    It was amazing again.

It seems the massage chair in the Room has been upgraded to the latest model. When I tried it right away, it truly felt like being massaged by human hands. Even though I don’t eat much, the meals were so delicious and perfectly portioned that I was able to finish almost everything. I’ll visit again in autumn.

At long last, I visited Koshinosato, a place I had dreamed of for years.

I had wanted, at least once, to step into “Salon Yamasato,” the private lobby lounge of Koshinosato—I've felt that way for the past 10 years. As we reached our 60th birthdays as a couple, we decided to make a Reservation and treat ourselves at this milestone. We truly loved the cuisine, amenities, and atmosphere. I was deeply impressed by the high-quality meals—it was an Accommodation with impeccable hospitality in every way. Also, the macarons and gelato at Kaho’s salon were absolutely top-class delicious—I couldn’t stop eating them. The flavor stayed with me, and I kept wondering what brand they were. It made me strongly want to come back again. Thank you very much. The concierge staff were also incredibly kind—simply wonderful.

    Niigata’s Pride

I stayed at Bettei Koshinosato for two nights. It was my first stay in seven years. [Baths] Back then, I remember there wasn’t a shared bathhouse in the annex, so I went to the large public bath in the main building. I thought I probably wouldn’t use the annex’s large public bath, but after trying it, I ended up using only this one (laugh). It wasn’t crowded or noisy, and the complimentary drinks were provided in plastic bottles. The amenities—like toothbrushes and hair dryers—were also a step up from those in the main building. It’s nice that they’re clearly differentiated. As for the open-air bath attached to the Room not being an Onsen, I understand there are practical reasons such as water sourcing, so I simply enjoyed it as something special for photos. [Meals] I’m grateful that you accommodated our requests with flexibility. Bringing our own alcohol was also allowed (for a fee), and we felt consideration throughout. [Hospitality & Service] As always, each and every staff member provided wonderful service. The warm and charming proprietress—busy from early morning at breakfast while still taking time to chat with each guest—is surely one of the reasons why Kaho is regarded as one of Japan’s finest Onsen Accommodations.

I see. I’d love to come back again!

7th Floor 771 / Kasumi [Japanese cypress indoor bath with amphibole stone] Japanese-Western Suite Japanese-Western room, 81.8 sqm Enjoy Echigo’s blessings: Seasonal Kaiseki “Shun Course” I stayed here for the first time after seeing it featured in a TV Ryokan ranking. I was a little unsure whether I’d really get excited about a location that feels like it stands in the middle of rice fields—but now I understand. The view from the 7th-floor room was exceptional: as you’d expect from one of Japan’s premier rice-growing regions, the vast scale of the paddies and their mirror-like beauty created scenery you can only experience here. It’s a large Ryokan overall, but Koshinosato (the annex) has a separate front desk. Check-in is handled by a concierge in a chic reception area. We each received our own room key card. The suite includes a Japanese-style living area, twin beds, and an observation sofa room to enjoy the view. There was also an older massage chair. The in-room bath was very comfortable at just the right temperature, though the view outside is blocked by wooden screening so there isn’t much to see. Amenities were excellent; we were impressed that ReFa hair dryers and other items were provided as a full set. Both yukata and samue are available inside the property; we chose to wear samue during our stay. The refrigerator included complimentary mineral water, beer, cola, and oolong tea. Dinner was served in a private dining room and was just the right amount. The nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch) was tender enough that even the bones were soft and flaky. The quality of the beef for shabu-shabu and the delicious clay-pot rice were outstanding. In particular, breakfast buffet alone—especially making seafood bowls with salmon roe, squid, tuna, salmon, and more—was more than satisfying. The bathwater’s pale emerald color felt unusual at first; while Koshinosato’s dedicated baths are quiet with an adult atmosphere, I personally preferred the main building’s large open-air bath for its spaciousness and comfort. My only real complaint was that there was only one power outlet for one side of the twin beds—I hope this can be improved. If I had to be picky, updating the massage chair would make it perfect. The proprietress also personally saw guests off throughout our stay—very impressive service overall. This is a luxury Ryokan that made me want to return again. Thank you very much.

    We were very satisfied.

