    An Exceptionally Satisfying Stay

    Obuse, the town of Hokusai and chestnuts, is known for its beautiful streetscape that feels almost like a theme park. We arrived a little early by car, so we visited Gansho-in Temple and Jokoji Temple before heading to Masuichi Kyakuden. The ceiling painting at Gansho-in—Katsushika Hokusai’s “Phoenix Glancing in All Directions”—was truly breathtaking. As soon as we pulled up in front of Masuichi Kyakuden, a staff member came right out and efficiently carried our luggage inside. The highly sought-after “Chestnut Dessert Suzaku,” which is notoriously difficult to secure, will be offered from 9/10 this year. Because guests staying at Masuichi Kyakuden receive priority guaranteed access, it becomes even harder to make an Accommodation Reservation for stays from 9/10 onward. Since our stay was before then, making a Reservation was easy. Stepping inside Masuichi Kyakuden, you’re immediately enveloped by the stately atmosphere of the kura storehouse building. Our Room was on the second floor; we chose the Relax Twin style. Despite being in a kura-style structure, it also has a terrace, with plenty of natural light and an open feel. There are also more traditional, calmer kura-style Rooms available; however, we were told they are designed with high ceilings to avoid any sense of confinement. Designed by architect John Morford, the Room is fully Western-style with extensive use of stainless steel—its glass-and-stainless bath is well worth seeing. Amenities are L’Occitane; the refrigerator includes complimentary drinks; plus coffee and tea—everything you’d expect from a high-end Ryokan-style stay is provided, making the Room very comfortable. For dinner, we walked about three minutes to Obusedo Honten (part of the same Masuichi group). Every dish showcased the head chef’s experience and refined sensibility. The soup course, simmered dishes, and grilled items had a Kyoto kaiseki influence—above all else, the dashi was exceptional. The sashimi was fresh and perfectly seasoned as well. Local ingredients were used throughout for very high satisfaction overall. One note: the first items served—lightly dressed Kurakake beans and Matsumae-zuke—are not part of the course menu itself (just so you know). They’re clearly intended as snacks with alcohol—especially sake brewed by Masuichi Ichimura Sake Brewery within the same group—and both paired beautifully with their sake: firm Kurakake beans soaked in elegant dashi alongside Matsumae-zuke packed with rich seafood umami made each sip even better than before. In autumn Obuse becomes all about chestnuts; while we couldn’t try “Chestnut Dessert Suzaku,” we did get to enjoy “Mont Blanc Suzaku,” a Western-inspired take on Suzaku. It’s available at their affiliated shop “Entotsu.” We nearly gave up due to long lines but learned that overnight guests can make Reservations—so we were able to enjoy it without waiting. If you stay at Masuichi Kyakuden, be sure to indulge in one of their “Suzaku”-style chestnut sweets if you can. Overall it was an outstanding stay—we thoroughly enjoyed Obuse from start to finish.

    The hospitality was warm and attentive without being intrusive, making our stay very comfortable.

    The staff and restaurant team welcomed us with smiles, and their warm hospitality made our stay very comfortable. Since the property is a renovated storehouse, we didn’t notice any surrounding noise at all—it was very quiet. The food at the restaurant was also excellent. It would have been perfect if there had been an Onsen! Just two points: (1) The hair dryer’s airflow was weak, which was disappointing. (2) At breakfast, I chose coffee from the drink options, but it was served before the meal. Afterward, I was asked if I would like anything else after the meal, so I would have appreciated being asked when I wanted the coffee brought out. If coffee could be served later, I would have preferred apple juice first.

    Midsummer in Obuse

    The Facility was spacious and comfortable. All the staff were efficient and left a great impression. It was also nice to have Japanese food for dinner and Western food for breakfast. The fried chestnut tempura was delicious!

    It had a calm atmosphere.

    Although it is not an Onsen, we were able to relax and rest in a calm atmosphere. The breakfast was also delicious, and we were very satisfied. Chilled drinks in the refrigerator are also free of charge.

    A thoughtfully curated Accommodation

    Attention to detail was evident everywhere. It may not be to everyone’s taste, but it suited us as a couple in our 50s. My wife was particularly struck by the fact that all the staff who assisted us—including at the restaurant where dinner was served—were men (just by chance? or part of the concept?). We were able to relax very much during our stay. When we visit Obuse again, we would love to stay here again.

