    As expected of the h...

    As expected of the historic Sekizenkan. The main building is truly impressive. The history tour was also very interesting. It’s irresistible for fans of Spirited Away. Getting from Kashotei to the Genroku Bath requires changing elevators and is a bit inconvenient, but it’s a charming, atmospheric bath. The staff, including young international team members, were all polite and professional. One thing I noticed is that the samue loungewear runs a bit small, so I personally would be happy if larger sizes were available. If I have the chance to visit Shima Onsen again, this is an Accommodation I would definitely like to stay at again.

    Our family stayed for one night. Both the Room and the in-room bath were wonderful, and we were truly impressed by how delicious the in-Room dinner was. The staff member who brought our meal was from overseas, but their explanations and manners were very polite, and we had a very pleasant dining experience. Breakfast also offered a wide variety of dishes and was very tasty, but when it was served, we only received a brief “please enjoy,” with no explanation of the menu. We ended up eating while wondering what each item was. Even a simple description would have been fine—we would like to know at least the ingredients, where they are from, and how they are seasoned—so it would be helpful to have at least a written menu. That was the only disappointing point.

    For Shima Onsen, stay here.

    It was the best trip. This was a wonderful Ryokan in every respect—Japan’s oldest bath, the cuisine, the service, and the Onsen. I stayed at Kashotei with in-room dining, and every dish of the carefully prepared kaiseki meal was outstanding. The staff were perfect—always smiling and considerate—and the tour was also educational, helping me learn about the hot-spring cure area and the history of the Accommodation. After enjoying the open-air bath, family bath, and Japan’s oldest bath, my skin and hair felt silky smooth. The lounge is great too. Please do visit.

    Staying for the first time in five years

    Last time I visited was in August 2021. This time, I stayed again for the first time in five years. My Room this time was in the mountain lodge, “Ukon no 5.” It’s a compact 6-tatami-mat Room, but it does have a private bath. In that 6-mat room… there was an exhaust fan on the ceiling. Dust was caked onto the slatted vent cover. It was disappointing right after arrival. I don’t like to talk about money, but I’ll say it anyway: this is a Room costing over 50,000 yen per person. I can’t understand the mindset of leaving something so obviously noticeable in such a dirty state. The person who showed us around the Accommodation and our Room… their manners and language were far too unpolished. “Unpolished” might be tolerable, but… I think more thorough training is needed. At least tell guests where the amenities are. There’s a bath right in front of the private-use room, and then there’s another one just around the corner—right? Is it assumed we should know without being told… That private bath also had an overflowing trash bin as early as 3:00 p.m., right after check-in. About the meals… with rising ingredient costs, fuel costs, and everything else, I’m sure prices have gone up. But both the Accommodation Fee and especially the food felt so different from what I remember from last time that it was almost sad. The elegance of the hassun platter, how the sashimi was presented, what was inside the soup—looking back at my photos from last time makes it obvious. Most striking was how this time’s meat dish was served: eaten taco-style with a “skin” baked using some kind of flour and tapioca flour? I understand they must have struggled to come up with something under constraints. But it felt so outlandish that I couldn’t even tell what exactly we were being served. Is this “wonderful creativity,” or “trying too hard to be quirky”? My impression is that between the male server’s smooth, upbeat talk and some unusually rugged yet elaborate tableware, any decline in ingredients or cooking quality is effectively glossed over. As for service… how dishes were placed on the table and overall movements felt a bit rough. Mr. Y◯… when he turns around, his long tied-back hair swings dramatically. Last time (August 2021), at Genroku-no-Yu (bath), part of the women’s bath area was closed due to construction. Since only one side remained open (the men’s side), it rotated by gender depending on time slots—so that part left me unsatisfied then. This time there was no stress at all; I could fully enjoy Genroku-no-Yu, which was good. Additional note: The cosmetic amenities come as single-use pouches, but only two uses’ worth are provided for one night. Even if you don’t mind using something different from your usual products and wouldn’t normally bring your own, you may run short—so bringing your own is recommended.

