[Room] At our child’s request, we made a Reservation for Shuhotei so that four generations of our family could stay together in the same Room. It was a special suite with the charm and character you’d expect from a long-established Ryokan, and we were able to relax completely. The attached garden was spacious, and opening the windows felt wonderfully refreshing. There was also a tea room, which was quiet and very comfortable. [Dinner] Everything was delicious, and there were many dishes—sashimi, meat, fish, and more—so we were very satisfied. The sashimi selection included sea urchin, squid, sea bream, and tuna, and each dish had generous portions as well; even the thick-cut beef tenderloin on the teppan grill was substantial. We left feeling completely full. The tableware was beautiful pottery throughout, making dinner enjoyable both visually and in taste. [Breakfast] Breakfast featured local specialties such as Ureshino tea rice porridge (chagayu), Onsen yudofu (hot-spring tofu), and Onsen eggs—everything was excellent. The silky Onsen yudofu was especially delicious; I even asked for seconds. [Onsen] We enjoyed two types of Onsen at the property as well as three more at their affiliated Shiibayama Sanso. The Waterfall Bath at night was particularly lovely—the koi seen through the window added a wonderful sense of atmosphere. [Service] Every staff member we met—at the front desk, parking area, dining venue, and elsewhere—was kind and made us feel truly welcome. We were traveling with a small child as well, but they were very kid-friendly: attentive meal service for children, small toys as gifts, and help keeping our child entertained when taking photos.

Shocking Room! Different from the photos on IKYU!
After staying at Unzen’s Toen and then the Nagasaki Marriott, we stayed here in a standard Japanese-style Room. The front desk felt dingy; honestly, even a modern Business Hotel feels cleaner. The route from the lobby to the Room involved many stairs, and the building felt clearly aged. Upon entering the Room, there was nothing I could honestly say was “good.” There were sunken areas like a recessed kotatsu at all four corners toward the back of the Room. The toilet, sink, and bath were combined in one unit, and if you left slippers by the entrance, the door wouldn’t close. Most shocking was how old the towels were—so worn that it was impossible to tell how many years they’d been used. They didn’t feel clean enough to use on my face. The view from the window was also completely different from the photos shown online and was disappointing. Because of the sunken sections, there wasn’t enough flat space to lay out bedding properly; as a result, part of the duvet cover remained folded over in the middle like a kotatsu blanket (about one quarter). If you move around in your sleep, you’ll fall into it. In the large public bath area, there was hair left all over both the changing room and washing area, giving an impression that cleaning wasn’t thorough. It may partly be due to other guests’ manners, but even taking that into account, it raised doubts about cleaning frequency—to the point that after washing my hair I didn’t feel like drying it. At dinner, each dish arrived covered with something like paper (perhaps to keep off dust or insects), which did not convey any sense of handmade hospitality. What surprised me most was sashimi: it was served with this paper cover still on. When I asked, “There’s paper on it—am I supposed to remove it myself?” I was told yes: “It had been chilled in a refrigerator until just now; please remove it yourself.” Regarding the lid for teppan-yaki on a ceramic plate as well: “Please remove it using your hand towel,” meaning we were expected to handle it ourselves. The only items I found tasty were squid shiokara (salted squid), zucchini, and tofu at breakfast. The futon had an unpleasant odor and wasn’t comfortable enough to rest; I woke up repeatedly during night because of smell and couldn’t sleep. There seem to be more photogenic Room types such as those in another wing or detached buildings; however, judging from what we saw—the service level at reception and among serving staff as well as condition of front desk/lobby/interior—I don’t feel those concerns would disappear even if choosing something other than main building. If this is truly marketed as an “established Ryokan,” then beyond preserving tradition they need essential updates in cleanliness standards and quality of hospitality.

Service by staff wearing masks makes it feel like hospital food.
Although the service was good, being served dinner and breakfast by nearly ten staff members all wearing masks felt like a hospital meal, and I wish they hadn’t done that. This is an Onsen Ryokan, not a hospital or a nursing care Facility.

We were extremely satisfied!
We stayed as a family. We were very satisfied with the Accommodation, the Onsen, and the meals. The building had a charming atmosphere (the stairs were a bit challenging), and we enjoyed a clean Onsen of excellent quality and delicious, high-quality cuisine. We were especially surprised by how good the meat, tofu, and rice were. Above all, we truly appreciated the heartfelt hospitality from all the staff. We were happy to receive so much helpful advice about getting around inside the property. We are also very grateful for your thoughtful consideration in providing an irregular Shuttle Service to the station. Although it is far away, this is a wonderful Accommodation we would love to visit again. Thank you for such a lovely time!

