Relax and unwind with a leisurely Hotel stay

I originally had a rental car Reservation, but my wife suggested using the Hotel’s Shuttle Service and the Hotel’s rental car instead. Thanks to the comfortable Shuttle Service and rental car, we were able to get around smoothly. I highly recommend this for anyone staying at Sankara Hotel—it saves both time and effort. The Hotel immediately lifted our spirits with the view from the entrance. The welcome drink and service briefing were also excellent. The sauna on our arrival day was outstanding—especially the design of the sauna room, and how we could do as much löyly as we wanted. Both temperature and humidity were perfectly balanced. The lemon water was delicious with just the right sweetness. Rinsing off quickly in the shower and then getting into the pool felt truly luxurious. The canopy daybed allowed us to relax outdoors without worrying about direct sunlight, and it was incredibly refreshing. However, during our second sauna session, an American guest used it continuously, so we couldn’t use it, which was disappointing. If you’re going to use a private sauna, I would have gladly paid an additional fee to secure use of a canopy daybed. I hope this will be considered in the future, including making it a paid option. Since many Western guests tend to stay by the poolside for long periods, I think it would be better to set time limits or add another area dedicated for sauna users. The Junior Suite Room had a comfortable size and elegant furnishings that felt very relaxing. There aren’t many Rooms available, but if one is open, I strongly recommend choosing it—it also makes getting around easier. The in-Room Onsen available 24 hours a day soothed our sore muscles after tours. We had dinner three times, and every meal was delicious. I wondered if three days of French cuisine might feel heavy, but each dish had subtle Japanese touches and was wonderful throughout. Every wine pairing matched beautifully as well. Champagne and wine prices were reasonable. The spa afterward was also very pleasant—especially the Thai traditional massage; it was my first time trying it and it felt great. We tried three different spa treatments in total, all exceeding expectations. After the Jomon Sugi tour in particular, I felt they were essential for relaxation and recovery. The Hotel’s library lounge also has an excellent drink selection that makes you want to stay awhile longer. The gift shop is well stocked with accessories—so much so that there’s hardly any need to go shopping elsewhere. Breakfast is buffet-style but can be enjoyed calmly in a quiet setting; especially nice are the breads that change daily. The return Shuttle Service was comfortable as well—we were able to enjoy an exceptional experience right up until the end of our stay.

I was finally able to visit after a year. I fully enjoyed Yakushima’s charm and was able to relax. The meals were, as always, absolutely delicious. Thank you very much.

    Highly satisfied

All the staff provided refined service, and the dining was of a very high standard, so we were extremely satisfied with our stay. Thank you very much! If the sauna had been a bit more reasonably priced, we would have liked to use it.

First time in Yakushima, third night stay

My friend and I stayed for one night and two days. That morning, we joined a river kayaking tour, and since there were no changing facilities near the river, I asked if it would be okay to arrive still wearing our wet wetsuits. They kindly agreed, which I truly appreciated. We were dropped off by the tour staff, and the moment we arrived, the breathtaking view of a beautiful infinity pool under a clear blue sky spread out before us—I couldn’t help but shout, “Wow, amazing!” We were shown to seats by the poolside, and even before checking in my friend said, “Wow… I should’ve brought my laptop. Next time we have to bring our laptops and stay longer for a workcation.” We were then shown to our Room. When I tried to open my suitcase, it wouldn’t open—an unexpected mishap—but after speaking with the butler right away they prepared an adorable tracksuit that could be worn over swimwear and arranged a rental car for us. Thanks to that, we were able to get it opened at a local gas station we had found in advance. For dinner, they prepared a handmade welcome plate inspired by the kayaking experience and the sea turtle nesting observation tour we had done—it was moving from the moment we sat down. Every dish was something new to us and absolutely delicious; in particular, I loved the peach sorbet served by the pastry chef. We got so caught up in eating and chatting that we stayed late, yet the chef still came out with a smile to see us off all the way until we boarded the golf cart back to our Room. The next morning we joined a kokedama (moss ball) workshop and enjoyed making one while learning all kinds of things about plants. I’ve forgotten the plant’s name now, but when I mentioned that I like tea, they also wrapped large leaves that can be enjoyed as tea together with my kokedama. We were probably the noisiest guests during our stay as just two people, yet everyone treated us with kindness until the very end—I’m nothing but grateful. Next time, I plan to bring my laptop and come back for a longer workcation stay.