    Calm, comfortable ambiance

    The courteous staff provided careful explanations and guidance, and we were able to relax in a quiet Room with a large bed and plenty of space. My companion is elderly and was afraid of the stairs (due to weak legs). I think it would be easier to choose a Room if the information included which floor it is on and whether there is an elevator. The bathroom also had a step, so they were afraid to use it.

    A beautiful town, a wonderful Accommodation

    This was an Accommodation I’d wanted to stay at for a long time. The exterior has a stately, traditional Japanese feel, but once inside it was surprisingly stylish. The Room felt like a unique blend of Japanese and modern design, and with the high ceilings it was very relaxing. We had dinner at the restaurant. The flavors were generally light, but that allowed us to truly enjoy the ingredients—such as Spanish mackerel and sea bream—and everything was delicious. All of the staff were exceptionally courteous. Having both dinner and breakfast outside the Accommodation also felt refreshingly different. The Eggs Benedict at breakfast was excellent. Obuse was also a town I’d been wanting to visit. What impressed me most after arriving was that it’s a town where you can enjoy flowers, including open gardens. I also learned about local history, such as the connection between Gansho-in Temple and Takai Kozan with the Ichimura family. There are many wonderful shops for both Japanese and Western sweets, and it became a very happy memory. Thank you very much.

    A Fun Experience

    Meals are taken outside the Accommodation. The weather was nice, so that was a fun experience as well. The food was good and we enjoyed it. The bed is spacious and comfortable. The bath has a stylish design and became a memorable, unique experience. If you expect the plumbing to be a bit inconvenient from the start, you can still enjoy it.

    Charming Accommodation

    A hotel created by renovating a traditional storehouse. It has a charming atmosphere, and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. However, the bathroom has some issues: while the water pressure is strong and fills up quickly, adjusting the temperature can be challenging due to high water heat. The large and deep bathtub does not maintain a consistent temperature throughout, and its triangular shape makes it less user-friendly. The shower might feel lukewarm at its highest setting for some people. The meals are delicious. The entire area surrounding this accommodation has an amazing ambiance that alone brings happiness. Be sure to visit the Hokusai Museum located behind the accommodation! The staff were very pleasant, making for an enjoyable stay overall.

    Accommodation for a New Experience

    【Good Points】 ① The room is spacious and easy to use. ② Complimentary apple juice and coffee are delivered, except during the 19:00–7:00 time slot (charged at 550 yen). ③ Welcome service includes tea and chestnut sweets. ④ Free beer and water are provided in the refrigerator. (I accidentally left a bottle of Japanese tea I bought myself in the fridge!) ⑤ The bath has an interesting design, and it fills up quickly with hot water. ⑥ One complimentary drink at the bar—delicious! ⑦ Reservation for Suzaku Mont Blanc is available for 11:30 the next day. ⑧ The Eggs Benedict served at breakfast is delicious. 【Disappointing Points】 ① Since it’s a renovated warehouse, there’s hardly any natural light in the room—it can’t be helped. ② I was looking forward to visiting the library, but its book selection was unappealing—are they donated unwanted books? ③ Walking within the premises to reach dinner or the bar is extremely dark; adding some lights here and there would help as it's dangerous with uneven paths. ④ Dinner had good reviews, so I had high expectations; however, one dish included marinated beans that didn’t feel like proper cuisine to me—I want dishes that are unique or hard to make myself! While some other dishes were rare ingredients, their seasoning was disappointing overall; none left a lasting impression of "That was amazing!" Hoping for better next time. ⑤ Perhaps due to its design, bathwater cools down quickly—even when adding hot water on top, only the surface gets warm while below remains lukewarm despite stirring around; staying longer made me feel colder instead of warmer over time! ⑥ Although we were told shoes could be worn inside rooms freely—it felt uncomfortable thinking about luggage handling on floors walked over by outdoor shoes; switching into slippers near entrances might be more hygienic overall! Despite my comments above—the sense of community spirit revolving around this chestnut-themed town feels unique & enjoyable!

    Visited for the first time in 15 years.

