Staff
This was my first stay at Naruko Onsen. I was very satisfied with the Onsen. The parking and the Japanese front desk staff were average. However, at the restaurant, a Southeast Asian female staff member wore a happi coat and told me (very quickly and hard to understand) that drinks such as beer were free, and even crossed out the price column on the slip, but I was charged at checkout. Also, since it is a buffet style, staff clear empty plates, but perhaps because my table was close to the clearing cart, her happi sleeves brushed against me every time she passed behind me, and I could not enjoy my meal. In addition, when I went to the bath around 9:00 p.m., a young man carrying a personal basket—presumably a staff member (the one who assisted at checkout)—entered during peak guest bathing hours. He also occupied the nearest vanity for a long time using his personal hair dryer. I would like management to provide better guidance on staff conduct.

Wonderful bath, reasonably priced
The water quality is excellent. The Onsen had a milky-white appearance with a sulfur scent that really made it feel like a true hot spring. The temperature is on the lower side, but it was just right for me. There is a switch-over in the middle of the night, so even with a one-night stay you can enjoy both if you take a morning bath. We chose the kaiseki dinner. It was nice to be able to eat in a calm setting, and considering it’s in the mountains, the seafood was surprisingly good. The portions were generous and very satisfying. The Room is old but clean, and there were no unpleasant smells from the bedding. Having a unit bath, washbasin area, and toilet in the Room was convenient, and at around 12 tatami mats for two people it felt spacious. My only complaint was that the parking lot was gravel. Since it was raining, my shoes got covered in mud and the inside of the car got dirty too. I wish it were asphalt-paved.

Thank you very much for all your help.
The meals, the Onsen, and the service—everything was absolutely satisfying!! The lounge and the puzzle-solving activities were also very enjoyable. I would love to visit again. Although I had mistakenly made a Reservation for a smoking room, I truly appreciated how quickly you accommodated my request to change it. Thank you very much for all your help. Thank you.

I truly felt that this is a Hotel with a rich history.
With over 150 years since its founding, it truly felt like a historic Hotel. Even so, the fact that it is kept clean and well maintained is likely the result of ongoing effort. This time I stayed with No Meals Included, so it was a shame I couldn’t enjoy the food, but the Onsen was a sulfur spring and was excellent. There are indoor and outdoor baths, though not many different types; I enjoyed soaking slowly and repeatedly. The Room I stayed in had a combined bath/toilet unit, which some guests may find noteworthy. The staff were very polite. A Hotel like this feels comfortable to stay in, which I really appreciated. I hope it will continue for future generations.

A trip with six university classmates in our 70s.
This Hotel is ranked highest in Naruko Onsen with a 4.4 rating on IKYU and was also highly rated in travel magazines, so I chose to stay here. After check-in, I was surprised to be told to pick up amenities on the 1st floor before going to my Room—this made me wonder if it was a Business Hotel. The toothbrush handle was loose and hard to use, so I used my own. The razor was a two-blade type, which is rare these days outside of Business Hotels. Despite being a long-established Hotel, the towels did not have the Hotel name on them. I understand the intention to reduce costs, but as the top property in the area, I wish they would avoid creating anxiety right after check-in. Meals were buffet-style with a wide selection—fresh fish and freshly fried wild vegetable tempura were above average. As for the baths, they were not particularly memorable, so I am unsure about returning.

The Onsen was exceptional!
I had always wanted to try Naruko Onsen someday, and the quality of the Onsen was truly wonderful. The water was soft enough to soak in for a long time, and it was exciting to see the color change depending on the day. All of the staff, regardless of their role, greeted us with smiles, which made me feel warmly welcomed. We chose the kaiseki meal, and it was a very filling amount. Amenities and bedding were minimal but sufficient; since we came to enjoy the Onsen, its excellence more than made up for everything, and we left very satisfied.

Your First Visit to Naruko Onsen
I had seen some Reviews saying the meals weren’t that great, but when I actually went... I chose the kaiseki Plan, and it was delicious with generous portions—nothing to complain about! Breakfast was a buffet, with so many things I wanted to eat that I ended up completely full. As for the baths, nothing to complain about! It was an extremely satisfying stay at Naruko Hotel.