    The meals are excellent.

Restaurant Okas was wonderful, with its atmosphere, staff service, and cuisine perfectly in harmony. While it is not an Onsen, the Room’s bath was also modern, spacious, and very satisfying.

Climbing that hill always makes me feel excited.

Last July, I stayed here and wrote a Review after breakfast on the day of departure titled “A Hotel That Gets Better with Age.” (1) There was weather-related trouble, but the recovery was truly moving. (2) From next year I would travel around Hokkaido and elsewhere, and return to Sankara in five years. As I got into the Alphard, they apologized again for another weather-related issue and handed me an envelope. A surprise— An unbelievable surprise… Before even reaching Yakushima Airport, I decided I would visit Sankara for the fourth time in 2026. Even four years in a row, the moment you enter the grounds and start walking up that hill, you can’t help but feel excited. The newly renovated Junior Suite this time was almost too comfortable—perfectly sized and extremely functional. And the bathroom you can use anytime is simply wonderful. The Facility has also been further renewed in places and improved so it feels both fresh and familiar—truly “getting better with age.” I also enjoyed an exceptional time at Okas and at the spa, making this another perfect trip. Ayana’s mackerel salad, eel dish, and charcoal-grilled Nakayama Kurogyu were all genuinely delicious. Finally: no matter how great the hardware is, if service is merely average, at this price point you won’t gain repeat guests. The butlers always respond with such care and sincerity that every stay feels comfortable. I won’t say much more this time (laugh), but thank you for yet another outstanding hospitality experience. To me, one night of service is just a point; from the second night onward it becomes a line. Staying only one night at Sankara feels like a waste. I’ll be back again in a few years—to feel that “line” (laugh).

    Make your special anniversary unforgettable.

Eleven years ago, I stayed at Manasabila for two nights with my sister. I never forgot how comfortable it was, so this time we visited again as a family of four to celebrate our golden wedding anniversary. When we arrived at the villa, the champagne was nicely chilled, and it was wonderful to have a bath available 24 hours a day. However, since we were only staying one night and had a packed schedule with the spa and dinner at OAKUS, we quickly took showers, went to the spa to relax our bodies, and then headed straight to OAKUS... Both the tableware and the dishes were beautifully presented—my son took tons of photos. Of course everything was delicious; my son who ordered the sommelier-recommended wine pairing and my older son who loves eating were both very satisfied. At the end, they brought out an anniversary celebration plate for us, and we took another family commemorative photo. Thank you for the wonderful meal! When we returned to our Room, there was a congratulatory message and towel-art swans displayed—we were amazed by how perfectly done they were. In the end, since we were a bit tipsy, we didn’t use the sauna. We stepped out onto the balcony, gazed at the star-filled sky in awe, and then went to sleep. It’s great that there are two bedrooms so four people can sleep comfortably without any extra beds. The next day our flight was early, so we went to Ayana for breakfast right when it opened at 6:45 a.m., but all of the food was already fully prepared. The egg dish and smoothie we ordered were brought promptly as well, so we could forget about the busy morning rush and enjoy breakfast at a relaxed pace. They brought our car up to the entrance for us; we received some bread as souvenirs; everyone saw us off; and then we left Sankara. It’s disappointing that although there are many Facilities and services to enjoy—and even Plans where you can simply relax at this Hotel—we couldn’t experience them all. At least I wish we could have stayed one more night. Still, thanks to all of your staff’s service and thoughtful care, it became a truly wonderful anniversary. Thank you very much.

    Outstanding hospitality.

Throughout our stay, the staff’s attentive hospitality made us feel truly comfortable. Every meal was delicious, with clear care taken in both the ingredients and presentation, making dining one of the highlights of our stay. In addition, the Room was stocked with drinks and snacks so we could relax at our leisure, allowing us to enjoy a luxurious Hotel stay experience. The amenities were also excellent, and we were impressed by how thoughtfully every detail had been considered. It was a wonderful stay that we would love to book again. We would also like to visit again in a different season.