    Visited after 15 years. Accommodations often show signs of aging over time unless they are historical buildings. I didn't expect this facility, which had a modern impression, to age gracefully. However, the exterior view, garden including pathways, and furnishings exuded a strong sense of Japanese beauty and were truly wonderful. The room was lovely as well; however, with only indirect lighting, it might be ideal for couples enjoying the ambiance but felt too dim for grandparents and grandchildren like us. The bathroom seemed modern and stylish when it was first built but now shows some signs of aging. The faucet was heavy and difficult to use; adjusting the temperature was confusing, leading my wife and grandchild to experience cold water during their bath. That said, the bathtub itself was comfortable—bathing with my grandchild brought us joy as we stayed in longer than usual feeling very happy. While there were minor concerns here and there, the staff's warm hospitality made our trip enjoyable. Thank you very much! We look forward to visiting again!

    Chestnut Delights

    This was my first visit to Obuse, and I think autumn is the best season to visit. Although walking to the dinner location on a dark road was a bit scary, the staff kindly guided me. Both the food and tableware were very satisfying. The chestnut-themed appetizers and chestnut rice left me feeling full. While it’s not an Onsen, the bath was spacious, and I appreciated that it wasn’t a unit bath. The breakfast bread and milk were also very delicious. I only stepped into the library briefly, but if I had more time, reading Hokusai's manga would have been enjoyable. This is an accommodation I can recommend!

    I initially imagined...

    I initially imagined a traditional accommodation from its name and exterior, but it was beautifully renovated with modern facilities while retaining the charm of the old storehouse. The high ceilings and the small garden with autumn leaves created a cozy atmosphere. Although there seemed to be other guests as indicated by footwear at neighboring or downstairs room entrances, it was completely quiet and relaxing. The dim indirect lighting was lovely, while the separate bright washroom with natural light was practical and well-designed. I especially liked the comfortable lounge chair and washroom stool. The bath had a large tub that filled quickly due to high water pressure, offering a special experience even without being an onsen. The meals exceeded expectations; dinner featured chestnut tempura and fresh chestnut rice that were so delicious they left me amazed—I had never tasted such wonderful chestnut dishes before. Breakfast included handmade items like apple juice and jam, all of which were incredibly flavorful, reflecting the richness of life in Obuse. Above all, I was deeply impressed by how kind and genuine the young staff members were—they went beyond standard service practices to assist us warmly. Despite it being slightly cold outside, they even guided us along our way—thank you very much for that. Overall, this is an exceptionally relaxing accommodation where I would love to stay again!

    This was my first time staying here. I was guided to a bright and well-cleaned room. The amenities and beverages provided made me feel the hospitality of the accommodation. One thing that bothered me was that when I greeted the staff with "Good morning," there was no response, nor did they say "Have a nice day" when I left. It was quite disappointing, and I wondered if proper training had been given since it wasn't the same staff member each time. Other than that, I would like to stay here again.

    A high-quality Hotel.

    I stayed at this hotel during my visit to Obuse. Although it is a small-scale hotel, the attentive service made my stay very comfortable. The room was spacious, the bed was large, and it was quiet enough for a restful sleep. For meals, I used the on-site restaurants; both the Japanese à la carte dinner and the Western-style breakfast set were delicious. The bathtub in the room had glass walls, but with gray tiled floors, it gave off a cold impression. The bathtub was large and deep, resembling those found in Onsen facilities rather than one for leisurely soaking. However, as the water pressure was strong, there were no issues using it. I would love to stay here again when I visit Obuse next time. The hotel staff were very professional and pleasant to interact with—thank you!

    I had been curious a...

    I had been curious about Masuichi Kyakuden for a while, but since it doesn't have an Onsen, I kept postponing my visit. The service had a perfect balance of attentiveness and distance, the room was calm and wonderful, and the stylish deep large bathtub gave me the feeling of enjoying the charm of an urban hotel within Nagano's beautiful environment. It has become one of my favorite accommodations. The drinks in the refrigerator are free, soft drinks via room service are complimentary at certain times, and showing your key gets you a free drink at Oni Bar. The nearby restaurant Kurabu served delicious dishes no matter what I ordered. Everyone has their own standards for accommodations, but this place perfectly matched mine. I definitely want to return!

    It was great.

