    Wonderful

    I enjoyed my stay so much in summer that I came back again. I suddenly started feeling unwell and couldn’t eat even half of the meal I had been looking forward to, but the restaurant staff kindly checked on me and served rice porridge and other warm dishes. It made me want to return again. Unfortunately, the cold weather made the Room feel chilly for me while I wasn’t feeling well, but perhaps because the Onsen is good for digestion, I felt better by the next day. Thank you very much.

    I was very satisfied!

    This Ryokan is exciting from the moment you arrive. I got off the local bus and entered through the Sekizenkan Main Building. It can be a little confusing once you arrive at Sekizenkan, but staff quickly help you with a smile. I was given a photo guide, walked through the historic buildings to Kashotei, and checked in. It may be a bit hard to find your way on your first visit, but that was part of the fun. The open-air bath in the Room is also free-flowing Onsen water and can be used 24 hours a day. There are multiple towels provided, and if you need more they bring them right away. There are two large public baths, and neither provides towels, so you need to bring them from your Room. The Kashotei public bath has small lockers where you can store valuables. The Sekizenkan public bath has no separation between the changing area and the bathing area. Also, there is only one washing station, so if it’s crowded you may have to wait a bit. This time I stayed on a weekday and was told it was fully booked, but the public baths were quiet and felt like having them to myself. For meals, they ask in advance what time you would like both dinner and breakfast. Because of that, the restaurant never felt crowded and I could eat in a relaxed atmosphere. That said, the portions were very generous (laugh). After breakfast I didn’t feel like eating lunch. All staff members were friendly and welcoming with great smiles. The only small thing I noticed was that my toothbrush was placed in the basket for going to the public bath; since I used the open-air bath in my Room on arrival day, I didn’t realize it at first. They also offer an in-house tour (not every day), which I recommend—during it they share stories about the history of the property as well as its connection to *Spirited Away*. I also appreciated being able to use both the lounge and the large public baths even after checkout. Since there weren’t many shops in town, it was nice to stop by for a break while exploring.

    That’s unfortunate.

    I visited this Ryokan I’d wanted to go to for a long time, but it was simply disappointing. The welcome was pleasant, and the lobby and common areas were clean. However, the guest Room we were shown had a torn sliding door at the entrance, and the toilet door wouldn’t close properly. The tatami also creaked with every step, as if there were a soundproofing cushion underneath. I tried to reset my expectations and went to the large public bath, but since it’s shared with day-use guests and guests from the main building, the amenities were no more than what you’d find at a typical public Onsen facility. There was no cleansing oil (there was an all-in-one face wash), and after bathing there was only an all-in-one product. At minimum, I would have expected small thoughtful amenity bottles in the Room for guests staying in higher-grade accommodations such as Kashotei. In addition, about half of the shower booths had very low water pressure, and guests who were already there were telling others, “This one works.” Dinner was served in a private dining room, and the food was creative and delicious. For drinks, we were told we could order via QR code or ask the staff. But when I tried to order while they were serving dishes, I was firmly told, “Use the QR code.” It felt like a family restaurant. If it’s QR-code only, please say so from the start. At night there was a pot placed on the table with the tea (oolong tea) set; I assumed it was hot water, but it turned out to be drinking water for nighttime. I only realized in the morning when I moved it and heard ice inside. In other Ryokan there are usually cups placed alongside it so it’s clear. There was also no bedside lamp for use at night. Overall, nothing felt worth the price until we left. I understand prices are rising due to inflation, but paying close to 40,000 yen per person for this is hard to accept. Places I’ve paid similar rates for through IKYU have been excellent, which made this even more disappointing. I visited during a period that wasn’t even Japan’s peak season and expected more at this price point; afterward I felt like I’d unknowingly paid an inbound Lunar New Year rate—otherwise it just doesn’t make sense (laugh). Lastly, all of the staff members were kind and pleasant. That made it even more unfortunate—everyone seemed to be doing their best. It’s also disappointing that even with a Reservation through IKYU you can end up feeling this way. Still, in an odd way, this trip reminded me how much effort and quality other Ryokan and Hotels have provided over the years.

