Everything is well balanced in every aspect.

Although it was a cold, rainy stay at the end of August, we really enjoyed it. The course meals were absolutely delicious! Everything was great, but we were disappointed to be rushed during the course dinner with “The next group is coming, so please finish early.” Without that, I would give it a perfect score.

    A small, old Hotel

I booked a Plan with breakfast and dinner buffet included. The dining area was small, and I was assigned a seat at check-in, which resulted in a late dinner time. The lobby and Onsen area had been renovated and felt relatively new, but the elevator and Room were old. There were no power outlets near the bed in my Room, which was inconvenient, and the Room had a musty smell, so I wasn’t satisfied for the price. The Room did not have air conditioning, but it did have a fan and air conditioning.

Although the renovation meant the bedside outlets and chargers were well provided, and all the staff offered excellent service, I was satisfied in that respect; however, there were several things that concerned me. First, the elevator on the way to the Room was very small—when we brought a cart in, other families could not fit and had to wait for the next one. Also, I usually expect mineral water or some snacks in the Room, but there was nothing provided. (I wondered if that might be because they instead offer complimentary drinks after bathing...) The Room also had peeling wallpaper in various places; it had been patched up, but it did not look very clean. I was also looking forward to the course meal, but perhaps my expectations were too high—the only items I found truly tasty were the fresh sashimi and the meat. I understand that during the busy Obon season this price may be unavoidable, but I wanted to share these points in hopes of improvement.

    Megami Lake Stroll

We escaped the intense summer heat of the city and truly enjoyed a lakeside walk surrounded by nature. Although it was crowded during the peak summer season, we were able to recharge in the clear, fresh air. Due to unsettled weather we couldn’t see a full starry sky, but at the stargazing event we appreciated the knowledgeable certified guide’s explanations, which helped us experience the grandeur of Tateshina. If possible, we would be grateful if you could vary the breakfast menu for a Multiple Night Stay. Thank you very much.

The room was spacious, and we were able to relax. It was cool and comfortable even without air conditioning. The meals were delicious, especially the rice. This is a Hotel I would like to visit again.

I stayed for one night on July 28, 2026. The staff’s hospitality and professionalism were wonderful. The meals were delicious, and the portions were just right. Since the property is at a high elevation, opening the window let in a pleasantly cool breeze.

A fan is provided instead of air conditioning.

I visited on a hot day in July. In the past, it might have been fine without air conditioning, but these days it’s tough. During the day, it was so hot that I couldn’t stay in the Room—it felt like a heatstroke risk. At night, it was uncomfortably warm and hard to sleep. I went to relax, but ended up very tired. Everything else was reasonably good, so it was disappointing.

    A bit disappointing.

I expected to stay in the newly renovated Standard Japanese-Western Room (renovated in January 2026) with my daughter and her husband, our two grandchildren, my mother-in-law, and my wife (7 people total). However, when we arrived, the front desk told us that due to the Hotel’s circumstances our Room had been changed, but that it was “a slightly larger Room.” We booked for the newness, not the size, and there was no proper explanation. The Room also felt quite worn out, which was disappointing. The meals were buffet-style, and everything we tried was delicious—we were very satisfied. The large public bath was also clean and satisfying. If I had to add one thing, it would have been perfect if there had been a free-flowing hot spring bath. Overall it was a satisfying stay at this Accommodation, but I could not accept that our Room was changed. We are grateful to the dining staff for their pleasant service. Because of heavy highway traffic we didn’t arrive until around 5:00 PM, so we couldn’t explore the area around the Hotel. It was also cloudy so we couldn’t see the starry sky. Next time, I’d like to stay in a newly renovated Room and enjoy our visit more.

    The meals are delicious.