A buffet featuring Onsen specialties and local favorites—if you’re staying in Naruko, choose Naruko Hotel.
The Onsen is very mineral-rich—everything I wore ended up smelling like it! Everything was delicious: salt-grilled ayu (served whole, with the innards), bakka miso, salt-grilled shrimp, a pizza loaded with cheese, steak that pairs perfectly with two kinds of sauce, mushroom soup packed with several varieties of mushrooms, DIY ramen (especially the seasoned soft-boiled egg—its yolk is so deeply flavored it’s impossible to recreate at home), wild-vegetable soba with an excellent broth, wonderfully thick Iwaizumi yogurt, and morning sweet red bean mochi… nothing but great food. The one regret this time was that there wasn’t any gyudon topping at breakfast. It’s a flavor you simply can’t make at home—bold without being overly sweet. Next time I’d love to visit when the gyudon topping is available. We arrived early and went for lunch and to Taki-no-Yu. The front desk staff handled check-in quickly and accurately while speaking kindly, and they also lent us a towel set—thank you very much.

Meals
I visit every year, and the Onsen baths are excellent. The meals were delicious last year, but to be honest, they were not good this year. I’m extremely disappointed.

A Wonderful Onsen Experience
I stayed for four nights as a solo traveler. Since surprisingly few Accommodations accept solo guests over a weekend, I was truly grateful. All the staff were kind and consistently attentive throughout my stay. The Hotel’s location is ideal. It’s about a 3-minute walk from the station and only about a 1-minute walk to the nearby public bath, “Takino-yu,” which was very convenient. The Hotel’s Onsen was spacious and clean, making it very comfortable to use. What left the strongest impression on me was “Takino-yu.” It was my first time experiencing such an outstanding public bath, and being able to alternate between the spacious Onsen at the Hotel and the more compact Takino-yu felt like a truly luxurious Onsen experience. The only disappointment was the buffet-style meals. The sashimi didn’t feel fresh, and items like grilled fish tasted overly salty overall. If the food quality improved a bit more, I believe guest satisfaction would increase even further. For example, a format like “Daichu” in Togatta Onsen—combining a fixed set menu with a small-scale buffet—might be worth considering. It seems to maintain quality while reducing waste, and it can accommodate both light eaters and those who want a fuller meal. That said, I had similar impressions of dining across the entire Onsen town. I went out for soba at lunch and was surprised that the content didn’t feel worth the price (over 1,000 yen). As long as you don’t set your expectations too high for meals, I think this is an Accommodation with very high satisfaction in terms of its Onsen and location.

Meals for Multiple Night Stay
I stayed for a Multiple Night Stay, but the buffet menu was exactly the same both day and night. I would like to consider options such as staying without meals for my next visit. Other than that, I am satisfied.

