Onsen (water quality) were wonderful, but the service and meals were somewhat disappointing.

    Expansive rice paddies and a place that feels just like an art museum!

    My husband grew up in a ranch in Hokkaido, while I was raised in the city. Drawn to this thatched-roof Accommodation, we stayed here for the first time. From the view at the entrance, we were amazed by the extraordinary, nostalgic buildings and the rice fields spreading out in front of them! We both fell completely in love with it. The Onsen is also wonderful—the free-flowing natural spring water is slightly lukewarm, perfect for a long soak. It leaves your skin feeling soft and moisturized. What’s especially impressive about this Accommodation is the many furnishings and antiques placed throughout, delighting the eyes everywhere you look! It feels like visiting an art museum. Truly amazing! My husband can be quite particular, but he absolutely loved it and says he definitely wants to come again in autumn. Getting to the annex using the cart and monorail was also fun and brought back childhood memories. Thank you so much for such a wonderful place.

    Though it’s an older property, it was comfortable.

    Overall, I was satisfied. Even though the facilities are old, the air conditioning and automatic doors make up for it, and even though it is in a separate building, the carts and cable car felt like more than just entertainment—they also seemed to reduce the psychological sense of distance. The Room was clean and comfortable. The Onsen in the large public bath was great, so I didn’t mind that the bath in the Room is not an Onsen; however, it takes a long time for hot water to fill up, so you may want to keep that in mind. The meals weren’t exceptionally outstanding, but they were tasty overall. That said, it was disappointing that the jelly made with canned fruit at breakfast and the tea were not good. It might have been better to simply serve fresh fruit without extra preparation. Since transportation access isn’t very convenient, I would appreciate more flexibility with Shuttle Service or some options that connect to nearby sightseeing spots.

    The Room size was go...

    The Room size was good, and the electric cart was fun. However, the bath and meals were disappointing. Although it was a Room with an open-air bath, it was not free-flowing; we had to fill it ourselves. I was surprised that it wasn’t Onsen water but tap water. The large public bath was lovely. The meals were average. For this price, I think the bath should be free-flowing and the food quality should be higher. I also had concerns about the service—there wasn’t even a farewell greeting at checkout, which was very disappointing.

    The Facility is interesting, but

    The electric cart, monorail, and the Facility were fun. The Room also had a high ceiling and was comfortable, and the free-flowing bath water left my skin feeling smooth, which was great. Also, the woman at the front desk was very kind and welcoming with a smile. But that’s about it... Maybe my expectations were too high, but it felt pretty average.

    This Accommodation is a renovated traditional Japanese house, but...

    This Accommodation felt like a kind of folk-art museum: an old traditional house was relocated and renovated, with antique ship chests placed throughout, reused old fittings, and decorative transoms and paintings displayed in many areas. The Room was a spacious Japanese-style room with beds, but it wasn’t very practical. The irori-style corner had a narrow wooden floor and didn’t feel relaxing. On the other hand, the large tatami area had an excessively high ceiling and no furniture at all, so there was nowhere to truly unwind. The bed itself was high quality and the pillows were thoughtfully chosen, which was great, but there were no bedside lights like you would find in a Hotel, which was inconvenient. There is a renovated modern indoor bath, but the stone tub is heavily affected by the outside temperature, so the water cools down quickly. The hot water only came out in a trickle when filling the tub and took a very long time—perhaps because the Room is located on higher ground. Dinner is presented as kaiseki-style cuisine, but it doesn’t go beyond standard Japanese food commonly found at a Ryokan. You travel to detached guest rooms by golf cart or cable car. It feels fun at first, but it takes too long and made going to the large public bath or dining area feel like a hassle. I felt that the owner’s personal tastes strongly shaped everything, without much consideration from a guest’s perspective. Disappointing. The female staff member who welcomed us seemed to be doing her best on her own throughout. Thank you for seeing us off so politely as well.

    This is feedback about the stay.

    It was a warm day despite being February. The main building is a traditional thatched-roof house, and the annex where we stayed is built on a mountainside, which we reached by transferring between an electric cart and a monorail. This is an innovative Accommodation that blends old charm with modern Facility features. We were very satisfied with the Japanese meals and the large Onsen bath as well. The hospitality was thoughtful and excellent. It’s an Accommodation we would like to visit again. Thank you.