The meals made with fresh local ingredients were delicious—I was very satisfied. The younger staff were also very kind and helpful. However, there is an older male employee; he works hard, but I felt a bit sorry for him. As for the guest room, the renovation felt somewhat makeshift and not much different from before. Also, I stayed for a Multiple Night Stay (2 nights), but I was surprised there was no room cleaning. When I returned from going out on the second day, a bath towel and toilet paper had been left in a plastic bag in front of my door. I felt this should have been explained in advance.

I was surprised by how old the exterior looked, but the inside had been renovated and was very clean and beautiful. We stayed in a Deluxe Family Room for two families, and it was even nicer than expected—above all, it offered excellent value for money. The thorough cleaning also made our stay very comfortable. I forgot to mention this at reception, but there were a few bees on the balcony. For guests with children, I think it would be helpful to provide a warning in advance so they don’t accidentally open the windows. The meals were delicious, and we also loved the service that let us take our after-dinner coffee outside and relax while looking out over the lake. There was also a kids’ corner, and the post-bath juice service seemed to be a big hit with the children. We skipped stargazing due to cloudy skies, but I thought it would be nice if there were a handheld fireworks service in summer as well. We would love to stay again if we have another opportunity.

    Enjoyable Holiday

We stopped by on our way back from Madarao Kogen with my husband. We were satisfied with the meals and the bath, and we would like to say the Room as well, but there was no air conditioning, so it was hot and humid, which was disappointing. Please consider installing air conditioning.

    The Room was hot.

I was not informed until check-in that there is no air conditioner in the Room. Also, the front desk seemed reluctant to highlight the lack of air conditioning and explained as if it were normal that once the sun sets, the outside air becomes cooler and so does the Room. However, when I entered the Room, I was shocked. I turned on the fan provided, and there was also a machine like a dryer, but I didn’t know what it was. When I asked the front desk, they said it was an evaporative cooler, so I filled it with water and ran it. Unfortunately, perhaps because of the high indoor temperature, it wasn’t powerful enough to cool the Room. Even so, I wish they had explained how to use it at check-in. I was also told that insects would come in and that when opening the window (by opening the screen), I should turn off all lights. But there were an unbelievable number of insects—when I opened it even briefly, a large swarm rushed into the Room. As a first-time guest who didn’t know this would happen, it made for a very difficult night.

    Not suitable for summer stays.

I stayed in Tateshina, Lake Megami, and Tobira Onsen during mid-July when a heatstroke alert was in effect. The only Hotel without air-conditioning was Tateshina Lake Resort. It was so hot that I couldn’t sleep at night out of fear of collapsing from heatstroke, and I spent the night awake; I was only able to get a little sleep toward morning when the temperature dropped slightly. Tateshina used to be cool, but now it feels almost no different from the city. I cannot recommend staying here in summer. On the other hand, the quality and variety of the meals were excellent and very satisfying.

    First stay after the renovation

This was my first stay since the renovation and rebranding after several years. The Accommodation has been nicely refreshed and looks very clean throughout.\n\nThe guest rooms still do not have air conditioning, so during the daytime you need to rely on a fan and an air cooler. After sunset, opening the window brought in a cool breeze.\n\nThe large public bath has also been renovated, and an outdoor sauna has been added. It also seems the indoor bath is now an Onsen as well, which helped reduce crowding. Cold drinks were offered in front of the public bath area, which was appreciated.\n\nDinner had more options than before (such as roast beef), but overall nothing felt particularly distinctive. That said, the fresh raw vegetables, Shinshu salmon, and cheese-wheel pasta were delicious—I went back for refills. The all-you-can-drink option for 1,100 yen feels like a good deal. However, there were no cocktails like before.\n\nBreakfast was disappointing—more like a Business Hotel than a Resort Hotel selection. At minimum, it would have been nice to have local vegetables for the salad bar. The milk and yogurt were excellent; honey would have made it perfect.\n\nThe buffet dining area is not very large, so if you are dining as a pair you may be seated at a small table. Staff cleared used dishes frequently, but they sometimes took everything away even when chopsticks had to be placed directly on the table first—perhaps a bit too eager.\n\nMany Diamond member benefits were offered; I received sparkling wine at dinner and sweets at check-in. Due to occupancy conditions, I did not receive a room upgrade or late check-out—members who are counting on these should note this.\n\nWhile it was 36°C back home that day, it was 23°C here and I slept very well. I would like to return again in summer.