Fully satisfied in both mind and body. I’d love to stay again.
I stayed here with my parents in their 80s, as they wanted to experience a traditional Ryokan. Every staff member we met offered warm, kind hospitality, and both the Room and the entire building were spotless and well maintained. The Saga cuisine was served in just the right portions, and the flowers arranged throughout the building were truly soothing. In addition to the on-site baths, there is also a Shuttle Service to Shiiba Sanso, a sister Ryokan nestled in a gorge. Next time, I would love to stay there as well. Thank you very much.

The finest hot springs, cuisine, and hospitality
We stayed here to celebrate our anniversary. We were able to relax at our leisure in a spacious Room. The Onsen in the Room was also very pleasant, and it seemed that cleaning was thorough throughout the Room and the hallways. The staff in charge of reception, guidance, and dining all appeared to treat guests with care and kindness. Both dinner and breakfast offered a good variety of dishes, and everything was very delicious. It was a little disappointing that the simmered dish at breakfast had cooled down, but that may have been unavoidable when serving many guests. We also received a heartfelt message for our anniversary trip, which made it a truly memorable stay. We would like to visit again when we have the opportunity.

Compared to a few years ago
The food was significantly better than it was three years ago. The Room, large public bath, and staff attitude had also improved. I was impressed to see things moving in such a positive direction.

I was very satisfied.
We stayed with my sister’s family as two families. When we arrived, there were many guests attending a daytime banquet around the lobby, creating a lively and energetic atmosphere. The Facility was well maintained throughout and very clean. The Onsen provided towels, so it was convenient to bathe without bringing anything. Both dinner and breakfast offered a wide variety of dishes, all delicious, and we were very satisfied. At breakfast, we could get refills of the yudofu and enjoyed it with soup. I chose the tea rice porridge, which had a gentle flavor and a pleasantly firm texture. The Room toilet had a nice touch with the scented sachet on display, which added to the ambiance. Everything exceeded our expectations, and choosing this place was absolutely the right decision. We would love to stay again if we have the chance.

The fresh greenery was beautiful, and the Hotel was very comfortable.
We stayed here for a mother-and-daughter trip. The building is old, but it is well maintained and felt very clean. Flowers were arranged here and there, pottery was displayed, and the soothing aroma of green tea filled the air... The two large public baths each had their own character and were wonderful. The open-air bath at the affiliated Hotel, Shiibayama-so, was also amazing! The meals were carefully prepared with gentle seasoning, and I could really feel how good they were for the body. We also enjoyed the Saga beef and Onsen yudofu we had been looking forward to. I would have loved a little more meat (haha). The tea porridge I tried for the first time at breakfast was outstanding! Both the baths and the food were very satisfying, but above all, what stayed with me most was how genuinely pleasant everyone’s service was—always with a smile. It was truly a wonderful Hotel.

Highly satisfied!
It was a truly wonderful Accommodation! Every meal was delicious, and the staff’s service was warm and pleasant—we would love to visit again. The kaiseki dinner was beautifully presented, from the dishes to the tableware, and everything tasted excellent. The grilled round eggplant with chicken miso and the corn dumpling were new to us, but they were absolutely delicious. We also loved the seasonal flowers displayed throughout the building. The bath was spacious and very relaxing, and it was great to be able to enjoy a hot-spring tour at Shiiba-no-Yu as well. We would definitely like to come again.

Delicious cuisine paired with Arita ware and a free-flowing Onsen
We were able to enjoy the Onsen in a calm atmosphere. The food was also delicious.

Exceptional hospitality.
We stayed here on a fun trip with three close friends in Ureshino, Saga! The Onsen and the food were both wonderful—an Accommodation we were truly satisfied with! They even took photos for us at the farewell, and best of all, the owner saw us off until our car had completely left the Accommodation—so kind! The only small issue was that the Room entrance was a bit narrow, which made it a little hard for one of our slightly plus-size friends to get through, but everything else was perfect. We’d love to come again!