    The hotel offers excellent facilities and a great location. The interior is spacious and thoughtfully designed. Amenities are provided by L'Occitane, ensuring quality, and the staff's service was impeccable. This time, we chose the "Hazuki no Zen" bento box plan for dinner. However, the portion size was very small, so it felt more like a tasting of Obusedo's flavors rather than a full meal. Since it wasn't enough, we went to the adjacent restaurant (Kurabu), which was reasonably priced and delicious. Additionally, receiving a complimentary drink at the nearby affiliated bar (Oniba) was an unexpected but pleasant surprise. For breakfast, we dined at Italian restaurant Sanfurou. The freshly baked bread was delightful. However, being asked to choose only one drink from milk, juice, coffee or tea left us puzzled ("????"). Since I chose milk, I couldn't have coffee afterward—this somewhat diminished my satisfaction with an otherwise lovely breakfast experience. It would be better if guests could select two drinks in total from options like "milk or juice" and "coffee or tea." Overall though, as a base for exploring Obuse town, this accommodation is unbeatable! I would definitely love to stay here again in the future!

    The Hotel design beautifully blends traditional Japanese and modern styles, and the service is excellent. The meals were delicious, and I look forward to visiting again when I have the chance. I truly felt completely relaxed from the bottom of my heart.

    This is my second stay following last year.

    We stayed with our children aged 7 months, 4 years, and 6 years. We were a bit worried about staying with a baby, but the accommodation provided bed guards and a diaper disposal bin, making it easy to stay with kids. The breakfast was wonderful and something we looked forward to. We had dinner nearby.

    I stayed at Masuichi Kyakuden, a place I had always wanted to visit! A dream come true. The room, renovated from a traditional storehouse, has a classic and serene atmosphere with indirect lighting. The bath was spacious and relaxing, and although I was concerned it might take time to fill the tub, my worries were unfounded—it filled with plenty of water in just 5 minutes. As for the meals, everything from the chimney Mont Blanc dessert to the evening kaiseki cuisine, bar cocktails, and morning breakfast was delicious and enjoyable. The bamboo tube chestnut yokan offered as a service during check-in and the Housho Chestnuts provided as an IKYU special were also incredibly tasty. I wish I could have stayed longer than one night to relax more. I'll definitely visit again!

    Room: The renovated warehouse room is slightly dim, providing a calm atmosphere. The queen-sized bed offers plenty of space to relax. The adjacent study room is also spacious enough. Bath: While not an onsen, the bathtub is relatively large. However, the faucet at the sink is quite low, which might make it a bit inconvenient to use. Meals: We recommend reserving at Masuichi Kyakuden for meals. Dinner features tea kaiseki cuisine with exceptional dashi that makes every dish delicious. Although no meat is served, the portions are sufficient. Breakfast includes Western-style dishes; both the eggs benedict and Spanish omelet were delightful. Near the accommodation, there’s a café called Entotsu where you should try their Mont Blanc dessert. The charm of the renovated warehouse, koi fish in the pond, and excellent hospitality from staff made this trip truly satisfying.

    A Relaxing Accommodation

    A very quiet and peaceful accommodation. I was able to relax comfortably. The room design with high ceilings and a step-up bath was a first for me. Breakfast, prepared in a separate building, was very delicious. It is also in an extremely convenient location for sightseeing in Obuse. I would love to visit again during the season when chestnuts are delicious.

    Perfect Accommodation for Strolling Around Obuse Town

    Last year, I stopped by Obuse for just an hour on a sightseeing bus and wanted to explore the town more, so I took a solo trip this time. The accommodation is located in front of the Hokusai Museum, offering the best location. Meals are served at different restaurants for breakfast and dinner, but strolling through the town at night was delightful. The accommodation is a renovated traditional warehouse, making it enjoyable as an architectural piece as well. Both dinner and breakfast feature healthy local vegetables. While dinner was not very impressive in taste, breakfast with egg dishes, bread, and salad was delicious. The front desk and hotel staff were attentive and made my stay comfortable. With a 1 PM checkout time, I had enough time to send souvenirs purchased during my walk around town via courier from the hotel—this was very convenient. It was an accommodation fitting for enjoying the history of Obuse.

    This was my first trip to Obuse. The Italian restaurant you recommended was absolutely delicious, and I was able to purchase the wine introduced there to take home—a great find! (laughs) I would love to return during the new chestnut season to enjoy Mont Blanc again. Thank you for providing such a comfortable and pleasant time.