    We had a relaxing stay.

We stayed here on a weekend in July. We were a bit worried about the lack of air conditioning, but the Room had a fan, and when we opened the windows, a very cool breeze came in and it was comfortable. The Room has been renovated and is clean. It’s nice that there are two types of pillows, but both were quite high and made my neck hurt. I would appreciate it if one lower pillow could be provided. The meals were delicious, and the Onsen and sauna were excellent. If we have a chance to visit Tateshina again, we would like to stay here again.

Air conditioning is essential in summer.

Even though the altitude is high, I still felt I would want air conditioning even in early July, so I don’t plan to stay here in midsummer. The meals were different from when it was Ambient, but they were still very enjoyable. The daylilies (Nikko kisuge) at Kurumayama were only about 20–30% in bloom; I guess around July 11–12 is the best time to see them, though it will probably be very crowded. I’d like to plan a trip in autumn to see the fall foliage, but since I’m not a member the room rates are probably too high for me, so I may have to give up. I’d also like to visit once during winter when everything is covered in snow.

    Hmm?

First, the drinks during meals are too expensive!! They should be reduced by at least 20%, or the portions should be increased! Since guests come all the way to your Hotel, you need to offer something that makes them feel there is enjoyment and value—otherwise individual travelers will stop coming. I was looking forward to dinner as well, but the portions felt small. The couple sitting next to us was also quietly saying similar things. I’m saying this for your future improvement. The staff were pleasant.

    Worse than before the renovation.

I used to look forward to the meals because they were delicious, but since the renovation the food has been terrible. The main dish was grilled pork sashimi with bread—unacceptable. In the Room, the only place to sit was an extra bed, so I couldn’t relax and take a break while watching TV. Overall, everything has gotten worse.

The meals were good. However, considering the Hotel’s guest capacity, the large public bath does not have enough lockers, washing stations, or bath space. As a result, bathing with children is extremely difficult.

We had an amazing, great-value mini getaway!

We stayed for one night with two meals included during the Golden Week holidays. As it was after the renovation, everything felt very clean and pleasant, including the Room, lobby, and restaurant. The food was just the right amount and tasted great, with plenty of seasonal ingredients—we were very satisfied. The baths, including the open-air bath, felt a little small, but the temperature was perfect and very relaxing. The view of Lake Megami from our Room was wonderful, and next time we’d love to come in midsummer to enjoy the cool weather and stargazing. We’re looking forward to it.

I’m glad you liked it after the renovation.

I made a Reservation for a highland sightseeing trip, expecting the Hotel to be clean after the renovation. The lobby, baths, and buffet restaurant had been nicely updated, but some parts of the guest room—such as the toilet and sink—still felt old, which was disappointing. The buffet isn’t luxurious, but it’s fair for the price. The best part was the stargazing event—we both really enjoyed it as a parent and child. It’s also conveniently located near sightseeing spots such as the Venus Line drive, a walk around Lake Megami, and Nagato Farm.

    The food is delicious.

The staff were very attentive and helpful. For this price, both dinner and breakfast are served, and the food is delicious—excellent value for money. The Room and bathroom have been renovated and were very clean. However, please be careful as wet areas of the bathroom floor can be slippery. Overall, we were extremely satisfied.