    The staff are wonderful.

Even though it was only a two-night, three-day stay, every Hotel staff member we interacted with truly brought out the best of this Hotel. Their courteous and prompt service—professional without feeling overly formal—was very comfortable. The Accommodation is by no means cheap, but the all-inclusive-style services are extensive and made our stay very pleasant. The Room was spacious, and the large bath where you can fully stretch your legs is a unique highlight that made us want to soak again and again. We also enjoyed the ticket service that lets you use the Onsen at affiliated Hotels. We would love to visit again.

    Called to Yakushima

On May 3, our flight from Haneda to Kagoshima was delayed due to poor visibility; after circling overhead, we were able to land on the second attempt. We then switched to a high-speed ferry to Yakushima, but arrived much later than scheduled. We stayed in close contact with the Hotel throughout, and they kindly picked us up at Miyanoura Port in the Hotel’s private vehicle, allowing us to check in safely around 5:00 p.m. Locals say that only those “called” can make it to Yakushima, and we felt truly grateful for our good fortune. In addition to the Hotel’s quick and flexible support regarding our changing arrival time and the switch from airport to port, every staff member was friendly, welcoming, and far beyond what we had imagined. Dinner was exceptional: exquisite French cuisine served with beautiful quality and presentation, enjoyed at the counter with lush green trees right in front of us—an unforgettable experience. This was our first stay at a five-star Hotel, and everything was high quality; it became a deeply satisfying trip. We would absolutely love to stay again. Thank you very much. We stayed during Golden Week 2026 for two nights/three days in a Junior Suite.

    This is a wonderful ...

This is a wonderful Hotel no matter how many times I visit. The staff’s hospitality and service are impeccable, and the food is truly delicious. Yakushima itself is amazing, but this Hotel lets you feel the happiness of falling asleep embraced by a lush green forest. The renewed bath and other Facilities are easy to use, and the Room has become even more comfortable to stay in. It is the Hotel I have stayed at most often in Japan, and also my favorite Hotel in Japan.

    The Finest Accommodation

Travel is my hobby, and I’ve visited destinations all across the whole country, but this Accommodation is my personal “ultimate stay.” I love it and have stayed here multiple times. While the Accommodation Fee is not inexpensive, everything—dining, Facility offerings, and service—is outstanding. The cuisine in particular is truly top-tier: not only the main creative French course, but also the wine pairings and even the bread at breakfast are exceptional. The hospitality is also excellent, with thoughtful attention to detail. For example, when I pass by the front desk after dinner, they will take me back to my Room by electric cart without me even stating my room number—in other words, the staff recognize each guest’s face and room number. There are many such considerate touches throughout every stay, and I’m always impressed. I also used the spa; they focused on areas of tension tailored to me, and I felt it was an excellent treatment. You have already earned Michelin stars, and I’m excited to hear you’re aiming even higher. When I visit Yakushima again, I will definitely stay here.

    A Hotel with Exceptional Hospitality

We chose Sankara Hotel for my mother’s birthday trip. We exchanged emails in advance, and they prepared a birthday dessert plate at dinner. When we returned to our Room after dinner, they had made a towel-art cake for us. A Happy Birthday song was also playing on the TV, which truly moved us. The guest Room used plenty of cedar and felt very soothing. The bath was also a 24-hour circulating bath, so we could bathe anytime, which we really appreciated. We received a cedar brush as a keepsake and will cherish it. Our flight was canceled and we ended up staying only one night, but they took wonderful care of us. It became a very special memory. My mother was so touched that she wrote a thank-you letter to the staff—something she has never done before despite all our travels. She seemed to truly love it. Thank you very much.