My mother, my aunt, and I stayed here together. Upon arrival, we passed through a spacious, beautiful lobby and were guided by a staff member to Koshi no Sato. Perhaps because it was Golden Week, there were no seats for the welcome matcha drink at first, but we enjoyed it later and it was delicious. Since I had consulted in advance about my mother’s mobility issues, they had prepared a chair in our Room, which we truly appreciated. Dinner featured elegantly seasoned dishes made with an abundance of local ingredients. The staff’s explanations of each dish were easy to understand, and we could genuinely feel their heartfelt hospitality. The Onsen water at Tsukioka Onsen was also wonderful; after just one night, my mother’s and aunt’s neuralgia seemed to improve slightly. When we left, the staff carried our luggage all the way to the entrance. While many places help with luggage at check-in but leave you to handle it yourself at check-out, here we received warm hospitality right through to the very end—and it deeply moved us. It certainly isn’t cheap, but I believe this Accommodation is well worth the price.

    Nothing to complain about.

I have been a returning guest for nearly 26 years. Thank you very much for taking such great care of me again on this visit. The Onsen, the meals, and the hospitality of all the staff were wonderful, and I was very satisfied once again.

    After seeing the sce...

After seeing the scenic open-air bath on YouTube, I’d wanted to stay here for a long time, but it’s far from my home. This time, I was able to take a longer break and finally stayed here. Although the open-air bath in the Room is not an Onsen, the view is incredible!! (If I had to say one thing, I would have loved to visit after rice planting in May, when the fields are filled with green rice plants.) There was a great range of sizes for samue and yukata. It was very comfortable—there were both yukata and samue for children, and the futon mattress was thick and easy on my back. The Onsen also had a strong sulfur scent and shimmered emerald green!! The meals were excellent too: there was a generous amount of spiny lobster per person (as a lobster lover, that made me very happy), the blackthroat seaperch was rich and delicious… and even the morning curry had an amazing natural sweetness from the ingredients. Everything tasted wonderful!! From here on are the disappointing points. - There were no POLA amenity pouches in the Room. (Many blog posts mentioned having both sheet masks and POLA.) - The drink selection in Koshinosato Lounge is limited. - Kaho Lounge also offers mostly sweets, with only Happy Turn as a snack option (is it different outside of sweets time?). - Neither lounge restocks near closing time. At Kaho Lounge, beer and soft drinks ran out completely. At Koshinosato Lounge, soft drinks were not refilled and ran out; beer remained but glasses were not replenished… plus used glasses of unknown age were left sitting at the return area. For an Accommodation costing 180,000 yen for a family of four (including two young children: an early elementary schooler and a preschooler), this lounge service level was far too disappointing. (There are places at similar or lower prices that handle this much better.) - Regarding the coin for children’s snacks at Kaho Lounge: when I asked a female staff member in the lounge if we could get coins, she clearly looked annoyed and said “Please ask at reception.” Why do we need to go all the way to reception just to get them? At other Accommodations where we’ve stayed, those gacha-style snack machine coins are usually placed right next to the machine with “Please help yourself.” My child was surprised too—“Huh? Only once?” The Facility and food were outstanding, but because my expectations for other services were high as well, it ended up being a slightly disappointing stay overall…

This is a truly classic and beloved Japanese Accommodation!

Throughout our stay, we could feel the Accommodation’s pride and dignity in every detail, and it was a truly fulfilling experience. First, what deserves special mention is the thoroughness of the Room cleaning. Everything was carefully arranged down to the smallest detail, and the spotless space—without a speck of dust—made us feel that the fundamentals of an Accommodation were being upheld at an exceptionally high standard. We were also deeply impressed by the grace of the attendant’s service. Though she was young, she wore traditional attire, moved quietly with no wasted motion, and spoke with gentle refinement. In each gesture we sensed a polished spirit of hospitality; imagining how much effort she must have put in even brought tears to my eyes. (This old man is easily moved.) And above all, what was most outstanding was the exceptional quality of the cuisine. With generous use of premium ingredients, every aspect—the presentation, depth of flavor, and expression of seasonality—was superb. More than anything, I felt that what sustains this high level of service—and its true cornerstone—is the proprietress’s attitude. She consistently leads from the front, encouraging and guiding her staff. I was profoundly moved. These days, Accommodations like this are becoming rare. My wife and I are already talking about returning again in autumn. This is a genuinely outstanding Accommodation where you can experience Japan’s traditional beauty and refined elegance without exaggeration.