    The facility guidance provided at check-in was very detailed, making me feel assured and comfortable entrusting my stay. Instead of a one-sided explanation, they subtly inquired about my planned stay and offered helpful information and support. They also responded promptly and courteously to inquiries about amenities. Thank you very much for making it a wonderful trip. The room was extremely quiet and serene. I chose a relaxing type with plenty of natural light from the windows. Although there was only one door to access the terrace without a screen door, two terrace chairs were stored in the closet, allowing us to enjoy the private outdoor space. The interior had high ceilings, creating an open atmosphere, and it was clean (odorless). The bed had a firm yet comfortable mattress that didn’t feel too hard, providing good sleep quality. The bathroom area had plenty of towels along with bathrobes for added comfort. Breakfast was included in our stay; I particularly remember enjoying Obuse milk and delicious scones. *Please note that basic skincare items like face wash or makeup remover need to be brought along as they are not provided. Guest rooms are up to two floors high without an elevator—if stairs may pose difficulty, contacting the accommodation beforehand is recommended for peace of mind. Three bottles of water were provided in the room. (We visited Nagano/Obuse for sightseeing with Zenkoji Temple and this accommodation as our destinations—it’s more recommended than Karuizawa.)

    A modern Hotel with a traditional inn-style atmosphere

    Featured on YouTube videos as a must-stay Hotel. Located right in front of the Hokusai Museum. A blend of traditional Japanese style with a modern interior. The Room is spacious, almost too spacious to feel at ease if you're not used to it. The bath made of tiles and glass has a modern touch, but as I get older, I find myself preferring Onsen at night. Meals may seem small in portion at first glance, but perhaps due to the focus on local ingredients and careful preparation, they were more than satisfying. There are several restaurants within the premises, making it fun to explore around.

    Enjoy Obuse to the Fullest

    During the Golden Week, staying at this accommodation allowed us to fully enjoy a relaxing time in Obuse. After check-in, despite the holiday crowds, we were able to smoothly enjoy delicious Mont Blanc at "Entotsu" thanks to their reservation assistance. We spent quiet moments at the library browsing Hokusai's original works and rare photo collections. For dinner, we savored beautifully crafted seasonal Japanese cuisine at Obusedo Main Restaurant and enjoyed cocktails at Oniba afterward. In the morning, we moved to the restaurant while breathing in refreshing morning air and started our day with Obuse milk, apple juice, rich handmade yogurt, delicious egg dishes, soup, handmade bread and scones—all beautifully presented for a delightful start to our day. After breakfast, we leisurely strolled around Obuse town until check-out time. The surroundings of Obusedo and the townscape were truly charming and made for an unforgettable experience. The warm hospitality of the staff was also very much appreciated. We would love to visit again during another season!

    Thank you very much for your hospitality the other day. My family and I had a wonderful time and truly appreciated the experience. This was our first stay at Masuichi Kyakuden, and it turned out to be a very comfortable visit. Not only was it convenient, but the attentive yet unobtrusive service, along with the relaxing atmosphere that felt like being in a private villa, made it an exceptional accommodation. Before our stay, we were slightly concerned about the lack of an onsen facility; however, as Obuse is known for its high-quality water, we thoroughly enjoyed relaxing baths in the spacious bathtub. There is just one concern I would like to mention—though it's difficult to bring up—I was bitten by mites during my stay. Worried about this issue, I placed bath towels on my bed before sleeping; however, I still found several bites in the morning. If this could be addressed for future stays, it would provide peace of mind. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

    Warehouse

    The sake brewery has been stylishly renovated. However, some rooms only have small windows and poor lighting. The first room we were shown had a closed-in feeling and differed from the photos at the time of reservation, so we requested to change the room. The second room was on the second floor, spacious, and had better lighting. However, since it is a converted brewery, there are lattice windows covered with bars outside. This seems unavoidable for a brewery building. There is also a 24-hour open library, but it was so dim that it felt like it could strain your eyes. It’s recommended to reserve a room with two or more windows if possible. Overall, while chic in design, the interior remains dark due to being inside an old brewery building.

    Sense of style is captivating.

    I have always admired the design of Park Hyatt Tokyo and stayed there regularly before its temporary closure for renovations. I had been interested in Masuichi Kyakuden, a hotel designed by the same designer as Park Hyatt Tokyo, and finally had the opportunity to stay there this time. While I noticed some aging in the guest rooms, the design was exceptional and provided a very relaxing experience. The fact that the breakfast restaurant and bar are slightly separated from the guest room building actually added to the charm, as the surrounding area of the hotel is elegantly designed, making for a highly satisfying stay. The breakfast was also delicious. I hope to visit again someday.