    A peaceful Accommodation where time flows quietly

    A dignified entrance that feels like stepping back in time—every detail, from the beams and transoms to the doors, is wonderful. The Room was also spacious, with an irori hearth, a living area, and a bedroom. The Onsen was all ours without running into anyone! Perfect for history lovers and for relaxing and unwinding at a leisurely pace. Thank you very much. Lastly, it would have been even better if the Room lighting could have been a bit brighter.

    On the day of our stay, we were hit by the biggest cold wave of the season, but after exchanging emails with the Travel Support team, we arrived safely. Just like when we visited shortly after it first opened, the grand entrance gate was very impressive. There was also a new building. We took a cart and a ropeway up to our room on the 5th floor—our grandchildren must have been amazed. We were able to relax, enjoy the Onsen, and have delicious meals. With “karaoke” and “yokai hunting,” I think our grandchildren were very satisfied. Every time we met a staff member, they spoke to us with a kind word, creating a warm and homey atmosphere. Lastly, I forgot my phone charging cable and you kindly contacted me about it, but later I realized I had also left items such as Kawaba yogurt in the refrigerator. I would have appreciated it if you could have checked inside the refrigerator as well. Next time, I would like to visit during a nicer season. Thank you very much for taking care of us.

    An attraction-like experience!

    Moving around the property by vehicle or taking the cable car was fun, but on cold nights, I didn’t want to ride (or wait for) a vehicle, so I ended up walking. The bath was far away. The Room was spacious with features like a walk-in closet (though I didn’t use it for changing), high ceilings, and an irori fireplace, making it comfortable and relaxing. It would have been even better if I could watch TV while lying in bed (but due to the layout of the room, it wasn’t possible).

    Fully accessible for all guests

    We stayed here for a family trip with my grandmother, who has difficulty walking. We were looking for a Room with a private bath due to her condition, and not only did we find that, but the hotel also provided electric carts to move to the dining area, wheelchair rentals, and attentive support from the staff. This made our stay incredibly comfortable. Despite it being challenging for her to travel far, my grandmother seemed very happy enjoying the Room with a great view and delicious meals.     I recently stayed for one night and two days. I enjoyed my time in a spacious room that offered an experience beyond the ordinary. There were a few minor concerns, but nothing significant enough to mention in a Review, and overall, I was satisfied. However, one issue stood out: during dinner, I ordered a shochu soda with a pickled plum added for an additional charge as informed beforehand. Upon returning home and checking the receipt, I noticed that "plum juice" was charged at 660 yen. Adding one small pickled plum to an 880-yen cocktail resulting in a total of 1,540 yen seems unreasonable (200 yen would seem more appropriate). This is not about the amount but rather about common sense. It may have been my fault for not confirming the price on-site; however, considering this is an Accommodation charging over 50,000 yen per person per night even during peak season, it felt inappropriate to question such details at that moment. The surrounding scenery was extraordinary and gave us a sense of escape from daily life; we even talked about visiting again in summer on our way back home. However, I hope you understand how such trivial matters could deter repeat guests. Lastly—this is not a complaint—I received sake as part of IKYU's Reservation benefits but thought it would have been better if provided at check-in instead of check-out so we could enjoy it during our stay (and if intended for takeaway purposes, providing it in something like a paper bag instead of bare packaging would be appreciated).

    I made a Reservation...

    I made a Reservation after watching Tabi Salad. It felt like visiting a samurai residence—like stepping back in time. Since it was brought all the way from Yonezawa in Yamagata, the thatched roof was wonderful. There were carts and a monorail, and just riding them made me feel like a kid again—it was exciting. I stayed in an annex, so the dining area and baths were quite far; it might be tough for pregnant guests or those with back pain. The bath in the Room also took a long time to fill with hot water, so I rated it 4 stars—I got cold while waiting. The food was delicious and the service was great. Next time, I’d like to stay in the main building in a different season as well.

    We were very satisfied.

    We stumbled upon this accommodation by chance, but the location was absolutely perfect. It was nestled in a mountain village surrounded by rice fields. The nearby scenery was also beautiful. The accommodation itself was well-built and impressive. Both the service and meals were excellent. Having stayed at various onsen areas and accommodations, this one stood out as exceptional overall. We would love to visit again in a different season.