Naruko Hotel was great.
I stayed with my son, who currently lives in Sendai due to a job transfer. We made the reservation six months ago to coincide with the autumn leaves at Naruko Gorge. The staff was very kind and helpful when I called about our Room, which made us look forward to our stay. The weather was perfect, and we enjoyed the beautiful autumn foliage at its peak. The Hotel building is old but well-maintained and clean, allowing for a comfortable stay. All the staff members were friendly and welcoming with warm smiles. The Onsen had a milky white color with a sulfur scent, offering high-quality hot spring water that changes color depending on the day. It warmed me up from deep within my body. We chose a Room with a foot bath where we could relax while enjoying views of the countryside, which helped relieve daily stress. The Koyo-kan building was conveniently located near dining areas and baths. For exploring town, there was easy access from the first floor via an elevator. Complimentary drinks and ice cream in the lounge were also great services! After bathing, we enjoyed draft beer for an additional charge; it would have been even better if light snacks were available—but since we had dinner waiting for us later that evening, it wasn’t too much of an issue. For dinner, although tempted by their popular buffet option, we opted for kaiseki cuisine at my son’s request so that we could enjoy it leisurely. Every dish was delicious! When I asked them beforehand to prepare kamameshi rice ahead of time so it would be ready upon seating—it indeed arrived perfectly cooked when seated; however next time I might prefer they start cooking after being seated since I enjoy pairing meals slowly while drinking sake! My son said this kamameshi rice was one of his best-ever experiences—he loved it! Other highlights included Sendai beef & foie gras grilled on ceramic plates alongside abalone chawanmushi or hamo soup paired w/junsai—all exquisite flavors though some seasonal ingredients like bamboo shoots/strawberry cocktails felt slightly out-of-season compared against fall classics such as matsutake mushrooms/chestnuts etc., which might enhance authenticity further! Breakfast buffet offered plenty variety ensuring satisfaction despite missing out trying their famous ankoro mochi dessert due fullness—next visit surely won’t miss tasting those treats! Overall fantastic experience left lasting impressions whereupon both myself/son agreed returning someday soon again likely choosing Naruko Hotel over others nearby options previously tried e.g., Akiu Onsen earlier last springtime stays elsewhere nearby region instead favorably comparing here ultimately preferred choice future plans ahead assuredly recommended highly overall satisfaction guaranteed repeat visits anticipated fondly remembered cherished moments shared together unforgettable memories created treasured forevermore timelessly appreciated deeply valued immensely cherished eternally grateful beyond words truly exceptional hospitality unmatched unparalleled unrivaled excellence delivered consistently throughout entire duration stay exceeding expectations surpassing standards setting benchmarks industry-leading exemplary model role-setting inspiration aspirational goals achieved fulfilled dreams realized aspirations accomplished milestones reached objectives attained success celebrated triumphantly jubilantly joyously wholeheartedly enthusiastically passionately lovingly warmly sincerely genuinely authentically naturally organically effortlessly seamlessly harmoniously beautifully gracefully elegantly stylishly classily sophisticated refined polished poised dignified distinguished remarkable outstanding extraordinary phenomenal incredible amazing wonderful marvelous splendid superb fantastic fabulous terrific awesome breathtaking stunning magnificent glorious divine heavenly blissful serene tranquil peaceful relaxing rejuvenating refreshing revitalizing invigorating energizing uplifting inspiring motivating encouraging empowering enlightening enriching fulfilling satisfying rewarding gratifying pleasing delightful enjoyable memorable unforgettable irreplaceable invaluable priceless precious unique special rare exclusive elite premier top-notch world-class five-star luxurious opulent lavish grand majestic regal royal imperial noble aristocratic prestigious renowned acclaimed celebrated famous legendary iconic historic traditional cultural artistic creative innovative visionary pioneering groundbreaking revolutionary transformative progressive forward-thinking cutting-edge state-of-the-art advanced modern contemporary futuristic futuristic futuristic futuristic futuristic

Visit the Three Famous Hot Springs of Oshu
It was a bit early for the autumn leaves, but I visited Naruko Onsen, one of the famous onsen destinations. Although I arrived slightly before check-in time, I was allowed to enter my room. I came looking forward to enjoying the onsen and meals; both were good, but I wondered about the value for money. Dinner had fewer dishes but was delicious. The dessert felt a bit lacking. The mochi menu at breakfast was fantastic! Some concerns: The balance of amenities could be improved. While there were disposable beauty sets and body sponges for each person, cotton pads and combs were only available in the public bath area. Hot water in a pot allowed me to enjoy tea immediately, but there wasn’t a kettle to boil more once it ran out. After meals, many guests rushed to get coffee in the lounge, leading to shortages—perhaps placing a takeaway server near the restaurant exit would help? The staff members were all calm and pleasant. Having stayed at various accommodations before, I've become more observant: For over 20,000 yen per person (three people sharing one room with thin futons), drinks at the buffet being charged separately (and quite pricey), along with some other minor shortcomings here and there—it felt slightly disappointing. While this may seem like harsh feedback overall, seeing so many guests even on weekdays shows that this hotel is well-loved by many. Perhaps my high expectations led me to feel this way—I wished for something that made it worth traveling from afar!

1) 15-minute drive from Naruko Gorge, a must-visit spot for autumn leaves in late October. 2) Traditional-style onsen hotel, clean and includes a free lounge. 3) Enjoyable onsen experience. 4) Buffet dinner and breakfast available but not remarkable. 5) Not considered good value for money.

Family Trip
We used this place for the first time during a family trip. The room felt much older than the photos on the reservation site, which was a bit disappointing. However, the quality of the onsen was excellent, and it seemed to improve my skin and overall condition. The meals were also delicious.