    Satisfied

    We were satisfied with everything—the Room, the meals, and the staff’s service. The meals in particular were a delight; the tableware suited our taste, and we enjoyed the food even more because of it. We would love to visit again in a different season. The guided tour of the property was also enjoyable and helped us better understand Sekizenkan’s history and its connection to Director Miyazaki and anime scenes.

    A Historic Bath

    This was my first stay here. The historic, Important Cultural Property bath and buildings felt like stepping back in time—an experience you can’t find anywhere else. The Room in Kashotei was very spacious and relaxing. The open-air Onsen with free-flowing natural spring water was especially wonderful; once in the bath, you can take in the full sense of space of the Room along with views of the pine forest and surrounding mountains at the same time. Enjoying Sekizenkan’s original beer made it a truly luxurious moment. One small note: the steps between the Japanese-style room and Western-style room are easy to see in the morning, but after evening they are dark-colored and hard to notice, making it easy to misstep—so I thought a footlight would be helpful. The quality of Shima Onsen is truly excellent, and next time I’d like to stay at the mountain lodge as well.

    Perfect for a relaxing and leisurely stay.

    The Onsen town of Shima Onsen is honestly small, with not much to do for entertainment. Accommodation includes a mountain lodge, spacious rooms, and a cozy kotatsu! It was perfect for enjoying the Onsen, eating delicious meals, and spending time doing absolutely nothing. The Onsen water is soft and very pleasant. However, there are limited washing areas, so you might need to be a bit cautious when moving around the Onsen area. Inside the accommodation involves some walking with stairs and connecting elevators. There are no convenience stores nearby, so if you're using public transportation, it might be good to bring some snacks along. Still, the staff at the accommodation were incredibly welcoming, allowing us to enjoy a truly relaxing and peaceful stay.

    A fantastic and trad...

    A fantastic and traditional building. The view, room, and facility at Katsurashotei were excellent, but accessing the main building was inconvenient due to stairs and elevator transfers. A direct elevator to each floor would be helpful. For those with weak legs, it should be fine as long as you don't aim to visit all the baths in the facility. It was disappointing that the three baths, including the open-air bath and those in the main building, were lukewarm. Although it might be a difficult request, having a shuttle service to Nakanojo Station (even for a fee) would make me want to visit again.

    It was a satisfying trip.

    The property consists of three buildings, and while moving between them requires transferring elevators, the buildings themselves are rich in history and charm. The thoughtfully designed corridors made the movement enjoyable. The meals were exceptionally delicious, with both quality and quantity being highly satisfying. There are three large public baths and a free family bath available; however, towels are only provided as one set in your Room, and no towels are available at the public baths. Additionally, there is no towel warmer in the Room, so it was slightly disappointing to have to reuse cold towels after drying off multiple times.

    The staff were kind ...

    The staff were kind and considerate, making it an enjoyable time. The meals were truly delicious with just the right portions, and the quality and temperature of the Onsen were perfect. However, the lock on the Room's toilet was old and difficult to use, so I hope it can be improved.

    Shima Onsen: Returning After 30 Years

    I decided to stay at this accommodation because I love staying in historical buildings. The mountain lodge had a calming Japanese-style room with the scent of incense. It happened to be the day of a history tour, and despite being a weekday, more people participated than I expected. During the Edo period, it was a hot spring healing spot, and the buildings constructed over its long history were fascinating to learn about. Coincidentally, there was a local festival that day, and they performed Yagibushi dance in front of the accommodation, making it an even more memorable experience. Every dish served was exquisitely tasteful and beautifully presented—I wished I could have stayed for about a week at this wonderful accommodation.

    I first visited during my student days, and recently, I have stayed a few times with my wife. This time, I came with friends. Thank you for allowing us to enjoy a relaxing time after driving around the area. My friends were also very satisfied.

    The bath and meals were satisfying.

    I stayed at the accommodation, which is connected to the main building and Kashotei. Meals were served at Kashotei, and I enjoyed various baths including Genroku no Yu, Mori no Yu, and a private family bath. Genroku no Yu was smaller than expected but had a retro atmosphere. Since I visited early in the morning and had it all to myself, it was very comfortable. Mori no Yu was also excellent. The meals were delicious with generous portions, leaving me very satisfied. When following the car navigation system to the parking lot, I encountered a very narrow road where passing oncoming cars was challenging. The ambiance of the building was lovely, and I’m glad I chose this accommodation for my stay.