    It was absolutely terrible.

    I came with very high expectations, but the meals were extremely disappointing. First, when I entered the Room, there was a lot of hair on the floor and tatami. Are you actually cleaning? As for the meals, they were served in-room, but the time between courses was too long and the food was cold. This is just my personal impression, but I did not find it tasty. I didn’t even feel full. There was no explanation about drinks at all—very disappointing. In particular, eel was on the menu and I was really looking forward to it, but the flesh was tough—was it from China? It wasn’t fluffy at all; it was hard and cold… It also had a strange smell. It was terrible. Breakfast also wasn’t very good (again, just my personal opinion), and I asked for dessert but it didn’t arrive even after more than 15 minutes. I pressed the call bell and someone came, but what was that about?… It felt like they forgot… Dinner yesterday was already unacceptable, and then breakfast too… On departure day, a foreign staff member spoke to me and helped with my luggage since I had a lot, which I truly appreciated. However, there were several Japanese staff members as well who simply looked away… There were some good points, but because the bad points stood out so much, I honestly never want to go again. I would never recommend it to friends or acquaintances either. It may be considered one of the more upscale places in Shima Onsen and may be popular, but this feels like an excuse often seen at large “high-end” Accommodation—being short-staffed. From a guest’s perspective, staffing shortages are irrelevant; if you don’t have enough staff, you should reduce the number of guests accordingly.

    We’ll visit again.

    Everyone who has stayed here probably feels the same, but we were satisfied with everything. My husband and I have been saying, “We want to come back.” In particular, we enjoyed a relaxing time in the lodge lounge “Izutsu” (if you stay at the lodge and Kashotei, enter using the PIN code provided). After returning home, we’re even considering whether we can recreate the same atmosphere in our living room (laughs). Next time, we’d like to stay for two nights or more.

    I’ve found another favorite accommodation.

    All the staff were pleasant and welcoming, which made us feel well cared for. The bath towels were so large and thick that they were a bit difficult to handle.

    A Soothing Accommodation

    I stayed one night at Kashotei and had a truly soothing, relaxing time. The cuisine was outstanding—rooted in Japanese food yet incorporating French elements, it was creative and impressed me with unexpected ingredient combinations. As someone who loves tableware, I also found it delightful. The staff were wonderful and treated my elderly parents with warm hospitality. This is an Accommodation I sincerely want to visit again.

    Highly satisfied

    I stayed at Kashotei no Mori on the solo Plan. I arrived earlier than the check-in time, but it was fine. I was seated in the lobby and served castella cake and tea, received a courteous explanation, and even the walk to my Room with guidance was a pleasant experience. Above all, the meals were unbelievably delicious—better than anywhere I’ve stayed before—and since I was traveling alone, being able to dine in a private room was a major plus. The Room also had an open-air bath, a large bed, and a big TV, which alone made me very satisfied. As for small details: there wasn’t a full-length mirror in the Room. Also, although I was staying alone as a woman, there was a single-use men’s facial lotion provided—was that by mistake? There was face wash but no makeup remover. That said, it should be fine if you bring your own. In any case, I was extremely satisfied with the food and would definitely like to visit again.

    The Onsen Accommodation You’ve Been Wanting to Visit

    The illuminated red bridge and the main building, full of Taisho-era charm, make a beautiful picture. Across the way, Kasotei—entered from the opposite side further in—features a stylish modern design. We stayed in a Room called Mori on the top floor. We were satisfied with both the Room’s design and the open-air bath, but there was an unusual and very loud noise coming from around the ceiling. We wondered if this was something guests complain about every time, but when we told a Japanese staff member in the morning, they seemed surprised as if it was their first time hearing about it. Without this issue, we would have been very satisfied. It’s disappointing.

    Highly recommended.