We were able to relax in a spacious, clean Room with well-stocked amenities, and the in-room massage chair was a great touch. The breakfast and dinner were also very delicious. Everyone who assisted us—the concierge, the staff who prepared our meals, and those who saw us off—was polite and provided wonderful service. We visited hoping to see snowy scenery, but it was unusually warm for the season and there was no snow... Still, it was such a lovely Accommodation that we forgot all about that. This is not directly related to the Accommodation itself, but I hope transportation options around Tsukioka Onsen can be reconsidered. On the way there, we took the direct bus from Niigata Station, but since seating is first-come, first-served, many people were unable to board and were left stranded. On the way back, if you take your time until checkout, you can’t make it in time for the bus; we had a taxi arranged instead. If the direct bus schedule and number of services were more convenient, it would be easier to visit even during the snowy season. It’s an Accommodation we would love to visit again. Thank you very much.

Relax and unwind at your own pace amid a snowy landscape.

The spacious, spotless Room was quiet and relaxing. The open-air bath in the Room was amazing, and I enjoyed it many times while taking in the pure white snowy scenery. Both breakfast and dinner were served in a private dining room, and we were very satisfied with the luxurious cuisine. Everything was delicious, including a wide variety of fresh sashimi, grilled nodoguro with seaweed salt, Shibata beef shabu-shabu, and crab rice. The concierge team’s warm hospitality with genuine smiles was wonderful, and I also appreciated being seen off by the proprietress. The Shuttle Service on snowy roads was a great help as well. Thank you very much.

    The dinner service was excellent.

The guide seemed young and inexperienced. I requested a spa treatment, but it was unclear if it was available until the spa staff arrived. Once they did, they responded promptly, and the treatment was excellent and very satisfying. Dinner met my expectations, and the service staff provided pleasant assistance, which made me very satisfied. However, during breakfast, the elderly staff member seemed rushed, which was disappointing. For some reason, breakfast at ryokans in Tsukioka Onsen is not very tasty. This seems to be common among other accommodations as well; despite being in a rice-producing region where rice should taste good when cooked normally, breakfast rice tends to be soggy. It’s different from the dinner rice—rice balls sold at Niigata Station are much tastier by comparison. Could it be due to the water used? It's a mystery. While separating group guests from others may be challenging, having more of an exclusive villa-like atmosphere would enhance the experience further. The facility itself is fairly luxurious; however, compared to 30 years ago, I feel that customer service skills among staff have declined. The onsen town also feels quite desolate now—I hope for its revival in the future.

    It was excellent.

The service was excellent. I was able to relax very much. However, I wish I had known in advance about the free drinks at the lobby lounge and in the Room's refrigerator, as it would have helped me adjust my appetite during the trip—a delightful regret. The head hostess came out to see us off, which made for a very pleasant stay and departure.

    Good.

The hot water was excellent, and the Facility was clean and satisfying. The matsutake mushroom dobin mushi lacked the flavor of matsutake, and there seemed to be few warm dishes. For breakfast, the lineup was surprising with curry, salmon, mochi pork, and more.

It is a wonderful accommodation. Thank you very much.

This is the most wonderful accommodation I have ever stayed at. The room was impeccably clean, and every amenity in the room and bathroom was excellent, reflecting a sense of pride in their service. I was especially grateful to be able to enjoy dinner unexpectedly in the room, which allowed me to relax fully. Breakfast offered a wide variety of options that were almost overwhelming, and the freshly squeezed grapefruit juice was a first-time experience for me. The view from the room was like a painting—something we could never experience living in the city. One small issue... The location of the parking lot was hard to find. You need to go through a gate (?) and up a slope, but it wasn’t clear where exactly it was located. We got quite lost trying to figure it out beforehand. There’s also another parking area below the gate, which made us wonder if we should park there instead since there didn’t seem to be any signage indicating otherwise. I would love to visit this accommodation again! Thank you very much!

I requested a Room with a specific view and was very satisfied as it met my expectations. Although the weather wasn't great, I thoroughly enjoyed the private open-air bath in the Room. The open-air bath on the first floor was also stunning with its vibrant emerald green color. It was quiet and pleasant since it wasn’t crowded. The hospitality was exceptional and attentive. However, the souvenir we received upon departure was too much for just two people to handle.

It was a highly satisfying stay.

This was my first stay at the accommodation. Upon entering the entrance of Kaho, I was captivated by the serene atmosphere and the stunning flower arrangements. The pathway to the front desk of Kosonosato was adorned with paintings, ceramics, and flower arrangements on both sides, adding a sense of grandeur. The room had an open layout without partitions, creating a spacious feel, and the view from the observation lounge was particularly spectacular. For meals, I chose the "Top 100 Overall No.1 Commemorative Plan" menu. Dinner had a light flavor that suited my taste and felt appropriate for its price range. For breakfast, I opted for a buffet but thought about trying their premium course next time. The staff's hospitality was excellent, and seeing even the proprietress actively working in the breakfast venue gave me insight into this ryokan's essence. Overall, this stay lived up to expectations as befitting a top-ranked accommodation in Pro 100 Selection No.1 ranking. I look forward to visiting again on another occasion!