    On your special day

    This was our first time using this accommodation. We stayed for one night as a couple and received the best "hospitality." The atmosphere of the accommodation and the staff's "hospitality" were the best we've experienced in 50 years of life. As expected, warm dishes were served warm, and cold dishes were served cold. We couldn't stop saying how "delicious" everything was as a couple. This time, we stayed at Kashotei, but next time we would like to stay at the mountain lodge or main building with Showa-era charm. *I didn't know this was the model accommodation for my favorite Studio Ghibli movie, "Spirited Away," when I made the reservation. When I found out it was, I watched the movie before staying here.*

    It was a wonderful accommodation.

    It was a wonderful accommodation with a sense of history. Honestly, I didn't have high expectations for the meals (since it's a mountain accommodation), but despite being in a landlocked prefecture, the sashimi was delicious, and all the meat dishes were excellent. The additional menu items and drinks were surprisingly reasonably priced for an accommodation. Having access to the lounge was also a delightful point. The hot spring water was, of course, exceptional. There’s nothing to complain about here. I’ll visit again soon!

    Highly Satisfied

    Stayed in a corner room of the mountain lodge. The greenery visible through the full glass windows was soothing, and the room's design exuded a timeless elegance. The semi-open-air hot spring bath with natural flowing water in the room was so relaxing that I used it multiple times. Meals were prepared with fresh, body-friendly ingredients, offering a variety of flavors to enjoy. Breakfast was also excellent, though for an elderly couple like us, the portions were slightly too large—but everything was so delicious that we ended up finishing it all. It was an absolutely satisfying accommodation experience. Thank you very much! When booking online, I thought I had selected a twin room, but upon arrival, it turned out to be a double room. Perhaps I made an error during the reservation process?

    Enjoyed the blend of old and new.

    I stayed at Kaisoutei, which was undergoing renovation to install open-air baths in the guest rooms. The Room was clean and had a relaxing atmosphere. Visiting the mountain villa and main building felt like stepping back in time. As a Ryokan that inspired Studio Ghibli works, the ambiance was exceptional. The meals were carefully prepared and thoroughly enjoyable. The staff's hospitality was pleasant, making for a refreshing stay.

    A traditional Japanese-style Room with charm.

    The corner room with a view through the glass window and the traditional Japanese-style room was truly wonderful. Unlike many ryokans that have been overly modernized through renovations, this place had a very calming atmosphere. Meals were served in the restaurant, with generous portions and beautifully presented dishes, each featuring different flavorful broths. Although we couldn't book a Multiple Night Stay this time, we hope to stay for multiple nights next time.

    I was able to show my gratitude to my mother.

    We stayed for one night and two days. It was a trip with my elderly mother, my daughter, and me. The view from the Room was wonderful, and it was very comfortable. We joined a historical tour and enjoyed the charm of the Sekizenkan building. The hospitality and service were excellent, and the meals were very delicious. Thank you very much!

    First Visit to Shima Onsen

    The room was exceptionally clean, which was a delightful surprise. I would love to stay here again, specifically in this room. The meals were delicious, and despite being in a landlocked prefecture, the seafood was fresh and tasted like it came from a seaside town. Unfortunately, there are very few tourist spots nearby, but just relaxing at the accommodation itself is worthwhile. I would like to return. I hope for more comprehensive amenities in the future.

    It was a memorable trip.