    Wonderful Accommodation

    It was a truly wonderful accommodation that made us feel like we had traveled back in time to old Japan. Regarding the food, I had low expectations due to some negative reviews about the quality, but... The dishes from Gunma exceeded my expectations and were very delicious! The room was newer and cleaner than I had imagined. However, perhaps because of the high ceiling, it took a while to warm up even with the heater on. I hope this can be improved a bit.

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

    The room, meals, and service were all excellent. The accommodation was clean and comfortable, and the staff were very pleasant. One concern was the dining area. Four rooms, including ours, had meals in a large hall divided by partitions. However, due to the material of the hall, voices echoed clearly. The sound of small children’s voices reverberated, making it difficult to enjoy a calm and relaxed meal. Breakfast had the same arrangement. It seemed that other guests dined in private-like rooms. Additionally, some staff provided explanations about the dishes while others did not. It appeared that each staff member focused solely on their assigned serving tasks without overseeing overall progress. As a result, there were instances where miso soup and pickles arrived after we finished our rice, which was slightly disappointing. Other than that, it was truly a wonderful accommodation where I would love to stay again!

    We stayed at this wonderful accommodation as a couple at the end of summer. The cart and monorail, the high-ceilinged room, the restroom with a suikinkutsu feature, the museum-like collection of rare items, the onsen with a gentle aroma of hot springs for relaxing baths, and the delicious local cuisine—all were truly satisfying. However, what stood out most was hearing the sound of wind chimes while gazing absentmindedly at rice fields from the second floor of Nagayamon. It was such a charming accommodation that made us appreciate these little moments.

    The views from the rooms and the observatory are truly stunning, showcasing Japan's traditional landscapes. The interior and guest rooms are adorned with numerous artworks, including ukiyo-e prints and folk crafts, offering endless visual enjoyment. Despite the scorching heat at the nearby roadside station Kawaba Denen Plaza before reaching the accommodation, it was surprisingly cooler here even though it's just a short distance away—perhaps due to being surrounded by countryside? The mornings and evenings were so cool that it felt like autumn, which was another pleasant surprise. I had a very comfortable stay.

    A rare accommodation not found in modern accommodations

    Satoyama scenery, thatched roof, and countryside cuisine. This accommodation offers a rare rural experience and landscape not found in other accommodations. It’s one of the few places that brings such peace to your heart and reminds you of being Japanese. It feels like a place where Totoro might appear at any moment. Traditional hearths, thick wooden pillars, shoji screens, and chests are still used under the thatched roof today. From the room's window, you can see beautiful rice fields—sunlit paddies glowing in golden hues. Being slightly elevated provides stunning views with dragonflies flying around abundantly. Staying in this room makes you forget about time entirely. The meals may feel slightly small in portion but are delicious local dishes: river fish, konjac jelly, shabu-shabu hot pot, rice... I forgot its name but loved the soup dish served during dinner (soba noodles? Kitsune?). I still crave it even now! The food perfectly complements the charming thatched-roof setting and enhances its flavors even more. For our entire family, this has become our favorite accommodation ever! If Totoro shows up here someday—please let us know; we’ll come running!

    Family Trip

    We stayed at the accommodation for a family trip. The parking lot is diagonally across from the main building, but as soon as we arrived, a staff member from the ryokan greeted us with a cart and helped carry our luggage. It was surprising for the children to see how they knew we had arrived even though we parked away from the ryokan. The welcome drink service and smooth check-in process with clear explanations were truly impressive. To get to our room, we used an automated cart, which delighted the children. The room's private open-air bath and indoor bath are not onsen but offer adjustable temperature and heat retention for comfort. The room was spacious enough for our family of five, leaving us very satisfied. There are two onsen facilities available in this accommodation, and since there are only 18 rooms in total, it was sometimes like having a private onsen depending on the time of use. Both onsens have different water qualities and were excellent in their own way. Meals were served in private dining rooms for both dinner and breakfast, ensuring privacy during meals. Dinner consisted of kaiseki cuisine with every ingredient being exceptionally delicious; especially noteworthy was the rice cooked in a traditional pot—it was outstanding! While there were limited sake options on the drink menu, other beverages were abundant and satisfying. Perhaps by chance this time around, all staff members—from those who welcomed us at arrival to those assisting within the facility or serving meals—provided dedicated service that made us feel secure throughout our stay. Even during checkout in the morning, we received seamless assistance from one of these staff members who carried our luggage to our car while waving goodbye until it disappeared from view—a thoughtful gesture that left an impression. In recent times when prices rise but service quality declines at so-called luxury ryokans or hotels claiming high standards by name alone—we experienced truly exceptional service here after quite some time! This allowed us to enjoy an incredibly satisfying stay. The excellent employee training program combined with each staff member’s high level of professionalism is what makes this ryokan remarkable. Surrounded by tranquil rural landscapes along with views from its courtyard or observatory deck—and seasonal scenery visible right from your room—this accommodation offers an experience deeply connected to nature's beauty throughout all seasons. We look forward eagerly visiting again during another season next time! A heartfelt thank you goes out sincerely towards every single staff member involved during this visit!

