    Family trip part 3. It was a prestigious Japanese Ryokan.

    Stayed for 6 months at Yamashiro Onsen in Kaga. Room: Stayed in Room 201 with a semi-open-air bath. Thank you for providing the baby futon. The room had a luxurious Japanese-style design with a low bed in the bedroom. It was nice to experience tatami after such a long time. Service: At the lobby lounge near the entrance, sparkling wine and beer (tanrei) were available. Being able to enjoy beer after bathing was great! If I may suggest, considering the price range, regular beer instead of happoshu would be preferable. Also, it would have been nice to have alcoholic beverages in the room's refrigerator; soft drinks were complimentary though. Coffee was available outside the room via a shared coffee machine. Onsen: Personally loved it! The onsen featured natural hot spring water flowing directly from its source and provided wonderful warmth throughout my body. The two-tiered bathtub attached to our room allowed alternating baths, which we enjoyed multiple times! The lukewarm bath was perfect for introducing our baby to their first onsen experience with natural spring water! Additionally, the special "Tori-yu" bathhouse was amazing—alternating baths here also warmed me deeply and offered profound relaxation; having it all to myself enhanced satisfaction even more! Dinner: We enjoyed dinner leisurely in a private dining space next door to our room. Each dish of Japanese cuisine was meticulously prepared and deliciously crafted—the vibrant presentation of Hassun dishes paired perfectly with sake while Gasu shrimp added delight too; Nodoguro rice bowl tasted fantastic as well! Sake: A wide selection focused on Ishikawa’s local sake varieties included notable options like Noguchi Naohiko Sake Institute (which I’d previously read about onboard an airline magazine). However, some local sakes seemed slightly overpriced—hesitated over Junmai Daiginjo due solely due pricing concerns despite interest otherwise... Value-for-money: While not necessarily aiming toward affordability per se given expectations beforehand regarding premium pricing tiers involved here overall comparative cost-effectiveness relative peers within similar brackets wasn’t particularly outstanding either yet nonetheless thoroughly satisfied experiencing Yamashiro Onsen’s prestigious traditional ryokan ambiance firsthand ultimately made worthwhile trip altogether

    A long-established Ryokan representing Hokuriku.

    We stayed for one night to celebrate a birthday, as our family had always wanted to visit. The art within the ryokan goes beyond Rosanjin and Suda Seika. The exquisite evening kaiseki meal, paired with carefully selected wines offered at relatively reasonable prices, was truly enjoyable. The three types of large baths in a serene environment were exceptional. It truly felt like staying at a Michelin-starred ryokan. Araya Totoan is recognized as a member of the World Association of Cultural Accommodation Studies and is considered one of the leaders in Japanese ryokan culture. I hope such establishments can showcase Japan's beautifully refined ryokan services that rival those of luxury hotels represented by international chains. Otherwise, it might lead people to choose Michelin-starred restaurants for dinner and accommodations like The Ritz-Carlton instead. To be honest, I felt there are areas where Araya Totoan’s service could be further refined as an example of luxury ryokans. This is just my personal impression, but I hope it serves as constructive feedback in some way.

    Triple time

    This was our first time staying at Araya with our family of three. It has been a while since we encountered a Ryokan that excelled in hot springs, facilities, and cuisine. We were extremely satisfied and would love to visit again during the crab season. Thank you very much!

    A wonderful mother-daughter trip.

    I visited with my daughter who lives abroad, and it was a wonderful accommodation with impeccable taste and care in every corner. From the warm welcome with matcha tea and traditional sweets to the beautifully presented meals, everything was thoughtfully crafted to delight both the eyes and palate. The accommodation is also filled with works by Kitaoji Rosanjin, offering an opportunity to appreciate Japanese art, which made our stay even more special. Next time, I would love to visit with my girlfriends. Thank you so much for your exceptional hospitality!

    Completely satisfied

    We stayed at the accommodation with my mother (in her 80s), my sister, and myself to show appreciation to our mother. When making the reservation, I mentioned that "my mother has difficulty walking," and we were touched by the thoughtful arrangements both in the email after completing the reservation and on the day of our stay. The room was arranged to minimize walking distances within the facility for my mother. Thank you so much for your kindness. 【Facility】 The room, hallways, dining area, and large public bath were all impeccably clean. There was nothing unpleasant at all, which left us very impressed. 【Onsen】 Perhaps due to its location in front of Kosoyu Onsen, the water quality was excellent. Both my mother and sister commented on how smooth their skin felt after bathing. I also enjoyed using all of the large public baths during our stay. 【Meals】 Dinner featured local ingredients and seasonal dishes that were absolutely delicious. Although there was a slightly large amount of food served at dinner, both my mother and sister were very satisfied with it. The miso soup served during breakfast was hearty and delicious—it really woke up our bodies in a refreshing way! It offered a unique experience compared to many other Onsen Ryokans. 【Staff】 Even though different staff members attended us during dinner and breakfast, they answered all our questions about tableware or meals accurately. We truly appreciated their knowledgeability and courteous service. Our entire family left completely satisfied from this experience; we hope to visit again when an opportunity arises! Most importantly, seeing how happy it made my mother brought us immense joy—thank you so much for everything! This time around—considering it would be cold—we opted for a semi-open-air room...