    In early August, we stayed at Kashotei Matsukaze 7 as a couple. The spacious and clean room, along with the private Onsen bath, was very comfortable and allowed us to relax fully. Both dinner and breakfast featured beautifully crafted kaiseki dishes that impressed us greatly in terms of taste and presentation. The portions were just right for our age group, and the meals reflected thoughtful attention to detail. While this is just a personal opinion, I would like to mention the following points: - The grilled ayu fish was fragrant and delicious; however, it would have been even better if served warm. - The squid ink rice served at the end had a striking visual impact but might be an acquired taste for some. Perhaps because of the elaborate kaiseki courses leading up to it, finishing with plain white rice might resonate more deeply with Japanese guests—it feels like an authentic conclusion to a meal. On our drive toward Sekizenkan Inn, we passed through Gunma's beautiful rural landscapes filled with lush green rice fields that enhanced our sense of travel nostalgia. Seeing such scenery made me think that ending the meal with "premium Gunma-grown white rice" could leave an even stronger impression as part of your hospitality. We enjoyed exploring each unique building—Honkan (Main Building), Sanso (Mountain Villa), and Kashotei—and experiencing their distinct Onsens while fully immersing ourselves in Shima Onsen's charm. Although there are few sightseeing activities in this area, Sekizenkan itself felt like an attraction; we particularly enjoyed participating in its fascinating "History Tour." Next time, we hope to stay at Sanso for another memorable experience. Lastly, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for the warm smiles and attentive service from all staff members. Thanks to you all, this trip became truly unforgettable! Thank you very much!

    The best Onsen!

    We visited for my sister's birthday celebration, as per her wish to travel to Kusatsu! After experiencing the acidic waters of Kusatsu, we enjoyed the smooth and mild Shima Onsen—absolutely amazing! When we got lost on our way to the Onsen town, a quick call brought immediate assistance, and someone kindly guided us. The warm hospitality from everyone truly touched us. While the main building was charming, Kasho-tei impressed us with its new and clean rooms and baths. The delicious cuisine, along with its beautiful presentation and tableware, also delighted my sister. It turned out to be a wonderful celebratory trip. Next time, I hope to visit with my husband!

    Gourmet Delights and Onsen Bliss

    We enjoyed delicious Japanese cuisine at the restaurant and revitalized ourselves with the wonderful hot springs like "Genroku no Yu." The semi-open-air bath in the Room was spacious and very comfortable. Even though it was just a one-night stay, we felt completely refreshed both physically and mentally. The service from the staff during meals and other employees' hospitality were excellent.

    Impressive amount of hot spring water!

    A famous accommodation known for its connection to "Spirited Away." The interior exudes a sense of history, which was wonderful. The room was part of a historic mountain villa. It was clean, conveniently located near the lounge and private baths, and very comfortable. The private bath in the room was exceptional—I used it repeatedly. From the open-air bath in the room, you could often hear others expressing their delight with "Ahhh~" sounds. There are plenty of baths available, including large public baths and private ones. The amount of hot spring water is incredible—probably the best I've experienced so far. It felt amazing! Truly outstanding. I heard that the large public bath on the first floor is also available for day-use visitors. As for meals, they were quite unique with many creative dishes. Some ingredients had strong flavors that might not suit everyone’s taste; I found them delicious, but my companion had a few items they didn’t enjoy as much. This aspect might be subjective when evaluating. Overall, it was an excellent accommodation. I’d love to visit again if given another opportunity!

    A favorite Room of parents in their 80s

    Stayed with elderly parents who require some assistance with mobility. We absolutely loved the view of the magnificent red pine branches from the open-air bath in this concept room. The room amenities, including plenty of towels, yukata, and samue, as well as ample towel racks, were also a favorite point for us. The lighting throughout the facility and rooms is calm but may be difficult to see for elderly guests with poor eyesight. Especially in the rooms, brighter adjustable lighting would make it more comfortable; hence we deducted a star. However, overall we were very satisfied. From the moment we arrived at this accommodation, every staff member's kind hospitality and the refreshing atmosphere of Kashotei during this lush green season were exceptional. Having stayed at another accommodation before coming here this time made us appreciate Kashotei even more. This is truly a special place we'd love to visit again. Thank you very much!

    This was my first vi...

    This was my first visit. I stayed in the special mountain lodge. First, upon entering the Room, I was impressed by its retro yet clean atmosphere, interior design, and lighting. The private indoor hot spring with free-flowing natural water had a perfect temperature and was very enjoyable. The meals, Room, and bath were all excellent. The staff who assisted us provided wonderful service as well. I will definitely return again! Thank you very much!