    It was the second night of a Multiple Night Stay, and we made good use of the suite room with an open-air bath that even came with a washer-dryer. The meals were based on the basic Plan, but there were fewer local ingredients, so it wasn't as satisfying as the first night.

    My father is overjoyed.

    We stayed at the accommodation to celebrate my father's 88th birthday. We greatly appreciated being informed in advance that we could change to a room without stairs, considering my father uses a cane. In the end, we stayed on the 5th floor of the annex with stairs as originally reserved, but my father was pleasantly surprised and thoroughly enjoyed using the cart and monorail for transportation. He said with curiosity, "This is the first time I've experienced such a Ryokan!" The yellow celebratory vest for his milestone birthday was thoughtfully prepared, and we were able to take commemorative photos. The food was delicious, and he truly enjoyed himself. The Onsen left our skin feeling smooth as well. My father has already requested to visit again. Thank you very much!

    It was a wonderful experience.

    Perfect in every way. Exceeded all expectations. Stayed as a family of five with two middle schoolers and one elementary school child. The natural flowing Onsen was incredibly relaxing, and the interior was adorned with tasteful decorations throughout, creating a charming atmosphere. It truly felt like an escape from everyday life. The staff were always smiling and promptly addressed any concerns we had. The meals were, needless to say, delicious. Our elementary school child was captivated by the "Yokai Hunt" event, creating unforgettable summer memories. What helped us the most was having a washer-dryer in our room—this is the first accommodation we've stayed at that offered such convenience! The amenities were excellent as well, making it hard to leave. We would love to visit again during another season! An exceptional accommodation indeed!

    A thatched roof visible from the parking lot hints at a transition to another world. Check-in in a spacious area and cart transportation to the room exceeded expectations. The accommodation offered a festival experience with activities like ring toss, fishing games, and archery, which delighted the children.     A very charming accommodation

    This accommodation offers a unique experience with its traditional thatched-roof rooms, a small museum showcasing historical armor and various antique tools, playful carts for transportation, and a gondola that takes you to an observation deck. The intricate Unryu wood carving by Hidari Jingoro is particularly impressive and worth seeing. The onsen features natural hot spring water with a comfortable temperature and a faint sulfur scent, which was very pleasant. However, the private open-air bath in the room is not an onsen, so we chose not to use it. As for the meals, while the rice cooked in an iron pot was delicious, some dishes like the sashimi were slightly dry and overall average. Hospitality could also be improved; during our meal, champagne glasses were left on the serving table without proper attention given to guests. Additionally, there seemed to be a musty smell from the refrigerator affecting the glasses provided. We hope these aspects can be improved for future stays!

    Impressed by the building and the room.

    Upon arrival at the parking lot, we were warmly greeted and offered a welcome drink. An autonomous cart transported us within the premises to our thatched-roof Room, which was designed to preserve the charm of a traditional Japanese house. The cleanliness and care in maintaining the building were evident. The property also featured displays of armor and items from the Edo period, offering a small museum-like experience. The garden was well-maintained, showcasing excellent management. Even after check-out, we were escorted back to the parking lot while being provided with sightseeing information. Watching a staff member wave both hands until our car disappeared from view left such an impression on us that my partner and I remarked how rare this kind of experience is on our way home.

    I truly enjoyed the Onsen here. Last autumn, I stayed in Kusatsu, but the Onsen here is far superior. The staff were incredibly kind and I am very grateful for their hospitality. I was lucky to visit during the perfect season when the cherry blossoms were in full bloom. The view from the observation deck is unforgettable. Next time, I hope to bring my grandchild to enjoy a ride on the monorail or cart together. Thank you very much!