    Stability

    Maintaining a high reputation over the years holds significance. However, the two-level bath had an issue where the upper level was hot and the lower level was lukewarm, making it difficult to achieve a comfortable temperature. (As a workaround, I transferred water from the upper level to the lower one before entering.)

    It was a wonderful Ryokan with excellent hot springs and cuisine!

    A prestigious Ryokan that feels on par with Asaba. One of the few places where you can truly experience the timeless beauty of Japan. The natural hot spring was breathtaking, and the exquisite dishes served in carefully preserved, stunning tableware were unforgettable. Even though we thought crab season had ended, we were delighted to be served a large hairy crab, making our stay absolutely perfect. We would love to visit again! Thank you so much to the Okami-san, Nakai-san, and all the staff for your thoughtful hospitality.

    Everything felt like a work of art.

    It was a very comfortable stay. We made a reservation during the winter to enjoy crab, and not only was the main crab dish excellent, but the other creative dishes were also exquisite. The view from the open-air bath was wonderful. I could relax while gazing at the greenery and enjoying the scent of cypress and plants. On the day of our visit, I wore a kimono, and when we were shown to our room, they kindly provided hangers for kimonos. The service was truly satisfying. This is personal preference, but as someone who admires Isamu Noguchi's lighting designs, I was thrilled to see them in person. It felt like being in an art museum—a truly beautiful accommodation. I will definitely visit again.

    Honest feedback

    Having stayed here before, I was really looking forward to this visit. However, there was one thing that caught my attention this time. For dinner, instead of having it in the room, we opted for a private dining space. The staff attending to us was a young woman. When we wanted to order drinks, there was no bell to call her, and even when we called out verbally, she didn’t come. Even when the children left the room to find someone, no one was available. Eventually, we had to go all the way to the kitchen area before receiving assistance. When I asked how best to handle this next time, I was told: "Please let us know when we're bringing your dishes." As a result, we couldn’t enjoy our drinks at our preferred timing. Additionally, the timing of serving dishes felt more aligned with their schedule rather than ours; even if previous dishes were still on the table unfinished, new ones kept coming out quickly. By dessert time, they mentioned: "It’s almost closing time; may we bring it now?" If starting dinner at 7 PM leads to such rushed service due to timing constraints on their end—despite us not being late—it might be better not to offer that start time as an option. That said though—this is truly an excellent ryokan! Everything else met or exceeded expectations. The room felt even cleaner than before and the staff member who guided us there provided outstanding service!

    The hot water was very satisfying.

    The accommodation day was sunny, and snow began to fall at night, creating a stunning winter landscape the next morning. Both the open-air onsen in the snowy scenery and the private room bath were exceptional, not only for the water but also for the view and atmosphere. The meals seemed carefully prepared, including the presentation of dishes; however, as a couple in our 60s, we found the portions small (we wonder if younger guests would feel satisfied). During this trip to Hokuriku, we stayed at other onsen ryokans as well but did not experience such an issue at any other facility, so we don't believe it’s because we are "big eaters."

    Let's go eat crab!!

    We were completely satisfied with the service, meals, and onsen at this property. The crab for dinner was excellent, and the white rice for breakfast was also very delicious. Disappointing points: The combination of the welcome drink matcha and the accompanying sweets was not ideal. Japanese sweets might be a better choice.

    As imagined

    This time, with the theme of "a trip to heal our parents," we searched for a Property with the best Onsen and crab. Honestly, it was quite an expensive setting for us as a couple, and we were quite worried, but it was truly great that we decided to visit without compromise. The bath, the cuisine, the attentive service of the staff, everything was wonderful and very moving. The Onsen in the Room, with its natural hot spring water, also impressed our parents. Without a doubt, it is the best Stays we have ever visited.

    As always, thank you very much for the delicious food and attentive hospitality. Although I can only visit once or twice a year, I am always healed by the warm-hearted service. Of course, the Onsen is excellent, and even though it's just a one-night, two-day stay, I can truly relax.

    Frank opinion.

    I stayed in the special room "Go-Jin" associated with the Maeda family. I originally wanted to stay in the Arisugawa annex, but it was closed during the winter season. The room, entrance, and lobby, which exuded a sense of history, were very lovely. The onsen in the large public bath had excellent water quality and was a very nice open-air bath. There were a few disappointing points. The bed seemed to be a single size and felt a bit narrow. As for the meals, there were few dishes that impressed me, which was a bit disappointing. Additionally, this was a critical issue, but the room's bath seemed uncleaned, as there was trash like duct tape in the bathtub and a lot of hair attached. After discovering that, I lost the desire to use the room's bathtub, and the stay was ruined. I thought this was unacceptable for a stay costing nearly 200,000 yen per night. It is very disappointing.