    Lake Megami in Spring

On a whim, I made a Reservation here because there was availability, it looked like it had a nice atmosphere, and the price was reasonable. I felt a bit unsure about what it would be like until we arrived, but it turned into a wonderful stay. The Hotel exterior felt slightly dated at first, but once I stepped into the lobby, it truly had the charm of a highland resort and instantly lifted my mood. The woman at the front desk was also very pleasant. Our Room was in the annex building, which is far and feels like a maze. For older guests, the main building may be a better choice. The Room we stayed in wasn’t new, but it was clean, spacious, and easy to use. We could also see Lake Megami through the trees from our Room. We chose the buffet for meals. There were many options and we left very full, but I think it would be even better with more Nagano-style items—things like apples or oyaki. Since tempura was served at the live kitchen station, I also thought maitake mushroom tempura would be great. For breakfast, natto would be nice too. That said, all of the buffet restaurant staff—including an older gentleman—were quick and efficient with great attitudes; I was genuinely impressed. They cleared empty plates promptly and their service was polite and excellent. The Onsen was amazing—the open-air bath overlooking Lake Megami felt incredible! It never got overly crowded (perhaps because dining times were staggered), so we could soak in peace as well. In the morning we walked around Lake Megami once—this is absolutely recommended too. It’s about 30 minutes and offers beautiful views of Mt. Tateshina; such a refreshing walk. The nighttime stargazing event was so fun that we forgot about the cold. The explanations were very easy to understand, and I think people of all ages can enjoy it. Tateshina and Lake Megami are wonderful places on their own, so you can have a great time without needing to go far or do too much. We’d love to come again.

    Japanese cuisine...

I used to be a regular because the Japanese cuisine at this Hotel was excellent. This time, however, the meal felt more like a Japanese-Western fusion, which was a bit disappointing. Still, it was quite tasty overall and I was satisfied.

The sauna is not hot enough.

After the rebrand, both the bath and the Room were very clean. What was very disappointing was that although a sauna had been newly added and the Facility itself wasn’t bad, the temperature was quite lukewarm. It felt about as warm as a room set to a higher indoor temperature. Perhaps this was because school trip students were scheduled to stay. If so, it should be stated clearly; otherwise, I think you should check the temperature settings and airflow. It was disappointing because the Facility is good overall. Also, there is room for improvement, such as finding hair on the floor in the Room and sheets that were very wrinkled. There were no body towels provided for going to the bathroom, so we ended up using the same towel as for washing at the sink. This also needs improvement. It seems a lot of money was invested in the rebrand, and everything was clean and comfortable. Since you’ve come this far, I think even simple additional improvements—such as creating a lounge area—would make it an even more attractive Accommodation.

    I had a comfortable stay.

This is my third stay at this accommodation. This time, I had kaiseki cuisine for dinner for the first time, and it was delicious. Thank you also for your kind hospitality towards my young grandchildren. The only downside was that the room was too far due to the vastness of the property. Whenever I stay in Tateshina, I always choose this accommodation.

A very quiet Hotel by Lake Megami with a view of the starry sky.

Established in 1993, this hotel offers a serene and tranquil atmosphere. While the exterior reflects its age, the entrance features a fountain, and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. Due to its location at an altitude of approximately 1,500 meters, the rooms do not have air conditioning but are equipped with fans. Even during summer evenings, opening the windows allows cool breezes to flow in for a pleasant stay. The hotel has several detached buildings connected by underground passages, making it convenient to move around indoors. The Onsen includes beautiful open-air baths that provide a relaxing experience. For dining, we chose a Japanese restaurant offering dishes made with local ingredients—delicious and satisfying. Recommended activities include strolling around Lake Megami and stargazing at night. The breathtaking starry sky late at night is truly unforgettable. In the morning, we enjoyed a buffet breakfast at the newly renovated restaurant before taking a walk along the lakeside. The peaceful atmosphere and refreshing air were perfect for birdwatching with a camera in hand. After checking out, we visited nearby spots like "Nagato Farm" and "Milk Specialty Shop Moumou," where we savored soft-serve ice cream made from fresh highland milk while watching cows relaxing under tree shades. This trip was an incredible opportunity to fully enjoy Shinshu's magnificent natural beauty!