    The Best Resort Hotel

We stayed for one night on our last day in Yakushima. The Room was even more comfortable than we expected, with nothing lacking, and the turndown service and the thoughtful 25th wedding anniversary celebration at dinner were truly wonderful. Although we made an affordable Reservation knowing that lounge service was unavailable due to renovations, not only were there services in the lounge and by the poolside, but drinks in the Room (except wine) were also inclusive, so we could enjoy an aperitif. I wasn’t feeling my best at dinner and couldn’t finish everything, but there was a great variety on the menu, and we appreciated the sommelier’s careful explanations and delicious selections. Breakfast was also excellent—there were more breads than we could possibly finish, and every one of them was delicious. The only minor point was that the coffee we requested for after the meal was served early on, and by the time the ordered soup and egg dish arrived, we had already finished all of our bread. Above all, what impressed us most was the Hotel’s location—the breathtaking view when we arrived and stood at the entrance—and especially the large bath in our Room with 24-hour circulating water. It was such a wonderful Hotel that it made us feel there’s no need to travel to overseas resorts anymore.

The Best Stay in Every Way

This is my first time writing a Review. Before the trip, we exchanged emails and I shared my requests and planned activities; everything was well understood, and I had a very pleasant stay. Since I stayed for two nights, I had dinner at Ayana and Okas, and both were excellent. After telling them my wine preferences at Ayana on the first night, I was surprised to find that this information had been shared with Okas the next day! At Okas in particular, I was able to hear directly from the chef about the dishes, and their passion really came through—it made the evening even more enjoyable, and the food tasted even better. Breakfast was delicious across the board, but especially the bread: its quality and variety were the best I have ever experienced during any stay. When visiting Okawa Falls, they drove me to the nearest bus stop by car. Since it looked like it might rain, I asked if I could borrow an umbrella as I got into the car—but one had already been prepared inside. I was impressed by such thoughtful attention to detail. Part of the Hotel was under renovation with some scaffolding in place, but it did not bother me much. Also, when ordering drinks at the restaurant or purchasing souvenirs in the lounge, I asked to charge them to my Room; there was no need to confirm my Room number or sign anything, yet everything was accurately posted at checkout. It impressed me that they clearly remembered my face and name as well as my Room number. In any case, every staff member’s service was outstanding; the food was exceptional; and even the starry sky and moon were unbelievably beautiful—without a doubt this was the best Hotel I have ever stayed at. Thank you very much.

Hospitality may vary from person to person, but overall it is excellent.

Overall, it was a good stay, but I felt there were some inconsistencies in hospitality. The first staff member who assisted us seemed experienced, but was actually new, and there were several moments of uncertainty in terms of service. I am not sure it was the right stage for them to be placed in a guest-facing role. On the other hand, many of the staff were extremely courteous and attentive, and the stay itself was comfortable. It was also impressive to see everyone working with such energy. There were also a few issues: we received an explanation on-site that differed from what had been confirmed by phone in advance, and a disposable brush provided in the room had hair tangled in it that appeared to be from a previous guest. However, since we stayed at a special rate during the renovation period, these were within an acceptable range. What I found particularly problematic was how our restaurant Reservation during our Multiple Night Stay was handled. We had reserved okas for the first night and ayana for the second night, but at the end of the room briefing we were told unilaterally: “ayana is under maintenance on the second day, so we will change both days to okas.” I do not know if this was considered an upgrade and therefore thought to be positive; however, changing Reservation details without prior explanation or consent felt very uncomfortable. An email one week earlier indicated everything would proceed as planned, which made this feel even more sudden. When we requested swapping the dates instead, they adjusted it for us—but if we had not spoken up, it might have been changed as-is. For that reason, I did not feel our choices as guests were sufficiently respected. Because you had been so polite and thorough via email correspondence, it was disappointing that—if this had been decided beforehand—it was not shared with us earlier. Although there were flight cancellations during our trip, I believe they are unrelated to this matter. I did not raise this on-site because it seemed likely that staff members who were not directly involved would end up apologizing instead; therefore I am writing it here. The Facility and most of your staff are wonderful, and it is an appealing place that makes me want to return. The food quality at both ayana and okas was excellent, and service from the restaurant staff was flawless. We were very satisfied with both breakfast and dinner. Despite any inconvenience caused by our flight cancellation situation (which affected our schedule), we truly appreciate how warmly you treated us. There were a few points of concern as noted above; aside from those issues overall satisfaction with our stay was high.