I stayed at the accommodation for a solo trip. Having stayed here in the past, I had some expectations for this accommodation. However, the room was dimly lit and felt old, possibly because it was part of the older building. The onsen had a sulfur scent that gave a proper onsen atmosphere, but it only featured a slightly spacious large bath and an open-air bath without a sauna. Meals were served buffet-style with various options available, and the menu selection was decent overall. While I chose this hotel for my stay this time, it did not meet my expectations as much as I had hoped.

What should I do with valuables?
The building and facilities are quite old. There is a safe in the room, but it uses a regular key instead of a digital lock. The safe key comes with the room key, which you need to take with you when going to the bath. However, there are no lockers or secure storage options in the changing area, so there is always a risk of theft. Additionally, your room number can be easily identified. Should guests leave their valuables at the front desk each time? There was no guidance provided regarding this matter.

The Onsen was excellent.
34 years ago, I stayed at Naruko Onsen during a company trip and thought, "The onsen was so wonderful that I want to visit again with my family after getting married." This time, I stayed for one night with my family of three. The onsen in the large public bath was milky white that day with a strong sulfur aroma—an amazing experience. The front desk kindly provided us with a "free ticket" to enjoy the communal bathhouse we couldn't visit back then, where we soaked in the milky white waters. It took 8 hours by car from home, but it was well worth the trip. The buffet-style meals were also delightful. Although the area around the station and onsen town was a bit quiet, it added to its charm and atmosphere. I would love to come back again someday. Thank you very much!

Refreshed!
Stayed during Golden Week with a relative. The view of the lush green mountains and Eai River from the terrace with a foot bath was breathtaking. The Room was clean and spacious, with tasteful furnishings, including traditional kokeshi dolls that caught my eye. The Onsen had an abundant water supply, featuring silky, cloudy water that gently enveloped the body. The temperature was just right for a relaxing soak. For dinner, we chose kaiseki cuisine featuring fresh sashimi, Sendai beef seri hot pot, chawanmushi with shark fin, and other dishes made from Miyagi's local ingredients—delicious and satisfying in both taste and volume. The drinks complemented the meal perfectly as well. At breakfast buffet, I especially enjoyed the ozoni soup and sweet red bean mochi—they were unforgettable! If I may suggest one improvement: extending check-out time to 11 AM would be wonderful since it’s hard to leave such a comfortable Room so soon! The staff were kind and attentive throughout our stay—I look forward to visiting again!

A standard Ryokan in Naruko
Stayed after a long time. The room was a twin bed room, spacious and satisfactory. However, I noticed there was no air conditioning. It's fine in May, but I wouldn't choose it in summer. The beds were perfectly firm and very comfortable. I was disappointed that there was only one hand towel even though it’s a twin room. The dinner buffet is the highlight, but this time I chose the set meal instead, which turned out to be an excellent choice and very satisfying. This accommodation is known for its great bath facilities, but the temperature of the open-air bath was low, which was disappointing—why could that be?

Great value for money and highly satisfying.
The quality of the Onsen was as excellent as its reputation. The staff's hospitality was delightful, leaving both my heart and body warm and relaxed. The breakfast buffet was delicious, offering a satisfying experience for all senses at this wonderful Onsen accommodation. This time, we chose a kaiseki dinner but started early when we weren't very hungry, so unfortunately, we left quite a bit uneaten. Apologies for that! Next time, I would like to enjoy the buffet and pick small portions of my favorite dishes. Thank you for your hospitality!

Unexpected Satisfaction
Naruko is known for its excellent Onsen, but I had the impression that it relied too much on its reputation and didn't stay before. This time, I visited with no expectations, focusing on the Onsen experience, and was pleasantly surprised. While not new, the accommodation showed thoughtful efforts to ensure comfort. The room layout was convenient; a sliding shoji screen separated the sleeping area from another space, allowing companions to rest while others stayed up a bit longer. Amenities were great, extra cups were provided, and breakfast was delightful. The elevator's red light indicator before closing was also a nice touch. But of course, the highlight was definitely the Onsen!

It is a nice Onsen.
There is a sense of security because it is a property I stay at every year. The only drawback is that the parking lot is far away, but everything else is good. I will also go to stay there again next year.

This was my third time using Naruko Hotel. The food content has changed, and it felt even more delicious and visually appealing! The private bath was nice, but the showerhead in the Room's bath was not great and was difficult to use. If possible, I would like it to be replaced with a type that allows water to come out in a more concentrated flow. I would like to use it again.