    I had stayed here once before, and I made a Reservation as a gift for my elderly parents so they could experience how wonderful Sekizenkan is. Just as I had hoped, my parents were deeply impressed by everything—the in-house tour, the private indoor bath with free-flowing natural hot spring water, and both breakfast and dinner. Although it was supposed to be a dining-hall meal Reservation, it seems they kindly arranged a private room as well, which made them very happy. I’m truly grateful. My father usually eats small portions, but he apparently finished everything and said it was all delicious. I also accompanied them up to check-in as an escort, and I felt sorry that you even provided me with the welcome service. The castella cake was very tasty. Even now, long after the trip, they still talk about how good the meals were, how it was their first time experiencing such a luxurious private indoor bath, and how they want to come again. Shima Onsen itself is not a flashy tourist destination. Sekizenkan in particular has no large tour groups—just Japanese guests quietly relaxing—so I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to enjoy an Onsen in peace. With fewer than 30 rooms, maintaining and repairing such excellent Facilities must be incredibly challenging, but I will continue to support you. I will definitely visit again.

    It was fun.

    A charming, atmospheric building. The corridors are so intricate you might get lost. The birthday option was also very touching. However, as an older guest, I would prefer to enjoy higher-quality dishes rather than a large quantity. It might be nice to have a course like that as well.

    - First, the parking attendant listened to my concerns and responded flexibly, which made check-in very pleasant. - The guided in-house history tour was fascinating and very informative. - As expected of Shima Onsen, the silky-smooth hot spring baths with abundant free-flowing water were wonderful—especially the Genroku Bath, where I could simply soak and relax while reflecting on those who came before us. - The meals were meticulously prepared, and I was fully satisfied with both the quality and quantity. Truly professional craftsmanship—everything was delicious. - I was also comforted by Ms. S’s warm smile and dedicated service. Ms. S, please take care of yourself and keep up the great work—I’m cheering for you! - Just one point: a boiler/air-conditioning or other mechanical noise continued throughout the night. Since it is a historic building, I understand it may be unavoidable; however, if Facility improvements are made in the future, it would be an Accommodation I would definitely love to visit again. - In any case, I feel truly refreshed and grateful to have made such wonderful memories!

    I could really feel the weight of history.

    I made a Reservation after seeing a photo of the Genroku-style bath featured in a magazine. Just touring the historic building and baths was enjoyable enough, (a calligraphy piece by former Prime Minister Nakasone was discreetly displayed), and I also thoroughly enjoyed the kaiseki cuisine and the open-air bath. Above all, it felt wonderful that every staff member greeted me warmly whenever we met.

    Company retreat

    We were able to take an unexpected holiday, so we went on an Onsen trip for the first time in a while. A room with a private open-air bath was available, so we made a Reservation—and we were extremely satisfied. The view from the open-air bath and the quality of the water were both excellent. We also enjoyed dinner in a private dining room, where we could relax and savor the delicious cuisine at our leisure. The illuminated main building at night was also stunning. A few years ago, we stayed in a mountain villa room with a private open-air bath and were very satisfied, but this time Kasotei exceeded our expectations even more. We would love to visit again.

    With its retro atmos...

    With its retro atmosphere, Onsen, cuisine, and attentive service, I was able to relax fully. The Room was also comfortable. The history tour was great. The eel rice bowl at the end of the meal was delicious. The massage chair wasn’t very comfortable, perhaps because it didn’t fit my body size.

    An extraordinary Onsen Ryokan experience begins at the red bridge.

    We stayed here as a couple. We had long wanted to stay at this Ryokan, often said to have inspired *Spirited Away*, and our wish finally came true. The bus arrived near the main building, and the red bridge in front of the Ryokan was unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, we felt a special atmosphere. Said to be Japan’s oldest hot-spring Accommodation architecture, the interior is retro and full of character—it truly feels like stepping back in time. This time we stayed in a premium Japanese-modern Room with an open-air bath in Kashotei. It was fascinating how the 분위 changed each time we moved between the main building, Sanso, and Kashotei. In particular, the contrast between the tunnel on the way from the main building to Sanso and the modern elevator beyond it left a strong impression. The seasonal kaiseki dinner was delicious, and the portion size was just right. The open-air bath in our Room was at a comfortable temperature, and we were able to relax while enjoying the view. We also used both shared baths—“Genroku-no-Yu” and “Mori-no-Yu.” With so many different tubs, it felt like enjoying a hot-spring tour. Because it is a historic building complex, there is quite a bit of walking between areas, and moving around with luggage can be somewhat challenging. Guests with mobility concerns may want to keep this in mind. Even so, it was an unforgettable stay where we could fully appreciate its history and charm.