    We visited in early ...

We visited in early November to celebrate our wedding anniversary. From the Reservation process to departure, we received kind and thoughtful support, which made us excited even before arriving. The hospitality was exceptional from the moment we were picked up at the airport, making our stay incredibly comfortable. With only 29 Rooms on such a vast property, it exceeded all of our expectations and provided an extraordinary experience. After returning home, it felt like waking up from a long and wonderful dream. We absolutely want to visit again. This time was a 2-night stay, but next time we plan to take a longer break for an extended visit. We're also looking forward to seeing the newly renovated suite Rooms! On the second day, after returning from trekking, we were delighted by their thoughtful preparation of a bath timed perfectly for us—it truly touched our hearts. The meals were not only delicious but also surprising; they prepared completely different menus for each night of our stay! The spa was outstanding as well; the staff's skills provided ultimate relaxation. While being both an auberge and Hotel, their hospitality resembled that of Japan's finest Ryokan. Thank you so much for creating such wonderful memories!

From the time of the reservation, all matters such as food allergies, Yakushima tours, necessary rental items for the tour, arrival and departure pick-up were handled via email. During our stay, we were constantly cared for and had a very relaxing experience. I would love to visit again.

    Experience the finest hospitality.

This was my second visit, following my trip in February. Last time, I couldn't go trekking to Jomon Sugi due to snow and switched to Shiratani Unsuikyo. This time, I came back for another challenge. I was assigned the same Room as last time, which made me feel like coming home and allowed me to relax before the challenge. The excitement started with the airport pick-up service. Upon arriving at the Hotel, seeing the garden pool and surrounding mountains lifted my spirits even more. What makes this place exceptional is the staff's attentive and pleasant service—every team member works diligently, which left a deep impression on me. The spa treatments I received right after arrival and on departure day were so relaxing that I almost fell asleep! The dinner menu during my two-night stay was different each evening, which amazed me as well! On trekking day, despite leaving at 4:30 AM for an early start, they prepared breakfast with bread and fruit for us and even saw us off so warmly. When we returned from trekking safely, they had already filled our bath with warm water—a thoughtful gesture that meant so much after a tiring day. Although I couldn’t finish dessert during dinner due to exhaustion (my apologies!), they kindly brought it up to my Room later so I could enjoy it at leisure—thank you very much! There’s still so much of Yakushima’s depth left unexplored; I'd love to visit again in the future—not only staying in the main building but also experiencing a villa stay next time. Words cannot fully express how grateful I am—thank you from the bottom of my heart. I look forward to returning again!

The staff were very friendly, and although I couldn't relax much due to my flight schedule, I had a very comfortable stay. The desserts made by the pastry chef were incredibly delicious. I liked the pajamas in the Room so much that I purchased them to take home, but later realized they were made of a different fabric than the ones provided during my stay, which was slightly disappointing.

    Accommodation with the Finest Hospitality

I persuaded my husband to take a trip to Yakushima for my 60th birthday celebration. We chose SANKARA HOTEL & SPA Yakushima. The shuttle service from the airport provided us with useful information about Yakushima, which was very helpful. We were deeply moved by the hospitality throughout the accommodation. After our meal, they prepared a special celebration for my 60th birthday, creating unforgettable memories. This has become an accommodation we would love to visit again. Overall, I had a very positive impression, but I would like to share my honest thoughts. I was very satisfied with the room and meals. The breakfast bread, in particular, was exceptional. When I asked about it, I learned that the staff starts baking around 5 a.m., which is truly appreciated. The most disappointing aspect was upon arriving at the accommodation after enduring fatigue from navigating through typhoon effects and volcanic ash from Shinmoedake; even when check-in time arrived, there was no call for us to proceed. Early check-in (depending on availability) was included as a benefit but was not possible this time, so we gave up on that. However, how could there be an error regarding the scheduled check-in time? Yakushima is not an easily accessible destination. Now that my visit has ended, my lingering thought is simply wishing I could have relaxed in the room even one or two minutes earlier to recover from exhaustion.