Thank you for your thoughtful care.
I stayed at this Accommodation on an unexpectedly hot day for May. I was traveling from Nagasaki, and with limited public transportation options, I arrived well before check-in time. When I told the front desk staff that I would like to rest in the lobby, they informed me that my Room had already been cleaned and kindly escorted me to it. I truly appreciate this thoughtful consideration. The meal, beautifully served on elegant pottery, was also delicious. Above all, what impressed me most was the high level of professionalism among the staff; they treated guests naturally and kindly, which deeply moved me. I would love to visit again if I have the opportunity.

A wonderful, reasonably priced accommodation
As you would expect from a Ryokan with a long history, all the staff were very polite and pleasant. Perhaps due to repeated extensions over the years, there were many stairs, which was a bit difficult for my mother who has trouble walking. We were very satisfied with the in-room bath: it was free-flowing hot spring water from the source and far better in quality than the large public bath. My parents also seemed satisfied with the meals. We were shown to our Room, but we would have appreciated a service where an attendant prepares tea for us.

It’s a great Ryokan.
The staff were well trained and provided pleasant, courteous service. The food was also very delicious. I was satisfied with the bath as well. I also received a thank-you letter—this is a Ryokan that makes me want to visit again.

Exceptional Hospitality That Exceeds Expectations
I stayed in Ureshino Onsen with my elderly mother. The Onsen felt wonderfully open and spacious, and we were able to relax at ease. The water quality was excellent—truly what you’d expect from Ureshino Onsen. Right after soaking, my skin felt silky smooth, and my mother was delighted as well. Every meal had a gentle flavor, and you could tell each dish was carefully prepared. We were very satisfied. Above all, we were deeply moved by the warm hospitality of everyone at the Ryokan. While the Facility does show its age, the thoughtful attention and kind words made us feel genuine human warmth again. With services becoming more automated through the internet and AI—convenient but sometimes impersonal—it meant a lot to experience Japan’s heartfelt hospitality. It became a wonderful memory for our special trip together. We would love to return again.

The Onsen is amazing!
The hot spring water felt silky-smooth on my skin, and I never got tired of soaking no matter how many times I went in! The meal featured Saga beef; even three slices were just enough because it was very rich and fatty. Overall, everything was well put together.

We can’t wait to visit again! It was a wonderful Ryokan.
This was one of the best Ryokan I’ve ever stayed at. I felt more comfortable here than at Accommodations that cost more than twice as much. It was my first time visiting Ureshino Onsen, and the silky, slightly thick water felt wonderful. There were two large public baths—one for overnight guests only and one for day-use visitors only—and I especially liked the latter because it was so spacious. There are too many great points to list, but this is definitely one Accommodation I want to visit again. I want to praise it endlessly, but I also want to keep it a secret—if it gets too popular and I can’t make a Reservation, that would be a problem…

The Facility is old, but the hospitality was welcoming.
I stayed during Golden Week. I chose a Room with access to the garden. Unfortunately it rained, but the rainy garden was still lovely. The lighting was just right, and I kept the blinds open. The meals were fairly traditional, but nicely presented and delicious. The portions may be large for women or elderly guests. The staff maintained a comfortable sense of distance, noticed many small details, and I truly appreciated it. They made suggestions at exactly the moments when I was thinking of asking, which was excellent. Requests from here: Since there is no open-air bath, you need to go to an affiliated Hotel, which is a bit inconvenient. Also, the bath is only available until midnight, so it feels a little rushed. Improvement request: The toilet in the Room does not flush well. It does flush, but the water flow is weak so you end up flushing multiple times. Overall, it undeniably feels old-fashioned, but it was clean. The staff did not feel overly manual-driven; rather, they handled things with genuine personal care, which made my stay comfortable. Ureshino itself feels old in general, so perhaps that can’t be helped. Kyushu has many Onsen options, so I don’t think I’ll be returning anytime soon. However, my wife absolutely loved the Room with garden access, so our impressions may differ next time.

The Tranquility of a Long-Established Ryokan
I felt truly relaxed thanks to the calm, attentive hospitality you would expect from a long-established Ryokan. I also enjoyed the Onsen, including Shiiba-no-Yu. Dinner was delicious, but there was so much that I couldn’t finish it. It was disappointing that the beef tenderloin was changed to loin.

The view from the Room is disappointing.
I chose this Accommodation because I liked the Room and the view shown in the photos on this site, but when I opened the window and looked outside, all I could see was a flat roof of another building. I was expecting a lovely Japanese-style view, so that was disappointing. Everyone at the Accommodation—the front desk staff, dining staff, the person cleaning the changing area at the bath, and the shop staff—worked sincerely, and I was able to spend my time comfortably. The free drinks in the lobby (coffee, soft drinks, etc.) were also convenient. Shiiba-no-Yu was very nice as well. So it pains me to say this, but I’m giving 3 stars...