    Since it’s not a price range we can afford to visit many times a year.

    I stayed at Kashotei. I thoroughly enjoyed the Onsen at Mori-no-Yu—the water quality and abundance were excellent, and the atmosphere was wonderful. It was a weekday stay, but at check-in it felt like there were slightly too few staff; I suppose it can’t be helped. It would be nice if women’s yukata came in more color and pattern options. The meals offered a reasonable number of dishes, but each portion felt small for me. I also noticed a few items that made me wonder about the serving temperature, so it seems there may be room to refine the menu. The tableware was gorgeous and fun. As for the Room amenities, I’d appreciate things like a smartphone speaker, a coffee maker, and some simple drinks. That might also make the often-crowded mountain lodge lounge feel more relaxed and comfortable. Next time, I’d like to join the history tour. Thank you for your warm hospitality. (Male in his 60s)

    The bed duvet is unu...

    The bed duvet is unusually short and excessively wide, as if the bed was made incorrectly. It seems to be fixed in place and cannot be adjusted, so it only covers up to my stomach and I cannot sleep properly.

    The in-room bath was excellent.

    I was torn between Sanso and Kashotei, and since I wanted private dining, I chose the Five-Star Concept Room. The private dining room was more than spacious enough for two, and we could relax. The food was tasty, but it felt a bit simple and somewhat lacking. The explanations of each dish were also minimal, which felt like a missed opportunity—for example, “This is a smoothie” with no mention of the ingredients. Personally, I was also disappointed that dinner ended with ochazuke; since it’s a Ryokan, I would have preferred rice and miso soup. Also unavoidable but inconvenient: the restroom near the restaurant was under construction. The Room was excellent. In particular, the in-room bath exceeded expectations in size, temperature, setting, and water quality. It was so comfortable that we ended up not using the large public bath at all. Getting from Kashotei to Sanso to the main building requires connecting corridors and multiple elevators—fun like an adventure the first time, but a bit of a hassle—so we only went to the lounge once. There weren’t many drinks or snacks; it felt like a minimal rest area. I might have been happier if there were more tea options or something like a coffee machine in the Room. Overall I’m satisfied because my main goal was to take nice photos of the bath and the beautiful main building. However, there are other Accommodations at this price point with much stronger service, so I hope things can be improved a bit more.

    Mountain Lodge “Ruri no Ichi”

    This time we stayed in the Room “Ruri no Ichi” in the mountain lodge. As the building is a nationally registered Tangible Cultural Property, it had a wonderfully atmospheric charm. We found ourselves admiring the exquisite kumiko shoji screens in the Room for quite some time. The private lounge was also a calm, relaxing space where we nearly lost track of time. Needless to say, we fully enjoyed Shima Onsen’s waters in Genroku-no-Yu, the open-air bath, and the in-room bath. The meals were very delicious; if we had to mention one thing, with a bit more attentiveness it would have been a perfect 5 out of 5. On the drive home, we were already discussing which Room in the mountain lodge to choose next—our family will be choosing Sekizenkan for quite a while.

    Yukata (Japanese summer kimono)

    It was very comfortable. For my next stay, if possible, I would like two yukata or a set of pajamas. I love baths and usually take three each time, but with only one yukata it becomes damp and I can’t use it for sleeping.