    I had a relaxing stay.

We chose this accommodation, Koshinosato, to celebrate a birthday and enjoy a relaxing stay in the room. The amenities and services were excellent, making for a very comfortable stay. We opted for in-room dining, which allowed us to relax even more and was highly satisfying. The light from the switch-operated lantern in the room was slightly too bright; adjustable lighting would better match the ambiance.

    Lack of attentiveness

I have stayed here several times a year. Allow me to share my comments with hopes for future improvements. Are you considering what guests expect when choosing this accommodation? Disappointing points during this stay: - Dust on the lid of the amenity container. - Toilet disinfectant not replenished. These may seem minor, but they reflect a lack of attention to detail. Generic letters are unnecessary. Please take a moment to think about what you would want if you were in our position.

I have stayed at various accommodations, from budget to luxury, as I love traveling. While higher prices often mean better facilities, some accommodations surprisingly lack proper staff training, leading to concerns about service quality. However, this accommodation clearly prioritizes staff training. The hospitality was exceptional, and my stay was consistently comfortable and pleasant. I was particularly looking forward to the view from the room during this visit, and it exceeded my expectations with breathtaking scenery that I could admire endlessly. Additionally, the meals were not only delicious but also beautifully presented with a delightful atmosphere—truly satisfying in every way. Both my partner and I were extremely satisfied and would love to stay here again!

    The best accommodation.

We stayed at this accommodation with our family during Obon. Three years ago, we stayed at a famous accommodation, but the bath, meals, room cleanliness, and staff hospitality here at Kahoetsu no Sato felt superior. When checking out, we saw the cleaning process of the neighboring room and were amazed by how meticulously four people worked together. We would love to stay at this accommodation again.

I had high expectations based on prior information, and it lived up to its reputation. When I asked about the location of a restaurant I wanted to visit, they kindly drove me there, which was greatly appreciated. Along the way, they provided helpful tips and information that were very useful. If I have the chance, I would love to stay here again.

Hospitality is excellent, but the Room is old and less appealing.

Moved to the 10th-floor special room at Kaho for the second night. This accommodation is said to be of a higher rank, recommended for the latter stay, but opinions may vary. The meals are delicious. It seemed that the staff was unaware we came from the 10th-floor special room. This room has not been renovated and retains an old-fashioned style, which was disappointing. Apart from this room, the facilities are luxurious and fully equipped, yet I felt a lingering sense of loneliness throughout my stay.

    It was the best stay.

Enjoy a relaxing bath with a view of the rice fields! Coincidentally, this was the same place my mother stayed 17 years ago with her late friend. The cuisine, hot springs, and hospitality were exceptional. From traditional Japanese sweets and matcha to drinks and amenities—everything was thoughtfully prepared. I was even impressed by the availability of nail polish! The staff's attentiveness and care were well-trained yet warm and homely. At check-out, my mother had a heartfelt conversation with the hostess about memories of her late friend, which brought her great joy. Thank you very much!

    Outstanding at this scale

My wife loves this place, and this is our second visit. The service, hospitality, and attention to detail are outstanding. The room and facility are impeccable. The Onsen is especially exceptional. Overall, for a hotel of this scale, it ranks among the top in Japan. While the cuisine may not rival that of top-tier small luxury hotels, it is still excellent. This hotel is definitely worth visiting. Thank you very much!

    Thank you.

Thank you very much for your hospitality. This was my second stay. Last time, I chose the breakfast buffet, which offered a great variety of dishes, but it was a bit challenging as it was crowded and I was with an elderly companion. Taking that into consideration, this time I decided not to choose the buffet in advance. Both meals were served in a private room, allowing us to enjoy our meals calmly and at ease. It would be helpful if information about peak hours for the buffet could be provided beforehand. I also selected the room based on my previous experience and was very satisfied with my choice this time. The weather was beautiful, and the view of almost fully planted rice fields was breathtaking. Thank you very much for your excellent service!

    The Best Accommodation

Sixteen years ago, I visited Kaho and Etsunosato three times for work-related reasons. This time, I stayed at this memorable accommodation with my family to celebrate my 60th birthday. The unchanging hospitality, onsen, and meals brought back nostalgia and made for a truly satisfying two days. Please continue to be a wonderful accommodation forever. Hopefully, next time I can visit with my children's families for my 77th birthday!