There were many good points, but some aspects ruined the experience...

Stayed for two nights to relax after trekking. Positive Points: - The villa had a unique and extraordinary atmosphere, especially the forest view from the terrace (though not all rooms seem to have this). - Excellent hospitality: they kindly provided room service breakfast, gave us plasters, disinfectant for potential leech bites, and more. - The starry sky visible from the pool was beautiful. The system allowing drinks from the lounge at the pool and the bonfire lounge were also great. - Laundry facilities included nets for delicate clothing, making it convenient to wash stylish outfits. - Dinner on the second night at the restaurant on the second floor was professional in both taste and staff service. Negative Points: - The bath temperature was initially set at 32°C upon check-in, so we couldn’t use it right away. It took a long time to heat up due to its large size, meaning we couldn’t enjoy it before dinner despite being tired from trekking. We were disappointed as reviews mentioned "a ready bath upon check-in," but there was no apology when we pointed this out. - On our first night’s dinner at the first-floor restaurant, a group of guests were loudly noisy like in an izakaya (Japanese pub). Only paid water options were offered until we asked about regular water; however, ordering paid water didn’t feel appropriate in that atmosphere. Drinks also took too long to arrive. - Amenities weren’t replenished even though it was a multiple-night stay. Personally, I look forward to taking them home for use later; since I booked each night separately with its own rate per night, this felt disappointing. - While shuttle service is appreciated, arriving just five minutes before airport baggage drop-off deadlines felt stressful—more buffer time would be reassuring. Overall: There were many positive aspects; however high expectations made certain disappointments stand out more prominently than they might otherwise have been!

It was a stay filled with endless moments of awe.

We received numerous emails before our stay with detailed suggestions, which were incredibly helpful for us as first-time visitors to Yakushima. From reserving the Jomon Sugi tour, arranging the hotel's rental car service, to booking a spa appointment, everything was greatly appreciated. The book lounge offering different drinks depending on the time of day, shuttle service by butlers in carts, and returning from dinner to find our room prepared for nighttime—all these thoughtful touches left us deeply impressed. The open-air bath with a reclining feature that everyone praises was perfect for relaxing after a tiring hike. During our 3-night stay, we had all our meals at Ayana. As rumored, Ayana's menu was visually stunning and absolutely delicious. Even the freshly baked bread provided when we couldn't have breakfast at the hotel was unforgettable. On the night before checkout, we were informed about potential flight cancellations due to bad weather and were promptly assisted in reserving an early morning high-speed ferry. Thanks to this timely advice and arrangement, we managed to return home as scheduled without any issues. This experience has become one of the most memorable stays of our lives. Thank you so much!

    The hospitality is excellent.

I stayed for three nights during the summer vacation. The view of the blue ocean from the entrance pool was stunning and instantly uplifting! The lounge, though compact, offered a variety of drinks and reasonably priced, stylish souvenirs that were fun to browse. The Room had a spacious villa-style design reminiscent of Bali. Unfortunately, as I chose a room two grades below Ocean View due to availability, it didn’t offer much of a view despite the price. However, I loved the large bath with silky smooth water that was big enough for soaking comfortably! On the second day, I enjoyed trekking; on the third day, I spent time at the pool and had lunch by its side (the seafood bowl was incredibly delicious). It was such an enjoyable experience overall. The meals were exceptional—Ayana’s prefix-style Italian cuisine suited us as we don’t eat large portions; their paella and dessert buffet were outstanding! We also dined at Okas for two consecutive days because their dishes were fantastic. The adorable handmade service plates prepared by staff added charm to our dining experience—it was delightful! Above all else, what left a lasting impression on me was the hospitality of your staff. When we asked for photos to be taken, they kindly took multiple shots from different angles without hesitation. On departure day when there was uncertainty about our flight schedule due to weather conditions or delays—they proactively reserved ferry tickets as an alternative without us even asking—a testament to their thoughtful care and attention! While many Hotels excel in facilities alone—this Hotel stands out with its impeccable service quality too; it’s rare indeed—and I hope it remains this way forever. I can’t wait to stay here again!!