    Historic Building

    I saw this wonderful historic building on TV and decided to stay here. I arrived at Shima Onsen around noon, did some sightseeing on foot, used the lounge before check-in, and visited the café after check-out. It was a short trip using public transportation, but I felt I was able to enjoy it efficiently. The building was lovely, and the baths were great. We were also told at the beginning that it’s best to rinse off in the Kashotei bath. In terms of atmosphere, there were many international staff and guests, but it felt calm. Several international guests even greeted me with “Good morning” when we passed each other in the morning. All of the meals were delicious, including some dishes I had never tried before. The alcohol prices were very reasonable. Overall, I had a pleasant stay, but personally it didn’t quite have that strong pull that makes me think “I absolutely want to stay again!”

    Stay at Kashotei

    Some guests may find the nationally registered cultural property villa charming, but if you are paying over 100,000 yen, Kashotei may be the more reasonable choice overall. Just moving from Kashotei to the villa leaves a worse impression. The corridors also seem to need renovation. Using the same elevator as guests is not an issue in itself, but staff service varies... (I cannot describe this frankly because it would fall under content that should not be posted according to IKYU.com Review guidelines.) When I asked about changing Rooms, I was told that once you enter a Room (even if you do not touch anything and stay only briefly), it is considered “used,” and that changing Rooms would require paying 50% of the charge for the “used” Room. Hmm... I feel like the meals were good.

    The Room in this atmospheric Ryokan is equipped with the minimum essential Hotel facilities, which we believe international guests will appreciate. Izutsu on the third floor is a relaxing café lounge with tasteful furnishings.

    I’m satisfied.

    My long-held wish came true, and I stayed at Sekizenkan. I also joined the history tour. The Hotel staff’s explanations were easy to understand, and it was a very informative time learning about its history. Both dinner and breakfast were beautifully presented, with lovely tableware. Everything tasted great and I was very satisfied. The baths and steam bath felt wonderful, especially combined with the quality of the Shima Onsen water. However, a few stink bugs appeared in the Room, which caused quite a commotion in my family. I understand it can’t be helped in a traditional Japanese building surrounded by magnificent trees. Other than that, it was an excellent Accommodation. I would love to visit again.

    Wonderful

    I enjoyed my stay so much in summer that I came back again. I suddenly started feeling unwell and couldn’t eat even half of the meal I had been looking forward to, but the restaurant staff kindly checked on me and served rice porridge and other warm dishes. It made me want to return again. Unfortunately, the cold weather made the Room feel chilly for me while I wasn’t feeling well, but perhaps because the Onsen is good for digestion, I felt better by the next day. Thank you very much.

    I was very satisfied!

    This Ryokan is exciting from the moment you arrive. I got off the local bus and entered through the Sekizenkan Main Building. It can be a little confusing once you arrive at Sekizenkan, but staff quickly help you with a smile. I was given a photo guide, walked through the historic buildings to Kashotei, and checked in. It may be a bit hard to find your way on your first visit, but that was part of the fun. The open-air bath in the Room is also free-flowing Onsen water and can be used 24 hours a day. There are multiple towels provided, and if you need more they bring them right away. There are two large public baths, and neither provides towels, so you need to bring them from your Room. The Kashotei public bath has small lockers where you can store valuables. The Sekizenkan public bath has no separation between the changing area and the bathing area. Also, there is only one washing station, so if it’s crowded you may have to wait a bit. This time I stayed on a weekday and was told it was fully booked, but the public baths were quiet and felt like having them to myself. For meals, they ask in advance what time you would like both dinner and breakfast. Because of that, the restaurant never felt crowded and I could eat in a relaxed atmosphere. That said, the portions were very generous (laugh). After breakfast I didn’t feel like eating lunch. All staff members were friendly and welcoming with great smiles. The only small thing I noticed was that my toothbrush was placed in the basket for going to the public bath; since I used the open-air bath in my Room on arrival day, I didn’t realize it at first. They also offer an in-house tour (not every day), which I recommend—during it they share stories about the history of the property as well as its connection to *Spirited Away*. I also appreciated being able to use both the lounge and the large public baths even after checkout. Since there weren’t many shops in town, it was nice to stop by for a break while exploring.