    The large public bath was excellent.

    The large public bath was very nice. In many Ryokan, the water in the large public bath is too hot for me, and I often have to get out quickly, but here the bath was spacious, and by moving to the bridge area, I could enjoy it at a comfortable temperature for a long time. The lukewarm meditation bath was also nice for a long soak. Additionally, it was impressive to see art displayed in areas where humidity was noticeable. The crab was, of course, delicious. It was so good that I ended up drinking too much. However, considering the price paid, I would prefer beer instead of happoshu at the post-bath area, and I think the Room amenities could be a bit more substantial. Also, the table was low and a bit difficult to use.

    The crab is not delicious.

    Is it just us?! The crab is not tasty at all! It's watery and not sweet! First, the prepared crab appears! Wait, something's wrong! Usually, you see the tagged crab before it's prepared, but the older staff member said, "This is normal at our Stays." The crab tasted so bad, it seemed like it was frozen after being dismantled! In the photo of a friend who visited this Property a week before me, there was a tagged crab before it was prepared... The other meals were delicious, and the young staff and the bath were excellent, but it's very disappointing, and I want a refund for the crab! It's not worth over 200,000 yen for two people at all. I will never visit again!

    A high-class traditional Japanese Ryokan

    The property was satisfying in all aspects: service, meals, and onsen. The entire facility is tatami-floored without slippers, making it very comfortable for the feet. My mother, who has trouble walking, was able to walk with ease. We were very satisfied with the quality and quantity of the Kanou crab. Negative Points: The open-air bath in the room is cold and harsh at this time of year. It would be helpful to have an enclosure, even just for the washing area. The free coffee on the second floor is a trendy, frothy, strong-tasting type, which is difficult for the elderly to drink. The parking lot is a bit far (perhaps due to the location). Aside from these three points, everything, including responses via LINE and phone, was perfect.

    Enjoy the Luxury of Kaga Hyakumangoku

    I was able to enjoy the best hospitality in Japan. The special room "Ojin no Ma" associated with the Maeda family was relocated with the original layout. The colors and decor were wonderful, and both the semi-open-air bath in the room with natural hot spring water and the large public bath were excellent in terms of water quality and quantity. At night, the large tagged snow crab was a blissful moment, whether as sashimi, grilled, or boiled, all overflowing with sweetness and umami. The seasonal kobako crab was also rich and exquisite, both the internal and external roe. Other dishes were also wonderful. I was deeply impressed by the thoughtfulness of everyone at the Stays. My mother was very pleased, and it became the best anniversary. I also thoroughly enjoyed myself. I will visit again.

    It was wonderful again this time.

    I have stayed several times in the past, and this time was also wonderful. I believe that a property with such high quality of both onsen and cuisine is rare in the whole country.     It was a hit after a long time.

    The Ryokan exceeded my expectations. First of all, the quality of service was the best I've ever experienced. The veteran staff proactively made thoughtful suggestions, and their words were very elegant. During meals, they skillfully incorporated local information into the conversation, which I found very interesting. Overall, the service was pleasant, and I was impressed by their professional skills. Additionally, the meals were high-level, with a wide variety of delicious dishes. The snacks, such as the wheat gluten mochi and sweet potato, were also exquisite, showcasing their excellent taste. Furthermore, the guest rooms and Facilities were very clean and tidy, and the beautiful courtyard left a good impression. Overall, I was very satisfied. It was much better than the Ryokan I visited last month at Relais & Châteaux. Please continue striving to be the No.1 Ryokan in the wider area.

    Wonderful hospitality and excellent cuisine.

    It was a wonderful inn, and I would love to visit again during crab season. The hospitality was excellent. The inn was clean and lovely. The food was perfect! Even though it wasn't crab season, every dish served was delicious and impressive. With a hot spring as well, it's a fantastic inn. I definitely want to visit again.

    60th birthday celebration

    With both of our children having left the nest, it felt a bit lonely to celebrate my wife's 60th birthday just the two of us, so we decided to enjoy a delicious meal together as a family for the first time in years at this inn. We were delighted by the inn's thoughtful preparation of a special meal for the occasion, from the dishes to the tableware. The food, including the ingredients, cooking, and presentation, was extremely satisfying. From the welcome to the farewell, the meticulous attention to detail and pleasantly unobtrusive service unique to Japanese inns allowed us to leave with a warm and refreshed feeling after many years. Our family was very pleased, and seeing my wife's happy face made me grateful to everyone at the inn. Thank you very much. We hope to visit again if we have the opportunity.