We’re sorry to hear you were disappointed.
Given the fairly high accommodation rate, I traveled from Osaka with high expectations, but unfortunately it wasn’t quite what I had imagined. The building and Facility felt old; the Room was spacious, but there were many steps and level changes, which was a bit confusing. The large public bath was somewhat small, and the in-room bath also felt small. The food was good, but the large banquet hall had many big families and was quite lively, so it didn’t feel like a calm dining experience. I should have researched more carefully before deciding. Sorry to say this, but it was disappointing.

The garden view and dinner were delicious. The bath was also comfortable.
I stay 2–3 times a year. As for the meals, dinner was delicious, including the sashimi, meat dishes, and hassun. What is disappointing is that while the tofu at breakfast is tasty, the other items don’t feel warm or freshly prepared. In particular, the cold grilled red fish spoils the overall impression, and I feel this every time. This time our table was also near the serving area—almost like being next to a corridor. The staff are busy from start to finish; they do try hard with service, but I hope you will reconsider seating in this area. The baths have become even better since the renovation. The staff also seem younger; in particular, the Korean female staff member who assisted us after arrival worked very hard, and her sincerity came through naturally—I had a very good impression of her. On the other hand, after checkout a young male staff member in the parking lot did not react at all even when it started raining—he simply saw us off without any consideration. Senior staff should provide proper guidance; otherwise I worry that it will undermine what makes this long-established Ryokan special. I have loved this Ryokan since the days when the Okami was still here, so I am sharing these comments candidly.

We stayed here to celebrate a 70th birthday.
Every year, we visit various Onsen Ryokan, and Taishoya truly felt like the quintessential Onsen Ryokan. It was a traditional Ryokan in the best possible way, and we could really feel the hospitality. At a time when eco-friendly and minimalist Accommodation are becoming the norm, we were able to enjoy an exceptional trip. Even though we only mentioned that we were staying to celebrate a 70th birthday, they prepared several surprises for us, which made us genuinely happy. It’s an Accommodation our family agreed we’d love to return to for our next celebration!!

This long-life celebration is also available here.
The lounge was so beautiful it felt like being in a grove deep in the forest, and everything—from the art displays, the pottery shop, and ikebana arrangements to the bath where you can meet a koi’s gaze, the calming Room, and delicious Ureshino tea with sweets served in lovely teaware—made our celebration even more special. We were also deeply impressed by your heartfelt service. Even though you were fully booked, it was quiet and relaxing—surely thanks to your wonderful hospitality. The meals were delicious as well, and we would love to visit again. We would also like to stay at Shokintei next time. Everyone, young and old alike, was completely satisfied. Thank you very much.

Five stars or more
This was a three-generation trip to celebrate longevity. I was excited to stay in a property designed by Junzo Yoshimura. In the lounge on the afternoon of our arrival, sunlight filtered through the trees, making it feel as if we were in a forest (the garden can’t be that large—perhaps this is part of the brilliance of the design). The ikebana arrangements, hanging scrolls, and seasonal Hina doll display were beautifully presented, and the garden view was wonderful, adding to the celebratory mood. My only concern was that it was fully booked for the weekend, but it never felt noisy at all, and the impeccably clean baths were almost always private. During our meal in a private dining room, we received truly heartfelt hospitality, making this a trip to remember. Thank you very much. Everything deserves more than five stars. We would love to return.

This is my second time, but that’s fine.
These days, it’s rare to find an Accommodation that gets all the small, comforting details right, but this one truly does. You are properly welcomed. There are warm smiles. Lovely flowers are thoughtfully arranged every morning. The lightly seasoned dishes and the dashi suit my taste perfectly. The choice of tableware is excellent as well. And needless to say, the bath is wonderful for a long, relaxing soak. You can head out feeling refreshed, grateful to see a staff member carefully wiping down the windshield early in the morning. Highly recommended Accommodation.

Everything was excellent.
This was our third stay, and as always, the service exceeded our expectations. We always look forward to the meals, and we are impressed every time by both the food and the beautiful tableware. At dinner, two staff members were attentive, cheerful, and kind, which made it a truly wonderful evening. My companion was also delighted. In our Room with an open-air bath, we were able to enjoy the Onsen until late at night. We will definitely return again. Thank you very much.
